Book Club Therapy

by Sandie

I've loved books since I started to read in the first grade. I remember Mom taking my sister and me, also a big reader, to the library every other Saturday morning. I loved it! The feeling of walking into the library with all those books just waiting for me to read them is the same feeling I get today when I walk into a library or book store.

Seven years ago, when I lived in Maryland, I decided to start a neighborhood book club. About nine of my neighbors/friends joined. We decided that we'd take turns choosing the books and whomever chose the next book would host the meeting. We'd have coffee/tea and desserts since we were meeting in the evenings, once a month. From that first meeting, I was hooked.

Our first book pick, hosted by my friend/neighbor, Carol, was House of Sand and Fog by Andre DuBus III. We all liked the book and had a good discussion about it. But what was really great was that in talking about the book, we talked about us. Every book after that just led to more discussion about our lives--from raising our kids to our religious beliefs. It was better than therapy. We quickly made the Vegas rule--what happens in book club stays in book club! We were sharing so much of ourselves that we wanted everyone to feel safe.

A few months after we started that club, Carol was diagnosed with colon cancer. A year later, she passed away. I, and I know others as well, felt such a great gift in that book club, because we had all grown so close and had shared so much with Carol. A week before she was diagnosed, as I was driving her home from a book club meeting in which we had discussed religion, Carol told me that although she had converted to Judaism from Catholicism when she married her husband, she just KNEW when she died she would see Jesus in Heaven. I've never forgotten that and it gave me a sense of peace when she passed.

When we moved to Georgia a few years ago, I was very sad to leave my family and friends--and my book club!! On my last meeting, the club surprised me and had pink t-shirts printed saying, "Sandie's Book Club" and listing all the books we'd read! They're still together and we exchange book lists.

It didn't take me long to start a book club here! We've been meeting for about a year now and once again, I've made some great friends. What I love most about book club is sharing/talking with other women but I also love that I've read books I wouldn't have chosen to read. Have I liked all of them? Heck, no! But that's the other great thing--when we have some people who liked the book and others who didn't, it makes for a much more interesting and fun meeting!! And, almost every book somehow relates to our own lives and we start talking about us. No therapy could compare!

For July, we're reading a book I picked by one of my favorite authors, Jodi Picoult. It's called Change of Heart. It's actually about the death penalty, something we just discussed in the nest. I can't wait to discuss it in our club.

I'm listing some of the books (from my old club and current club) we've read in hopes that you'll broaden your reading experience and maybe even start a book club of your own!

  2. Congrats on first Lynn D! hehehehe

    Sandie great blog!

What a wonderful tradition you started in your old town and now in your new one!

I looked at your list and have read many of the same books.

However there are many on the list that I have not, and now I have something to take to the library with me! Wahoo I make a trip about once a week and fill up my book bag.

I love it when I go in and find that one of my favorite authors has a new book out or I discover a new author that I had not read before. It is like a perfect present with a hardcover wrapping!

I too started reading at an early age. I remember getting books in the mail. This was something my mother started for me before she passed away and my Dad continued the book club for me.

I remember being in 6th grade and doing 64 oral book reports. (I have written about this before) I just know all of those kids hated me! LOL Hey I got extra credit!

In 8th and 9th grade I was reading everything! Some books I know my Dad would have had a heart attack if he knew. I remember checking out Erica Jongs Fear of Flying in the 8th grade and the Librarian asking me if my parents knew?? I looked her right in the eye and said yes, my parents don't restrict what I read! LMAO

Books have been my friend and comfort my whole life!

  3. Hey Mo! It is easy to get up early when you don't sleep! LOL

Actually I am getting stuff done early as we are going to the Pacific Northwest Mushroom Festival later this morning.

Mr. Lynn D is so excited he wants to go to the classes on growing his own.

I am going because they have booths set up on how to cook them everyway imaginable and you get a free plate and fork to sample all the goodies.

  4. SANDIE...congrats on your blog today. Great topic and writing! I guess there is so much more to a book club then I ever imagined. Sadly, I don't read enough anymore. I admit it...I liked the silly romance novels! And biographies and mysteries. Never into the sci-fi stuff. Maybe I should get into self-help books!

As a child, my favorite book was The Boxcar Children! And I had read a ton of the Flower's in the Attic...series.

