By Lois Lane AKA No_Newz
The fads post and your comments put this blog into action. Seems many of us beautiful owls grew up in meager nests, loved and warm but without extras. I hope as I fly down memory lane, you will find yourself reflecting back.
Growing up Lane was fun, no matter how poor we were. I was the last of eight kids, raised in a three bedroom apartment in Chicago. Dad worked fulltime, and Mom ruled the roost. What we didn't have in material things and popularity, we made up for in other ways.
No matter where we went, we always had seven friends nearby. Seven other people who would always have our back, should there ever come a time. We should have been declared a gang.
Mom and Dad sure lucked out when the Catholic school offered a huge discount for large families. They got a buy three, get five free discount. And they were on that like an alter boy on the communal wine bottle.
Being popular was virtually impossible for a Lane kid. Everyone and everything in our school, St. Whack 'Em on the Knuckles, revolved around the almighty dollar, rather than the almighty, Almighty, if ya know what I'm sayin'. I suppose our parents raised us differently. Rich in love, rich in faith, rich in fun, rich in togetherness, which sometimes resulted in feeling... rich in claustrophobia.
I remember all of the cool and popular girls wore black and white Saddle Shoes. We Lanes had Trax from K-Mart. They were unisex, blue canvas with white stripes on the sides. If you stepped into a puddle, your toes and socks would turn blue. That was my favorite thing about those ugly shoes. I can't tell you how many times I rushed out of the house wearing one shoe that belonged to one of my siblings. That usually resulted in a mini war, ending in a per-syllable-spanking.
I had moments of jealously. Specifically of the kid whose folks brought McDonalds to him at school. I'll never forget how upset my taste buds were as the smell of those French fries wafted, my teeth sunk into my purple stained bread. That darn apple always squished my sandwich, and by lunch time, the jelly had kicked the peanut butter's ass. It was thin as a Frisbee, and purple as an elbow after taking a major brodie onto the concrete.
As I watched that boy enjoy his fast food goodness, and classmates begged to bum a fry, I reached into my lunch bag to get my apple. Instead, I felt paper. It was a note from my mom.
"Dear Lois, have a nice day! I love you! Love, Mom" She drew a smiley face after her name.
I do believe that note kicked that Happy Meal's ass.

ReplyDeleteHappy Thursday!!
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Scirish..

I hope everyone has an excellent day!!
:-)
FORE!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLois...I woulda given you MY saddle shoes! I hated those damn things!! I don't remember what everyone else was wearing, but it wasn't those!
ReplyDeleteMornin MEK!
ReplyDeleteI do believe I'm a Lane~ Great blog LL~ :D
ReplyDeleteScirish~ congrats on 1st~
Good Morning Mek~
scirish, congrats on first!!!
ReplyDeletelois: great blog! You are so lucky to have had so much love in your childhood. I would have traded all my wishes for "roos" for one note from my mother in my lunch. That sounds like your childhood was idealic!!
Congratulations Scirish! I would have traded ya some blue sneakers for those fancy saddle shoes, any day!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mek. :)
Welcome to the family, Tina. Thank you!
Thanks Bebbi! Lunch notes, kitchen broom dancing and singing off key were some of my favorite things about my mom.
Good Morning Owls. Be back in a few minutes.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Hooters!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 1st scirish!
Boy, I remember always wanting to reach into that lunch bag and pull out "real" cookies or chips and not the store brand! Those were reserved for special occasions like the year end field trip.
I always remember a little girl who I so wanted to be. Her name was Bonnie- and she was the Saddle shoe girl. Always with new clothes, new toys, and lived in the big house by the golf course. I thought she had it all.
Then her parents divorced, she moved away with her mom and years later came for a visit. By then I was older and understood that I was so happy NOT to be that little girl! I had a family, love, and everything I needed. I was the lucky one.
Have a good day everyone.
LL, Great blog. I actually married into the Lane family. That is my Hubby's Step-father's last name. Maybe we are related by marriage. LOL
ReplyDeleteI had the same paper thin, P&J sammie in my lunch, but it was because I made my own lunch and put the apple on top.
I also went to Catholic school and my best friend had 8 siblings. My sis & bro are 13 & 9 years older, so I was like an only child and I always wished I had more siblings closer to my age. I loved going over to her house because there was always so much activity.
Thanks for sharing.
Morning Glories!
ReplyDeletescrish I think you are becoming the first champion! LOL
Great blog Lois! I think you were extremely lucky growing up in that large family.
