SHOWERS OR BATHS?

by Just_Lin

There are two kinds of people in the world; those who prefer showers and those who prefer baths. I definitely fall in the first category. I love the feeling of the hot water pouring over my body. I find it soothing and stimulating at the same time. I always stay in the shower longer than I mean to just because it feels so good. And who came up with the idea of having a massage setting on a shower head? Pure genius!

Soaking in a tub always sounds better to me than what the reality is. A few years ago, my bathroom was re-done and everything in it, floor to ceiling, was new. Ah, the new bathtub looked so white and shiny and inviting. I decided I should treat myself to a nice long soak in the tub, something I hadn't done in decades. I started the flow of hot water and carefully and gingerly lowered myself into the tub. It quickly became clear that there wasn't really going to be that much room for water now that I was in it. Parts of me were constantly exposed to the cold air. If I slid down in the water to submerge my chest and back, then my bent knees and much of my legs were out in the cold. If I straightened my legs to warm them in the water, then my top half was out of the water and cold. This wasn't relaxing at all!

Then came the real test; getting out of the tub. OMG! I hadn't thought about that! I barely fit in the tub as it was and now I had to figure out how to maneuver myself into a position that would allow me to get out without killing myself. Being older and with knees much weaker than they used to be, this was quite a feat in itself. First I had to flop onto my belly so I could get on all fours. Oh, what a lovely picture that was, not to mention the mini tidal wave that it caused! Then, while holding on to the wet, slippery edge of the tub, I had to get my legs under me and push myself up, hoping my hands didn't slip, causing my chin or chest to crash into the edge of the tub in a most unpleasant way. I barely got out alive! I'm fairly certain that will be the last time I ever try taking a bath.

As a child I had baths all the time, never showers. One particular bath stands out in my memory. When I was about 7 years old, my mother had me take a bath with my little brother who was two years old at the time. She trusted that I would keep my eye on him and not let him drown while she tended to other chores. What she didn't know was that her seven year old daughter was experimenting with mind control that evening. Through the power of suggestion (okay, maybe it was the grunting noises I was making while squeezing the bar of soap until it squirted out of my hand) I got my brother to take a poop in the bath water. Of course I jumped out immediately (in those days I could do that) and yelled for my mother and pointed an accusing finger at my brother, feining shock and surprise at what he'd done. I was secretly pleased that my experiment worked, plus I never had to take a bath with him again.

Are you a shower person or a bath person?

P.S. Special thanks to MO for posing for the illustration. : )

  1. Man, I was peeing my panties, trying to get logged in and seeing that it was open since 8:52 and no one grabbed that #1...wooo hoo.

Unbelievably, I am back at jury duty today. I didn't expect it for sure. I hope all the Owls that fly in today will have a great day and going to read the blogs.

By the title, I would say bath but I never get one. I think baths make you cleaner..but, going to read the blog now.

  2. J/L: OMG, that was hilarious! I am sitting here laughing my butt off and everyone is probably wondering what kind of drug I took this morning!

Your description of getting out of the tub was hilarious and GENIOUS. It was so funny especially because I HAVE BEEN THERE! LOL

Also, the pooping in the tub. My kids used to take baths together. One time my older boys started screaming because there little sister took a doo doo in the tub. That was funny and my middle son never lets me forget about it. LOL.

Thanks for a great LOL blog this morning!! Hugs

  4. Tina: Does that mean you prefer a shower?

  5. yes Bebbi~

Omg J/L~ i HATE baths! I used to have to take one (when i was little) with my brother AND sister! It was disgusting...how could we be clean at the end if the water was brown? OMG! I've never taken a bath again! totally grosses me out~

  6. Morning Glories!

Congrats on first Bebbi! I am thinking you must be on a murder case. LOL I had jury duty a few years ago but it only took a few days as it had to do with car theft.

Well I am guessing Tina likes showers.

J/L I like both. A shower is wonderful when I am getting ready daily but a long hot soak with a book to read is just the ticket when every muscle is screaming at me.

Thank goodness I never had to take a bath with anyone who pooed in the tub! LOL Tho as a kid we would see who could fart the hardest to see who would create the best bubble bath.

Hope everyone has a great day!

  7. Good Morning Hooters!

    Congrats on 1st bebbi

Tina- would you please clarify if you like showers or bath's? I don't think I am quite sure yet.

