National Great Outdoors Month

by Iteach

Did you know that June is National Great Outdoors Month?  It sure is and I celebrated it with my family.  We went to White Pines Park last week in Mount Morris Illinois.  We stayed in a real long cabin that was made during the depression and it was just beautiful.  Surrounding the cabin was acres and acres of deep green forests with fun trails for us to walk.  The best part of the Great Outdoors was the indoor plumbing and the air conditioning inside the log cabins.  Seriously, I just don't think I'm the "roughin" type of girl who likes to sleep in tents and squats by a tree to relieve myself?  How about you?  What type of Great Outdoors person are you?

  1. Lynn! So beautiful! Good morning!!

Iteach: I don't mind roughing it but I do like to have a comfortable place to sleep. I value my rest and sometimes it's hard to get on the hard surfaces. Although, they have great air mattresses and they are not too bad. Air Conditioning, yes, I do like that. :)

    The place looks awesome..so fun!

  4. Good Morning Bebbi - Even seeing your name makes me smile.

  5. Iteach - I love being surrounded by nature but I love my comforts. Being in a 5th wheel with all the comforts of home is my idea of roughing it. When our kids were little we spent one night in a tent and Jack went out the very next day and bought a new van fully equipped for living 'my way' in the woods. We had a lot of fun in the that van and saw most of the Island.

  8. Good Morning!

ITEACH: I love forests and streams..I love to go on picnics..I would hike if my knee would let me..but I don't like camping. I went to Girl Scout camp when I was about 12..the fact that I haven't done any camping since tells you how much I liked it. I guess I'm not much for roughing it either..I think it has something to do with my Lithuanian ancestry..HA! ;D

LYNN: You're looking lovely in First today!

BEBBI: Hi Sunshine! A/C..gotta love it! :D I'll keep watching and I'm sure I'll catch Francis next time!

TINKA: I'll be praying for your niece today.♥

BARB: Thanks for QOTD..I just noticed..that's a pretty good response time for me! ;D

Better go level up again while I have all that energy.. ;D

Have a good day everyone..stay cool!

  9. I loved going to camp as a child. Good old Camp Runamuck... then on to Camp Ramsbottom.

But as an adult I began to avoid the many camping trips that friends invited me on and still avoid the trips today.

Air mattresses and sleeping bags...waking up covered with dew and the bugs you smeared all over you when they bit or made you itch on their journey across your face and in and out of your mouth.

Getting up to a hearty breakfast cooked on an open fire of improperly refrigerated food guaranteeing a trot down Grizzly Bear trail...

A couple of years ago I visited some friends at their campsite where they tried to talk me into making a night of it....they had an air mattress and "bag" for me...

I said... "you people have known me for 25 years and you honestly expect me to sleep here?? ....on a balloon?

...which brings me to the "Song O the Day"

    "You Don't Know Me"

You give your hand to me
    Then you say hello
    I can hardly speak
    My heart is beating so
    And anyone can tell
You think you know me well
    But you don't know me

No, you don't know the one
Who dreams of you at night
And longs to kiss your lips
And longs to hold you tight
    Oh I'm just a friend
    That's all I've ever been
    'Cause you don't know me

    I never knew
    The art of making love
    Though my heart aches
    With love for you
    Afraid and shy
I've let my chance to go by
    The chance that you might
    Love me, too

You give your hand to me
    And then you say good-bye
    I watch you walk away
    Beside the lucky guy
    You'll never never know
The one who loves you so
    Well, you don't know me

You give your hand to me, baby
    Then you say good-bye
    I watch you walk away
    Beside the lucky guy
No, no, you'll never ever know
The one who loves you so
    Well, you don't know me

  10. I have not been camping in years but I have to say I am all for my little luxuries like running water. :)

PS Michelle Bachmann strikes again. Hell I may be able to toss my antidepressants if she keeps on campaigning! LOL

  11. Here is what Lynn D is referring to...it is quite funny....

During an appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday, Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann was given an opportunity to set the record straight with regard to comments she made earlier this year lauding the nation's Founding Fathers for working "tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States.”

