The Day Elvis Died!
by Tinka
Oh, how well I remember the day I heard that Elvis died. It was August 16th at 3 p.m. I was going up a flight of stairs when my son who was listening to his radio, said "Mom, Elvis is dead". It was a good thing I was hanging on to the railing because I literally swooned. I swung around still hanging on. It was such a sudden shock. I never admitted this to any of my friends because we were far from being teenagers and my friends were so critical of how people were reacting. I don't think I left the T.V. for four days, watching all the coverage of this sad event.
My sister and her family were in Hawaii at the time. She said there were displays in every store window showing Elvis memorabilia. She was told they considered Elvis to be a native son ever since he filmed "Blue Hawaii" in 1961 and had his "Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii" concert in 1973. It was the first show to be ever broadcasted globally by satellite to more millions of people in more countries than had ever been before. They loved him in Hawaii.
The highlight of my travels was my visit to Graceland in 1996. They were already getting ready for the big 20th Anniversary that would be coming in 1997. To see his home, his jets, his memorabilia and his graveyard was a trip I will never forget. It was interesting to see the the bus load after bus load of tourists arriving, many from England, Australia and every country one could think of. Some told me it was was their 6th or 10th visit to Graceland. These women were as old or older than I was so I no longer felt I had to hide being an Elvis fan.
Do you remember the day Elvis died or was it for you just another hot day in August?
First!!!
ReplyDeletewooo hoo and second Good morning to all hoooooooooooo fly in!
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Everyone...and I'm off to read the blog!!
ReplyDeleteTink,
ReplyDeleteYour blog made me cry! What a great one. I was at home when I heard that Elvis died. My parents were both from that era and they were so shocked and devastated. I didn't understand completely the full love of Elvis there was until that day.
We have a home movie of my mom and dad at the gates of Graceland when they were in their twenties. Only my family and a few friends have seen it. Elvis drives up with a car full of women. He waves at the camera.
Thank you for such a touching blog. I love Elvis and don't live that far from Memphis. I need to go and see Graceland. I have never been!
I hope everyone has a great day!!
Good morning Zona!! :)
Happy Saturday Owls.
ReplyDeleteGood morning Bebbi, Congrats on first today.
Hey Zona, where ya been????
Tinka, I remember exactly where I was the day Elvis died. One of my co-workers was going in to each office to tell everyone and soon we were all in a group outside our offices, many with tears streaming down. It was just so hard to believe.
No Olympics for me today. I am leaving right now for Dublin (not Ireland but CA). It is in the Bay Area, about a two hour drive from here and we have to be there by 8:30. Have a good day everyone and I'll check in when I get back.
Good morning Sacbarb! Have fun in Dublin. :) Be safe in your travels.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning,
ReplyDeleteJust sitting here in my quiet house. My husband and his father took the boys to the Dream Cruise.
Tinka what a great blog on Elvis. My mom LOVED him also, and along with that my sister and I also LOVED him. I think everyone loved Elvis. My In-Laws, my husband, and his sister, all my friends and their parents. He was a one of a kind. I also went to Graceland just a few years after his death, his father was still living. I signed the fence. We were on vacation at Kings Island when we found out. It was a sad, sad day.
What I found to be strange is when we were there just walking around Graceland at night, there was a guy who was in a black TransAM (he was the passenger) he looked just like ELVIS, I even screamed to him, you look just like Elvis he smiled and waved. Then up the gates up went and the gates closed. Someone told me that was his cousin, but we all around here think its Elvis. I said oh, OK. I was only 11 at the time. It was a very nice trip going to Graceland. They sold Elvis everything, Earrings, bracelets, necklaces, coasters, you name it they sold it.
Bebbi: I loved your Sunflower so much I bought a dozen small sunflowers at Meijers I also bought 2 bunchs of Glads for my family room, it looks so Summery in my house.
Dreama: I miss you!!!!!!
TINKA: I remember exactly what I was doing when I heard Elvis had died. I was 17 years old..and in my room listening to the Broadway cast album of "Funny Girl". I loved singing "Don't Rain On My Parade" as loud as I could, cuz it drove my sister nuts. I was singing away when she opened the bedroom door and said "Elvis died." I looked at her like she was crazy and said "No way..." and she shrugged and closed the door. I started to put the record on again..and then stopped..instead I made my way down the hall and into the family room. My sister and mother had the TV on and I could hear "Are You Lonesome Tonight"...and I KNEW. Elvis was gone.
ReplyDeleteI loved the video TINK. What memories this blog brings back today...thirty one years later. Has it really been that long?? It sure doesn't seem like it. Thank you for a wonderful blog.
Barb, Enjoy your day in Dublin.
ReplyDeleteMO, I was only 20 miles from Cleveland yesterday. I was telling hubby about it, he said you wanna go and see her????? I guess I should of got your address I didn't think that last rest stop on the turnpike was that close to Cleveland. :0( Maybe next time.
Good Morning BEBBI..congrats on FIRST!
ReplyDeleteSACBARB: Missed you! I had a really bad headache...but I'm feeling better now. Drive careful!
HI RENEE!
TINKA: When my sister told me, I really thought she had just made it up to shut me up!
Bebbi:
ReplyDeleteCongrats on First! and Second!
Zona:
My dear friend, Good Morning, and it is sure good to see ya ♥♥♥
Tinka:
Thanks for today's daily blog, I had forgotten about the day Elvis passed.
Your Blog is Perfect for today, Thanks for writing it and sending it off to me...
Good Morning:
ReplyDeleteRenee Eve
Sacbarb
Bebbi
and all that lands after me...
Wow, sacbarb you are up early :O)
I asked Mr. Z if he remembered what he was doing...and he said he was out on the back porch playing darts with his brother. His mom came out and told them. When they went inside to watch the TV coverage, he saw his two older sisters in tears on the sofa. They had seen Elvis live in SanBernardino just a couple years before.
ReplyDeleteI am in a rush...Gotta Run!
ReplyDeleteAll have a great day!
HI CPGEM...great to see you too!! :)
ReplyDeleteZona:
ReplyDeleteSending you aspirin and hugs, as I run out the door...
