George Bush and OJ Simpson

by Whabby

How do you think George Bush should be treated when he leaves office, owls?

How do you think OJ Simpson should be treated right now (assuming he’s guilty, which I do)?

These questions popped into mind the other day while I was out running. The more I turned them over, the more absorbing and connected they became. At first, I was concentrating on them from a somewhat narrow social perspective, like Jane Austen might have. But it kind of expanded from there.

What if, sometime in your future, just by chance, you happen to be in the same room as OJ Simpson, and an opportunity is obviously coming up to meet him? OJ’s in reasonable health, as far as I know, and will probably live for quite a while, so this is not a completely far-fetched idea; it actually could happen. What would you do? Would you actually meet him? Or would you deliberately avoid the opportunity as a way of expressing (in a nice, non-confrontational, passive way) your disapproval of him and his character?

And what if, instead, the person confronting you with this dilemma is not OJ, but George Bush, who also should be around for quite a while after he leaves office, and so could also be in a position to meet one of us.

I think, quite seriously, that I’d deliberately turn down the opportunity to meet either one of these gentlemen!

That got me thinking about social isolation and its implications. What consequences would there be for day-to-day living if people didn’t want to meet you, didn’t want to invite you to anything involving them, didn’t want to enter into ANY kind of professional or business interaction with you, and so on?

Some of this is part of the fabric of OJ Simpson’s life already. Obviously, no organization or group in its right mind will ever seek any kind of promotional association with him. I’m sure OJ has no speaker fee (at least, I hope fervently that he doesn’t)! Who would want to go and line his pockets and listen to him? And I, for one, sure had zero interest in reading that book he wrote even before it was yanked from the shelves. There are lots of important doors that are forever closed to OJ.

I suspect a lot of you are more or less in agreement with me, on how you’d treat OJ personally, and how you want to see him treated by society. We've made a collective judgment that has had (and will never stop having) a serious negative impact on his life.

Now, what about Bush? In addition to not ever wanting anything to do with him personally, I don’t think I’ll be supporting any fund-raising opportunities involving him (wouldn’t contribute), or any speaking engagements (wouldn’t go), or purchase a book he might write (wouldn’t read it), or, well, you get the idea!

Harsh as it might seem, I suppose that when it comes right down to it, I think OJ Simpson and George Bush deserve to be treated rather similarly after Bush leaves office. As equals, as it were.

Owls, am I being way too harsh on Bush? Should he be afforded the same social courtesies and business opportunities as any other ex-president?

What do you think?

  1. Good morning.

I would never have considered O.J. Simpson and George Bush as equals until reading your blog Whabbear.

It will be quite interesting to see what George Bush does after he leaves the White House. I would think his options would be limited. Being a Canadian I don't really care as long as he doesn't come up to Nova Scotia. I wouldn't shake his hand.

  2. Good morning!

Shirley you're first, congrats! And I'm helping myself to some breakfast before I go to work.

Ugh, I am no fan of George, and OJ, a bigger ugh.

I will have to post later when I get home from work. Very interesting topic Whab.

Hope you all have a great day!

  5. Hi Owls,

I'm getting ready to turn my office into an extra bedroom so I'm not going to have computer access for a few days. Before I do that though, I want to thank those of you who have sent condolences and hugs. Your kindness and compassion have meant a lot to me and members of my family who have seen my page and also read your comments.

My mom arrived on Thursday and will be staying a couple of weeks to help my grandpa. My sister and her family will be arriving today and staying with me, which is why I need the extra bedroom. Dori's visitation is this evening, and her funeral is tomorrow.

I'm not sure when I'll have time to catch up on blogs and comments, but I'll be back as soon as I can.

    Love and Hugs to everyone!

  6. Now, for the topic at hand...

Whabbear, I completely agree! I would avoid meeting either of them (who I don't even think I could call, "gentlemen")!

I have really lost any kind of faith of "justice" in our society. It just shows me that if you have enough money and connections, you can do and have whatever you want!