Now, I don't even have time to read my address book!!!!!

MO~~Do you finally get a play-day today? Miss you!

Today's the first full day of the Olympic Trials here and we're under an excessive heat warning from this a.m. til Sunday night. It's gonna get H*O*T!! I feel for the distance runners.

Hope everyone's off to a great start for the weekend~~BBL (assuming we don't melt).

Not really a play a day. But I am making the most of it before I have to leave...soon!

  14. Good morning! Thanks for the kind comments! Wow, I didn't realize how long that blog was until I just saw it!! Yikes.

Lynn D, LOL at your hubby so excited about the mushroom festival! He sounds like a fun-gi!
    Have a great time!

Hi Mo! So sorry you have to work today!

    Hi Tinka, how is Tango?

Bon'O, stay cool today--wanna come over and get in my pool??

  15. Good Morning Lynn (first again), Maureen (almost first), Lynn, BonO and Sandie -

Great blog Sandie - What a fun way to spend the summer.

I am rushing this morning. Tango is a little better but still needs extra care. She can't have anything hard so I am not able to give them their usual dog chewie that I get from the Vet. They get one each morning and keeps them content while I am on the computer. They are trying so hard for attention right now I must tend to them. I will be back on this afternoon. Have a great Saturday everyone.

  16. Mo~~You are one cute piggy...but my vote is for your other avatar. We see you so seldom, it's good to 'see' you!

Sandie~~"fun-gi" **lol**. And, yes, I'd LOVE to come spend the day in your pool. If I had unlimited resources, a pool would be first on my 'must-have' list. Can't think of a better way to start and end each day. **sigh**

Lynn you are so quick lately! Congrats on first!

Hey to Mo, Pink, Bono and Sandie :)

Great topic today. I love to read too, just never seem to have time. I have a couple books I bought a few years ago and still haven't read: Dive off Clausens Pier and Lovely Bones.

Maybe now I'll be motivated to dig them out!

Be back later, have a great Saturday!

  19. Hi Shirley! Thank you for breakfast and flowers!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Good morning lynn d. Congrats on first! Have a great time at the mushroom festival!

Good morning maureen, tinka, bono and sandie!

Tinkatia, I hope Tango is feeling better this morning.

Sandie, I loved reading your blog. Book clubs are a wonderful idea. I read many of the books you mentioned but not all of them. I have a question, sandie. How do you handle someone you invite into the book club and they monopolize the conversation? They turn everything into their life's problems. Some gals want to tell them to leave. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Good morning ebj and shirley! You flew in while I was typing.
    Shirley, ty for the breakfast!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Sandie thanks for the blog and good morning!

Bon I was going to MS you back but I can't get in once again. That's what I get for going to Huffpo first for my morning news. Wish I was going to go to the Olympic trials that actually sounds like more fun. Put on your sunscreen!

Mo: No one can ever call you blog hog! But the Avatar is really cute!

Sandie: Mr. Lynn D would be very jealous if I told him you had a pool! He has been dreaming about putting one in our backyard for the last 2 years.

Shirley Good Morning to you! Thanks for Breaky!

EBJ: I highly recomment you read! LOL

    Ok I better get hopping!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ha I finally got in to MS! Bon you have mail!

Now I must step away from the computer and hit the shower!

  24. Ohhhhh...Great blog Sandie!!

I am a read-a-holic! I remember spending many a hot summer day in the cool library. I would even help shelve the books.

When I visited my Grandparents, I would eagerly anticipate the arrival of the Bookmobile for days. We didn't have one where I lived and I just thought this was the neatest thing.

I have been reading a lot lately, as I am still confined to the couch, and just finished "The Lady in the Palazzo" by Marlena DeBlasi. A rather silly title, but a very interesting book. It is a memoir of her experiences living in Italy and reads as if it were a novel.

I also just finished several books by Rick Bragg, a Pulitzer prize winning columnist, who gives a fascinating account of growing up in the deep south.

I think I have read everything by Anne Tyler and Anita Shreve, both excellent authors. I could go on and on........

    ReplyDelete
  25. Good morning and congrats on 1st Lynn D! Are there going to be any "special" mushrooms at this festival? Have a good time.

