Internet Addiction?

by Iteach

Lately, I have noticed how dependent I am of the internet. I love chatting on the blog, playing with myspace and I have always enjoyed shopping on it too.

Is it a hobby for me?

Is it an addiction?

Do I need an intervention?

I became very attached to the computer four years ago. At that time hubby was traveling a lot and it was hard to get out. Even though I truly enjoy staying home with my kids sometimes I miss the adult conversations. So during nap times, Barney TV hour, and bedtime I would always run to the computer.

I have my ritual everyday of which websites I visit and I write down new ones to visit later.

Is it easy for you to unplug?

Do you have favorite websites that you go to everyday?

What are your thoughts about the internet?

I sure do enjoy it, but I think sometimes too much.

Bebbi....Thanks for the website...free is always good!

Donna Jean...So glad things went well. Sorry you both have to go through it again but glad they caught it before there was a problem!

  5. They are frustrating but I'm still wearing them. Thanks for asking and congrats on 1st.

  6. Shirley...Maybe you need to get them adjusted?? My new ones were super blurry at the sides until they adjusted the ear and nose pieces.

  7. Morning Glories,

    Scrishy got first! Yahoo!

Iteach: I generally have an addiction too! Tho the last week I have not had much of a chance to be on.

I have a routine each morning and I have sites I must check throughout the day. Right now it is mainly news and political sites.

DonnaJean so happy to hear that you and Laurie Elizabeth are home and Laurie is doing well!

Zona is in UT with Tina and I can hear the police sirens from here! LOL

Scrish you lost 15 lbs? Good for you!

Bebbi is walking all her weight off! I need to use you guys as inspiration and get motivated!

Well I will try to check back a little later. I am somewhat hormonal this week and so have been a little down. Kind of feeling that depression fog so I haven't been in the nest as much.

Ronnie, uses for saran wrap on an island.

Use a sheet stretched out to catch morning dew and you can drink it.

Wrap it around my books to keep them dry. Matches too.

You can also wrap it around yourself to keep warm. Hold in body heat.

Wrap your food to keep flies and bugs out!

See very practical on a deserted island!

  13. Good MOrning EVERYONE that has posted so far. I am running TOTALLY late for work, so this is a quicky!

    SCIRISH..congrats on first.

ITEACH...I have an internet addiction, too! Maybe we can get a group intervention going on!

  14. Wow! Slow day at the nest...

Tink...Where are you? Are you still feeling poorly?

  15. Good Morning All-

Scirish - I 'picked up' the flu last Tuesday and I am still not well. The light from the computer makes me feel worse. I was taking my family out to dinner tonight to celebrate my son's birthday but I had to cancel. That has made me sad. I will be back on the blog as soon as I feel better.

Have a good day everyone and
thank you friends for your good wishes.

    ReplyDelete
  16. not first~ :)~

    scirish~ congrats on first~

    mo~ quickies are good~ :)~

Tinka~ hope you are well soon~

lynnd~ we heard the sirens last night too~ :D

I love the internet~ I cannot stay off of it. Well, I can. When I was in Hawaii, it nearly killed me....and would have if i didn't have my phone....but I stayed off of it for all but one day~ It's just too much fun~

Off to my son's lacrosse game with Zona~ (that girl flipped me off!) okay....so I did it to her first~ :D

    ReplyDelete
  17. Tina - I am SO happy that you guys are getting along so great --- have fun at the lacrosse game!!

Tinka - sorry to hear that you are not feeling well....

    MO- don't work TOO hard...

  18. scirish Congrats on #1 today!

    iteach What a great blog!

The computer is now part of my daily routine, although I really resisted getting one in the first place.

I am on it in the morning and again at night, stopping by quickly during the day, too. It makes me feel less alone in this house since my husband died. That's kind of funny since I have always enjoyed and highly valued my "alone" time. I have other friends that I sometimes do things with, of course, but this computer is now like a friend that sits patiently in the corner bringing me news from other friends.

I'm going through "withdrawals" now, as Custard and I used to write back and forth constantly. As you know, he still writes sometimes and my ex-fiance is writing so that's providing some distraction.

It's so easy to play on the computer instead of doing something like vacuuming! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  19. The little girl's birthday party was cute.

The day has been just beautiful here and now my kids are sleeping.

I think I'm going to go nap with them.