Zona: Thats funny about irritating your sister, are you older or younger??? I'm the older sister, and we got along very well, but sister will be sisters. She use to irrate me and then me her. But when I was in 7,8, & 9th grade, she would wear all my shirts to school. She would wait until I would leave and then sneak in our closet and put one on. I use to babysit and bought nice shirts and jeans, The jeans she never wanted she was a Jordass, Calvin Klein, Gloria Vanderbilt,
ReplyDeletekinda gal. I like K-mart Jeans, but nice shirts. But its funny that you guys did that to each other. Now with her 40 and me 42, we laugh at it.
Good Morning Everyone!!
ReplyDeleteBebbi, congrats on first!
How is everyone today?
Hey, Zona, Barb, Renee, Tink and Carol!!!
Tink, I remember where I was also.
Just at home, cleaning with the TV on. Stopped what I was doing and glued myself to the TV the rest of the day. So sad. I remember going to his concert's and seeing him up close.
Thanks for the vid!
Diane and DonnaJean, I hope your daughters are doing better today♥
CPGEM: Thank you! Have a wonderful day today!
ReplyDeleteRENEE: I'm older...she's wiser..so we balance each other out. ;)
BIRDEE!!!: Good morning my fine feathered friend!
I also wanted to say a HUGE, GINORMOUS and..ummm...belated...HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my older friend...VIG!!! ;)
Zona: They say the older child is BOSSY, that is true in my case, I was always very Bossy to her, and I see my oldest son very BOSSY to his brothers. When we drove in the car when my sister and I were little she always drove the hump so she could feel like she was in the front seat. Now Anthony always gets the front seat and Vincent and Victor have to sit in their seats, #1 Seatbelt rule, #2 No more humps in cars. I rode the hump a few times, the hump hurts. LOL
ReplyDeleteGood morning everyone!!
ReplyDeleteMorning Glories!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on first Bebbi!
Tinka what a lovely blog. I don't remember where I was that day. I do remember that my parents and Aunts and Uncles where quite upset and in shock that someone so young had died and when the stories came out about how, they were very sad and some were even angry.
I have an Uncle that has every original 45 that Elvis ever put out and a huge collection of all of his albums.
The slide show was interesting to watch. They were so young and had so much going for them. Very fun to see the styles of clothing change too.
Sacbarb have fun today!
Hi Renee Eve nice to see you posting again!
Zona my friend you are up early! Waving at ya!
Carol don't run to fast! LOL
Waving a wing at anyone I missed.
Happy Saturday!!!
ReplyDeleteGood morning..
Bebbi - congrats on FIRST!!
Tinka - I will read your blog later today - as I am out the door -
about the swimming last night - AMAZING!!! AND Torres has amazing sportsmanship!!
Waving howdy to everyone and wishing you all an excellent Saturday!!!
:-)
LYNND: Waving back!! Mr. Z has to work this morning..so I got up with him.
ReplyDeleteITEACH: Good morning!
RENEE: Middle child here..totally picked on...lol..
TINKA: I had just gotten Elvis' "Moody Blue" album too...it was pressed on blue vinyl..remember those records??
Good morning MEK!
ReplyDeleteTinka, great blog!
ReplyDeleteMy Father-in-Law's b-day is today and he is a huge Elvis fan.
My mother is also a huge fan.
I have a middle child Vincent, I understand the Middle Child Syndrome, Vincent is always telling me how I let Anthony have everything first, and how Victor gets babied. I'm like you have everything Anthony has. So yes he feels left out. This was sweet of him, when he was sick, I took him to the doctors and I asked him if he wanted to go to lunch with me, just us?? He said yes ok. So you know in school they had to write a mothers day letter to their mother and you know he brought that lunch up in his letter to me, how much he enjoyed just being with me, even though he had a cold. That made me cry. I now try to give each boy their alone time with me. One month I take Anthony, then Vincent, then Victor. Just that letter with him remembering that made me WAKE UP as to how a child needs alone time with their mom.
ReplyDeleteI just vaugely remember that he died. I think I was eight.
ReplyDeleteYes Zona, my mother has that blue album, she never played it. My lovely sister opened it because she wanted to see the blue record.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning iteach and Mek
Good Morning - Bebbi. (First this morning),
ReplyDeleteZona-my-baby, SacBarb, Renee,
Birdee, Iteach, Lynn and Mek.
I see I am not the only one who remembers where she was on the day "The King" died. I was afraid that might be the case. I will be right back as soon as I get both eyes open and take my 'fur babies' outside. See you in ten minutes.
So what is everyone's favorite Elvis song?
ReplyDeleteiteach don't you start school soon???
ReplyDeleteWe start Sept. 2, my baby is going in 2nd grade. He got his postcard thru the mail who his teacher is,he was very excited, he has the same teacher Vincent had. THANK GOODNESS!!!!! Anthonys teacher for 2nd grade was MEAN & CRABBY, and use to walk around her room with no shoes on, and the kids just THREW their coats and back packs all over the coat room, that teacher had no sense of organization.
I'm going school clothes shopping and supply shopping this week.
Now they are asking for 2 soaps and 2 kleenexs, all grades!!!!! Even the Art and Science rooms have a supply list.
Victor will get special reading help again and math, etc. hes a slow learner, his reading has improved and he can read cereal boxes, but hes still behind for 7.
My favorite Elvis Son, I think all of them, LOL. I would have to say Hound Dog. But I loved all his songs. My hubby has a lot of his DVD's when he had concerts, I know he has the one in Hawaii, and a few more. He'll play it for my mom when shes feeling down.
ReplyDeleteI actually start on Monday! Yikes.
ReplyDeleteMon. and Tues. are workshop days and then Wed. is the first day with the students.
It all went way too fast!
I'm off to do all those fun household chores, I will be back later at nap time.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have a favorite Elvis song, hmmmm I do really like the one in the video Tinka provided.
ReplyDeleteTrying to beat the heat this morning and get some things done. It gets so darn hot in the afternoons that I have to do the laundry in the morning!
From area 51: Bono so glad you got your purse back and intact! That is a miracle! I love that there are still good people around.
Dianne: Happy to hear that Tammy is resting more comfortably! Sending lots of (((Hugs)))
DonnaJean: The picture of Laurie Elizabeth looks so good. She really looks like she is improving! (((Hugs))) to you both.
The rest of you, Really, excuse me crotch watching? LOL I do however agree with Bono about the basketball players split skirt shorts. I find it interesting that the guys seem to have gone back to women's wear for the gym ala the early 1900's! Kind of look like bloomers to me.
I have been following the olympics and think it is just a matter of time before it goes all nekkid.
Hey has anyone seen my new M&M's commercial? Very sexy and I did it all in one take! LMAO

