Suddenly, Life can Change

Suddenly, Life can Change

by East Bay J

I got home a while ago from a service at a funeral home. A co-worker died suddenly last week.

When I got to work Thursday morning, my boss came to me and asked me if I knew Cindy. I said yes, I've known her for years.

My boss told me that Cindy died the night before, she had cardiac arrest. She apparently had surgery and had some post-op complications. And now she's dead.

I was stunned, and spent the day thinking of her and the last time I saw her. It had been about a month ago. I was taking a patient in a wheelchair over to the hospital, to the Emergency Dept. As we got close, I saw Cindy and in the hallway.

It turned out that the patient I was taking to the ED was Cindy's aunt. So we gabbed for a few minutes. She told me that she had just been down to Phoenix and had seen a mutual friend, a former co-worker who had moved.

I met Cindy about 9 years ago, when we worked together at another clinic. We both transferred to the new clinic when it opened a few years ago, and recently she had moved to a different department in the next building.

She was 49, a wife and mother of a 16 year old son. She used to come to work years ago and tell us that her son liked to dress up in girls clothes, put on make-up, playing with dolls, and she wondered if it was just a phase.

I went into the funeral home today and saw lots of familiar faces. I slowly went up front. I looked at the casket, I could see her face, and my stomach started to churn. I went to the side of the room and looked at pictures that were placed on poster boards. One jumped out at me, it was from a cruise she had taken in April, less than 2 months ago.

I went to the casket and looked. I barely recognized her, the make-up was so thick and I would never have known it was her. One thing I noticed, and I'm not sure why, was that she had a French manicure.

I looked over to the side, where her family was seated. I saw her son and her husband. I started to wonder how her son would do. He is gay. Her husband is not accepting. How will he manage without his mother? Cindy was very supportive of him, she even helped him dress up and put on nail polish.

My friend Dan called me this morning, he and Cindy were close, and Dan is worried about her son.

Life is so unfair at times.

  3. Oh, Judy my heart goes out to her son.

He is at a time in his life where he needs a supportive parent.

I hope that his mother's love and strength will guide him into adulthood.

  4. Morning Glories!

Bon Got First!!! Loved your poem from yesterday!

EBJ: I am so sorry for your loss.

I have to say that my Dad used to tell me all the time when I was growing up "Fair"? "Who said life was fair?"

It used to make me so mad! But he was so right. You make do with what you have and stay the course. It is very hard.

Cindy has had all these years to raise her son and he has the knowledge that his mother supported and loved him unconditionally. I pray that this will help him stay his course.

They only thing her friends can do is to let her son know that you accept who he is and support him in any capacity you can.

That little bit of kindness can help a person through the toughest times. It helped me through much turmoil in my life.

    (((Hugs))) for a beautiful blog!

  7. Me, too, Judy. I hope this brings her son and his father a little closer together.

I would have been devastated to have lost my Mom as a teenager. We're such fragile things, we humans.

  8. Good morning, iteach, bon'O, and lynn D!

Jennifer: from A51: I fervently wish that you can work through the pain and eventually find happiness with someone. Don't give up hope!

  9. Jennifer I second what Whabby said!

Carol: I will try to find my graduation photo. Mr. Lynn D has a copy he has carried in his wallet for years. But it is faded and wrinkled. It looks more like me now. LOL I will search to see if I have more.

  11. Good morning bon'o, whabbear, iteach, and lynnd!!
East Bay J, your post is so sad. I hope everything will turn out all right. My heart goes out to her son. I was also 16 when my mom died in 1970. It definitely made me closer to my younger sister and older brother till this day. I am so lucky to have them. We are survivors by nature. My prayer is that his dad will find a tender heart toward his son.

Jennifer, you are allowing your exes (husband and friend) to ruin your life. Start saying all the wonderful things about yourself. I am sure there are many. I also wish you happiness, whether you find that special person or not. Spend time with friends and family that love you. Be kind to yourself. Please

Hang in there, it will get easier, the hurt won't go away, but time will help you get thru it...

