Babies

by Shirley

Iteach's Baby Carolyn

What were you like as a baby? Cranky and crying all the time or happy and smiling? My Dad said I was a perfect baby...never cried for the first month until my mother pinched me to see if I would cry. My older sister Marilyn was a good baby too. She was a little over three when I was born. My brother Robert is eleven months and six days older and he was a very cranky baby. Mum has a picture of the three of us and Robert is crying. She said he fussed the whole time the photographer was there, but was fine after he left.

Do you have a baby book, or clothes from when you were a baby? Did your parents keep your favorite toy or rattle? How about your school work, and report cards? Did they keep the birthday, Mother's & Father's day cards? What about those wonderful works of art you painted or the clay ashtrays and animals you made? How much of your children's stuff do you keep? Is it hard to get rid of it and how do you choose what to throw away, if anything?

I called my mum and asked her if I had a baby book. She said she was given one at the hospital when I was born and that it was probably in the attic. I'll have to look for it some day. She doesn't have any clothes or pieces of hair though. I would love to hear what you have saved for yourself and for your children.

  5. Good Morning All! What a nice blog Shirley, and a sweet, peaceful picture of iteach's Baby Carolyn. My mom kept a baby book, school days book, some baby shoes (that I still hang on my Christmas tree, along with my 2 childrens' baby shoes), LOADS of pictures, and even some of my baby clothes. I've saved much too much of my childrens' things. It's ridiculous really. So hard to get rid of though. And you should see the pictures!!! I had tons to choose from, though, when I was putting together collages for my son's high school graduation party. Everyone loved seeing him "through the years". I plan to do the same for my daughter when she graduates. It's a lot of work, but photos are what I enjoy.

  7. Shirley wonderful blog!

Also, what a cute baby, I wonder who she is? :)

My mother kept a huge baby book about me (I'm the older one). Filled with a lock of hair, report cards, my first tooth, and tons of pictures.

My poor younger sister has a real small baby book. My mom just kept running out of time and forgetting about it.

  9. Now with my own children I find it a struggle to keep up with baby books, but I'm trying real hard.

My mom never kept any of my baby clothes, but I have of my children.

I have the outfits that they come home in and some other of my favorite outfits all stored away.

  10. When my hubby was born his mother received a lot of baby theme vases of flowers at the hospital.

    She kept all those vases!

So when I had my last one she had a florist fill all those vases with flowers and she had them sent to me.

They are the most beautiful old baby vases.

MEK got first! Ummm you better hurry or you are going to miss the plane!!! Have fun Hop a long!

Shirley: I have a baby book from my baby days and pictures.

According to my family I had colic and was a cranky baby, oh and I was also born breech!! NO wonder I was cranky!

My Dad tells the story of my Mom taking me for my first check up after I was born. She had me in layers and layers of blankets.

He dropped her off because he had to run an errand. She took me in and they checked me out. I was then re-wrapped in the layers of blankets.

She went outside to wait for my dad because I was crying and fussing. She waited for 15 minutes and my crying was getting louder and louder. She was of course rocking me in her arms and trying to get me to stop. Dad finally pulled up and she lambasted him for being late.

Mom started to unwrap me from the layers to give me a bottle. Dad said finally after the fourth blanket she had me uncovered and it turned out she had been holding me upside down the whole freaking time!!! No wonder I was screaming my head off!

    New Mom's!

I have pictures of my kids and report cards, and hair from their first haircuts and somewhere I have some baby teeth. I think those are in one of my jewelry boxes.

I have thrown out the kajillion crayon pictures over the years. The shear volume of them would have filled a landfill! LOL

Hope everyone has a great day!

  23. Morning Owls!

My poor Mom had a hard time with me as a baby. (Well, as a teenager too, but thats a different story!)I was also born breech and had colic, on top of that I was allergic to formula. She tried all different kinds, but I would projectile vomit them all. (tmi?) The doctor finally suggested goats milk, which was rather hard to find, but solved the problem.

My Mom kept clippings from the newspaper on our school field day and the 4th of July parade with me and my Bassett Hound in costume.

The neatest thing I have from my childhood is a journal that we had to keep in second grade. It is amazing to go back and read what was important to me as a little kid. There are entries about going on vacation, seeing the circus, my Uncle dying and even the presidential election.

  31. Good morning Hooters- Congrats on #1 ME- Have a blast going home!!!!

I was a good baby,or so I am told. My mom saved the ususal stuff, and recently gave us each our own box of stuff. That was cool.

The standing joke at my house from our youngest is that I have boxes of pics and baby stuff of his brother, and 1 polaroid of him!! I did way better with the oldest an his baby book.

I kept their coming home outfit (they both wore the same one- which was interesting since #1 was 6 lbs 10oz and #2 was 9lbs. 7 oz.) He looked like a 10 pound sausage in a 5 pound casing. LOL

I also kept hair, their beloved blankies and every ribbon, award and report card, etc.

Beautiful pic of Carolyn!! Great blog Shirley.

Both my boys were really good babies. The youngest one had about an hour every night that he was cranky (around 10:00 pm) and he was only calm if his FATHER rocked him on his chest. Little ingrate....

  32. Good morning Scirish and Goldie!

  33. Good Morning Iteach, Lynn, Carol, and Scirish.

It doesn't work posting on my Mac Book from my bed. All I could say was "Hi" which sounded so impersonal, and then it posted twice throwing out the day's count. Sorry about that. Great blog Shirley.

Lynn - I laughed out-loud when I read about you being held upside down. I was going to make a joke about it but then you did. I also got a kick out of 'all the layers'. We all did that years ago. Now I see babies being pushed in their strollers facing the wind. They have no hats on and I feel like telling the parents to "smarten up". Of course I never do.

