Jeremy Lusk 1984 - 2009

by Bonachichi

I've just returned from Costa Rica. I wanted to write about my reason for going there last December, but I'd been feeling judged and didn't want another firestorm before an emotional journey. A group of us went to honor a wonderful young athlete whose life ended too soon. I'd met Jeremy only once, just 2 days before he had the accident that ultimately killed him. He was unremarkable to me, a little rough around the edges. I meet a lot of 20-somethings like that. I can never forget him though, because I saw the jump that killed him. I see a lot of these guys fall from staggering heights and lay limp for a few seconds that seem like minutes. They always get up, give the thumbs-up signal, and almost always leave the field under their own power. Not Jeremy, though. I knew it was bad. Everyone knew it was bad. I didn't like or dislike him. I didn't know him. But he was part of my world. One of us. A fallen soldier, doing what he loved. It was only right that we gathered to salute his memory. In 10 years, nobody will remember this young man. Life moves on, woulds heal. I just feel that he deserves one last pat on the back for being a master at his craft. Rest in peace, Jeremy Lusk.

  1. Morning Glories!

Bonachichi every death it seems is shocking and tragic when we hear bout it on TV. It is even worse if you know the person even if it was just one meeting. It always bothers me when it is someone so young.

I guess these athletes know the risks of any sport but I sometimes think they have what they feel is the cloak of invinciabilty when they are young. It won't happen to me. I hope because he was doing something he loved in some small measure it comforts his family.

I have to hop in the shower for a very long day. Was in bed most of the day yesterday and don't feel much better today but have to drag my sorry behind to the food bank this morning.

    Waving at you all!

  2. Good morning and congrats for being brave to be #1 LynnD!

That cloak of invncibility is something I think we've all worn. We learn to be afraid, yes?

It is sad, what happened. I was very moved by everyone's attitude. A celebration of life rather than marking the passing of one. We can learn something from these young people.

  5. Carol, Jeremy Lusk was an eXtreme sports athlete. His sport was Freestyle Moto-cross. In his circle, he was world-class; Gold medals in competitions and well respected. His signature move, or trick was the one that killed him. It was called the Look Back Hart Attack (spelling wrong on purpose) and we science goons kept remarking on how it should not be possible given the laws of physics. It's done throughout the vid, but around 1:10 is a clear picture of it.

I thought he looked mean when I met him. Like someone I wouldn't want my daughter hanging around. Then he smiled and his whole face transformed. He really did have a beautiful smile.

  6. BONACHICHI: It is so sad to loss these young people and I am sorry for your loss and having to be there to actually see it happen..no matter how well you knew him. I would not like my kids/grandkids to do these scary things...and then I think, gee, my son is a policeman!! go figure

I have been on the phone for 1 hour buying concert tickets for a country thing this summer with four concerts (NO TINA NOT SUGARLAND). I get handicap seating beacause of not being able to walk as far so I have to call for those. It usually is quick but the transferred me, disconnected me and gave me other numbers for exactly one hour and ten min. I have tons to do today with leaving at 6:30 AM so I am off.

Oh yes....to those that know me and my packing abilities or lack thereof....I AM ALMOST PACKED!!!

    BBL

LYNN, hope you are better today. Eat some of those green guys you have and put on the tassel when you go to the food bank...you know ...to lighten the mood!! :)

  7. Good Afternoon.....

of course I read more about Jeremy and saw the crash video.....neck and spine injuries are so scary....even sometimes when people survive them.....Jeremy was doing what he loved.....and I don't think he ever knew what hit him....the doctors put him into a coma then he went into respiratory and cardiac arrest couple of days later....

It is always so sad to see a young life end.

I have pictures of a great nephew who was into motocross when he was younger. One picture that I framed was Shane sailing above the photographer.....I always encouraged him but can't say I wasn't relieved when it was over and the worst he suffered was a broken femur......he is married now with 4 daughters and sells motorcycles...so he gets to participate in other ways...

I don't know about the 10 year thing though Bonachichi.....you just told us about him.....I don't think I will forget getting to know Jeremy Lusk through his website...interviews...and the videos of his amazing performances that I have watched today.......

  8. DeeDee, Jeremy's teammates say they'll meet up with him again in the future. A good outlook, I think. I hate being morbid, which is why I waited an entire year to say anything about it here.

Now because I know these guys would be completely pissed if the mood were somber, I will tell you about another snafu that happened on that same trip. The father of another athlete jumped out of a boat going 50 mph and shattered his hip. I was right there. He just jumped out. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. He has still not lived that down.

  9. Oh and DeeDee, thank you for watching him. He really was beautiful to watch.

  10. Nice tribute, Bonachichi. It's a shame he left this world so young. He was really talented.

  11. It occurs to me that we should be wishing Dianne Bon Voyage. Di, worry only about enjoying yourself. I really hope you have a fabulous time!

  12. Bonachichi: That was a very moving tribute to a fallen athlete. I remember seeing that on the news when it happened and watched the video. My middle son is very athletic and he loved doing bike stunts and skateboarding for a while in his life. We always went to the X-Games when they came to Louisville. I enjoy watching them on television every so often and it is remarkable the things they can do. Thanks for sharing your personal experience.

I hope everyone's day went well. I had a good one with my daughter. We went shopping and I don't normally like shopping but I really enjoyed it today.

Hello LynnD and congrats on first.

Hi Dianne, DeeDee, Carol and Lois!

  13. Carol: is there any way to shut off those two Nascar videos? They drive me to the brink...or it could be that I am PMSing like a Mo' fo'...one or the other...lol.

    I feel fat.

  14. J/L: I miss you! I do hope that things get figured out soon and the everyone (especially you!) is doing okay. I am sure you are just exhausted. Any word on the custody ruling? You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Sorry I didn't say anything sooner.

  15. Happy Saturday Owls.

I am back from Vegas $30 richer. Ya hoo! Now I can finally put that pool in the back yard. Of course it will be a kiddy pool...

I wish I had Mary's luck. But we did have a good time. Terry Fator and Cirque du Soleil were both excellent and well worth the money.

We did not go anywhere near where the President was. That was WAYYYY too many people to cope with. Believe it or not, the casinos had fewer people than anywhere Obama was.

  22. It seems that we need some humor here with all the tribulations going on in everyone's lives. My apologies for a downer blog. I've been bombarding Tina with happy blogs, so maybe I will get lucky and actually produce some smiles in the near future.

In the meantime, we can all go visit DeeDee's island, which is part Neverland Ranch, part Nuclear Blast Survival Bunker. The only place I know where you can see both weapons of mass destruction and mythical creatures co-existing peacefully.

Stay away from my island, as the only thing there are attempts at writing bad words in the spirit of crop circles, and dropping those ukela no, ukelele, no, ukalalele GUITARS in trees.
