Unsung Hero's

Thank you to the Unsung Hero’s

Fireman working on the fire

by Goldie

As many of you know the office building next to mine burned down last week. It was a horrific fire that left 2 non- profit businesses without a home and scrambling to provide services to their clients. The fire began during the night, raged with 40 feet flames at times and then flared and smoldered for 2 days.

Twice during the fire and aftermath, I encountered the police and firemen in my office. The first time was an officer asking me if he could use our microwave to heat his lunch, he was starving and had to stay in his patrol car in front of the building. As he stood staring at the container in his hand he said he didn’t have a fork. I did and gave it to him. He thanked me profusely.

The second time was when a fireman came in and said that they needed us to evacuate our just opened parking lot. They needed to bring in heavy equipment to cave in part of the still smoldering building. Would I please go around the building and tell everyone? Of course I would. He thanked me.

However, it should be everyone in my building, who is sending out the huge thank you. We were spared, separated only by a narrow driveway from a burning inferno. The fact that our building was saved from any damage in itself was incredible. Our places of business are intact and we have jobs to go to without the interruption and chaos of trying to rebuild.

There is nothing left but a side door, some bricks, beams and a huge pile of debris from the building next door. Yet the people who lost everything in that building put up a big Thank you to the men and women who risked their well being to fight that fire. On that white door that still stands, in colored markers it says “Thank You MFD” (Madison Fire Dept).

The building that burned down

I am ashamed to say that when that officer and that fireman thanked me- it should have been me who said, “No, thank you and for what you do”. All too often we take for granted that the people doing their jobs are doing just that, doing their job. We forget the risks they take and the impact it can have on our lives.

So, thank you Madison Fire Dept and Madison Police Dept for all you did for us that day and everyday.

I fully intend to make sure in the future that I thank them personally. My son is an EMT – I know that he too does it for the love of his job (it sure isn’t the money) so thank you to him and all EMT’s as well.

Is there someone whom you believe needs to be thanked for his or her work, who often goes as an unsung hero?

  2. I think I have written this before, but it goes with today's topic.

In our community (i think it is the same all over)each day one or another firefighter buys what they make for dinner in the firehouse. As I was checking out at the grocery one day, there was a firefighter behind me. After I was done, I let the firefighter scan his perks card so he could get his perks, then I stood there and paid for his groceries. I told him that it was a golden opportunity to thank him for his service.

Also, when the local police come into the coffee house, we always give them free coffee or drink they want. Whenever they say thank you, I always say NO,thank YOU and I won't let them tip me.

It's a small way to express my thanks to them for all they do to keep me safe and secure.

  3. Good Morning Everyone!

GOLDIE: Thank you for the wonderful blog. Two of my first cousins are married to Police Officers. One works on the gang unit the other is a Sgt...I know how dangerous their jobs are and they know how grateful I am for all they do. I can see the worry in both of my cousins' faces when their spouses go off to work. To them I say thank you too. It has to be incredibly difficult to watch them leave the house to protect all of the rest of us.

Excellent blog GOLDIE... and again, thank you.

  4. Good morning Maureen and congrats on 1st!

    Morning Zona!

Great blog Goldie! You are absolutely right. So many times we take the jobs of the the fire dept. or police dept. for granted until tragedy happens. Then we realize just how important their jobs really are.

In my small home town we have a volunteer fire department. Years ago we had a local police department but that was later replaced by the RCMP.

All the firemen have pagers and when they go off everything else is put on hold. They drop what they are doing and run. My mum's chiminey caught on fire one day and they were there in minutes to put it out. We are very grateful to our local VFD for all they do each time they respond to that pager.

My niece is training to be an RCMP officer. It's a tough and I wish her well.

  7. Morning Glories!

Wohoo Mo got first and she had two beautiful posts!

Goldie It is amazing after seeing the pictures that your building was spared.

I agree that these men and women work so hard and put their lives at risk for us everyday. I always wonder is thank you enough? I realize many of them do their jobs for the love of their job but I do think it is sad that we don't pay these people more for the very important work they do.

I have a list of people who I think should be thanked for doing jobs that many of us just take for granted. Teachers, Nurses, Janitors, Clerks, .....really anyone who does their job well and proudly, deserves a big thank you!!!

I have long maintained that these people are the ones who keep society running. If we did not have them there and working our lives would suffer sorely!

So I am thanking everyone here for the jobs you do and have done in the past because I know in someway in the greater scheme of things it does affect my life.

    Great Blog Goldie!

Shirley did you say Happy Birthday to Ronnie??? Is it her Birthday? How in the world did I miss that?

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY RONNIE!!!!!

