Lost Words from Our Childhood

by Dianne

Would you believe the email spell checker did not recognize the word “Murgatroyd”?
Lost Words from our childhood: Words gone as fast as the buggy whip!  Sad really!
The other day a not so elderly (65) lady said something to her son about driving a Jalopy and he looked at her quizzically and said, “What the heck is a Jalopy?”
He never heard of the word jalopy!!  She knew she was old but not that old.
Well, I hope you are Hunky Dory after you read this and chuckle.
About a month ago, I used some old expressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology. These phrases included “Don’t touch that dial,” “Carbon copy,” “You sound like a broken record” and “Hung out to dry.” Back in the olden days we had a lot of moxie.  We’d put on our best bib and tucker to straighten up and fly right.
Heavens to Betsy!
Gee whillikers!
Jumping Jehoshaphat!
Holy Moley!
We were in like Flynn and living the Life of Riley, and even a regular guy couldn’t accuse us of being a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill. Not for all the tea in China!
Back in the olden days, life used to be swell, but when’s the last time anything was swell?
Swell has gone the way of beehives, pageboys, and the DA.; of spats, knickers, fedoras, poodle skirts, saddle shoes and pedal pushers.
Oh, my aching back.  Kilroy was here, but he isn’t anymore.
We wake up from what surely has been just a short nap, and before we can say, well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle! Or, This is a fine kettle of fish! We discover that the words we grew up with, the words that seemed omnipresent, as oxygen, have vanished with scarcely a notice from our tongues and our pens and our keyboards..
Poof, go the words of our youth, the words we’ve left behind. We blink, and they’re gone.  Where have all those phrases gone?
Long gone: Pshaw, The milkman did it.
Hey!  It’s your nickel.
Don’t forget to pull the chain.
Knee high to a grasshopper.
Well, Fiddlesticks!
Going like sixty.
I’ll see you in the funny papers.
Don’t take any wooden nickels.
It turns out there are more of these lost words and expressions than Carter has liver pills.  This can be disturbing stuff!
We of a certain age have been blessed to live in changeable times.  For a child, each new word is like a shiny toy, a toy that has no age.  We at the other end of the chronological arc have the advantage of remembering there are words that once did not exist and there were words that once strutted their hour upon the earthly stage and now are heard no more, except in our collective memory.  It’s one of the greatest advantages of aging.
See ya later, alligator!

    Good Monday all!
Let me know how you are all doing, whether you think it is boring or not :)
Love you all. I will "skedaddle" now.....

  2. Dianne, Last week on Jeopardy one of the questions to the answer was "Jumping Jehoshaphat." None of the young contestants got it, but I was yelling it at the screen! LOL My husband used to use a lot of 'Okie' saying, most of which I didn't understand. One time he told me the milk was clabbered and I told him that wasn't a word. I'm so smart ya know! j/k! Well, he showed it to me in the dictionary. I had never heard that word and was sure it was a made-up Okie term.

I hope Louis' daughter recovers quickly. It's good her Mother can be there to help her.
Our air is clearing somewhat. It wasn't too bad when I went out.

  3. Mary, Given a choice, I would rather stay home with the fur babies, too. I'm not too crazy about long car trips. I took your advice and used a scarf to cover my face (mostly) the other day and then picked up some masks Kaiser had out for patients. The air is clearing a little and they are getting the fires under control somewhat. I can't imagine going through that kind of ordeal and losing everything. Such a helpless feeling. One of my husbands cousins had to evacuate and they were luck enough to find their house in good shape when they were allowed to go home yesterday.

  4. J/L, I like Ricky Gervais, too. I can't remember which award show he emceed, but I thought he did a good job. He certainly doesn't worry about being politically correct. I imagine he will have a lot to say about the current administration. I would like to take a trip to Seattle in the near future. Chad has asked me to visit him and we would like to go to BC while I'm there.

  5. So I had an appointment with my new Primary doctor last week. Not sure I like her yet, but I will give it some more time. She did call me and tell me that the lab results showed that my kidney function is getting a little worse (I have had kidney disease for about 10 years and it has been at stage 3 the whole time until now) and that I have a UTI, for which she ordered an antibiotic. I'm glad that was discovered before I go to San Diego next week. I leave on the 25th and come home on Halloween. Then today I had an appointment with my back surgeon because I've been having lower back pain again and I emailed him and he got me an appointment almost immediately. The new x-rays showed more degeneration so he set me up with an appointment for a MRI on Nov.1st. It possibility will result in more surgery. So that's what's going on in my world.