    See ya later!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm thinking about naming my computer.

Have any of you done that?

    ReplyDelete
  21. iteach At work there were a group of computers that we gave names to so we could more easily leave messages with our tech guy as to which computer was having problems. I only remember one name, "Elvira".

    ReplyDelete
  22. Happy Saturday Owls.

Iteach, I think I may be addicted to the Internet. I look around my house and see things that need to be done, but I play on the computer instead of doing them. And if I am not on the computer, I am probably scrapbooking. I think I am a hopeless case and I don't think I care. LOL

Scirish, congrats on #1 and the loss of those pesky 15 lbs.

Hi Shirley, I'm glad you have your computer to keep you company, and that you found us, too.

LynnD, thanks for all the tips on saran wrap.

MEK, are you watching the Ryder Cup????

J/L, so, this ex-fiance...what's the deal? Inquiring minds want to know.

Mo, Good to see you in the nest this morning. Don't work too hard.

Tinka, I hope you are well very soon.

DonnaJean, I am so sorry you and Laurie have to go through the same ordeal again. I will keep all of you in my prayers.

I am off to usher for a children's play called Go Dog Go. Dogs & kids...should be fun. BBL

  23. Iteach, this is the ultimate conversation-starter topic! I wish there were more feedback here so far re: your 'favorite websites' question. Like our RECIPE blog a few months ago, I'd like to see this be one we could flag for return visits and continue to update with new finds. Come on OWLS, whose in?

I'll try to come back while watching the U of O football game to list a few faves. For now, here's my numero uno.....The SATELLITE SISTERS. These gals have truly become MY sister-friends for the past few years. They are 5 real sisters, all in different locations, with different careers and family situations. I love laughing and learning with them by listening to their podcasts on today's world events and their own lives, viewing the photos, reading their blogs, book and movie reviews, etc. So much fun!

Lately, I turn to a number of OBJECTIVE non-partisan websites designed to separate fact from fiction, during this political silly season. I'm amazed, not at the amount of bullsh*t and flat-out LIES out there, but of how many people choose to remain ignorant of the truth, when it's their future and that of their children at stake in today's choices.......but that's for another day or personal blogspace. I'd rather see what YOU find entertaining and informative.

    bbl~~

  25. Oh Whabby and Bon,

Thank you so much for those websites!!!

I had no idea those existed, I'm not very knowledgeable with what is going on!

I do visit a lot of teacher's websites. This summer I found so many that you give you FREE ideas and FREE worksheets to copy from.

My favorite free one is www.smithsrooms.com/back_to_school

I am hoping that in the next few years my room will look like hers.

  26. This is lame but Old Navy is having free shipping this weekend plus 20% off of everything!!!

Iteach...fabulous blog!!!! I know I am addicted to this blog, Myspace and a couple of other sites, because when I am on the road, it's painful not being able to get on the computer often and find out what's going on! Don't know what I would do without my laptop!!!!

    Good Canadian newsite:
    www.cbc.ca
(Thanks for asking, iteach! Our news is abit blah right now...there is a federal election happening to vote for a new {hopefully} Primeminister...it was called a couple of weeks ago and takes place next month...and not a lot of people seem to care that much or are all that interested. Very different from the US election that will be happening soon!)

Also, there is the current week's question and you can submit your own funny answer.

Flying through it looks like everyone is having a good day.

My sites I check everyday are:

Owls nest of course it is first!

    CNN.com
    msnbc.com
    Huffingtonpost.com

Mudflat.wordpress.com this site is from Alaska and they follow Alaskan politics and news and everyday life. I decided to check it out as I figured I would get more reliable information about how Alaskan's feel about Sarah Palin.

Factcheck.org is one of my favs

I also check ABC, CBS and NBC at least once a week.

See ya all later as I will be busy Mr. Lynn D is sick and driving crazy!

Tina Zona anymore curb hopping today? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  40. YAY for the Cubbies, Iteach!! Our U of O Ducks just got their #17-ranked butts handed to them by Boise State.

Some favorite websites, in no particular order (besides our beloved nest, of course):

*ABC.com Full Episode Player~~for commercial-free Brothers & Sisters, Boston Legal, Grey's Anatomy, Samantha Who, Ugly Betty, etc...all my faves on MY schedule.

*Too many major and former hometown newspapers, alumni news.