Scrishy from yesterday, I am so sorry that the pain is so intense right now! You are not whinning you just came to us for some comfort. I hope you are reading today. I say try the accupuncture! I know some people who swear by it. It may not work but it is worth a shot for some possible pain relief. Thinking about you and sending hugs your way!

  10. Congrats on first, Mo! How awesome of you to pay for the fireman's groceries!

Goldie, thank you for the great blog and for reminding us to thank all of our unsung heroes. And, I'm so glad your building was saved and no one was injured!

Shirley, I'm so glad to hear you're feeling better today!!

    Hi Lynn and Zona!

Is it Ronnie's b-day?? Happy Birthday, Ronnie!

Scirish, don't know if you've already tried a chiropractor but I swear by it! My chiropractor was the only one who made a difference. I spent lots of time in physical therapy, tried different muscle relaxers, etc. and never really got relief. Then a few trips to the chiropractor fixed me right up! Good luck.

Prayers to anyone affected by Gustav and thank you to all those unsung heroes who help the people who are!

I have spoken to Maureen, and she will be checking the blog daily to make sure the blogs publish, they are all on auto publish, however you never know, so each morning she will check, and if a new blog is not up she will publish manually. Which also means if she is first, she is cheating..

Any issues with the blog, e-mail her or myspace msg her and she will be glad to help! Esp with Birdee, as she can sometimes be trouble, so Maureen will know how to cage her up :O)

  19. What a wonderful blog goldie! We have a volunteer fire dept in our little township. I sure wish our residents would give them the $ they need to run an efficient department. They do the best they can and I thank them.

I also want to thank all the young men & women (and older men & women too) who are serving in our nation's military! My son is in the US Navy and I know what sacrifices it takes for our military and their families.

    Congrats on first Mo!

    Happy Birthday Ronnie!

scirish: I'm not sure what is wrong with your back but I'm so sorry you're going through so much pain. Would therapeutic massage help?

  28. Goldie - What a great blog. We sometimes have to be reminded of these brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day. One of my good friends is married to a fireman and she says she just can't dwell on the fact that he is in such a dangerous occupation. It would drive her crazy.

My own experience with Firemen left me in awe of their gentleness and kindness. We always think of their strength and bravery but they are also sensitive and caring. A few years ago my toaster caught on fire. I had 2 extinguishers but I couldn't get either one to work. The fire stopped before the papers, clipped on the fridge, caught fire. I was very shaken by this. I phoned the non-emergency number and asked them about fire extinguishers and explained what had happened. He said he thought they should come and check things out. The next thing I knew there was a huge fire truck in my driveway and 2 gorgeous firemen in my kitchen. They took the toaster outside, shook it out and told me it was now useless. They explained about extinguishers, which ones to buy and how to use them. They saw I was very shaken. They knew I had been in the ambulance the week before because they remembered attending with their truck equipped for heart problems. They took my vitals and my BP was high and my heart rate very fast. They stayed with me about 20 minutes when they suddenly got an emergency call and had to rush off. I thanked them and said, "Good Night" and went to bed. The big surprise of the evening was about 40 minutes later they came back to check on me to make sure I was still okay. I found it unbelievably empathetic. I know if it had been a busy night they would not have come to my house because I did not dial 911. They had the time and they made a senior citizen who lives alone feel very safe and cared for. It also made for a great story to tell my friends and family.

  29. Morning, 'weenie and the owls!

    Sounds like a fabulous 50's do-wop band!

Happy Birthday, Ronnie! And scirish, I sure wish I had some advice, but I've never had disk problems in my back, just muscle pain. I hope someone has experience that they could help you with... maybe Biscy!

Goldie: I couldn't agree more with your observations and appreciation for our firefighters and policemen. Every time I see a funeral for a policeman killed on duty I'm overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and dignity.

I have an idea! Let's put a proposition on the national (sadly, nonexistent) ballot this fall to never spend another tax dollar toward putting people in jail for smoking pot, and instead put the money toward higher salaries and better pension programs for our brave firefighters and policemen!

    ReplyDelete
  30. GOLDIE - Excellent blog!!! It's amazing that your building wasn't burnt down, too. I of course work in a very public place...and I thank the police officers, emt's, and fire fighters that come into the store every chance I get!! I also have quite a few service men & women that shop with us.....and I always thank them, too!!!

MO - Kudos to you in buying the groceries!!! I try to buy them coffee at the store, but for some reason, they're not allowed to take a free beverage while on the clock. So for now, I will continue to give them a smile and a thank you......oh, and congrats on first!!!