I am a both kind of girl. I always shower in the morning but will soak at night( mostly in the winter) just for the relaxation. Oh, and to have Mr. Goldie come wash my back..:)

The only problem I have is that I am 5'10" so I can't lay down in the tub all the way.

Oh, and no one has ever pooped in the tub while I was in there- although I have have given some poopy covered children baths!

  8. Great blog Just Lin! I am definately a shower person. Back when I could fit in a tub I would always take a shower after because I never felt clean. I mean you are sitting there in your own dirt. Yuk!!! At first the warm water feels good but I could never lie there for hours like my sister does. I would be one giant prune if I did! LOL! Yup showers are for me!

  10. A big hello to each and every owl!! I haven't been here in forever but had a few minutes this morning and thought I'd stop in.

Just_Lin, what a hilarious blog! Great job! And, Mo, lovely picture of you, little piggy. :) I prefer showers--I look at baths as just a relaxation thing, although I very rarely take a bath, as I seem to want to get out as soon as I get in.

Lynn D, I did not take that Food Bank job--thanks so much for your great advice and help. I hope you are doing well.

Mo, you're such a sweetheart. Thanks.

Thank you to those who left kind comments on my myspace about Ippuni. We miss him so much.

Tinka, I hope you're feeling good today.

  12. J/L..

LOL.. on your blog.. all I could think of is when I was in Italy many yrs ago and I could not fit into the tub, but they had no shower, so I had to make due.. I actually did get in the tub, but could not move, so washing myself was impossible, so I had to stand and wash, which of course is not fun..

I am a shower person, as I see Tina is as well.. don't like washing up in what seems to be dirty water, even if it is my dirt!

I think the last time I took a bath was when I was in Italy. I vowed on that trip, that I would never take a bath again, even if I could fit in the tub..

    Great Job J/L.. so fun!!!!

  21. Happy Thursday!!

    GOod Morning..

just lin - LOVED your blog this am. - we also had our bathroom redone and I anticipated a nice long hot bath with candles to relax - WELL, I am NOT one to relax like that - I found NOTHING relaxing or exciting about it..

SO - I'll stick with my showers!!! Thank you!!!
    :-)

and also - thanks for the visual of you trying to get out of the tub!!
    :-)

have to take my mom on errands today - so have to run..

I hope everyone has an excellent day!!

  22. The only time I shower is a quick one when I get out of the Hot Tub. That is just fast enough to wash off any trace of chlorine that causes one to itch. It takes me 3 minutes tops. I love my daily bath. That is when I relax at the end of the day. I just got a new one with lots of handles to hold getting in and out.
"Ah Calgon, take me away". That's my feeling about baths.

  23. I had my conference with the doctor yesterday. I was nervous as to what he would say. He had no idea why arthritis is making my legs, ankles and feet hurt so much I can hardly walk. He is arranging for me to go into the hospital to see an internist. What he will do I don't know. All I do know is that I am tired of feeling disabled. I have to find out if this is what I have to deal with for the rest of my life or can they 'fix' me. Jack has already built a ramp to the cabin and 5th wheel because I can't do the stairs. My house is two levels but it's built in such a way that both levels are at ground level. I am happy about that except that to easily get to my bottom level I have to walk around to the back of the house. Needlessly to say I rarely go down stairs. If I have to I will put in one of those electric chairs that go up and down the stairs. Does anyone know anything about those? I would appreciate any information.

I had better get breakfast. I will be back later. I have a couple more comments about baths verses showers. Great blog Just-Lin and great picture Maureen.

  24. Good morning everyone.....

A few years ago... before I moved into this house...my previous house had a big jacuzzi...and it had these jacs situated around the tub..you know...to make the water cuzzi. And just between us..there was a jac on either side that was centrally located and if you laid on your side or put you legs over the side of the tub with you head on one of those inflatable pillows on the other side.....that jac would make you scream hallelujah.....oh! excuse me!...this is about whether you prefer a bath or a shower isn't it?! Sorry...I got a little side-jac-ed....

The tub I have now has thousands of tiny holes and uses air bubbles to stimulate the water into a frenzy...and it is very relaxing and I do feel better when I get out of it.....but I proceed to the shower to wash off all the dead skin cells...various hairs...any grit or anything else that might be considered "gross or nasty".....but its not very often that I want to go through all that...God I miss jac and the cuzzi water.....so most days I shower.
I was raised Baptist and they believe baptism means you must be full immersed....I figure I get that in the tub o bubbles....Catholics believe in slinging the water at you....and I figure I get that in the shower from the sprayers going up the wall....and the Methodist believe in a sprinkle so I get that from the overhead rain simulator head.

