Movie vs. The Book

by MEK

As some of you know by now, I NEVER read books just to read a book. About four weeks ago, I knew the movie “Nights in Rodanthe” was coming to a theater near me!! I was SO excited, cuz I just LOVE Richard Gere!!! He and Diane Lane had been in several movies together before, and I just knew this was going to be another wonderful, romantic movie that I would want to watch over and over again….

I was at my mother’s house and noticed that she had the book – I pulled it off the shelf and noticed the other books around it - Message in a Bottle, The Notebook, A Walk to Remember and several others – I got excited, cuz I had seen all those movies and had NO idea they were all written by the same person – let alone, the gorgeous man on the back cover……. So, I decided to read the book.

As I started reading, I envisioned Richard Gere and melted away in this romantic setting and fell in love with both of the characters. It was after midnight, I knew I had to be up before 6a.m., but I was NOT going to put that book down until I was finished – I only had thirty pages to go…….. When I finished the book – I was literally bawling my eyes out – it was SO sad. The first thing I said to my mother was, I sure hope reading the book doesn’t ruin the movie for me. My heart ached for days after finishing the book.

Fast forward to Thursday afternoon – I took my mother to see “Nights in Rodanthe”. Not five minutes into the movie – it was ruined. They messed up my love story – my fantasy – don’t get me wrong – the movie was good. I will probably watch it again when it comes out on cable. Yes, Richard Gere still looks AMAZING in blue jeans. But it was such a disappointment for me. If you haven’t watched it yet, I won’t ruin it for you.
I had thought about reading the other books on my mother’s shelves, but will I be disappointed in ALL of the love stories that I have grown to know?

So, my question to you all, have you ever read a book and then been disappointed in the outcome of the movie – or vice versa, the movie was WAY better than the book?

  3. As many of you know, I am a huge Harry Potter fan. I have read all the books (twice!!!) and have seen all the movies several times. I am not so bothered that they don't stay totally true to the books.....how could they? The last book alone would probably take at least 10 hours to make into a movie. I tend to take it for what it is.....I love both equally. And can appreciate them for what they are.

MEK - I love all the Nicholas Sparks books!!! What amazing love stories that come out of a man that is about my age!!! I'm going to have to pull them back out and re-read Nights in Rodanthe. But I think my all time favorite is The Notebook, and the follow-up The Wedding. I also really like his book Three Weeks with my Brother.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. It looks like I have some catching up to do!!!

  5. MEK...sorry you were disappointed in the movie. I hope to see it, even if it sucks, so I can stare at Richard Gere for a couple of hours!

I think that a lot of movies that are based on books leave us wanting more. But I think it is because when we read a book, we have time to savor the characters and imagine the surroundings to be perfect...since the visuals are in our heads, they are the way we want them to be. Then the movie has to re-create the images we imagined and that is not possible.

This isn't based on any actual scientific studies...just my slightly skewered brain!

    Thanks for the blog!

LYNN D...I really wanted to comment on your blog yesterday, but it seemed I was at a loss for all written word. You're so passionate and compassionate. I agree that this is a very scary time and it feels like we are taking so many steps backwards. I thought that by 2008 we would be beyond the racism, bigotries and anti-semetism. Now more then ever is the time when we need to come together...not be split apart for such slanderous and ignorant campaign tactics. The issues should be the issue. The future and preserving our country...not turning it into a mockery. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings in such a heartfelt and meaningful blog. {{{hugs}}} to you my dear friend.

    Mek, great blog!!!

    Hi, Mo!

I love John Grisham and enjoyed the movies they have made out of his book's. I think they have picked appropiate actor's to play his character's.

Ok, I simply MUST get some coffee.

  15. I like Richard G. too, but I think the one movie he did that was disappointing for me was the one with Winona Ryder. Don't remember the name.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Mo, same here, I've never read or seen anything about Harry Potter.

  17. Good Morning Everyone!!

MEK: I love to read mysteries...so the only problem I usually encounter with a book that's been turned into a movie is that I always know who the murderer is!! I have to struggle not to tell, so others can enjoy the movie.

I loved reading "Red Dragon" by Thomas Harris in 1981..it scared the crap out of me. I thought the plot was perfect..and the name of the villian, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, was just wonderfully evil. The movie came out 1986 and was equally creepy...but I liked the book better.