Waving a wing at ZONA, SHIRLEY, LYNND, SANDIE, CAROL, DONNA JO, RONNIE (I hope I didn't scare the bejeezus out of you with my birthday message this morning!!!), and TINKA!!!

I just got home from work, and plan on relaxing the rest of my Labor Day. :D

  32. A very dear friend of mine was a fireman for his entire life time from the age of 19 to the age of 56.His nick name was Doc. He lived in an area populated with forests and mountains in VA. The outdoor fires would really take a toll on him trying to contain them. The hoses were heavy, the heat could be intense and the fires could be very dangerous. It truly saddened him at the loss of the firemen on 9/11. He created a wonderful web page filled full of photos and endearing poems in their memory. He went back to work after he mended from open heart surgery. His last year of life he battled cancer. He beat the cancer and the last time I heard from him he had told me he had a staph infection. He was heading back to the hospital. Later I heard from his daughters that he had a massive stroke and didn't make it.Doc spent his entire life fighting fires and trying to save homes and life. He also raised two daughters alone. He was a true hero!

  33. Anyone who is ever trapped in a fire then use your legs or anything you can put your hands on and break through the walls to get out. Sheet rock will break and the bricks will give.

  34. I skimmed comments and here are some solutions that may help disc pain:
    DXR9000 machine
cortizone injections straight into the discs
burning the nerves ( out patient surgery)
    Flector patches
trance pain management ( a specialist triggers the brain to disassociate with the pain)
accupuncture done using the Chinese method (however you must repeat the proceedure every few days and eventually it may work for longer periods)
Disc surgery can always be an option but I would do this as a last resort after having a 3D MRI and using a top notch neurosurgeon instead of an orthopedic surgeon (IMHO)

HOdi: Good afternoon, ma'am! We're taking it easy today too... cutting our hair in preparation for a wedding shoot next weekend, heading to the Castro to pick up some lube (we had to use lotion this morning... yuck!), and maybe to the Lone Star for the farewell Hairrison Bear Street Fair beer bust!

Tink: What a great story! It reminds me that we should spare a thought today for a real-live Vancouver Island Rossblog hero, Bill (Lord Humble). Bill is an EMT with a resume of life-saving stories a mile long!

Most recently, she's stepped smartly up to the plate to answer the mail on getting a study done in our centrifuge facility, which can spin you at up to 6G!

What a wonderful blog today, GOLDIE.

Yes, Firemen/women,Policemen/women and other sevice oriented persons are truly "Unsung Hero's"!! My thanks go out to every single one of them that daily put their lives on the line to protect others!! I stand and applaud loudly to each of you!

Miss Laurie and I are home from our FANTASTIC weekend at the BBQ!! From dinner on Friday night to the final goodbyes at the Hotel on Sunday, what a marvelous time was had by all!

Thank you so much EBJ for opening up your BEAUTIFUL home to us! XOXOXO

EBJ, SSL, and MEK truly outdid themselves in the hospitality department. And thank you too Mr. EBJ! We all were so disappointed that you had to work on Saturday, but that is what "Unsung Hero's" have to do, put aside their own pleasure for the sake of others! I look forward to the next time, when we can get to know each other.

It was so wonderful to meet MARY/MI and her gorgeous niece, RAQUEL, MEK, EBJ, SEASIDE LADY and her beautiful family, OUTATUNE & MR. OUTATUNE, SACBARB (finally) SHARON, WHABBEAR & HUZ, POE the Parrot, and PAULA the sweet kitty! Oh my goodness, I hope I didn't forget anyone! This old brain is still foggy from all the festivities!

Thank you so much OUTATUNE for sending the wonderful pictures so quickly! It was such a treat to look at them when we arrived home, it felt like I was reliving the whole experience!

I sure would like to have the recipe for the delicious beans, if you don't mind! I already tried to replicate SSL's son's Pasta Salad for dinner last night, and Miss Laurie even wanted seconds! And she loved the beans too! So, when you have time, would you please email me the recipe?

MEK (the riot) (LOL, sort of an inside joke), made the most wonderful potato salad, I think it might even rival Jodi's!

Everything was just perfect, the food, the company, the laughs, the hugs! I just can't describe how much Miss Laurie and I enjoyed ourselves!

Safe travels today to MARY, RAQUEL and MEK as they make their way home!

I certainly recommend getting together with fellow Night Owls if the chance arises. I was nervous at first to go, but am so happy I took that Leap of Faith!!! Thank You SSL and SacBarb for the encouragement!

I have'nt even unpacked my suitcase yet, I am being so lazy today, and Laurie is still sleeping!! I am going to spend the whole day resting & catching up on TV shows I have DVR'd, and then BBQ this evening.