*Virtual Earth Live Search Satellite Bird's Eye Views (and Google Earth~~to virtually travel ANYWHERE)

*Google Maps (for directions, distance, time required, printable maps)

*Amazon.com (an others for specialized shopping)

*Martha Stewart Living & The Martha Blog (I know, I know---can't help myself)

    *Fidalgo Bay Coffee (the best!)

*KIXI: Livestream Music of the Big Band Era

*Space Needle 360* WebCam (when I'm homesick)

and to unwind the lies and/or 'spin': Annenberg Political FactCheck (aka FactCheck.org.

Can't wait to check out your favorites!

    ReplyDelete
  41. BonO I love that Full Episode Player, too!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I also get things through Amazon.com pretty often. I just purchased a birthday present for my brother, as a matter of fact.

    ReplyDelete
  43. shit...i forgot one:
    ho's.com lol~

lynnD~ I was on the freeway, and this semi was slowing down. so the car behind it slowed and i did too. I looked in my rear view mirror and the van behind me was going at full speed and the driver was looking to the left. Scared the shit outta me! All i could think of was....hell....Zona is going to die and it's all that woman's fault! :)~ she's lucky she didn't hit us......zona would have gotten pissed! :D

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi J/L! Post-game snack break time. Don't you love shopping Amazon? I do almost all Christmas shopping through them now. If I mall-shopped and mailed, the shipping would kill me! Amazon has NEVER disappointed me with pricing, shipping or timely trackable delivery.

speaking of Zona.....come out, come out, girl!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Bon- I have to agree with you about Amazon, we have used that site a lot in the past and we were never disappointed.

I do like my district's website. They have neat educational links for Philip to play "games" on.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Good for you, Iteach, takin' some 'me' time! Just saw your school district post. I love that I can pull up the site for my granddaughter's brand-new school and see what's happening, right down to book recommendations and what they have for breakfast & lunch.

Just checked my links to make sure they'd work for anyone who might want to try...
    lets try the fact-checker again~~

    FACT-CHECK

(If this doesn't work, I'll delete the post)

Yesterday, they exposed a number of McCain/Palin lies...today I see they're onto Obama, so you can see they ARE objective. You can submit your e-mail addy, and will automatically receive updates of "gotcha!'s!" as they happen.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Tina: I hope Zona was wearing Depends! LOL

Hmmm the Debates should be interesting just read that Obama and McCain have agreed to a less formal debate format so that they can respond to each other.

However the McCain camp insisted on a tightly regimented formal debate for Ms. Palin and Joe Biden. Biden said he did not care one way or another on the format.

Ok I have called my friend and middle daughter and we may have a first debate party!! We are now deciding on which phrases we expect to hear the most and then will have to take a shot of preferred booze if it is on our approved list. :) Let the games errrr, I mean debates begin.

    ReplyDelete
  48. OOOH, Lynn...Can I come? I'll BMOB! Dibs on "I'm ALWAYS against regulation....but you can count on ME to regulate those dirty bastards & fire 'em!" and "Lobbyists? Not in MY campaign or MY White House!"

    ReplyDelete
  49. Okay, I just watched an episode of GW that was totally scary!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Bonnie- We also do it for my stepdaughter's school. It helps hubby know what is going on so he can feel like he is right there with her.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Bonnie I signed up for factcheck.org

It was really good to see all the true facts. Both sides stretch the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Iteach~~Thanks again for this blog! It's been a while since I listened to my Satellite Sisters, and right now I'm listening to the latest Podcast and LOVING them...they've covered the market nonsense, the disasters (Ivan/trainwreck), Yankee Stadium's last days, etc, and just announced they're soliciting 'SatSis' listener input via e-mail for.........SHOPPING WEBSITES for the holidays, that they'll be posting. Now they're talking about how the View biotches treated McCain when he was on. You gals would all just love to laugh and cry with them. I just know it. They all have different points of view, argue, crack each other up. Plus I think you'd enjoy the links to all the other parts of their site. It's perfect to listen while 'doing whatever (or not) around the house. Always so topical yet fun.
(Now, they've moved on to talking about Alaska scenery and the 'First Dude'. Who knows what's up next!)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Bon'o~ thanks for the site....looks interesting....i'll sign up too~

  54. HI Everyone!!

I'm still alive here in Utah...despite a small car mishap..an almost car accident and a hell of a lot of stairs!!

