State Quarters

by EBJ

One day, back in 1998, I was in Walgreens Drug Store. Something caught my eye on one of the shelves, a large, flat box that said "State Quarter Collection".

I picked up a box and was surprised to read that each year from 1999 to 2008, the U.S. Mint would release quarters by state. They would release 5 quarters per year, in the order they were admitted to the union.

The quarters would be specially designed and have a special meaning for that particular state. When the California quarter was being designed, they had a web site that you could go to and vote on designs that had been submitted. I think Arnold had the final say, however.

Well, I picked up several boxes and bought them, thinking they would make great Christmas gifts.

When 1999 arrived, I started looking for the very first quarter, Delaware. It took forever to get one. The quarters were released about every 10 weeks or so, and I would always be on the lookout.

So today, the map is still not complete! My most recent find was a couple weeks ago, I got a Wyoming, from 2007.

These days, thanx to the debit card, neither me nor MR. EBJ pay with cash too often, so we don't get a lot of change or quarters.

When I do get quarters, I always look! I have asked cashiers if I can check their quarters or traded people if they have one I need.

I still need:

2006 North Dakota

2007 Montana, Washington, Idaho, Utah

2008 Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona

I gave MR. EBJ a quarter map shortly after we started dating, and he is missing:

2007 Montana, Wyoming

2008 Hawaii, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona

Click Here for the web site where you can see each quarter in detail.

Does anyone else in the nest collect the state quarters? If you do, have you gotten all of them?

  2. WOOandHOO! Eat some extra protein and get first! :D

EBJ: Mr Z collects the state quarters. He's like a kid when he gets a new one. I don't know if he has them all..but he's got to be close. I'll check and see if he has any extras of the ones you need, kay?

Have you seen the colorized sets? Walgreens had them for sale at Christmas and we bought a couple. They're pretty cool.

    Collecting..sometimes I think it's our middle name! ;)

  5. Okay - I know Shirley is dieing to know this..

The hole is complete - and the trenches are dug..

Next week the plumber comes -

there are tons of steps before we even get to "filling the hole" - and I'm sure it will take a while to do that - cuz it's done with your basic garden hose!!

Rained forever last night - so my backyard is basically a mud bath!!

I'm off to walk the dogs... (no dog park again - I'm taking a break from there and getting my own exercise)..

  6. My nephew and my Dad collected the state quarters..(Actually, It was my Dads idea and I think he enjoyed as much, if not more than my nephew)I'm pretty sure they got them all. I'll have to ask.

I have a HUGE change jar....There has to be some in there!

  11. Morning Glories!

    Yay Zona got first!

EBJ thought about collecting the quarter but generally need them for shopping! LOL

I will check my coin jar and see if I have a WA state quarter somewhere. Bet I do. If I find one it is yours.

Mary very thought provoking blog yesterday. It was a sad commentary on our history and even sadder that you lost a friend in that war. I lost an Uncle and his body has never been found.

I have been busy doing end of month paperwork. Have more to tackle today.

    Luvs ya all!

  15. Mek..How big is the pool gonna be? We have a smallish above ground one and it didn't take nearly as long as I expected when we first filled it. However, believe it or not, there is a service that will come and do it for you. I looked into it when we first got the pool, thinking they would fill it with warm water...nope! Don't know why anyone would pay for cold water, especially since we get a one-time abatement from the water company for pools. You might want to check to see if your city/town has that. You read the meter before and after and fill out a form with the readings and the size of your pool and you get a reduction for the cost of the water and of course, they don't count that water as going down the sewer, so you don't get charged for that!

  18. Scirish - our pool is a decorative shape - and is 26ft by 14ft (at it's widest)....

one of our neighbors thought that a huge water tank would come - but that is not the case...

we are already looking in to seeing about what the water company can do for us..

okay - I really am going on that walk now...

  25. My 'fur babies' are fed. I just remembered this is the day of the week that I take my 'bone' pill. I can't eat or drink anything but water for at least a half hour. I should look into the once a month pill that Sally Fields advertising for strengthening bones.

Zona - I love to see you first on the blog. Then I know you are up and well. You said it will be 116 degrees this weekend. I really think you should live here for the summer months.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Mek - Have fun with your pool. I know you will love it. We had one all the years the kids lived at home. We have wonderful memories. Now I just have a Hot Tub which is not as much fun but useful for arthritis.

    ReplyDelete
  27. East Bay J - Sorry I can't help you find the quarters. I think they put one out for each province here but since we have only 10 provinces plus the Northwest Territories it isn't much of a collection game.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Zona - We do come from the same family. There is very little that I don't collect. Sometimes (years from now I hope) my family will have one huge garage sale.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Scirish - It takes a few hours just to fill my Hot Tub. I can't remember back to when we filled the swimming pool. I think it took a couple of days. Of course that was filling it with an ordinary hose. There are better ways I know.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I will be baking and packing today. We will leave for the Trout Farm early tomorrow morning. I won't have Internet. We will be back Monday. Have a great weekend everyone.