May you all enjoy the rest of your weekend,

    Peace and Love,
    Donna Jean & Laurie Elizabeth

  45. Well friends, I come here again to ask for your prayers and good thoughts.

Strange that today, when we're talking about unsung heros, I learn that my cousin, and his wife, were killed over the weekend in a motorcycle accident. He was a 20 yr veteran of the Ashland, KY Police Dept. He wasn't killed in the line of duty but this is a huge loss for their force. I ask that you keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

    Story here:
    http://www.dailyindependent.com/local/local_story_243234615.html?keyword=topstory

Also, please be thinking of my son and DIL, who stopped by here again before heading back to Va Beach today. When they started to leave, their car wouldn't start. We changed the battery, had a mechanic look at it, and we can't figure out what is wrong.

They are just now getting started on their 9 hr+ drive in our van. We borrowed my FIL's car to help us get through the week. We'll have to figure out a time to go get our van back from them and we have to get their car worked on this week. What a mess!!!! I just pray they don't run into any more trouble on their drive home.

  46. Oh, Donna Jo, I am so sorry to hear your sad news. I wish I could wrap my arms around you and try to take away some of the sadness. I will be sending prayers for you and your family.

OR...Ken Kesey's old Merry Prankster bus renovations may finally be completed and we could 'borrow' it! His son's farm, where it decomposed for 30+ years, is just a few miles from me.

I have missed you all and I haven't had time to catch up on the blogs or comments since I have been back home, but I hope to do that tonight, late. 51. OMG, Owls. I just read Lynn D's latest blog, and it really, truly, seriously blew me away. It's all about Sarah Palin and her decision to give birth to her Downs Syndrome child, and wrestles with all kinds of deep questions. Like when, in the development from conception to birth, the state should confer the full protection of the law on the fetus. And why the state should not impose arbitrary legal prescriptions on individuals, but should let them make their own decisions when it comes to family planning.

I am a civil libertarian who believes that the rights and choices of the individual should have precedence over the state, including the area of abortion.

And yet, I recognize supreme ironies in the history of my own family when it comes to that position.

Back in the 50's, my Mom suffered through two failed pregnancies before my older sister and I came along. In one of those cases, the pregnancy was life-threatening, and yet, my Dad had to raise bloody hell with the local Catholic hospital before the hospital board would agree to perform the abortion.

You would think that my Mom would have come out of that experience as a staunch abortion rights supporter.

    The truth is more complicated.

Four years after I was born, in 1962, my Mom unexpectely found herself pregnant again. It was a rough pregnancy (for all of us!), and she has said that if the abortion laws were more liberal in Ontario at the time, she might have considered termination.

Instead, she brought my sister Donna into the world. As things turned out, what with a gay son and an older sister and brother-in-law who decided not to have children, it is that same younger sister Donna who provided her with the only grandchildren in our family.

Reality is a mind-blower, is it not?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I just woke from my nap so my mind isn't clear but the first thing it goes to is Donna's sad news. I feel so bad for you. I pray each night that every one is safe but I guess tragic things continue to happen as long as we have free will. Did a drunk driver run into them? That's what worries me about the holiday weekends. Why don't people learn? My prayers will continue tonight. What a great loss.

VIG - I am ready to go as long as it isn't a holiday weekend. I would love to have the experience that Donna Jean and others just described. Bon'0, Lynn and who else will join us? I know there are more from this area.
By the way, your car is hardly a jalopy. They don't come much newer.

Whabbear - Thank you for mentioning my strange but true story of "My Firemen." Who is Bill? Can I meet him?

A shout out to anyone I have missed today. Hope you are having a fun holiday. I will be back later.

  53. HAPPY LABOR DAY TO EVERYONE!! GOLDIE: I love the blog and try to also remember all the heros in every form. As you all know my son is a Detective, my niece a policewoman currently. My grandfather was a policeman in New York many years ago and my Uncle is a retired Denver Capitain on the force here and I will be sweet and include my ex husband (kid's dad) as a retired Detective as well. It is for sure "all in the family". I also would like to mention people like my dentist that does dental work a day a week for the homeless..there are so many other people that we don't even realize what they do for all of us!

DONNA/HART: I am sorry about your family's loss. I am sending big hugs to you and all of your family.

    ReplyDelete
  54. HAPPY BIRTHDAY RONNIE!!! I hope you are doing something really fun today (like fishing) for your celebration!! I also hope you are safe and sound and dry..I guess you wouldn't pick fishing today now that I think about it. Maybe you are just visiting with your fisher friend and family. Enjoy your day.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hartldo...so sorry for your loss! Thoughts and prayers to you and yours!