ABC's George Stephanopoulos asked the conservative congresswoman to address the statement, noting that many of the country's Founding Fathers, including Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, in fact had slaves and that slavery wasn't abolished until the Civil War. Here's an excerpt of the exchange that went down:

Bachmann: Well you know what’s marvelous is that in this country and under our constitution, we have the ability when we recognize that something is wrong to change it. And that’s what we did in our country. We changed it. We no longer have slavery. That’s a good thing. And what our Constitution has done for our nation is to give us the basis of freedom unparalleled in the rest of the world.
    Stephanopoulos: I agree with that…
Bachmann: That’s what people want...they realize our government is taking away our freedom.
Stephanopoulos: But that’s not what you said. You said that the Founding Fathers worked tirelessly to end slavery.
Bachmann: Well if you look at one of our Founding Fathers, John Quincy Adams, that’s absolutely true. He was a very young boy when he was with his father serving essentially as his father’s secretary. He tirelessly worked throughout his life to make sure that we did in fact one day eradicate slavery...
Stephanopoulos: He wasn’t one of the Founding Fathers – he was a president, he was a Secretary of State, he was a member of Congress, you’re right he did work to end slavery decades later. But so you are standing by this comment that the Founding Fathers worked tirelessly to end slavery?

Asked if she stood by her assertion that the Founding Fathers worked hard to end slavery given the facts, Bachmann said, "Well, John Quincy Adams most certainly was a part of the Revolutionary War era. He was a young boy but he was actively involved."

The remarks from the GOP hopeful come one day after she formally announced her candidacy for president of the United States in the key primary state of Iowa.

Earlier this year, Bachmann told a group of local New Hampshire Republicans, "You're the state where the shot was heard around the world in Lexington and Concord." However, the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired in Massachusetts, not the Granite State.

She told CNN on Tuesday morning, "I'm introducing myself now to the American people so that they can know that I have a strong academic scholarly background, more important I have a real life background."

In an appearance on Fox News' "Hannity" on Monday night, Bachmann suggested that President Barack Obama "is threatened by [her] candidacy." She said, "He fears me. He sees me as a serious, substantive competitor. I think he sees that I have a very clear path to victory for the nomination. And, I think he wants to do whatever he can to diminish me because he thinks he'll have to see me in the debates. That's my intent, to take him on in the debates and to win and take the voice of the people that I serve to the White House."

  12. She and Sarah Palin apparently are in a race to see who can be perceived as the most stupid...

    Its a close race...

    ReplyDelete
  13. LOL Mimi! What that article failed to mention was that John was seven years old at the time.

Oh and if you want to be very afraid check out the Dominionist Movement and The Seven Mountains Mandate.

5 of the Republican candidates talk this talk and subscribe to this plan. Bye Bye separation of church and state. Hell kiss your religion goodbye. They maintain they must convert us all to their beliefs period.

    ReplyDelete
  14. oh yes Sarah and Michelle both believe in this.

  15. LynnD Well, aren't you pretty this morning. How are you liking that group thing, anyway. I know you were a little apprehensive when you were going to the first one.

  16. Bebbi I like a comfortable place to sleep, too. Like a hotel room, for instance.

  17. Tinka Sending prayers and positive thoughts to your niece.

  18. Zona I went on a Girl Scout camping trip once. My girlfriend and I pitched our tent, which was a major undertaking for us, then in the middle of the night it started slipping away and collapsed on us. We were just on a little bit of an incline. LOL

  19. Michael Yep. The meat in the ice chest is looking very suspicious to me by day two.

  20. iteach A log cabin with indoor plumbing and air conditioning. Now, that I could handle. What a fun place to take the kids. Thanks for the blog today.

  21. Iteach, I was a Brownie and Girl Scout from 3rd grade through 8th grade. We had three very active leaders, we did a lot of camping and I loved it. Then after I got married, my Hubby suggested a camping trip. We were in some remote place with no bathroom for miles, not even an outhouse. I decided that camping wasn't that much fun after all. I told my Hubby that my idea of roughing it was a motel with no TV. Thank goodness all my boys were in so much sports that we never had time to camp when they were young. I do like being outdoors, but I want to go in when it's time to pee or sleep.

