~ I Met A Geek ~

by Tina~in_ut

Bonachichi started this, so I thought I'd just go first~

Hubby and I met in college.  I was taking an Anthropology class and we had to write a paper on who knows what.  We had a choice, though.  Either write about the topic given, or we could join this new club that was forming and write about that.  Hell, joining the club sounded easier at the time, so my friend Shilpi (from India) and I joined.

The club was called Partners.  It was run by the International Dept.  The idea was to pair a foreign born student with an American student.  I was paired with Frances!  OMG!  That guy was a hoot!  Me, being the typical American, I met him for lunch with a pad of paper and a pen to take notes!  OMG that made him mad!  He looked at me and told me he wasn't an assignment!  Lol.....looking back, I was an idiot and had a lot to learn.  Anyway, he and I became fast friends.  He was from Malaysia, but had lived all over.

The next semester, I was in the International Dept offices and in came Frances with this geeky looking white guy.  He was wearing this BRIGHT yellowcorduroy, long sleeved shirt with SHORT blue corduroy shorts.  He had this totally confident air about him and I took an instant dislike.

During that semester, I broke up with my boyfriend of 4 years, started dating someone I never should have, and became the Secretary of the club.  Frances was the President and guess who the Vice-President was?  Yup.....the geek!  The club changed and met in large groups instead of one-on-one (you can imagine some of the problems the one-on-one thing caused) and life long friendships formed.

By the time a year had passed, the geek and I were best friends.  We had lunch with another friend every Friday after classes.  I had decided that I was going to marry Geek, but the bozo wouldn't even ask me out on a real date.  I wrote a friend of mine a note about it and put it in her mailbox in the Intl Dept office.  I was smart, tho.  I taped it shut and stapled it all around.  A week or so later, geek asked me out.  I found out later, after we were engaged, that he had opened that note and re-taped it and re-stapled it.  He was shy about asking me out and wanted to make sure I'd say yes!  It still makes me laugh when I think about it.

When I'm not yelling at him, or smacking him upside the head, or disagreeing with him, I love him to pieces.

How did you meet your significant other or even your best friend? (and for some of you, just pick one husband! or all 3 or 4 if you have the time!)  :)~

  1. Good morning Tina. You look mighty pretty today.

I met my Hubby when I was still in high school. I grew up in Los Angeles and my parents moved to Santa Maria the summer before my senior year. It took a while for me to make friends, but I finally became friends with three girls and we did everything together, including going to a dance at the Elks Hall where Jimmy Clanton was performing.

I borrowed my sister's car and before the dance the girls and I stopped at the drive-in where another friend was a car-hop. (OK, I know I am really dating myself here). The guy I was dating at the time drove in with a friend and parked right next to us, but he was being a butt, so we left to go to the dance.

After we were at the dance for about an hour, in walks the guy and his friend. Since he was still being a butt, I accepted the invitation to dance by his friend. When the dance was over, the friend walked me out to my car (my girlfriends had already found other rides home), and when I tried to start my car, the battery was dead. He had jumper cables in his car and helped me get it started. Since he worked at a gas station, he offered to charge the battery for me, which took about an hour. We sat in his car to wait and he asked me out for that Saturday, which was his birthday.

We married 7 months later and he was buried exactly 33 years to the day, from the day we met, which I didn't even realize until about five years later. I don't say that to be a downer, because we had 33 wonderful (mostly) years together and I have three great kids from the union.

  2. It is raining here today, after a beautiful weekend of temps in the high 70s.

I think I'll go back to bed for a while since I only got less than four hours sleep.

  3. Good Morning Beautiful one and her followers!

I met Mr. G in my parents dining room. He was fairly new in town and worked with my brother. My brother dragged him home for dinner and I was there that day too.

He was a cocky guy from Chicago area and I had no time for him.

