July 4th!!

"The Star Spangled Banner" sung by Whitney Houston, Bellagio Fountain Show in Las Vegas

Happy 4th of July!

today is our independence day, it is a day where
we celebrate America's independence!

on July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence
from Britain and Democracy was born.

as a little girl, my family always celebrated
this day with a family bbq, my mom comes from a
family of 12, and every year we would all get together
at my Uncle Pat's house, he had a pool, so we all
swam like fishes, and ate like pigs (sorry mo)

he had a plastic statue of liberty, so when you arrived
at his house lady liberty was there to great you, and
each one of us got a flag, and a box of sparkler's

my uncle and cousins would always go into NYC to
buy the fireworks off the streets, as its illegal to
sell fireworks here in NJ and NY, so at dusk the
elders would lite the fireworks one by one, and the
show would begin!

i remember standing back, as the entertainment
began and watched in amazement as they went up in
the sky and wonderful colors emerged!!

one year my middle nephew just happen to be in
the way, and a flash of light came flying down and
hit him on the leg, i will never forget the look of
horror my sisters face, as my nephew hopped up and
down, he was fine, just a small burn, which left no
scar, however from that incident, each year we would be
pushed farther back from the shooting of the fireworks

when my uncle passed away, the tradition
faded, however the memories i have from this time are
with me forever, and more so in my heart

i have always wondered if others have these same
cherished memories, of a day we American's declared
our Independence, a day we are now grateful for!

America! Happy Independence!

  4. Morning Glories!

    Happy Fourth of July!

I remember being about 5 and we lived in Seattle. My parents and Aunts and Uncles would take all of us to Greenlake for the displays we would curl up on blankets and watch the big fireworks.

There were always picnics and lots of food. As we got older the adults would let us light fireworks and every year it seemed one of us would end up with a burn on our hands.

Now I think were they crazy??

When my kids were little we would go to family gatherings and they were only allowed to do the sparklers. Well that was until one of my cousins daughters got an awful burn from one and then that was it! They only got Pop its and smoke snakes after that. Mr. Lynn D would do the snakes with them. Call me over protective but hey they still have all of their fingers and toes to this day!

Today we will go to a friends for a bbq and be home early and will watch the displays on TV.

I hope all of you have a very safe but fun 4th!

  5. Congrats on first, Lynn!

Happy 4th of July, Lynn and Birdee and everyone stopping in later!!

I hope you're having a good time at the beach, Carol. Thanks for the blog!

My Mom's side of the family has a big family picnic every Thanksgiving and every July 4th. I have great memories of them, too! My parents and aunts, uncles and cousins would play a big game of baseball. I still remember my Dad (who had the nickname of "Crazy Legs") running the bases and being silly and making everyone laugh.

These days the baseball game is no more but we still get together to eat. I'm not there this year :( but my thoughts will be with them today.

    Have a wonderful day!!

CAROL...great blog! Maybe now you are starting a new fa,ily tradition with your trip to the shore. I hope you are having a blast.

My family gatherings always seem to fall on a day other then the 4th. This year it is going to be on Sunday!

  7. When I was a little girl...ok, a young girl (never too little!) my mom, dad, brother and I would usually go to the beach in the day and then at night, we would go to Kiddie Land and watch the fireworks. I remember them being the most outstanding displays I have ever seen. We would sit on the car with thousands of other cars and watch in awe. You could hear thunderous OHHHS and AHHHS. One year someone got hurt when one hit a little girl, so we didn't go back the next year and then my father passed away and we moved away. SO the tradition ended. But I still can see the displays in my head...or maybe they are in my heart. I never went to fireworks again until I was old enough to go with friends.

I think I will pass on them this year and watch them on tv. Less mosquitos!!!!

  8. Happy 4th to One and All-

Good Morning Lynn ( First on the Fourth), you must be proud.

Good Morning Birdee my dear friend, and also to my other wonderful friends Maureen and Sandie. Great to see you.