ReplyDeleteOh Crap! I forgot I said I work at the foodbank this morning and they just called me. I am jumping into the shower and will try to check back with you all later today!
ReplyDeleteWaving bye bye!
I am back and playing marching games with myself. I can hear all the angels around me including Elvis saying "Get a Life Audrey".
ReplyDeleteI have read all the interesting comments and watched the video again. I love pictures of them when they were young. They seemed so happy. Oh how I relate to that happiness and to the song.
Iteach - I think you were just about the same age at Lisa Marie was when Elvis died. She was visiting Graceland at the time and apparently she ran from room to room screaming "My Daddy's Dead", "My Daddy's Dear". It must have been a huge shock to her. Remember the story that Ginger Alden was living with him at the time. She was the one who found him that morning on the floor. She and her mother sued the estate as they said he had given Ginger a ring and they were going to get married in December. She felt she was the rightful heir to all of his fortune. Of course they lost the case. I think she is waiting tables in Memphis right now.
Tinka,
ReplyDeleteI don't remember that, about, Ginger Alden hmmmm. I'm glad she lost, it should go to his daughter. His daughter is the same age as my sister Lisa LOL, my mom even named my sister after his daughter. But shes Lisa Lyn. My grandmothers name was Evelyn, So I have the EVE and Lisa has the LYN.
Well I have to do my housework, BLAHH Check back later, have a nice day.
Yes Lynn I did see you in that SEXY M&M Commercial. You really left them men speechless, I especially LOVE your shoes.
Congrats on first bebbi!
ReplyDeleteI was just 12 years old (almost 13) when Elvis died, but I do remember it. I couldn't believe it. I was a fan. My most vivid memory about Elvis was not really about him so much as it was about one of his record albums.
My mom had ordered one of his albums for me as a gift and had it delivered to my grandma's house so I wouldn't see it before my birthday. (We lived in a small town where there was only one EXPENSIVE record shop.)
Well, it just so happened that I was at my grandma's house the day it arrived in the mail. It was in brown cardboard so I didn't know what it was, but I could definitely tell it was an album. I couldn't figure out why Grandma wouldn't open it! I kept asking her to and she said she'd do it later. It bugged me to death! What was really weird was that Grandma would've ordered a record album at all! She never listened to music. Matter of fact, I don't think she even had a record player! I finally found out on my birthday what that was all about. I was thrilled with my gift and I listened to that record until I wore it out.
Even when I was young, I was into ALL kinds of music. Elvis was the beginning of Rock 'n' Roll. I loved him.
For today's blog, Tinka, "Thank you. Thank you very much."