Just know you are doing the right thing, it is still your daughters Father, so you must let her go (if she wants to go). When she gets older she will see, and then she can make her own decision's....

    Sending Smiles your way

Very sorry for the loss of your friend. Thank you for sharing, I hope it helped that you were able to write it out. I have seen some families fall apart when the Matriarch passes on. However on the flip side I have seen families grow closer. I hope this family can find what they need to stay supportive...

Again, thanks for sharing, and thinking of sending it me.

  17. Ok, I am off to start my day...

  18. When are senior pictures due by?

    1. Mine is really ugly and doesn't look like me.

    2. I think I burned all my copies, but I think my mom might have one.

    3. Even my husband thinks it is not my best picture.

    4. My hair was totally weird.

Promise no judging, if I figure out how to scan it.

    Pinky Swear!

  19. Good morning!

Congrats Bono for being first. Your poem was lovely.

This morning I will be going to the funeral for Cindy. I don't want to go but...

I too hope that her son and husband will become closer. I don't know either one of them really, so don't know what I can do.

Jennifer I just went to area 51 and read your post. I feel for you. I do have an ex-husband, but no kids. I can only imagine how hard it is for you to let Katie go to him.

I am proud of you that you keep your chin up and let her go, you sound like a wonderful mom and Katie is lucky to have you.

Do you ever watch Judge Judy? She seems to get lots of couples and almost always, one parent will prevent the child from visiting the other, bad mouth the other, etc

She always says that the child deserves to be loved by as many people as possible, even the "enemy" parent, and has the right to see that parent.

I don't always agree with that, but I guess as long as they don't do anything to harm her, or say anything negative about you, then it is the right thing to do.

Don't give up on love, it finds you when you least expect it. My first husband looked exactly like Nick Nolte (the young and hot version) and it's too long a story to post, but that was a tough divorce.

I vowed to never get seriously involved or marry again, just to protect my heart. But... fast forward and now I'm happily married to a great guy.

Be back later, have a great day!

  20. Good morning Hooters! Congrats bon bon on #1, and I loved your poem.

Whabby, I agree- Hooters is not my cup of tea either :)

EBJ- so sorry for your loss. I hope that young man has a support system and that his father will will learn to accept. I can not imagine how a parent does NOT accept their child for who they are.

I lost a close friend a few years ago to brain cancer. She was 40 years old and the mother of 3 girls. The hardest thing I ever had to do was look into that casket and see a women that was not "my" Wendi. I always marvel when people say things like "didn't Ethel look good?" at a funeral. Who looks good dead??? JMHO- Needless to say, there will be no viewing of this old dog when she goes...

Hope you all have a good day.

  22. Good morning Everyone!

EBJ: What a heartbreaking situation. I hope that when David's father looks at his son now, he will see his wife in their boy's eyes, or smile..and know that all that matters is that this is their son...and that he loves him, his mother loves him...and that he needs to let the love he feels guide his actions. Nothing else.

I am so sorry for their loss and for you, losing your friend.

    ReplyDelete
  23. BON'O: Congrats on FIRST!

LYNND: I understand that life is unfair..but still ask the same question I did when I was 8..."Why?"

JENNIFER: I wish you weren't hurting so badly. You are a sweet and wonderful person, there is someone out there just for you. Don't give up.

ITEACH: Just do it!! SCAN! LOL

GOLDIE: My mom always said, "No one is looking at me unless I can look back!" I feel the same way.

Congrats on the first march and 25!

WHABBEAR: Loved what you wrote in Area 51!!

HI CPGEM!! Have a wonderful day!

    HI GRANDMA MOSES!

Ok..may be pushing my luck, as my internet has been on and off at whim for two days..and will continue that way for 2 more weeks. Cable company upgrades? Pain in the butt, I say.