My childhood was not so lucky and was filled with many challenges. I had a friend who came from a leave it to beaver house and I always envied her growing up.
But I have learned the challenges I faced helped me in many ways. I had learned to adapt for the most part when the shit storm would hit.
I did one year get the suede saddle shoes and I treated those babies like gold! LOL
I have a day of trying to accomplish some housework goals today, sigh, bummer.
Good Morning Scirish - Congrats on being first.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Mek who missed being first by ONE minute. That was a close one.
Good Morning Tina, Scirish, Goldie and Lois.
What a fantastic blog Lois. It brought back so many memories. We didn't have much money either but we had plenty of love. I never felt poor because all of my friends were in the same category. I went to an all girls Catholic Academy. There were some very rich girls there from San Salvador. They were boarders at the school and I remember how upset they were when they had to do chores, like rinsing out their own socks and underwear. They had never done a thing like that before. We thought that was very funny. I think what saved us from competition was the fact we all wore the same uniform. No-one thought about clothes at school. Every Friday we had a school dance with the boys from their private school, St. Louis College. The girls from the Bahamas never attended and the rest of us would decide what we were wear. We had a choice of taffeta, poodle skirts or kilts. I don't know why kilts were in fashion but they were. We all had saddle shoes and loved them. We would always wear the same thing. No-one would think of wearing something different. My mom worked hard to buy me the few clothes I had. She was making thirty nine cents an hour and all of her money went to keeping Joan and I feeling like we were the same as everyone else. It hurts me now to think she never had a new dress but I didn't realize it until much later. The money my dad made from selling houses ran the household. Our school tuition, like yours Lois, was determined by how much your family made. I know we paid very little and the rich kids paid a lot. My mom and my best friends mom both worked at a restaurant. We always felt lucky because we would have a fancy dessert in our lunches. I think they were left overs but that didn't matter. They were great. I wouldn't change my childhood for all the money in San Salvador.
Good morning Owls. I hope you all have had a good start to your day.
ReplyDeleteScirish, Congrats on #1. I hope you are feeling better these days.
MEK, got FORE again. How was the scrap?
Good morning Tina, Bebbi, Tinka and Goldie and all who swoop in later.
I am going to see The Color Purple today, and then helping a friend with some work issues she is having. I am her personal HR consultant. LOL
Have a good day all.
Good morning Lynn. I think we were typing at the same time. I hope your energy has returned after your hard day at the foodbank.
ReplyDeleteSacBarb - Have fun at the "Colour Purple". I would love to see it.
ReplyDeleteVIG - I hope you made the ferry. The highway must have been treacherous with all this wind and rain. Stay safe please.
Is anyone still in the nest? I am marching to 25.
ReplyDeleteI am going to write a new song, "I am All Alone on the Blog".
ReplyDeleteSee you all later.
The first thing I thought Lois Lane was that your bag lunch had more nutrition than that kids Happy Meal.:0)
ReplyDeleteI had my pink Cinderella lunch box with the same peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and apples during grade school. My Dad was in the Air Force so we moved around a lot. I would have to change schools in the middle of the school year. When I was 12 my Dad was sent off to an unpopular war.He didn't return for an entire year. He was an aircraft mechanic during his younger years before he became an aircraft inspector at Ramstein. With that as an occupation he was sent TDY a lot.He was gone a second time for 6 months. The other TDYs weren't as long. My Mom, sister and I had life difficult in that way. We missed my Dad. Our life took a big turn around when my Dad got assigned to Ramstein AFB when I was 15. My Mom also went to work and we finally had an abundance of money which allowed me to travel across Europe for 2 years.I am so thankful to my parents for knowing that the cultural experiences would be a great education for me and a once in a life time experience. I would not change one part of my childhood. I am so glad that I spent those years surrounded by so many friends from different backgrounds. They helped teach me so much about the differences in people and that there should always be room for expansion of ones views and tolerance and acceptence for everyones beliefs and customs.
Tink
ReplyDeleteYou were not alone. I was here but typing.:)
Have a wonderful day here in the Nest. I have a doctor's appointment and then off to visit my parents.
A song for Tinkatia:
ReplyDeleteI am here
all alone
On the blog
Marching on
I click around
Wait for sound
No owls to be found
Ain't nothin' but crickets
Crirping about today
Ain't nothing but silence
To my dismay
I click around
Wait for sound
No owls to be found
I look left
I look right
Not one owlet in my sight
Oh dear, it just ain't right
Clicking solo through the night
Alone I go
A song in tow
20 to 25 in a row
Who knows how far I'll go
Marching up to forty foooooooooour!