I am not saying I buy into all that ritual mumbo-jumbo but its no more trouble to be safe than sorry.

And one more thing....Rosie O has always said she bathes in the tub even shampooing her hair there....

Now I love Rosie but washing you hair and face in bath water is just wrong.....IMHO....

    oh! BTW! I prefer a shower....hand held....TYVM!

  25. Good morning, everybody! I'd call you out by name, except I'm late for work and have to catch a quick... shower! :)

  26. Maybe they created bubble baths so you wouldn't have to see the rogue curly hair floating on top of the bath water......eeeeeewwwww!

DeeDee Hand-held shower massager. That's all I'm saying.

  27. Bebbi Congrats on first. Glad you didn't have an "accident".

Tinka I'm so sorry about your legs. I hope the internest has some ideas for treatment that will help. Congrats on your march to 25.

  29. Good Morning Everyone!

J/LIN: Oh it's showers for me! I have bad knees too and I wouldn't risk getting in the bathtub. The last thing I want is to fall, crack my head open and have 5 paramedics staring at my nekkid wobbly bits..oh the horror!!

When I first opened the blog..I thought you had written about..uh..where we preferred romantic encounters..Ten years ago I would have said bathtub..but damn nowadays there would be no room for water..just flesh. I guess that's why we have a pool. ;)

    Great blog today J/LIN..thank you!!!

  30. Sandie I'm sure happy to see you here today. I've been thinking about you a lot. (((HUGS)))

  31. Zona Yes, water can be very sensuous. I'm thinking about a particularly nice shower that I took in Idaho. : )

When I first moved to San Francisco, my friend and I rented a little place that had a huge claw-footed bath tub. Now THAT bathtub had room to play in and even I could soak comfortably in it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. BEBBI: Congrats on FIRST..tonight is the beginning of the end for J/J I fear..

TINA: It looks like it's 70 to 0 in favor of showers for you!

LYNND: I used to love to lay in the tub with a magazine when I was a kid..but I always got in trouble cuz I would get so engrossed in it that I'd get the bottom of the pages all wet and wrinkled.

GOLDIE: I get my back washed in the shower too...try it..you'll like it! ;)

SHIRLEY: LOL @ turning into a prune!

SANDIE: I'm was so sorry to hear about Ippuni..I know how much you miss him.

    CAROL: What a workout..wash and dunk..wash and dunk.. ;)

TINKA: I hope that get to the bottom of this so that you can find some relief...love you..

  35. Congrats on #1 Bebbi ;-)

J/L,You had me in stitches! You painted a very good visual lol! I am a shower gal, but on my last trip to Vegas I felt like taking a leisurely bath. Well, all was fine until it came time to get out! Your experience was the same as mine. I cannot bend one of my knees. I was contorting myself every which way but loose! I finally grabbed a towel and used it to get traction for my good knee and hurl myself out! The show "Most Funniest Videos" would have loved it!

DeeDee~ Your "Religious experience" with the jacuzzi & tub/shower, had me ROTFLMAO!!!!!

bbl, I have to meet my sister in a few minutes.... and look for a shower head ;-)

JL I loved your blog today! I am a shower person these days. Used to love bubble baths, and this house has a huge oval tub that would be great to soak in.

I am afraid getting out would be hard, tho!

I have candles and bubbles sitting on the edge but so far they haven't been used.

Now like some of you, 10-20 years ago was a diff. story! ;)

    MO huge hugs to you...

  41. DeeDee I like how they use the word "satisfying" repeatedly. Oooh, like the poodle, too.

The marching is just a kind of game to see who can get 1st, 25, 50, 69, and 100. Sometimes the march is interrupted and sometimes the number is stolen away. Shirley is keeping score of our stats.

  42. I love reading all the comments today. I just can't understand how someone would prefer a shower to a bath. I guess it's what ever 'floats your boat'.

When I had Japanese students they always showered (and I mean long showers) and then lay in the bathtub. My water bill went through the roof. Apparently in Japan hot water comes in from the main line the same as cold water. They always had to be cautioned about draining the water tank.

