Inlaws and Outlaws!

by Lynn D

I was laying in bed and channel surfing looking for something to watch on TV not finding anything I went to my old standby our local PBS and I happened on a documentary that was not only eye opening but made me want to rave about it and let everyone I know that it is a must see!

It is a glorious film about marriage and relationships from every walk of life. The creator of this film is from Seattle and the entire thing is filmed in Seattle with real couples. Many in the gay and lesbian community may already be aware of this little jewel of a film but I think many in the mainstream are not.

This film for me really made me think about relationships and what marriage really is, not the standard between man and woman but person to person. The story of Chuck in this film made me realize that really marriage is about choosing your family. The family for the next stage of your life, when you choose who to partner with, to create your family separate from the family you were born into. This insight hit me with such clarity and added a whole new dimension about why every person should be allowed the right to marry. Chuck and his partner were together for 50 years and when his partner died he was told he could not have his service flag for the funeral because he was not family. Well if 50 years together counts for nothing then what the hell is family??

If you get a chance to see this film don’t walk run and take everyone you can! Right now it is playing in small theaters here and there. I was lucky enough to see it on PBS. I don’t know if they will be playing it again but please check your listings. If it is watch! You will walk away feeling much richer for the experience!

I am including two youtube videos about this film. Just to give you a hint of its power.

  4. Good Morning Everyone..was fighting a flu bug yesterday.

LYNND: I have always believed love is love...and that's all that's important in the end. I haven't seen this movie, but will look for it. I just checked our PBS station's listings and didn't see it mentioned yet. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

BIRDEE: Congrats on ONE through FIVE mighty Chicken Owl!!

    J/LIN: "You're a beauty..one in a million girl..." great picture. I'm just sorry I didn't get to guess.

  5. Morning Glories!

    Birdee got first! Yahoo!

I hope that this blog wets everyones Appetite to see this film!

I did forget to mention that the music throughout the film is fantastic!

Also Bob Lemon who speaks at the end of the second clip is a fantastic person who you can also look up on you tube under Bob Lemon. His story about how he has become a producer and distributor of this film is just as compelling.

Enjoy! Since I have seen the documentary every time I watch these clips I get teary eyed.

PS I did a search on Amazon and they carry the DVD and you might check your local library.

Maybe I will buy it so I can mail it out to you guys to watch and mail to the next person. If you are interested let me know and I will purchase it.

  6. Zona: I have always believed love is love too. I have always believed that straight or gay you should be able to get married. This film just brought into focus in a caring and gentle way why we all should fight harder to make sure everyone has that right.

  7. LynnD, Thanks for sharing this!

You know...just watching these Lovely people talking About the movie...brought tears to my eyes!

I hope all State's will make it possible for gay/lesbian's to get married. I've alway's believed thing's should be Equal!

  10. Good morning!

    Congrats Birdee! Yay, first!

    Hi Zona!

I have to watch the video clips once my caffeine kicks in and I can focus.

I never met my ex-husbands parents, they died way before we met.

Current husband has a great mom, we get along wonderfully. She lives in Sacramento, so not too far away.

We are trying to get her to move closer to us and she is considering it.

Huz's dad passed away a month after we started dating, so I never had the chance to meet him.

Our 3rd or 4th date was to his dads funeral service at Golden Gate cemetary. I didn't want him to go alone as it was a very small service. It was very touching and special.

The video sounds really good Lynn and I would love to see it. I will check our listings to see if it will be on tv.

I agree, love is love, no matter who it's between. I am so glad that this state has recognized that, and allow people to marry.

    ReplyDelete
  11. EBJ: Oh how I understand the need for caffeine!! Good morning to you!

  12. Carol: It is fine. I was surprised when I got up this morning and checked the blog and it was up. There were zero comments, but I could not bring myself to comment first! LOL That just seemed a little arrogant to me. Ha ha I got first on my own blog! LMAO

So I waited until Birdee logged in.

Ok I am sucking down my coffee like the true junky I am. LOL

  13. Birdee:

  15. Good Morning Birdee - Congratulations on being one through five. I am sorry I was not there to keep you company. I know how lonely it can get in the nest early in the morning.