As I sing, I tap my toe
And looky here
What do you know
All the owls are in the tree
Watching the parade of me!!!!!!!!
Tinkatia, I don't always see your march as it is happening, but it always makes me smile. :)
Good Morning Dreama and Lois, thanks for writing a song for me. We will have to ask Whabbear to which music should we sing this new tune. He is good at that.
ReplyDeleteLois - I forgot to mention how annoyed I would get when the odd mother would bring a McDonald's kids pack to her kid. I knew very well it was because she was too tired or rushed to make a nutritious lunch and yet she would make her child the envy of every other kid in the class.
ReplyDeleteThe other lunch that would make the others jealous were those prepackaged lunches with the processed meat, cheese, crackers and pudding. I would cringe when I would hear kids, who had perfectly balanced interesting lunches. say to the owner of the 'junk lunch', "Boy your mom really loves you". Of course I was not at liberty to say anything but I surely thought a lot.
Lois, great blog! I always wanted to come from a large family like yours. I have just one sister who is five years older so we never really hung out together. I just remember her being mean to me! LOL
ReplyDeleteI LOVED my saddle shoes! I think I'd still wear them today if I wouldn't be laughed out of town! LOL
Congrats on first, scirish!! How are you feeling?
Tinka, I always love your stories!
Area 51:
Maureen, I loved what you said--right on the mark!
Carol, no I didn't feel any chemistry between Callie and Erica, either. In fact, something about Erica just didn't sit right with me even before the story line with Callie. She's a good actress and attractive enough but I just don't think she has much sex appeal, you know?
My giant poodles are getting their teeth cleaned today so I have to go get them shortly. Poor babies. When I dropped them off this morning one of the doctors said, "Oh, I recognize them--they ate the albuterol inhaler!" Yep. That would be them.
Oh, Tinkatia, when I was a kid, all I could think was, I wish I could have MdDonalds just once. We never had fast food.
ReplyDeleteI remember feeling "cheated" as we drove from church back home. We always drove by a packed McDonalds and a packed Burger King, on our way to our packed apartment, to pack in homemade brunch that we all helped to prepare.
Looking back I realize we had it real good. But at the time I was hopeful that our family truckster would just pull into the parking lot just once.
It's kind of funny, but I don't do fast food as an adult, and my kids are probably thinking the same thing. LOL!
Hi Sandie! You popped in while I was popping out. Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the blog.
ReplyDeleteOff I go to clean something. :(
Good Morning Sandie - Are your dogs teeth done with or without an anesthetic? It is very controversial here. We have a dog dentist here who the vets hate. The vets say, "If we could clean their teeth correctly without a general anesthetic we would do that but cleaning them only on the surface without getting up into their gums does more harm than good". I don't know whether to believe the vets or not. I think Amicus once told me the teeth should be done by the vet. It costs a lot of money and I don't like general anesthetic for my little dogs. I would really like to find out the truth.
ReplyDeleteI think I threw the numbers off.
ReplyDelete39
ReplyDeleteGood almost afternoon Everyone!
ReplyDeleteLOIS: What a terrific blog! I could almost taste that peanut butter and jelly sandwich..and I clearly remember the 'per syllable spanking'!!
We didn't have alot growing up either...but I don't think I realized that until I was older. My mom made all my clothes and all of my sister's as well, until we got into high school. Mom was an artist, dad a salesman...and she told me years later that there were weeks when there was only a quarter left at the end of the week for grocery shopping. Then she would sell a painting...she said she always knew God would provide.
My fave shoes were my blue boat shoes..I wore those until they had holes in them..I never wanted to give them up. I lived just six houses from school so I could come home for lunch..you got it..peanut butter and jelly..with one added benefit..mom. She'd have the windows open in anticipation of my arrival...Creedence Clearwater Revival blasting.
My folks worked so hard to make sure we were happy...and when my Aunt moved in with my three and a half cousins (she was 4 months pregnant) my parents worked even harder to make sure they had all they needed too.
I still live in the house I grew up in. My mom and dad are gone..but the love is still here. It's still home.
Thank you LOIS for your wonderful blog..it sparked so many good memories.
SCIRISH: Congrats to you on FIRST! I really do hope your back is feeling better.
ReplyDeleteMEK: LOL @ FORE... ;)
GOLDIE: I wanted Lays Bar-b-que chips for lunch so bad..but we always had the big ol' rippled store brand kind. Now they have "Wavy" chips...and I am NOT interested..lol...
