Ricky Nelson & Sons

by Dianne

One of the shows on our cruise was a show paying tribute to Ricky Nelson by his two 41 yr old twins (yes, they are 41). It was a wonderful performance. They showed clips of the Ozzie and Harriet Show with Ricky and clips of when he was a teen idol. As a clip would end, they would come out singing that particular song. It was very touching as they talked about their family..dad, grandparents, mom and Uncle David (who is now retired and fishing in California). These boys were 18 when they lost their dad and seem to have grown up into nice young men. I know some of you younger people may not really know or remember much about Ricky Nelson (my daughter didn't even know who he was), but most of us will have fond memories. If you want to read more on their story, you can google it as I didn't want to take up any more room here. They finish their performance with the song attached and it is very moving and there didn't seem to be many dry eyes in the theater at the end of the show. Listen to the song and the words very carefully and enjoy the story about the Ricky Nelson Tribute.

It's been 24 years since one-time teen heartthrob Ricky Nelson tragically died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve in 1985. Now, 19 years after the rock and roll legend's twin sons Matthew and Gunnar Nelson found their own fame with several top ten singles, including the Number One hit "Love and Affection," the Nelsons are hitting the road again and paying tribute to their Rock and Roll Hall of Famer "pop," as they refer to him, in the Ricky Nelson Remembered Tour.

  1. Morning glories!

Deedee did it again! You are the most beautiful!

J/L Your beauty only compares to Deedee's!

Tina weeeellll your beauty is third fiddle! LMAO

Dianne that is wonderful but holy hell those boys are now 41???

I remember Ricky Nelson, always loved the song Garden party. Always thought he was damn cute too. It was so tragic when he died.

Loved the lyrics to this song as it is so true. Hoping and wishing that you could have a last minute with a loved one who has passed would be the greatest gift ever.

  2. morning ladies.....

Ricky Nelson was 5 years younger than me and hotter than a firecracker....

he was giving Elvis a run for his money before the "british invasion" and after that it all just kind of fizzled.....and he and that bat shit crazy Kris Harmon squandered his fortune....

that comeback song...."Garden Party" was written after Rick had made an appearance at Madison Square Garden and was booed for singing new music rather than just his hits......

And those boys of his never quite hit the big time....although I have seen his daughter Tracey in quite a few television shows....

The cool thing is that there have been a lot of stories told by family and house workers involving the paranormal......in the original Ozzie & Harriet house and the Errol Flynn estate that Ricky owned in the valley....
    "spooks and apparitions...oh no!!

I spent many an hour fantasizing about Rick Nelson and his brother David....

I think David would have made a good husband......

one last thang....not a lot of people know this but Ricky was a hellion in high school...he belonged to a nasty gang...he tattooed his hand with ink and a needle....the gang made nightly trips down Hollywood Blvd... harassing and beating up people....Ricky once sucker punched a cop...but Ozzie got him out of it.

His DC-3 crashed near Texarkana Texas in a small town called DeKalb....I have friends and family there so I saw photos taken by people living near that field that were just heartbreaking....the pilot and co-pilot were able to escape through the cockpit windows......they always have said that Rick and the other passengers were killed as the plane went down striking obstacles....yet their remains were found huddled at the cockpit door....doesn't matter now....the fire was so big they may have been killed from breathing smoke before the crash even occured......

  4. Ricky was cute but he never came close to dethroning Elvis as far as I am concerned.

  5. Happy Tuesday Owls.

I haven't heard this song but I really like it and I can certainly identify with the words.

I can't believe those 'kids' are 41. I remember watching Ozzie and Harriet on our black and white TV. I can believe Ricky was a hellion in high school. They even portrayed him as a bit of a bad boy on the show and David was the good one. It was sad when Ricky's plane crashed. Thanks for bringing back those memories Dianne.

  7. he did in record sales and top 10 hits.....gave Elvis a run for his money I mean......

Whether or not he ever topped Elvis...I don't know....I didn't even know Elvis was a bottom.....

Dethroned....never....everybody knows Elvis was on the throne when he took his last breath.....

