Christmas Cards

by Iteach

Have you ever had a passion for something and you have no idea where it came from?

Well, I do and it is with Christmas cards. In the beginning I would splurge and go to Hallmark to buy my cards. I always thought they had the prettiest cards and I had so much fun picking them out. Then I would fill each card with fun Christmas confetti. Finally, I would go to the post office and buy Christmas stamps for the envelopes. I had always mailed my cards out on Dec. 1st and I did that for about seven years.

After seven years I tried my hand at making cards and I did that for about three years. I would make about 60 cards, fill with confetti, and post with a Christmas stamp. It was a lot of work, but I really enjoyed making them.

Now with all the little ones it is hard to find the time to make the cards. Also, it is impossible to pay for Hallmark at this time. Therefore, I do the cheesy picture ones. I order them from either Wal-Mart or Walgreens and they are very cheap. One of the drawbacks with the picture cards is you can't do confetti. I do miss that.

My mother-in-law always keeps the cards that she gets every year. Last year for Christmas cards she reused the ones that people have sent her. She jazzed them up a little bit and they turned out really nice.

Can you believe that someone just wrote a blog about their passion for Christmas cards? lol

  2. Morning Glories!

Iteach I used to enjoy sending out Christmas cards. One year I even made up my own family story to the twelve days of Christmas. The last few years I have come to the point where I only send out a few.

My list used to be about 100 and I finally decided to hell with that! Now I just send out a few.

The sad part I have partial boxes of xmas cards here and there in the house. I also can not throw out any type of card, xmas, birthday, etc.... I really need to organize the lot and put them away. I figure they will be a treasure trove of history someday. Tho when I pass my kids will probably have a huge bon fire! LOL

I have the last few years thought about just xmas postcards but have not found any locally. Maybe next year.

Waving at anyone who is posting after me!

  7. Good morning Scirish and Lynn D!

    Congrats on 1st Lynn D!

Great blog Iteach! I wish I had the money to buy the perfect card for everyone. Sadly I have to settle for boxed or $1.00 cards.

  9. Shirley! Hey some of the cutest cards are in those dollar boxes!

  10. ITEACH: I woke up one day when I was 13 and decided I had a passion for postcards. I stopped buying them years ago..but I don't know what to do with the thousand or so I have! lol...

  11. I haven't sent Christmas cards in years. I started slacking off when I was working and going to school full time. It was hard to shop, much less do cards. After I graduated, I just never picked it back up. I love getting them, but it always seemed like a chore to do them, maybe because I felt like I had to write a personal note in each one.

    ReplyDelete
  12. SHIRLEY: You're taking the time out to send the cards..that's what matters..not how much they cost!

LYNND: Feathers?? Do you see feathers?? Better get my mirror.. ;)

  13. Zona...Got my fingers crossed that you don't have to use it, but if you do..I hope it works for you...I learned something interesting from the new Dr. You know how you are supposed to try and identify triggers? Well, I mentioned that I seemed to get more headaches at certain times of the year. He told me that that made sense as changes in atmospheric pressure can cause them!! Who knew???

  14. Morning Zona!

I always send Christnas cards to my Aunts and Uncles. It's just my way of staying in touch.

You're right Lynn D, you can get some cute cards in the boxed sets. However once you use the cute ones then you're left with the god awful ugly ones that you wouldn't even want to send to your enemies! Lol! I have several boxes of those.

    ReplyDelete
  15. SCIRISH: It does make sense..I get worse ones during the monsoon season. Another trigger for me? Chocolate. I have to try and stay away from it...oh the pain..lol..

  19. Iteach - EXCELLENT blog today!! and yes, I can believe someone wrote a blog about Christmas cards!!

I LOVE to receive Christmas cards - growing up military and having friends all over the place - it's the one time of year that we "catch up" with each other..

I also used to stand in Hallmark for what seemed like days finding the perfect box of cards!! Then, made cards, then the year my dad died I wrote the "dreaded Christmas Letter" - and haven't looked back...... I write one every year and include a picture of Mr.MEK, me and the "kids"... (don't worry - you guys are NOT getting the letter!! LOL)

I also love RECEIVING Christmas letters - I LOVE reading about what everyone has been doing!!

