November is a big celebration month in my family. Last Sunday we had my grandpa's 86th birthday. Then my daughter Carolyn is celebrating her birthday today the 13th and my son Matthew on the 16th. Finally our anniversary on the 24th. Therefore, we will be a little busy this month. :)
I always said that I wanted my children to have their own birthday month. I remember my friends complaining about having to share birthdays with their siblings. It was my plan to give them each their own month, but it didn't turn out that way. Our third was a little bit of a surprise, because we were only thinking about having a third.
So on the 8th we had a shared birthday party with our youngest two. It really is so much easier to do just one party. I plan to keep it that way until one of them complains.
As I planned for their party, I think about my own past birthday parties. My birthday is in September, so I always remember getting "school clothes" for presents. I had one big party that sticks out in my mind. It was my 7th birthday party and we had it at Happy Joe's. My parents splurged and invited a lot of my friends at school. We had so much fun. I remember wishing for Donny & Marie Osmond barbie dolls when I blew out my candle and to my delight my parents did get them for me that day.
Did you have to share a birthday?
Do you have a birthday that sticks out in your mind?
first?
ReplyDeleteYay!
ReplyDeleteIteach....Love the blog!
ReplyDeleteAs a kid I hated that my Birthday was in December. My parents would always "combine" presents. Many a year I was told "This is part of your Christmas present too." That would kind of put a damper on the day. I don't ever remember being disappointed on Christmas though, so maybe they didn't ever really do that.
I only had one Birthday party as a kid. I was turning 10, and my parents took me and two friends to a restaurant (the name escapes me) with a western theme. The waiters and waitresses were dressed as cowboys and cowgirls. There was a lot of "git along little dogies" and such being shouted and a lot of cap guns being shot. My poor parents must have hated it!My father would flinch every time they shot the cap gun (which was usually right behind his ear.) My birthday cake came out alight with several sparklers. My friends gave me model horses and I was in heaven! (this was during my intense horse phase)
Another time, my mother decided to make me a Christmas birthday cake and put green food coloring in the cake and red in the frosting. The colors didn't exactly come out right....The cake was sort of lime green with pink frosting. It was a disconcerting looking cake, but we all got a chuckle out of it and of course, it tasted fine.
In other news...
ReplyDeleteLast night was as much fun as I thought it would be. In fact, it exceeded my expectations. Today is not too bad, but it will take about two weeks to find out if it worked....talk about breathless anticipation......Thanks to all who sent well wishes...and could you all keep your fingers crossed?????
five!
ReplyDeleteand....6!!! now all I need is a 9..
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Everyone!
ReplyDeleteITEACH: My birthday is in August. I don't remember too many parties when I was really young, though I know my family always got together and sang Happy Birthday.
When I was about 12, my mom started a new tradition. You could ask for anything you wanted for dinner on your birthday, and she would make it. I always wanted T-bone steak. I found out later my dad cringed whenever I announced this..cuz it meant he had to buy anywhere from five to who knows how many steaks, depending on which relatives were visiting. We always had visitors in the summer because of the pool. So while we all swam and played in the backyard..my mom would be in the kitchen cooking up baked potatoes, sauteed mushrooms & onions and corn on the cob. Dad would grill the steaks. My birthday cake was always German Chocolate...but since some didn't like that..mom made a Chocolate cake too.
Mom carried on this tradition until my dad passed away...it made for some wonderful birthdays!
Thanks for the GREAT blog ITEACH!!
SCIRISH: Congrats on FIRST! I had a friend who had an 'intense horse phase'..it was so easy to buy things for her for her birthday. I still like it when someone has an "intense phase"!!! ;)
ReplyDeleteI'll keep fingers and toes crossed for you..eyes too if it'll help. I'll also say a prayer. I sure hope this works! That would be wonderful!
Scirish:
ReplyDeleteCongrats on First!
Hang in there, the yellow is near..
:O)
Good Morning:

ITEACH: I just re-read your blog and I'm sorry I missed this..Happy Birthday to your daughter Carolyn!!
ReplyDeleteThere's that extra "f" again..time for bed..lol..
ReplyDeleteBIRDEE: Waving HI to you..saw ya over in AREA 51!
