Sarah McLachlan singing In The Arm Of The Angel with Josh Groban
Alex’s childhood was troubled from the beginning. His parents divorced when he was very young. When he was in 7th grade, his dad committed suicide. By the time he finished high school, both of his male role models, his grandfather and beloved uncle, had also passed. He and his younger brother were raised by a single mother who did her best.
In grade school, Alex was always in some sort of trouble and his grades were less than stellar. It wasn’t that he couldn’t do the school work. He was just lazy. There was something about him though that drew me to him. Maybe it was his smile or that twinkle in his eye. His Principal did everything in his power to keep him in the school, no matter what he did. He too saw something special in him. The Lady who supervised the lunch room, fondly(?) known as the Lunch Nazi, was always stern with him, but he sure could melt her heart. Okay…..so the Lunch Nazi was me~
I remember one day in particular, he was in so much trouble it was possible that he could be suspended or expelled. I found myself passing him in the hallway in between classes. I got in his way so he couldn’t pass. He was very polite and just stood there waiting for me to move. I looked him straight in the eye and told him that he was a smart boy and I knew he was a good boy and that one day he would grow up to be a good man. All he needed to do was behave now and get good grades. I had faith in him. He smiled that smile of his and went on his way.
Alex made it to 8th grade graduation. Other than my own child, his is the only other 8th grade graduation I have ever attended. I was very proud of him and excited for his future. He went on to High School, but was kicked out after his sophomore year and ended up in a public high school. I remember feeling sick to my stomach when I heard what had happened. All I could do was pray for him.
He managed to graduate in 2006 and even went on to a local University. He got a job at Market Street Grill, one of my favorite restaurants. He had a girlfriend and many, many friends. He moved out of his mom’s house to share a house with a friend. Life was good. He had plans. He was getting good grades, applying himself at school, and even thought about getting his Masters degree later on down the road. December 27th would be his 21st birthday and he was going to Mesquite with his mother and grandmother to celebrate.
Last Monday was a gorgeous day. The sun was out, not a cloud in the sky, and it was in the 50’s. It was a perfect day for Alex to ride his motorcycle to school. Like he always did, Alex put on his full face helmet, long pants, jacket, and gloves. He was riding toward school when a woman in a van made a left hand turn in front of him. She didn’t see him coming and Alex didn’t even have time to hit his brakes. He ran right into her and was killed instantly. Bright, beautiful, smiling Alex was gone.
I had heard about the accident, but I didn’t know it was Alex who died. I came home from work, ate dinner, and was putting the kids’ school pictures in frames when my daughter came up to me and said, “Mom, guess what? Alex died in a car accident!” I am hard of hearing, so I just knew I didn’t hear her right. I asked her to say what she said again. She did. I heard right. It was like a kick in the stomach. I looked at my husband for confirmation. He was nodding his head. He had forgotten to tell me. I couldn’t believe it. I went downstairs to search on the computer for confirmation. There wasn’t any yet. So I sent an email to my friend to tell her about it and cried while I did. This whole week, I think I cried every time I told someone new.
Today was his funeral. My husband and I went together. The church was packed. One of my favorite priests said the mass. His homily was beautiful and comforting. I think half of the people there weren’t even Catholic, but everyone could understand the message that Fr. John was trying to convey: “Look around you at the number of people that Alex touched in some way in such a short time.” He truly was loved by many. After the service, I went to help in the Hall. There were several people there helping to set up for the luncheon after the burial. Everyone pretty much had the same story to tell about Alex. It was always about his beautiful smile and that twinkle in his eye. Like Fr. Tom said, our lives have been changed forever, but Alex’s is just beginning, and we can find comfort in that.

ReplyDeleteTina~ what a beautiful tribute to Alex. I am sorry for your pain, but happy that he was able to touch your heart. It sounds like he was able to accomplish things because of people like you who cared enough to share his smile and believe in him. (((HUGS))
Tina: Great blog about Alex! More later, but I have to get into work early...