Turns out I took a part-time job at the same bar/bowling alley that he and my brother worked at. We started hanging out with the 'group' of friends and eventually it led to one night at Mr.D's roadhouse after we all got off work. He asked me to slow dance to "Endless Love" and that was the first time we kissed.

THATS when I was hooked- but really not interested. I was a single mom of an almost 2 year old with an ex-husband who was being a piece of shit.

Mr. Goldie fell in love with my son, then me (we came as a package deal!). Long story short(er) he married us when Matthew was 4, and shortly there after he adopted him. Matthews sperm donor decided that it was too much trouble to pay his child support so easier to sign him over! We got married, I got pregnant 3 months later and we had another son. The rest is history~~ it will be 27 years of marriage this June 4th!

  4. Morning Glories!

Tina I have to say your pretty is getting obnoxious! :)

Mr. Lynn D and I met when a friend of mine had to go collect rent from her tenant. The tenant was the manager of Zales in our home town. Mr. Lynn D was the asst. manager. We got there and they asked us out. From that simple task I have now been married 25 years. You just never know.

Did I see stars and hearts? No just met a nice guy and it moved on from there.

Hope everyone has a great day! I have a bazillion errands to run, because freaking Chicago is in two days!!!!!!

  5. Well, I found the other 2 cars, but quit early cuz dang, I'm flippin' sick. Really.

Tina, YOU fell in love with a geek?

Funny, how we end up with the people we do. Goldie, that's an especially endearing story, about Mr. Goldie and your first son. That's a real man.

  6. Good morning everyone!

    Tina, I agree with LynnD!
Your big red lips are a little startling to see first thing in the morning! Please leave that lip tube in Utah this week end!

I will be gone most of the day. I am heading north to visit my brother who is still in a nursing home. He moved to one further away from me.

I met my present hubby at a local bar. We both worked the 2nd shift, he at General Motors and me at Chrysler. A group of us would meet at the "Log Cabin" for a couple drinks after work. This one Friday night we were all way too tipsy and were dancing and flirting around. I noticed a guy standing by himself at the bar. He was tall blue eyed, with med length blond hair (gone now lol). He looked strong, shy, but very confident, which was what really attracted me to him.My first huz"sperm donor"
(ty Goldie) was wimpy with hunched shoulders.
Some how everyone got paired off, me with a short dark haired cutie and him with a blond biotch lol!
We went to Mr Mary's house (Jim) and sat around talked and listened to music. Everyone left and I was too drunk to drive so Jim let me sleep on his couch. He was so sweet. The next day I knew he was the one for me. He was a gentleman, he still is kinda lol!!

    Have a great day everyone!

  7. TINA - Great blog!! I picked my hubby up at a Country Bar on a Sunday afternoon. We danced, drank, and he took my breath away!! We dated for a little over a year when I decided that I didn't want to be his "doormat" anymore. When I got home from visiting my youngest brother Dale in Norfolk I broke it off with Paul. Two things stand out about that day.....the first time he told me he loved me, and the first time I saw him cry. I was trying to be tough and told him....too little too late. I stuck to my guns for almost 2 months (in the meantime he kept calling and sending flowers), but for whatever reason, I couldn't get him out of my heart. I finally agreed to dinner, and to take things slow. I know that God had His hand in my taking him back, because not long after that happened, Dale was in the car crash that took his life. Paul was there for me then and has been ever since. We got engaged in Dec of 1988 and married the next September. This fall we will celebrate 21 years. All from what I used to tease my Mom was a "one night stand".....but it's TRUE!!!

  8. BARB - Such a sweet story....you're lucky to have had him for as long as you did ♥

GOLDIE - I knew your story. MR. G is the BEST!!! And he mixes a damn fine cocktail....what's not to love?!!?

LYNN - Congrats on 25 years. That's really saying something in this day and age.

    BONACHICHI - Feel better soon!!