Good morning Maureen, Tinka, Bonnie, Sandie, EBJ and Grandma Moses!

Sandie I use to love reading all my Star Trek book. I still have them in boxes in my closet. I loved reading the Anne of Green Gables series too. The last 18 months or so my eyes have not been real good. Sometimes they are blurry for days. But I don't have insurance and I don't have the $600.00 or $700.00 for an eye exam and glasses.

I use to read in bed at night. I would tell myself just a few pages but in up read half the book.

My friend's daughter (whose grade 6 grad I went to the other night) loves to read book. They are ususally about horses. For her b-day or christmas I get her a gift card to a book store. It's a great gift and she loves to pick the book out.

    Great blog topic Sandie!

    Have a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks for breakfast, Shirley!

EBJ, I've read both of those books, they're good--you should read them!!

Lynn D and Bon'O, we've had the pool almost two years now and it's really great. My hubby, who was the one saying he didn't want to spend the money, is now the one who LOVES the pool. He is in it all the time.

Grandma Moses, that has happened in my first book club--there were a couple of conversation hogs. We decided it's up to the person leading the discussion (the hostess) to steer the conversation back even if it means interrupting her. Some hostesses have trouble doing that but there were always others who didn't seem to mind! :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Good Morning Owls!

I have extra dogs scheduled today to make up for being closed next weekend for the holiday so this is a quick fly-by. :)

Sandie: Kudos for a well written blog that made me wish there was a book club in my neighborhood! Thanks for sharing your book list with us!

    Happy Saturday, everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi Scirish!! Yes, I love those two authors, too. How about Philippa Gregory--I think you would love her books, too.

Shirley, oh! I wish I knew a way to help you! You have to take care of your eyes! I do the same thing, I say I'm just going to read a few pages before bed but end up reading a few chapters! I do notice that if I read before bed, I fall asleep easier.

Have a good day at work, Amicus! What time should I bring the poodles over??

    ReplyDelete
  29. SHIRLEY...thanks for breakfast. I am at the car place and the cookie just didn't hit the spot! I will have a little bit of EVERYTHING you made:) Gotta keep my piggy persona, ya know!

I am confused (it doesn't take much!)...I thought everyone in Canada had health insurance? Is vision coverage not included?

Good morning to all that have landed since my last post ;)

  30. Good morning everyone! Wow, either I am up late or everyone is up early!

    Lynn D: Congrats on #1!

Mo: Congrats on being runner up!

Sandie: Great blog! I would LOVE to be in a book club (esp. now that I can read for fun and not just boring text books)! I also have read a good many of the books from your list. I think Anita Shreve is an excellent writer, but I wish her books ended happy!!!

I too will have to read the other books on your list that I haven't read yet.

Well, I have a LOT of weeds (plural) to pull today and then mow my lawn. That bad thing is that it is hot and humid hear! ICK!

Waving a wing at Tink, Bon'O, EBJ, GM, Scirish, and Amicus

Shirley, Thank you for the yummy breakfast. I would like an omelette, sausage, toast, and hashbrowns please. I'm STARVING!!!

  32. No Maureen dental and eye care are not covered, or prescriptions unless you have insurance which I don't have money for. There is a provincial program in Nova Scotia to cover part of prescription drugs but nothing for glasses or dental.

Good morning to Jennifer, Scirish and Amicus.

  37. Good Morning, Owls!

LynnD There you are, all bright and green, at #1 again! Congrats!

Sandie Great blog! Your love of books really shows.

I, too, used to go to the library every week with my mom and little brother. I used to love the Nancy Drew mysteries and read them all. I read alot as an adult, too, but haven't been reading as much as I used to. I think it's because I'm on the computer more.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Scirish I have access to Walmart but it is about an hour or so away. I don't have a car and with the price of gas I hate to ask anyone to take me.I didn't realize that they had eye exams or glasses at Walmart. Guess I'm not very observant. I will check into it though. Thanks for the imfo! I know I really have to do something. I get headaches and I know it is because of my eyes.

  47. Well All: My son plugged the wrong cord into the modem and that is why I didn't have internet for 3 days. Also, my other son wired it through a computer that shut off during the storm on Thursday and I didn't find that out until I sat down with it today. Long story short, I got the internet back up and running. :)

    lynn d: congrats on first!