  6. Barb Well, you've certainly had a lot of medical news all at once, haven't you? I'm really sorry about your back issues as I'm sure you weren't wanting to hear that you may need another surgery. I have kidney disease, also, but I don't think I've ever had it described in terms of what stage it is. After looking up the stages, I see that I am in the middle of Stage 3 and I've been there a long time. I don't know about you, but I have a hard time taking it into consideration regarding my diet. I love salty stuff and I am not on a salt-free diet even though I know I should be. I know I should also be careful about how much protein I eat and also dairy products. Colas are also hard on the kidneys and although I don't have it often, if I have a soda, I want it to be a Coke or Pepsi. Bacon is a big no-no but I really love to have it once in a while when I go out to breakfast. The diet restrictions are a lot to keep in mind, especially when trying to be on a diet to lose weight. Pretty soon there won' be anything left to eat except fruits and vegetables which does not sound appealing to me. I wonder if your UTI could be contributing to your kidney test results.

I did go get my annual flu shot yesterday. I didn't feel the actual shot at all.....not even a little bit. I do have a bit of an achy arm now, though, but no big deal.

It's cold and overcast today. They are predicting some rain tomorrow for the Napa/Sonoma area so that will be a big relief and help for the firefighting efforts. I don't know if any of the rain will make it down here but I hope so.

  7. Mary My second husband was 17 years older than me and "dressed to the nines" is something he might have said on occasion.

I was reading about a young woman who escaped the California fires on her bicycle with her 70 lb dog in a duffel bag. OMG! I don't think I could adequately ride a bike anymore, let alone with my 70 lb dog on it, too. It's amazing what you can do when adrenaline kicks in.

  8. Dianne I forgot to thank you for the blog. I have heard all those sayings but have never used them myself. I think they are from a generation older than us. Some of the things I said as a teenager I left behind as I matured, thankfully. Words like "bitchin'". LOL

  9. Whew....just watched the Raider game and Barb for once I was for the Raiders. Wow, what an exciting ending and they won by a point. LOUIS watched the whole thing ..I only tuned in near the end. We play Chargers on Sunday..there...so could you cheer for us? I have a feeling I know the answer.

Barb, sorry you are having medical issues. Gosh, I hope you don’t need more back surgery. It seems like it’s always something, doesn’t it? I get tired of going to doctors, tests, and Co-pays !! Be sure and let us know how the MRI goes. I hope you have a fun trip to San Diego.

JL, I still say a few of those sayings. I didn’t know they were out of date..lol. Boy, that’s something about that lady on the bike. I guess her adrenaline really kicked in for her. What a scary situation. These fires are so awful.
I agree with you, vegetables get old after awhile. I had a five pound loss this week at ww but I’m up and down. It gets so old. I’m really trying so maybe I can breathe again. Ho hum! Lol.

Mary, hope you rooter took care of your problem today. What happened? I hate plumbing issues. We are having internet problems. They came out today and fixed it but tonight it isn’t working again. They are coming in the am once again. It’s a pain and then you realize how much you rely on it.

We went out for Kayla’s 19th bday Monday night to a great steak place. It was so good and her dad paid so it even tasted better. :).
Jake’s grandma texted Kayla wanting her to help with bail money for that ass. I don’t know why she doesn’t block her. He goes to court on the 26th so I hope he doesn’t bail out before then as he is a definite flight risk. I hope he goes to prison.

It’s been great weather here this week. I love the fall weather I had to get blood taken today and she found my vein the first shot. Yippee. I had to get it taken for my diabetic checkup next week.

Well, that’s about it for now. Hope all of you are doingq good.

  10. Dianne, congratz on the 5 lb. loss. I really wanted to lose some weight before I go to San Diego and instead I have gained. I don't know what's the matter with me that I can't stick to a healthy regimen. I have had cravings and even had a pizza delivered and I ate it in three days. I am supposed to be eating low salt foods and pepperoni pizza definitely does not fit that category!

Jake's grandmother sure is nervy to be asking Kayla for money! She really should block her!

I'm glad you didn't have to go through a big ordeal when they took your blood this time. I had a really good tech when I had my blood drawn, too. I always look away and this time I didn't feel even a slight prick. I told her I want her to always draw my blood.