Happy Thursday Owls.
ReplyDeleteScirish, Congrats on #1. I, too, will keep everything crossed and say a few prayers that this procedure works.
Zona, I love T-bone steak too. I was an adult the first time I had it and I was hooked.
Iteach, great blog. All my kids have birthdays in a different month, however my oldest has a birthday 11 days before Christmas. We made a concentrated effort to NOT combine his birthday with Christmas because I didn't ewant him to feel cheated. I never even decorated the house until after his birthday and I wouldn't let anyone combine gifts for him. I had a childhood friend whose birthday was Dec. 24th and she never had a party just for her birthday or got 'just birthday' gifts. She hated it so I vowed I wouldn't do that to my kid.
HI SACBARB!! I hope you're having fun in San Diego! Didja check your texts yet?? lol..Ok, really going to try and go to bed now. :)
ReplyDeleteIteach, Happy Birthday to Carolyn.
ReplyDeleteScirish, My youngest son's birthday is St. Patricks' day and one year I made him a green cake for his party. It, too, turned out badly and one of the kids said it looked moldy. After that none of the kids would eat it.
Good morning Carol. I hope today is a better day for you.
Zona, I don't have any texts!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 1st Scirish!
ReplyDeleteGood blog Iteach!
Happy 2nd Birthday Carolyn!
October and November are busy months for birthdays. Two friends, mum, brother, niece, Aunt, Uncle and mine. Personally I would just like to stay in bed and wake up the next day.
I remember when I worked in a bakery the character cakes were always my favorite one to do. I think Bert and Ernie were my best, althought the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were the most popular.
Zona...I know what you mean about loving it when someone has an "intense phase". My "gonna be my SIL someday" collects Pillsbury Doughboy stuff, which really works out as she is a pain in the rear to buy for.
ReplyDeleteI had an antique Cow Creamer phase a while back....but it just got overwhelming...I ran out of shelves!!
Good morning Zona (or good night), Carol and Sacbarb.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Hooters!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 1st scirish
I don't have to share a birthday with anyone, but my dad's was 2 days before mine. We have tons of family birthdays in Sept. and a few scattered in other months.
All my birthdays in school involved parties at our house. Regular kid parties when Mom made the cake. This is funny to me know, because I HAD to have my Mom make it so I fit in like the rest of the kids.
My dad was a Master Pastry Chef from Bavaria, and he made the most phenom cakes. But I wanted to be like everyone else on my birthday, so mom made them. As I got older- boy I came to appreciate the lavish works of art and the fantastic flavors that my Dad created. Big Bucks if I was paying for it! For my graduation party my Dad made me 2 cakes. One chocolate creation and one yellow with fresh strawberry layers and homemade cream..... yummmmmmy. For my 25th birthday he made me a hazelnut cake with apricot filling that I can still taste to this day!
On a sad note, we lost a friend last night to the dreaded "C". Damn, I hate that disease and what it does.
Hope everyone has a pleasant day.
Thanks for the lovely memories iteach!
Hi Sacbarb... Hi Shirley....
ReplyDelete25!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Goldie...
ReplyDeleteDang- 26 it was.
ReplyDeleteI remember one year for my friends birthday we filled her car up with balloons. I think we blew up about 75 balloons for that little trick.
ReplyDeleteFor another friend I iced a cake pan for her birthday cake. It was quite funny when she tried to cut into it.
One year for my birthday my friends organized a treasure hunt for me. All the gifts were Star Trek stuff, but they gave me a pint of whiskey first so it took me a while to find all the clues. On gift was a phaser (gun) which I proceeded to shoot everyone with until someone took the batteries out. That was fun.
Birdee:
ReplyDeleteSaw ya over in area 51, waving to ya..
Left ya msg there...
:O)
Zona:
ReplyDeleteI missed the extra "f" :O)
Sorry Goldie♥♥
ReplyDeleteSorry for your loss Goldie.
ReplyDeleteGoldie...Sorry about your friend!
ReplyDeleteShirley...I did a treasure hunt for my ex one year and also gave him a few drinks before hand....I'm not sure who had more fun...I know I laughed my butt off...