Hi: lynnd, maureen, tink, bono, sandie, shirley, ebj, grandma moses, mek, j/l, scirish and amicus. If I missed anyone my apologies.

Great blog sandie! I have always wanted to join a book club. I worked as a manager of a bookstore for 15 years and after that, I worked as a part-time employee at another chain for 5 years. I loved it. I miss it. I love books and understand exactly the feeling you get when entering a library or bookstore, it is like coming home to me.

One year my dad got a bunch of romance novels (two trash bags full). Over the summer of my sophomore/junior years, I read EVERY LAST one of them!

I was always the kid found with a flashlight under the covers. My favorite series was The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. My mom still talks about how fast and furious I read those books.

maureen: Hi five on the silly romance novels!! :) I love them too. They make me feel good.

Well, my daughter wants me to run someplace with her so I will talk to you later.

Hugs to all and a lil Yippee that my internet is back up.

    Hugs ~ Bebbi

  48. Happy Saturday Everyone!!!

Congrats Lynn for # 1 AGAIN!!!

Terrific blog today Sandie. I LOVE reading. Always have. My Grandma who raised me taught me the joy of books! We would walk to the library with her little shoping cart every week and load up on books.

Now I buy them! I love collecting books, always Hardcover!

I have read several of the books you have listed, thanks for sharing your list, gives me more ideas of books to read next.

I have a couple of suggestions for Shirley.

First off, go to the library and check out Books on Tape.

Second, if you are over 40, eyesight changes. If you were able to read just fine a few yrs back, most likely you just need a pair of "Readers". You can get them almost anywhere. Grocery stores, drugstores, bookstores, and they are not expensive. Just try on a few, and see what strength works for you. I now must wear Readers, and my strength is 1.75.

I find the cutest Reader glasses at the car wash of all places! I now have about 25 pair. I try to match my outfits with my Readers!

Tinka~ sure hope your little Tango is feeling better real soon. Did I read right and she had to have 4 molars pulled? Oh my, no wonder she isn't feeling well!! ((Hugs)) to you and and your little dogs too!

SacBarb~ hope the air is better today. Now we have the fog mixed up with the smoke, so it is double ugly outside! But at least it isn't so god-awful HOT! They say a nice off-shore wind is coming in a few days to blow it all to the Central Valley! I hope you don't get it worse by then!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Till later, Peace, Love and Fun for all! DJ & LE

  49. Morning Everyone!!

SANDIE: What a great blog. I have hundreds of books..and I love to read. My parents would have to encourage my sister and I to go out and play when we were kids, cuz we always wanted to stay in with a book instead!

My internet is acting goofy, cutting in and out. The cable company says they are just making improvements. I wish they would stop "improving" already.

Waving Hi to everybody..have a wonderful day! Hope this goes through....

    ReplyDelete
  50. Sandie: I think I would! And have you ever read any of the Tudor historical novels by Jean Plaidy... OMG, they are fabulous!

Bebbi: Me too! I vividly remember reading late one night and my grandmother coming up the stairs. I quickly turned off the reading light and pretended to be asleep. The next day she brought it up to my parents!

My take on it today: Why did she bother with me? Just let me read! LOL!

And I LOVE Narnia too... ever since that same grandmother gave me the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for my birthday in 1967!

DJ: How's the air up there today? Still pretty murky down here...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Bebbi, Donna Jean and Zona! Wow, we really have a nest full of readers!

Whabbear, I have not read those books but they are on my list now! I love historical fiction!

Mo and Bebbi, I enjoy a good Nora Roberts book now and then, too! ;)

  52. I'm back from the car dealership. They raised their price of an oil change...used to be 19.99 and now 28.99. I needed new wiper blades so like a fool told them to do it...$30 bucks! WTF???? and a new air filter...30 bucks for that, too! 95 bucks later........... I prolly could have done the wipers and air filter myself for less then 20. What an asshole for not asking how much, first.

I need a nap and can't fall asleep.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Maureen LOL @ you calling yourself an asshole!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Whabby! I agree, why couldn't they just leave us alone and let us READ! :) I don't read like I used to.

