Unsettled Sky

~This picture was taken by Zona, she titled it "Before the Storm" I see the unsettled sky~

Did you ever wake up and on your first eye opener realize that your day was just going to be very different from the day before, kinda like a intution. I have had those lately and it scares the crap out of me, I don't know if its all the change in the air, or just everything being so unsettled.

My mom always looks in the sky (and yes the stars) and tells me "Oh how unsettled the sky looks" however when I look up I don't see it, try as I might I can't see what she sees. Yet, when a new day dawns, and my one eye opens, some days I can feel it. I guess I don't have to see it, for me its the feel. I don't tell my mom I can't see what she sees, as we are both different people and can't always see the same. However my respect for my mom runs deep, so if she sees it, I allow her to, as its her right.

We all look at life differently, our personalities are who we are, it is what we created in ourselves, it is what we believe in. I look at my mom with admiration daily, even tho we don't always see the same thing, it really does not matter. As the respect is was matters most.

I wonder often in my life, how I was taught respect? Did I learn the hard way? Or was it instilled in me as a child? And as I wonder, I think back on my life and see that mostly I was given respect, and if I was not, I respected anyway, in hopes the respect would come forth. And as I write this I see more clearly the unsettled sky, I see my mom, and I see that respect was instilled in me as a child, for even tho the sky might be unsettled, the respect is not, it is clear~

  2. Carol, That was really well written. I tried really hard to teach my children to respect others and their feelings. I think that I was taught that to some degree but learned it as well. For me, being disrespectful causes my conscious to hurt, it makes me feel bad. It is so important. You have to respect others in life always, whether you agree or not with their opinions, feelings, or outlook.

I try to always show respect to everyone, even if there is a personality conflict. Respect goes hand in hand with dignity, honor, validation, empathy and humanity. It's just like professionalism at work. The people who can be professional are the ones who understand how to be respectful to others.

Lack of respect will be the FIRST thing that will help you to get no where in life. I know a few people that are our age that still haven't figured that out yet, and probably never will. The sad thing is, they have continued it on through their children!

  3. Another thing that goes hand in hand with respect is patience. I was SORELY lacking in that, in my younger years. I am way more patient now, but at times, I still am not always!!

  5. Congrats on 1st Bebbi!

Carol for me respect is just natural. In my family we were always told to respect people and I do. I expect the same in return, although there are a lot of times I don't get it.

  8. Bebbi I just heard from Andrew (apparently Lee Anne doesn't want to talk to me anymore) at Same Day Courier. He said they would try to ship it out tomorrow morning. I said "No,that's unexcetable. I absolutley need it today." He is going to see if I can get it by tonight. I guess he hasn't seen my status on Myspace..."Back off, I'm cranky, crampy and out of chocolate!!"

  14. Good morning Hooters!

Congrats on 1st bebbi and hello Shirley, Ibb & NN/LL!

Great blog and that picture was AWESOME.

Respect and manners were instilled in us from the moment we were born. My parents- especially my dad demanded it. You never addressed an adult by their first name, and you always treated people as you wished to be treated. I tried very hard to instill that in my own children.
I think I did a good job of it too.

Hope everyone has a great day.

  15. Morning Owls!

Great blog Carol! I don't think respect is respected anymore. it doesn't seem to be "in". What does seem to be "in" is conflict. If two people disagree, the norm seems to be name calling and put downs. I just don't get it...What does that accomplish? It certainly is not going to change anyone's thoughts. It just perpetuates anger and retaliation, which is not productive at all.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Good morning Hooters,

    Beautiful words, Carol.

I was taught that respect is one of the basics of life, just as much a part as breathing, water, food and shelter. To respect and be respected gives serenity to the meaning of life. What a sad thing for anyone to feel the need to throw verbal "zinger's" just to make themselves feel superior. In my opinion, it only reflects the lack of proper values being taught to them as a child. Maybe that was when the expression 'cryptic message' was invented. It's a shame for anyone to feel so badly about themselves and the lack of selfworth to live a life this way. Sad, very sad, indeed...

