Useless Facts!

by Maureen

I don't know what made me look up useless facts...maybe because I have to think all day at work! But for some odd reason I googled and this is what I found. Regardless of how full our minds are, there's always room for more uselessness!!

# If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.
# If you fart consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.
# The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet.
# Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.
# Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.
# On average people fear spiders more than they do death.
# The strongest muscle in the body is the TONGUE.
# It's impossible to sneeze with your eyes open.
# You can't kill yourself by holding your breath.
# Americans on the average eat 18 acres of pizza every day.
# Every time you lick a stamp, you're consuming 1/10 of a calorie.
# Did you know that you are more likely to be killed by a champagne cork than by a poisonous spider?
# In ancient Egypt, Priests plucked EVERY hair from their bodies, including their eyebrows and eyelashes.
# A pig's orgasm lasts for 30 minutes.
# A crocodile cannot stick its tongue out.
# The ant can lift 50 times its own weight, can pull 30 times its own weight and always falls over on its right side when intoxicated.
# Polar bears are left handed.
# The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds, that makes the catfish rank #1 for animal having the most taste buds.
# The flea can jump 350 times its body length, that is like a human jumping the length of a football field.
# A cockroach will live nine days without it's head before it starves to death.
# The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the males head off.
# Some lions mate over 50 times a day.
# Butterflies taste with their feet.
# Elephants are the only animals that can't jump.
# A cat's urine glows under a blacklight.
# An ostrich's eye is bigger than it's brain.
# Starfishes haven't got brains.
# After reading all these, all I can say is....Damn those Pigs!

I want to know who got ants drunk to watch how they fall over. And who banged their head against a wall to measure the caloric burn? And what perv sat there and timed a pig's orgasm? How do they know polar bears are left handed...do they watch them write letters? How did the praying mantis female discover that kind of foreplay? How do crocodiles tease each other if they can't stick out their tongue? How many beans do you need to consume to be able to fart for 6 years and 9 months consistently...and who volunteered for this test? Can you imagine if a lion mated with a pig???????

And they say the brain is a terrible thing to waste!!!!!!

  1. Maureen,

I love useless facts! That is the type of stuff I remember.

I can never remember stuff like keys and eyeglasses!

    Great blog Mo!

  2. Moweenie, you just crack me up. Funny, funny blog today--I'm still laughing! You should do stand-up comedy, girl!

    Good morning, iteach!

    Good morning sandie!

Maureen, great blog! Whenever I hear facts like this it always brings up more questions, like the ones you had. TY

  5. LMAO MO! Great job on the blog. Your questions about the facts are remind me of George Carlins'.

My family always teases me about having useless knowledge in my head. My brother is the same. Some random fact that you really have no idea how it got there.

Years ago we were watching "Millionarie" with Regis- and the 1 mil question was: "Who was the first quarterback to say he was going to Disney?" I knew it- I was screaming at the tv before they even listed the choices. My husband and sons thought I was a lunatic. They were HUGE football fans (and players) and they didn't know. Damn, I still think that show owes me a million bucks..

Good morning to all you hooters- congrats on 1st iteach.

  6. Oh, and the answer was Phil Simms :)

  7. Morning Glories!

    Wohoo! Iteach got first!

Ok Banging ones head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour....Wrong! I would be Super Model skinny then.

Human and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure??? How can they know this? Did they do an interview. My understanding is that they are discovering new species all time which tells me this is not a fact. LOL

A pigs orgasm last 30 minutes. I think this is a rumor that Mopiggy started to make us jealous!

A cockroach can live 9 days without his head. I actually believe this as I think they can even survive a nuclear attack!

    Great Blog Mo! LMAO

  9. Happy Fourth of July Eve Everyone!!

MO: I LOVE this stuff...OMG, you made me LMAO this morning.

Who knew that Mr. Z could solve the energy crisis all on his own??

I've been losing weight everyday for 20 years...just by being frustrated.

I knew dolphins had the right idea!

I wonder if some people's tongues are much stronger than other's...depending on the work out??

I have a friend who could kill you by NOT holding his breath!

    LOL LOL LOL...lucky pig!!

At least the female praying mantis knows to keep the good parts!