Zona - Yes you must have missed where Mek said she thinks she has broken her toe. I have done that. I don't think she will be wearing any shoes on her vacation. At least it is summer time.
Thanks for looking at the pictures, on myspace, of VIG and me playing duelling computers on my deck. That was a fun day. Did you like my flowers? Kevin starts them for my birthday and mother's day and then I work hard to keep them looking nice. I am very proud of them.
Go to bed now. It was great talking to you last night.

Carol - I am looking forward to seeing the end result of your plans for our pictures. It should be another 'cool' day.

Iteach - You have beautiful children. That baby is a doll.

Donna - I am happy to see you posting again today.

Scirish - I kept my children's journals too. I find them so interesting. It gives a real in-sight to their childhood from their points of view.

  38. Good morning!

What a wonderful blog Shirley! And little Carolyn is beautiful.

I have a baby book that is filled out on every page. I am the oldest so I'm sure that's why!

It has hair from when I was a baby and a piece from when I was about 21.

I also have a baby tooth that my grandma sent me years ago! She had kept it and thought I would like it back.

Just recently, my mom brought over a bunch of letters I had written to her mom. I was cracking up at all the backwards letters, misspellings, things that kids do.

When I worked in the NICU, I remember parents always bringing in a special outfit to take their baby home in. It was so touching to see them dress the baby in that outfit.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day, I am enjoying reading everyone's stories!

    Welcome to Harltdo!

  39. I have mentioned before that we couldn't bring anything out from Halifax when I was five. Mom did keep however 2 little pairs of black patten leather shoes with the little straps. There is also a Christening bonnet which I think both my sister and l wore. Oh yes and she did bring out all the baby pictures she had.

I have kept so much from my children's childhood my basement and attic are full. I even kept their cribs. They are good for no-one because the law says they have to have smaller spaces between the slats. I just can't throw them away. I kept a lot of their clothes and most of their toys. I think I have boxes of paintings from their early years. The first painting my son brought home from kindergarten was one third yellow, one third blue, and one third red. I thought he was a genious. There is nothing more proud than a mother when her child goes to school for the first time. During my first ten years of teaching there were no kindergartens or even play schools. I loved teaching grade one because you got these children that were so eager to go to school and yet so afraid to leave their moms. Not many mothers worked in those days. There was always a lot of tears from both moms and kids during that first week.

  40. (**splitting long (DUH!) post**)

Shirley, what a wonderful memory jogger this morning!

Thank goodness, my mom was a saver, because (I think I told you this on the phone once) all my personal childhood memory scrapbooks, yearbooks, etc. were in a trunk stolen from the dorm my first year of college. I still have my own baby book with all the 'first' milestones and locks of curly white hair. She also kept (and I still have) my elementary school report cards and a few pieces of my 'art', homemade cards and writings.

I kept up my daughter's baby book, and taped 'wallet' size school photos all the way through Senior year of high school inside the back cover. Much to her chagrin, I also have a special book that has pockets for each school year's report cards and momentos, etc. The cover page for each pocket page lists height, weight, teacher, favorite activities and friends, pets, etc. As she became a teen, she often wrote me notes begging for sleepovers, puppies or other treats, including all the promises of the wonderful things she'd do if I granted her wish. How can you NOT keep those?

    ReplyDelete
  41. (**continued**)

I have a cedar chest chock-full of Cabbage Patch Dolls (with their birth certificates), awards and ribbons, special cards, baby shoes and clothes. In recent years, I've parted with just a few, for special occasions....

My granddaughter (who, as an infant, looked exactly like her mom, wore her mom's same pink crocheted dress home from the hospital when she was born, and wore her mom's 1st birthday dress for her 1st birthday. I 'archived' the Seventeen magazine from the week daughter turned 17, and sent it to her 17 years later, for her 34th birthday, just to prove how time flies!

Shirley, you've inspired me to scan a few of these memories to MS, and I'm loving seeing other Owl memories~~~Thank you!

  42. Good Morning Shirley and East Bay J.

My sister was born first. She was a perfect baby, well loved and content. Then 18 months later my brother was born with spinal bifada. They said he was a beautiful baby but he lived only 72 days. My mother was distraught. Then while she still wasn't strong, I was born 18 months after little John. I was not a strong baby and was very coddled. I never cried because I was never out of someone's comforting arms. The doctors told my parents not to let me cry because they said I had a heart murmur. (I don't think that is considered dangerous today). I also had problems with my back. The joke in the family was that my feet never touched the floor until I was three. I do believe that was an exaggeration but that's what I was always told. Because my mom was not well, my sister spent most of her time with aunts and became very independent. I never left my mom's side until I had to go to school. I never slept away from home until I was 13. I tried to go to a sleep over at the age of 12 but I was so homesick I came home at ten o'clock. My memories of my childhood, however, are all very happy ones.

  43. Good Morning Bonnie - It's hard to write a short post about childhood isn't it? I am going to answer a few messages on myspace and I will be back to read your comment.

    ReplyDelete
  44. BonO - I loved reading your comments. It reminded me that all my children wore the same outfit home from the hospital too. In those days the nurses dressed them in the clothes you gave them. Then they carried the babies down to the outside door and handed you the baby as you left. That was the first time the fathers would be able to hold the babies or see them without there being glass in between. With my grandchildren, the mothers and fathers and anyone else look after the babies right in the mother's room. It is so different. We stayed in hospital 9 days. Now they are out in 3. I really feel like I am from the olden days when we talk about differences in hospitals.

  46. Good morning everyone! MEK congrats on being 1st! (Actually 1-5)!

Shirley: What a great blog! I love the picture of Iteach's Carolyn too!

I was told I was a good baby. My sister (who is 4 1/2 years older) was not (so I am told)! However, my sister claims that I may have been a good baby, but I saved all my "naughty energy" to bug her)! My mom still doesn't believe it!

My mom always likes to tell me that I was BORN impatient as I was born before the doctor got there! She said I was born in an hour (from when she left home)! I guess my dad was still filling out the paper work when I was born!

