Serendipity

Serendipity

by Vig

Thomas is twenty-seven years old, deafblind, developmentally delayed, a little person, and one of the most important people in my life. Thomas came into my world on December 30th, 1990. I was working as a teaching assistant with students with special needs and did some home support on the side. I was called into the agency that I worked for to hear about this medically fragile ten year old who at the time was the size of a three year old and weighed twenty-five pounds. He didn’t see or hear well. He didn’t talk. He could only walk a few steps and he tired out because of serious cardiac problems. I was extremely apprehensive when I went to his house on that December day. Even after many years of working with children with specials needs, I didn’t know what to expect. The picture that had been painted and the reports I read had been bleak. I walked into the living room where he was sitting against the stereo speaker feeling the vibrations of the music - and my heart soared. There sat a very cute young fellow with curly strawberry blond hair, big thick glasses, a sweet face and very worried eyes. I sat down in front of him and let him process and understand that there was someone there. Suddenly his feet were in my lap. I began to rub them. When I stopped he let me know that he wanted more by thrusting his tiny feet into my hands and clapping his hands – his sign for more. Suddenly we had a game going. I rubbed his feet. I stopped. He had to do something to keep the game going. I realized then, that despite what I had read and heard, he was just a kid like any other kid who wanted to play and to connect with other people. From that moment on, I was hooked. I eventually became his school Intervenor (the person who works one to one with a person who is deafblind) for many years. He is the one that has lead me to what I am doing now. I knew nothing about deafblindness before I met him and now I am a teacher consultant with students with deafblindness. Meeting Thomas led me to my heart and back to school to become a teacher and to become a specialist in deafblindness.
Serendipity is defined as the gift of finding agreeable things not sought for. So look back in your life…what wonderful thing has happened to you when you weren’t expecting it or planning it? By meeting one person or going to one event, what did that lead to?

  4. Okay here is one and it is an obvious one.

    Meeting my husband-

It was Sept. 23rd 2000 and on that day I just ended another relationship (he was a toad). I had just turned 30 that month and I thought for sure I was never going to meet anyone special. I was very sad that day.

It was also my mom's birthday and I forgot to wish her a happy birthday (I was too busy being depressed). My parents were at a wedding reception that I wasn't invited too. I decided to crash it anyway, because I had to go wish my mom a happy birthay. My day was already awful and I didn't want to make it worse by not paying respect to my mom.

So I crashed the reception and quickly went to my mom's table to give her a hug. I was going to leave right after the hug, but then a funny thing happened.

My future husband asked me to dance. That is how we met!

Six months after that we bought a house together and then eight months after buying the house we were married.

    Hi Lynn!

I didn't get back to comment last night, but wanted to welcome Melissa!

Are there any wedding bells in the future?? :)

    Have a great day today!

  15. When I was college I always said I wanted to teach intermediate children (grades 3-5).

I did not want grades lower then that, because then I would have to teach them how to read.

That scared the heck out of me.

When it was time to do my student teaching I requested older children.

They gave me first grade! I was so upset and scared. How the heck am I going to teach them how to read.

However, much to my surprise it all clicked. I taught first grade for the longest time. I love to teach children how to read. It is about the only thing I really feel confident about.

Right now I'm at second grade and I'm hoping that is the highest I ever go!

  16. VIG: What a great blog! I, too, would be interested in an update on Thomas!

Good morning, iteach, Sleep, HOdi, Lynn D, and Judy!

Serendipity. Yes! For me, it was in my first year of college. One of the professors teaching intro Psych was a bearish kind of man who held up the textbook and, in front of the class, proclaimed it a "total abortion"! That helped pique my interest in his topic area, human information processing, and I ended up majoring in it and pursuing graduate studies in cognition.

    The rest, as they say...

  17. Good Morning want2sleep (1st again), Iteach (hope your throat gets better soon,) Jodi, Lynn, East Bay J and Whabbear.

Looks like a great blog VIG. I will read it in a minute.

Tango is still walking on 3 legs and still has her other symptoms so I guess it's a hospital day for her. They will do x-rays on her leg and her heart. I will get an appointment when the Vet gets in at 9:30. I am trying hard not to think about it so I will now read my friend and neighbour's blog.