MARY - Nothing wrong with being a gentleman!! I hope you enjoy your time with your brother today ♥

  9. Good Morning!

TINA: I met Mr Z at work. His brother was my boss and he was coming in to talk to him about something or other. I heard him drive up..he had AC/DC blasting from the stereo of his '66 Mustang. He came walking in wearing jeans, a tight white t-shirt and mirrored sunglasses. He was a really pushing the James Dean look..lol. He was didn't talk much..which I interpreted as being cool..but he was really just shy. I don't think I've told anyone, but I actually tried to break up with him about four months after we started dating. I just thought he was too nice a guy and I didn't deserve him. I thank God every day that he didn't take me up on this but instead responded by getting down on one knee..I'm not kidding!..and asking me to marry him. We have our up and down days..but 26 years later, to quote an old song "We're still having fun, and he's still the one..."

    Great blog TINA!

  10. TINA: Ha! backatcha gorgeous!

    I don't smack him..but I pinch..it has the same effect.. ;)

    BARB: I loved reading about how you met your hubby..it truly was destiny. {{hugs}}

GOLDIE: "Hooked but not interested" oh I so understand this..

LYNN: It just goes to prove you don't always need fireworks..ya know?

MARY: Being a gentlemen is a good thing..Mr Z still opens doors for me..can you believe it? Probably is afraid I'll run into them otherwise... ;)

JODI: The 'for whatever reason' sounds like true love to me. :)

BONACHI: I was just kidding with the field and the falling..but it really wouldn't be that far fetched for me.. :D

  12. I met Bill when he was hired to work in another one of our locations, but sent to train at my store. I saw him from a distance and thought...YOWZA! I hadn't even had a chance to speak to him or introduce myself when he walked into my office and said there was a customer that was trying to Jew him down on a price. I went off on him. I didn't care how gorgeous he was! I informed him that I, and the owners of the company that write his paycheck were Jewish and if he ever used that phrase again he would be fired on the spot. This was a multi-culteral company and NO derogatory remarks about any ethnicity or religion were tolerated.

Well, he apologized profusely and repeatedly. He even had to mention his brother-in-law was Jewish.

After that, he was like the class kiss-up!! The new store opened and he went on to work there. I had to go to supervise the grand opening and he asked me out for a cigarette. I told him I had to go to the office to get my purse and he said..."no you don't, I switched to your brand!" I was in love! A few weeks later, we had our company holiday party and his car was dead, so I drove him. He lived far away so he stayed at my place and was, as Mary said, a real gentleman...TOO MUCH! We did become pretty much inseparable after that, but the bastard waited another couple of weeks for the first kiss! I told him I was waiting for that for weeks and he said so was he and why didn't I just kiss him first!!

We stayed to together on and off for about 5 years. He had a drinking problem and all our fights were when he was drunk. I finally realized that as much as he loved me, he loved the booze more. I decided I didn't need that and finally ended it...or so I thought. I moved back to Cleveland not long after and we had a long distance relationship. I went back to L.A quite a bit. One night he drunk dialed me with some drunken bitch with him. That truly was the last straw. We haven't spoken in years.

I still miss him and wonder what could have been.

  13. I did meet my share of geeks, and I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt...like TINA and Mr. TINA, but alas...they were still geeks!!!

  16. MO - Paul loved Miller Lite more than me or the kids for years, but thankfully he has been sober for almost 3 years. He was so scared that I was going to divorce him when he got sober (my brother did this when his wife finally did), but my bottom line was that I still loved him....and more importantly still wanted to jump him ♥♥♥

  17. ZONA - I think it's so sweet how he holds your elbow around a store ♥

  18. Oh you are so funny Tina!!! Let's see, which husband shall I pick to write about? How about this bar, bar, bar, online.

MrD and I met online two years after my husband had passed away. We talked for a long time and then finally met each other. He liked me more than I liked him to begin with but he grew on me. He is kind of ...no is...a geek too!! We dated for a year and then got married and have now been married over seven years..not a record yet for me :) (might as well say it before little miss TINA does for me).

