My Dad

My dad and I, July, 1984

It seems I have shared a lot with all of you about my family, as my life is my family. So when I blog, it is only natural for me to write about them. It may be a old saying but I truly believe it, they "complete me". I guess it all starts out with my parents with the upbringing I received I was always surrounded by family.

When I look back at many, many years ago, I remember spending time with my grandfather (my dads father) and remember him being so cold. Now it could have been a language barrier as his English was not so good, he came thru Ellis Island only speaking Italian, so his English was self taught. What he spoke is what we call "broken English" which is really, English broken into somewhat Italian. So it is odd to me that my dad was the complete opposite.

See, my dad is warm and caring, and very much bigger than life. He was born in Newark, NJ in 1924. He lived a very simple life, but as he says he was always fulfilled. He lived in a flat with his family which I believe had about 4 rooms total, they were as many family's were, very squeezed in. But it seems they did not mind. He had to work at a very young age so school was not a priority, he only completed to the 5th grade, and began working odd jobs to bring home money. His spelling and reading are not up to par, because of his lack of schooling. He was drafted into World War 2, and spent 4 years in the army as a mechanic, working on the jet fighters. He can surly tell some stories, and we all listen intently with awe. My dad's first real job was as a tailor in a large factory, but that did not last long as my grandfather had opened a restaurant and needed my dad's help. So he became a chef @ Mamma Lucia's Italian Restaurant and later became the owner. We all worked there, yes including me, the restaurant provided a good life for us all and we lived very comfortable because of my dad's long hours and hard work. He did all this without the greatest of reading and writing skills, but he was determined. Every summer he would rent a house at the Jersey Shore for the entire month of August I would stay in the house with extended family, as my parents would have to go up North to work at the restaurant, they would make the drive several times during the month, however never staying longer than a week. And who could forgot the trips to Disneyworld, there were many, he would take all of us, including cousins. The memories I have of all of these great times, is because of him.

When the time came for my dream to become a reality, it was my dad that gave me my dream, his generosity allowed me to be a business owner, he believed in my dream, and gave to me freely. The gratitude for his kindness is overwhelming.

My dad and Vincent, May, 2009

His aging has definitely gotten the best of him and he surly is not the same. I find myself doing most things for him, sometimes with annoyance (as he can be very stubborn) but yet sometimes with gratitude. I now see that he looks for me to come home, or calls me at work in the middle of the day to tell me something, this something can be very minor, which can totally wait till I get home, but he feels the need to tell me asap. I listen as best I can, and try to remember the difference in him as the years past. I believe I was destined to take care of him, I believe it was in the cards. When my brother was born, my mother had decided she did not want anymore children as childbirth was to hard (my brother was 10lbs at birth). She shared this with my grandmother (her mother) and my grandmothers reply was "Sarah, you can't just have one child, you must have at least two, as if one is not my your side the other one will be" so yes, it was in the cards, my grandmother knew, she planned out my destiny without truly knowing how life would be for us.

There comes a time in life, where role reversal begins. This is the time it has begun. And as my dad took care of me, I shall do the same. I just hope I can do as good as a job as he did.

Happy Fathers Day Dad, I love you!

  8. Good Morning Everyone!!!!

    Shirley, Congrat's on 1st!!

    I've missed you Owl's!!!!

    Carol, Love your stories about your family♥♥♥ Your video's are an extra bonus...Thank's for sharing your family with us!!!

    Shirley, I hope those noisey relative's of mine let you sleep in a little bit today! I've been trying to get them to shut their trap's for year's!! LOL

    Tink, hope you're feeling better today. My grandmother had arthritis in her hand's and knee's, so I can relate to it a bit.

    Goldie, Sorry to read you've been sick...but I did laugh about your conversation with your Dr.. ;o)

