Bark at the Moon

By Lois Lane AKA No_Newz

Darla

Well this blog has gone to the dogs. Why? Zona's fault. She sent me a message at MySpace saying how much my dog Darla looked like her beloved Remmy. When you find that perfect companion, you are hooked for life.

I have to be honest, I've always been a cat person. They are a lot like me, self-sufficient animal, attention whores when they want to be. Hidden when they choose to avoid certain people. Loving to a select few. Love their afternoon naps. Hissy and pissy when things are not going their way. I've just described myself and my cat in one paragraph.

Dogs are fickle. They give their love to anyone with a hot dog in hand. Well, my dogs do anyhow. I love my dogs, but they are best friends with whomever has the food. Plus, they are some stinky mofos! Fresh out of the bath every single time, they hop around three-legged as if they are about to lose control of their bladders. I fall for their trick every time. What they really want is to go outside, find a stank pile, and rub their dumb bodies all up in it.

My cat Chip is about the cleanest, best smelling creature alive. He wouldn't be caught wasting any of his nine lives rolling in what can only be described as deer shit. Really? Deer poo? How in the heck did a deer get in my yard and crap? (Sorry, my mind wandered.)

Chip's Light Switch Trick 2

People who know my cat Chip say he is dog-like, therefore, I am really a dog person. I don't know if that's true. Sure Chip will fetch a ball and bring it back. He does other tricks, like turning off the lights, turning on the bathroom faucet for a drink, and answering back when I talk to him? Oh yeah, he sure does. I should get video of this since so many people video tape their dogs saying, "I love you."

Chip says, "Mama, hello and no." He currently sounds like he is working on I love you., likely in an effort to not be upstaged by any dogs.

Okay, knock it off. I see you rolling your eyes at the screen! He really does talk. He is the smartest cat on the planet.

Anyhow, Darla and Daisy, named after Darla on The Little Rascals, and Daisy Duke, came into our lives because some woman got busted for backyard breeding. She had nearly 600 animals in all.

Daisy dressed and playing mommy

We went to the shelter, looked in this cage, and simultaneously went, "Awwwww!" Mr. Lane was looking at a min-pin, and I was looking at a long-haired doxie. Neither of us could talk the other out of their dog of choice. Since they were in a cage together, we figured, they get along well enough, we should adopt both.

We later found out that they were put together because the shelter was limited on space. Sure, they like each other. In fact I would say perhaps they are life partners. Don't you roll your eyes, again. They cuddle up together to sleep. They lick each other. They even hump each other's faces?

Oh yes, they do. And let me tell you it is a real K-9-69 situation.

  2. Lois loved your blog! How in the heck did you get the dog dressed up? Mine refuse! Kind of hard to argue with big dogs if they say no they mean no!

Does Chip flush the toilet? I had a cat named feather when I was a teenager that would pee in the toilet and occasionally she would pull the lever and flush to! I am not crazy! My brother was the one who caught the crazy calico doing it!

What is it about dogs and rolling through vile and disgusting crap? Ours just love a dead and rotting animal carcass to roll all over.

DonnaHart I hope all of the trials you are going throught right now pass soon! Thinking about you!

Shirley and bear and Mary I hate this time of year too. Not enough sunlight at all! Even just daylight. Sending you all hugs!

  4. Morning Ibb! Boy it sure seems we have quite a few owls who have been sick! Everybody putting a big bag of vitamin C on the table.

  5. LL/NN...Your blog sure gave me a chuckle! I have a Yorkie, a Tabby and an American Bobtail. The Yorkie (Zack) seems to think he is king of the house. The other day he jumped up on the bed where the Tabby (Zoe)was reclining. He sat next to her and extended his paw in an imperial manner. She complied with the Emperor's request and proceeded to wash it.

The American Bob-Tail is very dog-like. He will follow you from room to room and hates to be alone. He is the clutziest cat EVER!! Which may be due, in part, to his gignormous paws. He doesn't daintily play string...He plays thud...

  6. Happy Monday Owls.

LynnD, Congrats on #1. I have heard of cats who flush the toilet and I tried to teach our cat to do that, but he was having none of it. I would have been happy to flush for him if he would even pee/poop in the toilet, but that wasn't going to happen either.

IBB, I know what you mean about your pets being your kids.