  9. I loved your blog Carol. We in Canada seem to celebrate with you in the States because there is so much coverage on T.V. I get excited to see the fireworks and go from channel to channel. Americans really know how to put on a show. I remember when Whitney sang the anthem. She looked so young and bright. I will listen to it now.

  12. ***Happy 4th of July***

Congrats Lynn on first, Birdee on 2nd, and Sandie on 3rd. Who's on 1st, what's on second? And Good Morning Mo, who's always 'pitchin'.

Loving your blog, Carol and hoping you have a wonderful time at the shore with all your family.

Growing up, the 4th of July was really a big celebration day. All my Aunts and Uncles and cousins came over for bar-b-que and we always made homade ice cream. My daddy would crank the freezer, while us kids took turns sitting on 'gunny sacks' on top of it.

In the early evening we had fireworks on our driveway and the only thing that shot into the air were Roman Candles...but so beautiful. We all played with sparklers and ate watermelon. I guess you would say, it was a traditional American celebration.

This year, as always, Houston is going all out with the fireworks display. They are expecting over a million people to be downtown and watch them being shot off of the tops 15 different buildings. Lots of bands will be playing, and like Mo said, lots of mosquiots. The smell of gunpowder and Off Repellant will be in full force. I'm staying home this year and watching all the activities on television.

Loving my country and so proud to be an American!!!

((hugs)) to all and stay safe while we celebrate.

    Ronnie

  17. Good Morning Bebbi, Ronnie and Shirley. Hope you have fun today.

I have only one memory of celebrating the 4th. It was in Cincinnati in 1996. As I mentioned yesterday they make fireworks in Cincy and put on a fantastic display on the Ohio River. We were invited to be on one of Ron's friend's boat on the Ohio River for a very festive party. The highlight of course was having such a beautiful view of the fireworks display. I had never seen anything like it. It's a memory I will treasure.

  21. HAPPY 4TH OF JULY EVERYONE!!!

I'm off to go camping with our son and his girlfriend. Had di disappoint the daughter though. She had it all lined up to go down to the fort like we did last year and hang out at my office bbq'n and people watching before the big fireworks display. I gave her a parking pass and told her to still go down, or they can drive out to where we are camping for bbq since it's only an hour away. We'll see what she decides.
I will have wifi access, but I have to walk to fron of the grounds to get it, so I won't be on all the time. I will check in though to see how everyone is doing!

    HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE!

  22. Happy fourth of July American Owls! May it be as special as you all are! I hope today is filled with tradition and fun!

Because American Maureen sang the Canadian anthem so kindly on Canada Day, it is this Canadian Vig's turn to sing the beautiful American anthem for you:

O! say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

  23. Good Morning Barbara in Wa and VIG.

VIG - I love your new page and I think your rendition of the anthem is prettier than Whitney's.

    Barbara - Have fun camping.

Off to have breakfast and watch Regis. I am sure it's a re-run but I will put it on anyway. Have a safe day everyone.

  24. ***BRAVO, BRAVE*** Vig!!

Beautiful voice and Thank You so very much. It kind of makes me think, not only of my country, but of major league baseball games, because we always stand and sing our anthem before the game starts.

    Thanks again, Vig.

Off to 'shuck' some corn for dinner.

  25. Ronnie...I know what you mean. When I hear the Canadian anthem first it makes me cry and then I want to cheer for the hockey game to begin. My cheering isn't usually appreciated at a serious ceremony!!!

  30. One 4th of July, we were in our backyard in Colorado setting off pop-bottle rockets, we had sparklers, and some other fun firecrackers. I was in elementary school.

our backyard neighbors had pop-bottle rockets also and somehow - their dad and son and my dad and brother started aiming them at each other - it was all in fun - but as one of our rockets was inching up it's fuse, the sparks set off ALL of the bottle rockets that were on the ground "waiting" to be shot -

SO - we had bottle rockets flying EVERYWHERE - dive bombing our heads, our bodies - it was quite dangerous - and funny all at the same time - my mom was yelling at my dad and everyone else was laughing, screaming, and running all around.....