  18. Jodi: Today is setup for the event. We have on huge mama of a tent to put up it takes 6 people! Tomorrow is the event and yes I will take pics! The question is will I be in any of them?? LOL

Great stories everyone! I am enjoying reading them as I run around. I get a reward for each task completed. I sit down and read! LOL

Tinka: Glad you checked in. I will continue to send positive thoughts for your baby!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Morning y'all! WOW VIG that was a fantastic blog! Do you still stay in touch with this young man? I assume he is about 28 now? (too early to do math-haha)

I will be back later with a story! My brain has to wake up-I've been awake for about 2 hours, doing housework, but I'm not fully awake yet! haha

Congrats on first Want2sleep! Do you EVER sleep!? lmao

  20. Good morning Hooters!! Way to go Want-1st!

Vig, I loved your blog- I really smiled at your story and the path that Thomas led you down.

Jodi- I hope you forget that damn camera. As you know Mr. Goldie and I were supposed to celebrate our 25th anniversary next Wed. Not so sure now...... The man had mulch delivered this morning. As I am leaving for work, the truck pulls up and he is desperately trying to get a tarp to stay put so they can dump the mulch on it. It was windy, it was raining and the shit was blowing out of the trees. Soooooooooo, he says "I need help, just step on this corner and hold it". I said "no, I'm going to get wet!". He does the 'look' and I give in. I stand in the wind, rain and blowing frigging tree shit and hold the tarp. The truck backs up..dumps and I get not only water from the heavens, I get mulch all over my pant legs!!!!!

So surfice it to say, I had to change my slutty clothes into normal work attire, and I look like a fucking drowned rat. I have fine, thin, flyaway hair (on a good day) so you can imagine what I look like now. Sure hope he wasn't planning on sex tonight..lol

  21. VIG - What a beautiful, heartwarming story. You also are a wonderful writer. What talent we have on this blog. It amazes me. Your kind loving nature comes through in that story. No wonder I love you so much. I believe 'serendipity' brought you, Zona and me together on this blog. I believe we were meant to be friends for life. To think we met on cyberspace and you live 5 minutes from me is definitely serendipitous to be sure. It was the same with Zona. I happened to write my email address on the blog (something I never do) on the day that Zona was reading the blog but too nervous about writing on it. She wrote me instead to tell me about her Remy. We have been friends ever since. That's how we became "The Bunnies Three".

  22. Thank you for the blog today VIG. I think what you do is fantastic. I wish down here having Special Needs children in the classrooms were handled as well. Instead of having someone who is trained helping them one-on-one in the class, they throw them into overcrowed classrooms with teachers who are not trained to handle them. Or they have a parent volunteer who is there basically to babysit them. It's sad. I'm not sure that everyone here knows this, but my paternal grandparents were both blind. My grandfather was very involved in the Washington State School for the Blind here in Vancouver. Everytiem a new student was coming from somewhere within the State to go to school they transitioned at my grandparents house. One of there dearest friends started the Piano Hospital. It was a nationally famous school to teach blind people how to tune and fix pianos. Emile died a few years ago, but I believe the Piano Hospital is still running.
    Ok....Have tons to do.

VIG....this will be on my mind all day.....but in a good way!

  48. Hey Owls!! Hope your week went well and you have a fun weekend planned!!

Vig, I loved your blog!! The first thing that came to my mind was the birth of my twin boys. I was set on having just my daughter and stopping there. She was the perfect infant though. Never cried, always smiling and happy, healthy... no issues at all.

Then one day Mr. Man comes home from work and tells me he has been thinking that we should have one more. At first I was like "NO WAY!", but then I thought about it and decided to give it another thought. I came up with the plan that we would try for only one year and if it didn't happen by then, no more kids. (I knew it would take longer than that because it took us 3-years the first time.)

Within 2 weeks I was pregnant, and within 1-1/2 months I learned that I was carrying twins. I was pissed!

I couldn't believe that this was happening. My two closest friends had just had miscarriages, so I felt incredible guilt. Why on earth would God give me 2 babies when I was satisfied with having just my one? People would always tell me what a blessing it was and how they always wanted twins. I went into a deep fog that took me over 3 years to come out of. Maybe it was depression...I am still not sure.

The twins were born at 36 weeks and due to under-developed lungs were taken immediately to the infant ICU. I didn't get to hold one of them for a whole week, and we missed out on all the early bonding. I loved them, and I worried about them. I cried for them, but I still felt distant. We had a live in childcare helper that I literally allowed to do a lot of what I should have been doing, but that fog just got thicker and I seemed to sit back and watch.