I believe money is what "freed" OJ the first time around! I also believe money and connections "bought" Bush the presidency (TWICE)!

Unfortunately, Whabbear, there are always going to be people who will believe in people like Bush and OJ! Even HITLER had a following!!!

I know that for every person that likes us, there is always going to be someone that does not. I believe the opposite to be true as well! These men could be the most hated men in history, but there will always be those who will take their sides!

I truly hope I have not offended anyone, esp. since politics (as well as religion) can have varying opinions! This, of course, is merely my "opinion" and I hope others will feel free to agree as well as disagree!

    PEACE!

  7. Good Morning Feathered Friends!

I have missed you all so much. After my first full week of work, I was totally exhausted. Not used to getting up early and I also not used to going to bed early...so a double whammy! And to top it off, I am fighting the sinus/cold crud that is going around. Arrrrggghhhh!

SHIRLEY...I am so glad to see you back in the nest. I hope that means you are feeling better. {{hugs}} to you. And CONGRATS on 1st! I think I will have one of you homemade biscuits, scrambled eggs, regular bacon, orange juice and a big cuppa coffee!

    EBJ...good morning to you too!

WHABBY...thought provoking topic (why doesn't that surprise me!) and I am gonna answer without giving it a lot of thought first.
I would run as fast I could from OJ and I would tell off Dubya. Those are gut instincts.

OJ, in my mind and my heart is a cold blooded murderer. He escaped conviction by a trial, but in the court of public opinion he is guilty as all hell. I would love to tell him off, but I would be scared of him killing me for it. Crazy, I know.

As far as Bushy, I feel he is also a murderer of thousands of military personnel and civilians. But not as directly as OJ. I would tell him what I thought of the way his tenure has changed my life (and it isn't for the better)and the way his antics have made us the laughing stock around the world. Then I may thank him for giving hope to other morons...they too could one day become President of the United States.

I also want to mention yesterdays blog...I loved the 60's! I was just a kid, but I have an older brother, so I was exposed to more then other kids. I loved the passion (the free love was intriguing, too!)for what is right that occured in that time. There certainly was no apathy regarding the Viet Nam Conflict (never declared a war). Even as a little girl, I had my POW bracelet. People stood up and spoke and made their voices ring out loud. And the music...OMG, I still love the music of that era. There were somethings that I didn't really love at the time...the riots, the drugs, my father passing away, us moving from our home in Milwaukee to Cleveland and having to make all new friends. But I also was able to really know my extended family that all lived here.
And it was innocent. I could listen to songs like Go Ask ALice and be playing with my Barbie dolls! And we were safe to play outside and walk home, even after the streetlights had come on.
BONO that was a great topic. I wish I could have been here yesterday!.

Oh craparoni...I miss a few days and I return with a novel! Sorry friends.

  10. I'm very interested to see what George Bush does when he retires.

I really don't think he will be quiet in his retirement.

The same with OJ. He never thought he did any wrong either and he is still constantly in the news.

  13. Morning and welcome back Maureen! AMEN to what you said about Bush being a "murderer" of innocent military men and women!

I am also so sick of how Bush has managed to wrap up Patriotism and religion together! It makes me ILL! It also makes me sick that if you don't "support" the war than you are not a patriot (and you're a "sinner" as well)!

I do not support this war and it makes me ill that we are sending, young and innocent men and women over there for nothing! You're right Maureen, he is a murderer!

If only our voices could be heard like they were in the 60's! (At least people weren't afraid to say what they thought then, even if it went against others)!

This is a great post Whabbear! I will be looking forward to seeing what everyone else has to say!

  19. iteach: I know what you mean. I loved being home with Katie. I am sure it is hard to leave them. However, it's just too hard to be able to afford them if we don't work! That really sucks!

I think we know that the world is not so black and white as we would like it to be. There are many shades of gray (and we should look at that carefully)!