Good Morning Zonababy - I am glad you are feeling better today. I was getting ready to send my physician in my private plane. (Boy do I ever live in a fantasy world).

Good Morning Lynn - I just loved your blog and your videos. I will comment more later.

Good Morning Carol and East Bay J - Hope you two are well today.

It took me an hour to warm up after I got home from my granddaughter's baseball game. It was so cold there. It went into overtime and Traci's team lost by one run. They are out of the playoffs now and I can't say I am sorry.
I have another busy day today. My friend Brian and my brother in law and I are taking Marie to lunch and then a tour of the city sights. After a short rest I will be off to my computer meeting. I can't miss this one because I am presenting one of my DVD's. I am running a little short of energy.
I will try and get back after my rest this afternoon and comment on the blog and see who the Beauty of the Day is. In case I don't see the picture in time I will guess Joey.

    Have a great day everyone.

  17. Lynn truly wonderful!

I seriously doubt that my close minded small town will have this at the library.

However, I will definetly keep my eyes open on PBS.

Thank heavens for PBS, I've always liked that channel.

  18. Oh, I'm not good at guessing the pictures.

It's Shirley! And she looks exactly the same with that adorable smile!!!!
    **waving frantically at shirley**

  24. Lynn....I will have to keep a look-out for that movie. I said a few days ago that one of my friends from high school is finally going to be allowed to get married. That sounds so wrong. "allowed to get married" She's a freakin adult who is capapble of making her own decisions. It just blows my mind that there are still people out there in positions of power who are still so close-minded. But hopefully this will be a turn for the better.
    All we need is love.....

  25. Good morning/afternoon everyone (even though I woke up with a sore neck which is becoming a pain in the ass)!

    Congrats on 1st Birdee!

Isn't it the right of every single person on this planet to have love in their lives? Who could deny people that? Yet there are a lot of close minded people that do. I hope this documentary wakes some people up. Good job Lynn D. Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Lynn - great blog today!!

Shirley - you are just adorable in your senior picture - thanks for sharing!!

I was violently ill in the middle of the night - think the cilantro in the salsa got me from the scary lunch yesterday!! SO - I'm not feeling very well........ I'm going to take it easy today..

so - I'll be back later...
    hugs to all..

  27. When we're free to love anyone we choose,
When this world's big enough for all different views,
When we all can worship from our own kind of pew,
    Then we shall be free!

That's the song that popped into my head this morning as I read the blog and comments. :)

Lynn: Thanks for sharing the documentary with us!

I agree with Zona - our lovely Owl today is sweet Shirley!

    MEK: Feel better {{Hugs}}.

    Good day wishes for everyone!

  30. Good Morning Owls!

    Birdee~ Congrats on being first!
MEK~ Feel better soon. I have been sick this week with a cold and it just isn't fun to be sick--ever!

I am lucky enough to have a gem of a man, even though his parents are not quite the best inlaws. They could be worse, but my goodness we have had some times over the past 15 years. I think since I am Berry's second wife they were afraid to like me at first. You would think that after 15 years and 3 children they would try to be a little friendlier though. Berry says it could have something to do with the fact that I am taller than both of them, and it really intimidates his dad. Well, excuse me for not being short!

Today is the last day of school. My daughter cries every year on the last day....sobbs! She just doesn't get what the celebration is all about. Can you tell she is not in high school yet? HA!

    ReplyDelete
  31. A quick note. I just had an hour and a half nap and I feel better than I did when I woke up. We are leaving for Lunch in just a little over an hour.

I hope you know I was joking when I guessed Joey. I hadn't seen the picture yet. I will go with the others and say it is my friend Shirley. Lovely picture Shirley.

    Be back late this afternoon.

  32. PS...

I started posting on the RossBlog last June so I've been chatting with some of you for a year now, but I've rarely shared my real name. I think it's about time! :) Jersey Boys are singing it on my MS page. I still prefer to use Amicus here and in other public forums though. :)

    I think it's Lovely Shirley!!!!

Amicus, That sound's like a beautiful song. What is the title?

