Di and I went on an Architecture Tour when we were in Chicago. We cruised up and down the river and got to see a lot of the different styles of buildings in the city. It was very interesting and we both enjoyed it, for the most part. Chicago has one of the most recognizable skylines in the world. I cracked up when we passed the NBC building. There is so much going on in the city and so much to see....and what was I doing? I was recognizing all the spots where ER filmed it's outside shots.
We went past the old Sears Tower and the "corn cob buildings!" (see pics) The person who designed the "corn cobs" must have been on something when he thought up these weird looking things~ There is one spot on the tour where all modes of transportation intersect. It's on the flight path for the airport, the bridge over the river holds cars, bikes, pedestrians, and buses, boats travel under the bridge, and the subway is underneath it all. I thought that was cool!
What really strikes me as funny, though, is the fact that, although we sat right next to each other, we had two very different experiences. We sat down in the middle of the boat and were followed by a family of two parents, a set of grandparents, and two children (one infant and one 2 yr old). They sat in the row behind us to the left. They were from India and didn't speak any English, so while the tour guide was giving his spiel, they talked amongst themselves....VERY LOUDLY!!! I'm pretty okay with that. I've learned to be in a room with my children and husband and won't hear a word any of them say. I'm really good at tuning them out, so I just tuned out the family.
What I couldn't tune out was the husband's cough. It was constant and LOUD! And, of course, he couldn't cover his mouth. Thank God he sat on the side of the boat for most of the time, but when he moved to sit behind me, I about died. I kept picturing all these germs flying into my hair! ewwwwww~ It so grossed me out. When I said something to Di afterward, she looked at me like I was on crack and said she didn't even know the man was coughing.
What really bothered her was the grandfather playing with the toddler. He kept making her giggle and "coochie coochie cooing" her! I looked at her like SHE was on crack! I didn't hear him at all. I thought the grandparents were pretty quiet compared to the parents!
We laugh now about it, but at the time, we both wanted to throttle those people! Especially since the rest of the boat was pretty much empty~ One other thing worth mentioning......after the cruise, we both had some questions that we were going to ask the tour guide, but instead, Di stopped this YOUNG, CUTE boy who was helping dock the boat. I couldn't stop laughing afterward. I was scared that I would have to find another room for the night with the way she was all over that kid!!! Just kidding~ :D .....maybe~
pretty~
ReplyDeleteoh yay!!! i got first!!!~ Yay Me!!~ :D
ReplyDeletewhere's bebbi???! :)~
ReplyDeleteRight here..sulking. haha.
ReplyDeleteLove the architectural tour pics. My daughter would have loved to see all those buildings. The only thing I saw was the inside of a random hotel lobby..haha. Oh, and the Outback!
ReplyDeleteNot complaining though, I can drive up to Chicago anytime..you guys were from far far away..
ReplyDeleteMorning Glories!
ReplyDeleteTina got first. yay. said deadpan. Look I will throw a parade when I don't see Eunice in that spot for a few days.
Tina I loved, loved, loved the architecture in Chicago! The old Sears Tower is now known by Willis tower unless you are a Chicagoan. They still call it the Sears Tower.
What I loved was the mix of old Chicago with new and mid century modern Chicago.
I was really impressed with the Aqua building. I have a great pic of it. I just got my pictures downloaded but Mr. Lynn D has not loaded the editing software on my computer yet! :(
The corn cob buildings according to our Guide, were built as part of a planned community, with theaters, shops, school etc.... You would never have to go outside your complex for anything. The plan failed and the building basically did not do well. The planned community was closed. Then later the buildings were used in a Steve McQueen movie (I can't remember the name, Barb can you or JustLin?) and then history was changed and to this day the units sell like crazy.
At least this is what I remember the guide telling us.
I remember you two getting off the boat and being very, very annoyed with that family. We had our own distractions on our tour with some kids that were screaming. If looks could freeze someone on the spot I think J/L and Sacbarb could freeze the nation. imjs :)
Good morning you pretty blogging Ho!
ReplyDeleteLiked hearing your different experiences and thoughts on the tour. What is most interesting to me is to hear about Chicago from People who are seeing it for the first time.