  11. J/L, I read about that woman who biked out of the fire area with her 70 lb. dog. That was amazing!

I agree that the diet restrictions for kidney disease are hard to keep especially when there are other medical issues that have other restrictions that conflict with each other. After my heart surgery I was supposed to eat a diet with high protein for at least a year while my heart was healing. Of course, salt is a no-no for heart disease, too.

  12. Mary, I have an aunt that would say "dressed to the 9's" and I knew that meant all dressed up, but I always wondered how that phrase got started. I Googled it and apparently it is from an old Scottish saying.

  13. Hi, Hooters. This is just a quick update on what's happening in my world so it will be a short note. LOL

Yesterday, my dog started favoring her left hind foot. She could put weight on it but didn't want to. I couldn't find anything wedged between her foot pads or anything else. She miraculously was cured for as long as it took to chase a squirrel but then was back to holding her foot up off the ground. So today, she was still acting like it hurt her so I was able to get an appointment at the vet. After the doctor manipulated everything on her leg and foot, the only thing he could find was two small abrasions on the bottom of her foot. (She is a drama queen.) So I came home with doggy aspirin and foot soak. After paying $115, she acts like her foot feels a lot better. LOL

Speaking of vets......... The other night I was eating alone at a local restaurant when a woman approached me and asked me if I used to work at Pedro Point Veterinary Clinic. When I told her I had, she went on to thank me for the kindness and compassion I showed her and her family when they had to put their dog down. She wanted me to know how much she appreciated it and that it really helped make that day a little bit less horrible. I don't honestly remember that particular client as I had stopped working at that clinic 21 years ago. It was nice to know that I made a tiny difference in someones life experience, though. It just goes to show that there are times when you are changing someone's life experience even when you don't know it.

I made dinner in the crock pot yesterday which freed me up to work more on a painting I started in class last Saturday. I think I'm finished with it now. It's not a subject I would have chosen but we were working on pumpkin patch scenes so it is topical, anyway. I've come to the conclusion that I should get a table top easel. I paint on my dining room table but then I find I am too close and the angle is troublesome so I end up standing and bending slightly in order to paint. Today my back was very annoyed and threatening to really go out on me.

I also don't get my Jake-ass's grandmother would contact Kayla, especially about giving money to get that creep out of jail. Is she nuts, or what? Maybe she feels threatened by him so does his bidding. She needs to block that number and any other number associated with Jake.

  14. Sorry I have been MIA. As you have read on FB, our turlet backed up into the bath tub ick!! Of course it append the day before Jim went up North! Everyone we called couldn't come the next day! Jim was a wreck, not wanting to leave me with the mess, but knew he had to go! I told him to go and I would find someone. Matt & I were both on our phones all morning! No one locally could come. I finally got a hold of the "Roto-rooter" Co. and they sent someone right away! I knew it would be expensive, but I didn't care, Jim left me his check book LOL! I must have disinfected that bathroom 5 times! Pooped me out, plus washing down all the floors where he walked. I imagine all kinds of stuff on thoae boots lol! He was a sweet guy. He did a great job. I gave him a nice tip before he left.
Part of the problem is that the guy that built this house didn't put the drain pipe in at a good angle for the "flow, and didn't put in a "clean out" place in the basement for such emergency s. One more possible cause is the new "water saver toilet. Not enough water to push stuff through! Oye vey!

Matthew got his test results back from his MRI and CS. He was pretty upset when he found out that he would be having a 4 hr surgery. He needs rods in his back and a bone from his hip for neck area fusion. He has been in pain for so long. He hasn't slept in a bed in years. He sleeps in a Lazy Boy in his room. He will be talking with our family Dr this week for more info. Our sons & daughters will always be our baby s eh?

We are supposed to get a bunch of rain again in the next two days. Today was beautiful, so I spent most of it prepping th yard and patio for the coming winter. I put up all the plants and plant stands, hoses, garden tools, etc. I don't move the patio furniture off the deck until I absolutely have to lol! Jim will to take care of the garden spot and lawn equipment. He is a terrible procrastinator!
Looks like I wrote a novel and didn't even comment on your posts :(
I did read them! Love yah all! BBL

  15. Hi....Mary, so sorry your son will have to have surgery ..hopefully it will make him feel much better. It will be nice for him to sleep in a bed again. Oh boy, your plumbing issue sounds terrible. Yuck, what a mess. You sound like you’ve been really busy at home. You are such a hard worker. I wish I had your energy.