Tink, glad you feel better after your nap! xo

I just did my walk and added about 10 more mins to it. It's so nice to be outside!

Ok, off for some lunch and fresh fruit!!!! yummmmmmm!!!!

  34. Great blog Lynn D. I have both friends and relatives who are gay. Yes, they no longer live in the area (as Iteach put it...this is a very close minded and may I add uneducated community)!

I have always been for gay marriage too. If someone is lucky enough to find their soul-mate, they they should also be allowed to marry them!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I also agree that they very pretty senior picture is Shirley too!

  37. Hi Lynn --

Thanks for the great post about my movie. (Google alerts me when people write about it -- which is almost always nice to read.)

I really appreciate you spreading the word. Just to let you and your friends know, the film is being self-distributed. So you can buy it through my website or host a screening in your community (for pretty darn cheap) or work with me to get it into your local theatre.

Go to www.inlawsandoutlawsfilm.com for all the details.

If you live in the Seattle area, it's playing Sunday and Monday at Central Cinema. GREAT movie house where they served food and drinks at your seat -- and it's just $5. I'll be at all three shows. Check it out on my website.

Cheers -- thank you everybody for the very affirming comments about love! We need more of that, don't you think?

    Drew Emery

    ReplyDelete
  38. WOW! Drew....welcome and thanks for coming to our little nest! I will for sure check out your website for more details about your movie!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Amicus (Sherry??? LOL!) I SO AGREE with what you posted! That's just so IT, in a nutshell!

These gay marriage rights, these rights to employment without fear of getting fired, these rights to adopt children, these rights to immigrate and get citizenship, are all HUMAN rights.

Our struggle is part and parcel of the broader struggle for blacks, women, EVERYBODY to be treated equally. Period.

Lynn D and all: Have you seen the older PBS show "If these walls could talk"? OMG! One of the segments features the amazing Vanessa Redgrave as the long-time live-in partner (i.e., spouse) of a women who dies in the 1950s, and then endures the dead woman's family very matter-of-factly taking all the possessions and kicking Vanessa out of the house.

The piece is just heart-breaking, not to mention full of the most exquisite ironies. The family of the woman who died aren't even evil... they're just reacting the way any family would back then to the presence of someone who was perceived to be simply an eccentric "friend" of the family member who died, as opposed to her spouse.

"Spouse"?? In the 1950's? What an absurd notion!

    Powerful stuff, owls!

Great blog. I have not seen the documentary film.
I feel that everyone should be able to be married Gay or straight. In High School my best friend Ron was Gay so for many years I have understood many things about life with an open mind.
    Birdie
Congrats on #1, #2, #3, #4, & #5. I have always loved birds but you are by far the funniest of them all also. :0)

I always wondered what your real name is. I talk about you sometimes here at home and I refer to you as the grooming lady. We both have a love and compassion for furbabies so you have stories that always stick in my head and I talk about them.
David used to be confused and he'd ask if I was speaking of an old school friend or a long lost cousin. Now he doesn't ask. He knows if I bring up certain names then those are my internet friends.

JODI can't hardly hear his alarm, let alone a ringing phone!!!).....and guess who was calling me?!!? Our very own MARY/MI.....calling from Gay Paree!!!! She just wanted to say HI......she is having a fabulous time on her trip!!! She really enjoyed seeing the Colesium and Vatican City......she said that TINA'S pics are beautiful....but so much more breathtaking in person!!! A friend of her niece's is joining them and has her own laptop with her, so Mary is hoping to be able to logon here sometime soon!!! She just wanted me to post this for her til she got a chance.

  55. Good Day Owls~~ And what a gorgeous day it is! With so much tragic 'Water, Water, Everywhere', I feel almost guilty enjoying the calm beauty of a late spring day in the PNW. Popping indoors for only a moment too late in the day for individual shout-outs, so "Howdy to All!!"

LynnD~~WONDERFUL BLOG! Being part of the 1 in every 2 'hetero' marriages ending in divorce, my mind is forever boggled at those who can look at the life-long healthy gay partner relationships and talk of how they threaten the "sanctity of marriage"...WTC??