I also have never liked to be hot (and still don't). My mom said I was like that since a baby too. She said that I never kept the blankets on and was always kicking them off. She found some blanket clips (that attached to the crib) and would find that I had crawled out on TOP of the blankets!

She saved a lot of things (had a baby book, report cards, picture, first lock of hair, etc.). In fact, she saved a lot of my baby clothes and toys so she could give them to Katie when she was born.

I'll talk about Katie on the next post (so not to drone on)!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I kept a record of everything my three kids ever said or did, right up to the time they went to school. I have baby books with their first time sitting up, first words etc. I kept a photo album for each child for each year and then a family album for each year as well. I was proud of the fact that there were just as many pictures of the third one as the first. I always remembered "Erma Bombeck's" article on the 'caboose' baby who had only his name written in his baby book and that was it. I am not criticizing anyone who did that. I know how busy it can get once you have more than one child. It was a hobby for me. I also kept school albums with their achievements, lists of friends etc. The books went from grades one to 12. My girls took over doing their own after about grade four. They cherish them and have the school books and baby books in their own homes now. I continued doing my son's. He really does not have any interest in it. I still have it. When his own baby goes to school he may take a second look at his "School Days". I really don't know. Boys have different priorities and are not usually as sentimental. He is very sentimental about his baby, however.
Now I make DVD imovies of my grandchildren. My daughter kept albums of her two children until the family got a digital camera. Now all the pictures are on the computer.

I need my breakfast. Good morning to all owls that land through out the day. I will be back this afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Jennifer - Good Morning. I see you posted while I was typing. I will read your comment when I get back home. Have a great day with Katie.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Now for Katie:

She was (and still is) a good baby! (However, she is far from being a "baby" but she will always be MY baby)!

She was so happy! She did cry a lot when I would put her down, so I carried her all the time (I was told by my doctor that I was spoiling her)! I don't buy that! She did have to "test the waters" a bit when she was 3 (not 2 like I had anticipated)! However, once we got over that hurdle, things were good again. She has always had a good heart (and still does) and is always more concerned that others are taken care of before herself! It's a quality in her that reminds me of my grandmother (who we named her after...but never had the chance to know her).

I have saved EVERYTHING of Katie's (esp. since she is my only child). I keep thinking that I need to get rid of things...but it's so hard to do so! Like Tink, my attic and basement are full! I am very sentimental and I remember who she got each gift from and why and it is hard for me to just give them away or toss them out! Maybe if I had other children, I wouldn't be so sentimental?

You're right Bon, 17 years is in a blink of an eye. Katie is going on 13 (in October) and I can't believe how fast THAT has gone!

Well, I really need to get going...

  54. Hi EBJ, Bonnie and Jennifer. I love reading all your comments.

I wished my mother had been more into saving stuff. She has quite a bit of stuff saved for my younger sister (ten years younger than me).

I guess when you have three kids under 5 you don't have a lot of time to update baby books. We had a hand pump in the kitchen for water and an outhouse for the bathroom, plus wood stoves in the winter to tend to. Washing diapers meant heating water on the woodstove and filling up the old washing machine with those two roller things that rang the water out. Still wish I had some stuff though. Oh well.

  55. I was suppose to born around my brothers b-day, Oct. 26th, but I wasn't born until Nov. 20th. Even then I didn't want to come out. They had to induce labor... twice. I was a wee thing though at 10lbs something! Lol! The nurses said I was going to be a lady wrestler when I grew up. Thank goodness that didn't happen! When mum first saw me she thought there was something wrong with my eyes...she couldn't see them cause my face was so fat, but the nurse told I was fine. When I called her last week to ask her question she said it was hard to remember so far back, so I am loving all the stories and memories you are all sharing. Thanks!

  57. Happy Monday Owls.

MEK: Congrats on 1-5. Safe travels and happy homecoming.

Shirley, Great blog topic. I love all the memories it conjures up. My Mom did not keep baby books on any of us, but she did keep report cards and a candle that I made her when I was a Girl Scout. I decorated it with pearls that I stuck on the candle with straight pins in the shape of an "M" for Mom.

She didn't keep any clothes because, 'in those days,' everything was recycled through the family until it wore out completely. She had one pair of our baby shoes bronzed for each of us. Mine have a hole where the stitching broke between the sole and the top of the shoe.

She also took tons of pictures of all three of us and kept them in albums which I now have.

After my Mom died, I also found a scrap book with ALL of the cards that my kids (her only grandkids) gave her for every holiday.

  58. I kept everything my kids ever did. I have such a hard time getting rid of stuff. But, just recently, I have gone through all of it and decided I could only keep ONE Picasso from each year and only the most important mementos, like report cards, and awards and a few of the handmade projects.

I have all boys and they are not sentimental when it comes to their school stuff, but maybe their wives will want it. Otherwise, they can burn it when I die.

Boy your mom with 3 children under 5 must have had some difficult days. Keeping a baby book would be the last thing on her mind. I feel bad about mentioning Erma's 'caboose' baby only having his name in his book. There wouldn't be much time for hobbies under those conditions. Your mom deserves a lot of credit. Keep on singing. I am off. Perhaps more owls will fly in and sing with you..

    Lynn - Congrats on 69.

  60. Hi SacBarb - I will save your comments to read when I get home.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Tinka you wouldn't say that if you heard me sing in person! But thank you anyway!

Hey Sacbarb! When you mentioned the bronzed shoes I remembered that I saw a pair of baby shoes in the attic once. I think mum said they were my brother's.

  62. Zona: So, you had that wicked humor streak even as a child and your sister was on the receiving end?

    Hartldo: Welcome to the nest.

Tinka: I only stayed in the hospital 3 days for each birth and my DIL only stayed 12 hours. Soon it will be drive through delivery. Damn HMO's.