I went to the movie yesterday to see Only The Brave about the firefighters in Arizona. It was a very interesting movie to see what the firefighters do..boy, what a hard job and so dedicated. It was sad too. We’ve been having nice weather too. I did go through my coats today for donations. I have quite a few and barely wear one. Hate to wear one in the car.

JL, well, you sure have a few things going on. How’s your dog today? How nice of that woman to come tell you how you made a difference in her life. You must have been wonderful with her to remember you. It sure was a long time ago too!! I’m doing dinner tomorrow night but not in the crockpot. I making lasagna soup. We shall see how it turns out. It will give Louis food for the week too. What did you make? I have told Kayla a million times to block that family. Im not comfortable at all with her having any contact. I still don’t trust the choices she makes daily.

Barb, I told my blood girl the same thing. It always seems like when I start finding someone they leave or transfer. Well, our game against the Chargers was terrible today. I think we will be losing our next few games as we play hard teams and we are playing terrible. I Barely even watched it. Boring. I think it’s good you made a pizza last three days..at least you didn’t eat it in one day!!

Well, that’s my weekend update. It’s not very exciting.

  16. I got my suitcase out two days ago and haven’t put anything in it yet. Don’t know why I’m procrastinating.

Dianne, Sorry your team lost today. I didn’t watch any football today.

Mary, what a mess to have to deal with. Roto Rooter usually does a good job. I’ve had them here a long time ago. I hope your son’s surgery takes care of his pain.

J/L, I hope Ursula’s paw is better. I caught Mellie scratching at the carpet outside the bathroom and then squating to pee. I yelled “no” and picked her up and took her to the litter box. She jumped right out. I watched her for a long time and I don’t know when she finally peed. I don’t know why she did that! I don’t think she has done that before. I keep watching her whenever she leaves my sight.

  17. The weather has changed..again. It was a beautiful week end. Now it is cold and rainy. I sure am glad Zoie isn't bothered by it lol! She did her "business" pretty quickly thanks goodness! I am not fond of getting wet first thing in the morning and she won't go alone.
Dianne, I didn't watch the Broncs. Sorry they lost! The Lions didn't lose either, they had a by week lol!

SacBarb, How weird about Mellie. She must sense that you are leaving her because of the suitcase and is her way of protesting lol!

JL, Vet bills suck! How lucky Ursula is to have such a loving and caring Mamma! :)
I loved your pumpkin painting! How I wish I was talented that way!

  18. Mary The weather is changing here, too. Last night it was unseasonably warm and today is very breezy. My brother texted me last night at 7:30 and it was 92* there in southern California and is supposed to be 100* today. Lordy, I hope some fall weather happens before I go down there in a few weeks.

I'm sorry about your plumbing mess. Did you know Roto Rooter gives a senior discount? Anywho, I had to laugh when you were describing all you had to do to clean up and that you were "pooped". A few years ago, I had to replace all of the sewer line on my property so I'm hoping I don't have to deal with sewer plumbing problems again in my lifetime.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Barb Maybe Mary is right and your kitty is stressing out because of the suitcase and what that means. For her, it not only means you will be gone but that someone strange will be taking care of them.

I picked my friends up at the airport last night at 11:45 and took them home. The airport was a zoo which surprised me because of the late hour. At least the drive there was good....it was a clear night and hardly any traffic so it only took me 20 minutes to get there.

Enjoy your mani-pedi today and have fun on your trip. When I go to my brother's in a few weeks, I will take the dog up to my daughter's a couple of days beforehand as it is a 1 hour drive to get there. That way I can devote the day before my trip to packing and any other last minute errands or doings.

  20. Dianne Lasagna soup sounds really tasty. Did you like it? The crock pot recipe I made a few days ago was Mississippi Pot Roast. Susan Storm posted the recipe and I thought it looked good. I must say I probably prefer my traditional pot roast but it was a tasty alternative. I ate it for two nights and still have leftovers. One thing.... It uses dry Ranch Dressing mix and dry Au Jus gravy mix. I think the au jus mix especially has a lot of sodium in it because I found I was drinking a ton of water after dinner.

That movie about the wildland firefighter hotshots looks really good. I'm pretty sure I heard about that particular crew.

