This Night Owl Blog has given so much! It is a fun place, we don't bash and we have fun being "tedious"! We offer advice, give love, lots of free food and an open forum which can be about anything that is important, thought provoking or just plain silly. And sometimes we just March (some to different drummers, but all together). :) It is not about a single person, it is about all the people on any given day blended together.....Goldie!

The Place Where We Live
The Place Where We Live
by scirish
I'm not sure where that phrase comes from, It's not grammatically correct, but I'm sure I have heard it before. Maybe a book or movie?
Anyway…I spend way too much time thinking about obscure things…and I was thinking about if where we lived makes us who we are…did I mention obscure?
I've lived all over the place; Dad was a test engineer for Boeing. We moved a lot. The places I remember were MA, CT, FL, UT, PA, CA, DE. When I got married, I lived in DE, MD, VA, TX and Germany. During these travels I got to see a lot of the US and parts of Europe. I would like to see more of both.
It wasn't always that way. When I was a kid, it didn't really bother me to move that much. Until I became a "tween". Then I was an odd man out. Everyone else had grown up with each other. I was a perpetual new kid.
In my late teens, early 20's I lived in DE and MD. People say that isn't in the south, but don't say that to the people that live there. Because of all the moving, I have no accent, but that just means I sound odd anywhere that people do have one.
In MD and DE I sound northern. In MA (after a drink or two) I sound southern. Who knows when I sound German J What I like to think I took away from all the moving is the best of all places. I could list the good and bad parts of the south and the north, but they are just generalizations, and those, although they exist, are bad.
When I went back to college here in the north, I had a class in which we were talking about stereotypes and this women who was my age apologized for thinking all people from the south were stupid because they talked and moved slower that people in the north. I was rather shocked, my then husband had been telling me what a hard time he was having at his job at Sikorski (building aircraft, no less) because of his accent and I just could not picture that happening.
When I lived in the south, the question you got when meeting someone for the first time was: "Who's your family?"You were judged on the past performance of family members. That was intimidating enough, but, if you moved down there in the last 20 or so years, you were an outsider.
I know nothing about how Midwesterners or West coasters (or beyond…turtle?) interact with each other or outsiders. Are there any preconceptions you have faced based on where you live/lived? East Coasters, Northerners? Canadians? Do you have preconceived notions about people from other areas? (it's ok, many people do, until they go there) Commence lively discussion please….I would really like hear about the place where everyone lives.
Good Morning Hooters!!!!
ReplyDeleteHow is Everyone today?
I feel pretty good. Finally got to sleep in my bed last night!
We still have the floor to put down (need to pick what kind too) but at least the painting and cleaning is done! With the leaks we had, we had some mold in there!
We must have gotten it all, because I don't remember coughing all night and I woke up feeling fine! Between gutting the bathroom and the new roof, I think we are on our way....but lot's more to do!
I miss you all and Hope you have a wonderful day. Off to buy some rug's later this morning. Gotta go through the sale ads!
Love to ALL!!!
xoxoxo
Lynn D, I hope you feel better today!
ReplyDeleteMary, You and your are in my Prayer's!

Morning Birdee, Scirish and everyone else. I am going to make a quick comment and then go back to bed. The nieghbors were partying until 4:30 this morning, So even though it is 10:30 I'm going to turn the phone off and go back to bed.
ReplyDeleteI haven't traveled so I don't know what the rest of Canada is like but I know in Nova Scotia there is definately different accents depending on where you are from. You can just tell if someone is from Cape Breton or the south shore of the province as soon as they speak.
I don't know what I sound like to other. Hmmmmmmm. Good-night.
Oh, and could you keep the morning chit chat low so I can sleep? Thanks.
ReplyDeletesshhhhhhh ZZZZZzzzzz
Good Morning Feathered Friends!
ReplyDeleteBIRDEE...good morning! How did you do that? FIRST!! Hoot Hoot!
Have you gotten to break in your new toi-toi yet? LOL
SHIRLEY...I'm sorry you had a rough night. Get some well deserved rest and come back later. I will be waiting for your food delivery!! bwahaha
I hope all of you owlettes have a great day today! We have this thing I think is sun! It's been so long! AND it is supposed to hit 60!
See ya later
Good morning !
ReplyDeleteEverytime I travel people immediately say "You must be from Chicago".
Actually I am two hours west of Chicago. They say I sound like someone from Chicago, because I talk fast.
One time when I was in Arizona, I went to the store.
I asked the cashier if a certain item was two bucks.
Right away she said oh my you must be from Chicago. She said only Chicago people say "bucks".
Good Morning Birdee - Number one in the nest this morning.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning also to Maureen, Shirley and Scirish who wrote the blog this morning. I will be back in 10 minutes to read it.
Good Morning Iteach - You flew in while I was typing.
