The Strange Flight Home

by Bebbi

I got to the airport really early. I had a nice salad for lunch and the plane arrived twenty five minutes early so they did pre-boarding early too. When I got on I sat down in the front row on the left. I wanted to be able to get out fast when I got home because Mr. B was coming to pick me up and I didn’t want to make him wait too long.

When I sat down there was an older man at the window and a younger man in the aisle seat. I know that people are always disappointed when someone takes their “extra” middle seat so I felt a little guilty. I didn’t realize the seats in the front row had no under storage so I had my bags under my legs. The flight attendant had me put them up in the overheard which was fine. I was really glad that we were going to get off on time and then the last minute this girl comes on….

The first thing I hear is, “I need a bloody mary”, and around the corner she appears, this girl who was young and very pretty but definitely disheveled. She was small and cute and had what looked like mascara running down her face. She smelled of alcohol and went to the back of the plane. Everyone in the front really took notice and eyebrows went up and there were a few comments about how she really needed her bloody mary. We laughed because we all thought she was a drunk flier. So the flight attendant is preparing us to depart and guess who holds up the show??...yep, you guessed it..

“Bloody Mary Girl” was in the restroom and the flight attendant had to get on the speaker and tell her to find her seat. It was one of those situations when you just shake your head and really wonder about people. So, the younger man beside me was really nice and we started talking. We joked about bloody mary girl and he was very kind and flirting with me. He told me I looked 35 and that really made me laugh. But we had a good laugh over Bloody Mary Woman.., he would look back and see what was going on. So, after our delay we got up in the air fine and we went through the 58 minute flight, it went by fast with Mr. Flirty Thirty Something. He was so cute! Right after we landed I grabbed my bags quickly. I hurried downstairs and put my purse and carry on in my car I told Mr. B I had to go in and get my luggage. I went back in and the turnstile that had our flight on wasn’t working any longer. After a few minutes they said over the speakers that another turnstile was the only one working and had us go one over to it. I walked to the far end away from the cute thirty something flirty guy…and was standing at the other end. Well, I noticed someone crouching on the floor. Sure enough, it was “Bloody Mary Girl”. She was on the floor and almost in tears with pain! The “mascara” was actually a black EYE and her arm was hurting and she couldn’t get her large checked bag off the turnstile. I told her not to worry and I would grab it. Her bag was a large taped up broken bag. She told me her boyfriend had beaten her up and her mom was picking her up to take her to the emergency room.

I got the bag off the turnstile and then realized that I couldn’t carry her bag and pull my own. So, I looked across the turnstile and 30 something’s eyes and mine met and I motioned to ask him to come over. He didn’t hesitate and came right over. I told him the situation and asked him to help carry out her bag. He was so funny and kind. He carried the bag outside for her and I stood with her until her mom came. I really could have given him a big hug and kiss for jumping in and helping like that. When we were walking over to go outside he was asking the girl what happened and she said it was a “long story”..well, while we were on the flight he was asking me things and I told him they were a long story too. While we were walking he said, ‘Well, I guess I am never going to get to hear the long story!” He sounded so downhearted and It made me laugh and realize that a lot of women (and men too) have, “Long stories”. I waited with her while her Mom drove down to us. “Blood Mary Girl” gave me a hug and thanked me several times and so did her mom as I put her big bag in the back of their truck for her. So, from this I really learned that I shouldn’t judge people so quickly. I had no idea that this poor girl was beat up and not just a drunk woman on a flight. I did give her information about the Women’s Center and felt like a real bad person for judging her when these are the people that I volunteer to help!

Have you ever judged something too hastily and then realized your mistake later? I thought this was also a good thing to ask because of all of us meeting too. We all think about how we “think” someone is and then when you meet, it may be different. Or, you meet someone and after getting to know them realize that there is so much more. I am excited to hear your comments on this one.

  2. Hiya, Bebbi!! Great blog. Terrific blog!! What a story. I'm not surprised to hear you helped the gal out. I'm also not surprised Flirty Thirty was flirting with you. I always judge people. It's what I do. Then I step back, recognize that I have to give people a chance and reset my meter.