    ReplyDelete
  56. reaching for that goal...

  57. 69 all by myself...interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Tink...maybe we will have to have both the Bessie Express and the NanaWagon go in a convoy to the BABB next year if there are more coming. Wouldn't that be fun!!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Tinka: No, there wasn't any alcohol involved in that motorcycle accident. Authorities think that their rear tire blew and they hit a guardrail.

I don't want everyone to feel bad for me. I wasn't close to this cousin of mine. He was a 3rd cousin and we haven't seen each other since we were teens. I just wanted to mention it here because of the subject today, and I knew so many of you would pray for the families. It saddens me for them. I know they are going through such a great loss right now. They've lost TWO people at once. My mom is pretty upset by it all, and I hate to see her hurting in any way.

I can't stop dwelling on my son and DIL still driving to Va Beach. They would've been there by now if they would've gotten on the road when they planned today.

One would think with all the bad luck they've had already on this trip, things would start looking up. I hope that will be the case, but it doesn't stop a mother from worrying. They've got a long drive ahead.

I wanted to take them to Columbus (about 2 hrs away) to the airport to catch a flight back, but my son didn't want to do that.

He has to be at work at 7:30 in the morning. He said there was no way of getting out of it. The Navy just wouldn't understand.

I worry about him being so tired, but I guess you can handle it when you're young.

I suppose worrying isn't helping a damn thing, is it?

  60. DONNA JO - So sorry for your loss. ((((HUGS)))) to you and your family.

WHABBY - Sorry.....I call em as I see em!!! I guess if they had more sun....I wouldn't have thought about chicken legs!!! lol!!

  61. VIG - Congrats on 69....was it good for you?!!? And so great to talk to you again before work this morning!! Just the thing to start my day off right. :D

  62. Goldie~ fantastic blog and perfect day for it~ I love me some firesmen~ yum-yum~ My uncle is a retired Policeman, my cousin is also a policeman and my cousin-in-law is a Lieutenant for the Sherrif's dept. (how he got promoted is beyond me....he's such a goof!) But I really respect the work that they do. I also am thankful for the job that teachers and principals do for our children. So often I see parents who think that their children should be taught their morals and manners and be disciplined by the teachers/principal. It's unreal, and these people are so underpaid!

    MoHo~ congrats on first~

    Ronnie~ one more time....happy birthday to your Tex-ass! :D

Zona~ get out of the pool! :)~ oh....and September, right? :D

Whabbear~ thanks for the headsup on Lynn's blog~

LynnD~ i hope you still love me (she says ducking!)

Hart~ your fam is in my prayers~

  63. Donna - I do feel sorry for you, you have the worry of your son and then this bad news. If your mom is hurting then you are hurting too. What a tragedy that the tire blew. There are such freak accidents that happen. My mind first went to MADD but I know there are other reasons as well. Let us know when your son gets home.

VIG - I forgot to mention that we have to get Zona there too. I can't go if my daughter doesn't go. We have a lot of arranging to do. How about Linda in S? She wanted to come here this year.

Bear - Your last post was mind blowing. Sure gives one "pause to think".

  64. Firefighter........

Watched my late boyfriend go through many of the heartaches of a firefighter. I'm so glad that our town finally has consuling options for them.

Even though he died by sucide, the national firefighters assocaition stated that he still died in the line of work.

  65. Donna- I am so sorry about your cousin.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I read Lynn's blog and I also thought it was very good.

I also read Tina's comment and thought it was beautiful too.

It is going to be so hard for me in the next few months to keep my emotions in check and I hope everyone will be patient with me.

I need to remember to keep taking deep breaths.

  67. Hi Everyone!

Whabby yes that article is a mind blower isn't it? Still has me thinking! Thank you for taking the time to read it. I posted it on MS because it is some heavy and controversial reading.

Donna: I am so sorry for your families loss. Tell you Mom I am sending prayers for her and a hug. I will also send up a quick reminder for your son and DIL to have a safe trip home! We never do stop worrying do we?

Tina why in the world would I be mad at you? You stated your opinion respectfully and politely. I only admire that. Thank you for taking the time to comment. (((Hugs)))

I hope everyone is getting home and settled in from the BBQ! It really does sound like you all had a great time.

    Welcome Back!!!!

Vig, Bono I am ready to start our caravan. I will start saving some vintage sheet music for the trip. Hmmmm I wonder if I have one hundred bottles of Tequila on the Wall?

Hope you are all having a great evening!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Donna, so sorry to hear of your loss. So tragic. I'm sure your son and DIL will be home soon--let us know!

iteach, we will be here for you!