Shirley~~You must be fibbing to us about your age...that beautiful face hasn't changed one bit!

Drew~~What a treat to have a welcome visitor to our nest today! Wish you all good things with your film. I'm forwarding your link to the Bijou here in (oh, so liberal) Eugene. I'd think they (if not already on board) would be a very welcoming venue.

Back out into the sunshine. Off to do my part to reduce 'food miles' by stocking up on berries and veggies from Thistledown Farms. See ya tonight!

  56. Whabby: My mom always taught me to be on my best behavior when there's a guest in the house so I'm postponing your flogging until later tonight. ;)~

I think that you should submit your film as an entry into the Hawaii Gay & Lesbian Film Festival for next year. Give me an email addy and I will contact the Director who is a good friend of mine. They sponsor the writers/directors trip if you speak at the Festival.

Thanks for the blog LynnD. In past relationships it has always been tricky making sure my partner was given the legal rights should something ever happen. Thankfully nothing ever did. It is ridiculous what we have to fight for sometimes.

ok back to work for a while.

    Be back later....

I'm game for following up with theatres and festivals - though I'm a one-man operation so I can't keep up with this very happening blog space! ;-)

I encourage anyone who wants to either help and/or follow the film to go to our website and sign up for updates: www.inlawsandoutlawsfilm.com

You can also email me at campaign AT inlawsandoutlawsfilm.com

  64. Happy T.. Thursday Owls. I am being cryptic because we have a visitor and a celebrity at that. Welcome Drew.

LynnD: I will look for this film on our PBS schedule. I agree with all who said Love is Love no matter what. My Uncle and his partner have been together for over 35 years. They live in NY but I offered to throw a wedding if they want to come to CA to get married. Luckily for them, our family is all on board with having my Uncle's partner make decisions and all the things that a spouse would do and inherit, But I don't think his partner's family feel the same. So they need to get married so they can have all the same legal rights as the rest of us HUMANS!

Amicus: I remember you saying that you were named after the first hit for the Four Seasons. Even though you didn't name the song, I knew...

Barbwa: I meant to mention yesterday how I laughed at your new name for Lust Lin. Was that a Freudian typo or a conscious one?

I do believe that is our beautiful Shirley Owl today.

MEK: Feel better and rest today. Is Mr. MEK still sick too?

I have a visitor whom I haven't seen in about 2 years so we have a lot of catching up to do. (I am quickly typing this while she is in the bathroom). We are going out to lunch and I hope to get back to the nest later. Have a wonderful day all.

  65. Drew:
Well hello, and welcome! So Glad you stopped by, I had no idea, that google could let you know when a blog or vid is posted that is about your documentary.

Kudos to you Drew, and again thanks for stopping by!

  66. Happy Thursday Everyone!!!

What a great Blog today Lynn, and a huge welcome to Drew for coming and joining the nest! A real live celebrity among us!!!

I don't know if I have mentioned it on this blog, but a few of you whom I email with, know about my sister in Iowa. She is 64 and her partner is my age, 58. They have been together for over 30 years.

My sister is of the "generation" where she won't openly talk about being a Lesbian, we just all somehow "secretly" know! LOL The closest she has come to openly talking about her relationship, was this year when she sent Laurie a "get-well" gift and signed it "from your Two aunts" (she actually signed their names, but out of respect for her I will not mention their names)

I want so much to talk to her about her feelings etc., but it is taboo to her to do that. So, I just go about emailing, calling on the phone etc. and always say HI to her partner. It is very odd. I do not know what her feelings are about Gay marriage, whether she is satisfied with just being with her partner, or if she would like to legalize it somehow.

I do know I love her very much, and whatever makes her happy, is what I want for her also.

Whabby~ October 4th will be a glorious day for you and Huz! My best wishes and love to both of you!

Since I have never seen any actual pictures of Shirley, I have nothing to go on, except all of your guesses, so I will go with the majority (this time!) and vote for Sweet Shirley, Queen of the Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner feasts, as our Beautiful Grad of the Day! Love ya, girlfriend!