LYNND: I must have just missed out on the saddle shoes..what I remember were a pair of prized penny loafers..
TINKA: I'll say it for you...Whooppee on 25 and 40!! :)
TINA: Nothin'...
SANDIE: Nikki waves a paw to Luc and Remy!!
SACBARB: Enjoy "The Color Purple"!
LOIS: Again..loved the blog..and loved your song for TINK!!
From AREA 51:
ReplyDeleteSACBARB: I must have missed your post about the macrame...did you make an Owl necklace by any chance? I actually still have the one my mom made!
BIRDEE: Hope you got some rest and feel better...
MO: Not a rant...I too believe everyone should be able to say what they feel, that's one of the very foundations of this country..
JODI: LOL...not mine either.. ;)
scirish Glad to see the Owl Shop opened early this morning. :)
ReplyDeleteMEK Congrats on SECOND! LOL
LL/NN I'm not sure which name to call you anymore so am using initials of both. Great blog today. I just have one little brother and we had a childhood of very modest means, too. My mom was a stay-at-home mom and my dad worked nights in the aero-jet industry so he would leave for work shortly after I returned from school. We had a very quiet household. I never questioned being loved, though. Mom was a great seamstress and made me beautiful clothes. I remember taking bag lunches to school and having a cheese sandwich on white bread and some potatoe chips. There was usually some kind of fruit which I would ususally throw away. I would put the chips in the sandwich and smash them down with the bread. I still love cheese and chip sandwiches. :)
J/LIN: I liked salami sandwiches with smooshed chips...seemed like the sandwich always tasted better if it was smashed..
ReplyDeleteZona I never tried it with salami. Now I am craving a cheese and chip sandwich. I will have to settle for corned beef on wheat bread.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog Lois and congrats on it being your 1st here at the Nest!
ReplyDeleteIf I did take my lunch to school it was usually PB&J, with a banana that always squished my sandwich no matter how I put it in my pack. I lived close enough to the school that I could go home for lunch if I wanted to.
Good afternoon/evening Scirish and congrats on 1st!
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon/evening Mek, Tina, Bebbi, Tinka, Goldie, Sacbarb, Lynn D, Dreama, Sandie, Zona and Just Lin.
On Tuesday a replacement CPAP machine and humidifier were sent to me and mine were taken to be fixed. The humidifier they brought me leaks, so I can't use it. They couldn't ship one out until Thursday. Hmmmmm. What day is today? Hmmmmmm, I think it's Thursday. Did the humidifier replacement for the replacement that was replacing mine come today? NOOOOOOOO! Hmmmmm. Let me call. Oh it is still on the truck(Same Day Curier...ironic that it takes two days) and should be there before 5. Hmmmmm, what time is it now? Oh, look...it's 5:30! Guess it ain't coming today! So much for Same Day Curier. Third night without a humidifier and a good sleep. ARRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!
Hi Everyone...Great blog LL!! I have always loved chips smashed in a sandwich too and still do. I especially like it with PB&J or Tuna. I always had the same sandwich and fruit and celery...no chips. My friend always had one of those lunch snack bags of fritos..how I wanted her lunch. I still get excited to have fritos of my own (this could show therapy is still needed)!
ReplyDeleteWell, today hasn't been fun and it is only 2:30. I had to go to the dentist(as I mentioned the other day) and have a 38 yr old bridge "jack-hammered" out. Damn, they weren't kidding..it sounded just like a hammer and felt like it too. They finally had to numb me and that didnt help with the hammering much...but the good news is that it came out without breaking. The did the cavity and put it back on. This took two hours and my mouth is not feeling gteat!
The other sad news for me was that I was layed off from my volunteer job. I have been working with Trinity Hospice and they are owned by Sunrise Nursing Homes and they were told yesterday that they were closing down in Colorado and Arizona. I feel very bad for all the workers that have worked so hard to get this hospice going for the last year. The patients will be transferred to other hospice places. I also am going to miss my patients that I have gotten to know. I know they don't remember me but I still feel that connection. I have never been layed off from a job you volunteer.
I think I will now go and lay down and rest my mouth.
BTW, MO....We (the Broncos) are coming to visit you in Cleveland tonight for a game. It would be so nice if you would "let" us win because we are kind of getting mad at our team and coach!! Thank you in advance..xxoo JODI: Shirt on?