Scirish, good to see you. I hope those shots are working for you by now.

  7. NN/LL, I great blog. I think you described me in your second paragraph, too. We always had cats when I was growing up, but my Hubby was definitely a dog person.

A friend of ours knew a family who was abusing their cocker spaniel and my Hubby 'convinced' them to give us the dog...well strong-armed really. He told them he would report them. We had that dog for 17 years.

He really bonded with our youngest son the most, but you are right, if Todd wasn't around, he 'loved' anyone with the food.

  8. Sacbarb...My SO wanted to train the cats to use the toilet, but I convinced him otherwise. I really didn't want to stand in line until the cats got done...

  9. So, As most of you know I am staying in SD with my grand dog while my son and DIL are on a cruise. Yesterday was the first time I left him when I went to Church. When I got home, we went for a little walk so he could pee and all was well, or so I thought. About an hour later, I caught him peeing in the middle of the hall and he looked at me like "that will teach you to leave me!"

This is a dog that stays inside all day while his parents work, so I know it was deliberate. He was aloof (if that's possible for a dog) the whole day. Today is better. I think I've learned my lesson.

  10. Scirish, LOL We had two bathrooms, so there wouldn't have been a line.

  11. Good morning Scrishy and Sacbarb!

    LOL at your stories!

Sacbarb he was definately teaching you a lesson! ROFLMAO

My friend had a kitten who was fascinated by the bath tub. One day she heard the shower running and then heard her husband hollering for her in a somewhat cranky voice. She headed downstairs to the bathroom to see what his problem was.

She opened the door to holler at him and she spotted the kitten sitting on the edge of the tub peering into the shower. She asked her hubby what do you want? Get the damn cat out of here it keeps staring at me when I am showering and it creeping me out!!

LMAO he was sure the cat was investigating all his private parts!

  12. Good morning everyone! I'm glad everyone is sharing their pet stories. I love reading about animals and their people.

I became so attached to Chip because he and I have a crazy and long history. Should you ever want to read a long yet amazing story, email me and I'll send it to you. nonewz_1972@yahoo.com

Lynn_D, congratulations for being the #1 hooter! My daughter dresses the dogs and cats up. They are patient with her.

Barb, I'm glad you were able to get the dog out of that situation. I can't understand people being mean to an animal.

Scirish, 6 and 9 in my book works! But you better check with Zack, he's the REAL boss. :)

Ya know Lynn, he is pretty lucky. If my cat sees a "fuzzy ball" being dangled in his general direction, he jumps up and bites it! LOL!

  17. I see the nest is empty again. I think I am arriving at the wrong time or else I am chasing all the other owls away. Hmmmm

Good Morning Lynn, I think you still hold the record for the most 'firsts'. I think you get a medal at the "500" party.

Good Morning Ibebold, you were almost first, Scirish, SacBarb and of course our author of the day Lois.

  19. Lois - I loved your blog and I am going to enjoy all the pet stories as they come in today. The ones so far have surely put a smile on my face. I can't decide whether I am a dog or cat person. I have always had both and couldn't live without either. I also had bunny rabbits for years. I love them because they are so quiet, soft and cuddly. I won't bore the blog with stories of my perfect Tango, Tia and kitty cat Teddy. I have been doing that for a year, showing off their pictures every chance I can get. However, if you want to compete in the "most clever dog" catetory, Lois I can only ask "Can your dog write a blog?" Mine can. Check October 14. VIG calls my baby "Tia, the blog writing dog".

I must eat breakfast. I will be back later.

Zona and VIG I hope you are feeling better today.

  24. I am a dog person. Always have been. Long story on the reason why I dont care to have a cats- 2 stories actually.

That said, my beloved dog is a total food whore and would love anyone with food. She also loves anyone without food if they throw a ball!

Pepper does not do the nasty roll in shit thing. She avoids it and for that I am grateful. She sniffs and then walks away from anything stanky. Bless her little heart! She also does not eat crap like some dogs. Again, lucky us!

    ReplyDelete
  25. By the way- I thought I would use my actual picture for awhile, what do you think?????????????

    ReplyDelete
  26. Goldie, you are one hot piece of ass in that photo. Makes me think about batting for the other team. ;)

I wish my dogs weren't stank rollers.