    Mary, I can so relate to your basement problem's and Mr. Mary not taking care of the problem...I'm still waiting for Mr. B to take care of alot of crap around here. Our water come's in from a small window. It seem's he can go fishing for 14 hr's but can't put the same time in for house repair's. Today he is off golfing, even tho he was "acting" like his back was hurting last night!!! Meanwhile, I've been housebound for for over a year!! Seem's nobody has time to fix my daughter's car, so I can have mine back!!!!
    (that Rant felt good!!)
    ~~~~~~
    Lynn and Barb, Nice to hear you two got to meet up..;o)
    Barb, so glad your son is home♥
    iteach, sound's like you are having some good adventure's on your vaca!!
    I'm still busy keeping Boz on a short leash. I've had to call the vet twice because he was getting sick in the middle of the night. I had to get him meds for nausea and now have to make him rice and hamburger for awhile. So far he's doing better. He's listening better too. Whenever he want's to run I tell him to walk and he actually does it! But, for the most part, he's on his leash. Hopefully by the end of July all of this will be done.
    sorry for the long post.....have alot to catch up on....
    Hope you all have a wonderful day!!!
  9. Popping in again.
    Mo and Jodi there are some details in area 51.
    I can't remember who asked but yes I think Sacbarb liked Thai food. Tho both of us weren't to sure about the Thai iced tea. It makes sweet tea look like a light weight! Can you say sugar shock!
    Hi ya Birdee! Happy to see you this morning. I will not go into the list of repairs here for Mr. Lynn D or my blood pressure will shoot through the roof!
    MEK Thank for letting us know you started the day with SEX. Hmmmm bragging much???
  12. Thanks to all for the great comments on my dad.. I actually had forgotten about a Fathers Day blog.. and then TinaHO, asked if I had one.. and I said nooo.. so she suggested I write one about my Dad.. and could not refuse her, as she would not refuse me. I don't know why, but I thought it was going to be hard so I put if off till 11ish last nite.. and as I looked at the blank screen the words flowed. There really is so much more in his 84yrs, but geez how much can you write.. so I certainly condensed it...
    If Tina did not suggest it, I prob would have not written it.. So a big Thank You to Tina, for allowing me to find the words, and being able to share with all of you..
    ♥♥
  15. The above link is a funny young man I suscribe to on youtube.. I have been watching his vids for a while, he totally cracks me up.. he did a vid in honor of fathers day, and I thought is was so cute.. He has three adorable children who are often in his vids.. His humor at times can be over the top, and the things he pulls can be always over the top.. But its good clean fun, especially when he is filming with his children..
    He had decided to make a vid a day for a year, so daily, I watch..
    Hope you all find the humor in it as well.
    :O)
  16. Good Morning Lynn, Maureen, Mek (congrats on 10), Jodi, Birdee, Lynn, Bebbi and Carol.
    Carol - What a beautiful tribute to your dad. Will you read it to him?
    I am rushing this morning and will have to read the comments tonight. We are going to my Brother-In-laws car show at Beacon Hill Park. It's an English car show and my BIL has a 1946 Rover all re-done. He will probably win first again. It makes him so proud. It starts in an hour. All my nieces and nephews will be there. We will be back in time for my nap at noon and then our children and grand children will be here for the day and for a BBQ. It should be a fun day.
    I wish my dad were here but at least he has his wife and oldest daughter with him in Heaven this year.
    I will be back later tonight I hope. Have a great day. Love, Tinka
  17. Tinka..
    Your day sounds wonderful.. Enjoy it..
    I would read the blog to my dad, however I don't think he would understand why it was written, it just might confuse him, he does not get all this internet stuff.. Actually he calls it "intercom" go figure.. :O)
  18. Good morning!
    Congrats on 1st today Shirley!
    What a beautiful blog, Carol. Definitely a tear jerker.
    We will celebrate belatedly with my dad, as he is coming home from Reno today.
    My dad is awesome! He was in the Air Force, so we moved a lot. I was born in NY and ended up here in CA when I was 8.
    He went on to become an airline pilot and we got to travel a lot when I was growing up.
    He flew international so sometimes would be gone 2 weeks at a time.
    I am grateful to him for the opportunities he gave my brothers and I.
    He and my mom bought me a horse for my 13th birthday, however I was responsible for helping pay for his upkeep. I had to do chores around the house to earn money to help pay for boarding and his shoes.
    He helped me buy my first car, we each put in half, I had to pay him back. Of course there was no interest and no time frame to pay, but I had to pay!
    At the time I didn't like the paying back part, but to this day I credit that for making me how I deal with finances as an adult.
    I love you, dad!
    Carol, thank you for sharing your lovely dad with us today!
  20. What a beautiful blog, Carol! Also, thank you for the link to that guy. He's my kind of people!