ReplyDeleteBebbi - That home movie of Elvis is priceless. You should make a couple of copies and sell them on EBay. They would fetch a "pretty penny".
ReplyDeleteI have a wonderful collection of memorabilia. I have already talked about a lot of it. One thing I love is a book given to me by my daughter called "Elvis Treasures". It has a selection of removable reproductions of rare memorabilia, direct from Graceland. It was put out by the Elvis Presley Enterprises. It is the "King's" life story told through handwritten letters, press releases, movie scripts, photographs and additional memorabilia from the Graceland archives. They are copies of course but they look so authentic. There are letters, to and from him, to his first love, to his mom and Priscilla. There are copies of his contracts and Christmas cards he received. It also has a 60 minute audio CD of candid conversations with Elvis. Along with these 'pull-outs' is the complete story of his life.
I have spent hours with this book and I haven't finished reading everything yet. I think it's the best Elvis present I have ever received.
Zona - You have "got one on me". I have never seen a blue vinyl record. I guess I am just to young to remember. LOL.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Donna and VIG.
ReplyDeleteVIG - I am happy to see your survived your Happy Birthday party. Did you have a good time?

ReplyDeleteOops....I just noticed a huge blunder in the post I left a few minutes ago, so deleted it. Here it is again...all fixed up:
ReplyDeleteGood morning Owls! I am so touched by all the birthday wishes yesterday! You are kind and wonderful people and you made my day! Thank you so much!
Zona....yes, for six whole days I am a year older than you! So, you young thing, you must listen to everything your wise much older auntie says or barks to you! Hope you are well and having a great day!
Tink my good neighbour...fabulous blog! I always love what you write. I was never a big Elvis fan, but I do remember where I was when he died. I had turned 18 the day before and I was working for the summer near Lake Lousie (which is near Banff in the Canadian Rockies) and the drinking age in that province is 18. Needless to say I had had quite the party to celebrate my 18th legal drinking age birthday and was very hung over. I don't drink now and it makes me cringe to remember how hung over I was and still had to go to work as a chambermaid. I remember hearing about Elvis on the radio while I cleaned a room (nothing better than cleaning toilets when you're hung over!) I remember being amazed at how upset people were about him and how it was the top news story for days. He was royalty!
Donna - I remember the thrill of getting the first record of Elvis. It was a 45 'extended play' from his first movie "Love me Tender". I too played it until it was almost worn out. I had all of his extended plays and all of his original Long Plays. I still have the Long Plays but a cousin of my ex borrowed my 8 'extended plays' and never returned them. Jack was too embarrassed to ask for them back. I wish I had fought for them now. I think I have all of his songs on C.D's but there is nothing like having the originals. I have all of his videos but they are now obsolete so I am starting a DVD collection. I think I have three so far.
ReplyDeleteIteach - I don't know if I could pick a favourite song of Elvis. It all depends on my mood. Right now the song on the blog's video is very special to me. I love his slow melodies the best.
ReplyDeleteWhen I bought my first car, a 1957 Nash Metropolitan, Elvis' song "Heartbreak Hotel" was #1. I remember turning the volume up as loud as it would go and I felt like I had the "world by its tail" and I drove around with my hands on the fuzzy wheel cover that was famous in those days. Of course there was the pine smelling tree hanging from the mirror. Any of those things but especially that song brings back such great memories.
VIG - I just read and enjoyed your comment. I guess I will have to convert you to being an Elvis fan.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine you ever drinking but I guess we all did when we were young. Aren't Banff and Lake Louise two of the most beautiful places? You probably would have enjoyed them more if you had been on vacation rather than working as a chamber maid. You must have enjoyed your days off, however.
Yes, enjoy the few days you have left being a year older than my daughter Zona. She will soon be catching up with you.
I am happy you had a great birthday. Wait until next year. You, Zona and I will paint the town Red.