ReplyDeleteSCIRISH...Congrats on an interesting blog.
ReplyDeleteI guess we are called the mid-west here in northeast Ohio, but not really. I like to call us the NorthCoast! I don't think I have an accent, but you would have to ask someone else that! I did live a year in Allentown, PA and then Los Angeles...and people always said I sounded like a midwesterner. So I don't know!
There are regional words, like ITEACH mentioned. The most common one I can think of this early is Soda and Pop. In Wisconsin, we called it soda, in Ohio it is Pop and in L.A, it is soda. So I try to call it SodaPop!
Morning all! Birdee, congrats on #1! Shirley, I hope you get some rest (I'll try to lower my voice...as I have a tendency to talk loud)! ; )
ReplyDeleteMorning Mo, iteach, and Tink!
I am sorry I missed some great blogs, but "life happens"!
Thanks for all the nice e-mails and comments I received! I have learned you don't have to be blood related to have family! That is certainly the case with my Filipino family (who I credit to raising me).
Now, for the TOTD! However, I think iteach summed in up (as we live in basically the same town...as they are twin cities). Yes, the Chicago accent is very distinct! (Still have yours K'girl?) However, our state is big enough to have other accents too. If you go down to the Springfield area and further south, you will hear different accents (as you get closer to Missouri). I have noticed even Wisconsin has almost the Minnesota accent (You KnOw what I mean?...dOn't ya knOw)! ; )
I love listening to different accents and trying to guess where people are from. I must toot my own horn and say I am pretty good at it! ; )
Yes...iteach DOES talk fast! (I thought "I" did...but I have met my match)! ; )
Maybe that's why my posts are so long? If you read them as fast as I mean for them to be said, they wouldn't be that long! ; )
Katie's finally out of the shower, so I had better hurry her along so we won't be late for church!
ReplyDeleteI do have a paper to write today...but it's just a short one...so I may be back to play later!
Good Morning Jennifer - All the teachers are up early on a Sunday morning. I am going to read the post and comments. Be back in a few minutes.
ReplyDeleteGood morning!
ReplyDeleteThought I'd pop in before I leave for work.
Hi Birdee, good to see you!
And Jennifer, LTNS.
Hi Carol and Shirley and Maureen and Iteach and Tink!
I've noticed people from the midwest say pop, people from the west say soda. And people from the east coast call a purse a pocketbook.
Will be back later, have a nice Sunday!
I am going to put some thought into my post and comment later in the day. It is a great post Scirish and one could easily write a 1000 word essay on this topic. I will just say one thing. I travelled a lot over the course of 8 years and I discovered that a lot of people have a preconceived idea about Canadians. I was so surprised that many thought it snowed almost all year in Canada, that people did live in igloos and that a common sight would be to see the Mounted Police riding horses throughout the towns. I thought that was a joke until I actually encountered it. Be back after messages. Have a great day all owls who are not in the nest yet today.
ReplyDeleteMorning Glories!
ReplyDeletebirdee got first!! Wow you are up early flapping your wings!
Great Blog Scrishy! I will have to think on this one! Not enough coffee yet!
To all of you who posted about my ankle problem Wow! You have given much food for thought this morning. A little scared too! Even a PrOWLer (thanks for the new word Bono!) jumped in! Hi Biscy!
Thank you Sacbarb for my morning LOL! I see you trying to look like you fit in at the Best Western so you can steal internet time! LMAO I even read it to Mr. Lynn D and he was chuckling pretty good!
Ok let me grab some Joe and ruminate on the blog will be back in a bit!
Good morning, owls! Quick one here, as I have to leave for a tennis match.
ReplyDeleteI get the impression that people think that Canadians, in addition to all the qualities Audrey mentioned, snow, igloos, mounted police, etc., I get the impression that Americans think Canadians are "affable buffoons"! LOL!
Even after living in the Bay Area for 21 years, I still give away my Canadian roots when I say a word with "out" in it. Gets me every time!
OK, wheeling and gliding away to the tennis courts... later!
Well Scirish you and I are kindred spirits! LOL Because I spend alot of time thinking of obscure things too!
ReplyDeleteI have lived in WA state my whole life. Tho I have lived in Seattle, Aberdeen,Hoquim,Everett,Edmonds,Lynwood,Kennewick,Yakima,Wenatchee,Tacoma,Puyallup and Rainier. All in WA state. Mr. Lynn D has worked for WA State Dept of Transportation for much of this time and we have had to relocate for his different jobs.
I have found in this state that big cities don't really differentiate where you are from and for the most part don't ask. However in the smaller towns they do.
When we lived in the Tri Cities, Kennewick and also in Wenatchee, I found I had a hard time connecting or relating to many of the people I met. These towns to me were very clique oriented. If you weren't in one of the cliques people weren't very warm or inviting.