ReplyDeleteIcing the cake pan was inspired!!!! Do you mind if I borrow that one sometime????
Scirish help yourself! Make sure someone has a camera handy.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning OWLETTES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteScrish-- congrats on first!!!
Sorry you are in so much pain...
trying to get back pain under control is one of the hardest things to do.... ((((((((HUGS)))))))))!!!!
Iteach GREAT BLOG....
Happy Birthday Sweet Caroline!!!!
Morning ---
ZONA--
sweet dreams... as you head to bed!!
Carol----Spifftacular!!!
SacBarb---Your a good mom separating B'day from Christmas..
Shirley---Good your day was good yesterday...
Goldie---Sorry about your friend..
My birthday is 5 days before Christmas..AND on my parents wedding annivesary!!!!!
SOOOOOO...
Mom always kept them separate...
we never put the tree up before my birthday...when I was about 7-8 I came home from a friends house and asked mom why wasn't our tree up.. and she told me we didn't put it up til after my birthday,,, so then we started putting it up the night of my birthday!!!!
I have 3 birthdays that are very memorable... I will break this up...
SHirley that should have ... HOPE your day was good...
ReplyDeleteYou are too funny... Icing the cake pan....
On my 5th birthday... my party got to go to Blinky's Fun Club...
ReplyDeleteWe lived in Colo. Springs at the time... and Blinky was the clown on Channel five.... I got to be on his show...
what I remember most was the cake was cement!!!!! ( and I got in trouble for trying to sneak icing off of it.. and saying "hey this is cement!!!")
My next really memorable Birthday was my 20th... I was working in a bar at the time... and my Birthday fell on a saturday... My favorite band from the city(DC) was playing.. (I dated the bass player when they were in town)
So when they found out it was my birthday..( we were having a private party from 6-9.. then at 9 we opened to the public and that is when the band started)
So the band agreed to play for the last hour of my party at NO extra charge... that was sooo cool... I thought I was soooo special...
My cake that year hada fifth of Jack Daniels(a real one) as the decoration down the middle of the cake...we drank that at a later date... and we already had obie doobie at the party!!!!!!!!
Shirley: Have you moved the phasers to the Manor basement yet?
ReplyDeleteO.K... and last but not least...
ReplyDeleteabout 10 years ago mom was visiting in the summer... as she usually does... we were going to have a little cookout at a friends house... just four or 5 couples friends to see mom while she was here... well we pull up and it is all kinds of people there.... I couldn't figure it out... we walked in the house and they they started yelling surprise... and I was looking behind me trying to figure out what all the yelling was about... then it finally hit...
my friends gave me a SURPRISE POOL Birthday party in the summer....
When your birthday is in December you are aren't looking for a surprise party in July..
It was the best.... and all cause I made the comment on my last Birthday was that having a birthday in December(and growing up in Colorado) you can never have a pool party...
Hope I haven't bored you all to death...
Have a great day...
Waving at all that land after me!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Whabby---
ReplyDeleteYou posted while I was writing novel Part II
Morning Glories!
ReplyDeleteScrishy got first! Read that so far so good on the new treatment! Crossing my fingers and toes for it to hold!!!!
Iteach birthdays, well mine after Mom passed was forgotten almost every year! This used to really bother me but, I now appreciate it! LOL
I really can't think of a super special birthday. One that I really had fun at was my 42nd a couple of my friends and their spouses rented a house at the beach for the weekend and we all went down and had a great time. Good Food, Good Drinks and Good friends!
Hope everyone has a fantastic day. I am going to get the gray hair covered and see if I can do something with hair growing over my lip. The crap just keeps coming back. I wonder if a perm would make a difference. Why hide it? Maybe highlighting it would make a fashion statement.
Whabbear I do have a Phaser or two in the basement and a couple Bat'leths. There might be a Disruptor down there as well. I wanted a Photon Torpedo but I couldn't get one.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on first, Scirish! I am praying for your treatment to work!!
ReplyDeleteiteach, great blog! I love birthdays! We even celebrate half birthdays. We sing, "Hap Birth to you!" I hope little Carolyn has a wonderful day. We, too, have lots of November birthdays and such--my son, my sister, my SIL, my MIL, my parents' anniversary (55 years this year!).