Zona: Love your beautiful picture. The sunsets in Az. are amazing, or was that a sunrise, as you are most times asleep at that time of the evening. Ha! It looks like a gorgeous postcard.

Congrat's bebbi on 1-6, and thanks for breakfast.

Shirley: I'm so sorry you are having to go through these delivery problems. Maybe by tonight all will be taken care of and you can get a good night's sleep.

Lois: Good morning, sounds like a lot of fun going on tonight. Tell your daughter Happy Birthday from the Hooters.

ibb: So good to see you, wish I could come to your craft show.

scirish: Good morning! I do think you are so right. Hope you are feeling well today.

Goldie: Good morning to you. I GET you about Daddy's demanding respect being shown. I remember what mine said to a 12/13 year old boy that called him by his first name....."Son, since we're on a first name basics, my first name is Mister".

Hope everyone has a great Friday.

  35. Morning Glories!

First for Bebbi! Way to go!

Carol interesting and thought provoking blog.

I was trying to remember who taught me the basics of respect. As you all know my Mom died when I was 6 and my Dad kind of checked out after that, so I am not sure.

I do know that my Dad was and still is very tender hearted and he was always helping someone. Especially those less fortunate, but he was also pretty biggoted. I do remember when I was about 8 years old he made a racist statement and I turned and looked at him and said that was wrong or something to that effect. He kind of looked at me like uh oh. My mind and gut told me that innately he was saying something bad about a person and their color should have nothing to do with who they are.

I have always had a sense of courtesy and respect in general pupose. I have found as I get older that I can respect them as a fellow human being but I do not have to put up with disrespectful talk or slieghts. I try to politely correct it and if that does not work I just don't have anything more to do with the individual if I can help it.

As I am aging I have less time to put up with nonsense. I guess it is that respect is earned saying.

I feel a sense of unsettled sky in myself lately, which I recognize as change is coming. Usually a soul growth I guess you would call it. Change is hard and I am trying to recognize what it is that is changing about me. Self analysis is a hard one with me.

Whabby: I have been thinking about prop 8 for days. I told Mr. Lynn D last night IMHO if the gay and lesbian community can not have the same rights as the rest of the country guaranteed in our Constitution it seems to me then they should be exempt from paying State and Federal Taxes. If you are recognized only as a second class citizen it only seems fair to me.

Then I got up this morning and went to Huffington post and their is an article written by Melissa Ethridge and she was voicing the same exact thoughts I had been thinking. Weird.

Hope everyone has a great day!

  38. Respect-

    Thought about it all morning.

It bounced around in my head like a pinball.

Overall I come off as a respectful person, but I have areas to improve.

In my lifetime I have let emotions get in the way and have showed disrespect for family members, friends, our current president, a telemarketer on the phone, etc....

I keep our local priest busy during confessional time.

I do feel regret afterwards and I keep trying to do better.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Most of all I don't show enough respect for myself.

    Working on it......

    ReplyDelete
  40. Zona - I loved that picture and

Carol - I loved your blog.

Respect is so important. We got it from our parents and the nuns. We were respectful or else!!! My children and grand children are very polite. I look at some kids in town and wonder if anyone is trying to teach them respect and empathy. Schools try but it's really the parents who have the responsibility to teach their kids the Golden Rule. Maybe the parents don't have the time or else they don't think it's important.

I must get my fires going. The rain is record breaking and will continue to be that way all week. I will be back after breakfast (Thanks Bebbi) and read the comments. There are a lot here already this morning.

    Have a great day everyone.

Congrats on first, Bebbi! And, great rain walking this morning!

Shirley, I'm so sorry about your delivery. I sure hope they get it to you today. Right now I have no RESPECT for those people!