Rainier was a bit of a slow welcome also. Not for my kids the schools are so small that new kids were an oddity and the town kids welcomed new blood if you will, with curiosity and friendship.
When I got involved with volunteer work I actually had a woman ask me where I came from and why did I want to volunteer here? I thought that was very odd. I have realized that this small town still has many of the original homestead families that still live here. They seem to think that they decided who will be accepted and if you have lived here less than 10years you are still somewhat of an outsider. Very strange to me! Actually it boggles my mind! LOL You would think they would welcome any fresh blood that will help.
The best way I can describe it in my mind is a very clanish society. I will say even the people they grew up with seem at times to be excluded. I have just ignored the, what I consider silliness and went about my business. Maybe a little pushy but oh well.
I had a step mother who was from Alabama. She had the southern accent and I never thought about whether her accent meant she was slower or less intelligent. It was her prejudices that made me decide that! I learned early on that she was very predjudiced about anyone who was not white! She would make her feelings very well known. I can remember thinking when I was about 12 or 13 that she was a very ignorant and angry person. Let's just say we did not agree but I kept my mouth shut and formed my own opinions.
I personally am fascinated with accents and like to hear about how we do things different in other parts of the US and beyond.
Oh by the way my family and friends have always said Pop not soda!
Tho I did have cousins who moved here from Wisconsin and I remember the first time they asked if I wanted a soda. I had to ask them what they meant. LOL
Whabbear and Tinka: I personally have never thought that Canadians live in igloos, or that all of your police ride horses! LOL
ReplyDeleteThe Canadians I have met are so extremely polite that they were a little intimidating! LOL
Whabbear: is that out or is it pronounce oot? like about or aboot? I always found that charming!
Lynn - Oh my dear I didn't mean to sound like all Americans think we live in the frozen North. I was just so surprised that anyone thought that but it's true. There are some people I met who were surprised that we had heat waves in the summer and that Mounted Police weren't the norm.
ReplyDeleteBy the way can you tell me if a month is too long to wait for an Ebay package? Zona thought you would be the one to ask. I paid for two dalmatians a month ago. I wrote the lady a week ago and asked her when she mailed it. She did not answer me. Do you think I have a problem or does this happen often?
twenty!!
ReplyDeleteGood Morning
Tinka: I did not think you were implying that we all believed that about Canda. LOL
ReplyDeleteTinka what kind of shipping did you pay for? Is it coming from overseas? etc.. American seller or Canadian?
I ask these questions because they do have bearing on how long a package will take to be delivered.
If it is coming from America I have shipped things to Canada in the past where it has taken up to a month to be delivered. Most of the time it is less than 2 weeks. I don't know why but I did hear that some items seem to get hung up in the Canadian customs.
However I would email your seller again. Keep your documentation. If you do not hear back in a timely manner ( I usually give them 2 days) then I would consider filing a Paypal complaint. I am assuming you paid by Paypal.
If you need more help with this later email me at myspace! Hope this helps!
Good Morning...
ReplyDeleteBirdee - wrote a novel and was STILL number ONE - congrats!! good to see you!!
Scirish - great blog...
Living in Colorado most my life - there were people from ALL over, so there wasn't ONE accent, etc. - kinda like a "melting pot" - even though - when I go places, i am told that I HAVE an accent -
I LOVE to mock my sister - cuz she has a STRONG southern accent!! But when I visit - I'm the only one that sounds funny to THEM!! Having spent every summer of my growing up years in VA - I tend to have some twang on certain words -
Here in AZ - this is a different world and hard to explain - being this close to the border. Employers want bilingal employees - i do not speak spanish...
Whabby - yes, you say aboot!!
:-) love ya!!
I tend to say soda and pop, sometimes soda pop - in Texas, they call EVERYTHING a coke - but they mean pop....... so confusing.
I say buck and dollars - never had thought about that until today - depends on my mood, I guess -
now, I'm going to be thinking about this all day!! LOL...
and - speaking of my day - I need to get going with it!! Lots to do..
I hope everyone has an excellent day!!
:-)
Good morning all owlettes.
ReplyDeletescirish Thank you for today's blog. What a great topic.
birdee As busy as you are, you still managed to be #1. Congrats to you.
One of Custard's pet names for me is Dixie Girl because I was born in Florida. We moved to Calif. when I was 4 yrs old so I certainly don't feel southern. Except for kindergarten, all my school years were in the same So. Calif. town. Custard and I both have wonderful fond memories of growing up there and we had a blast visiting our old schools and other places on our recent visit. I have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1967. This is a very diverse area. So many people come from other places to settle here. Native San Franciscans are quite proud of being so.
SCIRISH - Great blog!!!