AND - I always had everything ready to mail on the day after Thanksgiving.......... but - the last couple years - I've been slacking..... in fact, last night - in between marching - I was licking envelopes!! and now everything is ready to go today!!

    YEAH!!!!

Thank you for an excellent blog!!

  20. Good Morning Hooters!

    Congrats on 1st Lynn!

Shirley- that avatar scared me a bit this morning...... LOL

I only buy the boxed cards and yes, and I admit that I look forward to this time of year when all the charities want your money and send you free cards and ribbons and address labels.

I give to who I give, and I am not lured into these places, except the Lakota Indians. For some reason I am on their list and they sent me a dozen cards, ribbons, labels, notepads and wrapping paper! So I felt guilty and sent a little money. OY

iteach, I love getting Christmas Cards, I still send them, but have whittled my list down. I remember sending one to your class last year- MS me your address and I will do it again.

A great idea would be if we all could send at least one card to the soldiers, both overseas, wounded, vets and families. The Red Cross is sponsering this and the address is:

    Holiday Mail for Heroes
    P.O. Box 5456
    Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

We can make a differnce Hooters in someones day! Maybe a great project for your class iteach!

  21. Good morning, owls!

iteach, I actually have a Christmas card story this year! For the first time in my life, I'm doing the customized photo routine! Reason: My friend Rob from Ontario recently digitized a bunch of photos from when he and I and other friends lived in the same house during college... starting 30 years ago!!!

He arranged some of the best of them into a "Christmas card collage"... so I just couldn't resist!

    Have a great day, everybody!

  26. Happy Thursday morning Owls.

Iteach, Fun blog today. Thanks for sparking the Christmas card stories. I love sending and receiving Christmas cards, too.

LynnD, Congrats on #1. You're caching up.

Scirish, Congrats. Ohhhh, boys are sooo much fun. Girls probably are too, I just have no personal experience with them. Our family seems to only be able to produce boys.

Zona, get to bed so you can work on those cards later.

MEK, I love receiving Xmas letters. Every year I vow I am going to write one and I have yet to do it. Maybe next year as my cards are already in the mail.

IBB, I would have thought you would be making cards to compete with your sis.

Bear, I bet your friends and family will love the memories created by your card.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Barb: Not only are your cards already in the mail... they've started arriving!

I'm always in awe of people who get their cards out early! Kudos to you!

SacBarb - I can't wait to receive your card!! :-)

Goldie - thanks for the address..

I really need to get busy!! Mr. MEK is off today and our 'to do' list is longer than my arm!!

  29. FROM AREA 51:

Carol, Christmas Promise is a local organization that provides Christmas gifts to families who would otherwise not have a Christmas. The families are referred by teachers and social workers and we serve approx. 300 families each year. And it is all through word of mouth. They spend no money on advertising and don't have a web site.

The families are adopted by businesses and individuals after reading letters written to "Santa" by a child in the family. I can't read the letters anymore because they reduce me to tears.

I am amazed at the generosity of these children who almost always will list what the rest of the family wants before their own wish.

We collect the gifts that are donated, wrap them and they are delivered on Christmas eve by Santa and elf helpers. These amazing people give up their Christmas eve to do this.

I have worked with this agency since I retired and the reason I chose it is that every single person that works there is a volunteer, from the director to the person who answers the phone (that would be me) so every penny that is donated goes to the families.

In addition to the families, we work throughout the year making and filling about 700 Christmas stockings that go to children in receiving homes and juvenile hall and some schools in depressed areas.

I am working this afternoon so I better get something done at home before I have to leave.

  30. Bear, You may be the first to have received a card from me this year.

  31. MEK: ROFLMAO!!!!!

    Barb: First? Fabulous!

  32. IBB: I've got one too...just sayin'...

  34. Great blog iteach, another passion we share! Sorry I have been missing lately, just very busy. I am on my phone now, will try to come back soon. Everyone's ok, just busy ,,,tis the season and all that jazz!

  35. Iteach, great blog today!

I love receiving photos of friends and family at Christmas time and always look forward to using them in my scrapbooks.

