They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To

by Jodi

I love my job for many reasons. Let me count the ways:

1. I only live 4 blocks from the store

2. I get to work with the public. Let's face it I'm a social butterfly and a "chatty kathy"!!!

3. I don't have to drive to Madison, especially after last winter with our record breaking 100 inches of snow.

4. And while most people might not like wearing a uniform, I love it!!!

5. Did I mention that I live only 4 blocks from the store?!!?

It is about #4 that I am writing this blog. I have to wear a uniform top along with black docker style pants every day. This saves so much time. The only decision I have to make is which top to wear, because we have our choice of about 4 different styles. I can order my tops from Kwik Trip, but I purchase my own pants. I have learned over the years that I usually have to replace them about once a year. Off I go to my favorite Shopko store. I know exactly what size and style that I need. Easy!!! I purchased a new pair of work pants just this past spring and low and behold I already have to replace them. Just last Monday I discovered that the knees were getting rather thin, then BAM.....after the next washing, there was the hole!!! Short of getting out a Sharpie pen and coloring my knee black, or better yet, getting out some black electrical tape to repair the damage.....I best get my butt to the store.

I know some of you (TINA) are laughing your fool head off right now, but my job does involve quite a bit of time on my knees. I do the books at the store and that involves getting into our safe, which is under the countertop. I also do my fair share of inventory control. Stocking shelves, updating price tags, and counting inventory.

I seriously wish I could find work pants with double knees. I remember when I was a kid, my Mom bought my brothers blue jeans with double knees. If anyone knows of such a thing, I sure wish you would clue me in.

  3. Morning Glories!

Yay Birdee is here! She got first!

Jodi I don't know whether to laugh or be disgusted that the clothing wears out so fast now. I did have to look at the picture a few times to see what the heck it was tho.

Glad it was you knee and not your hiney!

Have you thought about Carharts or Dickies! Might be an option as they make those for men and I have noticed that mens wear is a bit sturdier.

    Hi IBB!

Mo I don't know what the heck is going on but I miss you everyday you don't show up on the blog! Sending (((Hugs))) and offering a shoulder if you need one.

I am trying to get some coffee down me so I can drag my sorry butt into the food bank.

Be back in a bit gang.

  4. Congratulations #1 Chicken Owl!

    ibebold, so close!!

Lani I LOVE heal a meal! My GMIL did that too, but never called it that before! Boil some taters folks, they clear your sinuses and make fine masheded taters laters!

Lynn_D, did you try the tater? Any kind besides potato pancakes and mashed potatoes work.

Catching up still be back later!

  5. JODI: I don't think there is a solution..except..you'll have to spend less time on your knees!! OH NO!!! ;)

  6. BIRDEEEEE!!! Congrats on FIRST! ;)

IBB: Good to see you taking a day for yourself!

LYNND: How's your eye this morning? The description you posted yesterday made me cringe. Eye stuff does anyway...but that just sounds so unpleasant! Hope everything is better today!

    Good Morning LL/NN!!!

  8. Good Morning Hooters!

Congrats to our beloved ChickenOwl for 1st!

Jodi- I laughed at your comment to Tina. Of course the first person who will comment on all the time you spend on your knees. Sorry, I don't know of any 'sturdy' pants, but I remember those double knee jeans for kids.

It is 9 am and nothing bad has happened to me today! No blood, no objects in eye, no one hitting me with a shopping cart, I remembered my insulin and food and my dog didn't have to pee at 4:30 am.

Just smooth sailing. Of course I have my fingers crossed, am knocking on wook and am saying Hail Mary's (and I'm not even Catholic). :)

Hope everyone has a great day today. It is snowing here in WESconsin and we are supposed to get 2-5 inches (snow tina, get your mind out of the gutter!).

  10. Jodi - great blog today!! I was thinking black duck tape!! LOL..

and - I totally know what you mean about the pants....

just recently, i was taking my mom to run her errands and had on my FAVORITE Old navy jeans (which they don't make anymore - figures)....... and I got in the car and felt movement.. YES, the whole back side ripped out! Thank goodness we were IN THE CAR.. and with every slight move - they ripped more and more...

needless to say - that ended the errand running!!!!!!!

    :-)

  11. Woohoo...hey, my 9 is the first time I have been in the top ten in months! Cool! I have to get up early for work more often!