LynnD: So let me get this straight...when your Mom wasn't successful in suffocating you she pinned your skin to the diaper? That may explain a lot!

Carol: I have no doubt you were a sweet baby because you are, as your Mom says, a sweet adult.

Goldie: We have tons of pics of our oldest son and since there are 10 years between our first and second sons, we have tons of pics of him too. The third son arrived 2 years later and I worked full time and was too busy to take pics. I told him, "just look at your brothers pics. You looked exactly like that."

Bon'O: I admire you for being so diligent in keeping up your daughters baby and beyond book. I always thought I would go back and fill in the pages, but that didn't happen.

Jennifer: So you didn't like to be warm...maybe that's why you like cold days.

    Scrish: Is the house sold?

Iteach: Carolyn is such a cutie. I loved to watch my kids sleep.

Waving a wing at anyone I missed and all who land after me.

  63. As I was sitting here at the computer I began thinking about songs you sing to your baby. Check out the lyrics to these two song.

    Hush, Little Baby

Hush, little baby, don't say a word.
Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird

And if that mockingbird won't sing,
Papa's gonna buy you a diamond ring

And if that diamond ring turns brass,
Papa's gonna buy you a looking glass

And if that looking glass gets broke,
Papa's gonna buy you a billy goat

And if that billy goat won't pull,
Papa's gonna buy you a cart and bull

And if that cart and bull fall down,
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town

    Rock-a-Bye-Baby

Rock-a-bye baby, in the tree top
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock
When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall
And down will come baby, cradle and all

  64. Ok, first I want to know WTH this father was thinking when he went shopping for his kid? Were they out of rattles and teddy bears at the store?

And who puts their baby in a tree?

What were the people thinking when they wrote the lyrics to these songs?

    I'm off to get lunch.

  65. Hey Hooters!!!

I know it has been a while since I have posted at the nest~

I have had a interesting couple of weeks. My Mom came down ill suddenly and she was quite serious. Luckily they have determined what is wrong and she is "knock wood" on her way to a full recovery. She will be in the hospital for a couple more weeks, but I can't tell you how many times I reserved a seat and then cancelled it in the past 14 days...lol. Thanks to those who sent their well wishes. You know who you are and it is much appreciated!!! Warms my lil turtle heart.

    NOW>>>>>>>

The arrival and myth that is Tina_not in UT...lol.

The T family arrived last Wednesday, and I received a call shortly thereafter. My office is near the airport and right on the way to Waikiki. I mentioned that and the next thing I knew they we're pulling up outside my office..lol. Let me tell you...I normally greet arrivals with fresh lei in hand. Not this time, I had to scour my office and find every Kukui Nut Lei so as to welcome them properly.

It has been a whirlwind since then. Tina is quite funny in person, Mr. T has been quite tolerant of us two as we laugh our ASSES off!!! Let me tell you~
The kids, once they realized I was not some internet freak have loosened up and now refer to me as "Auntie". We have done the Swap Meet, Plate Lunch (I think I have replaced her favorite spot with a new one...lol), seen Sunway perform, eaten gelato, sent phone pics to some (ummm hello?), walked Waikiki at night, been to the National Cemetary of the Pacific also know as Punchbowl (said hello to my Dad as he is scattered there), laughed our asses off, have had a homemade meal by Mr. T, and thats just some of the stuff when I have been around. I may need a vacation from Tina's vacation...lol.

I am having them over to the house for a BBQ this week, and hope to take a couple of days off as well.

I have posted a couple of pics on my page is the Blog Buds folder and hope to add some more today.

Hope all is well with everyone.

  66. When I had my youngest, my oldest was three and my middle child was two. For two months I had all three in diapers.

That is why I'm held hostage in my own house.

  69. You mean you are NOT an internet freak K-girl??? LOL- just kidding, I had to convince MR. Goldie the first time I went to meet Jodi that she was not going to turn out to be an ax murderer. He's mostly convinced now... ;)

LOL@ Shirley and the song and Sacbarb and the baby pics.

i think it's great how much time you have been able to spend with tina! sounds like you guys are having a great time!

glynis...miss you already! i had so much fun! pass gas u ass!!!!
    BWAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAA!!!!

  71. Good...err, afternoon...Owls! Geez, where did the morning go?

Shirley, I was a third child so I don't seem to have a thing saved from my early childhood. I made sure that all of my kids had beautiful scrapbooks, but didn't save a lot of other stuff. I have a ton of my daughters clothes because she was the cleanest baby ever. The boys were droolers and spitter-uppers (is that a word?) and I had very few pieces I could even hand down to friends, let alone keep.

Barb~ I miss you too and can't stop laughing about some of the stuff from this weekend. I saw Becky today (the kids have VBS) and she said it was very cool that you were able to sit and laugh with us about "pass gas u ass". She asked if you would come back again and I told her "definitely!!"

Hey everyone~ If you were a pair of glasses that belonged to a 7 year old little boy, where would you be right now? We have searched all morning!! I am not surprised I can't find them.... this place is a mess (except for the kitchen which I spent my free morning cleaning. ARGH!)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Barb~ hee hee...yes, I did!!

Kahonugirl~ Glad your mom looks like she is doing better. And so happy you had a fun visit with Tina. It is great when we get to meet each other!!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Awwwww....tell Becky that I can't wait until next year! I'm glad that I was able to meet her at a "happy" time. I think that weekend was very good for those that just needed to get away and unplug....like me!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Shirley...what a great topic! It's fun to think about the Owls as young'uns!!! Nice singing too!

iteach...your baby is so adorable!!!!! Thanks for sharing a very sweet picture!

MEK....hope you have a wonderful trip! Be safe!

Kgirl...so glad you are feeling better about your Mom's situation. So good to hear things are improving for her. Healing thoughts for her!

Zona...thank you for the well wishes. I am still feeling rough but did go to work today! How's the swimming today?