ReplyDeleteZona: Your comment yesterday cracked me up as well! A famous dandruff shampoo manufacturer is very interested in the issue, too...
Happy Thursday!!
ReplyDeleteGood morning........
Tina - great tribute to Alex - thank you for sharing him with us today. I am so sorry for your loss.
Lynn - congrats on FIRST!!
ReplyDeletewaving howdy to Lynn D, Shirley, Lois, IBB, Goldie, Whabby and all who land!!
I hope everyone has an excellent day!
:-)
Good Morning Everyone -
ReplyDeleteI wanted to check in today to let my friends know I am still thinking about them even though I am not writing. I still can not sit for longer than a few minutes because of my injured back but I wanted to say "Hi". I missed my computer party last night and it is one of my favourites. Everyone shows the best DVD he/she had made this year. The food is always great. I also cancelled my hair appointment for today. Tomorrow must be a better day.
Tina - As you already know I "took" to Alex as soon as saw him as your avatar. I didn't know who he was but I loved the look of him. I am so sorry he has left this world too soon. I will listen to the song now. I wouldn't have been able to see through my tears to write if I had listened to it first. I will light a candle for him at the Mass they are holding for my mom on the 15th, (her birthday).
Have a great day all owls everywhere. I will check back in tomorrow.
Tina - I love that song. I cry all the way through it. Then when I was in the mood I listened to her sing "I will Remember You".
ReplyDeleteLynn - Congrats on First.
Thanks to all the owls who have sent messages and comments to myspace. I will answer them soon.
Back to the ice pack. Have fun today.
Tina - I also love your video choice. I have heard Sarah sing this with several other people - but Josh has to be, hands down, the BEST!!
ReplyDeletethank you for sharing.......
Tinka - good morning - hope you are feeling better soon.
Happy Thursday Everyone!
ReplyDeleteLYNN~ Congrats on #1! You sure have been getting up early lately! Let's hear it for the West Coast Owls sneaking in before the East Coast Owls!!
TINA~ I was afraid of the ending way before I got to it. I just had a feeling, and my heart was breaking for you, Alex, and all of his many friends, and his Mother and Grandmother.
You wrote such a beautiful tribute to him. I just know that he knew how very much you loved and admired him. He has the most beautiful face. The world lost a most unique young man on
December 1st.
Yes, many teenagers seem to find themselves in trouble too often, but there is just something real and valuable inside them, that if the right person takes notice, they change their course. You were that person for Alex, you Lunch Lady Nazi!
I am so very sorry for your loss. I hope you can just keep all the good memories you have of Alex in your heart, and continue on. That is what Alex would want you to do.
TINKA~ Good to hear from you dear! I am so sorry that your back is still so bad. Remember, time is all that will help this. Glad to see you are using the ice packs. Alternate them with heat though, too. And when I hurt my back last year the DR said to only sit on straight back chairs, no recliners. Maybe that will help you also. My thoughts and prayers are with you for a speedy healing!
And Waving a Good Morning wing to SHIRLEY, LOIS, IBB, GOLDIE, MEK, AND WHABBEAR. And of course to all those you land after me!
From Area 51, Shirley, I really did think you wrote that Top Ten, you do write very humorously! I love reading all your posts, and you do have a special talent in the writing arena!
I am off now to go pamper myself a bit! Mani-Pedi's today!
Until later, my friends,
Peace and Love to All,
Donna Jean
Lynn D~ congrats on first~
ReplyDeleteThank you LynnD, Shirley, No News, IBB, Goldie, MEK, Bear, Tinka, and DonnaJean for your wonderful comments. It really does help to write something like this out.
Tinka, MEK, and DonnaJean~ I didn't choose the video....I sent my draft to DeeDee for her to edit it and it came back to me with that perfect video~ Thank you, DeeDee~
TINA - What a beautiful tribute to Alex....now pass the tissues. I hope you share this with his family...it is perfect!! Those funerals are always the hardest, but like my brother, you now, too have another special angel watching out for you.
