Yep, That's Me, Controlling!

i know this about me, it stares
me in the face daily, i have control
issues, the thing that worries me
is when i am in the moment i don't
see it, till after the issue is done
i then sit back and ponder why the
heck did i need to control that situation

and yes, at times i make a huge problem
for others and they don't want to tell
me that i am a total control freak, so instead
they back away

several yrs ago my younger cousin was
getting married, she ask me to be a bridesmaid
in her wedding, we are 18yrs apart and i asked
her if she was sure she wanted me by her
side, she then said "my wedding without
you would not be complete" so i accepted her
offer, as i know she loves me

when she was picking out the dresses i was
all over her, telling her the color, what type of gown
etc. she appeased me and let me chatter on

as several days went by and i did not hear from her
i called her sister, and without hesitation her sister
told me to back off, and she was right,
i was thankful she allowed me to see one
of my biggest faults

my cousin and i had a good chat about it
and all was fine, she got married and i wore
exactly what she picked out

this incident always resurfaces in my
memory, whenever i find myself controlling a issue

i used to hope this incident taught me a lesson
however it does not seem it did, as i
still have this huge fault and just can't
seem to get past it

can it just me part of my personality or
part of my being? would i not be me if i was
not controlling?

something to think about, which i will
all day~~

  2. CPGEM: As everyone knows, I worry. I always think that someday I'll be able to just stop this...well let's face facts...I won't ever stop worrying. It's just me. I don't know if I learned it from my mom, or it's just something I was born to do..but I know one thing..I am damn good at it! ;)

  3. Good morning!

And goodnight Zona! Yay for being first!

I'm so opposite of you Carol! I am not a leader or controller, I am happy to let someone else have the headache or worry of what to do, or to make a decision.

I have no problem giving suggestions or ideas, but no way am I comfortable being in charge.

I will check back later! Have a great day!

  4. I'm a teacher what does that tell you!

My mother is the master controller of them all, so I think I got it naturally.

I try really hard not to pass that to my children.

  5. Good monring Zona- congrats on 1st!
    Morning EBJ and iteach.

Is being bossy the same thing as controlling? I think I can be bossy, but I don't think I am controlling. I do like to get my point across though. I will have think about this one more....

  9. I just called my husband during my break and he said I'm controlling at home.

At school my second grade team consists of women who are way more controlling then me. I just sit back and do whatever they tell me to do.

  10. Good Morning Cyber Daughter. I am so proud of you for being first today. Now get to bed quickly or I will come down there.

Good Morning East Bay J - I loved your blog yesterday. When I started to think of my lost
"babies" I couldn't write about them. It must have been my melancholy mood because I couldn't read the sad ones either. I will go back this weekend and read them all. It was a great blog you wrote and I have worried about little Paula.

Good Morning Iteach and Goldie - I hope you both have a good day today.

  14. Great Blog Carol - Somehow I see you more as a leader than a control freak. You always seem to listen to everyone's suggestions. We have three issues here - being a control freak, bossy or a leader. I am sure there are some differences here. I just don't feel smart enough this morning to differentiate between them.
I was married for 25 years to a control freak. I didn't realize that until the marriage was over but I had no say in any decision making whether it be how to spend the family money or how to decorate the home. I never even thought of objecting to it. When I finally wanted more of a say the marriage dissolved. I am sure that wasn't the whole reason but it was part of it. I was the youngest in the family and it seems like I was told what to do all my life. Does placement in the family play a role in whether one is controlling? Does the oldest always lead? That is another thing I wonder about. Anyway I now control my 'fur babies'. Come to think of it they determine when I get up in the morning so maybe I don't. Maybe I will be a follower forever.