This blog makes me have more things on my list of things to do:

    1: Write down my dreams
2: Call for my darn boobie squeeze
3: Go back over to Barnes & Noble and look into joining that book club. They have a group that meets on Thursdays (or they used to). I am going to have to start going!

Hope everyone is having a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Maureen Sorry. I went away. Didn't know you were talking to me. Waving a wing at you. I'm in a better mood than yesterday but still not great. How are you besides tired?

  57. Mo: I am having a power steering issue. I am scared to see how much it is going to cost! Also, I have a coolant leak somewhere too..sheesh. I hate cars!

I am going to look into this next week and get it fixed but I have just been putting power steering fluid in about twice a week now.

I might just turn in it and trade it for a darn scooter!

  58. Bebbi Put that boobie squeeze at the top of the list. :)

  59. j/l - I loved the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys too. I was a "Big Sister" in Big Brothers/Big Sisters and took my "Little" to the library a lot. I got her hooked on Nancy Drew. :) I agree, about the computer because I always had a book in my hand pre-computer days.

  61. Bebbi and Just_Lin, I loved Nancy Drew, too and when my daughter was old enough to read them, I lovingly presented them to her. She turned up her nose, of course. I practically followed her around with them. LOL She's just not a reader. (Sigh)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Too funnie sandie! I did the same thing with my daughter. No go! I was so happy when BB/BS matched me with a child who loved to read!

My middle son loved Goosebumps and a lot of anime (Dragonball Z and others). He LOVED reading so I was so happy about that.

When he was in 4th or 5th grade, he brought home this book that he got from the library that he LOVED. I was looking at it and realized it was the same book that I LOVED as a child but could never remember the author's name or find it for YEARS and I worked in a bookstore! Now you can find the book again but for a long time you couldn't. It is called Half Magic, by Edward Eager.
That was such a cool thing to find a beloved book from childhood because your own child read it and loved it too!

  63. Was it good for you tina? Congrats on 69!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Poor 'weenie! :(

Sandie: I remember the Jean Plaidy titles now. One was "Murder Most Royal", about Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. The other was "The Sixth Wife" about Catherine Parr. I loved them both!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Sandie and Bebbi My daughter never got into Nancy Drew, either. Maybe it's too dated. She is an avid reader, though. I made it a priority to read to my kids every night before bed when they were little.

Tina How convenient that you dropped in in time for a 69! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  66. Thanks, Whabbear--I know I'll love them. You would love the Philippa Gregory books because they are about the same people! For some reason the history of Queens and Kings of England really interest me.

Just_Lin, I read to my kids every night, too. For some reason it just didn't "take." LOL

  67. I'm finally here........Hello Hooters!

Shirley- I was waiting for the bail money and you were making breakfast and getting weed???

Ok, since I needed to relax I baked TONS of "special" brownies and am sharing.

Great blog Sandi. I love reading, it is my favorite way to spend a day in the winter. In the summer I can't sit still too long enough to do more then get thru a magazine and an occasional book.

Lynn, I was always the kid who got extra credit for all the book reports too! I have one child who probably has read 3 books by choice his whole life and the other reads a book or 2 a week.

Mo- I think you are the nicest 'asshole' I know! Dont be so hard on yourself- not like we all haven't done it and then said, geez I probably could have done that myself.

    ReplyDelete
  68. SANDIE - Great blog!!!

LYNN D - Congrats on first!!

GOLDIE - lol @ nicest asshole I know!!!

I have always been a bookworm. I think my favorite series that I have ever read is the Harry Potter books. I luv, luv, luv them!!! Some other authors that I enjoy are John Grisham, Mitch Albom, Nicolas Sparks, and Michael Perry (a writer from a very small town in Wisconsin). My brother introduced me to his books....they show how quirky life is in a small town, and I can totally relate!!! I think my favorite book is "Truck....A Love Story"....if that gives you any idea!!!

Just enjoying some quiet time....my daughter went away for the weekend with a classmate and her family, and MR. JODI and the boys are at a horse show today.