SHIRLEY: Sometimes our courier comes later as they have so many packages to deliver. I hope that happens for you tonight.
TINK; Congratulations on Tango and Tia winning the contest. How darn exciting is that for you?
BEAR: I am sorry Prop 8 was was defeated. It is crazy how they go back and forth. Will this affect your marriage to HUZ? I sure hope not. It just seems like there are so many more issues to be spending money on to help all of us. Again, I am sorry. I wish I could have voted NO with you.

ReplyDeleteCongrats on First!
Lois Lane:
Congrats on your first blog for the nest, I think being a "Lane" was pretty special... Thanks for writing the blog and sending it off to me, I appreciate it so.. BTW.. Just read Home Fires.. you def had me..
I did not read the comments as of yet, I will when I get home....
ReplyDelete:O)
Tinka, I understand exactly how you feel about teeth cleaning for dogs. I lost my tiny dog (she was 12 yrs old) years ago when her teeth were cleaned and her kidneys failed due to the bacteria released into her system. That's why I haven't had Ippuni's teeth cleaned in a few years--he's old and I figure either his teeth or the cleaning will take him so I'll just let it be his teeth, unless he's in pain, of course. But, now days vets give antibiotics before cleaning to prevent such things. And, the anesthesia is much safer than in years past. It's way easier on dog's hearts. My poodles are just 3 so I felt fine about anesthetizing them. They did fine. Just as with people, it's so important for overall health to have healthy/clean gums and teeth. You may want to talk to your vet about it.
ReplyDeleteAnd, what the heck ever happened to Amicus??? I sure miss her.
ReplyDelete55
ReplyDeleteSandie - I have talked to the Vet and she says the same as you. I just wanted another opinion. I always have the vet do it at the hospital but I have a few friends swear by this other lady dentist. You have convinced me that my vet and Amicus is right.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard from Amicus since the day she wrote me and said she would never scare me again. I was scared when I didn't hear from her for 3 weeks. She said she had been on vacation and she is now back. That was the last time she wrote. That was a long time ago now. I think she has moved on. She still has her myspace but does not accept messages or comments. I hope she is okay that's all I care about.

ReplyDeleteI just woke up and now I must get something worthwhile done around here. I spend most of my time keeping my two fires burning. My house sure is cozy however.
ReplyDeleteTinka Unfortunately, dogs will not sit nicely with their mouths open while getting their teeth cleaned. To do it properly requires being able to clean beneath the gum line just like a dentist for humans. Having your dog on IV fluids during the procedure helps keep the kidneys functioning properly. The non-vet person cleaning animal teeth is probably doing hand scaling which is basically chipping away really obvious big chunks of plaque, which you could do, too, with your fingernail. This is not the same as a true dental cleaning where you can get between the teeth and under the gum. During the procedure, your dentist will also be able to check the health of all your dogs' teeth and take care of any problems.
ReplyDeleteHello to everyone.
ReplyDeleteLOIS, Thank you for your blog today. Another memory maker. We didn't have very much money. Just enough to have food on the table and my mother sewed most of our clothes. When I was small I had blue shoes with a strap. To this day when I see a blue car etc. I think of my blue shoes. My mother made our lunches. I especially remember black olive sandwiches with mayonnaise. I remember one embarrassing day when I forgot my lunch and when the bus came back in front of our house after doing a loop, my mother stopped it in it's tracks waving my lunch. The driver stopped and my mother entered the bus waving my lunch saying "you forgot your lunch". Embarrassing!
VETERINARY DENTAL QUESTION: Dentals really are important. An unhealthy mouth can lead to kidney disease etc. Anesthetic is required to do a thorough job. A deep gum cleaning is necessary. Once the teeth are clean you can followup with tooth brushing (ya right) if the dog or cat will let you. Also T/D food as a supplement helps keep them clean.
Shirley~ every time i read about your CPAP machine.....i think you are saying C-CRAP machine.....and when I finish reading, I'm sure you're saying it~ :)~
ReplyDeleteI'm so sleepy~
ReplyDeleteLast break of the day and I want to nap~
ReplyDeleteBig day for the 16 yr old! WE get to stand in line at MIDNIGHT to get a new xbox game!!!!! YAY!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnyone want to come with me?