GOOD NEWS~ We finally have an actual date for Laurie's last MRI at UCSF! Monday, July 7th. I have made sure that they will be prepared this time with an anesthesiologist, and there will be no last minute mistakes!

BAD NEWS~ She is still sick with this awful stomach virus. After an ER visit Sunday night, where they did more blood tests, XRAYS etc. we still don't know what is causing this. She has been tested for every kind of infection imaginable, and everything comes up negative.

I am wondering if it is stress/anxiety related due to the fact of her upcoming surgery. I emailed her Dr again today and mentioned this.

We have tried to be as open and honest with her about the surgery, only being positive, but, you can never tell with Laurie what is going on inside. She could be holding all her feelings in, and that is causing this irritable stomach. We are both getting very worn out, not getting much sleep. I hope her Dr gets back soon with some answers. I am willing to go to Behavior Medicine with her if the need arises. I must get to the bottom of this and deal with it!

So sorry for the usual novel. I am so glad that you all put up with me!

    Love to all, DJ

  70. I have linked to some blogs on the main page of the nest, its under Blog Lists. If anyone has a favorite blog they want to share just let me know and I will put up the link.

The pics are also there, its my flickr account, just click on it and you will see all the graduating owls!

The Hit da Wall blog is my nephews, its just a take on how celebrities change over the years.

Maureen and Sandie's blogs are there as well...

  73. Hey Birdee! Congrats on first today.

I know that today's cutie patootie is our one and only Shirley!

LynnD LOL that you didn't want to be first when it was your blog. Wonderful job, by the way.

Love is precious and should be honored and cherished wherever it is found. I don't understand the folks that think that gay marriage will somehow undermine or devalue their heterosexual marriage. I really don't understand that line of thinking at all.

Drew How nice that you dropped in. Wonderful job on the documentary.

  92. Hi owls I am back from errands and I just checked out Drew's website! Very Cool!

Next week I am going to order a 5 pack of the DVD's from him.

When they get here I am keeping one and the other four I will gladly start a list to send to the owls for viewing. The only stiputlation is if you want to participate you will have to send your copy to the next owl on the list.

I will let you know when they arrive and we will start a sign up sheet!

Hope this sounds good! Let me know via MS if you are interested.

I am just amazed that I blogged about something that was wonderful and touching to me and so many of you have reached out to Drew with ideas and support!

This whole day has just blown me away!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Birdee:
If you strut around half Nekkid, I truly think for the first time you will clear out the Nest!

Nets might not be allowed, however a hook will work perfect :O)

  94. Lynn D:

    ReplyDelete
  98. LynnD:

I was going to do the same thing and order the 5 pack, but I am gonna keep one and pass the other 4forward with the stipulation that whoever I pass it to pays it forward and enlightens others.

Birdee is nakey??? LOL I see feathers everywhere!

MEK Sorry you don't feel well!

    ReplyDelete
  103. I must agree with everyone, that lovely young lady is our Shirley!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Mek:
Are you just counting? Perhaps I should buy you flash cards with numbers on them... :O)

    ReplyDelete
  105. Had to go try to eat something..

I am feeling better - I think it was a good thing that I got sick "from the tip of my toes" last night - or I would have been hurting worse!! I never have to eat at that place again - heck, and I only had the chips and salsa- don't think the tiny slice of watermelon had anything to do with it - or it could have been the beet juice on my little pile of carrots........ cuz, God Knows, i did not eat any of the "weeds" that were in the bowl!! :-)

Mr. MEK got a chicken from the grocery store - so I ate a little bit of that just now!! crossing fingers that it stays down!!

    :-)

someone asked how he was feeling - he's fine - he figured his sickness was "motion" from his flight -

    ReplyDelete
  106. cpgem - LMAO - flash cards would be good!!

I just let you know - I had to go eat - Mr. Mek had dinner ready!!

    ;-)

but - I'll just keep counting, if you want me too!!!

Shirley - YEAH, I finally got one right!!! Thanks for sharing...

    ReplyDelete
  107. pfffftttt! Excuuuuse meeeee!

Had a feather in my mouth!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Mek:
If you are too weak to type out comments! (which you just did). Then
you should continue to count, as that does not take to much energy!