It seems I'm always on the run lately, which puts me ever behind on the things that need to be done at home. I may have to wait to mail my cards while we're out of town!

    Good morning to:

    Lynn D, congrats on 1st!

Scirish, a dead mouse in the house? horrors!

Zona, I buy frames that have mats to hold multiple 4x6 photo to display some of my favorite post cards.

Shirley, I can't think of a single time I've looked at the cards I've received and thought, "gee, they must have bought these at the dollar store". I just feel blessed that, in this crazy, busy world of ours, someone used their precious time to remember me. You can't put a price tag on that.

MEK, I love the Christmas letters too!

Goldie, thanks for the address - I'm adding it to my list of cards to mail from Texas or Oklahoma next week! ;o)

Whabby, would love to see that card and if you'll MS me your address, I'll send you one of MY cheesy photo cards! As I've been to your home, I know I should have it already but (as may be apparent) I'm not organized to figure out what I did with it.

IBB, I hope this year is filled with fun and laughter for you.

Tink, howdy! I think of you every time I see an Elvis decoration or ornament and that's a lot at this time of year!

Barb, got my card yesterday. I too am amazed at those who are so organized. Years ago when I was a very poor single mom, a friend invited me to volunteer with her at a similar charity. I went on weekends and nights my kids were visiting their dad and can't begin to tell you how much helping someone else helped me survive those holidays.

Okay, since it took me so long to write this, I'm sure plenty have flown in behind me and I haven't said good morning to you but I really have to get some work done!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Bebbi, howdy! Oh do I know from busy.......

    ReplyDelete
  37. Okay, signing off to earn my paycheck (for now)! Have a great day everyone!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Outatuune I agree with you. Sometimes just being acknowledged with a card, a smile or a hug is better than any gift you could buy.

I have gone into the Hallmark card section and spent a lot of time looking for the perfect card. Then I move onto the Dollor Store and it's right there.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Iteach~~Good job! As mentioned last week I love snail mail, Christmas or any other time.

Shirley~~Give me a tiny inexpensive card with a personal hand-written message over an elegant, name engraved, no message card any day!

A quick good morning to each of you...the countdown clock is ticking loudly at my house, and I have yet to mail a single card. YIKES~~I ordered my Christmas stamps online and they should arrive today, so no more excuses.

  40. Happy Thursday Everyone!

I have been so MIA lately!

I have been a bit "under the weather" the last few days, and and have just been mostly veggin' on the recliner, except for the daily walks with Olive.

LANI~ from Area 51, thanks for wondering where I was! It is nice to be missed!

SCIRISH~ Congratulations on the new Baby Boy coming into your life. I always had daughters, so when my oldest daughter had my first grandchild, and it was a Boy, I was SCARED! I didn't know anything about little boys. But my Jake has turned out to be the light of my life! He is now 10, and I don't get all the hugs and kisses like I used to, but he has turned into the most wonderful, caring, polite and loving young man. Oh, you are going to have so much fun with your new Grandson!

    Quick Question for Doggie Owners.

Do any of your smaller dogs get carsick?

Olive at first was fine in the car, but now she gets all drooly and even threw up on Monday.

I looked up some info Online, and the vet gave me some tips, but if any of you also have some advice I would love it!

I plan to go visit my daughter & her family in Sacramento on the
12th, and want to bring Olive. It is a 2 hr drive, and I don't want her miserable the whole time. Plus getting herself all wet with drool.

Help me please, if you can! Thanks!

Have a wonderful afternoon, my lovelies,

    Peace and Love,
Donna Jean, Laurie Elizabeth & Miss Olive

  41. It seems there is a cyberwar going on, and again, I am getting it from all ends, personally and having to do with the nest in general.

I have said this before and I shall say it again, the nest is not mine, I do maintain the nest as I have chosen to do so, but by maintaining it, it does not make it mine. Just because a "super" maintains a building it does not make it his/her building.

I do not want my own blog, its to hard, I had one and days would go by before I even visited it, it was lonely to me. I like this joint effort, It is blogging with feedback, and the feedback is so very important. The friendships are most important.

In the process of maintaining this blog I do have to make clear and precise decisions, I try my best to be fair, honest and trustworthy. I try my very best to keep peace, I really really try, without hurting anyone's feelings.