It wasn't until the twins turned 3 that I suddenly felt like the fog lifted. Where had all the time gone? I went into Mommy-mode and felt like I needed to start fighting for them like I had never done before. They had developmental delays which strongly effected their speech and I was going to do everything possible to get them the help they needed.

Anyway, I find myself reflecting a lot about these two little boys that give me such incredible love and have taught me so much about myself, the world and human development. I didn't think I could love a second child as much as my first. I really never thought I could have enough love in me for 3 kids. It is a lesson I would have fought hard not to learn, but now... Serendipity Baby! I am grateful for the blessings that I never asked for.

Sorry...I think I wrote another novel.

  54. Good Afternoon Everyone! Just doing a fly by between appointments.

VIG: LOVED your blog. You are truly a kind and gentle person of great warmth, patience and caring. The work you do is so important, and I am glad you found your calling. Not just for you, but for all the people you have helped along the way. You are an amazing person.

The moment of serendipity that came to my mind today was when lurking over on the other blog, I saw a post by an nice lady whose dog had eaten a pork bone. She seemed so frightened. I am usually shy, but I decided to go back, find her email address and write to her to reassure her that my dog had had much the same experience and was fine. That lady was TINKA. From there we began emailing, she gave me the courage to post on the blog and get a Myspace. I met the most wonderful people there, and those people are now here in the Night Owls Nest. Without taking that one step, I would not have made the great friends that I have here, and my life would be so much poorer for it. Love this place, love all you guys. CPGEM, thank you again for feathering the nest we all now call home. Thank you TINKA for being so sweet.

    CONGRATS WANT on FIRST!!

Gotta keep going so I'll swoop back in to read comments in a bit. Waving hello to everyone, have a wonderful day!! Be good!

  57. I forgot to tell you my serendipity story.

I was a senior in high school and hot after this guy Mike. There was a dance being held at the Vet's hall and my girlfriends and I were going. I knew Mike would be there. I was going to drive because my friends were going to meet their guys there and go home with them.

We stopped at the local drive-in to get a cherry coke (I'm really dating myself here) before the dance. I kept the radio on while we drank our cokes and when we went to leave, the car wouldn't start...battery dead!

Mike and another guy cruised through the drive-in just in time to see my plight and helped me get the car started. So off to the dance we went and Mike was being a butt so I was pouting. The guy that was with him asked me to dance, and I thought it might make Mike jealous so I danced with him. Well, that was the moment that changed my life forever. We were married 7 months later and 34 years later to the day my husband was buried. I didn't realize that until some months later when a co-worker asked me how I met my husband and in telling her the story it hit me. I will forever be gratful that I had that dead battery.

  58. Hi owls!! What a wonderful blog Vig!! You and Thomas taught each other so many things about life.

iteach, omg it is a good thing you finally got the medicine you need.

lynn d, good luck with the event!

Tinkatia, is Tango ok? Hope so!

Hello to a every one of you! Have a good evening!

  59. I just got a call from my Vet and Tango's leg injury isn't serious. It is in the soft tissue, there are no broken bones. How she got the injury I will never know. With regards to her heart, it is enlarged and there is a serious heart murmur that wasn't there a month ago. There is heart medicine she can go on. The bottom line I guess is to love her and enjoy her for as long as God wants to leave her on this earth. I am hoping and praying for another 6 years but I may be pressing my luck. She can not exercise for a few weeks so it means Tia will have to go on her walk without her big sister. She is not going to like that as she knows no other world than one that has Tango by her side on every walk. We will just have to get used to the changes and enjoy every day we are given. August the 4th is Tango's 11th birthday and I am going to have a big party with lots of pictures.
Thanks to all of you who have sent words of encouragement last night and today. You all are simply fabulous.

  60. Tink:

Animals are very resilent. Don't let this get you down. I know that they grade them, did the vet say what grade level it was Tink?

I had a dog with a murmer, and he is still romping around like a puppy and he is 8 now. I no longer have him, but his was a grade 1-2. He is on no medication.

Is there a way you can carry Tango in one of those shoulder carry thingies? It will be good for her to get out with her sister and would calm all of you I think.

