They Danced

some days my mind is a flutter
so be this day
should I, would I, could I
not sure
was it to be different
maybe
is in the cards
i think perhaps
so you play the cards you are dealt with
and hope for a win
he was suppose to be more
yet he is

my eldest italian stallion
turning 30 on the 25th
where did the time go
how did 30 yrs go so fast
he was just standing on our front
porch at age 7 crying while i moved
all my belongings to begin again
he waved
i could not look at him
i drove away
rear view mirror told the story
still waving
now he is a man
and i wave to him

they danced, he is 85 she is 79
at first his footing was not right
so he asked "can i do it"
"yes dad" I said "you can do it"
wind beneath my wings
was the song
i watched with real tears
my mind talking to me as i watch
"how much time do I have left with them"
he held her in his arms
their hands locked together
they danced as if it was 30 yrs ago
neither skipped a beat
he was proud
"hey not bad for a 85 yr old man, huh"
no, not bad at all

weddings
you never know who you will sit with
this one man so handsome his wife so pretty
a perfect couple
conversation began
you learn so much in 4 hrs
my dad I say was in world war 2
disbelief was on the handsome man's face
he could not see the age in my dad
that has changed him so
he shook the veteran's hand
and thanked him for his service
the veteran was humbled
a conversation for the ride home
memories of germany
flood thru
i listen
no words just his

Carol, what a touching blog. In so many different ways.

  6. Morning Bebbi!

Very moving Carol....life is short....it goes by faster and faster each year....

My friend....Lisa....the one that plotted my birthday surprise last year....is sick. The ovarian cancer which she was diagnosed to have in 2002 is finally showing its strength and will....I am afraid...take her away soon.

She accepts it and feels fortunate to have had the last 8 great years......I haven't been able to accept it....I don't know if I ever will.....

She hadn't told me...but the doctor said 6 months...that was six months ago......

Guys....I am not asking for anything....don't get sappy on me......I think just writing this down may be part of my process of dealing with this situation.....I just appreciate you're listening...

She is home and in a "no visitors" mode right now....when her sister told me this of course.....as Tina said..."you barreled right over there didn't you?!"

Of course I did! Lisa got tickled and said....."if I want to see you I just have to say no visitors"...

She does feel like crap and has shingles right now so that hurts and everything really tires her out.

I didn't keep her long....I changed her bed and put all her battenburg on it...that she loves....and didn't feel like doing or asking her husband to do....she said he wouldn't do it right anyway....lol

Whew! I have to get this day started.....I guess I already did huh?

Carol that was beautiful. It made me teary eyed. I could picture your parents dancing. Yes time flies. Seems like the day to day takes forever and then you turn around and it has been years. I don't get it either.

    Wonderful blog today.

  9. Deedee you are a gem.

Ok,Dee Dee- won't get soft on you but damn girl-take a little punch in the arm and a hi five for going to see your friend. Best wishes that your friend doesnt suffer too long.........

Carol- very insightful blog, I liked!

Our wingless wonder is miserable today- bad night so taking more drugs and going back to bed.....

  13. thanks Goldie....atta girl!

    A punch and a high 5!! See...I like that!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Poor Hodi. Goldie, you are so sweet to help her out.

DeeDee, though your friend wants "no visitors", I would think that wouldn't apply to you. You aren't "people", you're DeeDee!

Tina, our avatars define us, yes? Right now mine is defining me with a broomstick, straight up my arse. Hard to misbehave in that situation, I'd say.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oops. Okay, so I've been misbehaving a little. I stole DeeDee's peacock eggs from her island. If you don't lock them up, I'm going to take them. I got 50 quid each for them. :D

  16. Good morning, owls!

Carol, I so feel the same way about my parents! How much time is left? My dad had a bowel obstruction last week that landed him in the hospital for four days. At 88, I can't help but worry when something happens like this about whether complications will develop.

My parents will celebrate there diamond anniversary next year.

Dee Dee: Have I told you lately how much I hate "The big C"? Hugs to you!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. their anniversary, not there anniversary. Sheesh!