Tinka, I loved your firemen story. That's so awesome.

Hey! Who is near me to caravan to the BBAB?? I think I'm down here in GA all by my lonesome, aren't I? :(

    ReplyDelete
  69. Bear: What a story! Now I must go read Lynn's blog.

Just got a call from my son. He's somewhere in WV and loves our van so much that he wants to keep it. NOT an option.

He sounded in much better spirits and thanked me over and over and over for the use of the van and the gas card we loaned them.

Not many of you know about the fall-out I had with him last November. It was a horrible time for me. I thought he didn't love me and wanted me out of his life. I think he thought the same thing. But lately he's seeing that he needs his mom. He is learning to appreciate me more. If only he understood that I would do ANYTHING for him! I guess it's all part of the growing up process. I never understood my mother's love for me either, until I was an adult.

I know it's a personal thing, but if some of you would be so kind to share with me what it was like when your children first left YOUR nest, I'd sure appreciate it.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Donna, I told my husband the other day that I hope our children never leave the nest.

He then looked at me like I was totally crazy.

    Is it easier for men?

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think it's easier for most men to see their children leave. But maybe not their daughters.

My son was talking this weekend about how much he misses this area. Then my DIL told me privately that my son really misses home and doesn't even want to go back to Virginia, but knows he has to. When I was telling my husband this later, Mr. Hart got all teary-eyed and said, "You never know what ya got 'til it's gone."

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hello Hooter!

Thank you all so much for your nice comments on my blog. I appreciate them. My dad was a volunteer fire fighter, so I think that makes me reflect on the job more.

    Ronnie - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

I'm so glad to hear the BBQ was a resounding success. I have no doubt that MEK was a riot either. Wish I could have joined you all.

Hart- sorry about your cousin, and your worries about your son. I did know about your strained relationship and the heartache it caused you. I am so very happy that things have worked themselves out!

Iteach- I think Mr. Goldie has a much harder time when the boys left, especially the youngest.

I have to go read Lynn's blog and catch up from the weekend on the other blogs. BBL

    ReplyDelete
  73. That was supposed to be HELLO HOOTERS! Each and every one of you!!

  74. Donna, my son is in college so not completely gone yet but I can tell you that I still miss him but also love seeing him grow up and mature. And, I saw it with him and now I'm seeing it with my second son, they can be so obnoxious when they are seniors in high school that I believe it's God's way of helping us parents break the tie and let them go. LOL! My college son appreciates me so much more now, too. He's still Momma's boy--shhhh--don't tell him that!

I saw Mamma Mia today! Loved it!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Hartldo I'm sorry to hear about your cousin and his wife. ((((HUGS))))

I have just been speaking with my sister on the phone. Her son (first born...24 yrs old) is leaving tomorrow to travel to British Columbia where he will be going to a bible school. This is the first time he has moved away and she is a mess. She knows in her head that he will be fine but her heart is telling her to grab him and not let go. She has already gone through his baby book and all the school stuff she saved and the baby pictures. I'll call her tomorrow evening and see how she is doing.

    ReplyDelete
  76. WOW, Donna~~If you were looking for a blog topic, I think you just hit on one! I think most of us could go on for days about the 'Leaving the Nest' experience, our own departures, and those of our offspring.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Sandie: I have thought the same thing....about it being God's way of preparing us for our children leaving the nest.

My son left on such bad terms. He made me so angry. Then he hurt me terribly. I think it was the only way for me to let go though. Maybe it was the only way he felt he could break free. It's all good now, but that hurt will never be forgotten.

For those of you who don't know the whole story, here's the short version....

He got married. Her parents were there. We were not.

I'm now beginning to think that her parents are the ones who orchestrated that whole mess. I still think my son could've handled it better but he is young and stupid. I have to forgive him for that.

But her parents did us wrong in this whole thing. They've been forgiven as well, but something very fishy is happening with them.

See, we've had four opportunities now to meet them. Each time, something has happened to cancel the meeting. We were supposed to get together with them this weekend but my DIL got a call on Saturday evening from her mom and she said the dad was sick (throwing up like mad). So, our dinner plans and breakfast plans were shot.

Well, I asked my DIL today how her dad was and she told me he had bad allergies. So do I, but I don't throw up like mad because of them! I asked, "Allergies made him keep throwing up?!?" She changed the subject. I later asked my son the same thing, when his wife wasn't around, and he just rolled his eyes and said nothing.