ReplyDeleteBeing from Wisconsin, yes I do call it soda, and I do sound like a borderline Minnesotan (don'tcha know!!!) What I find funny is how people say Wisconsin......it usually sounds more like WESconsin!!! Just sounds goofy to me. But there is also the difference between how the people of the great state of Oregon pronouce their state and how we pronouce the Village that I live in. We pronounce it like OrREgon. Ok, enough rambling for now.
JENNIFER - Yes, I guess ITEACH does talk fast, but I guess I'm used to it - having a 13 year old daughter that is a motor mouth!!! Oh, BTW TINA can attest to that!!! :P
ITEACH - How was MR. ITEACH's party last night?
ReplyDeleteTOTD:
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Germany and traveled all over Europe as a teen. My Dad was Air Force. My ex was an MP in the military so I still traveled. I have lived on the west coast and the east coast. Californians live a fast paced lifestyle. East coast is a lot more tame. I also lived in Florida, WVA, near Memphis, near New Orleans (southern Louisiana is like stepping back in time with alligators and swamps). Now I reside in Texas and have lived all over the state. Austin is fast paced and most people who live there are very business oriented, a bit snobbish and very health conscious as far as diet and exercise. South Texans enjoy a huge plate of tacos, gaucamole or a pounder steak and love every moment of clogging their arteries. :0)When I lived in College Station that area of people loved to hunt deer, quail, doves, rabbits and even squirrels. I prefered grocery store meats.
Wabbear
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I have docked you many times in chat and never caught on to "out". I always just noticed that your voice is distinguished and like a perfect radio talk show type of voice.
Grandma Moses
Wow, now GM has the neatest NY accent. I just love listening to her talk.
Birdie
high 5 on getting #1 and how about that..you did a #2 in the nest also.
I'm out of here. Spring has sprung and we are going to see the Blue Angels perform.
Good afternoon all !!!
ReplyDeleteBirdee--- #### 1 !!!!!
Congrats...
Hope you get all your stuff done soon....Welcome back.. missed you...
Scrishy-- I love it when LynnD calls you that!!!!
What a great blog...
My little town... not so little anymore...
My goodness we just got a Target.. Lowes... TGIFriday....Applebys...and Quiznos... checkers...Staples.. Walmart will open June!!!! two major shopping centers.. across the street from one another
But till this last year ... we were a little town in the Shenanadoah Valey... The Civil War was fought all around and in this town... Hell people still fly the confederate flag in this town... and yes we have southern accents... When MEK was visiting .. she came to see me at work.. I said something very southern and she went to poke fun.. and a co-worker looked at her and said ... "You are the only that sounds funny here!!!"
and we call it soda... but when I was in Colorado it was POP.. that took a little getting used to when I first moved here...
And I moved here my senior year... I was a total OUTSIDER... these kids had been to pree school together... or lived next door their whole lives... it was very hard to break in!!!
But being military... we moved every 3-4 years... so you had to have out going personality to survive...
So that is where MEK and I get it....
Eery one have a great day....
Morning to all in this very busy nest...
How about EVERY one have a great day!!!
ReplyDeleteLynn - Thanks for answering. I ordered 2 dalmatian dogs and paid for it by Pay Pal to some one in the states.
ReplyDeleteI don't seem to be lucky with EBay. I have told you about my past experiences. Well this time I thought I would try once more. My other two orders came in two weeks. Those sellers e-mailed me after they mailed them. This time I sent an e-mail asking her when she sent them but I didn't get an answer. I know our Canadian Postal service can be so slow and things can be hung up at Canadian customs. At what point to I get concerned? Thanks for helping me.
love, Tinka
Tinka-- I gave up on ebay whe n I got stuff that was stained and dirty... awas told to be new... or like new.. and when it took 3 weeks to get to me in the states...
ReplyDeleteand I was one of those narrow minded people that think ---CANADA=COLD ie.. hockey... Since I have never been there... Just didn't know....
It just goes to show how it is presented to us.. as to why we would think that!!!
Enjoy the movie....I miss having little ones around... I would always volunteer to take them to the movies... Beacause I wanted to see thaem myself!!!
Afternoon All! Thought I would stop in before going off to my big task today, giving Nikki a bath! That should be interesting! ;)
ReplyDeleteSCIRISH: Good blog today! My parents were both born and raised in Cleveland Ohio. They moved to Pennsylvania, where my sister and I were born, and lived there about eight years. Then it was on to Arizona.
Even after 39 years here, when my mom got upset, she would say "Don't stir my Cleveland up!" We were always told that folks in Cleveland were tough and didn't take any lip from anyone. You would think she would have mellowed out over the years..nope. Even when she was 70..you didn't want to stir that Cleveland up!