Zona, I do the same for my kids' birthdays--make their favorite dinner!
Goldie, your Dad's cakes sound delicious! I'm so sorry about your friend.
IBB, it sounds like your friends really love you.
LynnD! LOL @ highlighting and perming your hair over your lip!
Bon'O, so glad you're back! Missed you!
Hello, Carol, Shirley, Whabbear and Sacbarb!
It's a rainy, gloomy day in GA today so I decided I'd just stay in and do a bunch of nothing--it feels good!!
Happy TWOTH to little Carolyn from AuntieBon! and, Good Morning to all.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a busy November, Iteach! To answer your questions...The only big birthday party I had as a child was #9. At the time, we lived in a tiny remote company-owned milltown and my mom ran the General Store/Post Office. Guess where most of the presents came from?
A special birthday relates to your 'shared birthday' question. How funny this comes up today, as just last night I was sharing with LL/NN that I was SO proud when cousin Debbie Jo was born on my 10th birthday. I so looked forward to a lifetime of joint celebrations. Sadly, she was only given 9 birthdays before her little heart lost it's fight. Still think of her every May 15, wishing we could share it again.
Hey, Sandie...how ARE you? Just saw your shout-out above. SO good to be back...still catching up on a week of blogs I missed. Gentle hugs and a back massage to all those in need of one...and how's the CPAP working, Shirley?)
ReplyDeleteITEACH - Great blog!!! My brother Eric's birthday is 2 days before mine. He is exactly 363 days younger than me. And I share my birthday with my Godfather. Needless to say we always shared birthdays!!! Even though we shared the birthday party, Mom would ALWAYS make us our own cakes. I have to laugh, because the year before my Mom died, she finally asked us if it would be ok to make just ONE cake. I giggled and said yes (at the time I was turning 33 and Eric was turning 32)....as long as she made MY favorite cake!!! My first and last children are exactly 5 years and a day apart. So I always do what my Mom did and make each of them their own cake!!
ReplyDeleteZONA - We had the same tradition growing up. And I have carried on the same with the kids....they LOVE picking out what we have for their "special day"!!! Oh, and I'm not sure you would be able to handle the payment plan right now!!! :P
SCIRISH - Congrats on first!!!
Waving a wing at CAROL, SACBARB, SHIRLEY, GOLDIE, IBB, WHABBY, LYNN D, SANDIE & BON*BON!!!

ReplyDeleteGoldie I'm so sorry about your friend. (((HUGS)))
Shirley LMAO @ frosting the cake pan. What an excellent idea!!!
Zona I love T-bones, too.
iteach Wonderful blog today! Happy Birthday to Carolyn!
As a child, I remember being anxious to come home from school on my birthday because I knew there would be a cake and present waiting for me. The present I remember the most was a box with the lid wrapped separately and it kept kind of lifting up. There was a Siamese kitten in it! I was ecstatic!
ITEACH - I forgot to mention that I had those same Donny and Marie dolls!!! I luv'd them. :D Thanks for the memories!!
ReplyDeleteI love birthdays!!! Happy Birthday to Carolyn!! Fun blog ITEACH.
ReplyDeleteAs a child I remember my parents having some children parties for me but I also remember having them canceled because of snow too! I always wished for a summer birthday. IBB..what a great idea your friends had for you! My dad and I always used to count down to our birthdays. I think I love opening cards from my friends and the special dinner of the day. When I was a kid I always wanted spaghetti and angel food cake. I still like that for a favorite meal!
We have birthdays from the end of October through the end of November-(daughter, son, dil, sil, granddaughter and myself)--then Christmas comes along!
GOLDIE: I am very sorry about your friend.
SCIRISH: I hope you start feeling better soon and that your new treatment works for you.
SHIRLEY: It sounds like balloons and water guns, etc., didn't just start with the owls! :)
SACBARB: I know you are probably loving the weather in SD. I hope you have a nice relaxing trip with your granddog!
I can hear ZONA snoring all the way to Colorado!