  54. Carol~ Superfantastic blog~ I know that feeling you get.....i get it too~ Respect is something that is so easy to give, unless of course, if it's not returned. That's when I have a hard time. When I see a kid disrepecting their parents, I tell my children to watch and listen......AND NEVER ACT LIKE THAT or else!!! I always called my friends' parents Mr and Mrs. Nowadays, adults are letting my children call them by their first names. I nip that in the bud real quick and correct them and explain that it is a sign of respect. ...i'm rambling.....someone kept me up til 2am~......and it wasn't the Mr~

    bebbi~ congrats on first~

Ronnie~ Love the "Mister!" (and I've always loved Zingers...especially the chocolate ones!)

  55. Happy Friday Owls.

Carol, great blog and beautiful pic from Zona. Respect is very important and I agree with Scirish, that somehow it is lost on many younger people. IMHO, it has to do with RAP music. A lot of the lyrics use language that is totally disrespectful of humanity in general. It is not a good example for our youth.

I was also taught by Nuns that demanded and commanded respect and it continued at home. Like Mary, we always called adults Aunt or Uncle or Mr. or Mrs. or Miss, depending on the familiarity with the family. Ronnie, LOL @ your Dad, "first name is Mister."

My children are the only kids in my in-laws family that call my Hubby's siblings Aunt/Uncle and they still do, even though they are all adults now. I would never dream of calling my Aunts and Uncles simply by their first name.

LynnD, As I am aging, I too have trouble respecting some people in high positions, but I still respect the position. I respect everyone until they do something that makes me lose that respect.

This turned into a novel. Sorry.

  56. GOOD MORNING BEBBI, SHIRLEY, LOIS, IBEBOLD, GOLDIE, SCIRISH, RONNIEGRL aka MARYANN, CAROL, LYNN, TINK, ITEACH, MEK, AND ALL WHO FLY IN AFTERWARD

CAROL, This is another memory maker. My parents definitely instilled respect in us.I think fear is another element to this. Now days children don't seem to have any fear of disrespecting rules. Hopefully children don't obey and respect strictly out of fear but I do think it is part of it. If I didn't respect my parents I risk their disappointment in me, or if I am disrespective at work I risk being let go. Starting when I was a tiny child I could never stand any one's feeling being hurt, or seeing them upset for any reason.

Actually, I love the idea of bowing to each other like they did long ago. Taking that time to look at each other, then taking the time to bow before the chatter begins. Perhaps the people bowing didn't necessarily respect each other , but it showed civility.

BEBBI, Thanks for breakfast. I love the meals served on the blog, as I don't seem to gain any weight from them.

ZONA; What a beautiful picture. You are so lucky to have such a beautiful sky.

SHIRLEY; Can you email the appropriate company to complain. If enough people do that then maybe they will make some changes.

  64. Tinka Your sunshine must be coming via the same delivery service as Shirley's CPAP machine.

Bebbi Woo Hoo!! Good job steppin' yourself into #1 today.

Carol Another great blog and lovely photo from Zona. When I was growing up, it was "normal" to show respect to others. Not doing so was not tolerated, not in anyone's home that I knew, and certainly not at school. There were consequences if one was not respectful.

Of course, in those days there were also whole races of people not being shown respect, so the "good old days" were not so good for everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Lani - I am sending our rain your way. Expect it by this afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Iteach - No we are setting records for heavy rainfall this week. It always rains in the fall but nothing like this. The basements are starting to flood. Mine is fine so far. They get rain like this frequently on the North West Coast of the Island. Those small glass fishing balls that are about an inch across are referred to as West Coast raindrops. The mountains usually stop the heavy rain before it gets to Victoria. Vancouver and Seattle gets almost twice the amount we get in a year.

  67. Happy Birthday Lois. Sorry I am late with congratulations.

  68. Tina, I agree with you--when adults tell my children they can call them by their first names, I say "Oh no they can't!" My kids can't bring themselves to do it anyway!

Many years ago when we lived in Korea I was walking on the post and a friend's son, who was about 17, was hanging with a bunch of his friends and when I walked by he said, "Hey Sandie." It REALLY struck me then that that was so inappropriate--like I was his friend??? It made me feel so uncomfortable that I swore right then I would never allow my kids to call an adult by their first name.