So I am the youngest of five and the only female, and according to my brothers I was a very spoiled baby, but I just think they remember it all wrong! My oldest brother's baby book is perfect and with each additional child the baby book had a little less in them until you get to mine and my name is in it and my birthdate and who came to visit me at the hospital. It cracks me up every time I look at it!

    Have a marvelous Monday all!

    ReplyDelete
  75. SHIRLEY - Great blog!!!

ITEACH - Triple love that pic of Carolyn. Those were always my fav of my kids, too!!!

GOLDIE - lol @ convincing MR. GOLDIE that I'm not an ax-murderer!!! You mean he's still not convinced?!!? :P

I was the oldest of 2 boys and my mother was a total packrat!!! After she died...I threw out all of the cards from the hospital, and I think she had all our b'day cards til we were all about 5! She had saved some of our outfits....most of which I used to dress my dolls in. I have officially been designated the "keeper" of the stuff!!! I have both my and my brother's baptismal outfits....all of which my children wore when they were baptized. I also have the white blanket that my Great Grandma Jacobson gave me when I was born....and used it on my kids' baptisms, too!!! The other thing that I used and my mother saved was my crib. All three of my children slept in it!!! I have a pretty complete baby book for my oldest, but I must confess that I have slipped with the 2 boys. I have kept most of their report cards, and have kept a handful of their artwork. There was a time not long after my Mom died that Sam draw pics of her Angel Nana....of course I still have those!!!

    spitting this in two!!!

    ReplyDelete
  76. TURTLE - So glad Z is on the mend. :D And I'm sorry I missed you and Tina this morning......but I was already at work!!! Can't wait to see more pics. Especially of TINA on your vibrator....um, I mean motorcycle!!!

  82. MEK Congrats on #1. I hope you're having a great time! I especially hope no one steps on your foot!

Shirley What a great blog you wrote for today!

iteach I love that precious pic of Carolyn!

LynnD LMFAO!!!!! You're lucky you survived! Once my mom left me on top of a bed for a moment then couldn't find me. I had gotten wedged between the bed and the wall!

My mom made me a shadowbox which is hanging on my bedroom wall. In it is my birth announcement, a clipping of the newspaper announcement, a lock of my baby hair, the little beaded bracelet the nurses put on me that has my last name on it, my first photo, and the booties that I wore home from the hospital. I have a little crocheted jacket that I wore home, too. I also have lots of photos and drawings that I did. In about 2nd grade I made a "book" of crayola drawings depicted my homelife. One picture I drew is the backside view of my mother pulling weeds in a garden. The caption I wrote was, "Work. Mother. Work" LMAO!!!!

    **** splitting post ****

    ReplyDelete
  83. SACBARB & ITEACH - ooh, ooh, ooh....ME TOO!!!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I have a drawer full of my children's drawings, etc., their baby blankets and a few special pieces of clothing. I do have baby books for both of them, too.

I have a "book" my daughter made when she was little about the things that she loved. On one page is the drawing of a cat with the caption, "This is a cat. I love it." On another page, a drawing of a flower, "This is a flower. I love it", and it goes on like that. On the very last page is a drawing of a girl and the caption reads, "This is me. I love it".

    I love that "book".

    ReplyDelete
  85. J/L this just reminds to keep doing books like that in my classroom. I always wondered, if parents kept some of that neat stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  86. JUST LIN - Luving your daughter's "book"!!! Puts a smile in my heart. Those are the best!!

My Dad still has the plate I made in 2nd Grade hanging in the living room. We made Christmas plate for our families. Mine said Merry Christmas to Mommy, Daddy, Eric and.......I had run out of room so I drew an arrow to the top of the plate and wrote Dale. Probably not my best work, but not bad for 2nd Grade!!!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Jodi I wonder if that is prophetic that Dale's name hovers above the rest of them. (((HUGS)))

  88. I love reading all the baby stories. I think our favourite memories are in the school journals that my children wrote each day every year until they were in about grade four. I love reading them.
When Cara was six she got a talking Tom and a talking Jerry. Does anyone remember that cartoon? If not you can still google them. Well, Tom the cat said many things including "Mice are nice on toast and rice". For some unknown reason my tuna casserole became known as "Mice are Nice". That was what the children called it. One day in grade two Cara wrote in her journal, "We had mice are nice for dinner last night". The teacher wrote sweetly in red pencil. "Are you sure?" I laugh every time I read it and wonder what the teacher thought of my cooking.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Jodi - That plate is such a treasure. You will always cherish it.

  90. Good afternoon owls

I am going to ask that you forgive me ahead of time but this is weighing on me heavily and I am just going to make my statement and be done with this matter.

I have been feeling uneasy about several posts by other owls in the last few weeks and feel that they have been posted in a manner to hurt other people on this blog. They have been posted in thinly veiled courtesy but are pretty obvious when really read what the intent is.

I thought this blog was set up as a safe haven for all of us that had had enough of this kind of nonsense on the Rossblog. That is why I moved here and have been happy with the wonderful people that post.

I don't know what the issue is for a few or what the point is unless it is to try to run another owl off or to break up the blog.

Really if either one of these is the motive then I question why you are here in the first place?

It is quite tiresome and has no place here. So please rethink what you are doing and why, if you are attempting this then just please leave before you cause anymore distress or hurt feelings.

Carol this is my own statement and if you wish me to leave the blog please email me at MS or my private email.

    Thank you kindly,
    Lynn D

  91. I am home from visiting my mom. I wish she still had her memory. It's so hard to know that when I get home she has no memory of the time we had together. I guess I should be thanking God that she still knows me when I am there. The glass is still half full.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I am going to lay out on the swing and drink in the beauty of this day. My back yard has such a beautiful aroma of lavender. I will be cutting it this week so I think I will enjoy it while I can.
I will see you all tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Lynn - I am sorry if it looks like I ignored your comment. I didn't see it and I have posted before and after it.
It gives us food for thought. I think we should all remember to be kind to each other. After all in spite of the differences in our looks we all belong to the same owl family.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Lynn,

That was a very good statement and it was done with a lot of class.