    I commandeered my dad's laptop last night and tuned it up. Charged his MP3 player, then left Pepsi and Hershey bars on his counter. He doesn't like big shows, so I've not called him, nor will I pop by. Being left alone is a gift he appreciates.
    EBJ, you live in CA? I had it in my head that you were from out Jersey way. It sounds like Nancy is already training you and the huz.
    Happy day to all the owl Dads and the women behind them!!
  21. Good morning/afternoon, HOoters!
    Carol What a great blog you wrote! I just love hearing about your amazing family. They're just the way I always imagined big Italian families to be. Your dad was such a hard worker who put providing for his family as his top priority. Kudos to him for a job well done.
    I loved that Father's Day video! I was laughing so hard! I have sent it to my son as he is a Daddy who loves to play with his kids, too.
    My dad has been gone for over 20 years. He was a quiet, reserved kind of dad who also worked hard to provide for his family. He was still in his teens when he joined the navy during WWII. My dad taught me how to ride a bike and also bought me my first car. If I had trouble with math homework, he was the one that helped me with it. My dad was at work a lot so he wasn't as present in my life as my mom, but I will always love my dad.
    Happy Father's Day!
  28. Happy Fathers Day....my Father has been gone almost 40 years....and not a day goes by that I don't think of Papa and that boy.
    You see.....
    (someone please hand me my tambourine)
    I was born in the wagon of a travellin show
    My mama used to dance for the money they'd throw
    Papa would do whatever he could
    Preach a little gospel, sell a couple bottles of doctor good
    Gypsys, tramps, and thieves
    We'd hear it from the people of the town
    They'd call us
    gypsys, tramps, and thieves
    But every night all the men would come around
    And lay their money down...
    Picked up a boy just south of Mobile
    Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal
    I was sixteen, he was twenty-one
    Rode with us to memphis
    And papa woulda shot him if he knew what he'd done....
    Gypsys, tramps, and thieves.....ahh....good times...
  40. Hey hooters!
    Such nice tributes to dads today. I join in the group hug!
    Well, I watched 3 episodes of Housewives of NJ today. Such drama! I loved it!
    I have a couple wives that I really like and one I really don't.
    The restaurant scene that Tina posted was unbelievable. I was shocked that they all screamed with some of the kids sitting there.
    And on the recap show, I did not see Danielle carrying a book in. I guess that it was pre-planned in some way with the show for her to bring it out at the table. They must have had it there waiting!
    I didn't really want to get hooked on another reality show, haha!
    Hope everyone had a nice day today!
    sooooo... Peta released a statement saying..
    Yadda, Yadda, Yadda, Yadda..
  76. Yes, she drove to Indiana today to see her sister and her brother. She made it there fine but she took a 2.5 hour trip and made it in only 4.5 hours..LOL! All by herself, I was nervous, but she did fine.
    She doesn't drink, except for an occasional glass of wine. We went to French Lick for her birthday. I won some cash! So we went to Joe Huber's Restaurant in Starlight Indiana for dinner. I went in the casino with $55 and walked out with $230! Yippee!
    Okay, so I did real exciting things, I bought dinner, fruits&veggies, water, slimfast,subway, headphones and an oil change. Poof, all gone.
  84. Hi everyone! I spent the day at my Grandson's open house. I am so proud of him! My Son Tony has been a great Father to him. He had him by a gal he had only a few contacts with. She got pregnant and after a 3 years decided that she would give my son full custody. It was a selfless thing to do. My son had since met and married his currant wife.He has done a wonderful job raising him.He graduated with highest honors and a full scholarship. His name was in our State Journal today for "First team", All-League Team". His name is Logan Curtis, remember that name, he will be in the big leagues some day lol!!
    Carol I loved your blog! I always love to hear about your family. I loved the picture of you two dancing. He looks like Cary Grant!
    Birdee & LynnD, I loved that you two could relate to my Mr Mary lol!
    Tina, In my family "sopa" was thin spaghetti in a wonderful spicy tomato sauce.
  85. Tina and Mary Sopa means soup, right? The recipes I found for Sopa de Arroz (soup of rice) were for a spanish rice.
    Mary Could the thin spaghetti have been vermicelli? I found recipes using that, too.
  93. Good late evening...I have to laugh that CAROL is wanting to use "SWEAT pea lotion" and thinks TINA is eating soap. CAROL, I don't even want to know how that is made (the lotion).
    I hope everyone had a nice day and enjoyed their Sunday. We went to a bbq at my Uncle's. It was small group and very nice. It's always nice to see some of the family you don't get to see much. My kids spent the day with their dad..so I missed seeing them but I guess that is the pc thing to do on Father's Day....j/k.
    My dad has been gone almost 11 years and I miss him but I don't feel sad today. I have so many wonderful memories and I do wish he was still with us but I talk to him so much...and I am "presuming" he is listening!!!
    Guess I will sign off and talk to you all tomorrow.