Speaking of dogs who eat crap... both of mine do, but only cat crap.

I saw a piece on the floor one day. Noticed it looked like an Almond Rocca. Thankfully I've outgrown picking up candy off of the floor and eating it!

When the laundry room door is open, and the litter box isn't being guarded, the dogs think it is time for the buffet.

    *GAG*

Okay, really going to get back to work. Hugs all around!!

  28. Good Morning, Everyone! Lynn, posting at 5:57 am PST?? You go, girl!

Love the blog and pics, Lois. I, too, am both a dog and cat person, as evidenced by all my MS photos/videos of my Mick & Willa, and my daughter's Ellie Mae, Bear and their litter of eleven, born last Spring.

Last week I received a video clip from Britain's Got Talent (Simon's precursor to American Idol). It reminded me so of Zona & Nikki, I just HAD to forward it to her. Since she inspired Lois's blog, and since we've ALL 'gone to the dogs' today, here it is if you'd like to watch:

KATE & GIN, aka ZONA & NIKKI

See you later today...DENNY, DENNY CRANE!

  29. Goldie, I have tried cats a few times. I love them, but can't get past the thought that they climb on kitchen counters and tables. I have several friends who have them, so I enjoy theirs in THEIR homes!
The last cat I had jumped in the back seat of my jeep while I was unpacking stuff and demolished my Taco Bell food!
Our Choc. Lab is our baby. She started out being MY dog, but she switched sides to Mr Mary. They are sickly in love lol!! I told Mr Mary that HE never look at ME like that lol!!!

    Lynn d,congrats on first.

IBB, congrats on the big 2nd!!!!

Nonewz~ I loved your blog. Some talented tabby!!

SacBarb! Hi girl! Yup, some dogs will do that. I think doggie-do-smell is easier to get rid of then kitty-do-smell. Now if I could just get rid of a Mr Mary has been hunting and smoking smell........

    ReplyDelete
  30. Lol @ lois

Thank you - I did pose, didn't you recognize the tassles that sacbarb and the blog buddies sent me???

Mary, I was 9 months pregnant, sick as a dog (morning sickness 24/7 for 9 months!) and sitting inside at a party due to close proximity of bathroom. Everyone outside playing volleyball, etc and the cat was walking across the counters licking the spoons used to stir the food in the crockpots, licking lids of containers, etc.
I told Mr. Goldie and eldest son not to touch the food when they came in. I was icky before this happened- I was puking my guts up after seeing that.

Story 2- minding my own businees babysitting. 2 siamese cats which had eyed me for hours and hours. At Midnight, I am watching tv, cats on other end of sofa and suddenly without warning- I have a siamese cat attached to my head! Little f***er got kicked down to the basement (my only case of animal abuse ever) and I told the people never to call me again to babysit! Kids were great, cats were the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Goldie....ewwwww...We trained our cats when they were kittens that the counter and table were off limits...It's amazing what a squirt bottle will do..

    ReplyDelete
  32. Goldie~Maybe the cats we met weren't crazy about us either lol!!!

I will be back later. I have my jeep warming up for a trip to town. I love my remote starter! It is snowing and 34 degrees.

  33. Goldie/Mary~~Because I'd LOVE to have you come visit some day, I just have to say.....Mick & Willa are pre-teens I've had since they were newborns, and neither of them have ever set paw on tables or counters! Could be because they REFUSE to eat anything other than Meow Mix and the occasional tin of Friskies. Fear not!

  34. Bono~ I'm there lol! I didn't intend on licking you counter tops any way hee hee!!

  35. Great blog Lois Lane. My favorite stories are about four legged critters.
My Pekingese, Cinnamon always runs and hides under my bed when it is bath time. After her bath she runs from the guest bathroom to my bathroom and sits waiting for me to blow dry her fur. She loves to play with balls that are the same size as her and push them all over the yard. She gets pissed off if the ball gets into a corner and she growls at it as she pulls it out with her front paws. When she isn't playing ball then she is making music with her squeaky toys. When she is tired of making music then she will lick on her toys for hours. I have no idea why she does this. That is about her only odd characteristic. She knows my routine and if I put on my shoes then she runs to the front door ready to go too. Many times I do take her and drop her off at the grandparents home. She flies through my parents front door and grabs a toy in her mouth and then runs with it to the back door. She knows that toys are not allowed outside but she always tries to push the rules. Spoiled? Ahh, perhaps! :0)

  36. Happy Monday hooters!

Hope everyone had a nice weekend!