  29. Good Morning all my loving owls. I am so sorry for your loss EBJ. We all know life is unpredictable but when it hits us personally it is like we are learning it for the first time. My prayers are for her son to be able to make it without her and the father to become more understanding.

I am rushing to the Vet's for an early morning check-up on Tango. I will be back to comment later.

  30. Good Morning Owls!

EBJ: I too am sorry for your loss. Cindy was only 4 years older than I am. How sad! {{Hugs}} for you and prayers for the healing of her son and husband's hearts and their relationship.

Linda in Squamish asked me to say Hello to everyone for her. Life is keeping her busy right now, but she said she misses us.

A few weeks ago, I posted Andrew Johnston's audition video for Britain's Got Talent. He's the 13 year old who was being bullied at school because of the type of music he loves to sing. He performed Pie Jesu, and at that time, I said I wished I could hear him perform the whole song. I got my wish! Even Simon gave him a standing ovation. Here's a video from the show's finale:

    Andrew Johnston - Pie Jesu

Unfortunately, he didn't win the competition. :( He came in third.

A young boy who did a dance routine to Singin' in the Rain won the competition. Here's that video if you want to watch him too:

    George Sampson - Dance Routine

First time I've ever seen Simon Cowell in a suit and tie. :)

    Have a great day, Owls!

  31. Thanks, Zona and Carol! The wedding plans are in full swing!

MEK and Sleep: Thanks for noticing my fly-by last night! LOL! It was short and sweet because I spent way too much time in chat!

Tink, did we hear from you yesterday on the blog topic? I would think you'd have an interesting perspective!

  32. Good morning and happy Hump Day Owls.

EBJ: I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. I, pray that her husband will come to accept their son for the person he is with an unconditional love. You wrote a very touching blog.

Bon'O": Congrats on being the early bird today. I read you poem again and I also think you should share the rest of it.

Jennifer: My heart hurts for you. I watched my DIL have the same feelings when she had to let her daughter go to he ex's. Her situation was very similar to yours. She and my son married when her daughter was 12 and her daughter is now 20. Your daughter will appreciate the sacrifice you made in letting her continue her relationship with her Dad.

You are a kind and loving person and when you least expect it, you will meet someone who will want to share your life with you.

    G'ma Moses: Congrats on QOTD

Bear: LOL @ Hooters not your cup of tea. Now, Chippendales....

Goldie: Happy 25th Anniversary to you and Mr. Goldie.

Waving a wing at Iteach, LynnD, Carol, Zona, MEK, and all who land after me.

  43. So where do we leave the guesses for the HS pics?

    Morning Hooters!!

    TinKa: Let us know k?

LynnD: I feel for that young man, and like others I hope that the father can come to terms and learn to love his son for who he is not "what" he is. Being gay myself and having a father that never accepted my sexuality I kinda think I know how he feels. I wish him well, and maybe if a few peeps step in and surround him with the type of love his mother showed him it may help him thru his grief.

    Be back later....

  47. K-Girl: I emailed my guess to Carol. I'm not sure if that's what we're supposed to do though. :)

I'm hoping I can scan my senior pic, but I don't know if my old scanner will work with my new computer. I'll give it try this weekend when I have time to play around with it.

    Fun idea, BarbWA! :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Carol: Woo Hoo, cookies from Whoopie. And you get to make travel plans for her too? She said she doesn't fly, and she has a big ole bus that she takes everywhere. So do you just make the hotel reservations? I am star struck!

  50. Speaking of Whoopi, she's hosting the Tony Awards this year on Sunday, June 15th, 8:00-11:00pm (ET/PT time delay).

The cast of Lion King will be performing Circle of Life, and the original cast of Rent will be joining the current cast for a special performance. The nominated musicals will also be doing performances.

I'm looking forward to it! :)

    Will you be taking pictures?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Bear - That's all right. There are just as many happy memories to balance the bad.

I am home from the Vet and had my nap and I feel like I am out of the loop. I will have to splash come cold water on my face.