Those were the days!!! We would have hamburgers and hotdogs, mom would make potato salad, macaroni salad and deviled eggs!! YUMMY!!!

Firecrackers are illegal, but kids were setting them off last night!!

Everyone - be safe!! I'm off to enjoy the day!!!
    :-)

  32. Did anyone watch the NBC morning news show today? In the second hour they had a piece called "Independence Day From the Other Side". It was shot right here in my town, Shelburne, on the waterfront. It's kind of cool to see your town on the news.

  35. HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!!

How appropriate that this will be my fourth try at posting!! Blogger isn't liking me today.

We always had backyard bar-b-ques around the pool when I was a kid. I don't really remember actually staying outside though..it was more like make the food and run into the air conditioned house!

I remember one year when I was 13 and my sister was 8, my folks went to a party and trusted me to watch her. Well, we decided it would be neat to go up on the roof and watch for the fireworks over at the Community College. I got out the ladder, grabbed a blanket and up we went. We layed on the roof and watched what little of the show we could see. We decided to come down at about 10pm. I went down the ladder, and my sister stayed put. She was terrified..wouldn't come off the roof. I begged, pleaded, bribed..she would not climb down the ladder. I could just see my folks coming home..and me being in all kinds of trouble for leaving my little sister on the roof! I never offered to do so many chores, give up so many allowances, be NICE for so long..as I did that night with her. After almost 2 hours..she finally inched down the ladder. Thank God!! When my parents came home a couple hours later, my sister ran right up to them and told them EVERYTHING. I was grounded for..well it was supposed to be forever..but I think it ended up being a month.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Zona~ That reminded when I had to take my little sister to the circus. I was thrilled by a teen aerialist. All was fine until she spotted the clown! She cried so loud I had to leave. I dragged her poor little body all the way home.MomMom was not happy. I still feel bad about it though. She now says she doesn't remember it at all.

Thought I had better change my avatar to something more American than the Eiffel Tower LOL!
It is a picture of my 7th year installation as Treas. of our VFW Aux. Post.

Zona, I hope the poodles will be okay tonight, too. You probably remember the last time they heard fireworks I couldn't get Luc to go outside for many hours!! They are giant babies! I'm sure Nikki is not as wimpy as they are.

VIG, thank you for singing to us--especially as hard as our anthem is to sing.

Mary/mi, I wanted to tell you that my Dad has taken eye drops for over 30 years for glaucoma. He is doing well. Just make sure you take them and follow the doctor's directions because it's really important to keep that pressure down. He has had to change the kind/amount, etc. of drops over the years but his sight is still really good. Don't worry!

  40. Thanks Sandi~ I have to admit I was a little frightened by the whole thing. Last night was my first try. I think I missed one eye, but got the other I'm sure I will get better with practice. I guess the thought of having to do it FOREVER was what got me. It was caught in the early stages (glaucoma). Again, thanks for the reassurance, it was appreciated.

Have a wonderful celebration and a safe and happy long weekend!

Take care all. Miss ya more than you know!

  44. HAPPY INDEPENDANCE DAY EVERYONE!!!

And to our Canuck friends, Happy July 4th.

This is just a quick fly by before I head out to my son's for a BBQ.

LynnD: Congrats on being the early bird. I hope Mr. Lynn mellows out.

Ronnie: I never had homemade ice cream until I was married. My hubby's parents made it for every holiday, but they used evaporated milk instead of cream and I didn't like it. I have since had REAL homemade ice cream and it is delish.

VIG: Thanks so much for the private Owls Nest concert. You are in fine voice today. I never knew all the other verses to our anthem. Guess I'm a poor example of an American.

Mary/MI: I'm with you about camping. My idea of roughing it is a motel with no TV.

Zona: So you weren't the perfect child that Tinka keeps telling us you were. Hmmmmmm

Carol: Thanks so much for posting that video and sharing your family traditions with us.

And Thanks Mo too for helping Carol get the blog posted for all of us.