    LOL LOL LOL...lucky LION!!!

    OMG...just loved these MO...thank you!

  10. Split Post!

I hope all of my WA blog buddies are doing ok! We had quite a thunder and lightening storm come through last night. As a matter of fact still hear some thunder in the distance.

I must be a true WA baby as I slept like a log through it. Mr. Lynn D said it was flashing and rumbling here all night.

  11. Happy Thursday Owls.

Mo: Great blog topic today. I, too, always wonder how these kinds of facts are determined. And other things too, like who learned that you could use tomato soup for the liquid in a chocolate cake and it would taste good? (It really does!)

Waving a wing at Iteach (congrats on #1), Sandie, Grandma Moses, and Goldie, and all who land after me.

    P.S. I think I want to come back as a pig :O)

    ReplyDelete
  16. That should read MORE carefully...

  17. Hi Sandie! You little morning glory you!

Zona: I could come up with 6 combacks to your misreading but I don't want to take Mr. Lynn D's and Mr. Z's names in vain! LMAO!

  25. Good Morning All Owl.

Maureen - You certainly started everyone off in a good mood. I am going to read the post a second time. They are a hoot.

Lynn - I was awakened by the worst thunder I have ever heard. It rolled on and on. It didn't come our way however so I guess maybe that was your storm I heard. I have to ask VIG. I will be back after reading my messages. Have fun.

Congrats Iteach on 1st! Good luck with your rummage sale!

  30. Good Morning Shirley - I forgot we could order breakfast. I would like pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream. I feel decadent today.

    ReplyDelete
  31. MEK: Laptap? Thunder...lightning? Nah..too easy!! LOL!!

TINKA: I went to bed early last night and Mo's blog just filled me with smiles this morning. It isn't any cooler, but it sure seems like a bright day! :)

    HI SHIRLEY!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Zonababy - Mo's blog brightened my day too. She is so funny and so are you.
I woke to rolling thunder in the middle of the night. It was loud but I think it was over Washington. We didn't get any rain. I have never heard thunder that lasted so long. It was really
    "rolling thunder".

    ReplyDelete
  33. Zonababy - I just loved your 4th of July picture comment with the little bear. He is so cute.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I found a "useless fact"

The lightning that we see actually goes from the ground to the sky in what is known as the "return stroke" at 1/3 the speed of light. We can't see the initial "stepped leader" that passes from the sky to the ground.

Now I feel I have added something to the blog even if my addition is boring.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Here is another one-

A female ferret will die if it goes into heat and cannot find a mate.

With that interesting fact I am going to leave and have breakfast while watching Regis.

    ReplyDelete
  36. oh man....mo....your comments at the end are hilarious!!!!!

i do believe i have personally created at lest 6 atomic bombs....

i now know why mo uses a pig as her avatar......

where can i find one of these lions????

never mind the lion.....where can i find a male praying mantis????

    ReplyDelete
  37. lynn....OMG was that storm horrible down here last night! woke us up at 2:30 or so with the lightening and the thunder cracking and bursting right over the backyard! no seconds in between. i went running around the house turing everything off, like the computer and we had the tv on in the bedroom. lasted over an hour before it had moved away enough to have several seconds between the flash and the boom. even the kittens were freaked out poor things. they started scratching at their door so we let them out. kodi ran around all freaked out and aly followed us right into our room. she ended up under the bed the rest of the night and kodi slept at my feet. although he kept watching out the window the entire time!

  38. Re-post from A51:

Hello, SacBarb! Are you keeping the home fires burning? How about you, DJ?

GROAN! Sorry... couldn't help myself! I'm writing this from my sis and bro-in-law's place in Toronto, so our beloved home state is (and seems) rather far away.

This afternoon Huz flies in, and we're off to a three day family celebration at a resort on Balsam Lake, near Lindsay, Ontario. I'm not sure there's any internet access up there, so:

Dianne: Hope your strength keeps returning.

Sleep: make sure you get some.

Shirley: I don't want you barefoot or pregnant, but please stay in the kitchen while I'm gone!

    Glynis: ;)

East Bay: Can't wait for the BABB!

GM: Say hi to everybody in chat, and don't forget the birthday party next Wednesday!