  69. My kids joke about all the books they had growing up! I can say I read a lot to them and only had one who read a lot of fiction. My oldest LOVED books on science and STUFF, but wouldn't touch a sci-fi or non-fiction book. My youngest doesn't like to read but has picked it up some. I think she was a little dyslexic and we didn't realize it until she got older. She made it through though and is a Dean's Scholar at the university she attends now! :)

    ReplyDelete
  70. When I realized my youngest had problems, I would read her assignments to her so she could do the work. I read several whole books and a LOT of social science and history. After a while, we would take turns reading but I would go hoarse reading it to her so she could do her reports and stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Sorry Goldie about the bail money. I sort of spent it on gas going to Tina's. I had to go twice. She had more weed...I mean weeds than I thought she did. Lol! How did the moving stuff go? I assume Mr. Goldie is still with us!?! Lol!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Sandie my sister liked your book list. She had already read some of the books but she named off a few that she said she would like to read. Thanks again for a great blog topic!

    ReplyDelete
  73. bebbi- great job mom!

Jodi- I will have to check out that author, I have not heard of him. I KNOW I could relate...;0
Hope you are enjoying your down time. We all need it.
We were invited to go see a band at the Memorial Union then see fireworks (HELL NO - I am not going to go to Warner Park for Rhythym & Booms) but we have been gone so much we declined and are just going to chill at home.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Shirley- I think I need to go to tina's house :)

Mr. Goldie and the son are still with us. It didn't look good early, but it all worked out in the end. It was a LONG day though. Our 3 hour drive there took 4 hours (thank you Illinois toll system!) and 4 hours back. OY

    ReplyDelete
  75. Goldie sounds like you need a brownie and a couple Jello shots! Relax and take it easy.

    ReplyDelete
  76. goldie: thanks!

Also, I meant to say my oldest wouldn't touch a sci-fi or FICTION book. He loves non-fiction. Sheesh. I need writing lessons. :)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Ohh..goldie long drives can be soooooooooooooooooo rough! Glad you made it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. I have my young friend Luke here this weekend, and we have had a very busy day so I haven't had much time on the blog or MS today. Just flying in quickly to say HidyhoHO's!

Sandie...excellent blog. It is very cool that you come away from your book club with so much more than a good discussion about an interesting book (which is fantastic in itself!). It sounds like wonderful friendships have been formed there. That is wonderful! Thanks for a great book list...I now have my summer reading all set and ready to go. Fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Hey Owls!

I am home and let me just say I have not moved in 3 hours. It is a little warm here today. Just pushing my hair back out of my face and I am breaking out in a sweat!

The mushroom festival was interesting good food but a little short on information! Mr. Lynn D was disappointed. Of course we walked away thinking of all the ways they could improve it!

No Shirley no funny shrooms at this event! I think they save those for the Hemp festival in Seattle! LOL

Scrishy I read Rick Bragg's It's all over but the shouting. I thought about that book for days after I read it. He was so honest about his life!

Weenie: I think the car dealership is the Asshole! $30.00 for wiper blades??? WTF Do they resurface the windshield at the same time?

I love any book written by Fannie Flagg. Read her latest a couple of months ago Can't Wait to Get to Heaven! Fantastic book and really makes you take a pause and think about the after life.

Right now I am reading the latest Patricia Cornwell book. I have to say I usually love her books but I have noticed the last few that the characters seem to be going down some very dark paths and I am not so sure I am into it.

I also read the Nora Roberts series with Eve Dallas. Great imagination as to what the future may be.

I love series books. I have to hunt them down and read all of them!

If anyone out there loves quirky mysteries or detective series. Check out author P.J. Tracy and the Monkeewrench books. A mother and daughter write them and I love the characters and story lines!

    Goldie glad your home sweetie!

Ok I am going to go puddle by the fan.

  80. Help!!!! Has anyone tried the Myspace Profile Editor? I have and I don't like it and now I can't get rid of it. My profile has a split personality...the profile I want and the one from Myspace are showing up at the same time. Has anyone figured out how to get rid of this useless Myspace tool once it is embedded into the profile?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Hi Lynn-D...glad the Shroom Festival was interesting! I saw the new Fannie Flagg book last night at the book store and hummed and hawed as to whether I should buy it...I didn't...so based on your recommendation, I will be heading back to the bookstore to get it! Thanks for a good beach book suggestion!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Goldie, glad you made it through a rough day!

Shirley, I'm so glad your sister liked the list. The list is actually huge so I didn't post the whole thing. If anyone wants more titles, just ask!