    ReplyDelete
  45. When I was a child we used to celebrate with just a few fireworks, mostly sparklers. My brother, who is 9 years older, got to set them off and we sat way back to watch. I always wanted to set off just one, but noooooo. So when I got to adulthood and I could do it, my hubby always set them off because he said they were too dangerous for me to do it. I think he didn't trust me not to screw it up. I am kind of a clutz.

I hope everyone has a good day and be safe. BBL

  47. Happy 4th, hooters!

Me and MR. EBJ will be staying home today and will throw some shrimp on the barby (literally).

Poe is very frightened by fireworks, and this is our first July 4th in this house. We don't know what kind of celebration the neighbhood will have, so want to be close to home so we can keep him calm.

We always had a big celebration at my mom and dads when I was a kid. My dad was an airline pilot and would pick up the best fireworks in Japan.

The whole neighborhood would gather in our court and dad would shoot off the cool fireworks.

Anyone remember those "things" that were a black lump, and you'd light them and it would grow into a worm? Can't remember what those were called.

They'd be all over the sidewalk the next day, tho.

All the kids would get sparklers and run around with them.

    Great memories!

Hope everyone has a fun, safe day!

OH! VIG you performed a lovely rendition of the national anthem!! Thank you!

Okay, here's a tribute to the American Owls and your special day. I was in the shower just now and suddenly I was singing "God Bless America"! It just came to me and I was surprised at how many words I knew. So God (or the higher power you believe in) bless America and all the special Owls who live there! Happy 4th of July! And now for my second song of the day:

    GOD BLESS AMERICA

    Author:
    Irving Berlin, 1918; revised 1938
    Spoken Introduction:
While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.

    |: God bless America, land that I love
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with the light from above
From the mountains To the prairies,
To the ocean white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home. :|

  50. HAPPY FOURTH EVERYBODY!

MO~Thanks for posting Carol's special blog for us! Hope she's having a blast at the shore with the nephews.

VIG~Taking 'the girls' out on the town today, eh? Good for you, and thanks so much for singing to us!

SHIRLEY~We're about to fire up the BBQ here but I don't think I would have made it this far without your buffet spread. And, homemade ice cream with fresh peaches and strawberries....no better Fourth of July memory. Thanks!

I think my most memorable fireworks were Seattle's 1976 Bicentennial synchronized-to-music display. Ivar (of the famous clam chowder) always put on a great show, but that year was beyond description. In recent years, the night-time highlights for me are the hilarious 'Capitol Steps' holiday satire on PBS and The Boston Pops. (Am I the only one who will get all teary each time I see a cute little kid on daddy's shoulders waving a flag to the music while staring wide-eyed up at the 'bombs bursting in air'?)

Hope all are having a safe & fun day. See ya tomorrow!

  51. Tina, SNAKES why didn't I think of that? I'm just so bad with remembering those simple things! ;)

Carol, your memories sound very familiar to how we celebrate today. Except we don't have a large family, we have a lot of neighbors. We pull out a few large tables, Berry sets up our canopy and the kids run around the cul de sac just waiting for the sun to set. We pull out one of the BBQ grills and all the neighbors bring their own meat to cook, plus something to share at the table. I usually sit and paint the girls fingernails~ a blue thumb and then red/white fingernails. I even have a clear coat with tiny stars to put over the blue. I will have to post a photo, but it is awfully cute!!

I just finished making my potato salad. Next I am going to make brownies, a lemonade cake and a bowl full of cut up watermelon w/ blueberries. I went to the grocery store and got a few bags of ice and some sodas, plus juice pouches for the kids. It is drizzling and gray, but that won't stop us! If we get cold, Berr will build a firepit and we will all sit around until fireworks time.

I am going to go and read all your comments now and then I need to head back into the kitchen. Just wanted to pop in and say HI though!

  53. Hello again feathered friends!

I have had a very busy day of napping ;)

VIG...you sing soooo much better then I do! Thanks for both songs today!