Then the sequel came out. "The Silence of the Lambs"...OMG..book and movie...absolute perfection. I loved them both.

I think reading the book sometimes helps me understand the characters better, and I find I can enjoy the movie a little more. And since I know when all the scary stuff is gonna happen...I can be ready to cover my eyes!! :)

    Great blog MEK!! Thank you!

  18. BTW, Love Emmy Lou's Hair.

Why can't mine look that good going gray?
I saw a interview she did right after her hair went all gray and they asked if she colored it. Well, of course she didn't! Her brown hair actually stayed soft and came in the perfect color of gray! I've been upset with her ever since! ;o)

  19. MEK, very good blog.

Hubby and I loved the Lord of the Ring's movies. We watched all three at the theater and we also bought the movies.

So then I thought to myself, "Since I love them so much why don't I read the book."

The book was way too complicated for me. My pea size brain could not sort out all the big words that the author used.

  25. Yes, he did. It is for a company in Canada. I think it is called Johnson and Johnson. He will get to work mostly from home. The pay is outstanding, but it is only for six weeks.

However, we are hoping it will lead to more work.

    ReplyDelete
  26. JODI: Congrats on FIRST!! I missed you!! :D I love the Harry Potter books too...and I understand that time constraints keep them from putting everything into the movie, but I still find myself wishing they could!

MO: I agree with you 100%...the book lets your imagination run wild..whereas the movie might not quite measure up to what you've envisioned.

BIRDEE: I am not a big Richard Gere fan...mostly cuz my brother kinda looks like him. I try to see past that..but sometimes I can't.

OK..lots to do today..ugh..lol...have a great day everyone!!

  27. Morning Glories!

    Yay Hodi is back!

    MEK great blog!

I am in the book is always better catagory. My mind is so visual when I am reading that I see the whole story and get totally wrapped up in all of the nuances the written word offers.

When they translate the book into a movie somehow they lose so much. I realize that trying to get all of it into a 2 hour film medium is very difficult and it is fun to see it recreated, they just somehow never do the story the full justice it deserves.

The only movie I have seen that I thought came very close to the book was Schindlers list. Speilberg did a masterful job of bringing that true story to life.

Ok now I am going to read the comments.

  28. BIRDEE: HI! I be slooooow...I started typing at 19 and we're at 29..pass me some caffeine please!!

  29. HI LYNND! I have never read Schindler's List..but saw the movie. I cried my eyes out.

  30. Mo: Thank you for your beautiful words this morning. I so agree with everything you said.

Jodi: I have read the Harry Potter books up the 4th one. I have seen the movies and they do a great job of bringing the magic to life.

Birdee: I have read many Grisham books and have a few of his 1st editions, but I got burned out on him and have not read many of his new ones. Maybe I need to go back and try one.

Zona: I love mysteries! I do the same thing when Mr. Lynn D and I go to the movies I usually guess who dun it! It drives him crazy! LOL Silence of the lambs was very good on film.

Iteach: Congrats to Hubby! We have all of the Lord of the rings movies too! Mr. Lynn D loves them. I enjoy the movies but had a really hard time with the books.

Good Morning size 18 Bebbi! Congrats to you!

  31. HI Lynn!

    Zona, caffeine coming your way....

Iteach, I hope the job turn's into more work for hubby too!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Zona: Schindlers list, the book is excellent but a little hard to get through because the author has a lot of facts and figures from that time. So I had to read it very carefully to get the full meaning of the history he was sharing. Still it was one of the most moving stories I have ever read.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Lynn, I have a couple more of Grishams' book's too that I have not read yet. But, I just got burned out on reading in general. My bad! Maybe I'll crack one open this weekend, because I really do enjoy it. It is relaxing.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Morning All!

MEK...What an interesting blog! I find that I almost always like the book better. I think it's because I almost always read the book first! The one time I saw the movie first (The Notebook) I liked the movie better. I think it is because whatever impressions are in our mind first prevail and we make unfavorable comparisons if those impressions are not the ones the author or filmmaker has.

Does this even make sense???? I think I need more coffee!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Welcome back Jodi!!

iteach....Congrats to Hubby! Will cross fingers and toes that the job turns into even more work!

    ReplyDelete
  36. SCIRISH...makes perfect sense to me!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Good morning all

Wanted to be first, but that became a joke, after having a computer that wouldn't cooperate this morning.