  24. Good Morning Shirley - Congrats on # 1 and for making us breakfast. I will have freshly squeezed orange juice ( I won't call it O.J.) eggs, hash browns, homemade biscuits with marmalade, and tea. Boy that sounds good.

Good Morning Whabbear - thought provoking blog.

Happy Sunday to East Bay J,
Jennifer, Mek, Iteach, Maureen and Amicus.

Amicus - I received your lovely letter thank you. I will be thinking of you tonight and tomorrow. ((((Hugs)))))

I don't know how to put into words my feelings about O. J. and Bush. They are far from positive. Being a Canadian I feel it is not proper of me to express my thoughts about an American president. I think I will keep them to myself and let you imagine what I am thinking. It is the same with judging the American judicial system. We watched that trial for months and couldn't believe what we were seeing. I do think he is getting some punishment here on earth by being ostracized by so many people. I wonder what punishment he will get when he gets to the pearly gates? Only time will tell.

Have a great Sunday all owls everywhere. Aren't Sunday's wonderful?

  25. MEK...please don't feel that you can't be here today. Your opinion counts. I don't have any disrespect for your opinion or you. That is one of the things that make this a free-world. Thankfully, this is a democracy and everyone is entitled to have their own thought processes and not be put down for them. Dialogue is important and I don't think anyone here would bash you for yours. Please stay, we are all friends here.

AMICUS...I have not been around, so I have no idea what happened. But if you need a hug, here's one from me to you {{{{{hugs}}}}}. I gather you had a death in your family, so please accept my deepest condolences for your loss.

    BIRDEE...I also send you my condolences and deepest sympathies. {{{{hugs}}}}

  27. Whabby.....only you~ :) Great topic~

I like Bush~ That didn't sound right, did it? I would meet him any day~ I'd love to sit down with him and talk about his presidency. I think there are things we don't know....can't know about...that are positive......yes we are in a war that many don't agree with....but we are a nation that has the ability to help others and I'm proud that we do. As a nation, we have so much...aren't we supposed to share?

I believe that in the end, we all get what we deserve. Who are we to judge others? I know it's human nature to do so, but I'm far from perfect! During OJ's trial, I was talking with a friend at work, and because of his religious beliefs, he new for a fact that OJ was going to hell. I disagreed with him....I told him that I believed that OJ could be sorry for his sins on his death bed and accept God and go to Heaven. (as an aside...I don't know how that all works yet...) We had a very heated discussion about this that lasted for weeks~

I guess my point is, we are all human. We all make mistakes....no one is perfect....except God and George Clooney~ :)~

Whabby....I just realized I can't talk politics w/o bringing religion in as well~

    Good Morning everyone~

I really hope this makes sense~

  29. Good morning- congrats on 1st Shirley and thanks for the grub!

Whabby, I love your mind. OJ and Bush in the same thought pattern, hmmmm.

Ok, here goes- I actually would love to sit down and talk to OJ! Not that I doubt his guilt- I don't and I think he is a repulsive individual, however I am so damn inquisitive that I want to know how his mind works. No, I would not want to read his book, nor watch an interview. I would just want to sit one on one, ask questions and look into his eyes to see and feel what he says.
Maybe that makes ME the crazy one?

Bush, I just have no interest in meeting. But I do not think society should treat him the same as OJ. Bush has been allowed to do what he has because he was elected and the laws that govern our nation allow it. We can bitch all we want, but until this country changes the way we are governed and the latitude that we allow our "leader" to have, we can not put the sole blame on him. Like it or not he is our President. And should we be respectful of him? Yes, we should. Do I support him and his actions and what I believe his motivations? No I don't. Actually, I am quite opinionated about Bush, but won't go into it here. I have family involved in this war and that scares the shit out of me. I also know someone who lost a loved one working in the World Trade Center (Cantor Fitzgerald) and who believes totally that this war is justified. I can't argue with someone who suffered that kind of loss and believes. Because we all have to believe and hold comfort in what makes us keep going. So I understand that families total support of Bush and his administration.