I can't stop judging books by their covers, but I can remember to set that aside and open the dang thing up.

  3. Morning Bonachichi~! Yes, it was an interesting flight. So unbelievably unexpected. I am so glad that Mr. Thirty Flirty was so kind. :) He was so good looking..really tall and had the most deep brown eyes.

Poor Bloody Mary Girl too ..I do hope she got help. Her mom seemed very nice. I felt so bad.

  4. I like how you said "reset my meter" that is a good way to look at it.

  5. And, I was so surprised about Flirty Thirty..I am sure the word Couger came up with his coworkers..LOL..he was an electrictian and traveling in for work with some others.

  6. They were standing there when I motioned him over..lol.

  7. Sometimes when you "open the book" you find amazing stories..! That is so true. I think it's good to occasionally open the book and get to know people. :)

  8. Good Morning!

BEBBI: I try so hard not to make judgements about anyone that I really don't know. Sometimes though, it just happens.

After 25 years, our neighbors two houses down moved away. The people who moved into their house seemed very nice, but kept to themselves. I would see the husband outside working in the yard or car almost every time I would go for a walk. I'm a pretty friendly person and I think it's just good to get to know your neighbors..so every time I would go by I would say HI! He never answered..in fact he never even turned around! I didn't give up..I would always say hello as I walked past..no answer. After a while I was getting kind of embarrassed and a little grumpy about the whole thing and I stopped saying anything to him. About 2 weeks later I was talking to one of my other neighbors and told her how strange I thought it was, and rude..that our new neighbor didn't even turn around and say hello when I went out of my way to say something to him. She looked at me for a second and said "He can't hear you..he's deaf." Omg..I felt like I could have sunk through the floor. I felt so stupid. The very next day, when I saw him out in his garage I went up to him and introduced myself. He smiled the most beautiful smile and we have been friends ever since.

As I said..I'm usually so careful..but sometimes you just jump to conclusions without thinking.

You are a wonderful writer BEBBI..I loved your blog. PLUS..you are just gorgeous today! :)

    ReplyDelete
  9. Zona: Oh, that a good example of making the wrong assumption too. I have a step mom who is totally deaf and people thought she was being rude at times like that. It really made her sad. I am glad you figured it out though and it's never to late to start a good friendship. :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. I thought it was rather unique that just when I needed to get help, it just so happens that the most gorgeous, hunky man was right there to help me. It felt so like destiny! Like someone was figuring things out for me along the way..ya know?

  11. Morning Glories!

Bebbi you are beautiful this morning!

Great Blog! I think most of us have a judgement at first glance when we see people. That is why people watching is so fascinating.

One of the best quotes I have ever heard was by Joan Rivers of all people. "Every person has a story that will break your heart" that is so true. I try to keep that in mind when I jump to conclusions. We all do it and at times regret that later. Tho I have to say there are some people who I have thought wow what a great person to find out later, NOT so great. I had a volunteer lately that turned out to be the case.

I feel so bad about that girl but I see where everyone on the plane would have had the same thought. I probably would have to. To your credit you stopped and helped, you and flirty guy. That is what caring good people do. Not surprised because that is how you struck me in Chicago. Kudos to you!

    ReplyDelete
  12. LynnD: I love people watching too! I got to the airport that day and was able to do that for quite a while. It's so fun and intersting. I didn't know you liked that too.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh and thanks for all the beautiful comments..although, I am tacky for doing it..I am glowing today. :) You guys are awesome, have I said that lately?

  14. MO: I'm sorry I missed your blog yesterday. I'm having some back issues and can't sit at the computer for very long.

I loved reading your observations on everyone. You have such a wonderful way of describing things..your blog was just so fun to read..as were the comments. I haven't read them all..but I will.

I'm not surprised that everyone got along so well. One thing about the nest is we all open our hearts for each other..and we let it all hang out. No real surprises. That's got to be rare for any blog..but so very very cool.