I found by accident that, in my opinion, baths clean a body better than showers do. That happened on the few times I showered very dirty little two years old. I scrubbed them hard but I didn't get the same sweet swelling babies by showering them as I did by having them soaking in a tub. Maybe it is different with adults however as we don't wear diapers. At least I don't think any of us do.

My niece is picking me up and we are going to finish the last of my Mom's financial business by closing out the account that became mine after she died. It would have been my sister's and mine so of course I will divide what is in there between two families. That will be the end of the process. I don't like working with money.

  44. Garcias J/L.....so 70-100 hasn't been done yet....

Yes...satisfying.....remember when those phallic looking vibrators starting being advertised with the lady holding it against her face....lol
Well of course I had to have one and I sat and ran it around my face and I learned that if you touch your nose with something that is vibrating you will definitely sneeze. Well! After all the sneezing and teeth rattling I thought...this is ridiculous!

My housekeeper...a sweet little Asian girl had seen me with it...sneezing and what not...and she told me..."not for your face"......"it personal for lady"..and she put a folded piece of paper in my hand then scampered away with her cute geisha giggle...

I unfolded the paper and she had drawn me a picture....primitive..but none the less informative.....

live and learn.....if it makes you sneeze and makes your teeth rattle.... then get it outta your face....

    ReplyDelete
  45. DeeDee LMAO! Thank goodness for your housekeeper. You might still be massaging your nose! Bwahahahaha!

After she passed my cousin had it taken out by the same ppl that put it in, they gave her a $500.00 us dollar refund.. Which they said they give to all the ppl that have it taken out within a yr or two of installation..

  59. Hello?

This is a little baby step back into polite (?..lol) society....I've been reading the blogs everyday...but not feeling like posting or reading comments. I've been being (very) obsessive about CA real estate listings, even though the thought of packing and traveling horrify me. How the heck to you get rid of stuff you might need as soon as you get rid of it?
I thought about responding to the blog by Bonacci about addiction (my Dad), but it felt like it would take too much effort. I hate the phone still, cuz it won't be my Mom, and I just don't want to talk to people who are living their lives as if nothing happened, (I really don't give a shit if your hairdresser just quit and you don't know what you are going to do) my universe has a great big freakin hole in it and it doesn't have anything to do with hair! Today's topic gave me a chuckle though.

I have always loved taking a morning shower...It is a ritual. Coffee, computer, shower. In times of a national or personal emergency the first two can be skipped, the shower cannot. Several years ago, the city had a major water main break in the early morning hours. I think everyone in the city was awakened by the water pipes in their respective residences screaming and vibrating due to the abrupt lack of pressure. As you may be aware, such a break is not easily or quickly repaired. I, however was not daunted in my quest for my morning shower requirement. Bottled water, heated on the stove and delivered through a simple garden watering can over a kitchen sink will adequately approximate a morning shower, even if it is carbonated water!

That said, an evening bath, after a humid, sticky day feels refreshing and relaxing at the same time. Especially if you have clean, fresh smelling sheets to get into after. However, if I am ever required to stay immobile in a body of water for a long period of time , someone better have a damn good explanation for why I'm not swimming!

    ReplyDelete
  60. kgrl...thanks....I had been feeling invisible "before" and it bothered me. Now I'm trying to care. I want....but I don't know what....

You are never invisible. Coming back to earth will surly take a while you have lost a very big part of your life, your feelings are warranted. Truth be told I would not give a shit about the hairdresser either. Take your time, baby steps, you will emerge. Many good thoughts coming your way.. ♥♥♥

I went to the cemetary and just as I was approaching it started pouring. I only stayed a few minutes. I did have lunch with some cousins, but it was just kinda going thru the motions. I didn't want to come home, alone to an empty house so I went to the library for hours, then sat at McDonalds for another couple hours. So fucking pathetic. I'm home now...couldn't hide any longer.

  70. Carol.....the polyp was mine...I used that picture for Christmas cards that year....well you know...people want to know whats been going on....I had seen some other film of polyps and comparatively speaking...mine looked great.....nevertheless....they removed it.

Does the hand held shower massage work??!! YesYesYes....and don't get stuck with some imitation...get the water pik teledyne brand and take out that little bugger piece that conserves water....this is no time to be stingy!!

Glad they removed it, but now you have a pic of it, so it will never be forgotten.. I am however still glad you have a colorful poodle for us to look at.. so much cuter.. I gotta admit the polyp (sp) thingy was a bit frightening.. and thanks for the info on the shower massage thingy..