I can NOT take any credit for the blog getting posted. It is set to auto publish, I only have to check and be sure it did. If it didn't, then I can fix it for CaRol.

My brother used to light those snake things in the house in the kitchen! Oh boy was my mom pissed at that...ruined the linoleum!!!

    SHIRLEY...thanks for the snacks! You always take such good care of us. {{hugs}}

  54. Zona~ Thanks for posting the lyrics to our nat'l anthem. One of my fondest memories of growing up in Baltimore is going to Ft. McHenry where Francis Scott Key wrote the poem that was later set to music...and thus a nat'l anthem was born. The fort has a beautiful show about the event.

Linda in Squamish~ Ironic because I well up with tears when I hear "Oh Canada". I grew up going to Canada once a year and loved my Canadian friends. We are all very lucky to have such great neighbors to the North and South!

Barb~ You Happy Camper You! Only here would you go camping and find WiFi!! You gotta love this country!

OK, no more slacking. Back to the kitchen for me. Happy 4th everyone! If you all have a Flickr account look me up. I am getting into photography again and will be posting photos later.

  55. LynnD Congrats on being first on the fourth! LOL

Mo and Carol Thank you both for today's blog.

I was awakened today by not one, not two, but THREE automated phone calls to inform me that there would be a $1,000 fine for anyone caught setting off illegal fireworks. Okay, I think I got the message. Usually, there are more illegal fireworks bursting high in the sky than there are legal ones low to the ground. When my children were babies, the City used to have a professional fireworks display set up at the beach. The fireworks bursting over the ocean is really spectacular as all the colors are reflected in the water. Unfortunately, budget cut-backs took that away many years ago.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy day today.

I bet Tina is expert at everything HOmade. ;)

  61. HI GUYS!! Just a quick fly by...getting ready to eat..

SANDIE: We're not sure how Nikki will react. She doesn't seem too fond of thunder. We'll keep our fingers crossed that she does ok. Give your fraidy dogs a hug for me, okay?? :)

MARY/MI: Hope you are enjoying your wonderful weather, it's hot here. Not going to say another word about it though. ;) Oh, and my sis remembers it this way: I stranded her up on the roof, took the ladder and laughed at her not being able to get down. I can't imagine how why she thinks this is the way it happened, I think she must have hit her head the day I jumped on her bed and bounced her out the window. ;)

    LINDA/SQUAMISH: Good to see you!

SHIRLEY: Thanks for the snacks!! Do as I say and not as I do please, and call!

SACBARB: I've been a perfect child from the moment I met MamaTink...;)

EBJ: I hope Poe will be ok. And ummm....:D!!!

BON'O: Love the Boston Pops and the Capital Fourth...

J/LIN: I have a feeling it doesn't take too much to get your mind wondering in the direction of Custard!! ;)

TINA: My sister cried the whole time she was up there too!! It was awful!! She is coming over tomorrow...I'll see if she'll climb up there for "old times sake"..LOL!! Pool will be in use tonight, just waiting for the sun to go down. ;)

    Have fun everyone!!

  62. GLYNIS: I would be remiss if I didn't let you know it was my good friend VIG that posted the lyrics to the National Anthem. I don't think I even know all the verses!!

    TINA: Congrats on that 69...!!

  63. Happy 4th Evening..

the thunder and lightening is rolling in - they are hoping that the weather doesn't stop the firework displays that are planned in the "mountains"...

Barney hates thunder and fireworks, so I'm in for a long evening - poor guy!!

I hope everyone has had an excellent day!!

and if the weather prevents me from getting on later..

    Have an excellent Saturday!!
    :-)

  64. I hope everyone had a wonderful July 4th!

Zona, MEK and anyone else with pets afraid of the fireworks, I hope it's going well for you! Luc & Remy went outside but I had to go with them and they wouldn't leave my side. I'm going to try later when the fireworks calm down but now I don't know if I'll get them back out. They are staring at me--they want to go to bed! They are so funny--just like babies.