This is all just my humble little opinion.

Anyway, the long rambling is over for now!

MEK- I respect your decision :)

You are such a sensitive soul! (I wish there were more straight men like you)! LOL!!! Sorry...I should say "ANY" as I am yet to find one! I do hope you remember to take care of "you" too! (People who are so giving of themselves often forget that)!

Shirley, I am so glad you found someone to do the dishes! (That is my biggest beef about cooking...is it is so much work and you are only left with dirty dishes to show)! I have never had a dishwasher either (but I am thinking of having one put in my house...perhaps I will enjoy cooking more)!

  39. Ok lets see if I can put my thoughts into words that make sense.

I will start with OJ do I believe that he got away with murder? Yes I do. This is my opinion only. Would I ever want to meet him or pay to see him? Never. As one of my Aunts would always say to me "What you do here on earth is between you and your maker." Will we answer to a higher power? I think so but I believe in karma also and I think he is living that right now. Like Whabby I was sickened when it was announced that he had written a book! My first thought and One I had never had before was that it should be burned and never see the light of day!

Do I want to meet George Bush or would I pay to see him. Again the answer is no. I would like to say that I feel that way about many past Presidents. I really don't have a groupie mentality at all.

I do respect the office of President but does that person elected President respect me?

I have found in the last 10 or 15 years that I have little respect or patience with our chosen leaders or politicians if you will, because it has become to me not about being a public servant, which implies that you are elected to make descisions based on all of the needs of the people not just your party affiliations. You are not there to promote yourself and or profit off of your own personal beliefs. Idealistic I know, but these are the goggles I see through.

I personally feel that the last two administrations have forgotten about the American people and have been more caught up in special interests and personal gain. Whether they are Repulican, Democrat, Independent etc...

On reflection of the last 8 years I have come to believe that all of us have been living in a state of fear that has been used to control and paralyze us as a nation. We have lost more rights as "We the people" than ever before. I don't just blame the President but all of our elected officials for not going with their gut and standing up and saying NO!

There is a disconnect on so many levels. If you as an elected offical have no clue what a gallon of gas costs or what a mess our health care is or that our children are not being educated and we are losing our middle class, but paying for a war that we must win at any cost, and for what reason I ask?? I have never heard a satifactory answer. The answer is always wrapped in fear and threats. Then I give you an F in my book.

Do I think that George Bush is a war criminal? I will leave that opinion to myself for now because that is very inflammatory and I don't want to go down that road. What I will say is that I personally think he has not been a true leader for our people and our Constitution.

Like some of you have said time will tell. I hope this makes sense and I am not trying to offend just my musings on this topic. Please forgive me if it doesn't.

Now I am wrung out and my pea brain is on overload!

Debating whether to post....Ok here goes I am pushing the button

TOTD is very interesting. OJ is down right scary.
Bush, well, I'm from Texas so we're getting him back either way. He comes a few miles from where I live to hunt with a friend at his ranch. Even if I wanted to meet him well secret service won't even allow me to travel down that road within 3 miles. I was raised in the military and my Dad was sent to the Viet Nam war. My grandpa lost use of his legs at Pearl Harbor. I'm a very patriotic person. I want our country safe at all times, HOWEVER I would like to see our troops come home. Our soldiers over there tell me that they can't just up and pull out but they'd like to get the ball rolling and be out by the end of this year. Many of the soldiers have bonded with these people and want them to be safe.It is complicated at best.
I am anxious to see government change, but ya know a lot of people voted Bush into office not once but twice. I didn't but the majority did.

  44. I could never ever put President Bush in the same category as OJ Simpson

OJ Simpson murdered his wife in cold blood and never looked back, he also knowingly murdered Ron Goldman, and got away with it. He does live a life that does not allow for him to prosper and I am glad for that. He has to live with himself and what he did.

I would never ever want to meet OJ,I would never give him the time of day!