MEK and Zona: Stay cool... somehow!

VIG: Waving to you across the Prairies!

Tinkatia: why all that sadness, indeed! Hugs to you...

Goldie: Don't ask, don't tell! LOL!

Amicus, Lynn D, Bon'O, Ronniegirl, Tina, iteach, scirish, Barb in WA, lovey, J/L, Jennifer, Bebbi, Mary in MI, IBB, and Carol: Have a GREAT 4th of July Weekend!

  39. Here's a useless fact...

Count the number of cricket chirps in a 15-second period, add 37 to the total, and your result will be very close to the actual outdoor Fahrenheit temperature.

Now that I've read this, I just know I'm going to be counting and adding without even realizing it, just to see if this works.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Whabbear - Nice to hear from you. I saw your post yesterday but it was at the end of area 51 and I think a lot of owls missed it. I am feeling great today but I will take the hugs anyway. Have fun and stay safe.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ok it seems to have passed us by again and I am taking a chance and turning the computer back on.

BarbWa: It passed through here again this morning. Our poor older dog tried to climb the wall and look in the window. I had to put her in the garage. Very unusual for us to get Thunder storm during the day!!! Crazy weather. I am happy for the rain tho. We have 4 acres of grass hay and I worry about the 4th. We have new neighbors that are young couples and I am very afraid about what they will be lighting off for the 4th.

I told Mr. Lynn D that I want to come home early from the bbq we are going to tomorrow. As I want to be sure to be home if one of them starts a fire. I want to know who to sue and kick ass on if it happens.

Will be checking in with you all while I try to get some housework done.

Tinka: The thunder has been crazy!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Zona - But how do I find the crickets? I have never heard them here? Can the crickets tell the temperature in celsius too?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Lynn - Like I said before I have never heard thunder like it. Only on the Garth Brooks "Thunder Rolls" have I heard thunder like that. I did not see any lightning however so it must have been a long way from here.

    ReplyDelete
  44. TINKA: Really?? Wow..they drive me crazy here. Nikki likes to chase them, but she'll have to stop that while I count...;)

    ReplyDelete
  45. MO! I LOVE your blog! I also love useless trivia! (I am like ITEACH in that I can remember these facts more than I can about the knowledge I'm supposed to have)!!!

OK...I'm wondering about the pigs. Do ya think it was a 4-H assignment?! LOL!!!

ITEACH: Congrats on being both #1 and #2!!

Morning all you owls that have flown in! (Sandie, GM, Goldie, Lynn D, Zona, SacBarb, EBJ, Tink, MEK, Shirley, BarbWA, and Whabbear)!

Have a great day everyone (and those who fly in later). I have a party to go to tonight and then I will be having people over for the 4th tomorrow.

I'll check in later tonight or early in the morning!

    ReplyDelete
  46. LYNND: It's illegal to set off fireworks here..but we have neighbors that didn't read that law. It's so hot and dry, you think THEY would think!

    HI BEAR!!!

    MEK: Congrats on 50!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. JENNIFER: Have fun..be good!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Good Morning Owls!! And welcome back Whabbear~ you were terribly missed around here.

Mo, I loved your blog. Nothing like a mom sitting at her computer laughing in the morning to make the kids wonder what I am up to. HA! I'll never tell!

I kept thinking that if anyone ever says "You eat like a pig" we all have a great come back now!

Barb and Lynn~ Those storms were crazy here too! I had three really scared kids last night, since we rarely see or hear lightning and thunder in this area, so I put them all in my bed, we turned off all the lights and pretended it was a big show. We counted seconds between the lightning and the thunder and when my daughter asked what you should do if you ever see it and hear it at the same time, I told her to run for her life and get inside quick! It was kinda fun...

The most amazing lightning I have ever seen was while on a Greyhound bus crossing the US. We were somewhere near Van Horn, TX and the land was flatter than a pancake. You could see lightning that was probably 50 miles away. It was beautiful. The next day I met Berry...then I saw some REAL electricity! HA!

OK...blushing at the thought... hope you all have a great day! It was fun chatting with you Barb!!

Whab~ ;) right back at ya!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Zona - Do they look like Jiminy Cricket on the Disney shows?