MEK, Great blog! I haven't seen Rodanthe yet, but hope to do so soon. Btw, if Richard Gere was in a cartoon, I'd want to go see it.

I'm a John Grisham fan and thoroughly enjoyed The Pelican Brief. I guess my most favorite of his work is The Firm. The movie wasn't near as good as the book, and was a little too generalized.

I also enjoyed his book the Pelican Brief, and I wasn't disappointed with the movie. Denzel Washington was fantastic.

I read a few years ago that Grisham was an attorney at one time practicing in the South, and I guess this has inspired many of his works. I enjoyed The Chambers, too, but didn't get to see the movie.

My most favorite reading is Biographical. I always feel like I've met so many of the people that I've read about, sometimes giving me a different view of their character, personalities, and of course their actions which brought their name into the public arena.

    Congrats Jodi on #1
I'm glad you are back in the nest again. Being without a computer for a week can really make for a clean house, though. Ha!

Zona, I'm coming to your house for Thanksgiving to meet you ,"Richard". I always thought my brother was handsome, but he's no Richard Gere. Ha!

  49. Good Afternoon Everyone,

Jodi, Don't you feel so out of touch with EVERYTHING when you don't have your computer??? What did we do 20 years ago when there was no internet, I bet Moms got a lot of work done LOL. Glad you got yours fixed.

Good Day to Everyone, I'm stopping in to say HI, John and I are married 22 years today we got married at 8:30 am, I was only 20, it was so nice last night because my mom and I and my kids, while John was sleeping was talking about the night before my wedding, my BOYS yes BOYS (I only thought daughters would of liked it) enjoyed it so much, how my mom threw John out of the house at 11:30 pm and How my cousin Victor who passed away in Jan. 1994 was making us laugh because he was trying to sleep and no one could sleep in our house LOL.

We are taking the kids, and my mom, to the movies and to dinner.
The kids want to be with us this year, but I think what our family has been through the last couple of weeks (things are calming down) its good to spend time as a family.

    Have a good day everyone.

Mek I also love Richard Gere, I have not seen this movie yet, but I will. I loved Officer and a Gentleman. I was a Senior in High School when I seen it LOL

Zona I read Red Dragon back then, too, and LOVED it. They made it into a movie called "Manhunter". Did you see it? Of course, back then no one yet knew the name Hannibal Lector.

MEK Excellent blog today. Thank you! There was actually one movie that I thought was better than the book but I can't remember what it was. Usually, if it is a good and masterful writer, we can get so immersed in the characters because we are privy to their thoughts and inner feelings. Movies just can't go that deep.

MEK, good blog and I just saw the movie last week too. I have never read any of his books but I think I am going to get some and start reading them. 84. I have a question of the day, what and where is the QOTD?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Is that QUOTE of the day?? sheesh..is that the thing on the nest that is over to the right every day?

    ReplyDelete
  86. You know, Shirley hasn't been online on myspace since October 4th. I am really getting worried too.

    ReplyDelete
  87. LOL! The nest is funny today!

Dianne and like-minded owls: I strongly recommend the Potter books, even if you don't think they would be your cup of tea. They're seriously a delight, well written, well plotted, and the characters are beguiling.

I've read all the books before seeing the films, and find that I enjoy the movies hugely anyway.

OK, the one book/movie combo where you absolutely have to read the book is 2001: A Space Odyssey. I don't know why Stanley Kubrick elected to create a film that is completely incomprehensible, when there's actually a coherent plot lurking behind all those stunning visuals at the end of the film, but he did. Result: You have to read the book to understand the movie!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Bebbi Yes, it is the Quote Of The Day seen to the right of the daily blog. :)

Shirley, Shirley, Bo Birley Please don't make me do the whole damn song. :(

Some of you owls have found my sore arm to be useful in justifying your own lazy day. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  89. Ha!

    Nana's here!

    How was work, Mo?

J/L, Sorry about your sore arm. Do you think maybe it had become weak from your last trip to see Custard, and now the shot did you in?

    ReplyDelete
  90. I sure could use a snack. Going to go make myself an ice cream cone.

I hear ice cream goes well with bacon. lol

    SHIRLEYYYYYYYYYYY,

    Mo~ YES!!! SNOW!!!! CRAP!!! (the snow didn't crap...i did!)~

    J/L~ I accidentally used your arm....just woke up from a nap~ :D

    ReplyDelete
  92. Hey Ti~ lol

Here's your ice cream cone with chopped pecans on top. Better lick fast before it drips all over J/L's sore arm.