I got sunburned today...imagine that!! Had to come to Utah to get some sun! ;)

TINA has been a total sweetheart and her family has been just great. I am almost over my shyness..course that'll probably happen on Monday when it's time to go home!!

Ok..now Tina has me using a laptop computer...and I am soooo confused. Maybe she is trying to kill me after all!! ;)

I hope you are all having the kind of evening I am, full of fun and adventure!! SWAK!!

  55. ITEACH: I have tried to limit my time on the computer in the last few months. I used to stay logged in all the time, but now I actually turn the computer off and it helps me to stay off of it....you know, that horrible minute it takes to load!! ;)

    Websites I like are:

    Owls Nest, of course.
    Myspace
    YouTube
    TMZ
    AZcentral.com
    CNNsports

I wish I could think of more, but dinner is ready and this laptop is goofy!!!

  56. HI Everybody! Congrats on first Scirish!! How is everyone today?

I have a very addictive personality, and I do get addicted to the internet (and stuff on it) really easily.

Right now though, I am addicted to getting steps in...I got 20,184 STEPS in today!!! wooo hooo. I am so excited. I never got over 20,000 before. :)

My weight loss is stuck right now at -18 though. :( Maybe tomorrow when I weight it will have gone down. I sure hope so!

I only lost one pound this week. *sigh*

Well, all, I hope everyone is doing really well today. I am working on getting my mom's stuff packed up for a yard sale, goodwill, or take to the new place. I will be there all day tomorrow too (if I can move..I am sooooo sore!).

Take care all. Sheesh..I am pooped.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Scirish, Your welcome. I hope you like it. Let me know what you think. I am starting to use the body measurement thing too. I don't keep my activity on there though because I am doing Virgin Health Miles and it uploads daily there.

  58. Sites I go to on the internet:

    Rosie.com
Postsecret (oohh tomorrow is SUNDAY..new secrets!! yay!)
    Found and orphan cameras
    fitday.com
    myalli.com
    virginhealthmiles.com
    yahoo
    gmail
    NIGHTOWLS BLOG...OF COURSE!
Occasionally, I go to Ross's blog.

  60. I just watched another great episode of GW! Dang season three is scary, holy cow!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Well, well, well....my first 69 on the blog!! Hmmmm, so this is what it feels like...all that ahhh and etc., that you all talk about every day!! It's not jogging my memory too much!!

TINA AND ZONA: Are you two behaving or having fun or both? I hope Tina didn't cook eggs for you for dinner tonight. I talked to them about noon and poor ZONA was starving! I had told her I thought TINA would be quietly waking her up this morning with a tray of breakfast, oj and flowers! TINK: You had better be very worried as I think your daughter is being lead astray!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. This has been so nice to have a night home by myself.

I did a lot of cleaning, ironing, and watching GW!

Is the Emmy show on tomorrow night?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Zona I can hardly wait until you see Tina do laundry! Bwahahahaha!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Dianne Congrats on your first blog 69er. :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. iteach, how did you watch another episode? Is this season three, or was the last season, season 3? I really like that show.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Obviously, I am not in bed yet..lol

    ReplyDelete
  67. J/L: I felt the same way about the computer being a friend after my husband passed away. I always think the computer kept me somewhat grounded.

Reading this blog is one of my biggest addictions. My bad habit is reading it on my phone all the time..that and emails. I can't respond but it is the first thing I turn on in the morning is my phone and the blog.

LYNND; I think that debate party sounds fun. We have football parties from time to time and we have a shot of schnapps (butterscotch) whenever the Bronocs score. There have been games that we have had nothing...so then we have to drink one for the other team!! :) What is the date for the Vice President debate?

DONNAJEAN: I am so glad Laurie came through her surgery so well and now she will just do it again in a couple of months!

I have been feeling kind of yucky this week and laying around and sleeping alot. I have felt better yesterday and today. We went to dinner tonight for Mr D's bday (on Monday). We went to a seafood place that takes off whatever per cent of the years you are on the dinner. I think some of the people there get there meal almost for free.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Iteach: I need to rent them, I didn't start watching fairly regularly until last season. I always missed it EVERY Friday too. 8pm is hard for me to catch it on Fridays for some reason!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yes, Dianne congrats on first 69!! I am off to bed for real this time. Take care and sweet dreams all. :) Bebbi

    ReplyDelete
  70. Good night, Bebbi!