I am sure that is a picture of my Baby Zona. If it isn't, it's her twin because I remember her looking just like that back when she was a teenager.

I am off to another Band concert. Last night it was the Jazz band. Tonight is the concert band and choir. Should be fun. It's amazing the quality of High School musical productions these days.

Tango's foot seems to be getting better so we will carry on as before, letting her walk a little and riding in her stroller a lot, at least for a few more weeks. She loves her stroller. She had her thyroid tested again today and both got their Kennel Cough shots. I spend more money on them than I do on myself it seems but they are worth it.

  71. EBJ~~Thank you for sharing your friend Cindy with us, and my best to her son. I hope he has a strong support network to see him through. I'm glad you included the comment about her recent cruise. Sounds like she LIVED the too-brief life she was given.

I've been trying over the past few hours to send individual 'thank yous' to those of you who responded kindly to my poem excerpt from Area 51, but 'Tom' is not being very cooperative today. I felt a bit 'nekkid' , especially since it was just a part of a much longer whole. To those who asked for the entire poem, I wouldn't hog the blog with it, but might get brave enough one day to post it to an MS blog. I know we have some poets/writers here whose work I'd love to read. I'll show you mine if you........etc.

I, too, had emailed my "Who's That Owl" vote to Carol earlier today. It's unanimous!!

  85. My second toe is smaller than my big toe, and I were two toe rings, one on each second toe...

Oh, and I have a tattoo on my ankle

Are we not talking about ankles now only toes?

Well, than I would say I am a rebel!

    ReplyDelete
  86. iteach, My second toe are shorter than my big toes. My husbands second toes are longer than his big toes. He says it is a sign of nobility!! LOL He says I have peasant toes. But my toes are cuter than his toes! Sometimes it is fun to be tedious!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Carol, what a rebel you are! I will not say one thing about my ankles.

    ReplyDelete
  88. cpgem - you say tedious like it's a bad thing!! LOL

    I have my father's feet -

I own several toe rings - but no matter HOW tight I try to squeeze them on - they slip around and the top part is underneath - making it extremely uncomfortable to walk!!

    :-)

  89. Today's blog has made me think about things that I keep putting off...

Does everyone have all their ducks in a row? In case, we do have an untimely death.....

    Do you have a will?

Will you be buried or cremated?

Do you know where you will be buried?

I have NONE of the above figured out..

I always thought I would be buried in Colorado springs - BUT, I don't live there anymore - and I would be totatlly alone..

Mr. MEK wants to be cremated and spread all around in different places........

I sure as heck don't want to end up in this desert -

SO - I better get my "business in order".........

    just got me thinking..

    ReplyDelete
  90. I guess I should have written a blog about that -

    ReplyDelete
  91. cpgem - did the tat on your ankle hurt??!!

    ReplyDelete
  92. Mek:
My parents have everything in order, as we discussed it in detail. So they are all set up! When the time comes I know exactly what they want, and its in their will as well. There will be not questions when the time comes.

    Me..Nada..Niente...Nothing!

I probably should start soon on me tho!

And, no the tat did not hurt, not that I remember anyway!

  93. Ok I am caving to peer pressure here.

My second toe is slightly longer than my big toe. I guess this explains why I trip all the damn time and as I peer at all my piggy's I am really thinking I need a fresh pedicure!

Also when I walk bare foot my toes all spread apart! It has been like this since I was a kid and my Dad would just crack up! He kept calling me duck foot!

Never tried a toe ring I think it would drive me crazy!

However my last pedicure they put rhinestones on my nails. LOL Does that count as bling?

  94. MEK: I have nothing in writing. I just keep putting it off! Don't know why??

I am an organ donor and that is on my license and Mr. Lynn D knows to cremate me and scatter me at the ocean. I told him to go as cheap as he can! LMAO

Now that I think about it he may just marinate me in rum and burn me in the back acreage! ROFLMAO

I guess I better put something in writing.

