My Favorite Animal

by Dianne

Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, "Fried chicken."

She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else laughed.

My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal.

I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much.

I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's office.

I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again.

The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was.

I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken.

She sent me back to the principal's office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again.

I don't understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn't like it when I am.

Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most.

I told her, "Colonel Sanders." Guess where I am now...

  1. Morning Glories!

I like fried chicken too. Poor kid can't win for losing.

I read area 51 and I have gotten to the point where I despise Christmas. There I said it. It has nothing to do about helping others anymore or seeing and spending quality time with family. It is just another shopping day and a reason for a sale so we can all just go buy crap that we think we need. imho.

It is no different than Veterans day Memorial day etc.....

I really wish we could all go back to dime store or homemade presents or even a white elephant party and cookie exchanges. Taking time to enjoy each others company. But hey I am living in a dream world. How will the Corporate "people" survive if we don't keep buying their crap and making sure they fleece my pockets for the benefit of their Corporate raiders.

  2. Good Morning!

DI: That was cute! I've had days like that..no matter what you say..it's just not the right thing..lol..

LYNN: I'm still liking Christmas. I love the chill in the air..the music..the colors of the season..the lights..and to me there's a certain kindness and caring that I see from people when I'm out and about that I don't see other times of the year.

My sister and I had cookie making weekend last year..and we're going to do it this year too. We pick out a bunch of cookie recipes and then spend the weekend making them. She takes some to work..we give some to the neighbors. We have a lot of fun..laughing at how they come out..and how much of a mess we make!

I understand your feelings LYNN..there is a lot of rush..rush..rush..sell..sell..sell..buy..buy..buy..and the pressure of that can really get to me at times. I wish there was more time so we could all slow down and just enjoy everything..ya know? It all goes by way too fast...

  3. BARB: Our house is our own again..lol..

Actually they only stayed the one night..and then went down to visit Randy's aunt. We were going to go..but Randy had some reservations about our car. He didn't know why..but wanted to stay in town. We went to the grocery store Saturday afternoon..and when we came out..the battery was dead. Long story short..the alternator was kaput. It's about a $700 fix at the shop..but Rand was able to buy a new one for $270 and fix it himself. It wasn't easy..but he did do it. Yay! Boo at the $270 cost tho.. :/

Long frustrating weekend..but in the end I always figure..as long as it's fixable..it's ok.. :)

  4. LynnD So tell us how you really feel. LOL

Well, you're looking pretty cute there in first. You can make your Christmas be what you want it to be. Maybe we should all remind ourselves of that.

  5. Dianne, That was funny, but I feel sorry for kids when they are honest, sometimes brutally honest, and then they get in trouble for it. Although they do have to be taught how to have a filter, they still should be commended for their honesty. BTW, with old age the filter goes. ;-)

Lynn, My sister is the epitome of buying crap just because she sees it on TV. She figures if the person selling it likes it than everyone else will and she usually gets the same thing for everyone. Then, my kids call me and ask why she thought they would like it. She used to ask me first and if I said I didn't think they would like it she would say, "well, I think they will and I'm getting it" so now I say "get whatever you want." It's sad really, because I hate to see her waste her money, plus contribute to the corporate greed.

Zona, You are so lucky that Randy can fix almost anything. My Hubby was like that and when he died I hated when I had to call someone and pay big bucks to have something fixed.

Today I am working for Christmas Promise so maybe the real Spirit of Christmas will finally kick in. Have a good day all.

  6. Dianne I like fried chicken, too. It's something I never make, though. My mother made really good fried chicken.

One of my favorite meals, ever, was one Mom and I made about 25 yrs ago. She was here visiting and one day we went across the Bay to Ardenwood Farms. It's a lovely place with tours of the Victorian house and people dressed up in Victorian garb demonstrating, blacksmithing, quilting and such as that. There are peacocks walking around, animals to feed. It was a lovely and relaxing day. As we left, we bought some fresh-picked green beans and tomatoes. That night, Mom made fried chicken and gravy and I made mashed potatoes and the green beans and we had sliced tomatoes. It was such a delicious meal and wonderful end to a great day. Such a good memory for me.

  7. Zona Well, "Boo" on the failed alternator but "Yay" that Randy was able to replace it himself. At least that saved a nice chunk of money.

It sounds like you and your sister have a blast baking cookies. That's a fun tradition to keep up.

  9. Good Morning Everyone. Happy Monday (it is Monday, right)?

I got a cute shirt online that says Bronco grandmother and its orange. Does anyone else want one? Barb, JL, Mary? I will treat you if you will proudly wear it. Barb, your kids would love to see you in it over the holidays. (Especially S D son).

Lynn, you are pretty and bright up there as first today. I usually like the holidays just not all the work. It's not quite as fun for me as the kids get older. None of them, except 7 yer old know what they want and it's boring to me to give money or gift cards but if you get something else it's just a waste. Oh well, I'll concentrate on my 7 Yr old grandson.

Barb, enjoy your day and come home singin Christmas carols!!

JL, what a great memory plus it makes me hungry. My kids will never have cooking memories of me. :(

Zona, good thing you didn't go out of town. You are lucky that randy cab fix things. Saves a ton of money. Will you be sending me cookies?

  10. Dianne, I applaud your generosity, but I respectfully have to decline. I look terrible in orange. I've been listening to Christmas carols since the first week in November. It hasn't helped so far.

J/L, I have many good memories of cooking with my Mom, especially when we made Italian Christmas cookies together.