    Hugs to you Audrey~

  73. K-Girl - The Vet didn't mention a number, just said it was serious enough to require medication. I will ask her though. Your suggestion was great about carrying Tango. Right now she doesn't want to leave her bed but as soon as she feels a little better that's what I will do. The vet said she shouldn't go on walks for a few weeks. Love, Tinka

  86. Hi to ALL Owls! Had a lot of catching up to do after being AWOL yesterday. Just got in a bit ago from seeing Sex in the City. We knew we HAD to see it the first day, before too many spoilers hit!! Let me know if you WANT a spoiler.

    * * * *
From Area 51~~Wasn't here yesterday so...

Carol~~Hope you knew my "So good to see you!" comment meant "So good to SEE you". Next time, no shades!!

    Welcome, Melissa!! and ...

Mo: How cute are you?!? and congrats again!!

  87. VIG~~Wonderful blog, as are all your writings. Try as I might to break my time-wasting nest addiction so that I can get Spring cleaning done before Summer, it's the writings from dear Owl hearts that bring me back again and again. Thinking about serendipity...or trying to think what events in life are not serendipitous. That might be easier!

*Goldie~~If the "tree shit" was from cottonwoods, I can empathize. Breezy sunshine here, but it looks like it's snowing...except the 'flakes' are huge and pollen-laden. Talk about itchy eyes! Just checked the BB Lunch photos, *Jodi~~Looks like fun!

*Glynis~~what a touching story. Thanks for sharing.

*Tinka~~Hugs to you and to Tango. One sentence of your post jumped out at me as if you had written it in flashing neon lights. May I repeat?
We will just have to get used to the changes and enjoy every day we are given. Well, THERE's life in one sentence, eh?!?

Any Kevin Costner fans? Off to see him sing (with his band, Modern West) tonight...a fund-raiser for U of O baseball. He's a good friend of the coach.

  88. Bono - good to see you back..

Sadly - I NEVER did watch "Sex in the City" - so I have no desire to see the movie!! I might be a disgrace to the sisterhood!! (hanging head in shame!)

  92. Hi MEK~~Missed ya!! Kevin was even at batting practice today!

Don't want to be a blog-hog here, but have to say...

JustLin~~If you're still prOWLing, buh-bye, be safe and enjoy LOTS o' Custard!!

Have to share some good news...before I retired last October, a bunch of us (I was reluctant and literally last minute)had a class-action lawsuit against the County over unpaid work hours/breaking contracts. Just got a letter today. We won...$475,000!!

  93. Jodi - I hadn't posted my last comment when your phone call came in. It was great talking to you especially since I was just looking at your pictures. That is so sweet of you to call.

  94. Bonnie - That's great news. Your share will come in handy I am sure of that. If you don't need it you could take all of us Night Owls to Hawaii for a couple of weeks. LOL

  97. Thanks Tinka, Iteach & Turtle! If the 'bunch of us' were a smaller bunch, I'd gladly treat us to Hawaii (on Carol's 69, of course)! As it is, it'll pay my $500/mo. insurance premiums for a while...and maybe a few tanks of gas ($4.09 low-$4.32 high today on my route).

(and before Joey catches me, just noticed my movie title should have read S. AND T.C., not 'in'.)

Now to go catch me some Kevin Costner. Have a great night and a wonderful weekend, all!

I have had a very busy day of meetings and now my little friend Luke is here with me for a sleep over so his foster mom can have a well-deserved break.I love having him here but I haven't had a lot of time on the blog. 101. bon bon -great news!!

mek- I NEVER watched Sex in the City either, thought I was the only one!

Jodi and I had a great time, but that bloody owl was a drinking mess. Twirling her tassles, swigging down 5 JD's... I had to wear my sunglasses in the resturaunt I was so embarrased!! HOdi and I were on our best behavior though.

I also was gifted with Potato salad-which I shared at dinner with Mr. Goldie (I have forgiven him). It was as awesome as usual!

Jodi- I found the perfect frigging dress...and about 5 other things I wasn't really looking for but they screamed "buy me, buy me" and so I did.

ROFLMAO @ whabbear! I wasn't sure if I should be offended or not that you didn't want to have sex with me. I decided that I would be more offended if you did!!!

Tink- glad that Tango's leg is not serious. I am sure the meds will help with the heart. :)

MEK and Goldie: Raising my hand never watched Sex in the City either. Just don't get it! Kim Cantrell bugs me too so that may be why.

WOW... can you say meant to be...