  23. I'm just going to sit back and watch how the election unfolds. We all might be surprised what happens. Also I'm sittin back, because I'm finally in my happy place, so I'm going to enjoy it for awhile. It has been a while since I felt this content.

  24. Lynn, I am basking in your beauty today. I am also enjoying the comments you are posting on FB about Michelle Bachman, especially the one about John Wayne Gacey. What a maroon! (spelling intentional) LOL

  27. Have you thought about getting another tatoo?

I admit sometimes I think about what I would get, but I don't think I could do it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Off to take a little nap with son number 2, his new medicine makes him sleepy.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Iteach, if that tattoo comment was for me, no I haven't thought about getting another one. I really just wanted to get my eyes done in case I ever have to go to the hospital and can't put make up on. At least I'll have eye liner. Isn't that vain? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  30. No that is not vain. I wish I had a way of keeping powder pressd on my face that is the one make up item I can't live without.

  31. I explained to my 16 yr old daughter what Bachmann said and she gave me this puzzled look and said, "Mom! That doesn't even make sense!" lmbo!~

iteach~ thanks for sending in the blog~ I LOVE camping....sometimes I like outhouses better than some of the campground bathrooms~ I DO NOT like going against a rock! That's hard and takes practice!~ I was a girl scout and we went camping with my family as well. We take our kids camping now.....we all love it~ :D

    Hi to everyone~

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm glad you like being outside with you kids and camping and stuff but it ain't for me. I have too many issues...bugs, animals, birds, meeting people, CPAP machine, sun...I think you get the idea. It's all nice to look at from the inside, I just don't want to be out there.

We did go as a family in a camper trailer when I was a kid, but my mother always complained about cooking outside (which I actually like as long as someone else does the cooking)and the bugs.

Just not my thing. I do like hearing camping stories though.

  34. Good Evening Night Owls.....wonder how many of you are really still up? Maybe we should be called "the middle of the day" owls!

ITEACH: What a great place to go camping in the air conditioned cabin. It sounds like a lot of fun doing it that way. I'm with you on the outside stuff.

Very hot day today (96) not like you ZONA but too hot for me . Glad to have that air in the house.

Well, I will say goodnight and just wanted to drop by and say hello.

TINK: How did your niece do today? Thinking of you.

J/L: Time for an Iphone. I really do like it. Are you going to your moms his week?

  37. I just got word that my niece is out of recovery and settled into a private room (we are happy about that). She was 3 hours in the operating room and 3 hours in recovery. She will have an epidural for two days so she won't feel the pain until then. Her sister is still with her but I think they will be asking her to leave soon. It looks good. They think they got it all so we are very hopeful and thankful. She will stay in hospital 5 to 7 days so I hope I can see her after the holiday weekend.
Thanks for the kind words and prayers. They are so much appreciated. Love, Tinka

  38. Tinka That's wonderful news. :)

  39. Dianne I'll be going back down to SoCal on the 4th and plan to stay 10 days. My brother has a chance to work that week and really can't afford not to. With my mother's health issues plus her back went out and was making her more unsteady on her feet, we didn't feel good about her being alone while he was working. During my last visit, she fell twice, although she blames that totally on the back problem which has gotten better.

  40. Enjoyed all the comments hugely today! I used to camp back in school, and thoroughly enjoyed it. You sure do get dirty, though... especially under your fingernails!

I only went to camp once, and it wasn't a pleasant experience... very homesick for my Mom! One positive thing about the experience, though, was the opportunities it afforded me to look at grown men naked as they skinny-dipped every morning in the lake with the boys.

On a related note, I never made it to Camp Ramsbottom in my teen years. Something I kind of regret today!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Um, that wasn't a very coherent post. By "camping in school", I meant camping with college friends. By "going to camp" I meant going to an organized summer camp for kids.