I've started a M&G account..I will not miss the next one!! I might even take out digit insurance on Mr Z! ;)

  15. Shirley and Bebbi, The new freezer we got for the food bank is just fine. It is an upright freezer like you would have at home.

The freezer that went out yesterday is our big storage freezer it is a walk in unit. It has a refrigerator in front and a freezer in the back like they use in restaurants. This is the one we keep having problems with. It was bought second hand with a grant.

I have now named it Ornery. We have a love hate relationship.

    ReplyDelete
  16. LynnD: I thought so, I remembered you saying it was an upright. Sounds like a good nickname for the walk in..LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  17. LynnD: I agree about finding out people are "not so great", but usually my intuition is right about people so that hasn't happened very often in my life. It is harder when it is people we work with because you don't get to choose them..and they can put on a good front for a while. But, that usually does wear off if they are "not so good".

  18. The biggest dissapointments I had were with coworkers..when I was a manager I had a trusted Assistant manager steal from the company. Although, she got into drugs so I say that changed her.. She went down really fast after she got into drugs.

  19. Good Morning Hooters!

Today is the day- the grandkids will be here this afternoon. Can I get a 'woot' 'woot'?

Bebbi- how kind of you to help that girl. You and flirty 30 where probably the nicest thing to happen to her that day.

Well, lets see- I judged Mr. Goldie to be a self centered ass the 1st time I met him. OOPS, my bad.

The city came and chopped down what was left of my still standing tree. So now I have to get on them to come stump it out and plant a new one. Hopefuly before the end of Summer!

Don't know if I will be on much once the kids get here. my Mom coming to stay tomorrow for the weekend and having Mothers Day Brunch for everyone here and
my bro and his family are coming up along with a couple of friends.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUST LIN!!!!!! I hope you have a wonderful day- because you are one wonderful lady!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Goldie: LOL at what you thought about MR. G..he's such a sweetheart. You are a lucky lady that you "opened that book"! :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUST LIN!! :) Hope your day is super terrific!

  21. Goldie: Oh, and have fun with those grandkids...! I am jealous!

  23. I'm sad today. Woke up with the news that my friend's mom passed away earlier this morning. They were neighbors of ours for many many years. Mary was 88 soon to be 89 on the 26th. The first job I ever had was in their corner store. I remember one time taking Mary and her daughter Roxanne (my friend) to the airport. I think Roxanne was flying out to Alberta. Mary and I were there to see her off. Anyway on the way home my car ran out of gas (gas gage didn't work...only paid $150.00 for the whole car) between two exits to Bridgewater. I looked at Mary and said "Well I guess this is where we walk." She looked back at me and said "Correction, this is where YOU walk and I take a nap!" So I went and got help and she did indeed take a nap!

    Mary you will be missed.

  24. Shirley: I am so sorry for your loss. HUGS!! :(

  25. Bebbi I didn't mean to make your wonderful blog a downer. Sorry. What you did for that girl will be something she will never forget. A hand reached out to her and it didn't hurt her, it helped her. It doesn't matter what happened on the plain...the moment you reached out to her is what she will remember. I'm very happy to call you my friend! ((HUGS))

    ReplyDelete
  26. Shirley: BIG HUGS..to you! And, you did not make it a downer. Your dear friend died and you are sad. That is good that you remember the time she made you laugh because she would want you to smile and remember. That's the way its supposed to be. :) I am NOT letting the next meeting go without you being there because you are near and dear to everyone's heart here and we need you there. I think the Owls need to go to Canada! :) Hey, Geese fly there..why can't owls? haha.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks Bebbi!

Happy Birthday Just Lin! I hope you have a fantastic day! ((HUGS))

    ReplyDelete
  28. Good observation about those geese, Bebbi! And speaking of Canada, there's one owl who I omitted from my list in A51 of who I wish had been in Chicago. Audrey, of course!

Meanwhile, Bebbi, great blog, and I'm wracking my brains to think of someone that I had a bad first impression of, and then things turned around. Maybe Carol?