I could say my serindipity moment would be the first time i layed eyes on Mr.IBB...

I walked into the little bar I went to every night after work... I worked 3-11 and hit the bar before going home or to the next party...
But i walked and saw him sitting there... and said to myself " I am taking that cute little blonde home with me tonight..."..and I did...( and I rocked his world and he never left)..I know TMI...
But tehn he told me the story of how he got that bar that night...considering he lived 45 miles away!!!
He worked at a country club.. the guy whos parents owned the bar was the chef at the country club..
Mr. IBB had been stood up for a date that night... he was sulking at the CC bar.. the chef.. Mike.. told him don't stay here... lets go to my bar .. and the rest is history!!!

  111. WOW Glynis, that was a sweet story!! Thanks for sharing with us!!:)

ROFLMAO@BONO!! First congrats on your winnings!! WOOHOO!! That was funny that you corrected yourself haha

Okay, here is a cliff notes version of my story!

It was Fall 1998 and I had just gotten off work. I actually stayed around for some reason(fate) and just mingled with co-workers....Well a co-worker off duty had come by with her little boy and asked if my little brother and I wanted to join them at a Hayride that night!(I think it was the day before Halloween)..I had not had any plans, so I said yes.

Well, we get to the hayride and it was not heavily advertised and was put on by a local family out on their farm. I see a NOVA pulling up and we got excited that someone else had showed up! lol

I began talking to the guy and his friend that showed up! Well, the guy turned out to be Ernie, my new best friend!(See my photo album on myspace)Most of you know about his passing in 2001..Well we ended up talking that night and realized he knew some of my brothers' friends and some of my friends, but we had never met each other!! lol

He went back to my house that night and we made pizza. We had such a blast and were best friends from that day forward until his untimely passing in Feb. 2001! I have ALWAYS believed people come into your life for a reason...You meet the people you are supposed to meet at the right time!

So much for the cliff notes version! haha

    ReplyDelete
  112. IBB, I love your story and your singing! lol

Oh and just because I only had about 2 and 1/2 yrs. with Ernie, he'll always be my guardian angel and will be looking over me! I have never had a connection with someone the way I did with him! We always said we were soulmates!:)

    ReplyDelete
  113. I think Dianne_playing_sick_in_Denver is faking it!!!! I just talked to her...and she sounded just fine to me! Rather sweet, actually~ :D And laughed appropriately at all my jokes! :)~ lol.....~

    ReplyDelete
  114. I worded that wrong but y'all know what I meant! He was only in my life for 2 1/2 yrs in the flesh, but remains in my heart and watching over my shoulder forever!:)

  115. Thanks Tina!:) loving ur black man;)hehe

Everyone who comes into my apartment(which aren't many-haha)comments on my owl!!

Thanks so much! My good friend Michelle was over today and I was helping her with her college assignments and she had her girls with her! They were mesmerized by it and she also thought it was so pretty! I keep my note with it and one of the kids read it outloud! LMAO

  123. iteach, SacBarb, IBB...your stories of how you met your husbands are wonderful and give this chronically single woman hope!!!

Bono and Maureen...you have both had very good news in the last day or so! That is so great! I am really happy for the both of you!

    Update on Thomas...
It is funny for me to write that name as that is not actually his name, but out of respect for his amazing family, I changed his name.

He is now 27. He lives in a group home and has an Intervenor (one to one worker for a person who is deafblind) who works with him during the day. When I was with him for the first couple of years, it was felt that he was dying and there was nothing that could be done. An amazing cardiologist arrived at the local Children's Hospital, who believed that there was a particular surgery that would work for him and it did. So the young man who was not supposed to live past ten is now twenty-seven. The surgery gave him a fighting chance and a second chance at life. It's just fantastic! He has grown abit and is now quite hefty and is adorable...a very cute wee man! I don't live in the same town as him anymore, but every time I visit that city I always go and visit him. I am never sure if he knows who I am, until I sit down in front of him and very soon his foot is back in my lap for a foot rub. And our game continues on!!!! He is amazing and I love him to pieces!

    ReplyDelete
  124. Is anyone watching the National Spelling Bee being broadcast from Walshington DC? These kids are amazing. So far there are only two words that I have even heard of and I know I couldn't spell them. They are in the 12th round and started with 11 kids and are down to 3. The 11th round is the first round that any were eliminated.