  16. Good Morning Everyone:

    Congrats Zona on #1

What a good Topic to discuss, I was and maybe still am controlling, Like Tinka said, I was the oldest, so I bossed my little sister around and told her what to do all the time, and she listened until she caught on to it.
LOL I told her what her chores will be when we came home from school, I told her how to wear her hair. I hate even to admit this, but when we were watching tv afterschool I always told her, go get me my school work, go get me a glass of pop, and I even told her to go get me kleenex, LOL, she listened but like I said see caught on and got smart. But I LOVE my sister and I don't know what I would do without her. Shes always there for me and I'm there for her.

As far as marriage goes, there is no controlling, we sit down and discuss things together. Same with the kids we sit down and discuss with them also, together as a family.

My mom is controlling, always has been, she named 2 of my kids, I let her, my grandmother named me and my sister. My husband is easy going he didn't care.

What was a real big problem was when we were planning our wedding 22 years ago OMG. My mom is controlling well my Mother-in-law is WORSE. I had 2 wedding showers, because they were both control freaks. But I only had 1 wedding. My mother controlled it, LOL and she sort of told my mother in law that too. It was very stressful looking back now. I just went with the flow I was only 19. But my mother has mellowed some what, but not my mother in law, shes still controlling. But I don't take her crap no more, I tell her like it is. But we get along very well now and have a very good relationship. I can honestly say I love my mother in law. Ok Sorry about the long post. I just had a lot to say on the subject.

Hello to Everyone, Have a Good Day, I will check back later.

  17. Good Morning Owls!

Cpgem: There are a lot of things about my personality I often wish I could change, but some of the traits that have caused me problems in personal relationships are also the same traits that have made me successful in my careers. I'm guessing the same is true of you.

Years ago, I was engaged, and we were going through the marriage counseling process, which included a personality test. As the pastor was reading our test results, I guess he sensed I was feeling disappointed and hurt, because so many of mine sounded negative. He shared the fact that he has the same personality type, and he said, "We can be difficult to deal with at times, but when a job needs done, others know they can count on us to get it done."

The timing of this topic is perfect, because I few days ago, I decided I wasn't happy with my personality statement on MySpace so I searched the Internet for help with a more accurate description. I came across the Myers-Briggs personality test and was amazed by the accuracy of its assessment. I'm an ISTJ.

Has anyone else taken this test, and if so, what's your personality type?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Good Morning Renee - I think all older siblings are 'the boss'. I really think one's placement in the family has a big role in determining one's personality. There have been a lot of books written on that topic. I also think your wedding situation is typical. Either the mother or the mother in law feels like she should control the whole affair. I have seen some very tired brides by the time the wedding occurs.

Zona - I am a worrier like you. Do you find that you let others make decisions because you worry about whether you made the right one? I know I do. That is part of the reason why I am a follower.

  19. Happy Wednesday!!

    Good Morning..

Zona - congrats on number ONE!!

I'm off to read - heading looks like we'll be talking about ME today!! LOL...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Amicus, When my husband and I were getting married we had to go thru 6 weeks of marriage classes and also meet with the priest and take all them tests also. But I guess we passed. Unless we were so young we didn't know how to take the test. We were put in seperate rooms too. Then we went over them together with this lady who did all the marriage testing.

I never took that personality test, but it sounds interesting, I'll have to look into it. Email me the info on myspace. If theres one for kids I would like my boys to take it. Because my OLDEST one is controlling, but middle one just goes with the flow, but my younger one seems controlling too, LOL, I think because hes the baby. I tend to give into him more.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm also the older one in my family.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Zona Good job being number one. Now go to bed!

cpgem8 Very interesting topic today. Thank you.

In Jr. High I was the only majorette for our city band. In high school I was a flag twirler and they made me head flag twirler. As an adult, I worked for a small county-wide non-profit organization and worked my way up to being the director. When I decided I wanted less responisibility, I became a receptionist at a large veterinary hospital. They made me head receptionist. So I tend to end up in leadership roles but I would be very happy to be second in command. It's certainly a safer position. In some things I am controlling because, of course I know the "right" way to do things. LOL I am also the oldest in my family but I only have one younger brother.