  11. LYNN - Hey gorgeous!! This is the reason Eric & I quit exchanging gifts. We also don't exchange gifts with Paul's brother and sister. Paul's Mom's side of the family still draws names, but I withdrew my name about 10 years ago. I was tired of getting a name of some cousin that I really don't know, then getting the shaft in the end. (there was no set limit....you scored if Uncle Lowell got your name, but God forbid one of Aunt Norma's kids got yours....kwim)? UGH!!! At least Christmas with my Mom's side of the family we all bring a donation to the local food pantry. We did away with the gift exchange. We all agreed it was the seeing each other that counted!!

  12. ZONA - Glad you survived the weekend!! And you are sooooooo lucky to be married to that cute little handyman!! Wish I could fly in for your baking day with your sis!!

  14. BARB - I've been listening to Christmas music for the last couple of weeks!! I love it!

    p.s. What is Christmas Promise?

  15. SLIN - Thank you for sharing that memory of your Mom!! I think some of my fav memories of my Mom involve food. She cooked from the heart ♥

  16. Well I was cranky this morning. I did go out and help some of the local small businesses today. That was nice. I'm still not overwhelmed with xmas feelings. :)

  17. Jodi your xmas sounds the best. Doyle and I are kicking around going to the beach for a few days as our gift to each other. I usually just get something my Dad needs and the rest is gift cards. I already donated to North West Harvest for food for needy families.

I am thinking they may need to just hurry up and start selling pot here, maybe then I will be in a better mood. Which reminds me I need to get Heidi's brownie recipe.

  18. LYNN - A couple days at the beach sounds lovely!! Good to chat with you...and remember to start posting pics of all your projects!!

  19. Lynn, lol at needing the brownie recipe. Too bad I didn't draw your name this year for a present now that its legal here. Dang, maybe next year.

I've been listening to Christmas music for a few weeks. I love the music and lights.

Ok, finally got my 12 year old grandson's Xmas list. Here it is: 1)Ipod5 2) new cell phone. 3) headphones that cost $300. I told him he better talk to Santa. Guess he gets a gift card. Why don't they want cd's or something anymore. I shouldn't have asked. Shoot, I'd have to get a job for his presents. Oh he did add a Starbucks card. What 12 yr old wants a Starbucks card?? Crazy to me.

Barb, I'm along with Jodi....what is a Christmas Promise?

Jodi, you have the right idea for the holidays. What are you looking at for your kids?

Ok Barb, I'll take your orange shirt back or pass it on to JL or Mary. I really felt like you would be the most excited!!!

  20. Lynn, I think going to the beach sounds great. I kind of always wanted to go on a cruise for holidays. Heck, I want to go on a cruise for anything.

  21. Dianne & Jodi, Christmas Promise is an organization that collects Christmas gifts for families that otherwise would not have a Christmas. We get referrals from Teachers and Social Workers and serve between 250 and 300 families each year. The teachers have the children write a letter to Santa and the Social Workers write a summary about the needy families. We post them on a wall, then people come in, read the letters and chose one or more to adopt the family and buy gifts for them. After the gifts are processed through our system,(we have to keep careful track because we are a non-profit) they are wrapped and on Christmas Eve several 'Santas' deliver them to the families. The families don't know this will happen until they see Santa at their door.

We start on Dec.1 and by today we only had about 40 families left to adopt. Today we adopted out another 10 families. Some businesses have adopted several families for as long as we have been operating (27 years). Employees from Vision Service Plan have adopted 8-10 families for at least as long as I have been volunteering (10 years). It is very heart warming.

We also decorate and fill approx. 750 stockings to take to the Children's Home, Juvenile Hall and hospitals. We work on the stockings throughout the year.

Even in these hard economic times, it is amazing how generous people can be.

It also amazes me that most of the children will ask for something for their parents and siblings before they ask for themselves.

So that's what Christmas Promise is!

  22. Di 2, I'm really sorry, but orange is just not my color. I'm more of a black and silver girl.

Lynn, Spending time at the beach sounds good to me. Wish I could do that. Maybe I should go to San Diego.

  23. Barb, what a great organization! And it leads right into my point here, which is, Lynn D, I think Christmas is now exactly what you make of it. To me, as someone who has lived thousands of miles from my nuclear family for 25 years now, it's all about traveling back and being with them. All about sharing the old rituals - the Christmas dinners and decorated trees and gift giving and get-togethers with friends and extended family - that we've done since I was a child. And this year, these will all be particularly poignant, since, for the first time, we'll be doing all those things without my Dad. Bottom line: I have always enjoyed Christmas. This year, I'm going to be very grateful to it, as well, for providing me an opportunity to spend some quality time with my Mom and my sister and brother-in law, and help us all deal with the loss.

  24. Dianne Thank you for the kind offer but orange just isn't my color. It makes me look rather jaundiced. ;)

And Yikes about your grandson's wish list! I haven't got my grandson's list yet but there's usually some video game he wants and that's not so bad.

  25. SacBarb Bless you for doing that. What a great organization!

  26. Bear Yep, spending time with family; remembering Christmases past and making new memories.

  27. J/L, Thanks but volunteering at Christmas Promise does much more for me than I do for them. I really love working there and I love the other people that work there. Every single person is a volunteer, including the two women that started it on a shoestring 27 years ago.

  28. BARB - What a fantastic organization!! In past Christmas's all store leaders and asst store leaders are asked to pick a tag for a family in need. This year when Alex got the email I asked if I could get one, too. My co-worker Christina and I are doing one together for a 2 year old little girl. All that was asked for was picture books. How simple a request to make someone's holiday better!!

  29. WHABBY - After my Mom passed, it was very important to my Dad that we keep the traditions going. We always spent Christmas day at their house. Now that he is gone, sadly I didn't see my brother on Christmas day last year and probably won't this year either. But we both still attend the Jacobson Christmas (my Mom's side of the family). Blessings to you and your family on this first Christmas without your Dad ♥