Mr. Hart said those are either the rudest people on earth or one of them has such a terrible social phobia that it keeps them from functioning! I wish they'd quit making plans and then canceling them. I'd rather not even try anymore! I have a feeling THEY are the reason we were not a part of the wedding. I have such a negative feeling about them now that I am afraid to meet them! I know Mr. Hart won't be friendly.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Awwww Shirley. I feel bad for your sister. Getting the baby book and school things out was not a good idea though.

    ReplyDelete
  79. bon'o: You're right. I thought of that after I asked for all of your input on the subject of our children leaving the nest. It's just heavy on my heart tonight.

I felt so bad for my son today when he was having car trouble. I know they can't afford to have the car repaired. His temper was wearing thin and he was snapping at his wife. I felt bad for both of them. REAL LIFE was hitting them right in the face and it was hard for me to watch. I just wanted to say, "Just stay here. We'll take care of you!" But that wasn't possible. He chose a career in the Navy and the Navy isn't going to understand, OR CARE, about any of this. We HAD to get him back to Virginia tonight!

There was a part of me that was thinking, "I told you so", but I would never say that. I don't even want to say that! I don't want to feel it! I don't want to be right! I want things to go perfectly for him.

He regrets his decision to move away. He regrets his decision to join the Navy. His dad has always given him good advice on cars, but he never takes that advice. Now look at the piece of crap he has!

He knew we thought he was rushing into marriage. I know he loves this girl but I can tell he misses being a free, young man. He left her here with us Saturday night while he went out with old friends.

He knew we were upset by his decision to drop out of college and now he wishes he was there with all his friends. He could be living at home for free and not have much at all to worry about.

I have every reason to be an "I told you so" but it pains me to see him unhappy. All I've ever wanted for him is to be happy.

Sorry about ramblling on and on. This is helping me, even if it is boring all of you to tears.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Hartldo I'm not bored to tears. I just don't have any words of wisdom to offer you. I didn't have any for my sister either when she just called be back a little while ago. I have never had children so I don't know how seeing them leave home feels. I know how I felt when I left home.

I was basicly living in my car for two months before I found a low rental apartment. My younger sister and I had an arguement the day after christmas. I packed clothes and left. Mum had taken her side in the arguement, which was typical for mum. I slept in my car for two night but it was just too cold to continue that so I went home. I left at 5 in the morning and came home late at night to sleep. I finally moved out on Valentines day. I went in to mum and said,"Well that's the last of it. I'm going now." She never said a word. So I left.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Well Friends, I'm going to try to get some rest. I have to be up in less than 8 hrs for work. I will leave the phone by my bed so I'll know when my son gets home. He promised to call, no matter what time it was. I used to think that was so stupid when my mom would ask me to call. I completely get it now.

Shirley: I just read your post. That must've been a very difficult time for you. Have you and your mum ever talked about that situation since then?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Not at all boring, Donna, and I know EXACTLY how you feel.

Parents (ok, Moms especially) are often the ultimate unsung heroes! It's always a tightrope walk....to be both friend and parent, to help without enabling, to let them fly free when you know they'll crash and burn, to "trust but verify", to be supportive but not a crutch, to say "No!" when every fiber of your being wants to say "Hell, yes, let me (fill in the blank)".

It's the ultimate case of "If you love someone, let them go. If they come back, they're yours. If not, they never were." And they DO come back, and reward your hard judgment calls many times over. And if you're really lucky they don't LITERALLY come back....at least not to stay! lol

    ReplyDelete
  83. Wow bon'o, thanks! It's awesome how this blog ended for me this way. You're so right....Parents ARE unsung heroes!!!!!

Shirley- I'm sorry that happened to you. But don't ever doubt that you no words of wisdom to give. You give plenty - as well as wit and joy (not to mention those pesky water balloons!)

Good night everyone- long weekend and time to go to bed, I'm pooped!
Thank you again for your thoughts on the blog today and thanks to Carol for putting it up. :)

  90. To go along with a blog from the other day....
Mr. Hart took a lot of his "stuff" to a local flea market today and made $537! He also got a sunburn. He's beat. He's been in bed for quite some time. Nothing happy will be happening in there tonight!

  91. Good Evening!

RONNIE...I am such an ass...I didn't realize your B-day was today. I knew it was Monday, but was convinced today was Sunday. Soooo sorry. I hope you had a FANFREAKINGTASTIC day. You deserve the very best of everything. Did you get any "flowers"? LOL!!

HARTLDO...you are only 2 hours from Columbus? I am only 2.5 hours...maybe we can meet up one day.
I hope your son and DIL get home safe and sound.

CAROL...how do you know I won't encourage BIRDEE to run amok here while you're away????? bwahahahah!