  20. I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet(if they did I missed it)but last Sunday (the 10th) was the 2nd anniversary of the blog. Here is a copy of the first blog Carol posted:

I thought since we are reflecting on time passing...well it doesn't seem like two years. Happy Belated Anniversary to us all!!

  22. Good afternoon/evening Bebbi (congrats on 1st), Bonachichi, DeeDee, Lynn D, Tina, Goldie, Whabbear and Jodi!

Carol your blog today was lovely. I was recently asked by my older sister and brother how much time I thought we had left with mum. I didn't have an answer. I guess we can only take it one day at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  23. CAROL: Time really does move more quickly now..doesn't it? I can remember my cousin dancing with the teddybear my mom made him when he was 2...and now he's the father of two himself..my nephew was 6 when he got a toy video camera and would run around pretending to take video of all of us..now he's 22..6'4" and working in television. Where the heck did the time go?

If I had known then what I know now..I would have slowed down a little..taken more of what seemed like limitless time given to me...and spent it with the ones I love.

    Great blog CAROL..thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Shirley~ I remembered last week cuz i thought it was this week, only to discover it was the 10th~ Happy belated~

    Bear~ I've been resisting commenting on ur post....but I can't hold it back anymore....i would think you'd hate the big C...i mean....ur a bear, aren't you?~ :)~

And no, believe it or not (and nobody will), I wasn't thinking about that!

Of course, now that you mention it, hate is far too strong a word. Indifference will do quite nicely! :)

BEBBI: Congrats on FIRST! Bingowoowoo to you too!

DEEDEE: I won't get all sappy on you..but you have to know how badly I want to.. :)

GOLDIE: Ditto what SHIRLEY said..thank you!

BONACHI: I almost admitted to grabbing that little peacock too..but nevermind... ;)

BEAR: I read your correction and thought "Wait..he's spelling anniversary right.." lol..

  38. Evening Owls!

Well this is the punishment I get for not checking my email. Jodi I feel like a butt head as I did not realize we were sending group flowers.

I would send you a card but the ones I had all went out as Christmas cards! :)

Anywhoooo I have learned my lesson. Great job owls! Love that you all chipped in to lift Jodi's spirits if not her broken wing.

    This group is the best!

    ReplyDelete
  39. That should have been "you're drugged up" not "your". And I'm not even on drugs. (hangs head in shame)

    ReplyDelete
  40. We had a good deal of heavy rain today and strong gusts of winds. I have just stayed home and hunkered down. I should have taken the opportunity to do housework or something but I pretty much have just been lazy.

  45. I've been thinking about Carol's blog. My heart goes out to her dad, her mum and her. I found it so poignant that 1) her mum & dad still dance together and 2) that dad looks to Carol for answers. I just think, "That's a real family".

I can't believe that you guys haven't killed each other in two years. The fact that you haven't well, that's a real family as well.

Jodi wherever you are, keep the pills close for the next couple days.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Bonachichi~ It could still happen...i mean...ur here~ :)~

    ReplyDelete
  47. Me kill someone? I think each and every one of you has wanted to shoot me at least twice.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Bonachichi I can think of three times...but who's counting!

  49. All this time I thought Bebbi's avatar was a ghost! Thanks Just Lin!

    ReplyDelete
  50. honey...i was talking about killing YOU!!!~

    ReplyDelete
  51. Tina, you need a pea shooter. When people piss you off, you can just nail them. I could see you doing it and getting away with it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I went back and read the first blog Carol posted. Then I read the comments. Wow. What a place you all have built here.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Good evening everyone! I am getting better! I am posting & it is before 11:00pm!
Carol, thank-you for reminding us to slow down & smell the roses. I was thinking of the songs " I Hope You Dance" and "The dance",when you mentioned you parents dancing. It was a sweet visual :)

Jodi, sorry you have had a bad day :(

  54. CAROL...never met you or your family, but I feel like I know you and them. I imagine if my parents had the chanve to live out their lives together they would be just like CiCi and Sarah. Thanks for sharing them (and yo) with us.