ReplyDeleteGood Morning Everybody!
ReplyDeleteScurrying around playing 'Beat the Heat' today, but having missed Tinka's last blog, I didn't want to let it happen again. Tink, I echo Donna's "Thank you. Thank you very much" for your tribute to your beloved Elvis and the chance to read others' memories.
So sorry, but I was never an Elvis fan. In the 60's/70's I was more of a folk music geek, and a lover of all things Motown. However, I've always found his entire life story fascinating.
Elvis favorites? Hmmm, probably 'Can't Help Falling in Love with You', 'If I Can Dream', 'If Every Day Was Like Christmas'. Funny thing is, I'm not much of a country music fan and not all that religious, but I like Elvis's spiritual and country-influence songs the best.
Zona - When you hear the song "Don't Rain On My Parade," do you think of Elvis?
ReplyDeleteI love stories of you and your sister.
Renee - I am glad Ginger didn't win either. I remember her story being in every magazine.
Lynn - Would you introduce me to your uncle who has the large Elvis collection? Is he single????
I could talk all day about my hero but I must have breakfast. I will be back later.
Thanks Carol, for showing my video.

ReplyDelete60 And I am off!!!!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't pick a favorite Elvis song either. Like Tinka, it depends on my mood. I love to get his Christmas CD out when it's Christmas-time. It will be here before you know it!
ReplyDeleteWell folks, I'm leaving in an hour. Will be gone all weekend... here:
http://www.greatwolf.com/locations/mason/index.aspx
My daughter and I are going with a friend of mine and her son. She's paying for the room. It is her birthday treat to me.
Hubby has to work today and is on-call tomorrow, so he can't go. This will be my last Hoorah before I go back to work on Wed.
My husband said he wasn't sure about our daughter and this boy sleeping in the same room together, but he has nothing to worry about. First of all, both my friend and I will be in there with them, AND the boy is gay. He and his mom just don't know it yet. Seriously.
Oh, Donna, how fun! Have a rockin' great pre-birthday weekend~~Hope everything 'comes out' just fine! Bring back pictures....you know how we are about pictures :-)
ReplyDeleteBonnie - I am sorry I think I missed saying "Hi" to you. "Good Morning my dear friend." I join you in wishing Donna a pre-birthday fun weekend. Have a ball Donna.
ReplyDeleteTo any Elvis fans - If you scroll the little pictures at the bottom of the video you will see a lot more of Elvis. I almost picked
"I Will Remember You" because it is appropriate for today but I chose "Always On My Mind" for personal family reasons.
Now I must go eat.

ReplyDeleteHart: Have Fun!
ReplyDeleteHello to all the Owls who have flown by since my post earlier. I am off to class, have a great day everyone
Carol: Forgot to mention that I like the new layout on the front page of the blog!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the wishes everyone! I'm off for the lodge now!!!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on first, Bebbi! Love your sunflower.
ReplyDeleteTinka, I love your blog about Elvis. I loved him, too! I saw him in concert two years before he died and I really don't ever remember being as excited as I was that day! When they started playing that music and he was about to come out on stage--OMG!!! He was starting to have some problems at that time and he didn't give the best concert (didn't finish a lot of songs he started, etc.) but it didn't matter to me--I was in heaven!! And the women in the audience were going WILD!!
I think my favorite Elvis songs are Love Me Tender, Can't Help Falling in Love and In the Ghetto. I especially was moved by the recent remake of In the Ghetto with Lisa Marie singing with her dad.
I was so stunned the day he died and was just in a state of disbelief. I so didn't want it to be true. Tinka, thank you for a great blog.
Zona, nice to see you back!! You, VIG and I are all just a couple of weeks apart! And, Donna, will you be in the 49 club, too?
Lynn, haven't seen your commercial yet but I'll be on the lookout.
Have fun today, sacbarb!
Hi Renee!! What a sweet Mom you are.
Hi Carol, Birdee, iteach, MEK, Donna, Bon'O and VIG!
Sandie - I envy you for seeing "Elvis, Live in Concert." I had the opportunity to see him in Vancouver in 1958. I think it was his only trip to Western Canada. At the time I didn't want to get involved in the crowds that I knew would be there. Oh how I regret that decision.
ReplyDeleteI almost took a personal day so I could see Elvis in Hawaii in 1973. I was afraid however that I would end up sitting next to a school official on the plane. Going to see Elvis would not be considered an important enough reason to take a P.Day. It would be to me but I don't think it would to the School Superintendent. I had to settle for watching it on T.V. They say it was fantastic.
Zona - Sorry about the typo in my post to you. "to young" should be "too young". I am not setting a very good example for my daughter.
I am off to walk my 'fur babies'. It will be too hot to do that this afternoon. I think we will have heat for a couple more days.
ReplyDeleteI will have a Slim Fast and then drift off to sleep while watching "Blue Hawaii. See you this afternoon. Thank you Owls. You wrote such great comments on my blog. I think you are all wonderful.