You are right Lynn there are hurt feeling here. It is bound to happen when you have a lot of passionate and independent people around.

It happens everywhere, but the key point is to move on. It is hard thing to do, but I have faith we can do it.

Thanks Lynn for getting this out in the air in a friendly manner.

    Turtle:

    and
Kudos on meeting Tina and having a blast. I am very glad her family does think you are a internet freak! LOL..on needing a vacation from Tina's vacation...

  100. Turtle I'm so glad your mom is recuperating. I'm sorry I didn't say that sooner. Sometimes it's hard for me to keep up with all that is going on here. It sounds like you and Tina are having a fun time together. Everytime I think of Hawaii, I think of Chi chi's. Yummy!

  101. Shirley,
I have my baby book, and what I treasure the most about it are the poems my dad wrote.

    I'll share one of them...

As through this window I joyfully stare,
I see a small bundle all wrapped up with care.

I see the pink blanket; I see the black hair,
I wonder if she feels my love over there.

The nurse now carefully brings her to the window,
And the next I hear, they say I must go.

I want to linger; I want to say no,
But the nurse insists I stop moving so slow.

I look one more time and then say goodbye,
And my eyes fill with tears, and I start to cry.

I love that little bundle of joy I see,
And somehow I know that bundle loves me.

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  102. Oh Amicus, that poem your dad wrote is priceless. It made me cry. What a beautiful keepsake.

K-Girl - I also apologize for not mentioning your mother before. I somehow missed that story of her illness. I hope she is better soon. Mothers are such treasures.
Glad you are having fun with Tina. Tell her to fly to Vancouver Island next. I think she is a hoot. As are you!!!!!

  103. Amicus I love that poem! Thanks you sooo much for sharing it. What a fantastic thing to have from your Dad.

  105. The purpose of this blog was for all to stay together, once we split off from Rossland. It is something I had never expected to grow as it did. The friendships that are made here are quite special. However we all have different personalities, different issues, and different thoughts. So it can be difficult when one states something that another does not understand or appreciate.

The written word can come off much differently then when one is face to face, I always said (even on Rossland) you must always read between the lines of a comment, that perhaps has struck a cord with you.

I know there has been tension on the blog, and I know others feel it. I know in my heart that is why iteach so gallantly had the picnic, so we can be brought back together, and remember the fun!

Lynn, I appreciate the candor and in no way, would I ask you to ever leave this blog. Oh my goodness, Never!

We are all adults, and we must find a way to put this behind us and go forward, as if we don't then what we created was for naught!

I shall state this, as perhaps it will help. If one has a problem with a comment and or statement, then one should e-mail/msg that person privately to try to resolve it. Perhaps then they can explain to each other their feelings or grievances.

My comment today is in no way, because I have created night owls, it is a comment I post as a participant of night owls...

So I say, lets all collect our thoughts, regroup, and go towards the yellow!

    ♥♥♥

  106. Thank you Carol and Lynn.

It's hard to decide who anyone is talking about these days because it could be a number of people. It very well could be me for all I know. But I will say that I have not been feeling very welcome here of late, and have toyed with just bagging it too. I find that certain people have made this blog to be all about them, and really have not been very open to others. That is just my opinion and if I lose friends over it then so be it. I have never been one to hurt peoples feelings and have pretty much been one to give people the benefit of doubt before passing judgement, but this is beyond ridiculous the way I feel some get treated here.
Just MY opinion. Love me or hate me, I'm just me.

  107. Good Evening Owls!

MEK: Have a wonderful time on your trip!

    Tinka and Shirley: Thank you!

SacBarb and Tinka: I loved Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat! It was a lot different than what I expected, but what a fun show! :)

I've been dying to tell you all the best part though. I got to meet Christopher Kale Jones after the show. He played the role of Joseph, but he was also the lead Frankie in the Jersey Boys tour.

I felt like a giddy 16 year old schoolgirl again. I was so nervous! I'm still floating on Cloud Nine though. :)

    Waving HI to everyone!

    Have a great evening!

  108. K-girl I didn't know your mother was ill either. I'm glad she feeling better.

Iteach I like "You Are My Sunshine" much better than those other songs.

Barb and Glynis it sounds like you had a great weekend. I saw all your pictures, even the one that had Lynn D's relatives in it. Did either of you get a chance to say "Hi"?

Glynis congrats on 100 and congrats to you Lynn D on your first 69!

Vig I'm sorry you haven't been feeling well. Hope you get better soon. With four brothers you probable deserved to be spoiled a little.

Jodi what fun it must be to go through all the stuff every once in a while.

Just Lin I had never heard of a shadowbox before but what a great idea!

Thank you all again for sharing your memories with me and everyone. I have loved reading and laughing today. Thanks Carol and Iteach too!

  110. Amicus -You lucky girl. Imagine meeting someone from two shows you liked. That is great. I saw "Joseph" in Vancouver in 1991. Donny Osmond was the lead. That may sound strange but he did a wonderful job. He played the part in his home city in Utah for over 2000 performances. I bet Christopher Kale Jones was fantastic to see and hear. You have had a lot of fun seeing shows this year. I envy you as I love them too. I wish they would come to Victoria.

  111. Good evening feathered friends~

MEK...congrats on 1st! Hope you arrived "home" safely and the toe isn't causing you too much pain.

SHIRLEY...great bloggy! I believe your dad that you were a perfect baby...still are perfect!

ITEACH...Carolyn is BEAUTIFUL! How gracious of you to share the photo of her with us!

LYNN...I hope you know I am laughing with you...not at you! You crack me up! Your mom sounds like such a hoot! I bet your mom and my mom are having a riot together in heaven!I'm sure they have met up!