    ReplyDelete
  95. MEK: We have everything in order and also have pages designating who gets what..whether they want it or not. ;)

    ITEACH: Ok..second slightly longer...sheesh! ;)

  96. MEK- We have a will. I love my stepdaughter very much, but her mother is very money hungry.

Ever so often she calls and wants to talk to hubby about his will.

She then wants to talk about his life insurance policy.

So we went to a lawyer to make sure every child receives equal amounts.

  97. We both are going to be buried in the cementary that is right down the road.

  103. EBJ~ I'm soooo sorry about your friend.....I truly hope her son grows close to his dad~

bono~ congrats on 1st and please share the whole poem....it was beautiful~

    I can't believe we are discussing toes~

Jennifer~ Your post broke my heart~ It takes a big person to allow their child to see the other parent and not bad mouth them. When she is older, she will see her dad thru the eyes of an adult and see what you have done for her~ Don't close the door to new love. It happens when you least expect it~

  106. MEK, people at work were talking about that very thing today. Most do not have their affairs in order.

I think losing our friend / co-worker has made an impact, and many people (myself included) need to get that taken care of. We are not invincible and things can happen suddenly.

I do not know what happened with Cindy, I am so curious tho. I know she had gastric bypass surgery years ago (before I met her). She had no problems from it that I know of, although she did gain all the weight back.

She went on a cruise less than 2 months ago and looked good the last time I saw her. So I will try to find out what happened.

I will send her husband and son a card and ask if there is anything I can do. I hope her son Jordan will be ok, he will really need his dads support.

Goldie I'm with you, I will not want to be layed out open for people to look at. I had bad dreams last night because she looked so bad. I wish I hadn't looked at her. When my stomach started becoming upset I should have known.

Carol, when are you gonna tell us who the mystery picture is?

I don't have my high school grad pic, but I asked my dad to find it and scan it for me. So hopefully I will send it one of these days!

Why was I not invited to the funeral services, I could have sang a song?

    ReplyDelete
  109. Lynn D:
LOL...yes to me that counts as bling!

    ReplyDelete
  110. MEK- Mr. Iteach wasn't even married to her and they never lived together.

She tried to take me to court, so that she could have a chunk of my teacher salary.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Carol, what would you have sang?

My favorite funeral song is "Let there be Peace on Earth".

  117. MEK: I did my will very soon after my Hubby died because neither of us had one and I didn't want my kids to have to go through what I did. I also made all my final arrangements and it is all paid for. About 2 years after that I did a living trust which was more detailed than the will. Also, it will be much easier for the kids and they won't have to go through probate court.

Iteach: OK, I checked and my second toes are slightly longer than my big toe for whatever that's worth.

    LynnD: Rhinestones are definitely **BLING**

  118. Oh my, Eunice is really really really dead? I feel so bad. Well I guess we need to put her to rest...

  120. Barb I want to do the same thing, but hubby says wait.

It was such a mess after my boyfriend died that I also don't want anyone else having to worry about burial arrangements.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Next thing you know - we'll be submitting pics of our toes and have people guess who's are who's!

SacBarb - glad to hear you are ready!!

My mom's all ready and everything is paid for - so will be a big relief for us kids!!

  124. I jumped into the middle of some very serious conversations. Sorry for the interruptions. I just got home from my grandson's second band concert in two nights. I did something I always criticize others for and that was to leave the concert when my boy was finished. I really do have a good excuse with my aching back but I felt badly doing it.
    Back to regular programming.

  129. (part 1)
Tina~~Thank you. Carol asked if I would post it as a NestBlog. Told her that was a bit too reminiscent of another blog for me.."Didja read it? Huh, BlogBuddies, didja? Didja?" but I will try to muster the courage to post it on MS. Keep in mind, though, I was 'channeling' the sappy, romantic early-20 something girl I once was...from the perspective of an almost 40 year-old at the time!
