A Better Place

by Just Lin

Glen Campbell has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.  This song is from his recently released c/d, "Ghost on the Canvas".  It will no doubt be the last time that Mr. Campbell is in a recording studio.

This song breaks my heart when I hear it.  It was absolutely horrible to watch my mother die from cancer but at least it was relatively quick.  I don't think I could have beared to watch her slip away slowly through Alzheimer's.  What a horrible disease it is.

  3. My Dad suffered from dementia which has similarities to Alzheimer. I never knew when I went to see him "where" he would be. Sometimes he was back home with his parents, or trout fishing with a friend and sometimes he was back in the war. The most difficult was when he didn't recognize me, and I had to play along to who he thought I was. The last couple years of his life he couldn't be trusted to be alone. He almost burned down a hunting camp once. That's why we ended up taking him to a home. Very difficult. I can only imagine what families of Alzheimer patients goes through.

  5. Good Morning Tina and Shirley.

Just_Lin - That has made me so sad to think of Glen Campbell having that horrible disease. I was such a fan of his when he came out with his song "Gentle On My Mind" in 1969. Then he replaced "The Smothers Brother" show that summer. It was so popular he got his own "Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour" that fall. I just loved him and all his songs. He is one year and one day older than I but his face shows the hard living days he had with alcohol and drugs. He was actually beautiful when he was 30. What a waste.

  6. Shirley - I sympathize with your experience with your dad. It must have been so hard. My mother had vascular dementia but she never got to the point where she didn't know me. The sad thing was her lack of memory. I would spend hours with her every day but in the evening when I called her she would not remember I was there. She would know friends when they called or visited her but she would say she hadn't seen me for a long time. That would make me cry. She also would ask me "How is Joan?" If I told her Joan had died it was as if I had told her for the first time and she would get that initial shock all over again. We decided it was best to just tell her "Joan was fine". Dementia is a cruel disease. I think that is why it is called "The Long Goodbye".

  7. Our Thanksgiving is next weekend but as I mentioned before it starts today for us because we are having Thanksgiving Dinner at my daughter and son-in-law's house. It's the first time I didn't make buns Dianne but I will do that for next weekend.

    Have a great Sunday everyone.

  8. Good Morning Barb - You were posting while I was writing and I almost missed you. You didn't shut down the blog yesterday. You added one more comment to a very slow day. I think everyone must have been very busy. Today seems to be the same kind of day. It's after lunch on the East Coast and a lot of owls have not yet made it into the nest. I hope it's not hangovers Little Owls!. Tinka doesn't like that. See you all later.

  9. Hi, HOoters! Glad you like the song. The lines, "the past gets in my way" and "I depend on my loved ones, more and more each day" really touch me. It would be horrible to get that diagnosis and know what lies ahead. And such a heartbreak for the families.

  10. Shirley I can only imagine how difficult that was for you and the rest of your family. (((HUGS)))

  11. Tinka (((HUGS))) to you, too, my friend. I am blessed that my mother, although she would be a little confused once in a while, always knew who I was and knew that we were there for her.

  15. J/L, I've been very busy here in sack-a-tomatoes. (I wonder how Kent is?) I had to go to South Sac to pick up an order from the woman who conducts the card workshops I attend, then get the oil changed on my car because I'm going to Santa Maria on Friday, and finally stopped at Home Depot to pick up one of those dusk-to-dawn lights for the front of my house. The one that is up there now has quit working and my son is going to replace it for me. My neighborhood is very dark because we have no street lights so most of the neighbors have big lights to compensate. Now I am home and I may have to take a nap. Was that more than you wanted to know?

    What are you doing today?

  17. SLIN - Glen Campbell was my first "crush" at the tender age of 4!! My Aunt Jane took me to see him in Madison. It was my first concert :) Love the song. One of my classmate's Dad passed this past week from Alzheimer's so this song really "spoke" to me. Thank you for sharing it ♥

    Hey MOANIN' MYRTLE!!

SHIRLEY - My maid of honor's Mother has been in an assisted living facility for the last 4 years due to Alzheimer's. So sad seeing the decline :(

    BARB - I see you!!

TINKA - I'll be in Hawaii, so an early Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!!

DIANNE - Sorry my Packers gave our Broncos such a spanking today. The colors are really coming alive here, too!!

  18. SacBarb It was moderately busy for me today, too. The grandkids have been here for the weekend and I took my granddaughter shoe shopping for new tennis shoes to wear here. I also went to work for a while yesterday and today. The grandkids are staying over until tomorrow as their other grandmother is in the hospital and they have not come up with a diagnosis for her yet. She is on her 3rd blood transfusion as she doesn't seem to be making enough red blood cells. It sounds like some kind of cancer to me. Whatever it is, it isn't good.

  20. Dianne It sounds like you had a nice weekend. It must be tough for Glen Campbrell to be doing these engagements and knowing they will be the final ones.

  22. Great blog. I love Glen Campbell. I went to see him at Ball State when I was young. He's very good and amazing...Rhinestone Cowboy. I remember when he wore all the stuff and sang that song.

I am sorry he has alzheimer's too. I will come back tonight and listen to the video. I bet it's really good.

I had a wedding over the weekend and was out of town. Had fun. My last getaway for this year. :) It was good seeing family I hadn't seen in a long time, especially for a happy occasion. My cousin and I were talking and I told her that is why I really wanted to come because we have too many funerals we end up seeing everyone. A wedding is a much better chance to see everybody you love! :)

    It was beautiful too.

J/L: Sounds like you are very busy. I didn't know you were working...