ZONA...ROFLMAO at what you did to your sister! My brother did that to me!!!!

I was, IMHO, the bestest baby in the universe! ;)~

Seriously, my mom said I was a jovial baby. Not a crier (why am I now???)and I was a night owl even as a baby. She also said I never talked baby talk...began talking in complete sentences. My brother is 8 years older and he adored me...until I began talking...then he was over me!!

There are no baby books and far fewer pics then my brother had. My bro and I looked a lot alike as babies and my mom tried to pass off pics of him as me when I questioned why there were so few of me! Backfired when I turned the pic over and there was a date on it...years before I was born!

She didn't save any school work or cards and stuff like that...maybe she got rid of it when my dad died and we had to move to Ohio. She did save an outfit my grandmother knit for me. And I have the "honey shoes" I wore when they had to break my legs and straighten them. And I have "Chimpy" my blue monkey my Aunt Sophie sent me when I was born.

I also have my cowgirl outfit I wore every week when the Rifleman came on...I was supposed to marry Johnny Crawford!! ;)~

I am going to finish reading the comments...see ya in a while crocodiles

    ReplyDelete
  112. Tinka,
That doesn't sound strange to me at all, because Donny Osmond was the one chosen to perform a couple of the Joseph songs at Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday celebration. I've watched it on DVD, and I think he does a wonderful job too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  113. I did it. I got #150 and didn't get stepped on.

Shirley- I always sang "Where Are You Going? My Little One Little One. Where Are You Going? My Baby, My Own.
    Turn around and you're two
    Turn around and you're four
Turn around and you're a young man going out of the door.
    Turn around and you're tiny
    Turn around and you're grown
Turn around and you're a young wife with babes of your own.

All my kids and grand kids liked that one. They also like Toora Loora Loora (Irish Lullaby. The first time I sang it to Naomi she fell right asleep. My heart sang.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Amicus - I agree. It doesn't sound strange to me because I think he has a wonderful voice. I think it surprised some of the critics who connected him with "The Donny and Marie Show"--- with his purple socks. I thought he was great.

  119. Hey Mo it is so good to see you in the nest! Laugh away!

Amicus that is the most beautiful poem I have ever read.

    Carol Thank you!

Hope everyone has a wonderful evening!

  120. Maureen - You are so right about the bond between daddy and daughter. My dad would ask "Where is the baby?" and he would be referring to me. At the time I was about 25 and didn't think it was cute. I later appreciated the fact that he still saw me that way.

Shirley - Another song I would sing to my kids was "Daddy's Little Girl". Do you know that one? It starts with "You're the end of the rainbow, my pot of gold. You're daddy's little girl to have and to hold". It's a tear jerker but I loved to sing it. Later I changed it to "Nana's Little Girl".

  121. Amicus, thank you so so much for sharing something so personal, that was beautiful!

  122. Shirley - I hope you miss the
brunt of the storm. It sounds like a bad one. Remember the one a few years ago when they lost thousands of old trees in Halifax. Were you affected by that one?

  124. Iteach - I waited just long enough for you to jump in. You got the 69.

  125. That's what I need here, a cheering section. You are lucky.

  126. Iteach - I forgot to direct my comment to you.

  127. Tink, what movie will you be watching tonight in bed?

  128. Maureen: Thank you! I could have guessed you were a jovial baby, because you're still a social, cheerful person. You were the first to welcome me to the RossBlog and make me feel included. :)

Lynn: A thanks to you too! LOL at you being the test baby. The good news is the outcome was a wonderful sense of humor. :)

Iteach: I appreciate your kind comment too. Carolyn is beautiful! I have a pair of snowman PJ's similar to hers, only mine are red. :)

  129. I was going to pretend that I didn't read all the comments and stay away from whatever is brewing.

I don't know what is going on...maybe ignorance is bliss. I do know that I hurt when my friends are hurting or hurt. And apparently some of my friends are hurting.

In my past blogging life, I have been hurt, mis-quoted, lied to and about and a variety of painful things having to do with the blog I was an active (and positive) member of.

Along with that pain came some wonderful relationships and what I truly consider friendships. There are also a lot of acquaintences...and that is fine.

I understand that not everyone is going to love and adore everyone else. That is fine, too. But one rule is to be respectful and adult. If one of my friends considers someone I don't care for or have any relationship with a dear friend...then I am glad they have that person in their life. I am not going to drop a true friend because of their friends. And I am not going to make cryptic posts about them...I have far bigger issues in my life then to do that.

Carol devotes A LOT of her time to this nest. She is called upon to create blogs when we don't provide them. She finds photos and makes arrangements when she is away so we have a new blog every single day. How can we expect her to continue to spend her valuable time on us when there are foolish childhood games being bantered about.

If you don't like the company, then why come here and perpetuate the foolishness? I am not suggesting anyone leave. Make your posts and be respectful of each other...whether you like them or not. The last time I looked there were graduation pics of most of us so I know this isnt a junior high.

LYNN...{{{{hugs}}}} for caring enough about Carol and the nest to do the post you did. IMHO you will always be a welcome participant here and I for one always look forward to your posts...and hope to be able to continue to do so.

CAROL...{{{{{hugs}}}} to you for being you and all you do for the nest...and me.

If I overstepped any boundaries, especially since I have been around much less then before, then I apologize. I just want to be able to know that at any given time I can fly in and there will be support for each other, laughter to share and tears to cry with each other...whether happy or sad. That is what I believe the true spirit of the blog is to be about. And of course the food ;)

  130. I'll have what she's having!!

Kudos Mo- and lynn and barb for saying how you feel.

I am apparently living in ignorant bliss too- but I agree with every word MO said.