Zona - Check your rice cakes before you eat them. If you need protein to be first on the blog, leave a piece of cheese by you bed. LOL ((((Hugs))))

    ReplyDelete
  31. Zona - LOL - yes, first the digger - now the piper!!
    :-)
    love it!!

Tinka - we have a hot tub also - and yes, it's GREAT on those sore muscles!!!

cpgem - I am really NOT a morning person either - but in order to survive the heat - you MUST get out and about extremely early!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Tinka - safe travels.. what are you baking today?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Good morning!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEAR!!! A big "bear" hug (((((HUG)))) for you! :)

Congrats on 1st today Zona! See what eating the little bugs did? You are energized!

Scirish I can relate, having my cawfee now!

We have a big jar of quarters, so if anyone who collects has a request, let me know and I can see what we have.

I must go finish reading Area 51 from yesterday so I will be back!

Hope everyone has a nice day today!

  34. Mek - I am going to bake pies - 2 apple and 1 strawberry. I love strawberry pie. I bake the pie shell. Cool it. Fill it with fresh strawberries and then cover it with a sauce made with strawberries, sugar and corn starch. Cook until thick. Pour it over the strawberries and cool until it sets. Cover with whipping cream. I have one piece and I have reached my WW points for the day. Once in a while it is worth.
I use Granny Smith apples for apple pies. I think they are the best.
Sorry I didn't mean to turn this into a recipe comment.

  35. EBJ - Congrats on 69. You deserve it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I must get working. See you later.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Zona, not sure what the colorized set looks like, can you post a pic of it?

Tinka have a fun weekend! Here is a dumb question, are you going to a real trout farm? Are you taking the furbabies?

MEK I think the next step is putting in the plumbing, then the tons of rebar.

I think our pool took about 9 weeks from start to finish. It was a little over the estimate of 7-8 weeks, as most of the work is contracted out and sometimes people don't show up when you expect them.

I remember being very frustrated when the crew didn't show up when they were supposed to, or came when I didn't know they were coming.

Most pool companies use subcontractors, in fact around here there is only 1 co. that does all their own work. They are much more expensive than the others!

Gotta run to the post office! Well actually I'm going to drive haha!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow! I've spent most of this morning acknowledging birthday wishes! Bonacci, Zona, Tink, MEK, Carol, and EBJ: THANK YOU SO MUCH!

    ReplyDelete
  39. See, Zona? Not speechless any more! I even SHOUTED that Birthday thank-you!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Judy: I used to collect Canadian coins as a teenager... loved doing it! No American coins in my collection, though.

    ReplyDelete
  41. East Bay J - There is no such thing as a dumb question. Yes our family trout farm is real. It consists of 37 acres of trees and 3 lakes. There is a log cabin, a trailer and a 5th wheel there.
The lakes are stocked with trout that my son and his father raise from little fry. They grow them, harvest them and sell them to restaurants etc. when they are about a pound. They ship them to Calgary and Vancouver (on ice). They are very successful as it is the largest trout farm on the West Coast. I personally think they work too hard but they enjoy it so I don't have much say. I will try and remember to take a picture and upload it. It is very quiet and peaceful there, a lovely retreat from the city.

  42. I can't get on myspace this morning. Is anyone else having this problem or is it just my site?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Whabbear the birthday boy - I collected quarters for a while but I got frustrated as I kept finding the same ones. I do have a collection of old silver dollars, 50 and 25 cent coins that are older than 1968. That's when they stopped putting real silver in the coins.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Zona Congrats on being numero uno. Did you do something to Tina to keep her away?

EBJ I used to help one of the vets I work for collect quarters since she was collecting for herself and her elderly mother. I just looked in my wallet and I have Utah and Wyoming. I will gladly send them to you if you like.

Bear Happy Birthday! I hope you have a great day! I sent you some eye candy on MS. :)

Bonacci Bear is one of my "friends" on MS and I got notification on my home page that his birthday was coming up today.

  49. Years ago, I worked for the gas company in SoCal. I could not believe some of the old stamps that people would suddenly use to send in their payment. I started collecting stamps then. I only did it during the 1 1/2 yrs I worked there, but I got some really old and interesting ones. I still have that collection. My oldest ones come out in 1893.

    ReplyDelete
  50. That would be "came out in 1890".

  51. Happy Birthday Whabby!! The very best to you!

Zona, I can't believe you beat oyt Tina this morning! Congrats! LMAO on "it won't take long to fill MEKs hole!

Tinka, I loved reading your recipes. I never remember what type of apples to use. Mr Mary likes tart ones.

MEK, did you get that walk in yet?

Carol, I hate getting up early too. I am a for real "night owl" lol!

Tink, the Trout pond sounds wonderful! I love Michigan's "brookies". Have a great week end with your family!

LynnD,How sad that they never found your Uncle. I can't imagine the pain that caused his family!

My niece Jaimie & I are planning a train tour through Canada. We will be flying to Oregon to start. I am wondering if any of my nesters will be on our route. I don't have an agenda yet on the trains stops.

  53. Good afternoon everyone.
EBJ - I will print your list and keep a lookout for your missing coins.
ZONA - I wish someone in my house would collect coins rather than broken phones from the 50's, broken computers, rusty paint cans etc.