HODI...sorry I missed your call. By the time I was able to call you back, you would have been fast asleep.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Aw, Carol, thanks but ya gotta understand that "my two cents worth" is just the result of a few years a couple decades ago when my own daughter might have thought I was worth about that much in the grand scheme of her life as the 'princess of quite a lot'. Amazingly, my stock rose exponentially in her 20's and when she became a mom!

Sweet dreams Goldie & Donna, and Howdy MO! Grats on #1 & 2 today and thanks for reminding me to wish Ronnie a Happy Birthday in case she stops in here before MS.

Time for me to run. See ya tomorrow!

  98. Flying by to say HI, then back to finishing laundry and getting ready for another work week. Sorry in advance for the long post.

Donna Jo, to answer your question about the pictures, they were taken with a Nikon D70 and a Nikor 18-55mm lens. I was sorry to hear about your cousin and his wife and am sending up prayers of comfort for his family.

Scirish, do I remember correctly that you once said you suffer from Fibromyalgia? If so, I can soooo relate. I've been lucky to have had some respite from my pain levels for a few years now but between Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia I was completely bedridden in 1999/2000 and again in 2002-2004. What has worked for me is to eat a high protein/low carbohydrate diet (too much sugar and refined carbs over and extended period increases my inflammation levels), avoid caffeine/stay hydrated (except for special events and my weekend chai lattes, I only drink water), adaptive yoga classes (haven't done it in awhile but it was a tremendous help), and seeing a chiropractor regularly for about a year helped me give up all prescription-strength pain relievers.

When the pain gets intense, the worst being across my shoulders and middle back, I use a product called BioFreeze that I can get on ebay and from my chiropractor. Walmart carries a similar product called Freeze It, I think. I have a friend who uses acupuncture and says it has been extremely helpful for her. The breathing and visualization from the yoga classes helped me a lot. I went to a class offered by our community college that was designed for people with disabilities. I've read enough CFIDS and FMS boards to know that what works for some doesn't work for everyone but I hope you can find some relief soon.

On the subject of the empty nest, our last chick is flying off this week to start a new job several states away. He will be closer to the bulk of my family and in the same town as my oldest son, which is a comfort, but it's still hard to think of him leaving. He's been very independent and we've had basically an email/cell phone relationship for the last couple of years anyway (he's 23) so I'm not sure things in the house will be that much different except for not seeing his car in the driveway. That might be hard at first.

On heroes, a hero to me is anyone who selflessly goes out of their way to make the world a little better for others. Many public servants, firemen, law officers, teachers, and even some IRS employees fit into this category.

As corny as it may sound, my husband, family, and friends are also my heroes because without them, I don't know how I would have survived the tough years. I find myself thanking them often and hope I never take them for granted during those times when life is running smoothly.

Have a great week all! I hope I get some time to check in now and then. Friday morning I'm having a tooth extracted (failed root canal aaaaalllll the waaaayyy in the back). I'm opting for sedation but still pretty nervous about the procedure. Maybe it's just the name, oral SURGERY that scares me. Geez, I've survived much worse than this ... when did I become such a wuss?!!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Shirley and Mo:
My ears are free of wax, I hear you both very loud and clear, and all I have to say is....

Can't ya wait till I get back to bring the male strippers...

  102. Back with a quick question: Anyone else's MS acting funky today?

I get notices of new blogs posted, but the actual blog doesn't show up on my 'friend updates' til much later.

Also had a 'new friend request' today, but when I clicked on it to go to the approve/deny page, there was nothing there. Somebody's going to think I'm ignoring them, but I have no idea whom. Any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
  103. Bon:
MS was a little slow for me tonite, I had to click on everything twice.

Not sure about the friends request, maybe its "Tom" teasing ya!

    ReplyDelete
  104. CAROL....damn...I wanted that one, too ;(

But since it is a gift for ya, you can have him. See, I really am a giver!

    ReplyDelete
  105. BON'O...yes, MS is a little funky tonight. I get notices that I have new messages and I really don't. Oh well...Tom must be bored or something

    ReplyDelete
  106. Mo:
You can have the "Fabio" look a like, or you can give him to Shirley, or you can share, either way is fine with me...

    ReplyDelete
  107. I am tired, so I am off to bed...

i will take the "one top right" with me, at least I will have sweet dreams...

    ReplyDelete
  112. I see SHIRLEY is getting ready to cause mischief again! I hope these strippers your are bringing are pretty young but not babies! :) (young to me is 40)!!! I don't think I will be picking the stripper teacher since I live with one of those...although he is much older than 40! In my younger life, I used to like Fireman and Marines...maybe I will see if I still have the old pizzaz (sp) .

Welcome home MEK and all the other traveling owls.