I also don't feel as I maintain this blog that I have to answer to everyone in some of my decisions. You should all know me by now, and trust me. At least I would hope so.

Not everyone will be happy here, that is just life, some things will feel comfy and some won't.

I am going to take a little break, just a couple of days, Daily blogs are all set, so our blog will be fine.. Just need to find the yellow, need to breathe the air..

    Smiles to all

    Lynnd:
Could not leave without giving you congrats on 1, and not far behind, Scirishy on 3. I gotta tell ya, and this might really sound silly, but I love the way you both go for first. It just reminds me of what the nest was all about! The fun of being tedious. Shirley with her counting cracks me up, and Mek with her march..

    Just plain fun!

  45. DJ- I don't know about small dogs, but I used to have an Irish Setter who barfed every time she got in the car. She loved to jump in, but she always got car sick!! The vet gave me some medicine( don't remember what- it was 30 years ago!) for her.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't know, Goldie, but I'm NOT happy about it, and not happy with whoever it is that's second-guessing Carol's decisions.

  49. GOOD AFTERNOON NESTMATES

I have a hard time choosing Christmas cards each year. Partly because I want them to represent my feelings, but also keeping in mind people are of all different faiths and I want them to feel good to the recipient. Thank you ITEACH for your words and I love the picture you chose to go with them.

I am sorry if something ugly is going on with our NEST. I can't imagine what it is. I have only been here a very short time and I have never seen anything ugly. I feel we are all very considerate of each other's feelings, and when something has been written that hasn't been taken well, we discuss it and understand where the other person is coming from, and even learn something from it, and at times even change our way of looking at an issue.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Now I have the right number. I have not had internet service since this morning and I don't know why. I will read the comments and try and catch up.

  51. CAROL - It just breaks my heart that you are hurting. What is going on should have never been brought here. I hope you find your yellow....and don't mind if I mildly stalk you, too!!! THANK YOU for all you do......luv u.....mean it!!! :O) :O) :O)

ITEACH - Great blog. I love sending and receiving cards!!! I have to admit last year I did not send any out....life took over, but this year I'm gonna get my family together this weekend and nail their asses to the couch if I have to, to get our pic taken for our Christmas card. I love doing the photo cards. I always have our names and the kids' ages imprinted on them, so all I really have to do is address the envelopes!!!

I just got back from having lunch and cocktails with a classmate. Had a blast!!!

Not enough time to name everyone today, so just a big HELLO from WESconsin to everyone!!!

I hope everyone has a great night!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. CAROL~ I sent you an email, kinda personal, that is why it isn't on the Nest.

I so agree with everyone about what is "happening" I have no clue, and I really don't care to know.

This is a fantastic place to come to rant, rave, laugh, joke, ask for advice, or need encouragement, share recipes, or even set the table and bring cyber-food (which actually gives me ideas for meals).

Why would anyone want to bring this down???

Go away please, and come back again happy!

    Peace and Love to All,

Donna Jean, Laurie Elizabeth & Olive

  53. Gosh, I'm so out of the loop I had no idea bad things were going on.

    (((((((Carol)))))))
Thanks for doing all you do for us here in the nest and while I'm at it, thanks to everyone who contribrutes to the blogs and comments.

I appreciate having a place to go when I need to take a break from the brick-and-mortar and this is one of my favorite places to go besides online shopping and it helps keep my credit card balance down!! :op~~~~

I hope things calm down quickly. Now to crawl back under my mountains of paperwork.....

  54. Just got back from my walk with my 'fur babies'. I am having a snack and then I will get back to printing pictures for my Christmas cards. I love cards Iteach but my hands won't let me write on them so I have to type letters or labels for my pictures. It isn't as personal but it's the best I can do. I am still not caught up on reading comments. I am sorry if I am missing any posts to me. I am also missing all the blog news but I will get caught up eventually. There are a lot of dreary weeks in January when I will appreciate having something to do. Have a great evening everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Carol, I appreciate you so much!!!!

  56. Well I pop in and I read Carols post. People get a grip. I not sure what is happening either but keep it out of the nest and away from Carol. If you can't get along then move along! Sorry to be blunt but there you have it. I have been known to be a bitch at times and will pull out all of the stops if I have to.