Arizona is really kind of a laid back state. People are nice here, but I have always noticed something when our two seasons change...that would be summer to fall and fall to summmer!! In the cooler weather, people walk a little faster and if you are driving through a parking lot, they'll wave you on and walk off the curb behind you with a smile. In the summer, it's like the world is in slow motion. No one looks where they are going, they just keep their heads down and keep walking. I think they are looking for air conditioning! It's kind of an every person for themselves world in Arizona in the summer!
Now to read the other posts.
Dose this count... I couldn't only pick out 15... so I want to send it to everyone "In the Nest"....
ReplyDeleteIf you're pretty and you know it,clap your hands :D!This is a toast to us, for the men who have us, the losers who had us,and the lucky bastards who are going to meet us! Send this only to fifteen pretty ladies, including me if you'd consider me on that list.. you've been hit!you've been considered one of the fifteen prettiest girls on my friends list!once you've been hit,you have to hit fifteen pretty girls.
BIRDEE: Hey you cute ChickenOwl!! Congrats on FIRST!! "Bawk-Whoo!!" Sorry, just learning your language! ;)
ReplyDeleteSHIRLEY: Hope you were able to get some sleep and are bright eyed and chipper this afternoon!
MAUREEN: I'm having a Twilight Zone moment..both of my mom's parents lived in Allentown when they were kids..then moved to Cleveland!
ITEACH: My neighbor is from Chicago, and even after years of living in Manitou Springs Colorado and then here in Arizona, she still says "Chi-caaa-go" she doesn't think she does though.
JENNIFER: How's the paper going?
TINKA: Hi my sweet friend! I sure wish that I could have sent you some tacos and spanish rice yesterday, they came out wonderful! Every Canadian I've talked to has been warm and friendly and extremely nice! :)
EBJ: All soft drinks to me are 'Coke'..even rootbeer..I'm challneged that way! How is Paula doing BTW?? Good, I hope!
WHABBEAR: I think that impression comes from the skit on SCTV.."The Great White North".
LYNND: LOL at PrOWLer!! I hope you weren't too scared..we just want you to feel better. :)
MEK: I think AZ has become quite a melting pot too, especially in the winter when we get the Snowbirds.
J/LIN: I don't know why, but I never think of Florida as a southern state--eventhough it is just about as South as you can get!
JODI: I absolutely LOVE your accent! And your laugh is so contagious!
IBB: So glad to see you!! Hope you are feeling better. Mr. Z's mom was born and raised in West Virginia...and she always had an accent..even 50 years after moving to California.
I am going to try and give my wiggly dog a bath now..hope I don't end up soaked!!
IBB: LOL!!!! It counts! :)
ReplyDeleteIBB Now you did it the right way! Everyone on this blog is beautiful! No exceptions!
ReplyDeleteSwooping through briefly over lunch......Another great topic, Scirish! I was surprised to see someone post earlier of the faster-paced life of California and the West Coast than on the East. I've always thought the opposite. In my first career, I spent a lot of time on the phone with NYC brokers, and could never listen as fast as they can talk! And, as much as I enjoyed visiting there, I found the crowds, noise and pace a bit claustrophobic.
ReplyDeleteWhile East Coasters may think I live in the Willa-METTE Valley of Oree-GONE, I actually live in the Wil-LAMB-ette Valley of OR-agun, phonetically speaking. (Which reminds me, 'teach...here's a thing that makes me go 'hmmmmm'. Why isn't 'phonetically spelled with an 'f' instead of a 'ph'... Isn't that oxymoronic?)
I think our Canadian friends to the north come a bit closer to using the Queen's English than we here do. I enjoy reading our Canadian Owls' mentions of the 'theatre', 'flavour', 'colour', etc., and feel I'm a bit of a slacker with my use of contractions (compared to Tinka's "I shall's"), dropped assumed subjects in written sentences when blogging, and the occasional "y'all". While born and raised in the PNW, most of my family is from and still in the South (OK, GA, NC). After spending her entire life in Washington, my daughter still needs a translator now that she's living in NC. She's forever regaling me with new expressions she's picked up there.
The differences I find in where I've lived revolve more around the 'things' people value than the words they use. When we lived on Mercer Island (Seattle 'burb), I was a bit embarrassed to drive my little Hyundai around. The community was referred to as "Mercedes Island" but most vehicles were Porsches, Jag's, Hummers. Here, it's all about the size of your truck and how many gun racks and fishing poles it has, or how many of your causes you can display on bumper stickers. I really think I need to move closer to LynnD, somewhere in the middle!
Zona As Custard pointed out to me, Florida is definitely below the Mason-Dixon line, therefore it is in the South. My mother moved there from Cincinnati with her family after high school. She considered everyone there to be "crackers". She had never seen segregation before.
ReplyDeleteJ/LIN: My mom always said that Ohio was a Southern state. WHAT? I would argue is was Eastern or at the most mid-Western..nope..she maintained it was southern. I don't know why she thought this. I guess I'll have to ask MAUREEN!