  21. JL, LOUIS said dinner was really good and to make it again. It smelled really good. I didn’t have any as I had a big lunch with Tammy for her bday. It was very easy to make too. I told LOUIS too bad he didn’t know me I cooked as I was fairly decent. I everyone in my family forgets all the years I’ve cooked. You roast sounds good and different with ranch dressing. Did it taste different?
Oh gosh, try and see that movie. It’s very moving and interesting. Whew, too hot at your brothers. I hope it cools down too for you. When do you go? I forget. Is Ursula better?

I’m up late tonight. I start listening to my downloaded music and get lost about the time. I should start it earlier. They are sayings now snow off and on for the next nine days and cold. I hope not snow...I can live with the cold. I sure don’t want to be house bound. I’d like to get LOUIS to go see that movie Thank You For Your Service this weekend. I think we are a doing a bday brunch for Tammy too if it ever gets planned.

I went for my diabetic checkup today and my three month blood sugar was left were than last time. It’s gone at every appt since giving up soda. I had lost weight too so my dr hugged me. She was pleased with our appt

Barb, have a good trip. Hope you got all packed. You remind me of me putting it off. Are you ready for the heat? Sure you will enjoy yourself. Hope you can check in.

Mary, I think that my team has a few losing games on the road coming up. We are not playing worth a darn. Everyone is blaming the QB but he has no offensive line either. Better get ready for cold weather coming from here. I think it might already be cold there.

Well, it about 2:15 am so I had better get to sleep. Night

    ReplyDelete
  22. I’m excited. I lost four more pounds this week and hit a milestone. I’m amazed. I just wish I could see the difference.....and breathe.

Beautiful record high of 84 today...snow and low of 19 tomorrow. We have crazy weather. Had to go to store to stock up on my popsicles!

I was going to have dinner with my granddaughters but they canceled as usual. Disappointing. Oh well.

Barb, I know you’re gone but have a great time today in case you peek in here.

LOUIS eating soup again for dinner. Good thing he likes it.

  23. Dianne, congrats on the weight loss. Todd and Vicki both had to work today, but Todd came home around 2:30 and we went shopping for food for the reunion on Saturday. He is going to do the traditional tri-tip on the grill. I bought a bunch of wine and soda and everyone else is bringing side dishes. Tomorrow Vicki will go get fresh French bread for garlic bread and we will be all set for Sat. One of my sister-in-law is going through post-surgery breast cancer radiation treatments so she and one of her daughter's & family will not be here, plus an Uncle and his family also will not be here. We expect about 20 people. Normally we have about 35 people, but Todd is happy it won't be that big.

    ReplyDelete
  24. J/L, It was 90 in SD yesterday. Unusually hot for October, and it may get to 100 for the reunion on Saturday. Todd planned a bonfire at the beach for tomorrow night. That should be fun. Most of the people expected at the reunion will be there and it should be cool at the beach.

I hope Ursula's paws are better.

  25. Mary, So sorry Matt has to go through that long surgery, but he should feel much better after he heals from it. I have an MRI scheduled for the day I get back from SD. I may have to have another back surgery to fuse more discs. Not nearly as extensive as what Matt has to have. I will pray it all goes well. Does he have a surgery date yet?

  26. Barb Although it's been unusually warm here lately, I woke up this morning to fog. I don't know what that means for the rest of the day once it burns off but it does make it feel more like Halloween. I remember many a night of trick or treating with my kids in cold, drippy fog.

Every morning I put out unsalted peanuts for the squirrels and every day Heckle & Jeckle and their friends take most of them. I can see them waiting in the surrounding trees for me to put the birdseed and peanuts out in the morning. Their supposed to be very intelligent birds and their are stories of them bringing little gifts like shiny pebbles to people who are nice to them. These guys don't bring me crap.... Then again, I did find a stick of sidewalk chalk under a tree in my backyard that could have only come from the chalks the little girl across the street left in her driveway. She's not yet 3 so I know she didn't bring it over here.

It sounds like you are all set to have a good time at your family reunion. Saturday I am taking my daughter to early birthday dinner at Benihana's. We are both really looking forward to it. She's my "baby" and she will be 45. Yikes!

  27. Dianne Your Lasagna Soup sounds really tasty. I've seen various recipes for it online. It sounds similar to a soup my mother used to make and that I now make. I just call it Hamburger Soup and I throw in extra wide egg noodles, a diced potato and mixed vegetables. It's definitely a comfort food for me. My son periodically asks me for the recipe because he's always losing it. I can't believe you made that soup and didn't even taste it.