ReplyDeleteDONNA JO - Have fun at the Great Wolf....we have one here at the Wisconsin Dells. I've never been there, but hear that it's fun. :D
TINKA - Thanks for an amazing tribute to Elvis. I was only 11 years old when he died. I have fond memories, though of watching the concert from Hawaii, and watching old movies. My Mom had several albums including the Christmas one!! She was quite distraught the day he died, and I remember thinking that it was just so sad that someone so young and talented was gone.
ITEACH - I think my favorite Elvis songs are the one from the video and Suspicious Minds.
VIG - I hope you enjoyed your birthday!!!
Good afternoon everyone. It is a beautiful day here in Mich. I am on my laptop on my patio. My P.C.took a dump and don't expect my new one for a week or so.
ReplyDeleteTinka, My older sister was an Elvis fan. I was more in the Beatles era. I have since become an Elvis fan. My favorite songs are "My Way","Amazing Grace" & "American Trilogy".
IBB~ We have a few apple trees on our property that attract a lot of animals like deer& raccoons.

I'm off to check my space & enjoy the beautiful day!
***WARNING THIS IS A LONG ASS POST***
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon everyone!
Congrats on 1st Bebbi.
Tinka it's always wonderful reading a blog written by you. I am not a screaming, fainting, "OMG it's Elvis" fan. I do enjoy some of his songs. I really like the way he sings "Are You Lonesome Tonight". Do you have pictures of your Elvis stuff? (((HUGS))) and I hope you have a good weekend.

Tina, I think her computer just pooped a little "bit."
ReplyDeletesandie~ roflmao!!!~
ReplyDeleteHere's the In the Ghetto duet I mentioned earlier. I think it's very touching, although I don't like seeing those babies with guns. **shiver**

Bebbi Congrats on first and second! That's a gold and a silver medal for you. :)
ReplyDeleteTinka Loved your blog today. I don't remember the exact day Elvis died but I know I was shocked and saddened. As a kid, I was a huge Elvis fan. I had his posters on my wall and collected Elvis bubble gum cards. Several years ago I was at Graceland. I didn't go on the tour of his house but did enjoy looking around in all the gift shops across the street from the mansion. My favorite Elvis video is the one after he returned from the army. He's wearing all black leather and it is a very intimate setting. Boy, was he ever good looking! I think I liked all his songs except for "In the Ghetto".
Tina and Jodi Woo Hoo for having time off work!
Renee Eve It's nice to see you. :)
DonnaJean and Dianne Continued positive thoughts going your way. (((HUGS)))
Mary/MI I almost forgot.........put that dumping computer on the naughty mat!
ReplyDeleteHey owls!!
ReplyDeleteHope you're all having a great Saturday!
Congrats on first, Bebbi!!
Tinka, LOVE this blog for today. I love Elvis and can still be sad that we lost him when he was so young.
My favorite song is "Are You Lonesome Tonight". I listen to it now and feel like it is so appropriate.
Thank you for this blog, Tinkatia!
I just have to say that Elvis did the best job ever singing "How Great Thou Art"!!!!!
ReplyDeleteTina~ No, not a baby. It was nearing it's "Golden" years was pooping way too often lol!
ReplyDeleteJustLyn~ It was way beyond the naughty mat. It was into the "deep depends"mode lol!
Sandi LOL,"little poops"

ReplyDeleteJust_Lin, sorry I just posted the link to the only Elvis song you don't like right before you posted! :)
ReplyDeleteShirley~ I hope you didn't exert yourself winning the Gold & Silver LOL!!
ReplyDeleteOK, I have got to put this 'puter to bed soon. I feel the urge for a cold one!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the week end everyone!
That was a short nap. I was half way through the movie when I fell asleep. Then Tia decided it was time to get up. Usually they sleep as long as I do. I have to get my hair done in an hour. We are having our last birthday tea for Naomi tomorrow. There won't be many of us, just the ones that couldn't make it to the last two parties. Then I should be able to make her "First Year DVD".
ReplyDeleteJodi - So many of us thought Elvis died too young and under unfortunate circumstances.
Thanks for arranging things with Carol for me yesterday.
Mary - I love Elvis' hymns too. I lot of people don't know that they were his favourite songs to sing. There is a lovely video called "He Touched Me" and it outlines that whole story of his roots in gospel music.
Sandie - I loved that video except as you mentioned, they could have left the guns out of the babies' cribs. I guess they were trying to make their point.
Shirley - Do you think we may start winning some medals yet? We did well in the last Summer Games four years ago.
I too loved Elvis. When I was 14 & 15 years old I would go to the gates of Graceland and search for 4 leaf clovers and hope that I couls catch a glimpse of Elvis. I kept my clovers in a scrapbook along with other memorbilia which turned up missing after I moved. Grrr! The day that he died I was in the kitchen with my Mom and a neighbor called to say that Elvis was dead. We all loved him and were in shock. Years later I was able to take a vacation to Memphis and visit Graceland. I so adored his cypress coffee table with the glass. I had one made just like it. However it was my ex husband who made this so after the divorce he called dibs on it. :(
ReplyDeleteReneeEve
ReplyDeleteJust saw you there. Waving madly up at ya! :0) That is a neat story.
LOL@Hartldo's certainty! We will see...
ReplyDeleteTink: I certainly do remember the day Elvis died, because it coincided with a rather dramatic (and traumatic) event in my family's history!
At the time, we owned a farm in Ontario's Beaver Valley, and had scheduled an old fashioned farm auction on that day, complete with auctioneer. I was in Toronto that day, and will never forget getting a shocked phone call from a family friend who had attended th auction. He kept reassuring me that "everybody was OK". WTF?
Well, it turned out that, as luck would have it, a storm moved through during the auction, and far too many people took shelter in the barn. Next thing they knew, a huge section of the wooden barn floor collapsed, and about 40 people fell about 12 feet onto a concrete floor below.
Nobody was killed outright, but there were several broken legs and other serious injuries, and I think one elderly person died later in hospital.
Luckily, my Dad and the auctioneer had insurance!
August 16, 1974. A day I'll never forget!
And as for Elvis, I think he had just an unbelievably beautiful voice. I love his Rock and Roll hits, but have a particularly soft spot for his romantic ballads, "Are you Lonely Tonight" and "I Can't Help Falling in Love with You".
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to suggest to Huz that "I Can't Help Falling in Love" be our lead-in dance song at our wedding!