Lynn D congrats on first today! :)

No Newz, I love your blog today! Your doggies are so adorable, it makes me want to get another!

We had doxies when I was a kid. Two black/brown standard sized (had them at different times), and one brown mini.

Right now, we have a kitty, Paula, and an African Grey parrot named Poe. They were lucky enough to meet some of the blog buddies at our annual bbq in August.

Paula had surgery this past Thursday. She has had a cyst for years, it opened up last week and had to be removed. She did well through her operation and now has a Frankenstein scar on her left side.

Barb that is so awesome you rescued the lucky doggy and gave him a wonderful home! :)

I found out something interesting yesterday. One of my mom's cousins is doing a family tree, and discovered that we are related to Audrey Hepburn!

I have a few days of blogs to catch up on, so will check back later!

    Have a wonderful day!

  37. Hi everybody! I hope everyone had a great Monday.

    Congrats on first Lynn D.

Great Blog, Lois! I love all the stories too. I love my two beebees (said like Sharon on BB, if you know who that is). I had a wonderful cat named Simba. He was so awesome but he got cardiomyopathy when he was about 5 years old. I had to put him down but I some awesome happy memories of that cat. He was too wonderful. That will probably be the last cat I ever have because A) Mr. Bebbi doesn't like cats B) No cat could be better than him in my eyes.

I will bbl. I MUST get 8,000 steps today and I am only at 5373. So I bundle up and head out to walk in the dark and the cold.

    BBl.

  38. HI EVERYONE: SCIRISH I hope you are feeling better, and ZONA & VIG you better be on your couches resting.
LL, Thank you for sharing your four legged kids with us. I love animal tales.

I have had many felines in my house over the years. I have been blessed with cats who are/were very loving, devoted and quite tidy when it comes to their etiquette. Some have been very quiet and some definitely made their presence known. My Clancy used to fetch just like a dog. All, with the exception of 3 sibling kittens, have been strays or surrendered at the veterinary hospital.

Two of our dogs were strays, one a Labrador rescue, and the latest two belonged to a friend who died. Again, all great pets. I find it puzzling though that none of them would ever fetch. I have always loved all of my pets and I still become nostalgic about all of them, but my heart still breaks over losing Molly, our lab rescue dog. She used to look at me as though she knew my soul.

The amazon parrots are very loud at times. Just ask SLIN when we are on the phone and she tells me "I can hear the bird more than I hear you". Holly starts laughing when I am laughing and gets the other two squawking.

Now for African Greys. They are the smartest birds in the world. An African Grey used to live at the veterinary hospital and Edith was so talented. She could repeat all sorts of sounds and talk up a storm. She was also a little minx. She went through a streak where every time one of the hospital cats went to eat out of their bowl she would swoop down to the bowl and scare them away.

LYNN, Wouldn't it be great if they all used the toilet and flushed. No litter boxes!

IBEBOLD, I am glad you are well again.

SACBARB, A friend of mine got a dog through abuse. The cowboy living next to her used to get mad at his cattle dog and open the wood bin and throw him in. Georgette finally got him to relinquish the dog. And.... I am glad you learned your lesson over the weekend.LOL

LL, There is nothing like the "Snack Bar" Do you suppose it is like the sandwich truck pulling up to the workplace for people?

    BONO, Great video!

GOLDIE, Love your picture. Talk about an hour glass figure and you must stay very warm in the winter with all of that hair on your body :).

    ReplyDelete
  39. Good Afternoon Everyone....Can you believe it...it is 74 and sunny here and I am listening to Christmas carols on the radio!! I am loving it. MARY/MI: You need to drive that jeep over here and stay with me for a few days and warm up and see a winning team play too. I had to laugh at your statement yesterday about the Detroit Lions. I saw the coach on the TV and he was very mad and told the media to go on the street and find him some new players! We WON yesterday (sorry Sandie) and now next week is a big week for us...the OAKLAND RAIDERS come to Denver to play. When that happens the city calls it "Raider Week".

I hope all that are sick get better soon. ZONA and VIG: are you both resting and not talking and sleeping?