The pot roast recipe was pretty tasty but I like my traditional pot roast better. I think the aus jus mix must have a lot of sodium in it because I found myself drinking tons of water on the nights I ate it. It makes a lot more than I want or need. I ate it for two nights as is then changed it up a few nights later by adding sauteed mushrooms and sour cream and serving it over noodles like a stroganoff. It literally looked like crap but was tasty.

  28. Mary Thanks for the comment on my pumpkin patch painting. I've decided I'm not done with it. LOL I bought myself a table top easel the other day because I find when I am painting at my dining room table, I end up standing up to paint to give myself a better angle. That means I am standing slightly bent forward for a long period of time and the next day my back is killing me.

I am sorry to hear about Matthew's upcoming back and neck surgeries. I guess it was a blessing in disguise that his supervisor forced him to go to the doctor about his limited neck mobility. Once he gets through the surgeries, he will probably feel so much better that he'll wish he did it much sooner.

My dog's paw is totally fine now. I kept her home from her usually Monday outing with her doggy friends and I felt bad for her about it. Today she will get to go, though.

  30. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BARB! I should have mailed your card early but best laid plans.....and all that stuff. Hopefully, you'll have it when you get back home.

  31. JusLin I am glad you got the table easel, especially with your back problems.Yes, I was very impressed with that painting! Even imagining it hanging on my office wall lol!
I hate that you have to have more surgery!I am glad your Ursala is doing better.

SacBarb. I hope you had a great Birthday!
I couldn't help but laugh about Heckle & Jeckle!! LOL, @ their not bringing you crap!! We mostly have red squirrels sneaking a few seeds. They don't hog the feeder though!

Dianne,I see your Broncs don't play until tomorrow. Our Lions sucked today! Too many missed opportunities! Hooray and losing the lbs!!

The Halloween party went very well. No drunks giving me trouble! They sure love to dress up! So many cute outfits! The place is always packed. Jim set up my speakers and went home.No one knows how to set up all my wires, cables, puter etc but me so I really don't let anyone help me there. Jim used to help with the Karaoke, but his right hand is so crippled from arthritis, that he kept hitting the wrong keys and messing things up. I finally "gently" told him not to touch my puter lol!! He came back later to help me tear down. I was so glad it wasn't raining! It has been raining off and on all week, with more of the same next week.

Matthew is a bit apprehensive about the whole thing.Tomorrow he sees our family Dr., so we will no more about the surgery date.
I cringe when I think of all the things he tried, to get his neck to turn. He even had me hold his head and try to force it turn! He wanted that job so bad! His back/neck specialist said he could have been crippled himself!

I bought a few grosseries today. I put a roast in the crock pot last night. It came out great! I was a bit worried because some of our meat has been tough! We always order a 1/4 of a beef from our farmer friend. We have never been disappointed, until now. The hamburg has been great, but some of the roasts and steaks, not so much. I guess I will no longer use the oven for the roasts since the crock pot did a good job.
I like knowing where my meat comes from. I know they are free roaming and grain fed, not with fillers. We pay by the pound to have it cut and frozen.
    Have a great week all!!

  32. Hello......HOWS EVERYONE DOING? whoops didn’t mean to do caps! LOUIS and I went to movie yesterday. We don’t go together much as we don’t like the same movies but this time we did want to see Thank You For Your Service. It’s another true story and very good movie. The two movies the last two weeks have been very good. We had an early dinner after the movie. Today we had a family breakfast out for Tammy’s bday. We were home early and then a boring afternoon. It was so beautiful out that I would have liked to take a ride up LOUIS wanted to watch football.

Mary, I watched some of your game tonight. It was close and I was cheering for your team. I think tomorrow night will not be a pretty game. Chiefs are really good...broncos not too great. The chargers and raiders lost today so that helps us out. I’ll bet last night was fun for you. I love looking at people in costumes. I wished I lived by you and I’d come to the karaoke night....not sing...just watch.
Be sure and let us know what dr has tomsay about your son. Scary about earlier procedures. I’m glad nothing bad happened. Is there a chance he could get that job back after surgery? You can always count on the crockpot making meat tender.

JL, did you paint this weekend? I’ll bet your back felt a lot better. I think you paint good. I wish I could do that like you do. You’ll have to go see these movies. I think you’d really like them. We are going to a place to watch the game with Tammy and a couple of people tomorrow night so no cooking this week. We don’t usually do that and LOUIS isn’t thrilled but it’s where Kayla works.

