The Afterlife by Paul Simon

by Just Lin

I really enjoy this song and get a kick out of the lyrics. For those of you who can't play music videos, these are the lyrics:

After I died, and the make up had dried, I went back to my place.
No moon that night, but a heavenly light shone on my face.
Still I thought it was odd, there was no sign of God just to usher me in.
Then a voice from above, sugar coated with Love, said, "Let us begin".

You got to fill out a form first, and then you wait in the line.
You got to fill out a form first, and then you wait in the line.

OK, a new kid in school, got to follow the rule, you got to learn the routine.
Woah, there's a girl over there, with the sunshiny hair, like a homecomin' queen.
I said, "Hey, what you say? It's a glorious day, by the way how long you been dead?"
Maybe you, maybe me, maybe baby makes three, but she just shook her head...

You got to fill out a form first, and then you wait in the line.
You got to fill out a form first, and then you wait in the line.

Buddha and Moses and all the noses from narrow to flat,
Had to stand in the line, just to glimpse the divine, what you think about that?
Well it seems like our fate to suffer and wait for the knowledge we seek.
It's all his design, no one cuts in the line, no one here likes a sneak

You got to fill out a form first, and then you wait in the line.
You got to fill out a form first, and then you wait in the line.

After you climb, up the ladder of time, the Lord God is here.
Face to face, in the vastness of space, your words disappear.
And you feel like swimming in an ocean of love, and the current is strong.
But all that remains when you try to explain is a fragment of song...
Lord is it, Be Bop A Lu La or Ooh Poppa Do
Lord, Be Bop A Lu La or Ooh Poppa Do
Be Bop A Lu La

  7. Good Morning from the forests of the Pacific North West. What a glorious morning! It is the first time I can sit out on the deck with my computer. It's like the middle of summer. We changed seasons in one day. I haven't listened to the video yet as I am enthralled by the songs of the birds. I will in a few minutes however.

  9. Tina - I love going through boxes of high school memories. Every few years I go through my memory box. I saved so much stuff. We use to "doodle" on the dividers in our binders, writing names of who was going steady and with whom. There are some girls' names with about ten boys' names under them, each one scratched out except the last one. Those were fun days.
In grade 12 we all wrote letters to ourselves with predictions of what our lives would be like when we were 40. They weren't to be opened until our 40th birthday. That seemed so far
away. Yes Jodi that topic could be a blog.

  10. Shirley - Wasn't that game good last night? We won in eleven seconds into Overtime. Anyone late getting back to their seats during intermission would have missed it. We have now won the first two games and the next game will be in Boston. There were 50,000 people on Main Street in Vancouver watching the game on huge screens. I think we just might win the Stanley Cup for the first time ever.

  11. Jodi - Isn't it hard getting to the thank you notes? It's also hard reading all the cards again.
    Sending you hugs this morning.

Breakfast is calling me so I will be back later to hear the song. It sounds interesting.

  12. Just_Lin - I just listened to the song and enjoyed it very much. I have never heard it before. Thanks for Sunday morning reminder that there is indeed a Heaven waiting for us. My church today is being in the middle of a cathedral of trees. I think it's about as close to Heaven as you can get.

  14. Good morning Ladies and germs...

Ditto Jodi! The world was a safer place by the time we got off the phone...except for 2 people that I can think of right off hand!! lol

    Love Paul Simon...good one J/L!

Speaking of heaven... I had a friend actually die on the operating table once and while she was dead she...

    1. Saw the bright light
    2. Floated up and saw her carcass on the table.
    3. Was greeted by people who thought she was someone they knew...turns out NOT....that broke up pretty fast...
    4. Her form was already filled out because she bought the "EXPRESS" package deal thru her funeral home so she went straight to hair...make-up and wardrobe...and thats when she woke up....when she saw that all the costumes were white!! See...shes a "Autumn"...

But the doctors brought her back! Having gone that long without oxygen to the brain she had some...well ok...lots of brain damage....but all you really noticed now is some pretty awesome eye and face twitches and one of her legs tap dances constantly....and she does that NBC "Boom bomb bing" little 3 note trademark sound from the Carson days....

what crap! He is in bed with two corpses singing about what a bad mutha-fuckin nigga he is....

It is revolting...2 dead white girls....

I don't get it...don't want to....I hope his tongue gets VD and rots off so he will be silent!

  16. Tina Lovely to see you moaning today. Btw, since this vid does NOT show the lyrics like the first vid I sent that couldn't be embedded, I did rewrite the first sentence or two but I guess you missed that. Thanks for posting it, though. : )

  21. Tinka Your post reminded me of when my art teacher rolled out a large portable chalk board and started listing, in chronological order, all the boys I had gone steady with. He called it "Lady Petion's Lovers". Some names appeared more than once. LOL It was embarrassing but funny, too. The man loved gossip and the social scene.

  22. Tina I just re-sent it to your work email addy. You will see that I had changed the text since the lyrics were not in this second choice of vid.

  23. Bear That reminds me of some letters I have from my husband that I wouldn't want anyone to see. Got a match?

  27. Whabbear - Yes I believe and
Go Canucks. They are going to do it in less than 7 games.

  28. Michael - What kind of video were you watching? It sounds awful.
There are lots of books outlining "out of body" experiences when everyone thinks the person is dead. I must read one some day.

  29. Just_Lin - I don't think I would like to have a teacher do that. It would be embarrassing. Of course the nuns did not think we had boy friends. We were all so innocent in their eyes. I guess we were when you hear what teenagers are doing today.

  30. Tina - Are you sure you didn't smack her?

  31. My grandson Thomas who I cradled what seems like such a short time ago, turned 16 two days ago. We are heading home to celebrate his birthday and my daughter and son-in-law's 20th Wedding Anniversary. Back to civilization.
    See you all tomorrow.

  33. My mother is 83, has emphysema, and now has lung cancer which has spread to her adrenal glands and liver. Yet, according to our phone conversation last night, she seems to believe that she still has options. That she will do whatever treatment is needed, although she is worried about losing her hair. The way things sounded to my brother when he attended her doctor appt with her is that the only thing being recommended at this point is palliative care. This makes sense to me, although it isn't what I wanted to hear. I do not want to burst her bubble, certainly not by phone, but I did have a good cry after we hung up. I really don't think she gets what her situation is. Perhaps this is part of the denial phase. Her first appt with the palliative care doctor is on the 14th and I will be there for that as will my brother. Maybe things will be clarified then.

  34. Oh, J/L your post just made me want to cry with you. You and your brother are such wonderful blessings for your mother.