I went to get set up with my new Hospice volunteer job since the other one closed down. It is hard to change but it looks like I will start out with my same patients, so that is good.

LL: Nice blog. I do not have pets but I have 3 granddogs and 1 grandcat from my children. I am allergic to cats and also afraid of them. It seems like they always want to hop on me although, my son's cat stays away and I have no allergy there--strange.

    MARY/MI: FROM AREA 51

I see you were commenting on having the 69 all by yourself...boy, you must be double-jointed or something! :)

We have an HOA meeting tonight so I am going to try and get out of fixing dinner...we shall see!

TINA: I received the mail today..Thank you. I guess I will always remember what race car driver you like now!

  40. Cats-

To me they look good from a far distance.

Hubby says no dogs at all, but I want one once my daughter is potty trained. Then I might wait a couple of years, because I would like to be poop free for a little bit.

  41. Happy Monday to all!

It has been several days since I last posted, so many things have happened in our life.

First off, though, I have to say Great Blog to Lois!

I too, was always a cat person, but since we had to put our last kittie to sleep several years ago, Miss Laurie and I have been petless (is that a word)?

Some of you who were on the other Blog, know that I was looking to find a shelter/rescue doggie for Laurie and myself. I needed to wait until I knew for sure that Laurie was healthy enough, no more immediate surgeries, etc.

Well, the time came, and Olive came into our lives last Friday!! (her picture is my Avatar)

We found her at the Sonoma County Humane Society, and she is just the sweetest little doggie! They say a Poodle/Mix. I am thinking maybe Poodle/Maltese, but no one knows for sure. She is about 12 lbs, and a bit "Scraggelly" at the moment, but we love her all the more!

She definitely needs a "Spa Day", and that will come next Tuesday, because we needed to wait 10 days, due to her recent spaying.

She follows me everywhere in the house, I cannot be out of her sight, which is adorable, but I want her to soon become comfortable and know that she is safe and OK, and can be in another room, I am sure that will happen.

She is a year old, and was a Shelter/Transfer from the Monterey, CA area. So, we do not much history on her. I think (thanks to Lin) that she must have been raised by the "lady of the house", and that's why she is so attached already to me.

Miss Laurie wants so much to have Olive come to her and be with her. I told Laurie to be patient, that time will come. But to tell Laurie to be patient, is, well an oxymoron!!!

OK, enough of me rambling on & on about the new addition to our family! Believe me, I will be talking about Olive alot in the days to come!

I have read most of the Blogs last week, and the comments, but, I am so sorry to say, my #2 pencil broke, and I didn't take notes!

I want to send to everyone who needs it, some love, encouragement and hugs!!! I know that some serious things are happening with some of our "Owl Sisters", & their families, and I want you to know that I am with you in spirit. XOXOXO (((HUGS)))

I hope to be able to be back in normal posting fashion soon, and can actually "speak" to you all personally!

I hope everyone has an enjoyable afternoon/evening, and go hug your dog, cat, kids, husband, partner, or even the neighbor!!!!

    Peace and Love to All,
    and NO on H8!!!
Donna Jean, Laurie Elizabeth & Olive

  42. LynnD Congrats on #1. This is becoming quite a comptition between you and scirish. How fun!

Lois/NoNewz I loved your blog! LMAO @ the face humping! I've already written about my cat Tater who made a call one night. I used to be licensed by the city to have 40 cats. Now I only have 2 old kitties left. I also used to have a couple of dobermans but I think by the numbers, I'd probably have to say I'm more of a cat person. When my kids were young, we also had a couple of hamsters and my daughter had a rat. As a teen, my son had tarantualas. Eeeewww!!! I had nothing to do with them and wasn't wild about their food, crickets, that would escape and be hopping around the house.

  43. J/Lin
Wow, I didn't know that you had owned Dobermans. I had two. They are such an awesome breed.

    Bebbi
    OMG 8000 steps.Very impressive.

  44. Congrats on 1st Lynn D!

Congrats on your new dog Donna Jean!

Hello to IBB, Scirish, Sacbarb, Tinka, Goldie, Bon'O, Mary, Dreama, EBJ, Dreama, Lani, Dianne, Iteach and Just Lin.