MEK - make sure the plumber is the real deal....If you don't see a butt crack...

I hope everyone has a great day. I am having mouse problems....having a hard time controlling it...maybe needs a new battery.

  56. Just_Lin; Thank you for the birthday notification info. I have connected with many owls on MS when I recognize a name. I will have to stalk Whab today.

Maybe I don't like my pool because I don't have a pool guy. Or I'm the pool guy. Do you all have pool guys?

I start work at midnight 4-5 nights a week and finish up around 6-7 pm. Am I an early bird or a night owl?

  57. Mary/MI~~I read your touching Viet Nam blog from yesterday, but didn't get back to post. Maybe later?

Here's a glimpse at my day so far~~
    *Fast since 9pm--was up 'til 1 a.m.

*Up @ the crack to do the pre-Dr. visit 'every-crook-and-nanny' personal hygiene routine.

    *COMPLETE (yeah, that one)Physical.

    *Blood/labwork & tetanus shot.

*App'ts made for mammogram and colonoscopy.

*Weekly Costco & Trader Joe's shopping.

    *Strawberry Farm (season's almost over!)

*Repackage Costco burgers into human-size proportions for freezer.

*Lunch (well, breakfast, actually) FINALLY @ 1:30.

*Check MS/FB/Nest....notice some app's are acting wonky.

*Reboot computer, and re-up. WOW, big difference!

    ReplyDelete
  58. About the physical....My doc is da bomb-diggityest. So totally focused on you when she's with you and so thorough yet efficient.

AND, THANKS in no small part to the kind thoughts and prayers of my OWL-FRIENS, she was much happier with the condition my condition is in than I have been of late. VERY reassuring, when I was seriously afraid she might send me home by way of the E/R. Thank you, guys!

One more to go, on EBJ's blog, then I need a nap! PLEASE, somebody pop in and break these up :-)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Hi Bon'O You've had a very busy day today. I, on the other hand, am procrastinating about taking clothes out of the dryer.

Bonacci You are def a night owl.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Woot-woot,J/L!~~How're things on the bay today? I have beach-envy :-)

EBJ~~When they announced the 50-state series, I bought the The Whitman State Quarter Collection Book (picture) to collect them for granddaughter, who wasn't born until 2000.

I tried to get uncirculated ones from my Credit Union each time they were released in fresh rolls to banks, etc.

Way back then, seemed the beautiful empty book would never be filled. The only one I had trouble getting was Oklahoma.

When my daughter found one in N.C., I asked her to just hold on to it. I sent the book to my granddaughter for her birthday last February, and she got the honor of putting in that last Oklahoma quarter.

  61. Duh, OWL-'FRIENS'?? See, frienDs, told ya it's nap-time. Can't blame it on Zona's AZ heat...

btw, ZONA, Mud-MEK, EBJ, Scirish, Tink, J/L, Lani, Banff-Bear, Carol...some of us are feeling a bit land-locked this summer........keep those ocean, pool, trout farm, mountain stream pics/vids coming!

  62. Bon'O Just overcast, gray, and cool here today. Nothing to envy.

Bonacci I should have mentioned it before.....to find Whabbear, go to my friends. He is Robert.

  63. Bonacci, I used to do my own pool maintenance. The easiest thing to do was take a sample of the water to Leslie's (a chain, they test the water for free).

They analyze the water and write down what you need to do to correct if something is wrong.

You can get the little test strips, which I used weekly.

When we moved and rented that house out, I decided to hire a pool service to maintain the water. I didn't want to depend on a tenant to be responsible for it.

The guy who was taking care of the pool here gave us a deal to do both houses.

We do the cleaning of this pool ourselves, vacuuming and brushing, and he maintains the chemicals.

He comes once a week and is well worth the monthly charge. They are pretty reasonable around here.

I've always enjoyed taking care of the pool, it's good exercise and I like seeing how good it looks when it's done!

Bono that is a great collector book! Mine was a cheap one but it's almost full!

MR. EBJ's is a little nicer than mine and he is missing a couple less than I am.

Lani and JL have fun tonight!

  68. Hi Everyone..

Hope all had a good day..

I finally made it to the gym 2nite, and I struggled, but I did it.. I have noticed when I go the gym, I get tired earlier then norm.. as I feel myself getting sleepy..

I had some drama in my fam 2day, between two of my cousins (brother and sister) it was over my aunt and uncles estate. The will is straight forward, but there are things they can't seem to agree on, this has been going on over a yr now.. and 2day it exploded.. every time my phone rang I crinched. At one point they were both crying, (different phone calls to me) and I had to try to calm the waters.. All this happening while I am wondering, why I am involved so. I stayed out of it as much as I could, but it fell to me after all.. Now they are not talking to each other.. I offered to go there 2nite to try and mediate.. but their anger is to raw. At this point they both need to settle down before anything can go forward.. They did agree to seek out sep counsel, so I am hoping this will work.. and I am praying that in time they will speak again..

    I am mentally drained..

Thanks for letting me vent, as you all know, words always make me feel better..

I did not proof read, so please
    excuse errors..

I also did not read the comments.. I am going to shut down for the night and hope for a better tomorrow..