ReplyDeleteGooc Afternoon Owls: I think Colorado has people from many places here. It is funny though, I was born in New York and my mother and dad came here when I was three. My dad was from Colorado but not my mom. She NEVER adjusted to Colorado people being too slow for her (walking, talking, etc). She always looked down on we "cow-pokes" people from Colorado. Oh yea, and how people dressed when they went out here. Family still in New York think we are in piles of snow most of the time except when we take out our covered wagons! lol
ReplyDeleteI love hearing so many accents of different areas and I love how the Canadians speak!! TINK AND WHABBY; We took a cruise to Alaska and didn't even need a jacket in July and they drove cars not sleds! I guess that kind of surprised me a little (the jacket part).
WHABBY: You didn't answer JustLin's question to you and I was kind of wondering the same thing regarding Dr Dan! My follow up question to JustLin's is why would someone post a picture like that? Maybe I am missing something (which very well could be).
I am going to spruce up and sit down and read the Sunday paper now. I love Sundays!
I am off to work!!1
ReplyDeleteYa'll Have fun tonight...
Might be back , if I get home early!!!!
Later!!
Dianne It seems I recall that CG is scared of the little people of the Lollipop Guild. So I think that's why Whabby's face and privates were superimposed on the little person's body and shown holding hands with CG.
ReplyDeleteGood Afternoon Owls!
ReplyDeleteI'm a Midwest gal, and in my neck of the woods, Coke, Pepsi, etc. are called soda. We say "you guys" instead of "you all." I'm not sure if this is a local mispronunciation or just a family habit, but we add an "r" to "wash" (sorry Lynn!). ;)
Mispronunciations that make me cringe...
"Illinois" - the "s" is supposed to be silent.
"Missoura" - it's spelled with an "i" not an "a".
:)
Scirish: Thanks for writing today's blog!
Have a wonderful Sunday, friends!
Waving a wing @ DIANNE!!! I have tomorrow off - and will be on the hunt for your curds!!! Enjoy reading the paper!!
ReplyDeleteZONA - Hopefully Nikki behaves and you don't get all soaked!!! That's not any fun, unless, of course you want to!! ;)
IBB - Have a good night at work!!!
JUST LIN - 59 days?!!? So happy for you. :P
ZONA - Gonna use your line.....RINSE WELL!!! :p
ReplyDeleteGreat topic Scirish~
ReplyDeleteUtah is....well...for lack of a better word....white! My mom would come to visit and ask where all the Mexicans were because she was getting creaped out! Coming from So Cal, we were not used to this. AND, the religion thing can be bothersome. At work, if a passenger asks what city I'm in....as soon as I say Utah, the very next question is, "Are you Mormon?" I try really hard not to say, "Hell no!" There are maps for all the church members of everyone's home and their phone number...the people who aren't Mormon, are also marked on the map as non-members. It freaked me out when I found that out! The kids tend to play with each other....my kids were very rarely included.
I don't think there is an accent here, but they do say the funniest things instead of cussing! "Oh my heck" and "Fur fun". At work, I get to talk to people from all over the world. I'm really good with accents and if I talk to them long enough, I tend to start talking like them......I have the best time with Texas and India....those I could do in my sleep! (not the people, the accents!)
Birdee....congrats on first...hope you get all your stuff done soon so you can play~
Jodi~ I still have your daughters msg on my phone....SHE TALKS FAST! And I love the way you sound.....makes me smile~
Zona~ i have to remember the "Don't stir up the Cleveland"! That would have been helpful to know earlier, my dear~ :)~
Tinka~ have fun at the movies~
Mojo~ congrats on the job....see if they will let you blog from work~ :)~
I just got off the phone with GOLDIE!!! She just wanted to say Hi to all you HOoters!!! She has not fallen off the face of the earth.......but still is having problems with her internet service at home. She also said she agrees with my assessment of how other people say WESconsin!!! Too funny!! Glad I'm not the only one!!
ReplyDeleteTINA!!!! I somehow knew you couldn't erase the message from Laquisha!!! LOL!!
ReplyDeleteITEACH & JENNIFER - Love the Illinois accent - makes me think of the SNL skits of "DA BEARS"!!!

ReplyDeleteOh, and that reminds me.....we're having a great Wisconsin spring/summer supper.......BRATS!!!!! I just got done putting them in a beer, onion, and green pepper bath!!! Ya gotta "pickle" them before ya turn and burn them.....don'tcha know!!! :P
ReplyDelete52!!!!
ReplyDelete53 :)
ReplyDeleteI actually have to work. Isn't it a bummer when that happens? Fortunately, I get to do this project from home so I will check on you all from time to time.