I'm sure you can do that!!!

    bb in a bit..

    ReplyDelete
  93. Tina Uh, you accidentally used my arm as an excuse for your nap? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  94. Ronnie Could you wait until Tina let's go of my arm before you give her that ice cream cone? I don't want any licking and dripping next to it. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  95. RONNIE...ran my ass off. feet and legs are hurtin'. I think some ice cream would make me feel better **hint hint**

    ReplyDelete
  96. Dinner time! I made myself a nice salad and 1/2 batch of spaghetti. BBL

    ReplyDelete
  97. Ice cream for J/L and Mo coming up. I'll even put a maraschino cherry on top. Do you ladies remember what a cherry is?

Mo, sorry you ran your ass off. Lynn, Sorry about your arm. I think Tina needs to put some ice on it, since she layed on it.

Seems to be a pattern here.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Well, I guess I shut this place down....again.

    I'll Check back later.

Don't leave this ice cream laying here on my desk.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Jeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...I just walked 20,100 steps! Phew, I am TIRED! Those last few really didn't go by very fast. I probably looked pretty silly cause the last 3500 was walking around my cul-de-sac. hehe. 3rd time ever since June that I have walked over 20,000 in a day! woot woot. :)

    ReplyDelete
  100. ronnie~ thanks for the ice cream~ I licked it all up~ I didn't need a cherry tho....i have one~

  104. good Evening, everyone..

we have had one heck of a day weather wise..... goodness..

lost two tree branches in the backyard due to the wind... heavy rain......

Zona - sorry, but the weather track went East down I-10!!

Iteach- i thought GW was better last night than last week, but still not up to it's great standard - I think we are in for a LONG season!! (sadly)..

I want to thank everyone for sharing their thoughts today.. I agree that reading the book lets you "go places" - that movies just don't have the time to take you.. but this one, just left out SO many important things and changed others that made the movie make no sense - if that makes sense...

I guess the moral to my blog, is that I need to read more!!! LOL..

    :-)

    hugs to all!!!!!!

now - I see we have ice cream tonight!!!
    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  105. Iteach:

  106. Hey to all the Hooters...

I had a long nite... Church was amazing.. It is Columbus Day on Monday and each Columbus Day we have parades in several of our near by towns. Each year, Italian Police are brought over from Italy to march in the parades. They were at church tonite, as the mass was in celebration of them being here.. They were very handsome...

The mass was said in Italian and English.. It was beautiful...

Columbus was Italian, so all my near by towns, get out the Italian flags, The Italian feast foods, The Italian singers etc etc etc... So fun!!!

I am not going to any parades tomorrow tho, as I have gone to them for many years, and well, they kinda all start looking the same. I think as a Adult, its just has fun when one is a child..

Wow I think this is long...

    ReplyDelete
  107. Lets try this again...

"I think as a Adult, its just not as interesting when one is a child"

    ReplyDelete
  108. Zona - wouldn't it suck if your mysteries changed "who done it" in the movies??!!

Scirish - your comment made perfect sense......

Lynn and Just Lin - I agree about the movie not being able to give the book full justice...

MO - I did enjoy letting my imagination go while reading this book - especially picturing Richard Gere in the part!!

Sandie - I've decided that I WILL read his other books - heck, my mom has them ALL on her shelf - i guess he has another one coming out soon.......

Jodi - I think I will re-read "Nights" already - cuz I want to remember the book after just seeing the movie!! :-)

Birdee - I love Emily Lou also!!!

Ronnie - usually the only books that I do read are autobiographies and bio's......

    Renee Eve- happy anniversary..

Bebbi - congrats on all your steps.

Dianne - you really DO need to read the book and then we can discuss the differences - you will understand WHY I was disappointed.

mary - hope you found the book - I know Target has the paperback..

whabby - we watched LOTS of college football today also!!
    :-)

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    :O)

    ReplyDelete
  122. Tina:
Actually, the alien only had four fingers, so would the last finger be the pinky, or would the last finger be the ring finger????

So if the last finger is the ring finger, than I "ring swore"

Tried, without success, to recall any recent book vs. movie combos. LOVE books, movies usually disappoint. Exceptions are a movie that makes me laugh 'til I cry, or vice versa.