Just kidding!!!!! Your blog certainly brought home the wisdom of that old saying, though: Never judge a man until he's walked a mile in Tina's shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  29. omg!!! Bear, you make me laugh~

    Happy Birthday, J/L~

Shirley~ I'm so sorry about ur friend~ I'm glad you can share the good memories about her....your story reminded me of DeeDee.....she's so be the nap taker~

Bebbi~ DeeDee is doing a good deed toay (don't tell her I told you). She took her friend to the mall....not a trip that she enjoys~ She's been taking pictures of funny clothes and sending them to me~

I love ur blog~ I totally cheated and read it a couple of days ago~ I always judge too quickly....I know it's wrong, but maybe I do it so I can be so pleasantly surprised when I'm wrong~ It's like getting a really great gift at christmas~

Hi Bonachichi, Zona, Lynndie, Goldie, and naughty Bear~

    ReplyDelete
  30. I will tell u all after rooming with tina, she may be tall (I didn't think she was all that tall) but she has little tiny feet/shoes

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm at the hospital waiting for dad~ He's getting his chemo right now~ I'll prolly be here a while~ I'm so glad they have free wifi here~

Great news: All dad's counts are down!!! The doc said to finish this 3rd round of chemo, go thru the 4th round, and if everything is still down, we'll look at changing his meds or getting him off them. YAY! I'm so happy~ I can't wait till my sis has a break and can call me so I can tell her! In the meantime.....I'm telling you~ :D

    ReplyDelete
  32. Bebbi~ I've been going back and forth with myself about whether or not I should even write this~ If I shouldn't have, just text me and tell me to go to hell~ :)~

I judged you~ A long time ago, there was drama on the blog(s) and I just got tired of it. I deleted people from myspace because of the friends they had and you were one of them. You sent me an email and the LONG emails went back and forth for a while. I explained my position while you explained yours. Not once did you let my opinions sway you into changing your opinions of your friends. I didn't agree with you at the time, but I've always admired your convictions. Although you seemed like a nice person on the blog, I was still a little nervous about meeting you in Chicago. I should have paid more attention to the person in those emails. That is exactly who I met! You are so sweet, kind, funny, and someone I'm so glad I know~ (this is where you kick me in the butt!) :)~

    ReplyDelete
  33. Tina: It's okay..I understand and I appreciate your honesty. I am glad that we are now good. I REALLY am, otherwise I couldn't take much more of your arm slappin, butt kickin' action..I am kinda fragile..haha And, btw, I like you too! :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Tina: Also, you were right and I was wrong about that long time ago drama..LOL...so, there ya go! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Tina: YAY on the good news for your dad!!! :) :) :)

Obviously reading from the bottom up. I thought it was funny to learn even how we read these comments..lol.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes Bear, you made me laugh too..you are so funny!

    ReplyDelete
  37. well thanks a lot for taking FOREVER to read my post! I've been sitting her sweating bullets!!! The lady at the desk has been looking at me funny......and there are people walking in with no hair, or on gurneys.....and I'M the one they are looking at!!!!~

I thought it was funny that we all read these comments differently~ I totally can't read from the bottom up...I get too confused~

I just talked to my sister...that girl is more relieved than I am~ She was so happy~ I'm glad it was good news cuz she's in between classes~

Oh....and DeeDee says that her friend is looking for crocs! That is just so wrong~

  40. Tina: Sorry, I had lunch and walked the treadmill and just got back to see comments. I am SO glad for you about your dad. That is such good news.

Also, tell DeeDee Hello and I hope that is having a great time..lol...! Is she at the Galleria?

Jodi: Thanks again for the wake up call..I would have missed my workout this morning..lol!! And keep on walkin' babeee.....

Don't forget all 5 fruits and veggies every day...makes the thirty somethings look your way..hehe

    ReplyDelete
  41. Not really sure if that whole "having the thirty somethings look your way" is a good thing or a bad thing..haha. ..I mean, really, who wants to be called a ...well, I hate even saying it!! but you know what they call them.

  42. Hi everyone,

I am at work and having a busy day. I just read yesterday and today's blogs.