Thanks for sharing your pets with everyone Lois. I have never been a pet owner and with my fear of animals it doesn't look like I ever will. I don't hate them or want them harmed, I just don't want them anywhere near me. Sorry, I know I am in the minority here.

  45. Where is my girlfriend Carol at? :)

  46. Shirley
Hey, I was thinking about you today and wondering how you were doing. Great to see ya!

    ReplyDelete
  47. SHIRLEY~ Sweetie, I know just how you feel. I felt like that most of my childhood. I was raised by my Grandmother, who had terrible allergies, so I was never able to have any kind of pet unless it was a goldfish!

That is kind of odd, because, as a little girl, I remember our family having Cocker Spaniels, at least three at different times, all named Taffy! Maybe my Grandma just used that allergy thing as an excuse, because she didn't want to take care of any more animals!

Anyway, I also was very afraid of dogs. The little ones were "ankle biters", and the big ones could attack you!!!

It took me a very long time to finally get the courage to get a pet.

My first real pet was after I was married, and my husband Larry and I found a darling stray kitten, and that little cat certainly did have nine lives. I think in a blog a long time ago I told my story about Siggie (or Sigmound, his proper name). After Siggie, we got several more kitties. Francie, Molly, Zach and finally Romeo. They all have very interesting stories, but I won't bore you with all that!

Anyway, dear Shirley, I so understand, and please do not apologize for your feelings. Maybe some day a special little friend will find you, and your fears will be gone.

If not, those Tetra Fish (Chinese fighting fish) are gorgeous, they come in so many colors and you can only have one in a bowl, as they will kill each other!

They look beautiful in a bowl with colored marbles on the bottom, and you can even grow certain plants in the bowl, and the Tetra's love it!

    Bye!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Dreama Dobermans are excellent dogs! Very smart, very loyal, and excellent family dogs.

Shirley You probably never had pets in your household when you were young so they seem unpredictable and foreign to you. Pets can really be great company and comfort.

Goldie Siamese cats can have an attitude and every once in a while there is one that's a bit nuts. Sorry you had to meet that one.

I had better slow down as there are still more than five weeks to keep this spirit going. I can't help it, I just love Christmas.

Lois - I loved how your blog brought out so many pets stories. I have read them all. There are too many to comment on but I must congratulate Donna Jean and Laurie on getting a new puppy. What a lucky dog to find a home like yours.

It's early but I think I will get in bed and watch "The Santa Claus" movie. Have a great night everyone. See you all tomorrow.
    Love, Tinka

VIG and ZONA - I hope you are feeling better tomorrow.

  52. I had a half Siamese cat years ago. It was a tomcat. That cat enjoyed going under my sofa, sneeking over to my guests ankles and then swatting the bedickens out of their bare ankles. I lived in a second story apartment at that time and every time I would open up the balcony doors that cat would hunch down, wiggle its tail, stare at me and give me that look like he was going to jump from the second floor. I was always a bundle of raw nerves wondering what he might do next. That cat was the same one that managed to open the lid of my bottom aquarium and eat my Oscar fish. Perhaps he was angry with me for having him neutered. I never was good at figuring out the personalities of cats,... just dogs.

My mom does not like pets either. That is why I don't have one.

Many yrs ago when my Dad's mom passed away, he was very depressed, my mom did not know what to do, so my brother suggested a puppy. She was not having it at all. My brother told her that if it did not work out he would keep it... So we got a Lhasa Aspo and my SIL named her Shiki. My mother was never thrilled, but my dad smiled again. so she agreed. We only had Shiki a couple of months when my dad had a dream that my grandmother spoke to him thru Shiki in his dream.. That sealed the deal. We had her for 17yrs, my dad and I loved her dearly. I know my mom liked her, just don't think she ever loved her.

We never got another pet, as my mom swore never again....

  65. Dreama - Thanks! I made it to 9,503 steps today. The dogs loved getting their sweaters on (I knitted one of them special for my Bandie (my male Pom) a few years ago. They looks so cute! And Chloe had on her orange Tennessee Sweater. Very charming. She looks like a little monkey in it. :)

Well, I am ppooooped. Have a great night all and sweet dreams.

  68. Typo..that should have been Tinkatia. That's what I get for having a TV next to my computer and multitasking.
Bebbi you knitted a dog sweater. I am impressed. I won't even make my own dinner. It's TV dinners or go out to eat.