I think a good leader has to be bossy and controlling but has to temper that with also being fair and open-minded. I'm going to see if I can find that personality test and take it. It sounds interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  23. cpgem - great blog!!

I have to second what IBB said - it's more like I'm a perfectionist!! that's it - that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!

I need to get moving - I was on a roll yesterday with getting things ready for company and Mr. MEK came home early so we could go replace his cellphone that he lost (that was not cheap!!) - anyway - i lost my momentum - need to find it again!!

I hope everyone has an excellent day!! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  24. AmicussHo I took the test and I am ISFJ. I even took it a second time, decided to change a few answers and still came out the same way! :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. JustLin, Send me the info where to take the test PLEASE

    ReplyDelete
  26. Renee
I sent you a message on Myspace. It kept giving me an error. I think it finally went through when I did it differently.
    TOTD
I am not controling. I may be opinionated at times but that's because I see the broader scope of things when others don't, can't, won't. I research things when ever I am in doubt. I do not like controling people to play a part in my every day life. My best friends and cousins know my motto and they joke with me about it all the time. If I feel pressured to do, act, feel in a way that isn't me then that upsets me and out comes the sentence "You are not the boss over me or my thoughts." The last time these words were said were because my cousin would not lighten up with his views on politcs and he was being stubborn about it.

    ReplyDelete

  32. Hi All!

Much Like JustLin, I've always found myself ending up quickly in leadership positions, whether it be Class President, Project Leader, Senior VP, Division Manager, etc.~~and hating it. Every personality test I've ever taken throughout my careers has placed me in the middle of the spectrum. I like it there. I much prefer being a facilitator and peacekeeper than a leader. I learned early on in the corporate world that, unless you are THE top dog, you have little control to make things happen for your personnel. I learned early on as a parent that control by any means other than setting an example is an exercise in futility.

Perhaps it comes from growing up as an only child of a benevolent dictator and a perfectionist/chronic worrier? And, strange as it may seem, I've found (and many studies have proven) that more is expected of tall people. You can't just 'blend into the background'. You either assume the mantle of leadership or become the bumpkin in the back of the group photo. :o) There's no middle ground. I'm all about results, teamwork, shared goals. Never gave a rat's ass about who gets credit. Hated being allowed only to oversee the big picture without rolling up my sleeves and being a 'DoBee'. Never much cared about being the head honcho, titles, awards. Just wanted to have some fun while getting the mission accomplished. The only things I ever wish I could 'control' are the anemic egos of those who are so incredibly transparent in their need to be in control!

What I really NEED to control is my own time today, so wishing all a good day........bbl to read. Thanks, Carol!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks for the blog today Carol!

    Congrats on 1st Zona!

Well you are anything but controling here Carol. You let us talk about whatever we want, and you welcome all. I don't think that is controling at all!

I will busy again today, so talk to you all later!

    Have a great day!

  34. To those interested in the personality test...

The official Myers-Briggs personality profile costs around $50, depending on what website you use.

There are several websites that offer free tests that are supposed to be similar, but you'll probably have to skip through a bunch of advertisements before you'll get to see your results.

    Here's the website I used:
    Personality Home Page

They charge $5 for a 60 question test that will give you your Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. There are no annoying advertisements.

If you don't want to pay to take the test, here's the page that thoroughly explains each personality type:
    Personality Profiles Page

Renee: They don't charge for the kid's questionnaire. Here's that page:

  35. Great blog Carol. Will banter later in the day.

But AmicussHo I did your test and I am a INFJ.

    I see that you are the inspector! That is fitting as you we're the one that did all the detective work a while back, and my intuition told me as well, I just wasn't ablt to prove it like you. 8}

  37. Hi Everyone!

Vig I'm sorry I didn't comment on your blog. It was very good. Weight has always been a very sensitive issue for me. I came into the world at 10+ pounds and have ballooned to over 400 (I think). I did loose 121 lbs (weighed 170) at one time but gained that and a lot more back. I don't have the motivation or will power to do it again.