Goldie I'm sorry about the news yesterday, that sux and I feel bad for your hubby.

    Shirley, also sorry for your loss. I send you big {{{ hugs }}}

Bear thank you for missing me and I would love to have a BABB, unless you or SacBarb/Mary would like to have it. Or JL??

Zona when will you be coming this way, we can plan it around your trip!

Bebbi, your blog was good and I know I have judged people before, then come to find out I am wrong.

Because of my profession I try really hard not to judge. I try to have empathy and realize everyone has a story. Sometimes it's a drug seeker, sometimes a hypochondriac, sometimes a "what the hell is that".

I've enjoyed reading the Chicago stories and seeing the pics!

Happy Birthday JL, wha are you doing for your special day?

    ReplyDelete
  43. P.S. Carol I saw on Face Book that you like Bath and Body Works... so do I!

I buy all kitchen and bathroom handsoap from them, they have the best scents!

I just bought some hand sanitizer gel, Sweet Pea scent! Haven't tried it yet...

    ReplyDelete
  44. EBJ: Yes, the "what the hell was that"..made me laugh. Now that you have seen we are all not axe murderers..maybe you will come to the next one! :) Well, I did bring an axe but it was all in good fun. And, got my bag checked by the TSA for it too..LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  45. EBJ: I am a bath and body works lover too. I love Sweat Pea scent..! Using a cherry scent that my son's girlfriend got me right now for handcream. I love their cookie scents at christmas except they make me hungry..haha.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Bebbi ~ I love your post today. I am one who is always too quick to judge a book by its cover. I really need to stop doing that.

Happy Birthday Just Lin! I hope your day is fantastic!!

(((HUGS))) to Mr. Goldie and Shirley.

Tina ~ great news about your dad!

Just stopping by to say hello!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Annie! (with the beautiful family!)...thanks for the comment on the blog and I am glad you liked it. We love our new fledling little owl popping by.. :) hehe.

Hope your day is going well.

  48. East Bay J ~ I am too a fan of Bath & Body Works. I'm kind of a germ-phobe so I am constantly washing the kids down with the anti-bacterial gel. I LOVE the Lemon scented stuff. It smells so clean.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Bebbi, I am currently using Tuberose scent in the bathrooms (WONDERFUL). I had Honeysuckle before that.

Mr. EBJ has never complained that they are too "girly" :)

In my kitchen I always use Moonlight Path, I've used that for years.

I've met quite a few of the owls and old R-bloggers and their families over the past few years, Bear and Jim, MEK, Seaside Lady, SacBarb and Sharon, Mary and Raquel, Caryn and Paul, Dona Jean and Laurie, Lynn D, and a few others who aren't around here (lol)

Bear had the first BABB at his house in Mountain View. I had the second and Barb had the last one.

I was def. nervous going to Bears house 3 years ago, but now know there are no axe murderers in the group.

    Must get back to work!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Bebbi ~ you are now my best friend (forever) for calling me "little". ;)

    ReplyDelete
  51. EBJ: Jeez...! You are an old hat at this meeting stuff. How awesome. :)

  52. BEBBI - Kudos for you for seeing past her appearance and lending a hand. You & Flirty Thirty were truly her angels that day!! I try to keep the same thing in mind everyday in my job. Even if it is just a smile, hello, and a thank you. Believe me some people are crabby as hell, and it takes all I can do to not rip their heads off. But I sometimes think that maybe the smile and service that I give them will be the trigger to turn their day around.

TINA - That is great news about your Dad!!

Waving a wing @ everyone else. It has been a long day, and about to get longer. Jake has not one, but two practices tonight. I hope I get a chance to fly back in later.