ReplyDelete69~
ReplyDeleteahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh~
ReplyDeleteWow....i didn't even notice that was cuming up~ :)~
Just_Lin - Thanks for reaffirming what Sandie said. I will never doubt my vet concerning this again. She told me all these things but this doggy dentist here has become very popular with a lot of people. The implication of many is the fact that Vets make big money doing things that aren't entirely necessary. I do however really understand the need for the anesthetic in this instance. Thanks to both of you. I really wasn't going to try the new 'dentist' but I wanted some arguments to defend my Vet when the topic comes up with my friends.
ReplyDeleteI didn't mean to be redundant. I didn't refresh before I wrote and didn't see SLIN'S blog.
ReplyDeleteTINKA: When are you coming to sunny AZ?? It's 74 here now with clear skies..we have all the doors and windows open..
ReplyDeleteHI LANI!!
TINA: I'm glad you could fit that 69 in..sure makes for a nice, fulfilling last break..doesn't it?? ;)
Mr. Z is modeling all his Halloween costumes as he's putting them away...this is scaring me...
For any of you following my RoLo campaign, I finally received a response from Janette. (the Ja in JAHERO)
ReplyDeleteI wrote her a few weeks ago asking if there were any writing positions available on Rosie's Variety Hour.
I explained that Rosie used to read my blog and said I was funny. When I wrote on my blog, about maybe I'm not funny enough to land a comedy writing job for SNL, MAD TV, The Tonight Show or Ellen, Rosie wrote, "You are funny Lo. I bet you could get a writing job on one of those shows if you really wanted it."
She was also the one who encouraged me to take the classes I wanted to take at The Second City in Chicago. It was the time of my life.
Here's what Janette wrote in an email, "Hi Lois...
I'm beyond swamped right now so only skimmed your email. There is not an opportunity to write on the special but if we go further I would be happy to take a submission from you. I can give you more detail on that and read more about you when I have a minute. Just wanted you to know I"ve gotten the email and will address when I can.
:)janette"
So it's not great news but there is still hope. I live for hope. :)
Lois runs off singing: Everybody's got a hold on hope it's the last that's holding me.
GAH! I'm such a blog hog. Sorry for another super long post.
ReplyDeleteThank you Zona, Just_Lin, Lynn_D, Dreamatexas, Shirley, Barb, Dianne, Carol, Lani, Tina I sure hope I didn't miss anyone.
Have to take my old man to work again at 4am, so tired. Calling it a night. Thank you all for sharing your stories and offering up your saddle shoes to a blue toed little Lo. :) Good night.
Good for you Lois for doing what you want in life! I hope something comes through for you.
ReplyDeleteWell, after hearing all this talk about animals and the vet/dentist...I think I should have gone there today. At least I would have been put to sleep..I guess next time.
It is chilly here tonight...41 but the sun was shining all day. ZONA: 74 sounds perfect. I guess this is the time to visit you and MEK! I wanted to ask you some questions about MRZ wearing costumes but ---never mind---I don't want to get too personal with you! :) If you aren't in the pool then it looks like you are playing Halloween...what's next?
Almost time for the game...I hope JODI and MEK are in full yelling voice. Again MO, thanks for whatever you can do.
See ya' guys later!
Lois/NoNewz I just want to chime in and say "good for you", too. It's a tough industry to break into but those who have had to be very persistant. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteNO NEWZ - Great 1st blog here in the nest!!! It brought back so many memories. I think the favorite being that my Mom packed my luch everyday....and ALWAYS with a note on my napkin!!! I have continued this tradition with my kids....and boy if I miss a day I sure do hear about it!! Congrats on hearing from Janette. Not exactly what you were looking for, but at least a step closer!!
ReplyDeleteZONA - Another successful espisode!!! :P
TINA - Congrats on 69!!! What more could a girl want on her break?!!? Oh, and I get to take in the midnight showing of Twilight on the 21st!!! Of course I am my daughter's hero right now, because I'm willing to do this. :D
I hope everyone has a great night....have to be to work by 4am!!
Oh what the hell.....
ReplyDelete80!!!
ReplyDeleteLois,
ReplyDeleteI love your blog. I had only one sibling, but we were lower middle class. I do think life was a little bit easier for us, because we were such a small family.
I ate cold lunches all the time, because I was a picky eater. The little smokie links with the rubbery cheese noodles never appealed to me.
We shopped at K-Mart a lot basically because when I was little we didn't have a lot of choices in my small poor town.
I always felt sorry for my younger sister she always had to wear my hand me downs.
We didn't start eating out until I was in fourth grade when my got a full time job. Then I thought we died and went to heaven.
SANDI: I missed your informational post on dentals also. I got enough rest, but I seem to be rather groggy today and not concentrating very well. I hope everyone has a good night.