VIG - Do we have crickets here? I only hear frogs in the late summer months.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Zona - "64 for Tinka". You know I am not that old!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. TINKA: I wish they did...they are brown and creepy..and jumpy..

68 for myself?? wth! must have had a lapse in judgement..

    ReplyDelete
  52. TINKA: SORRY!! I'm not use to the daylight, I get all confused!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Three more useless facts --

The average human eats 8 spiders in their lifetime at night.

More people are killed by donkeys annually than are killed in plane crashes.

Women blink nearly twice as much as men.

I don't believe that second one but do computers lie?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Zona - I like you up in the daytime. I like knowing you are in my computer all day.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Zona - I thought I would jump on your head. You must be back at myspace.

    ReplyDelete
  56. The first couple to be shown in bed together on prime time TV was Fred and Wilma Flintstone. Which takes us back to the theme song!

It is impossible to lick your elbow. How many are trying to do this now that you have read it? LOL

    Q. What do bullet-proof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers, and laser printers all have in common?

    A. All invented by women.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Lynn - I liked your last fact. I guess it was women who felt those things were necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Tinka: Notice that all of those items except the laser printer have something to do with saftey! LOL Of course it took a woman to invent them.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Lynn - That must be the nurturer in all of us.

    ReplyDelete
  60. MO~What a great first read in the morning! As I read them the first time, I was guessing which owls would have comebacks on which facts. So many straight lines, so little time! For now, I have to clear out a creepy visual of Egyptian priests~~OUCH,have they not heard of bikini waxing? Maybe focusing on a 'pride' of lions will do it.

Beautiful clear (no smoke) blue skies today. What a treat!

Off to prep for the Big Boom Day. Hope you all have a BLAST!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Terrific blog today Mo!

I have always said I have a head full of useless information. I love playing Trivia games.

Some of those you wrote about really cracked me up! And I agree, whose job is it to check all these things???

On the subject of jobs, (were we talking jobs)?? anyway does anyone watch the Travel Channel? I LOVE that show. I feel like I am vicariously traveling to all those wonderful places, staying in all those 5 Star Hotels and just luxuriating in heaven!

Back on the subject at hand. I want to be Samantha Brown!! She gets to go everywhere, do everything, and GETS PAID!!! What a wonderful life!

Whabbear~ Thanks for asking about the air quality up here in Santa Rosa. We have had beautiful clear blue skies for three days straight! The strong off-shore breezes kicked in a few days ago and pushed that smoke somewhere else. I am afraid though, that SacBarb and EBJ may have inherited all that smoke! Plus, the Mendocino county fires are mostly under control. But they showed a map of all the fires on the news, and they are EVERYWHERE in Northern Ca. Many of them are up in Trinity and Humboldt county where I used to live.

I hope all our PNW Owls are safe and dry. I love thunderstorms and lightening! We don't get that here in Sonoma County very often. But, I don't want any damage to happen to any of our Owls. Stay Safe!

Well my friends, I am off now to run errands and finish getting all the necessities for my visit with my daughter and grandbaby!!! Lets see, Target, Trader Joes, and the supermarket are all on the list!

Waving madly to everyone here, and those who will swoop in later!

Love and Peace, Donna Jean and Laurie Elizabeth

  62. Useless fact

No other animal gives us more by-products than the hog. These by-products include pig suede, buttons, glass, paint brushes ...

Maureen - If that doesn't make you feel useful I don't know what would.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Glass? How does a pig produce glass?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Shirley - I have no idea how glass comes from pigs. I am just assuming the computer is right and quoting it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. On average, 100 people choke to death on ballpoint pens every year

A snail can sleep for three years. ( This is for want)

The electric chair was invented by a dentist. (hmmmmmmm) Actually no hmmm here I have suspected this for a long time!

On a Canadian two dollar bill, the flag flying over the Parliament building is an American flag. Tinka is this true?

Ok have to go clean the downstairs bathroom.