  12. Good Afternoon!

DIANNE: I used to watch "The Ozzie and Harriet Show" on Nickelodeon. There was something about it's..wholesomeness, I guess is the word..that I really liked. I always thought Ricky Nelson was a cutie. I remember hearing 'Garden Party' for the first time and being so surprised to learn that it was him singing it. I never thought of him as really growing up and out of that teen idol image he portrayed on TV..I suppose that's the magic of reruns!

His sons had a band called Nelson back in the day and I think they had one or two hits. I can't believe they are 41..geez! I liked the song they sang in the video..I think most of us can really relate to it.

Great video and blog today DIANNE..thank you!

  13. DeeDee. I guess "dethroned" was a poor choice of words. LOL

  14. DEEDEE: Congrats on BAMing into FIRST!

I remember hearing about the crash of Ricky Nelson's plane..it was so sad..kinda like an era had ended. I know there was a bit of controversy about the crash too..but I think they cleared that up didn't they?

J/LIN: I always wonder where Pebbles and Dino are when I see BAM BAM.. ;)

LYNN: I agree..it would be wonderful..but so hard to let go..

BEAR: I was surprised it was that long ago too! Time is just flying by!

SACBARB: Ricky was clean cut..but he had that bad boy gleam in his eyes..even in black and white! :D

TINA: Shouldn't Eunice be changing into her St Patrick's day outfit soon? ;)

    DEEDEE: Boris?? LMAO! :D :D

  15. Dianne. I'm glad it was a good show and you enjoyed it. For the most part, I've always found cruise shows to be better than I expected.

  16. I Googled the band Nelson. They had a #1 hit in 1990 with the song "(Can't Live Without Your)Love and Affection".

Well, it rained most of the day today..and now the sun is out and the birds are singing. Love these kinds of days! Hope everyone has had a good one!

  17. Just dropping to say, "hey". All I know of Ricky Nelson is Ozzie & Harriet. Sad really, that people are forgotten.

Will check back in when my hair stops hurting.

  18. Good afternoon everyone! Dee, love seeing your cute little outfit. I am surprised you haven't had that appendage taken off. Is it hard to sit down?

Diane, thanks for the Ricky memories. I loved watching "Ozzie & Harriet". I was disappointed when Ricky didn't sing. I loved his bedroom eyes lol!
His son's have great voices. I actually could understand the lyrics, not like some of today's rap crap. I hope I get a chance to see them while they are touring.
I got side tracked and forgot to
    publish" lol!
Diane I am so glad you had a great time. I can't wait for my cruise next month. Lucky Tinka is going to Hawaii.

  21. DIANNE...how fun! Ricky Nelson was dreamy! When the boys were very young (they began performing at 6) and had the really long hair they were promoting their record and they came to May Co. on the Heights and I stood in line and got their autographs!

  22. Dee Dee: I didn't know that either! Learn something new every day! LOL!

Zona: We're heading down to PS on Friday night for 10 days... looks like we are going to get the warmth! :)

I could hardly believe those "boys" were 41 years old. It was a very enjoyable show.

Congrat on one DeeDee....you are getting up pretty darn early these days.

Last night was a busy night babysitting and watching Jason and Mollie's wedding. Did anyone else watch that show? I am jsut a sucker for all those kind of shows.

  32. DEEDEE: Interesting things you say about the Nelson family as that is pretty much what they told us at the show also. It was a fun show and brought back lots of memories.

MARY: I still meet with my x-coworkers too and it has been over three years for me. My friends are still working so that makes it hard for them to get away sometimes.

Well, I went to the dentist again today to have my final bridge molded and the temp one reworked as it cracked and put back for two final weeks. It is hurting tonight from so many shots again. I was glad to go today as the temp was wiggling like it was going to come out. The numbness has just worn off about an hour ago and it is hurting from him messing around so much in there. I think I will take something for pain and hit the sack.

Night all and thanks for the posts today on my blog and glad you enjoyed it.

She's a Catholic Nun....I'm sure TINA is so pleased!! ;) I'm praying that they will be able to keep Grandma comfortable while she's waiting for the angels to take her away.