Oh Boy, perhaps it was the beet juice, as I know that would make me hurl..

    :O)

    ReplyDelete
  109. Mek, chicken is alway's good for ya!

But, I really wish you HOwl's would
    eat "The Other White Meat"!

    ha!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Birdee:
Don't you dare get Nekkid, Mek is sick and you will only make her sicker!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Birdee:
The other white meat is Maureen, and to perfectly honest, I would rather eat you! As Maureen does not cause trouble!

    ReplyDelete
  112. LOL!

Seriously Mek, I hope you feel better and can keep some food down!

    ((((((HUGS))))))

    ReplyDelete
  113. Hey, Mo has been known to be naughty on occasion!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Thank you Zona, Barbara, Amicus, Mek, Tinka, Birdee, Jennifer, Jodi, Sandie, Bon'O, Sacbarb, Donna Jean, Just lin, Tina, Ebl, Carol and anyone I might have missed for the comments on my picture. It was taken 27 years ago.

I thought the long hair and lack of grey might stump you a little longer than it did. You guys are quick! Lol!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Birdee:
Yes perhaps, but you said it on occasion!

You are a daily chickenowl criminal!

    Mek:
    Are you done counting?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Birdee and cpgem - okay - here's the funny thing - I had taken "the other white meat" out of the freezer to have for dinner - for Mr. MEK to grill outside - he knew that I wasn't feeling well, so stopped and got the chicken, so that i wouldn't have to cook!!

SO -the other white meat will be tomorrow night's meal!!!

and YES, who grates up beets on a salad.... YUCK!!!!!!! I tell ya, this salad had things in it - I have NEVER seen!!! I should have known!! Upscale - NOT!!!

    ReplyDelete
  117. Shirley:
You have not change a bit! As I said Beauty In and Out!

    BTW,
Got any snacks up your sleeve? Oh wait and maybe some Pepto for MEK...

    ReplyDelete
  118. cpgem - I am NEVER done counting. and Birdee's feathers are blocking my view of the flashcards!

    ReplyDelete
  119. There - I can be done for a little while now!!
    LOL

    ReplyDelete
  120. Mek:
LOL... Birdee's freakin feathers are all over the place...

    Geez....

    ReplyDelete
  121. MEK I really hope you are feeling well now, but in case you have to vomit again, would you please do it on the naughty mat for easier clean up?

    ReplyDelete
  122. Just Lin - I will make sure that I make it into the bathroom - so, no worries!!

    :-)

    ReplyDelete

    Peanuts
    Bits & Bites
    Crackers & cheese

    Assorted. shooters

    ReplyDelete
  124. Shirley - thanks for the ginger ale - I think I will pass on the chips and salsa though - that's what started this whole thing!!
    LOL

    ReplyDelete
  125. cpgem - thanks for the can of beets - if you only knew how much I really don't like them..

my mom likes to tell the story - when I was a baby - she had all those little jars of baby food and was introducing me to different "tastes" - and no matter HOW many times she tried to feed me beets - i ALWAYS spit them out at her....... so - nothing has changed!!

    ReplyDelete
  126. Cracking me up!

Mek, Very nice of Mr. Mek to let the cooking gig go for tonight!

Besides, chicken is a bit easier on the tummy!

    Sorry Mo!!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  138. Carol:

Did you say that you would gladly eat Maureen before Birdee?? lmao

    ReplyDelete
  139. See, thats the problem with chickenowls, they don't know the difference between a 3 and a 30 when it comes to sunscreen...

You probably used a 3, and should have used a 30...

    ReplyDelete
  140. Who the hell skinned me anyway?!

Hi to all you beautiful birds and assorted ho's! I have been think of all of you.

I saw that cpgem8 went over the river and through the woods to shout out b-day wishes to LL ( and she said 'hi' to me, thank you very much *muah*), so feeling adventurous, I decided to do the same.:)
    ~
I got my tallest ladder and hauled my butt up all these rungs to get to your nest. (Clearly, I do not have my wings yet) Man, ya'll are really high up here! ( no pun intended;)