Thanks for the nice comments, VIG. Have fun reading!

Lynn D, I love Fannie Flagg and have read all of her books. I so wish she would write more.

  83. Sandie~Just popping in to say "Thanks Again!" for an excellent blog/booklist and to all for adding even more suggestions for summer reading.

I refuse to whine (yet) about the weather....but let's just say I'm SO happy it has plummeted all the way down to 92* at 7pm!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Amicus or any other myspace techie. Please help.

I added pictures to my slideshow on myspace. It worked fine.
Then I must have clicked some button because the new slides made a slideshow by themselves and posted two more times. Now I have 2 of the same slideshows and a third one with all the slides on it. I thought I knew what I was doing but obviously I didn't.

  85. Flying my sweaty cranky ass through again!

Zona and MEK: I don't think I could live in AZ the weather we have today is making me so cranky! If I lived in 113 degrees I might turn into a serial killer or sumpthin!

Vig get the book you will enjoy it! Happy summer reading!

Bon my porch thermometer says 88 but it is in the shade. The dogs are looking at me like it is all my fault! LOL

Back to my fan. I would go naked but it scares the pigeons outside my window! Hey wait maybe that will work and they will finally leave! Off to experiment!

  86. Lynn d:
    Congrats on First!

    Sandie:
Thank you so much for your blog today, I enjoy reading and have read some of the books on your list...
I love love, any book from Phillippa Gregory!

I do have a confession tho, I have not been reading as much as I would like lately. Its seems blogging has taken up the time when I used to read...

I made a promise to myself, last week, I am going to start reading again. So if I am missing from the nest some nights you will know I am reading...As I miss it so much!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Sandie - I am sorry I haven't been contributing to your book discussion. A few years ago I would have been very excited about it. Right now the sight in my left eye is very poor. I can see to drive and read the computer but when I try to read a book it blurs. My spirit is with you however. It's been a great blog.

    ReplyDelete
  88. If I can't read at least I can count.

    ReplyDelete
  89. lynn d: Have you ever read Janet Evanovich? She is an awesome quirky mystery writer...laugh out loud funny! I love Fanny Flagg too. I love any book that makes me laugh like that. :)

    ReplyDelete
  90. Hi Want.

Sandi- I copied your book list too. You inspired me to read tonight. I bought the book "The Last Lecture" a good month ago,but just didn't sit down with it. I have read 1/2 so far tonight and I am sure I will finish it before bed.

bebbi- I like Janet Evanovich too, and Debbie Macomber.

Lynn, sorry about your sweaty ass. I used to adore Patricia Cromwell too, but feel the same way. Not so into her characters anymore. I don't like to go to far over into the dark side if you know what I mean.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Tinka Good job on the march!

Bebbi I've read all the Stephanie Plum stories. Too funny!

    ReplyDelete
  92. I previously LOVED Patricia Cornwell. I couldn't wait until her new books would come out. I was at the bookstore for all the release dates, but, after about her 6th or 7th book, everything went downhill. And, they keep getting worse.

You're right LynnD, they are getting dark and creepy and aren't well written.

I enjoy Sue Grafton's alphabet series. They are fun.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I said "Good Night" and then my message flew into cyberspace.
Good Night and God Bless. See you all tomorrow. I will figure out my slideshow problem with someone's help, right Amicus????
    Love to all, Tinka

    ReplyDelete
  94. Cornwell, not Cromwell. Geez, I had too many of those brownies and jello shots......

  96. As usual, the people in the town I live in have started doing fireworks. In Wisconsin, we seem to think fireworks should be started well before the 4th of July.

    ReplyDelete
  97. They are showing the first ever Saturday Night Live with George Carlin hosting....

    ReplyDelete
  98. We had some around here tonight too Want. We actually were supposed to have out little town fireworks and concert tonight. They postponed because of the rain two days ago, and guess what, it was a beautiful night. Watch it rain tomorrow when they rescheduled! lol!

One year we had our little fireworks show and every single one was a dud! They went up with that little flash of light and then no burst! Over and over again it happened. When people were heading home with their kids and lawn chairs it was the most eerily silent and forlorn group. It makes me laugh now, but it was a somber deal then! The fireworks company who provided the duds did make up for it at a later time.

  99. want:
I am watching that right now!