Feel like Crap with a capital C. Pretty sure I have developed a fever. Gonna curl up and seriously consider calling off work tomorrow

    ReplyDelete
  55. Mo, sorry you are feeling bad :(
I find that total rest is the best medicine.I am retired and can do that. My nasty cruds didn't last too long. When I feel something coming on I head to bed. Hope you are able to do that.

    ReplyDelete

  69. Happy Monday evening Owls.

I'm watching the bachelor and I really like this guy. He seems like a very kind and sensitive person, but not one that is snowed by BS. He just sent one of the girls home that I really didn't like. I hope he finds THE ONE for him.

Carol, I got all teary eyed reading the blog. It is so wonderful that you and your family are so close and I love that you share them with us.

Also, thanks for the email today.

    ReplyDelete
  70. J/L we have had the same weather here. Yesterday I was on the freeway when a cloud burst loose and I could hardly see where I was going. I hate when that happens. I waited til the rain stopped today before I went out.

Zona, I am trying to keep dry. I have to go out again tomorrow and it is supposed to rain AGAIN!

Jodi, Hope you are taking your drugs. They will help you sleep, too.

Goldie, Thanks again for sending the flowers for us. You are a gem.

Dee, This is me not getting sappy, but you are such a good friend.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Mary, When are you going to Vegas again? Sharon and I are going in Feb.

Lynn, I forgot to tell you when we talked, how much I laughed at your 'Christmas' card.

    ReplyDelete
  72. SacBarb We are in a lull between storms now. I tried to stay out of it today. I just hunkered down and watched TV all day.

MO If you're still sick in the a.m., you should def stay home and take care of yourself. Besides, no one at work wants to be around a sicky, right?

Jodi I hope you are taking it very, very easy and letting others do for you.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Carol, been checking, no email yet :(

SacBarb, We aren't going until March. I am going to Florida to visit a snowbird friend of mine the first week in march, then Vegas the next week. We haven't gotten our tickets for Vegas yet. Who knows, it could be Feb???

Time for these old bones to get to bed. I have been staying up way too late.....

    ReplyDelete
  74. Miss Carol, that was a very beautiful blog today. I just walked over and gave the dozing hubby a kiss between snores. :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Carol, that is also so true... My Dad was president of a company in his prime, full of confidence and competence. Now, at 88, he is easily confused, tentative, and fragile.

Wow! Give your Dad a hug next time you see him, and I'll do the same.

And yes, congrats to all of us who are still active in the nest! Two years is a lot of blogs and comments!

Why, it seems like just yesterday...

    ReplyDelete
  76. Zona: LOL! And Mary, thanks for the 69 shout-out!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Tomorrow I leave for Iowa City with Philip. We will spend all day with doctors on Wednesday. He has been very anxious at school to the point that I'm worried and so is the school. He is only six years old and I don't like all the anxiety that is running through out his body. His school has been very very helpful, but it is time to go more higher skilled professionals then what my hicktown provides.

Then I go to Iowa City again next week for Matthew to have him tested for autism. He is a bit of a puzzlement. He may be a high functioning austic child or maybe he is just Matthew.

I'm doing this all by myself. Hubby is swamped with work and I don't want to concern him with all of this. I just want him to concentrate on his job.

    ReplyDelete
  78. CAROL: I don't think that teddy bear survived..but it sure was loved..I do have pics of him with it though..I need to dig those out and send them to him.

BARB: We are supposed to get an inch tomorrow! Now normally I wouldn't be excited about an inch..but in this case..YAY!!

MO: I vote Stay Home...I hope my vote counts!

MARY: G'night..hope you have the sweetest of dreams!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Oh, good heavens, I forgot to tell you all that my 87 year old grandpa now has two girlfriends!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Oh, and my grandpa had to go to the emergency room last week for second degree burns on his feet. His feet were cold when he went to bed so he wrapped them a heating pad that was as old as Moses.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Good night sweet owls, happy anniversary.

    xxoo