Now I just spent a wonderful two hours cuddling with baby Ritchie and choose not to be drug down with childish behavior from adults.

DonnaJean I would think the vet might have something like doggie dramamine. Not sure but I bet they do.

Scrishy can't wait for you new baby boy to arrive it is divine!

Love you guys. I have to go grossry shopping so I will check back later.

  57. Oh DJ, I almost forgot to mention that I looked into the archives of our dog trainer's yahoo group and found one post (below) that might contain helpful info. I'm sure you've read that most carsickness in dogs is caused by anxiety and how to help Olive associate car rides with good things so won't go into it here.

1-"car has leather and vinyl seat, it was slippery for his tiny body. He was swirled left and right every time the cars turn. He refused to get into the car because of the sickness, and always seem to be uncomfortable during the car ride, until one day we put a comfortable fleece crate pad (the one you use in your dog crate). Once he saw the pad he went to lie down on it and didn't want to move anymore. Ever since then the pad was his official seat in the car, and his carsick miraculously disappeared."

    ReplyDelete
  58. DJ, This won't help with the problem, but it reminded me what would happen when I would pick up my brother's dog from the city to stay at my house when he was out of town. She would throw up exactly one block before we got to my house and exactly one block before my brother's on the way back. It happened every time. I remember thinking, if only we lived one block closer to each other.

I would check with your veterinarian regarding meds and other possible advice. Also, sometimes very short trips at a time help. Some dogs get sick their whole lives and some for a while when they are very young. Going on a short trip to the park might help. We don't know what goes through their heads. She may not be fond of going to the veterinary hospital and thinks that is where she is going. Even going just a few blocks and going right back home.

  62. BON'O: I'm a snail mail junkie myself!

DJ: I've never had a dog that got carsick..but it seems to me it is probably uncertainty more than anything else. Nikki looks terrified when we take her anywhere in the car..I think it might have to do with her being a rescue and that she is never quite sure where she is going. I'd ask the vet for something to calm Olive down...see if that helps.

  63. I always get a little excited about the Christmas cards.

Hubby never opens one up, he always lets me do it.

In fact he doesn't even get them out of the mailbox.

He knows half of the fun is me opening the mailbox to see if there are any.

    Isn't that crazy!!!

  67. All right ladies!

    I know you are lurking!

I want to thank you for all the great comments today about Christmas cards.

  68. THANK YOU, THANK YOU,THANK YOU everyone who shared their advice about Olive's car sickness!

I think it is anxiety too!

I must try short trips, around the block, giving her a treat, etc.

The Big Trip to Sacramento is less than 2 weeks away. So we have to cure this, or give her a med from the vet.

~LANI~ That is just so funny! Wonder what was going through that doggies mind??

~Outatune~ No leather seats for me. Olive is in her crate.

Today she went into it ALL BY HERSELF while I was folding clothes in the bedroom. I think that means she associates it with being a "safe" place. I ignored her, just let her do her thing! I was so happy & proud!

Off now to do dinner, and relax for the evening. Hope you all are doing the same!

    Peace and Love to All!

    Donna Jean & Family!

  69. I am still working on my cards. I love to send them because I love to receive them too.

Zona - I mail my cards to family and friends who live nearby for the same reason, I know they love to get mail.

I am trying to do my labels because I can't address them by hand but I am having trouble lining up the labels with the addresses. I need some help here but I don't know where to find it.

  72. Good evening everyone. I haven't read today's posts yet.Just letting you know we will be flying home tomorrow (United, Tina). We have a 4 hr layover in Chicago! I will def. drag out my laptop! We have had unseasonably warm weather while we were here. Now back to the cold and snow covered Mich.
I just finished packing and will be heading down to the Casino for one more round lol!
This place (The Palazzo)is beautiful. I counted over 8 pools and umpteen whirlpools. I think we helped pay for them lol! No big jackpots, just little ones.
    See yah all later......

DonnaJean, my poodles used to get sick in the car but they don't anymore. I was thinking it was a puppy thing and they grew out of it. Maybe Olive will, too.