    Lois, I'm still a-singing . . . R-E-S-P-E-C-T . . .

  70. Great blog Carol.
    Good morning Owls.
I am watching Obama live doing a news conference.
I highly believe in respect towards all and this includes respecting people whose beliefs are different than mine. When I see adults acting nasty I always wonder what made them this way. Were they abused as children. Were they unloved. And the scariest thing is if an adult doesn't show respect and is acting in an undignified matter just what are they teaching their kids or not teaching them about bullying, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  71. iteach, i think some of my friends want kids to call them by their first names because they say it makes them feel "old"to be called Mrs. ____. But, I enjoy when my kids' friends come over and say, "Hello, Mrs. _____." I think it shows respect and good manners. I already know I'm old! LOL

I'm off to work the concession stand at the boys' basketball game. Then the boys' moms will work the girls' game so I can watch little Aubree play!

    See ya later!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Dreama, I always think that, too. I think that when people are mean to others it means they are unhappy. Sometimes I even say to people, "I'm so sorry you're so unhappy." It usually gets them talking and apologizing!

  73. Delivery Update - if you're interested.

So I spoke with Lee Anne, then Andrew, then Angela and finally Lee Anne who had to call Andrew again. Apparently after it wasn't delivered to me yesterday (although they say they were here and I say bullshit) it ended up in Sydney NS at the other end of the province. It is now being flown to Darmouth, which is in the middle of the province, and then it will be shipped (driven) to me sometime between 8&9 tonight. That is what they said. Just to clarify, it isn't the CPAP machine it's self, just the humidifier that gets attatched to it.

  74. Teaching respect is a very hard thing to do.

Every year my school has a "respect" program that runs for two months.

Teaching respect goes beyond what your parents do at home.

Other factors include your community , what you watch on TV, your role models, the group of friends you associate with, etc.....

  75. The more I think about it, I don't think I have ever heard a child in my town call someone Mr. or Mrs.

  76. Non of my nieces or nephews call me "Aunt". I think the biggest thing that bothered me was that I didn't get any Aunt cards.

I always call my relatives "Aunt" or "Uncle". I just can't imagine not doing it.

  77. Lani I'm waiting on that shipment of chocolate. I found a few stale chocolate chips in the cupboard. It was only about 1/4 cup. WTH? Why would you keep that small an amout? Either throw it in whatever you are baking or eat them, don't bother throwing them back in the cupboard.

  78. Shirley, my husband's side calls everyone "Aunt" or "Uncle".

I have never heard anyone on my dad or mom's side call anyone "Aunt" or "Uncle".

My husband requested that our kids say "Aunt" and "Uncle" and I'm totally fine with it.

So I read your posts to refresh my brain.

I call all of my Aunts and Uncles, aunt and uncle. So do my kids. It is just the way it was always done in my family.

Shirley I am glad you held that shipping companies feet to the fire! Bet they figure out who lied about delivering it. Way to go.

    Ok back to other chores.

  85. Shirley, so sorry about Rose . May she RIP.

I had to fill out a stack of papers at the Doctors office yesterday. One of the questions was" What would you prefer to be called by",Ms. Mrs, Mr, your name etc. I thought that was nice, though I think it should be standard to be called Ms,Mrs or Mr in any professional setting.

    Hi Auntie Iteach!!

  94. CAROL - Great blog!!! Respect and manners are huge in my family. Although I am one of those mothers that would rather be called JODI than Mrs. Huston. When someone calls me that, I say you must want to talk to my mother-in-law. lol!! My mother would say the same thing.....she was always Ma Halverson to all my friends.

  97. At the veterinary hospital we almost always call clients by their 1st names. We live in a very small, mostly middle class city. The clients have never complained. When they come in for their appointments often times their pet is ill and they are worried. I think first names are more intimate and they feel more like we are part of their family and I think they are comforted. I know I like it when my doctors and dentist and staff call me by my first name. I feel like they aren't being aloof.