Hello to everyone and Happy Thursday. I am trying to go through pantry and get food for a food drive our area is having tomorrow. YOu would think I cooked to look at my pantry!
Thanks for the condolences and the hugs everyone. Ed was a friend, and we have know his family for over 20 years. His sister-in-law is a close friend of ours. She even drove 9 1/2 hours to come to our sons wedding in Oct!. So it hurts to see them in so much pain. Ed is out of Pain and it was for the best (for him).
ReplyDeleteThis day has dragged on and on and now that I am getting ready to leave work soon it is raining. Bummer- have to walk the treadmill instead of outside. I am totally inspired by BEBBI (and my leg surgery) to make the steps on my pedometer go up everyday!
Thank you, for all the warm birthday greetings for my daughter.
ReplyDeleteI'm off to have two year old birthday pictures taken.
Goldie- so sorry for your friend
Tinka- Where are you, dear? Did you find some sun?
I'm so hungry for birthday cake!
I am all out of time to type, must go. I will be back later to comment on the birthdays.
Have a safe night everyone!
Just got back from a walk with the grand dog. It is very warm (80-something) here...had to put the A/C on in this upstairs apartment.
ReplyDeleteGoldie, so sorry about your friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and you.
Dianne, I have been alternately lazing around and walking with he dog. Tomorrow I think we will go to the dog beach. I love the ocean.
From Area 51:
San-die-go, Come on down!
LL, sorry to hear about your cousin...so young...so sad. My thoughts go out to you and her family also.

Happy Birthday, Little Girl Iteach!
What a sweet blog, iteach! Well done!
My birthday is also in the summer (just like Zona... except I am so much older than her...six whole days!!!) and I loved having a summer birthday because the parties were always outside....usually at the lake. The only thng I didn't like was that summer birthdays never got celebrated at school. I don't remember ever taking cupcakes to school. Poor deprived Viggy!
Zona and other summer birthdayers...did you get to celebrate your summer birthday at school?
ReplyDeleteVIG - My oldest and youngest's birthdays are at the end of August, right before they head back to school. They usually celebrate a "half birthday" here!! They think it is totally fun, cuz they get to celebrate twice!!!
ReplyDeleteIteach, nice blog my dear niece,You deserve a big denomination Birthday bow! lol!!

ReplyDeleteAttention, Canadian Owls! This Saturday's National Day of Protest has gone.... International!
Protests are being planned in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver.
Join one! Or, start one in your town!
Congrats on first Scirish!
ReplyDeleteGreat blog iteach! I don't remember any special things for my birthday. I don't think I ever had a birthday party. I do remember one time my sister got a barbie doll cake from my grandmother. I thought that was neat. Also, most of the birthday's I remember are the ones for my kids. I tried to have parties and special things for them. They have some good memories, for sure. :)
I walked 12,800 steps today! Iteach, how did you do today? You beat me yesterday, what did you end up with?
I had kind of a bad day. I switched insurance companies for my car and got a quote from 5 places. I have not switched insurance companies so it was a big decision for me! Well, the company I went with promised me no surprises and I have had them for less than a month and they have changed my RATE three times. So, I had a good cry and realized I was going to have to scout out another insurance company for my car insurance. I hate changing this stuff, trying to save a little money. I should have known it was too good to be true. *rant over* Sorry, but I have been upset about it all day.
Shirley, thank you SO MUCH FOR THE SHOES! They fit perfectly and I LOVE THEM! You are the BEST!! How did you know I was thinking of getting a new pair?? I love the yellow and blue combination too!
I will walk a mile or two (or three, or five) in them! :)
Okay going to read comments.
Whabbear, ah... the 15th is not a good time here in Mich. It is (gun) opening deer hunting season. There is gunfire everywhere! I would be spending most of my time ducking lol!!
ReplyDeleteGoldie: Sorry to hear of your loss. :(
ReplyDeleteYour Dad sounds awesome, I can't imagine having cakes like that. It must have been wonderful!!!
IBB: What a cool thing for your family to do!
Dang, Bebbi, I came in a close second with 5,892 steps.
ReplyDeleteToo bad about the car insurance thing- that bites!
I really like the idea of how some of the parents put their Christmas tree up after the December birthday.