ReplyDeleteWhabbear - What a tragedy and it could have been far worse. You will never forget the date August 16th, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteI think "Can't help Falling in Love With You" would be a great wedding dance song. Let me know what Huz thinks of it.
I went over to get my hair done. She was running really late. Suddenly I started to feel sick and felt I couldn't stay. I came home and had the rest of the nap I missed earlier and now I feel fine. Now I don't know whether to phone the hair dresser or not. I have never had that happen before. Any advice owls?
ReplyDeleteWhabber I agree. "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You" would be a beautiful choice. It's so romantic!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter's mother-in-law just sent me the following. It is from one of George Carlin's writings. I thought it was worth sharing. If you have read it before, please scroll through.
ReplyDeleteOn Aging -
You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone.
But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!
So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.
You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!
You get into your 80's and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; "I Was JUST 92."
Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. "I'm 100 and a half!"
May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

ReplyDeleteTINK: I "kind of" remember Elvis as I was watching through the crib bars to the TV. Ok-Ok....just joking, maybe I wasn't quite that young. I don't exactly remember the day he died but I remember being so surprised. I love the song Can't Help Falling In Love. I would love to go to Graceland sometime. I am not crazy about Lisa Marie too much for some reason. TINK: Very nice blog and tribute to Elvis. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteRENEE EVE: I'll bet it was Elvis that you saw in that car! How exciting.
I once had a red vinyl album and it was Alvin and the Chipmunks (about 45 years ago)! I still have it somewhere.
JODI: Thanks for the phone call and I hope you have a really nice vacation and get lots of rest and some of those projects done you are hoping to do.
FOR BONO: I remember you asking me to be sure and tell you about the weather today...51 and raining..perfect! I thought it did that in Oregon all the time?
TINK: I love your blurb about age, especially the part about turning 4:30! lol Oh, and btw, I think you should call your hairdresser and explain what happened. She might be very worried about you.
ReplyDeleteTammy is feeling a tiny bit better today and got up, showered, ate and then back to bed. I am now trying to get her up for the Olympics, dinner and the Bronco game!! Big night here in Denver! No news from the doctor and that is disappointing as I guess we will now be waiting until Monday.
Boy SHIRLEY, I think this is the first week in a while you haven't been getting everyone wet!! Good girl!
MARY/MI: I have been meaning to ask you....you told me the "money was in the bank" last week and I can't seem to find that Las Vegas deposit anywhere in my account!
I need to go and see what my angels are fighting about right now---
Dianne - I was wondering if you were going to stick to the "peeking through the bars of the crib" story because I was going to "rat you out". (There must be a better way of saying that.)
ReplyDeleteSince both of us like the "Can't help falling in love" song and Bear picks it for his wedding dance, maybe you and I will get invited. Just a thought Bear, Sweetie.
I am so glad Penny is feeling a little better. Each day should show a lot of improvement because we have been praying a lot.
I love that George Carlin write-up too. I tell my mom she is now 96 3/4. She says, "Oh no I am getting old, if this keeps up I will end up in an old age home".
I know I have told that story before. I am getting as bad as my mom for repeating things.
Yikes!!!!!!
Grandma Moses - I sent out "thank you for your comment on my Elvis blog" to all the myspaces pages I have. Since you don't have one I am thanking you here on the blog.
ReplyDeleteI watched "Viva Las Vegas" this afternoon before I had my nap. Ann-Margret sure was cute in 1963. There is real chemistry between them. It shows on screen. Tonight I am going to watch "Blue Hawaii" and "Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii". That should keep me satisfied until his birthday on Jan. 8th.