I voted for President Bush, and with all my being believed in this war. I live in NJ and felt 9/11 in my soul. I know people who lost loved ones, and see them often.
We cannot stand by and allow us to be attacked by others. We needed to do something. I was taught to respect my President and I have done so, no matter who was in office. I respect every person in the military for what they do for our country I am a very proud American.

I would meet Bush on an given day
and shake his hand, and thank him for his Presidency, I would do that to all the past Presidents as well.

Perhaps this war did not turn out as it should, and perhaps it went in the wrong direction, However he did something, and now we have a new way of living, and I feel safer!

I am deeply sorry for all the lost lives in our military.

I cannot stress enough how OJ and Bush do not compare it what they did!

Those are my true feelings and I stand by every word.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Afternoon owls!

Thought provoking subject Whab! I haven't read any of the comments yet, so I don't know if anyone has expressed this view.

As you stated, I would not be associated with anything that OJ Simpson was affiliated with.

However, with Bush. I would like to see him he forced to live with some of the decisions he has made and not be able to retire comfortably on his ranch.

For example, I would like to see him live with a family for a year, that has lost a son or daughter in the war.

I would like to see him live for a year with an elderly or disabled person on a fixed income and deal with the rising costs that are a direct effect of this bankrupting war.

I would like for him to live for a year without access to his high priced physicians and only get care that Medicare covers.

I could go on and on, but you get the drift. It seems very unfair to me that one man can create so much havoc in the lives of so many middle Americans and just walk away, no consequences. This recession will never affect him, we are the ones that will pay the price...

Thanks for reving my engine up Whabby....I'll be mumbling about this the rest of the day :)

I hope you return as I very much would enjoy reading your input. I know that you were raised in the military like me. I was just having this discussion with a friend of mine last night, a life long civilian. We discussed honor, being a true American and patriotism. While he and his friends were having their hippie movement my Dad was fighting for their freedom and I spent months and sometimes a year at a time without my Dad. My Dad received very little respect at that time and many times I wondered why my Dad would put his life on the line for dopers and haters. My teen years were ones of wearing a copper wrist band for a soldier that was MIA. No one likes war, but we do enjoy are freedom and the securities we have. I grew up in Germany before the Berlin wall came down and gangs like the Bader Meinhof wanted to blow up Ramstein Base and every man, woman and child on it. I lived in a small town named Steinwenden and I became used to American military tanks coming down the main street before dawn by the dozens and rattling my windows and shaking me out of bed. It was a terriifying experience the first time I witnessed it. I thought we were being attacked. I became used to ground troops training manuevers. I thank God that we don't have to live like that any more.

  50. Good afternoon to everyone!

WHABBEAR: Great blog, interesting, as all your writing is.

I am no fan of either OJ or GWB. I don't know that I would put them in the same category. I see where you're going with that though.

I was taught to always respect my President. So I would never say or do anything around GWB to show him disrespect. Like it or hate it, he is the President. That being said, I also wouldn't walk across the street to meet him or any other politician. I don't think I'd even look twice at OJ. He loves all attention so much, I wouldn't give him any.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi Zonababy - my oldest daughter. I agree with your statement "like it or hate it he is our President". That's how I feel especially since I am not an American. The postition holds respect. What we think of the man is a different issue.

Iteach - I am watching season 2 again with my new T.V. There are lots of things I missed the first time around. It's great isn't it?

This is very interesting reading everyone's opinion and in such a respectful way. That is great. We have a wonderful nest here. Thanks Carol. You are a good guardian.

AMICUS: Again, I am sorry for your loss.

JENNIFER: You can always state your opinion here, no one will judge.

MO: Get some rest and feel better. I've missed you.

ITEACH: LOL @ you waiting for MEK! What team do you like this season?? ;)

MEK: You shouldn't feel you have to leave for the day. That makes me sad.

TINKA: Trust me, we couldn't believe what we were watching when that trial was going on either.