    ReplyDelete
  66. DJ~I'm with you about the Travel Channel, and have always said Samantha Brown has MY dream job. Lately, I've decided to let her go through the grief of travel and just sit back and reap the rewards.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Lynn - We haven't used a two dollar bill for years. We have a two dollar coin called a Toonie. Who ever came up with Loonie for one dollar and Toonie for the other must have either had a sense of humour or was an idiot. I have a two dollar bill tucked away with my treasures. I will check and see what flag is flying. Thanks for that information.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I did it. I made 100. Whoopie. I am off to have my Slim Fast and a nap. I will be back Lynn with that flag answer.

Have a wonderful afternoon everyone. Thanks again for the fun Maureen. That was great.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Lynn - I found the two dollar bill. The flag is so small that even looking at it with a large magnifying glass it is impossible to make out for sure what is on it. It does however look like a maple leaf to me. There were different versions of each bill so maybe there are some with the American flag. I will keep investigating that. It interests me. See you all later.

  74. Tina - I don't know what you did but you changed my daughter from a Night Owl to a Morning Owl. I was able to talk to her almost all day. Did you hypnotize her?
Thanks for noticing I made "100". That's a first for me.

Tango, Tia and I just got back from our daily walk or should I say Tia and I. Tango sits up riding like a queen most of the way.

Ronnie - That stroller is the best thing for a dog who can't walk far. Thanks for finding that on the web for me. It's great.

  75. Everyone sure must be having a lot of pre 4th of July fun. I made it to 100 six hours ago and we are now only on 107. I wonder what you all can be doing? My imagination is getting away from me. I am jealous.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I guess I will play by myself.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Tinka Don't be jealous. I was washing my car. Congrats on 100!

    ReplyDelete
  85. I am trying not to step on you but you are so little and delicate.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Tinka No I just washed it and towel dried it. I need to get somebody else to do the waxing. I wish I was little and delicate in real life. Well, maybe when I was in kindergarten I was. LOL

  98. All the talk about firecrackers - it is illegal in our state - but that sure doesn't stop the kids from getting them........ my dogs HATE them - so I have to stay up and keep the "big guy" calm!! crossing my fingers that tomorrow night is not very bad!!

most of the big displays have been canceled due to the dryness - to prevent fires from sparking up!!

    I hope everyone has a SAFE 4th!!

  103. LYNN...a couple of years ago, after my fire some asshole kids were setting off fireworks in the little playground area next to my unit. I was scared they would land on my roof and start another fire. I watched them out a window in the dark and sure enough, one hit the unit across from me. I called the cops and they were here in minutes. But the kids took off thru some woods. At least it stopped them. Last year was quiet and I pray this year is too. This year we had a lot of rain today so it isn't too dry on the roofs and lawns.

  104. ITEACH...lost my keys...in my pocket! I looked all over the house, the car, my purse...couldn't find them. Called a locksmith...reached for something in my pocket and there they were! DOH!!!!!

Left my glasses in a fitting room on a busy Saturday in a store...thankfully I decided to try something else on about an hour later and imagine my surprise when I saw them on the little shelf! Ya'd think I would have realized before that that they weren't on my face! LOL!

  110. Mary - I am sorry about your eyes. I have a problem seeing out of my left eye. As my almost 97 year old mother would say "I don't know why I am having trouble seeing now. My eyes have always been perfect". Aging isn't for the weak that's for sure.
At least the drops should help right?

  111. That's it for me tonight. My 39 year old (plus) back is aching. No more marching for me.
Have a safe and happy 4th. tomorrow. I am looking forward to seeing the fireworks on T.V.
I wish I were in Cincinnati. They make fireworks there and have fantastic displays. Ah the good old days, the 90's.
    Good Night and God Bless.

  113. Good night Tinka.
I was just reading the info on the eye drops I have to use. Says it may cause my eyelashes to thicken and grow long, may cause eye lids to darken and increased pigmentation of the iris, eh? I hate putting anything in my eyes! Tonight will be my first try at it. I don't know if it will make my eyes blurry, so I will say good night. Have a great 4th everybody!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Good night Mary... I will tell you the whole story about meeting Berry someday. I will tell you though that nothing ON the bus made me blush.... it all came later!

  115. Woo hoo Tink!! Thanks for the drink!! I am so happy I could be #2000. I am sure someone would have marched ahead of me if they knew you were counting that high!