  66. Hiya hooters!

Hope everyone is having a nice holiday today.

We have been very low-key. It's been wonderful!

Some of our neighbors are having parties and there have been a couple very loud (explosions?). Poor Poe, he is so frightened, but so far he has stayed on his cage and not flown off.

We were thinking of driving over to the waterfront, each year they have fireworks over the delta, and it's spectacular.

But, MR. EBJ does not want to leave Poe home alone and he doesn't want to take him, so we will probably stay home and watch them on tv!

I hope everyone's furry or feathered babies will be safe tonight. I know when I used to work at the vet clinic, lots of people would come in for 4th of July tranquilizers.

  67. ZONA! Thank you for the Poe shout-out! ;)

  68. HAPPY 4TH OF JULY. We are sitting here in the dark watching the Boston Pops firework show. It is testing my typing skills but Mr D is enjoying them on the large tv screen in the dark. It is pretty neat. I hope everyone has enjoyed the holiday today.

We went up in the mountains to Blackhawk to gamble and have an early dinner. We didn't walk too far so I was able to breathe. My husband won about $80 and I lost about the same and that was on the penny slots. It was a nice drive and getaway. It was 95 here today. The buffet at the casino had candy apples and cotton candy (on the stick) in the dessert section!!! Yummy on the cotton candy...and I didn't have any kids I had to share with..all my own.

Last night we went to the park near us and met my daugter and family and they brought a picnic and we sat out for about three or four hours waiting for the fireworks. It was a nice family night.

We weren't allowed to havr snakes when we were a kid because it stained the sidewalk. We always felt so deprived and had to go the neighbors' house.

  69. Part two:

ZONA: I can just see you stranding your poor little sister on the roof. I would have spankied your bottom. BUT, if get her up there tomorrow..please post your pictures.

SANDIE: I had to smile when you said your mom has a picnic on Thanksgiving..no picnics that time of year in Colorado. It must be warm and nice where you live.

VIG: Thanks for all the singing today. Next time maybe MARY/MI can play her karoke machine for you. SIRLEY; thanks for the snacks..perfect. CAROL: Great blog and hope you are having fun.

TINA: Are you still on your own or is your family home? BTW, where is JODI today?

Ok...for you people East of Colorado..I just am watching the weather and our humidity today 7%!! No wonder we are so hot! :)

  70. Dianne It sounds like you've had a very nice couple of days. I'm glad to hear that you are getting out and having some fun. When you're 100%, you'll be getting out and causing trouble, I'm sure.

want Waving a wing at you.

  71. Hey J/L, W2S~~~Speak up, I can't hear you; still kinda LOUD here!

  72. I just talked to ZONA and she and Mr Z are getting ready to jump in the pool and I "think" they are not going to have any swimsuits on..just thinkin' She mentioned that they were going to swim earlier but needed to wait until the neighbors were inside....inquiring minds want to know.... THEN she said she wished I was there to go in with them!!! What a tease that girl is!!!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Ok guys, if you don't believe me go and look at her status on MS..."going swimming--excited". Need I say more.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hi BONO, JUSTLIN AND W2S...things getting quieter for you all? It's after midnight and I am not hearing any more fireworks.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Funny thing...tonight, as we were hearing firecrackers go off, I turned to MrD and said, "Happy New Year." He pays so much attention to me talking that he said, "same to you" and then realized what I had said. It reminded me of New Years Eve and us just sitting here in our recliners like a couple of oldies.

  76. Hey Dianne, J/L, Bon'O and Want. Just flying by on my way to bed. I hope everyone had a nice day. Good night.

  77. Dianne~Mr. D's not the only one with holiday confusion. Watching the beloved Boston Pops tonight, I kept thinking "Bah, Humbug!" Enjoyed the fireworks, but the Pops, not so much. I think I'd rather be "swimming".

Just beginning to calm down here.

Niters, Barb! I'm right behind you. Zzzzzz

  78. Ok it was out there and I couldn't just leave it! I'm really going now.