ReplyDeleteTina, What a wonderful and loving tribute to Alex. It is so hard to know what to say at times like these, but like you said 'his live is just beginning' and you all have a new angel looking over you. I love the song you chose, but I can't listen to it without crying.
ReplyDeleteOff to read the comments.
Happy Thursday Owls.
ReplyDeleteLynnD, Congrats on 1. Have you given the workers across the street their thrill yet today?
Tinka, (((HUGS))) and I pray that you feel better very soon.
A big hello to Shirley, NN/LL, IBB, Goldie, MEK, Bear, Tina, and Jodi and everyone else who lands. I hope everyone has a great day.
Tina, oops that should read 'his life' sorry.
ReplyDeleteLynnD Congrats on first! By the way, is that coffee in your cup?
ReplyDeleteTina I'm so sorry to hear about Alex's passing. What a tragedy! He looks like he was a very nice young man and with such a winning smile! That was so nice of you to reach out to him and let him know you believed in him. Sometimes that's all a person needs. (((HUGS)))
LL/NoNewz I have been wondering where you went. Good to see you today.
Good afternoon everyone.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't listen to the video, as it brings me to tears all by itself, however, a perfect choice for the story of Alex. In this life we are all gifts to each other. We have much to learn and offer to one another whether in the same family, friends,or perfect strangers. TINA, you offered Alex the opportunity to change his path. We are most fortunate when we have an opportunity for a "stop in the hallway" moment. Thanks for sharing your story.
Yea for LynnD, number 1!
ReplyDeleteTina, what a wonderfully written tribute to a fine young man. I was teary reading about Alex--what a great smile he had! How good of you to be part of the "village" to help him through his difficult years. Love the song, too.
Hey Lois--I was wondering where you've been!
Still raining here today but 70 degrees.
I'm around like a donut. :) Thanks for noticing I was MIA, ladies. I've been trying to keep up on everyone and all the posts.
ReplyDeleteIt's such an insane time of year. Part of me wants to say Bah-hum-bug and the other part wants to go to the mall and sit on Santa's lap. I'm pretty much like frosted shredded wheat cereal about holidays.
Tinkatia, I hope you are fit as a fiddle asap!
Waving a wing to Sandie, Lani, Barb, Just_Lin, Shirley, ibebold, Goldie, Whabbear, Jodi, Tina, Tinkatia, Donna Jean, MEK, Lynn_D and all others who fly by later.
Tinka, so good to see you here. I really hope your back is better FAST! Healing hugs are heading your way~
ReplyDeleteTina I'm like Lani in that I couldn't listen to the song either. This would not be the day for me to start crying as I may not stop for a while.
ReplyDeleteNoNewz I know exactly what you mean. I am a split personality over the holidays, too.
Tinka I'm so sorry that your back is still hurting you. I hope you can come back soon.
Waving a wing at all the owls!
Good Afternoon Everyone!
ReplyDeleteTINA: Thank you for an absolutely beautiful blog. Alex sounded like a wonderful young man. I'm so sorry that his family, as well as your family and the community itself have lost someone who's potential shone as brightly as his smile.
I can just see you stopping Alex in the hall, not letting him pass. I know you got through to him at that moment..your concern, caring and determination made a difference that day. I just know it did.
The song chosen for the blog was truly inspired...just beautiful.
Thank you again for sharing Alex with us today, TINA...I feel like I've really gotten to know him through your writing. Fr. John was right..Alex's life touched so many, and because of your sweet blog today..it continues to do so.
LYNND: Congrats on FIRST! Just what is the "Happy Peanut M&M dance"?? Could this Reeses Piece learn it? ;)
ReplyDeleteSHIRLEY: You goof! Provide my own water eh?? :)
IBB: Don't work to hard! I'm waiting patiently for the package I know you're going to send with all those wonderful baked goods in it! ;)

ReplyDeleteBEAR: I didn't even notice it was QOTD! :)
TINKA: Sending huge, but gentle {{hugs}} to you. Please rest and heal..we miss you so much. Love you tons. :)

The only problem is they give you those itty bitty plates, so I have to go up several times so I can taste everything.. One wedding I went to they had lamb chops (which I love) when I went back up, they were all gone.. that is def the crappy part...