    BIRDIE: Big ginormous {{HUGS}}

LOVEY: Missing you. {{{HUGS}}} to you too.

    VIG: WRITE IT!!..please..:)

TINA: It makes sense. I was taught "Judge not..lest ye be judged" too. I'm afraid I haven't been very good at listening to this though. My movie is gonna be in HD AND 3D...

  56. I see today is not my comment day either. I may not agree with Our President on some things, but I don't care for Bush Bashing. I don't think he woke up one day and said " I think I will take all these wonderful sons and daughters who pledged their allegiance to their country and put them in harms way to make me look good". My son was a Marine who proudly served our country in Dessert Storm. I cried many a night worried about him. There are many parents who are going through the same thing right now. My prayers are with all of them. My Owl feathers have been ruffled. No disrespect to Whabby, but I do hope in the future we can leave politics out of our lovely nest.

  62. Please understand that I DO NOT mean this as a criticism of anyone! (just in case it sounds that way)

I do have a question that I have wondered about many times...If it's not polite to talk about politics with others, how can we ever hope to fix the things that are troubling our county. We NEED a free exchange of ideas and opinions in order to learn from each other and right whatever wrongs exist, no matter who caused them.

Where would we be, for example, if no one talked about AIDS? Remember when it first began? Remember when persons afflicted were isolated? Remember when gays were as well? I really believe that those situations have improved due to communication.

It's no secret due to my earlier post, that I do not think of Bush's Presidency with fondness, but it was interesting to me to read how Carol feels safer due to his actions and to realize that in all probability, others feel the same way. I never would have considered that on my own.

I guess in my long-winded way, what I'm trying to say is that people need to have an more active voice in the running of our country and how can we have that if we don't talk?

  63. I hadn't planned on visiting my mom today but I just got back from seeing her. I couldn't find her. We looked and looked. Finally we discovered someone had let her out into the courtyard and she was trying to find her way home. She was cold with just a light sweater on and scared. I don't think she would have been discovered missing until dinner which was two hours away. They just don't have enough help in these care homes. Anyway she is safe and no permanent harm done. Sorry Bear but I think it was something out of this world that told me to visit at a time when I never visit her. Something or someone told me she needed me. Believe it or not.

  64. Good Evening Owls! I am finally sitting down at my computer today and catching up.

Well Whabbear, at first I thought you were asking "what would we do if we were ever incidentally in the same place at the same time?" That changes things a lot. I would NEVER pay a penny to see either of these men. What a waste of hard earned money THAT would be!

However, I had to ask myself... what if I was in a public place and just happened to look up and saw one of these people standing there? OR... better yet... what if I found myself in a situation where one of these men were stranded on a desert highway and I was the only car in sight?

I can tell you... I would keep on driving. There is no way I would waste a second of my time on these people. I would likely call 911 and have help sent for them, only because I wouldn't want to live with the guilt of them dying on the desert sand and becoming vulture-chow. But I would certainly wave as I flew past... and probably scream something out the window as I watched them become a blur in my rearview mirror.

Mama always said it isn't safe to pick up a hitch hiker... and in that case she would be 100% right!

  70. Carol, Joey and Scirish - It really was strange. I have never in the 8 years mom has been in that home have I ever visited at that hour. I always go at 10:30 and stay until her lunch and then come home and have a rest. I wasn't feeling that well today so I wasn't going to visit. I was on the computer at 2:30 when suddenly I got a feeling I was needed down there. I didn't take the dogs as I usually do, I just rushed out. When I got there, she was no where to be found. They would have found her but it would have been two hours later when they were getting everyone to dinner. She would have been pretty cold by then. Thank God for angels. I am off for a rest. See you all tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Tink- so glad your Mom is ok.
My dad was having surgery once and we were sitting waiting for them to let us know when he was in recovery. We waited, we waited and finally I went to the desk. They checked, and checked and checked. Nope, not in surgery- nope not in recovery, nope not in his room- nope not in the morgue! They lost him- parked him somewhere for a bit and lost him!!! Oy- that was not a good day. Had we not had a search party who knows how long he would have been left alone and unattended. We laughed about it later, but I think it was one of the few times in my life that I saw my Mother loose her cool and let loose on someone!