Ebj your blog was good too. I just never had any pets so I don't have any stories to tell on the subject. It's quite clear how much you all love your pets.

Cpgem8 I would not say I am a controlling person. If I were I would have taken better control of my life and made much better decisions for myself. I am content to let someone else call the shots.

Have a good day everyone. (((HUGS))) to you all. See ya tomorrow.

  38. Turtle,

    Carol~ Mr. Tina~ tells me all the time that I'm a control freak~ I'm the oldest....I know better! he-he~

  41. Late Morning Glories!

Zona was first way to go!!

Ok first off I went to take the personality test and all I found out was I am some sort of guardian. LOL I am too cheap to pay the $5 dollars and too stupid to find the free one! LOL So I am not sure what that says!

Also I think the test would be skewed if I took it when I was really PMSing!

Carol: I am controlling in most things that I have to do like laundry or chores I have or others assign for me. I want it done my way. I also if given a list of things to do my brain jumps to how to organize it so that it is sensible to me. I very much love the motto work smarter not harder.

In every job I have ever had I am moved to management quickly. That being said I am a great deal like Bono. I don't mind being middle management and dealing with people in a fair and humanitarian way.

I have never wanted to be or respected bosses who only see the black and white and don't take into consideration that people are not just numbers but people. Hope that makes sense.

So I can be controlling on some issues but for the most part I think I am very laid back.

Really I guess that says I am a split personality! LMAO

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Wednesday! I just got home and I am exhausted. Will check back later!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Tina:

Did you take the 60 question test that costs $5? It's more thorough than the free ones I've seen. Or you could use the personality profiles page to just pick the type that best describes you. There are a couple of things I don't completely agree with on mine, but overall, it's pretty darn accurate. :)

I'm a worry wart(like Zona-hehe) and feel if I control or give my input into a situation, all will be okay!
Is there a cure for this?lmao

I wouldn't conisder myself bossy by no means..I'm rather passive, but a lot of situations arise with family, friends, work, etc. that I feel I MUST make it go my way! lol

  56. TINA: I'm afraid..what do you want to talk about?? ;)

TINKA: I think that's exactly what I do, I lack the confidence to believe that any decision I make in my personal life could possibly be the right one. Isn't it funny that every job I had, I was in management and did very well. They did have to kinda push me to take the promotions though, never thought I'd be able to tell people what to do. Come to think of it, I don't think I ever did tell them, just kinda 'guided' them in the right direction. I never wanted anyone to get mad at me!! LOL!

AMICUS: I couldn't get into that web-site. I keep getting an error message. I would love to see what the test says...I think. ;)

    J/LIN: Can I get up now? :)

  62. Good afternoon all! Today was a busy day (darn) and I won't have anymore "breaks" at work starting tomorrow! : (

ANYway....I do believe there is a distinction between bossy and controlling (but that they can also go hand and hand). I don't believe I am controlling, however, I can be bossy! (In fact, I have a friend who calls me "miss bossy boss" from time to time...esp. to let me know I am on my pedestal)!

Tink: I think I too was in a controlling relationship (but didn't realize until he left how much "freedom" I have now)!

I do think I have good leadership qualities, but I can also step back and let others take control (and have no problem being in the background)!

My ex. called me "high maintenance" but I think it's just because I have standards! LOL!

Off to my best friend's house for dinner and drinks (I may have to make my drink a "double" from the day I've had)! Right, iteach?!

    Check in later...

Hello to all! Zona way to go on being #1!

  63. What an interesting blog today to see what each owl feels his/her personality really is.

Zona - If you had manager's jobs then you are more of a leader than you give yourself credit for. I have never wanted to be the leader. I don't even like to choose the restaurant where a large group is heading. I don't like the stress of feeling responsible for every one's happiness at the restaurant.
I am getting ready for a computer meeting. I will check back tonight.