Like anything else that is familiar to you, you don't appreciate it.
tina~ whenever there is something shot in Chicago I always am looking at the backdrop to see if I recognize it. Did you get to see the fountain that was used in the opening of Married with Children?
To all of us in and around Chicago (I was born there and lived there until I was 7) it will always be the Sears Tower. Just like the Wrigley building- an institution.
Well, I was going to write about my inspection yesterday - but I have gone on long enough. Perhaps I will turn it into a blog instead!
I was going to comment on yesterdays inspection
Mornin' hooters! I am up early today because I have luncheon. I am not good with mornings! I have to admit, the puppy has almost turned me into a day owl!
ReplyDeleteTina, I wish I could have stayed longer to go on that tour. I would have loved it if you or Di would have asked me to stay longer. I would have done it in a flash! jk
Actually they did try to get me to change my plans, but Mr Mary would have killed me, since he was puppy sitting lol!
Tina, I am ignoring you prettiness today and giving Bebbi the kudos.
Congrats on #4 Bebbi!!!!
Have a great day everyone. bbl
Waving at Goldie & LynnD~~~~
ReplyDeleteHa Ha Tina, so there..I got first on Wednesday..because people are just so tired of you being first..hehe...neener neener!
ReplyDeleteyo HO!~ Mary said congrats on #4, NOT #1....she still acknowledged that i got it....she's just ignoring~ SO THERE!!!~
ReplyDeleteWhere? haha..okay. okay..but I did get your feathers all in a fluff for a minute..didn't I? lol.
ReplyDeleteDO NOT fluff me!!!~ :)~
ReplyDeleteTina and Dianne: Every time I get on a plane, I glance around to see how close the nearest family with a baby/toddler is. And then I start to worry about how prone to screaming and crying the youngster is. And if the early signals are not good... I start to want to throttle the parents! LOL!
ReplyDeleteChicago looked great! The airport was grand, the hotel lobby divine, and Outback was ultra-elegant! LOL!
Whabby: LOL, but I did get to drive and I would have that the traffic is INTERESTING.
ReplyDeleteTina Congrats on first, Little Miss Sunshine.
ReplyDeleteBebbi Congrats on being first runner-up.
LynnD The Steve McQueen movie that had the corn cob building in it was "The Hunter". Thank goodness those obnoxiously loud children were only on our trolly for a short time at the end of the tour. I don't understand why parents don't parent and teach their children how to behave in public.
Mary I'm not good with mornings, either, except for sleeping in. I'm real good at that. ;)
Goldie Well, that was a bit of a tease; making us wait for your blog until telling us how the inspection went.
Bear On the flight home from Chicago, there was a baby right across the aisle from me. He was just with his Daddy who kept him entertained until he fell asleep for the rest of the flight. Yay! We lucked out on that one.
Tina2 I totally loved the trolly tour we went on, too. Such interesting architecture and stories behind them. It is a fascinating city with a very rich history. Our guide also went into the corruption in the city, past and present. Some of his comments about the present-day police make me very nervous for him. It is a great city, though, and I would love to visit again.
TINA-EUNICE is always 1st & prettiest in my book. LINDA told me after your boat excursion your hair looked especially shiney.
ReplyDeleteBEBBI-Since you mostly saw the hotel lobby, you were seeing Chicago from a hookers point of view.
LYNN-You are so right about Slin freezing things with her looks. Once she froze a wart right of my face just by looking at it.
And a a good morning to BEAR, GOLDIE & MARY
Lani: Hookers...Hooters..just one letter differentiates us..haha. Kinda scary actually. ;)
ReplyDeleteLani: Also, if I was a hooker, I would be busy all day up in the rooms...only sparingly down in the lobby..because, of course, I would be extremely desired by my clientele..haha.
ReplyDeleteA quickie from work!
ReplyDeleteI love Chicago, dad was born and raised there and I lived there as a kid.
Loved the Shedd aquariam and zoo there, it's a beautiful city.
SacBarb thanx for the info on Nipomo. I remembered after I posted that someone (probably you) had addressed that on a blog from the past. I had never heard of it before!