Joey, you do have wonderful friends. I have known your story for a long time now, and I still admire what you did and how proud you are of your brothers/sons.

    ReplyDelete
  72. GOLDIE: They lost me in the hospital! I was in for a CATscan as a teenager for headaches. They took me to what I thought was the basement in a wheelchair. I had the scan done. I was parked outside the room and told to stay there. I did. For over 90 minutes. It was seriously creepy. I was afraid if I tried to find my way out I would be lost for good.

TINKA: I am so glad you went early and your mom is ok.

I just got booted out of Myspace again...I'm getting a complex on my complex.

  73. Wow, so many feelings going through my mind right now. I read today's blog hours ago, and did not know if I should respond or not.

I do not get involved in political or religous discussions as a rule.

But, I must say, I do not believe you can compare OJ and GWB.

Yes, they both did harm to others. But in different ways. And if given the opportunity, I would not want to meet either one. For many different reasons, which I will not go into.

~~Scirish~~ your post @ 2:10 pm, is the one that hit home to me the most.

Right now I am having major bureaucratic issues regarding my daughter Laurie's Social Security Benefits. Basically, because she got a 2.3 percent cost of living increase this year, she is now $5.35 OVER the Federal Aged and Disabled Poverty Level. YES , I said $5.35!

That means, basically that because she is $5.35 over, her Medical now wants her to have a $502.00 share of cost!!! Can that really be happening???

In turn, her other services, now want to charge her another large amount of share of cost for In Home Care, because she does not now fall below the Poverty level. And Laurie needs 24/7 supervision.

I will not give you the $$ numbers that she is given each month, that is private. But,to subtract those above numbers I just told you, her living income would be around $800.00 a month. WHO IN THIS UNITED STATES could live on that income? Mr. Bush, what do you pay for a new suit?

If she didn't live with me, she would be put into a "Group Home", where no one cares about the clients, (YES, there are some wonderful Homes out there, but they are few and far betweeen) and every Social Worker I have spoken with over the last 15 years agrees with me that it is best to keep people, aged, disabled, etc, in a loving family environment.

I don't know who to blame. Is it this current Administration? Will the next Administration (hopefully NOT Republican) be able to change the Poverty level?

I don't know. All I know is that I have to find a way to fix this.

I am not the only one affected by this. There are literally hundreds of thousands of the aged and disabled that this will effect.

Is there an answer? Probably not.

I have to not now only worry about Laurie's health, and her upcoming heart surgery, but now, I have to fill out pages upon pages of applications, reviews, etc, just to get her back UNDER their Poverty Level. If I can!

What about those people out there that do not have advocates, like family to help them. Who will be there for them?? And they say WE are the the most wonderful country to live in. I do agree, in part, but this kind of stupid legislation is crazy!

I guess I said too much, got too involved in politics. But when it comes to my daughter, I am a Mother Lion, or Tiger!

I will fight until I can't fight any longer.

~~Carol~~ you are so right, some Blogs are lighthearted and funny, others nostalgic and still others very controversial. Today's was the latter. But it was good.

~~Tinka~~ What a scare you had today! Yes, it is very hard for the staff to keep their eyes on all the guests, but I am so very happy your story turned out with a happy ending! I am so glad that your "internal instinict" said to go check on Mother!

I am so stressed out now from all the things that happened this week, reading the posts, and actually posting myself, that I am going to say goodnight.

I will most likely come back before bed and read the last of the comments.

    Have a wonderful Sunday evening.

Peace and Love to all, DonnaJean and Laurie Elizabeth

  74. Checking in Owls!

I am proud that even in controversy we all are respectful of each other! Thank you Owls!