ReplyDelete55 :)
ReplyDeleteAmicus I also have the nasty habit of adding "r" to wash.
ReplyDeleteJodi- I will give you a ring a ding tonight.
JUST LIN - Have fun working.....although I'm glad you're not letting that get in the way of making an appearance here!!!
ReplyDeleteTINKA - We need a review of the movie - the Jake is dying to see it!!! Have fun with the grandkids :D
ReplyDeleteok, quick before JOEY sees it.....suppose to be Jake......not "the Jake"!!! You'd thought I was talking about John Wayne or something. LOL!!
ReplyDeleteITEACH~~...but I bet you don't say "nucular"! Nails on the chalkboard!!
ReplyDeleteMy South Dakota mom took forever to realize that we lived in EuGENE, not EUgene....and she always watched teleVISION instead of TELEvision. What's up with that? And, I don't think the word "doesn't" exists in So. Dakota. It's always, "He don't", "She don't".
Hey flying through real quick! Getting a headache!! I think I have been breathing to many bleach fumes!
ReplyDeleteTinka: I would email your seller today. If you do not get a response by Tuesday file with Paypal as an unreceived item. They will ask you if you have contacted the seller let them know yes and send copies of your emails. These are some of the many reasons why I am no longer on ebay.
Amicus: Say it ain't so! There is no r in wash!!! Repeat after me there is no r in wash. This is something that does drive me crazy!
Also specific has an S! I have a friend who says pacific (which is a freaking ocean) instead of specific. LOL
Jodi: I was pronouncing Wisconsin correctly but was refering to your town as Or-agun. Like we say here in PNW.
If any of you read my earlier blog post Puyallup is pronounced Pew al up. Not pewyallyoop! I can tell the new comers when they try to pronounce some of our fun city names.
Tina: I don't think I would do well in Utah. That is just creepy that they have maps with your names and all. Then to label Members or Non members is even creepier!
Ok gang I am going to take a nap!
JODI: Mr. Z just walked by ans said "Did Jodi change her picture? It's nice!" He also cooks Brats just like you do..I don't get involved in that..it has to be perfect.
ReplyDeleteTINA: I just got it!!! LOL!
HI DIANNE: Your new pics are great!
Waving to AMICUS!!
LYNND~~I was waiting for you to mention how Washingtonians have to remind folks that "there is no R in Wa(r)shington!"
ReplyDeleteHello owls and congrats to birdee for first!!
ReplyDeleteAll of you had such interesting things to say about this topic!
Thank you, scirish, for this great post. I think where we live does not make us who we are, but it does contribute to it in some ways. Where we live definitely does give us our accents. lol
Bon I have a girlfriend who goes absolutely ballistic whenever our prez says "nucular". LOL
ReplyDeleteTina I agree with LynnD. Are you sure you aren't living in The Twilight Zone.
I'm in a different part of Wisconsin than Jodi so it's "pop" around here.
ReplyDeleteHi gang !
Lynn: Sorry I wasn't here when you flew through quickly. I was busy warshing my hair, throwing a load of laundry in my warshing machine, and warshing my car. How's the weather in Warshington today? ;))~~
ReplyDeleteBTW, I'm having trouble pronouncing "flew through" too. Try saying that quickly 3 times. LOL!
Iteach: Thanks for confirming that I can blame it on my Midwest roots! ;)
Zona: Hi! Hope you enjoyed your Admiral's Feast. ;)
68
ReplyDelete69~ ahhhhhhhhhhhhh~
ReplyDeleteLynnD and J/L~ I know....it's creepy and so not right~ BUT....when I had the twins, they organized everyone together to make us dinners for a week! So it came in handy....I just don't know who got the ball rolling~ I'm used to it all now~
ReplyDeleteZona~ so glad you got it~
Jodi~ why are you cooking your children?
Good Late Afternoon all!
ReplyDeleteGee I'm gone for a couple days and all hell breaks loose at the "other" blogs. So without reading all the comments from the last few days here, is everyone all good? Everything is okey dokey here? I love ya all and I will talk to you tomorrow! I'm off to resize and post a few pics from this weekend on myspace.
Later!
Barb
TINA - No, not cooking the children, even tho they really have been brats today!!!
ReplyDeleteZONA - Thank that big hunk of man for me!!! :P
AMICUS - LOL @ warshing machine!!! I hope you do your warsh better than TINA does!!! Just remember to throw the clothes in, too......!!!!
Tina Good for you, getting 69 today. :)
ReplyDeleteTINA - 69......with a heavy sigh!!! Luv it!!
ReplyDelete75!!!!!
ReplyDelete76 trombones! LOL
ReplyDeleteI am home from the movies and we really enjoyed it. Even my 12 year old grandson liked it. Anything with Jim Carey's voice is good. Carol Burnette was too.