Barb. Sounds like you had a good birthday and reunion weekend. Did you end up with quite a few there? I think you don t come home until Tuesday. Is it hot there? It was 70 here today but back to 35 and snow tomorrow but 60 for Halloween. It’s such crazy weather.

LOUIS has been watching the World Series for it seems like hours tonight. It’s still on and it’s 11:20 here. I have no interest in baseball to watch...boring.

Time to listen to some music, check fb and go to sleep.

  35. Mary Now you are getting Barb and I confused with each other. LOL My back bugs me but I have never had to have back surgery. That's Barb. I am the one that puts peanuts out for the squirrels and have them stolen by the crows, not Barb.

Anyway, I'm glad you didn't have any big mishaps at your gig. It looked like people did a really good job with their costumes. It's too bad the timing was good for you to meet up with Lynn and Karina. That would have been fun.

  36. Dianne I was going to paint this weekend but it didn't work out. For one thing, I went to put the easel together and it was defective! I have to return it for another one. Dang!

So far, the plan is to go to early dinner tonight with my friends and then to see the wildland firefighter movie. It's overcast and cool and I think we are supposed to have rain coming next weekend. That will be very welcomed.

  37. Barb I assume you won't be watching DWTS tonight and will catch up later. Me, too, as I will be out tonight so I have the show set to record. Of course it will be Halloween themed so that ought to be interesting.

  38. Barb2 Well, plans just changed and we won't be going to dinner and movie until Wednesday so I guess I will be watching DWTS tonight. Now I have to figure out what's for dinner, darn it!

  39. JustlIn, I can't believe I keep getting you two mixed up! I even scroll up over and over to make sure I have the right comments with the right owl lol!! Sorry, my bad!

Matt's Appmt isn't until Wed. I got that mixed up too!! He has been working at "Lyft". He seems to really like it. He has gotten some really good tips. He got a couple of Asian men today. They said, "we go DMV". They were actually going to the drivers training place.Another gal had a rabbit. She said that the last driver wouldn't let her take it. Matt said he would. He got a $20 tip :)

Well, after our "turlet" incident, we now have a "freezer" incident! We keep it in the basement. I went down to get some meet and found the top two shelves of meat defrosted, or near it! We have only had it for 4 years. We didn't get the extended warranty, so out of luck. It would be too costly to repair. Jim is going to get a new one. Mean while, I am waiting for my Tree farm neighbor to pick up our meat to put in his freezer :(. I swear!!! I cooked up a lot of the hamburg. Made lasagna and chili. Most of the burger meat is still frozen thank goodness! The steaks and roasts were partially thawed, but not too bad. I have been scrambling up and down the stairs loading and packing meat, sorting and trying to save all my strawberry jam!
Jim is of no help in times like these! He just sits in his chair. I have not been happy with him! I think he is afraid of all the stairs and his breathing! I did say a few gentle words of disapproval to him!

  40. Hi...well, the Broncos were dumb again tonight. Kind of hard to win a game with five turnovers. Our QB had more completions to the other team than his own...not good. We really needed to win too. JL, I see your coach is also getting a new QB. We went to a restaurant/bar to watch the game. It was very empty but fun with our little group and had dinner too.

JL, you will like the movie. It certainly holds your interest. Sorry about your easel. It’s such a pain when that happens. I hate having to take things back. I have. I have been wanting to replace my shoes with Easy Spirit. I have a big foot and wide. They never have my size in wide anymore so I took a chance and ordered medium and they arrived today and they fit. i was so happy. They are on sale so I ordered another pair tonight. They are very comfy. Maybe my foot got skinny.....lol

Mary, boy you’ve had some things lately. i remember having a freezer issue years ago...what a mess. My then husband had elk that defrosted in there....yuck, what a smell. Glad Matt is liking his job. I’ll bet he gets to meet and talk to a lot of different people. He kind of gets to set his hours too, right? I heard a older lady at ww saying she does it only during the day for some extra money.

Well, we had rain today and cold but the snow missed us. I’m glad. I hope it stays nice the rest of the week as we have football games to go to on Friday evening. It’s that darn wind that makes it cold. We usually go to my sons for Halloween but we are passing this year since we will be out there Friday. He lives about 45 min away.