Jennifer - I think we are much better being independent than being under the 'thumb' of a control freak.

  67. Just Lin,
If you click on the link to the kid's questionnaire, you'll see what I meant by more thorough. The adult questionnaire is even more specific and doesn't have the "don't know" choice. Since the questions and answers are more detailed, it might provide a more accurate result. It did for me.

Also, the humanmetrics.com personality descriptions seemed more complicated to me. I could relate more to the description I read on personalitypage.com. But, that might not be true for everyone either.

Zona: I've had problems with that website today too. I haven't gotten any error messages, but at times, the pages were loading very slowly.

You were NOT trying to control it...you were aware of what colors and styles suited you best and you just wanted to be sure that your dear cousin had the most beautiful wedding! Hmmm, maybe that IS a contro issue!! LOL! But I think it was just an issue of loving her and wanting everything to be perfect for her...out of love more then the need to control. How was that?? LOL

  91. Okay, this is a more Custardly yellow but I'm thinking "tedious" should probably be obnoxious yellow. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Oops! I forgot to change it! What an idiot! LMAO

    ReplyDelete
  93. Okay, here it is for real this time. Should it be more obnoxious?

    ReplyDelete
  94. This whole little sequence of mine is pretty tedious, isn't it? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  95. Just look at that custard glow!!!

Hedinist? Did you say hedinist or tedious?? hmmm......

    ReplyDelete
  96. Okay, after much soul searching, I've decided "tedious" should be obnoxious yellow. That was an interesting little exercise I had with myself. Tedious as hell.

  97. Hello everyon
We got back from the Casino late last night. It did me a world of good to get away. I lost a little. but Mr Mary won $1,000. He was nice enough to share!

On todays totd. I think BonO and I must be twins. I could have written that. I am perfectly happy to take direction. I am the middle child. Always the peacemaker. I do have a back bone when needed LOL! This pussy cat can show her claws re-owoo. he hee!

Today I received an envelope full of thank-yous from iteaches class. Mr Mary and I had a ball reading them! The 2nd graders were quite creative. One of the books I sent them was a shoe cobbler story. My Father was not only a preacher, but a shoe cobbler as well. I sent the class a picture of him in his shoe shop. I would say more about him, but I am saving it for a future blog to send to Carol. I posted a few of the thank-yous on myspace. I know you will love them like I did!

I like your yellow tedious avatar!

I hated the dress I wore at my cousins wedding, I was mortified. I think you are right I wanted her to pick what I would look best in. So I was trying to control the situation for my own needs.

    mary
That was so nice of iteach's class to send you thank you's. I have been very laxed on getting something for the kids. It is on my 2do list for this weekend tho.

    goldie
Good point on being bossy, I don't think I am bossy, however maybe ppl in my office might tell me otherwise. I guess what I think the most about me, is just trying to control a situation instead of taking a back seat and having another control it.

  102. I am starting to get nervous about my new computer as its equipped with Vista. I have read some reviews on the internet, and they are not good.

I had no idea as I did not do any research on Vista. I did call hp tonite and I was told I cannot get XP on a new computer. I do have 21days from receiving the computer to send it back with a full refund.

So I guess I will have to wait and see.

I have decided not to read anymore reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Oh I forgot to tell you guys about the "owls" in my dream! I remember looking through some desktop calendar in the dream...It had a page with an OWL on it! LOL

I ripped it out to save it, and it turned into a "blue fabric owl"! LMAO

Weird I know, but see, now y'all are in my dreams! Maybe this is a sign of some craft/card MEK is going to make! lol

I dream about this blog all the time, kinda strange, but nice all the same.

    ReplyDelete
  106. My hottie and I last night were just discussing this! He's a student here at TECH(and frat boy-haha) and VISTA sucks! The ONLY thing I like about it is the "snipping tool" which I can snip anything from a page! LOVE IT!