ReplyDeleteLynn - I will write the seller again after I have a little rest.
My friend Ron from Cincinnati would laugh at the way I said 'pasta' and 'dahlia'. In Canada and England 'pasta' is pronounced the same as 'past'. Ron said it was 'pawsta'. I say 'dahlia' with a long 'a' and he said it like 'dawlia'. Is that pronunciation all across the states or just Cincy? He would also laugh if I added 'eh' to my sentences. I didn't think I did that until he proved me wrong.
Tink Where I am, we say "pawsta" and "dawlia". I've heard alot of blacks from the South say "aks" instead of "ask". I don't understand that at all. I used to know a lady from the South and she wouldn't buy groceries or get groceries, she "made" groceries. I didn't get that one either. I wish I could fabricate my own groceries. I'd save alot of money. LOL
ReplyDeleteOkay, someone needs to take this pizza away from me, I think I just made myself sick. Was that TMI? Sorry.
ReplyDeleteWe say " pahhh sta". Well, that or noodles. lol
ReplyDeleteTink~~I must be a hybrid. For me, it's 'pawsta' but 'dallya' (like dilly-dally, which is what I'm doing while preparing dinner). Glad you had a good time at the movie.
ReplyDeleteHi guys!
ReplyDeleteI am at the laundry mat pooching wireless from the church next door! Ssshhhhh, dont tell!
WHABBY...I never thought of you as an affable buffoon! Not any kind of buffoon! But you are affable!
ZONA...OMG...that is too weird. Maybe we are related! Not to insult your parents, but I HATED Allentown. It was the longest year of my life! I would drive back to Cleveland whenever I had the chance! I did love being so close to Philly, NYC and Reading! Great outlet shopping in Reading!
Cleveland is NOT southern! But, if you go 2.5 hours south to Columbus they have a distinct southern accent. And an even greater one in Cincinatti. But we are Yankees!!!
Just Lin and Bon O - Thanks for the feedback. I have a feeling that it is 'pawsta' all over the states. It is interesting to me because that is the 'a' sound that is used in a lot of words in England. "Aunt" Marie for example rather than Ant Marie and yet 'pasta' is pronounced in England and in Canada like the 'a' in 'past'. I wonder why?
ReplyDeleteI find it fascinating as Ron and I used to argue over pronunciation of words. I could never convince him that neither were wrong just different. He felt anything that was pronounced differently than they did in Ohio was incorrect. I wonder if he is looking down from Heaven and still arguing with me. Maybe St. Peter set him straight.
Maureen - I thought the accent in Cincinnati was Southern too. The Baptist church we attended while we were there sure seemed like a Southern Baptist church to me. That was another source of argument for us. Ron said they were Mid Westeners. No wonder we only saw each other 4 times a year.
ReplyDeleteAs a child, I had a friend whose entire family said "chimley" instead of "chimney". We always thought it was just ignorance of the actual word. The TOTD sent me Googling. Who knew? Apparently it is commonly used, especially in the UK.
ReplyDeletechimley \'chim-lee\ n - Also: chimbley; Chimney; a household structure designed to carry away smoke from kitchen stoves, wood stoves, fire places, or furnaces; "Jeez, it got so windy last night we thought the chimley was gunnoo come down."
Next question....gunnoo?
Tink Well, Ohio borders Kentucky and West Virginia and I believe these were considered part of the Confederacy even though they never officially seceded.

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that I can't keep up with all of the comments. I always miss things. I need reading glasses:(
Skirish
I am not sure if your pain is disc related. I suffer from disc pain and can't lift much. I see a Chirpopracter and massage therapist who help me. I just talked to a hypnotist who manages pain through hypnosis. She says she has had a good success rate. There is also a DXR9000 machine for disc pain. I also have had the nerves deadened at my lower neck where the pain comes from. Maybe something I have mentioned might be of any use to you.
TINA...tell Mr. Tina I hope he feels better soon
ReplyDeleteI am going to call it a night little owls. Don't stay up too late. Birdee - I hope to see you posting first again in the morning. I am so happy you are feeling better.
ReplyDeleteGood Night Zona and Vig - I guess you will write me after I am asleep.
Scirish - I hope you feel really well soon. I am sending positive energy your way.
Dreama...I have already tried most of what you suggested, but I am curious about the hypnotist, how do you pick one with qualifications? Is there a board or something? I know my ins. will not cover such a thing, but I would like to try if I felt that the person consulted had some sort of success rate. Any insight would be helpful...
ReplyDeleteSCIRISH...I don't know what happened, but I finally got relief when I started going to a pain management specialist. He worked wonders. If you would like to exhange mails, I would give you my email addy. OR do you have a myspace page? If you do, snag me off of someone elses and we can message. Look for moweenie and the avatar is a pig spinning in an office chair!