I too love him a lot but he can get on my last nerve often!!!!

It is fun reading all the stories today. My best friend I met in a bar too and she and I have been friends for about 20 years now. I don't go to bars anymore but did in my day. Well, I still go but different kind of bar now that I am old.

Thanks for the blog today TIna and I know I said I would help and write one and I will but I have really been under the weather from my two "accountants" yesterday. It has been one of the most miserable weekends and Mondays that I have had in a long long time.

    ReplyDelete
  19. DIANNE - I'm so sorry you're still paying that damn accountant...it must be very taxing!! ;) Seriously, I hope this is the end of that nonsense and you have found some relief!!!

  20. Mr. B and I met because my Mom was moving. She had a guy she was dating who was friends with my hubby and he asked him to help. Mr. B brought over his van and helped move her stuff. I thought he was really "worldly". I was 19 and hadn't really met anyone quite like him. He was handsome and very funny. He was a real man when all I had been with were boys. So, he moved my mom a lot since then. He finally retired from it though..lol. We've had our ups and downs but overall it has been a really nice life. I have 3 beautiful children and I love my family and my life. OH and he had a motorcycle and a really nice butt. Our first date was lunch.

  22. Well doesn't this just suck. There I am, getting some much needed sleep and my computer beeps. It might be important, so I drag my arse out of dreamland to see what sort of event made it beep. Nothing! I mean, it had to be something, but damned if I can figure out what!

So now it's about 3 in the flippin morning and I'm wide awake. My body still thinks it's yesterday and my brain doesn't know what to believe. The disorientation has begun.

Some of you might remember that the last time I tried to leave this stupid island, I had a spot of trouble with a government or two. I'm only a little terrified of that. I wouldn't survive jail. They don't serve vegetarian in jail.

  24. Oh, Carol! So sorry to hear of what's been happening! Maybe it's good for you to get away for a time? You can't be everywhere for everyone all the time. It seems I've told you before that if you don't take care of yourself, you can't take care of others. It pains me to be the one to tell you this, but you are not Wonder Woman, Superman, James Bond and Indiana Jones all rolled into one.

Your friends and family do need you. We all do. Maybe that's selfish of all of us. But we need you to take care of you so you can be there for us. Give yourself permission to forget everything except having a good time. Life will be waiting for you when you get back, yes?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Carol: I am so sorry to hear that too. I hope that he can get the seizures under control. They do have good medications for that these days. My aunt used to have seizures and they got hers under control.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Carol, dear~ It's SO good that IS is being monitored. Although he prolly doesn't want to be in the hospital, at least he's "safe"...kwim? And it's a good sign that he wants to farm~ :D Hope Sal is doing better soon~

Thanks everyone for sharing ur stories....especially you, DeeDee~ :)~

    I'm off to bed~ mwah~

  27. Okay Tina, I went back through all the comments and I didn't see DeeDee's ....hmmmmmmmmm

    ReplyDelete
  28. I didn't see a word from DeeDee today. Tina, what'd you do to piss her off? Steal one of her voodoo dolls?

I don't remember meeting Mr. B for the first time. One of my earliest memories of him is when, for no good reason at all, he took off all his clothes except his socks and jumped into a fountain.

    ReplyDelete
  29. LOL Bonachichi..that is funny. Another one of the first memories I have of my Mr. is when I was laying out and had my eyes kind of closed and saw him oggling my big boobies..roflmao. That is when I new he had the hots for me like I did for him..hahaha

Correction for MARY: IT was ZONA that had to go wash the stinky clothes! That's okay as you are getting older and all......

  33. Carol, that is really sobering! All best wishes for a good outcome here.

Well, Huz and I met on the tennis court. That was back in the late 80's, and although I thought he was totally cute from the first, I was with somebody else for eight years. As that relationship was going south, though, Jim and I got together, and it was literally love at first, er, sex. And that was 13 years ago!