  131. OK....Now I am just in shock. iteach has deleted me from myspace because she feels that I have completely offended her. NOW WHAT DID I DO???????SERIOUSLY WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS HORRIBLE THING THAT I HAVE DONE BECAUSE I'M COMPLETELY CLUELESS!
I have never....NEVER....said anything to you iteach that is harsh. NEVER. I'm extremely hurt.
This is what Jennifer had to say to me. Could someone please tell me what is going on!

    "Barbara,

I was very surprised to see how negative your note was, it scared me. I felt like you were being a bully to me.

I have come to far in my life to listen to harsh words like yours. They were very harsh and negative.

In fact they scared me so bad I have to delete you as a friend.

    Jennifer"

**crawling off into the corner to cry**

  132. Why in Earth would you post a private note here!!!!

I went to myspace like Carol told me!!!

I kept it out of the nest!!!

This is exactly why you scare me!

I can't believe you posted my private letter here, that was lower then low.

  133. Shirley:
You always make me smile :O)
    Thank You!

    Amicus:
That is so exciting, I am thrilled for you!
    and
I loved the poem, thank you for sharing something so personal with us!

  134. Jennifer,
I'm still wondering what it is that I did to you personally? I never sent you any note, I have never said anything to you that is harsh. I'm shocked at YOUR note to me! What in the world did I do? I was hoping that someone could shed some light on this since I seem to be this big idiot who can't figure anything out! Seriously people! Would someone tell me.....right here on the blog for all to see because I have NOTHING to hide! NOTHING! I'm shaking! I can't believe that someone hates me for doing nothing.......
Please....If I have offended anyone on this blog and they wish to delete me from myspace then go ahead and do so. I'm not trying to sound pissy....I just don't know what else to say. or how to world it. I am sorry for whatver I did to Jennifer and to anyone else. Just please tell me what the hell I did so that I will never EVER repeat this horribe unforgivable act!

  135. Barbwa:
I don't think anyone can explain what is going on other than wires being crossed, peoples feelings being hurt, etc etc etc....Iteach did e-mail you privately and you should have replied to her directly....

This happen to me once, when the blog first started, I addressed Delores Crump here on the blog, and I was wrong, I should have contacted her privately as she stated I should have, I did not, she was right!

From that day forward I promised myself I would not do it again and I did not...at least I don't think I did..(Short term memory at times)

There is a strangeness here today, I will have to let it be, as I can only do so much!

  136. I would really appreciate it, if others will come out and comment, we need to all get thru this, one cannot do it alone, I am asking for help. Be respectful, Please. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  137. Carol- I would comment if I knew what was going on. I'm sorry to say I have no idea and am shocked about the whole thing.

I really hope we can work thru this and make it the happy, fun place it is meant to be.

I am sorry that any of my friends feel upset, hurt, angry and unhappy.

I am going to bed now- unhappy and sad now too.

  138. I am feeling as clueless as MO and Goldie. I am sorry to see that there are some misunderstandings between some of our owls. I am sure that is all it is.

I do agree with Carol that it is best to work out these misunderstandings in private.

Sending big hugs to everyone who is hurting today!

  139. Turtle: I didn't know what was going on with your mother! I'm sorry to hear of such stress and worry that you have been under. I'm glad to hear she is on the road to recovery! I'll keep her in my thoughts and prayers (and you as well)!

    HUGS!!!

By the way....I just love EVERYONE's baby stories! This has been a fun blog today. Thanks again Shirley!

  140. i did message back iteach, but she deleted me from myspace without any kind of explanation except the message that she sent, the message that made absolutely no sense to me because I have never contacted her before that. so it's kinda hard to private message her. it's also hard for me work anything out when I have no idea what it is I need working on. I sure have noticed that many owls have bailed for the day. I thought that we were suppose to be free to say our feelings on here. That everyone has an opinion. Maybe some feel that is not the case for everyone. I am truely saddened by what has happend. But I will not sit back and be attacked by someone who barely knows me. Someone who I have never been anything but nice to.

    ReplyDelete
  141. barbwa:
I am here, I did not bail, and would not...

    ReplyDelete
  142. Barbara I am here also but I can't make comments on something when I don't know the fact.

Would the two of you be willing to talk via phone and maybe straighten this out? Just a suggestion.

    ReplyDelete
  143. thanks carol. you really should not have to be dealing with this. i should not have to be dealing with this. i've been crying and shaking for the past hour and now my back is killing me. for what???? a misunderstanding? what did i do to me so misunderstood that someone actually is afraid of me? i am really starting to believe that someone is spreading some aweful lies around and that hurts my soul.

    ReplyDelete
  144. what's to straigten out shirley? i didn't do anything. that is the problem. i got a random message from her and then she deleted me. it makes me worry about what it is she thinks i did.

    ReplyDelete
  145. BarbWa: I don't think people have bailed. They just don't know what is going on and feel helpless. I think everyone feels badly, but know one knows how to help.

It is getting late here (10:30 PM) and I am very tired. I worked on my fence all day (and have one section left to go).

I hope things work out and that we can be positive towards one another again.

    HUGS to all!

    ReplyDelete
  146. barbwa:
I am all hopes that rumors are not being spread, that is not what the nest was suppose to me. I have not heard any rumors...

    ReplyDelete
  147. BARBWA...I did not bail...just multitasking.

You are right...we should be able to share our opinions and beliefs and whatevers here. And Carol allows and encourages that. I don't really know you very well. I never got to know you too well on the RossBlog, either. I do know that I have never been rude to you or you to me. But, I do agree that posting Jennifer's email here was not the best choice. I do understand how the truncated messages and posts can be misconstrued, misunderstood and mistaken. That is why it is best to keep it between the parties involved.
I am passing no judgements. I feel bad that people are hurt...all people.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Carol I don't know what else to say. If it can't be fixed via myspace that's the only other option in my mind.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Carol: Thank you for being excited for me and for enjoying the poem!

I too am in the dark about what's going on in the Nest tonight so I'm going to bed.

    Goodnight Owls!