Oh I think the life/science museum in Chicago (can't remember the name of it) had (and probably still has) a human body cut into sections so you can see inside.
ReplyDeleteSlan LOL!
ReplyDeleteBEBBI- I did notice rug burn on your knees in the picture of you in Chicago ;)
ReplyDeleteEBJ- Give POE a big kiss on the beak and a hug for NANCY from me.
Hi--just for the record that boat helper was a huba huba--and he liked me too, right Tina?
ReplyDeleteI loved the cruise but those people were on my last nerve. They were so. Loud and weren't listening one bit to the guide. I just think it was rude. I asked Tina if she wanted to move but she didn't hear me over that noise and I really didn't hear the guy cough once Tina didn't mention that we had to walk about ten miles after we bought the boat ticket. I thought I was going to die. She was so sweet to keep waiting for me
The history and the beauty of the city was wonderful. I loved all the flowers too
We r enjoying our family laughing and visiting. We wen to a great Italian place for lunch on a river walk in The Woodlands. Yummy lunch.
ReplyDeleteIt is only 87 today with the humidity about the same. It is really pretty and green though.
Bebbi, I think u can be first tomorrow as it is Tinas weekend. Well, great blog and hello to all the owls.
omg Lani~ I read your post just before leaving work~ I lmbo the whole way home~ ur a freaking hoot~
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the comments~ It's fun to hear what the other hooters thought of the city....except for the tramps who never left the hotel~ :)~ I have been to Chicago before and I think my favorite places were the Aquarium and the museum we took the kids to~ :D

ReplyDeleteHi Everyone!
ReplyDeleteTINA: Thanks for the mini-tour some of Chicago's more notable buildings. I loved the pics! I think it would be fun to walk around a big city like that and
just look up..you know..like the opening of 'That Girl'? It's cool to see the architecture of different cities..and to hear the stories about the buildings. I wasn't surprised to hear that Di found another boyfriend..she seems to have a knack for that!! :D
Great blog today TINA, you pretty thang, thank you! :D
EBJ: Ewww..for real? I wouldn't want to see that! Can you imagine donating your body to science and having it ending up in a museum? They better dress me first..js..
J/LIN: I once had to watch a 3 year old on a flight from Ca to Az..his mother and sister slept in the row across the aisle. There was a seat between them..but I guess they wanted him next to me. Considering he was at the 'beginning to cry' stage the whole flight..I can see why!!
BEAR: I get more upset with the parent's then the screaming children too..
GOLDIE: I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the inspection went well..I hope this limb doesn't break.. ;) :)
TINA2: There's an aquarium opening here next month..I can't wait to go see it!
Waving HI to LYNN, BEBBI, MARY and cousin LANI!
Tomorrow is supposed to be our first 100 degree day..countdown has begun..how many days til October? ;)
Have a good night everyone..I'm off to put some frozen corn on my neck.. :D
(Delete was mine..seems I need to double check my spacing..lol..)
Well..screwed it up again..oh well..I'm going to blame the headache and the heat and just leave it this time.. :D
ReplyDeleteSlan How do you come up with this stuff? LMAO!
ReplyDeleteZona Sorry about your headache. I hope you feel better soon. Maybe you're using the wrong vegetable. Try frozen peas. ;)
ReplyDeleteLani: LOL, yes, I got rug burns..taking that darn picture of all of us! haha.
ReplyDeleteTina: This tramp did drive through Chicago twice going to and from the OTHER airport! haha..have the video to prove it too! :)
Okay..off to work out..bbl.
Happy Wednesday Owls.
ReplyDeleteTina, You got some really good pics of the same things we saw. None of mine turned out too good. Oh yeah, happy first.
Lynn, Whatever do you mean about a "look?"
J/L, We should have complimented that Daddy on his and his baby's behavior to let him know how appreciated it was.
Lani, LMBO @ 'rug burn'
EBJ, YW
Zona, You sweet thang. I just got a very big surprise in the mail. TYVM. ♥
Carol, I hope things are OK with you and your family. You are in my thoughts. ♥
I hope everyone had a good day.