Other than that, it crashes and just plain has major issues!:(:(

I miss my XP! IT was the one I was most familiar with..I hope you can deal with it Carol..Not trying to make you feel worse, just letting you know my experience with it..Jeff hates it too..He and I discussed yesterday how sometimes you do "proper shutdowns" and it will NOT shut down so you either have to look at the blue swirling circle forever, lol, or just turn it off!:(

    ReplyDelete
  107. Miley is lip singing?

    Whats up with that~~

    ReplyDelete
  108. OHH Carol! fun!
and yes, Mr. Joey(aka Honey) is still around but hasn't called in 9 days!:(:(:(
Oh well..I have to get over it somehow..I know for a FACT he has no minutes on his cellie, but there are other ways! payphone! boss' phone! can/string phone! LMAO
    sheesh!

    ReplyDelete
  109. LMAO@Carol..I was watching the same thing! She did that 'cause she sounds awful live! HAHA

SO true..I actually love that little catchy song.not her so much..but I saw a youtube clip of her performing at disney and she sounded HORRIBLE!! lol

    ReplyDelete
  110. joey
Only you would say "cellie" lol...

    ReplyDelete
  111. joey
I agree I don't think she sings very well. I did not think Britney sang well either. Its all what these Record Companies make them...

Also...You have been thru a lot more than this, It does hurt, however you will find a way to get thru it. And he still might call...

    ReplyDelete
  112. carol:

I know of a friend that was able to remove vista and install his old xp. Maybe that is worth looking into?

And for the record. I dispise vista, I am still learning how to navigate and find shit... lol

And that lil round revolving thing.... I just wanna snib it off the screen.

    ReplyDelete
  113. turtle
I think I am going to call Dell tonite and see if they have computers with XP...

And that lil round revolving thingy, maybe its like the "circle of life" never ending...

I am getting so nervous, I have to go the bathroom.

    brb...I hope :O)

  114. Hi...anyone up for some ice cream? I thought I would bring a few gallons in with some toppings, cherries and nuts. We haven't had snacks for awhile and I do want to "control" what we eat..I guess I will bring some sugar free and fat free ice cream too, but just a small one!

I don't feel like I am a control person but I think some would say others...like my younger brother but not friends. I can certainly make a decision but I am pretty easy going also. Oh yea, my husband might disagree too. My first marriage was very controlled like living with parents when you are a teenager so I think I did a full circle when I came out of that marriage.

Lots of marches today!! I got my butt up early to go and take care of my granddaughters (out of school) and then did a lot of errands the rest of the day so I feel acomplished today!

Another great blog as there is everyday!

Joey - I don't see a card like that in my craft making future - sorry!! LOL

This HOMEK is going to go watch and pay attention - I think Goldie is right - might have to get out the kleenex..

Hope you all had a great day - I'll be back later!!!

  133. Oh that's kewl amicus! Thanks because I didn't know it was 9pm! HAHA

OH, and I am impressed that you know how to rename links!!:)

    ReplyDelete
  134. Joey: I agree that Miley sounds awful! I agree that a recording studio can make ANYONE sound great! I think that is why "live" is what distinguishes true talent! (Did you notice how awesome Daughtry sounded with just their acoustic guitars?!

I don't usually watch IDOL, but my best friend does and I was at her house. PLUS, her sister (who is with the Dream Foundation) was on stage with Maria Schriver(sp?) as well as her neice and nephew. We sat through the entire thing and did not see them, but heard they were at the VERY BEGINNING!!! DARN!!! We missed them!

    I am VERY opinionated about music....so I will stop here! ; )

    SOOOO.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Lol, Jennifer at having to end it at an even number. You made me laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  140. That means Jennifer can never end it with a 69. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  141. Yeah..but she can do it twice and call it a 138!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  142. Joey,
Thanks! I use renamed links on my MS page, but I didn't know they could be used here until I saw you doing it. :)

    ReplyDelete