And I love anything with bacon (sorry mo) weather its wrapped around something or in it, or over it.. Love me a bacon

ReplyDeleteYour blog today was written with love, caring and respect. It is so very sad when one so young has to lose their life. It is in times like these that I question why
maniacs are allowed to roam the streets, but a precious young boy has to lose his life..
It seems he was really starting to live his life, to enjoy what life had to offer.
I am glad you knew him, for you will never forgot him, and will always be reminded of his beauty.
And yes, his life is beginning, just in a different way...
Thank you Tina!

ReplyDeleteMy car lease is up 3/09, I am ahead on the payments so I only have two left. Last month my SSO noticed a bubble in my tire, when I called Acura, they told me I was not covered under warranty for the tires, so I would have to buy a new tire, the tire is about $300.00 as you have to get the same tire, cause you have to give the car back.. I have been
ReplyDeletestruggling with this for the last month, as I would rather put the $300.00 towards a new lease...
Today I get a call from Acura telling me something in my power steering is being recalled, and I have to bring my car for service, they would give me a loaner.
Now I am thinking..(which is not always a good thing). So I called Acura and asked them what deals they had on the same car I have know.
Well they have great deal, plus they will eat one of payments that I have left... And the new lease will be less money than I am paying now monthly.
So... I am thinking (again not good) perhaps I will just go for it and get the new car. I have to let them know my Saturday...
I know this, that bubble in my tire is trying me crazy...
I guess I have to think some more

ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the picture on your myspace, I thought it was your son. I had no idea until this very moment that the smiling young man in the picture had passed away.
No words can express the sadness I feel for Alex's family and for you. Sometimes there are those special children, that even though they are not ours, we feel a connection and our mothering instinct is strong. Alex was lucky to have a caring "Nazi Lunch Lady" like you in his life.
Thanks for sharing that story. I am sorry for your loss and wish you many happy memories of your friend.
LynnD: Congrats on first
I hope everyone had a good Thursday. Mine was very good and I walked 8436 steps today. Not so many, but I had Christmas functions to attend.
Going to read comments now.
Tink: I miss you! I hope your back gets better soon. :( I am sad to hear that you can't do all the stuff you enjoy right now.
ReplyDeleteCarol: It takes a little bit of time to get "in the habit", Thanks for saying hi and I look forward to hearing how many you do one day. This time of year is ridiculously hard to do anything extra. At least in my case, it is.
Mary/MI: LOL at your tinkle story. That is funny. But, question, did he tinkle for you?? And, I hope he didn't get your shoes wet..eeps!
ReplyDeleteTina, I just now read your blog and it was a beautiful tribute to that young man.
ReplyDeleteI feel so sad for someone who had so much promise.
I will have to catch up with all the comments over the weekend, but wanted to tell you how touching the story was.
Tina, all I could think of reading your blog was my best friend from HS and college, who died from Lymphoma when he was 22.
ReplyDeleteI've talked about this before, but his death threw me into existential confusion that lasts to this day.
All those "why" questions, and no answers.
It's interesting, though. As I hit mid-middle age, the gnawing existential questions left over from Chris's death have become less acute.
Maybe that's because all of us who were his compatriots are drawing closer to sharing his state of nonexistence. From that perspective, it doesn't seem quite so anomalous anymore.
Hi Bear!
ReplyDeleteGood night, Hooters! I hope everyone has a splendid Friday. I hope I get something accomplished then because I sure didn't do anything constructive today.
ITEACH - I just read your recipe!!! OMG.....I would totally love that cake!! I think this is the cake I will make for Christmas Day!!!
ReplyDeleteGood morning HOoters!!!