I agree with Scirish, Carol and Donna Jean if we don't discuss even the squirmy topics, we don't know what another is feeling or gain an understanding of them.

I had no idea until reading Donna Jeans post about the changes made to the benefits for the disabled and elderly. This makes me so sad but not surprised. Donna Jean my heart goes out to you and Laurie Elizabeth!

    When will this madness end?

Tinka: I am so glad you listened to your gut instinct and went and checked on your Mother!! Yes I believe it was a Guardian Angel too!

Joey: That was fantastic for you! How wonderful of Bobby to show you appreciation in such a caring way!

To all of you! I may not always agree with you but I will always like you because you have all always demonstrated caring and compassion to me and each other!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I do apologize if my harsh opinions were hurtful to anyone! That was not my intention. I agree with so many that we do need to be able to have 'adult' discussions about the things that really have substance in our society! (And we should be happy that we live in a place where we can do so freely)!

Tink: I am so happy to hear that you listened to that "inner" voice and went to see your mother. I'm glad she is OK. I still haven't visited my grandmother in the nursing home because I can't stand to see her like she is now! (I know that sounds selfish). However, my mom went to see her yesterday and my grandmother asked how she had got there! She didn't even remember being in the hospital! (She was "alert" the entire time...or so we thought)!

Joey: I think it is great you were such a great brother/mom/dad! You deserve all the good in life your receive!

Well, I'm off to bed. Break is over and now it's back to work (right iteach?)! : (

    Good night!

  86. There are so many things swirling around in my head to address regarding Whab's blog post and all of the insightful comments. I can't address all of yours, but I will pick out a couple of highlights that are forefront in my mind:

    1. Tinkatia - I don't know you at all but your name is so dinstinct and familiar from the the blog I first saw you on. I am glad you listened to that little voice you heard to go see your mom, you may well have averted a tragedy today.

    2. Donna Jean- my oh my, where does one begin?... My response is that I hope others can learn from your story about the plight of the disabled person in this country. Be it a mental illness, a developmental disabliltiy, a physical disability, etc., we just have an inadequate system to address the care that is needed. Whenever my kids and I see a "homeless" person (general term for one who is struggling to manage a daily life, usually wandering the streets in filth and disarray), I am very quick to point out that they may very well be suffering from a developmental delay or mental illnes, and our country has turned these folks out on their ear. If not for concerned and capable moms and dads like you, Donna, where would your Laurie be today? Think about that. All of the hassles you endure would be exponetially compounded for her if you weren't willing to go through it with her... What about the rest who don't have the resources of family? What is happening to these folks?

    3. And finally Whab, to address your thought-provoking post...I'm ducking for cover on this one. Here's the deal. My politics run the gammet. I am usually quite liberal on a social level, and a bit more conservative on a fiscal level. GWB, in my humble opinion, was elected on emotion, not reason. Al Gore was fighting the stigma of Bill Clinton's indiscretions, which in light of our world situation today seem actually quite TAME, but nonetheless I think he suffered because of it. And many would argue that Gore actually did win, but I don't have the detailed info. at my fingertips to argue that point.

OJ, oddly enough, (allegedly) slaughtered his ex wife and her friend just a few steps from where Mr. GG and I lived when he went to grad school at UCLA. We moved from that condo about one year BEFORE the murders, so when the trial was being televised, I was mesmerized by it knowing that I had walked by that address on a daily basis.

As much as I'd like to think that on principle I'd run the other direction from OJ or GWB because of their past actions, I think my human emotions and curiosity would kick in and I would be unable to resist the experience of meeting someone of infamy. Kind of like shaking hands with Al Capone, Bonnie and Clyde, John Gotti or Tony Soprano if he was a real person. A morbid curiousity would probably get the best of me - I'm weak in that way! I would want to look them in the eye to see what I could see. Of course I have my opinions about their character, but the opportunity to meet someone who had made an imprint on our world, for the good or bad, would be too irrestistible. That's just me...