  64. EBJ or Whabby: I wanted to ask..what does BABB stand for?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Annie: I looked back and it looks like I was in Rossland in 2007. I have myspace messages from back as far as October 2007 in which I started to add people. I add JACNY first as one of my friends...and Mary/Mi not too long after. Were you around in mid 2007? And did you go to the chat area?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Jodi: You said that about us being angels and, you know, I really felt like there was a higher power involved in the whole experience. It seems almost surreal to me. You know when you just KNOW that something important has happened? Well, I felt that so strongly that I had to go home and write that blog right away. I think about "Bloody Mary Girl"..I hope she gets help and I hope she wasn't hurt too terribly bad. AND, I hope she has the good sense to stay away from that man.

Also, I think about Flirty Thirty too. He sure seemed like a nice young man. He said he was single, never been married and an electrician. When we first started talking I was wishing that my daughter was with me and didn't have a boyfriend and I could figure out a way to introduce them..lol. He just kept flirting with me..and I even told him that he made me feel very good. But, I was trying my darndest to remember that he is about 5 years older than my SON..lol. It didn't work though because he was just so darn cute. Mary - you know how you felt about your Italian waiter? Wel, that was what Cute Flirty Thirty something was like for me.

I wish them both the best and have thought of them all week. :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. I am supposed to be cleaning..HA!

    ReplyDelete
  68. EBJ: I just checked and I have Wild Honeysuckle hand wash in my bathroom. I couldn't remember which Bath & Body it was. Do they still carry that? It has lasted me a long time but is about out. I need to go and buy some more. For some reason I get a lot of it around Christmas for gifts or for myself.

  69. Afternoon Owls.

Lonnnng Day again. Shirley I am so sorry about your friend (((hugs))) to you.

Tina I am so happy to hear that the chemo is working and your Dad is doing so well on it! Yay!!!!!! Sending (((Hugs)))

J/L I hope you are having a hell of a Birthday today and not just sleeping it away. lol

Annie so great to see you posting in the nest!

Going to check my farms. Tomorrow I write my blog. I am STAYING HOME come hell or high water! I have it half written in my head. Can any of you read my mind? :)

  76. Bebbi ~ I left the blog around... April or May 2007... it could have been as late as June. Piper was born in February and I became super busy nursing a new baby and potty training a 2 year old. Thhhhhheeeeennnnnnn that crazy chick from the blog would never stop talking about her kids bathroom problems and what she was making for dinner so I left the blog. I chatted off and on for a long long time... until the chat room went away. I chatted as Annie_No_Pants because I was pregnant with Piper and always wore dresses, not pants. :)

I just went to my MySpace page and guess what... you and I are friends on MySpace!

If anyone wants to add me as a friend on Facebook, my name is Ann Benthusen Cline. No pressure. :)

  90. Ok I can't take it anymore. Everyone is posting the same status and well ok I am being a smart ass. Here is my version.

Before you were conceived I was scared shitless I would get pregnant, before you were born I had a bikini body, when you were born, OK I saw your face and knew I loved you, but thought "oh hell you are going to be big trouble." I would still die for you and yeah yeah I love you.

There now I feel better. Feels more real to me. Did not want to post in my status and piss anyone off. :)

    ReplyDelete
  105. Taterheqd1Hi, Hooters! I'm sorry it took so long for me to get here today. I had a pretty busy, if depressing day. I always get really down on my birthday and that was true today, too. Thank you all for your birthday wishes here and on FB.

Special thanks to Jodi and Dianne for their wonderful renditions of Happy Birthday. That was sweet of both of you.

Bebbi Great blog today. That was such a kind thing you did to help that young woman. It's easy to jump to the wrong conclusion when you only have limited information. I guess that's a lesson to us all. That we shouldn't jump to conclusions because we could be way off base.

Shirley I'm so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing that funny story about your friend.

Tina Yay for Dad! I'm so happy for you and your family. What great news!

Dianne I didn't notice that Tina has particularly small feet....or were you just comparing them to yours?

I have no idea what I'm doing on FB and FV so be patient....plus I'm OLD!

  106. Annie I'm so glad to see you here.

EBJ I'm so glad to see you back.

J/L: I get depressed on holidays and my birthday..I have to go through at least one emotional meltdown..well, I used to, I work really hard on controlling it nowadays. I hope that you were able to work through it today and have a little fun.