  101. iteach: Sorry, I'm having another bad day. As you know, the federal government doesn't recognize gay marriages, so even though my marriage is on an equal legal footing to a straight marriage at the state level, there are numerous example of where, at the federal level, my marriage gets discriminated against.

Case in point: as a federal employee, if I was in a straight marriage, I would be entitled to include my spouse in my employee health plan.

I filled out the necessary paperwork today to change my plan to include him, and mailed it in, even thought it will be denied. The reason is the "Defence of Marriage Act" signed by Bill Clinton back in the 90's, which gives the federal government the basis for denying me normal spousal benefits.

Why did I do this? Because the local union rep and I thought that getting denied would be a strong basis for launching a lawsuit against the government and getting DOMA thrown out.

However, I talked to an ACLU lawyer this afternoon, and she turned us down flat. The ACLU won't take the case because... you guessed it... Prop 8 passed, and so "the time just isn't right".

Plus, I've got the flu and feel horrible. :(

    Carol: Unsettled skies, indeed!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Wabbear
if you've had the flu less than 72 hours then you can get a prescription for Tamiflu pills. It will shorten the duration of the flu. Also I suggest going and getting a prescription for Zofran. Zofran used to only be given to cancer patients to prevent vomiting or extreme cases because it was an $800 prescription however it is now in generic form so your insurance should allow coverage of it.

  103. Shirley- so sorry about Rose. The comfort is in knowing that she is at peace and not in pain. Its the living that suffer when someone dies.

Bear- I really can only offer you love. I understand and am appalled as you know.

Mr. Goldie and I went POWER SHOPPING this afternoon and I am done Christmas shopping for the grandchildren and my kids too. I'm way ahead this year and want to be done totally before the end of the month.

Now I have to wrap it all. I hate wrapping worse then ironing!!

    ReplyDelete
  104. GOLDIE - I love to wrap!!! Bring it on!!!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Goldie, at least you have gifts to wrap. Most of my family members want money or gift cards...boring!
Jodi & I will be there, just say the word lol!

  106. WHABBEAR, I am sorry you are sick on top of everything else. One day it really will change, just as it did with biracial marriage. I just hope it is within our lifetime. I guess I was foolish to think this couldn't have happened in California. I wish there would have been stronger ads and more ads in support of NO.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Shirley I'm so sorry to hear about Rose's passing. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Bear I'm sorry you are sick. I bet your stress over the Prop 8 stuff has lowered your resistance.

Goldie Kudos on your "Power Shopping"! :)

HOdi: I need to do the same thing. I start to let my pretend color grow out then I chicken out and change my mind. I wonder how much hair dye I have soaking in my brain. I always have a bottle waiting in my linen closet. A haircut is way overdue. Just ask SLIN. Her hair is always perfect. Not a hair out of place.

  121. Whabbear I am so sorry you are feeling sick and down at the same time. There was a report earlier today and Rachel Maddow had a piece on prop 8, it seems the Mormon church put most of the money into the 527 commercials. Many are calling for the church to loose it's non profit status because of this.

Jodi glad you got your hair colored. I am in much need of that, and I am making a note to send all xmas presents to you and Mary MI to wrap. I swear sometimes Goldie and I were seperated at birth I hate wrapping xmas presents! Putting stickers on the wal-mart bag I am told is not acceptable.

I am still up to my owlhole in paper work here and just discovered I have pages missing!!! I am going to just quit until tomorrow.

  122. I totally dislike wrapping gifts.

One time my brother-in-law looked at his brother (my husband) and said "You look like you wrapped this with your eyes closed."

Then my husband replied, "My wife wrapped them".

    Which was true, so embrassing.

  123. Jodi, I have not started reading it, yet, because this party is a little overwhelming right now.

But I can't wait, I'm really excited about this book.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Thank you Mary, Iteach, Tinka, Lani, Tina, Jodi, Lynn D, Goldie, Just Lin and Ronnie on your thoughts for Sandra, Rose and our family.

After being stuck in another town for a couple hours the humidifier finally arrived about half an hour ago. Seems so unimportant now.

    Night everyone and thanks. ((HUGS))