ReplyDeleteZona - As Lonestar sings "I"m Already There". Do you see me? If the rain doesn't stop soon you will see me in Noah's Arc.
ReplyDeleteGoogle the song on UTube if you want a good cry. Actually it would be a good video for Nov. 11th. (Take note Carol)
What did you think of Grey's tonight?
VIG - I am so happy you are safely in Richmond tonight. I was very worried about you on the highway.
Lois - That would be great if you could break into that business. Think positive.
Jodi - Sorry I missed your call. I must have been napping or bringing in wood. Let's say I was bringing in wood. That doesn't sound as bad.
Wishing everyone a Good Night. I am going to leave my cozy fire and go to my cozy bed. What a lazy day this has been. See you all tomorrow.
I will get a little exercise before I leave.

ReplyDeleteGood Night Again Owls.
ReplyDeleteHi All! Tink, looks like I just missed you again. Have a good night's sleep and sweet dreams.
ReplyDeleteI went to a tasting this evening, so I walked it off after and walked 14658 steps today! Yay!
I am exhausted though. Tomorrow I work a later shift so I won't be around much, after 11 am. It will be nice to sleep in a couple of hours if I can. Sometimes I can't sleep in very well.
Again, great first Blog Lois! You are going to be a nice addition to the nest!! An almost famous write, right in our midst!! When you get your job with Rosie, you will have to help us owls get in to see a show!! :)
write should have been "writer"! sorry.
ReplyDeleteiteach: We have a lot in common. We had spaghetti in the can a LOT, Fried bologna, chicken hot dogs (not even the good hotdogs). When my dad would have steak or chicken, no one was allowed to have the breasts but him. AND, we didn't get the steaks. We being the children, we would have the chicken dogs.
ReplyDeleteAfter my parents divorced when I was 10, my childhood was basically over. My parents were too busy F@cking, fighting, gambling or just being so into themselves it makes a person wonder why they even had children to begin with.
I remember the time I came home and dad had sold the living room furniture because he spent too much money at the track. Oopsy.
I am not bitter, I swear. I know that sounded bitter but I have long since gotten over it. You either move on and accept and love your parents the way they are or you go crazy and blame them for every little thing that goes wrong in your life. I chose to move on, love them, and try to be a better parent than both of them combined. I have three intelligent, beautiful, hard working children who are all in college and who got notes in their lunch boxes.
ReplyDeleteLet's see if I have this right~
ReplyDeleteDianne would rather be put to sleep than see the dentist~ hmmmmmm~
Dianne was fired from a volunteer job~ hmmmmmmm~
And Tinka was bringing in wood~ hmmmmm~
interesting night~ :)~
and bebbi~ you have a great attitude~
I bought a book tonight, very excited.
ReplyDeleteUsually I go to the library, but it called me at the grocery store.
It doesn't even look like my type of book, but it was calling me.
(Also it was on sale.)
It was called Twlight, something like that. I think it is about vampires.
I have seen it advertise on myspace, so I thought why not.
Trying to think outside of my box.
Bebbi, you did exactly what my dad did and I applaud you for that.
ReplyDeleteMEK, Ghost looks really really good tomorrow night.
ReplyDeleteIn fact I'm afraid to watch it, I think it will make me cry.
Bebbi, I did 13,485 steps tonight.
ReplyDeleteI'm off to bed with my new book. Good night everyone.
ReplyDeleteHi all, been up since 5:00am! Not great for a night owl! I had an appt. with a knee specialist. I might have to have the dam thing done over!
ReplyDeleteMr Mary and I went to a spaghetti dinner tonight. We bought the ticket from our neighbor girl for Band Boosters. What a hectic night! The middle school kids were doing all the work (waiting tables, taking order etc. It was a mad house, with kids running around them making so much noise!
It was good practice for them so we tried to be patient. It does make you appreciate your peace and quiet more LOL!!
We were not poor, but far from rich. We always had food on the table and had paid school lunches.
Our cloths were never as nice as the richer kids, but Mom always had our clothes pressed and clean.
The one thing I envied, was the girls that always had matching angora sweater, socks and pleated skirts. We lived in a wonderful neighborhood with teachers, principles, business men. The women were mostly stay at home moms. It was a Leave it to Beaver kind of place.I miss the friendly neighborhoods. We never locked our doors. I don't think we even had locks!my
Looks like I'm alone....

Lois: Great blog today! Writing it must have been a great trip down, ahem, memory Lane!