ReplyDeleteI remember reading that in a couple of the comments that is really cool.
Zona- Our family has a similiar tradition with birthday food.
ReplyDeleteMy mom always makes me spaghetti and cherry pie for me. She still does!!
I would like to thank everyone again for all the birthday well wishes for Carolyn!
ReplyDeleteShe is pretty amazing!
Shirley, I would have loved a Bert and Ernie cake. Sesame Street was my favorite kid show growing up.
ReplyDeleteIBB you did bore us to death. What neat birthdays! I especially liked the one that was in the summer.
ReplyDeleteIteach: Happy Birthday to Carolyn!!
ReplyDeleteAnd well, on the steps, what can I say, ummmm...yeah...,, I Rocked the steps today.., had to cause I couldn't let you beat me two days in a row..lol ;) Just kidding!!
Yeah, the car insurance thing, it kinds sucked. But I have to get over it and move on, ya know?
Sandie your bunch of doing nothing sounds really good right now. Did you enjoy it?
ReplyDeleteJodi- That is a really good idea about the two birthday cakes. I think I will do that from now on with Caroly and Matthew.
ReplyDeleteLani, I heard from Tink. She is fine. She is just taking it easy today. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Aunt Mary, I love my bow!
ReplyDeleteViggy, I will be sending you somthing on myspace soon.
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I bet it feels good to have that computer running again.
Okay, I am going to bed. Take care all and have a great night!! Sweet DREAMS!
ReplyDelete89
ReplyDelete90~!
ReplyDeleteGood night Bebbi.
ReplyDeleteMy birthday cake always had something to do with chocolate. Either yellow cake with chocolate frosting or devils food cake with dark chocolate frosting. For my brother, my mom always makes German Chocolate cake. She makes the proper frosting from scratch. Yum!
Mary: Ouch! LOL!
ReplyDeleteGood night, Bebbi!
J/L: Stop! You're making me hungry!
ITEACH...great blog! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to CAROLYN!!
ReplyDeleteWHABBY...when I first read your post about the protest, I thought your wrote they are "planning protestants"!! I am a bit tired I guess!
SCIRSH...fingers, toes, legs, eyes and other assorted appendages are crossed for you ;)
I had a lot of memorable birthdays. My parents made great kiddie parties. My birthday this year was amazing. There was a party at work and here at the nest! At work, everyone dressed as me! They totally decorated my work area, had lunch and a yummmmmo cake. I got some lovely gifts AND 10 cans of hairspray!! It was a great day.
On my 13th birthday, I had to put my puppy Shayna to sleep. That night I had a slumber party and I really wasn't in the mood. I kept crying and singing...it's my party and I'll cry if i want to...!
GOLDIE...my condolences to you. {{hugs}}
ReplyDeleteWhen my mom was preggers with me, so was my aunt and a cousin. My grandmother had crocheted a sweater, hat and booties in white. She said the first one born got it. She passed away in Sept. and I was born Oct. 16...my cousin Melinda was born the 24th and my cousin Esther was born Nov. 11th. I got the sweater set ;). I still have it and sadly no one to pass it on to. When Esther's first born has her first born, I will give it to her.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, looks like i shut it down...again
ReplyDeleteMaureen I like your story about the little white sweater, hat and booties. It's sweet that you will pass it on. Okay, I have to watch "Life on Mars" now.
ReplyDeleteiteachie....thanks for the MS treat! Life is just better when there are cupcakes around!!

ReplyDelete'weenie: LOL!
ReplyDeleteMO: What a wonderful gift to be able to pass down!
ReplyDeleteVIG: Never did get to celebrate my birthday in school. Congrats on 100!
J/LIN: I really like 'Life on Mars'
Just an FYI..I watched Kevin McKidd, the new doctor on Grey's, give an interview tonight. He's Scottish and has the hottest accent to go with those blazing eyes! Just love him. VIG..he needs a nickname....
DIANNE: You could NOT!! Could you...?? ;)
ReplyDeleteMARY/MI: I wanna trade..it's going to be mid 80's here all weekend!
JODI: Unfortunately that 'playment' plan..is outta my reach..damn.. ;)