ReplyDeleteI've been having a very annoying time with my internet homepage and email page. Suddenly yesterday, the print got smaller. No matter what I do, I can't seem to solve the problem. Maybe I should put my own computer on the naughty mat.
ReplyDeleteHi Everyone, and I am hoping you all had a great Saturday!
ReplyDeleteIt has been a tough one here at the DJ and LE household!
Miss Laurie has been very needy, and her left arm (where they implanted the pacemaker) is very sore. So the neded ice packs, etc. I have found that Vicodin makes her totally out of it! I think I will keep the Vicodin for later, and just give Laurie Advil Liquid Gel Capsules. Those seem to do the trick without the weird side effets we we were getting!
I am just so exhausted! Believe me Sleep Is Not Overrated! You lose it, you lose it, no getting it back until you are back to a "normal" routine!
I am sure Dianne will agree!
Anyway, I am Blogging while Sleep Deprived, so please forgive me!
SUNDAY, the day of rest, hopefully it will happen!
Love to you all, and to TINKA, I have two ELVIS favorites, "Can't Help Falling In Love With You", and my very favorite, is the "Hawaiin Wedding Song"
Peace and Love, Donna Jean and Laurie Elizabeth
Donna Jean - My thoughts and prayers are with you tonight. I wish I could be there to give you respite. Will you be getting any help? I sure hope so or else you are going to burn out.
ReplyDeleteThose are two of my favourite songs too. Thanks for commenting.

ReplyDeleteTinka, I just can't stop thinking of Elvis today!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I just can't stop thinking about his pelvis.
I think I need to visit Mr. Iteach. :)
Iteach - Maybe that's exactly what you need. Have fun!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think I am going to call it a night. Thanks every one who commented on my blog today. Tomorrow I will sit back and watch someone else do it. As Carol says it does get easier with practice. Have a great night all owls everywhere. I hope Elvis is singing to my sister tonight.
ReplyDeleteGood Night and God Bless.
Love, Tinka

ReplyDeleteTinka - I enjoyed your blog today. Thank you for sharing your passion for Elvis with us...
ReplyDeleteDianne - glad that Tammy is feeling better.

Wishing a restful night to Donna Jean, Laurie Elizabeth, and Tammy. Dianne_51_Degrees_in_Denver, YOU're on your own! :o)
ReplyDeleteDid you guys see this?? Oh, my....
CAIRO, Egypt (Aug. 16) - A 27-year-old Egyptian woman gave birth to septuplets early Saturday in the coastal city of Alexandria. The newborns, four boys and three girls, weigh between 3.2 pounds and 6.17 pounds and are in stable condition.
Better brace youself, MEK!! Can't wait for swimming to come on here. I was AMAZED that they announced the results hours ago during the SEAHAWK/Bears game on CBS, which btw, turned out to be VERY exciting in OT. I'm thinking JUSTIN FORSETT just made the team, big time!
If anyone hasn't seen this already, it helps explain the new 8th wonder of the world:
(after a 15-second commercial)
THE BODY PHELPS
Dianne, I thought it was him too, but we went 2 years after he died. So with all them Elvis sightings people seen. WHO KNOWS, But I'll tell you it looked JUST LIKE HIM and he was all in black with sunglasses on same lips, I mean I seen him so vividly. So hey maybe he is alive LOL I wouldn't doubt it, seeing he could never go out in public.
ReplyDeleteBono - race was just over here - so you have another hour!!
ReplyDeleteAND - the same thing happened to us earlier in the week while watching baseball - they scrolled the results across the bottom - YIKES!!
Oh my........ what an exhausting week...
Tinka - thanks again for a great blog!!
waving howdy to everyone - I've been gone all day - and have just skimmed the comments!!
Niters!!!
I hope everyone has an excellent Sunday!!
:-)
RENEE EVE: I guess I didn't pay attention that it was after Elvis died (duh on me)!
ReplyDeleteWahoo...Broncos beat the Cowboys. I am sure it was you ZONA in your orange shirt cheering them on. I could almost hear you all the way in Denver...thank you!
Actually, didn't watch much football tonight as the Olympics were much more entertaining! I am going to miss the swimming and Phelps..he sure made it fun to watch.
BONO: I love your pink cloud picture on MS. It is like a painted picture!
TINK: Since you, Bear and I love his wedding song...maybe (just maybe) he will ask us to sing it for him at his wedding!!! MARY/MI could bring her karoke machine. I can just picture it all now~~~~~ And BEAR, there is absolutely no charge--this is our gift to you!
Could this day get any better??
ReplyDeleteThe SEAHAWKS win in OT,
the Womens Marathon was incredible (loved the scenery!),
Dara Torres proves 41 is the new 20,
What more can be said about Phelps?,
and as of 11:30pm here, it's 78 and we're havin' a heck of a thunderstorm. Crossing my fingers we get to the Medal Ceremony before losing power, and praying for rain!