TINA-lmbo @ "except for the tramps who never left the hotel"
ReplyDeleteCOUSIN ZONA-Maybe a neck and shoulder message would help your headache. I hope it is gone when you wake up.
Since some of you know Nipomo, you'll know it's a wild-west sort of town. There's a bull-riding school there, and some real old-time cowboys.
ReplyDeleteNot much architecture like Chicago, though. We settled for walking on stilts in the bull ring, until the bull knocked us (them) off. Then learned several new ways to exit a bull ring whilst running for your life.
We helped Nipomo fashion by introducing earpiercing to them. As in, you nail your ear to a piece of wood. You can nail several people to the same piece of wood and turn it into a game of follow the leader.
There wasn't a lake or snow, so we made our own ski-course. Hay, a mud-trap, jumps, etc. then pulled the "skiiers" through it with a horse.
And who can leave Nipomo without a brand on your arse? I can, but some of the others couldn't.
And you fuddie-duddies think the Owls from around there live such a calm life! Don't let them fool you!
Sorry, Tina, for going off subject... I wasn't with you all in Chicago, and am not part of what we now call the "Chicago 13", so I've not much to add.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we'll base jump from one of the skyscrapers and land in Lake Michigan... then I can write about Chicago.
Dear Lord,
ReplyDeleteI want to thank you for something silly! Thanks for the two finalists on American Idol! :D
xoxoxoxo t~
p.s.~ Why didn't you tell me that Lee is Catholic?
What about the Water Tower? Are they still claiming Mrs. What's-her-name's cow started the Great Chicago Fire?
ReplyDeleteNipomo does sounds wild, Bonachichi.
ReplyDeleteI am so tired..worked out late again which does help me sleep..so I am off to bed...night all..sweet dreams!!
freaking hell....finally~ I've posted and it goes bye-bye....wtc!!! I see you Bonachichi~
ReplyDeleteHave you ever been to Chicago? If not...then definitely go and jump off something~ :)~
Tina, I have been to Chicago. Several times, in fact. Setting up a Base-jumping stunt from one of the buildings fronting Lake Michigan is my idea of fun in Chicago. If you're going to enjoy the architecture, you may as well REALLY enjoy it.
ReplyDeletelmbo!!!!! I hope this one posts....this is the last thing posted that I can see:

THAT, honey....is not my idea of fun....my idea of fun would have been to drive out to Joliet to see the race track~ did we do that......noooooooooo...Di couldn't be bothered!!! lq~ actually...i didn't think of it til now~
omg!!!! I can see all the posts now!!! thank you Jesus~ (I knew I had written to you earlier!) :D
ReplyDeleteBonachichi~ They are in fact NOT claiming that she set the fire~
Bebbi~ Goodnight~
Tina, I know years ago, the cow was blamed for kicking over a lantern. Mrs. What's-her-name too a lot of heat for it. Then some historians discovered that would have been impossible; the blame (as far as I know) now goes to a ranch hand.
ReplyDeleteAs far as going to a race-track, I'm more of a do-kind-of gal. I don't like to watch things. Sure, I'd probably have joined you in Joliet, but I'd be busy trying to get to places I'm not supposed to be. You know, Restricted Access?
Bonachichi, Did you go to Jocko's when you were in Nipomo?
ReplyDeleteTINA - This tramp is chiming in ;) I'm glad you went on that tour. The pics are great!! I've been up in the Sears Tower...and the view is stunning!! Next time I think it would be fun to do the boat tour!! And as far as Joliet is concerned....I would've totally gone!! Enjoy your "weekend"!!
ReplyDeleteZONA - Thanks for the company on the way down to the funeral!!
BARB - Thanks for riding with me on the way home ♥
I hope everyone has a great Thursday. I got back late (almost 11) from LOIS's Mom's funeral. I am now slamming coffee and praying that I make it thru my shift. But it was totally worth it!! Luv u LOIS ♥
SacB; Yes. The guys who didn't get branded went to Jocko's. I stayed behind because it would be stupid for me to go to a steakhouse. They've been there before; we always go to Nipomo when we need bulls.