Dianne That's a great way for the restaurant to help people celebrate their birthdays! Happy Birthday to Mr. Dianne!

    ReplyDelete
  71. J/L: It is a good way for the restaurant and they get a lot of business. Since my husband got 61%off...I treated!!

How are you doing? I know you are hearing from Custard from time to time but are you responding? Did you get the jewlery yet? :) I hope you are feeling somewhat better now although, I know it is still hard for you.

I have nobody to rib about the game tomorrow as we are playing New Orleans and I don't know anyone from there. I guess I will have to go and look and see who the Raiders, Seahawks and 49'ers are playing this week. BONO: We gave your team a player this week so maybe that will help.

I am so happy to "know" that ZONA took her Bronco shirt with her on this trip. I don't think Utah really knows much about football so she will be safe wearing it!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Dianne I seem to be in the angry stage now. He wrote me tonight and I did fire back an angry reply,

    ReplyDelete
  73. Dianne~~(Rams tomorrow) Thanks for sending us a player, but I think what we really need are more team physicians. :(

All this time you've been trying to entice me with a shirt?? You should have just mentioned the ButterShots! Heck, I'm there!!

Question, guys...You know I love Autumn, but there's still one more day of Summer and 10 days of September. My across-the-street neighbors started putting up their outdoor Halloween decorations today. Isn't it just a tad early?

    ReplyDelete
  74. BonO OMG! Yes, it is way too early for Hallowen decorations!

    ReplyDelete
  75. another LONG day for me!! goodness.

bono - YES, it is TOO early to be decorating for halloween!!

Dianne - LMAO at "cooking eggs"!! and congrats on your first 69!!

    Tina and Zona - :-)

Okay - I have another long day tomorrow - SO, I'm off to bed early..

GO BRONCOS!!! Watched our Rockies get beat in the 9th inning..

GO USA - (for the Ryder Cup!!!)

i hope everyone has an excellent Sunday!!!

  76. J/L~ i just found your post about the laundry! I'll have you know that I've done two loads and nothin'! mkay?~

Dianne_causing_trouble_from_Denver~ You are a naughty old woman! lol at googling nice! :D

    ReplyDelete
  77. BONO: Yes, it is too early for Halloween decorations. They oculd just put out some fall leaves or something. Why don't you "show them" and put up your Xmas decorations outside just for fun...then you won't have to do it when it gets cold! See if they notice!!! Nice to see we have a new "fan" for our Broncos...boy, that was easy! :)

J/L: I am glad to hear you are getting angry as it does feel better inside than being sad. I do hope you are feeling better.

  78. Dianne~~Problem is there aren't even any fall leaves yet! I see one vine maple just beginning to turn. Otherwise everythings still green (except the dry grass of course!).

Sweet dreams MEK, Tina/Zona, Bebbi, J/L, any other NiteOwls. Gotta be up for CBS Sunday Morning in 8 hrs. Where would we be without our rituals, eh?

  82. You little brat!!! I thought you were going to bed!! Well, at least I got the 69 today. Do you have some kind of alarm that goes off when a certain number is coming up on a march?

  90. J/L: I have PBS on and they are having a "doo wop" night of all the old singers of the 50's like the Shirells..they are singing Soldier Boy. I like to see how they look after all these years. Can you tell there isn't much on TV right now plus I like those songs from the "olden" days!

  91. TINA: Well, tell ZONA that she just hurt my feelings so I guess I will have to call Mr Zona again!! He is comforting!

  94. ITEACH - Great blog!! It really made me think. And I sooooo appreciate our conversation. It's ALWAYS a pleasure to talk to you....thanks for listening and understanding. :D Of course, the hubby would say that I need an intervention!! The sites that I visit most days are of course, myspace and the nest. I still really like Rosie's and I like checking out youtube for some mindless entertainment. I'm also a fan of most of the "reality" shows on Bravo, so I go to their site too.

I hope everyone has a great Sunday!!!

Taking the kids to church, then taking Sam out shopping for a dress for the Homecoming Dance next weekend!!! Oh, and I guess I better get a little something for MR. JODI.....our wedding anniversary is on Tuesday. 19 years!!!