ReplyDeleteAnd the best of luck with the writing career! A tough profession to crack, without doubt, so it will take all the tenacity you can muster. Well be cheering you on!
Tink: LOL at Noah's Ark! I guess they're getting hit with a pretty hefty blizzard in the midwest tonight, too.
MEK: Hugs back! I'm still pretty angry, but it's incredible how many people came up to me today and shared their outrage with the outcome. That gives me some hope!
And on the topic of the blog today:
Zona: Your house was amazing... so many reminders of your parents were everywhere.
My story is not the classic rags-to-riches tale. My dad was a successful businessman who became president of his company, so I lived an upper middle-class existence until heading off to college.
That's when things got complicated. My Dad was president of the Canadian branch of Teledyne, a large conglomerate headquartered in the US. In 1981, when I was in first year of grad school, the head office in LA abruptly fired him, and left him with a pension of about $600 a month. As you can imagine, life for my parents changed in an instant, and since my Dad was never a "salt away for a rainy day" type, his retirement years have been drastically different from what he (and I) envisioned they would be.
One thing the whole experience did is teach both my sisters and myself to always have an eye out for retirement.
Of course, if the stock market keeps going the way it has, "keeping an eye out" may not matter very much! My 401K has lost almost half of its value in the last 6 months!
ITEACH - You will LOVE Twilight!!! I have read it and the 2nd book New Moon. Can't wait to read # 3 & 4!!! I started reading the series because my daughter is obsessed with it and I knew that the movie is coming out on 11/21. I have agreed to take Sam and her friend Anna to the midnight showing. I can't wait to hear what you think of it!!
ReplyDeleteBEBBI - Way to go....attitude is everything!!
MEK - I didn't even realize that they were playing.....DIANNE didn't give me the heads up!! So no.....I didn't have my shirt on. :P
WHABBY - So sad what happened to your Dad. One just never knows. I have heard more people tell me at work that they are afraid that they will never be able to retire.
TINKA - I believe you.....bringing in wood....made me smile. MR. JODI has brought in A LOT of wood. I think we have about 4 cords of wood stacked up for the winter!!!
ReplyDeleteZONA - That comment got me humming a song!!!
ReplyDeleteI better go get prettied up for work.....I'll check in after I get home!!
ReplyDelete110!!!
ReplyDelete111
ReplyDeleteGood morning!
ITEACH!!! YAY!! Good job on the Steps!! I am so glad for you! Yay Yay Yay!
ReplyDeleteLOIS...great blog. And congrats on your writing career. The RoLo show will certainly be a hoot! Hmmmm, maybe the RoLoMo show...just sayin'!! Seriously, I hope you do get to write for Rosie, you have great talent.
ReplyDeleteGood morning feathered friends.
Off to work soon, but wanted to wish you all a great day.
Mo: Have a great day at work!
ReplyDeleteOK, not a great start to the day. I just spoke with Lee Anne from Sam Day Courier regarding the humidifier that I was suppose to get yesterday. They say it was delivered yesterday at 1:13pm but no one was home. I said "that is totally wrong (bullshit)." Lee Anne said she would see if it could be delivered today. WTF?? I said it's a piece of medical equipment and I have to have it today. Now I'm waiting to hear back. AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteShirley!! That is ridiculous!! I hope that you get it today. I wonder wear they tried to deliver it?? What company was it? FED EX??
ReplyDeleteohh..you said it was Sam Day Courier, sorry...never heard of them, are they local?
ReplyDeleteNo Bebbi they aren't just local. It is in the states too, at least that is what the web site says.
ReplyDeleteReally have to go, but SHIRLEY...call back and skip Lee Anne and ask for a supervisor or manager. That is unacceptable and it damn well better be delivered TODAY.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry this has been so tough on you. {{hugs}}
oh, wth....120!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mo!
ReplyDeleteThanks Maureen. I am definately not letting Lee Anne bulldose over me. Have a good day.
ReplyDeleteIt is so frustrating because for the last six month my CPAP machine has been making a noise I wasn't finacially able to fix. Now that I am finally getting that fixed the stupid courier system is screwing up the delivery of the humidifier that will finally let me get a good nights sleep. That is all I want. A good nights sleep. Is that too much to ask? Can you tell I'm getting pissed?
ReplyDeleteNope, can't tell at all Shirley ;)
ReplyDeleteI understand about a good night's sleep. I have been getting up way to early this week because of the time change and it has made me so tired all week!