Jodi...great blog! That is a real perk to live so close to work! I bet you are amazing at what you day and I can see that smile as you serve a customer all the way from here outside of North America!

IBB...happy early birthday! Enjoy your spa day immensely!

Lynn_D..pardon me for asking, but what the heck is a Dickie?

Zona...how's your head? Are you still up jingling your bell? Go to bed!!!

MEK...just saw the tale end of BL last night. Should the person who had to go, been the one to go?

Goldie..hoping today is a much, much better day!

Waving a wing at Birdee and NN/LL and all that fly in later!

I am heading up island for a day or so and am not taking my laptop! See you tomorrow night!

  12. Jodi...oops, sorry...that should be amazing at what you do..not day!!!

  13. VIG - NO, she did not deserve to go home. I was bummed.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Vig- happy travels

As for the biggest loser- I really wish that they would get rid of Vicky. She is such a bitch. Too bad they didn't a few weeks ago when they had the chance. I really liked Renee. But, its game play and picking off the black team is how they are going to do it. Heba irratates me too- but less then she used to. I am now rooting for Michele. JMHO

    ReplyDelete
  15. VIG: Unfortunately, my bell is all jingle-jangled out. Have a safe trip..watch out for those posts. ;)

MEK: I ripped my fave pair of jeans on a chair at the bank. I didn't know this however..and just thought people were smiling at me cuz they were friendly! ;)

GOLDIE: I read Area 51..I was wrong. I need to take my intuition in for a tune up.

    ReplyDelete
  16. one more comment before I have to REALLY GET BUSY!!!

VIG and goldie - about Biggest Loser...

yes, it is about playing the game - but Amy really messed up two weeks ago - we could have had vicky out of there..... and then Vicky got her revenge last week..
I don't want to see an all blue team in the finals - but I have a feeling that is what will happen.

i am also pulling for Michelle!!! ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!

I did enjoy that Renee and Michelle were able to heal their relationship. That is what this show is about - not the nastiness of Vicky and Hebitch..

    okay - gotta get moving!!!

    bbl

    ReplyDelete
  17. Zona - oh my - that is why I was SO thankful that I was IN the car!!

    sorry that happened to you!!

  18. Ok getting ready to head out the door.

My eye is alot better today! Yay! I did not have to try the potato trick but if it keeps up I will and let you all know the results!

Vig Dickies with an S are a brand of work clothing. Jeans, tough slacks, work shirts, coats etc.... I know what you were thinking. Tho I think it is pretty bold to name them Dickies when they are made for men! LOL

Ok kids I have to fly see you all later!

  19. Good Morning All Owls

    Congrats Birdee on being first.

Jodi - You started my day with a smile thank you. I needed it today.

I have someone coming shortly to see about my gutters. I don't want to meet him in my p.j.'s so I will come back later. Have a great day everyone.

  20. Good Morning Everybody! Already too many nesting to list, but SO glad Goldie and Lynn are having a better day and IBB's getting pampered.

Jodi~~With the Sheriff's Office, we all had the same problem. They provided us khaki Dockers and logo polos, but the Dockers were such unflattering flimsy crap, and looked like you'd slept in them after sitting for an hour. We all purchased our own substitutes. It's hard to find the perfect combo...sturdy enough for lots of bending and kneeling (files to the floor) but still 'together' at the end of a long day. But...

Christopher & Banks/cjbanks makes a dynamite indestructible flattering Docker-like slack, but they are heavy stretch...really helps with the knees. They have belt loops, verticle slash front pockets, no back pockets (slimming), come out of the dryer wrinkle-free and stay that way all day! They're not cheap, but if you find a sale, two pair will last you for years.

  21. GOOD MOORNING NESTMATES

HODI, You got a big grin out of me.
I am spoiled. My work (mostly retired) is only a stones throw away. And also not much of a clothing decision. It's scrub tops and pants. Like you, it also requires some knee work. No, not like your night work at ye ole whouse:). As for a remedy for knee problems that occur with both of your jobs, how about knee pads like the hockey players wear. Also, I recommend Aloe for the rug burn on your knees.

It must truly be a pleasure for your customers to be greeted by you. I sincerely mean that.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Congrats on first, Birdee!! You cute little chicken owl, you!!

Jodi, when I first saw the picture of the ripped pants I thought you had kidnapped someone and put a black cloth over their head! I thought, "Whoa! Now this should be an interesting blog!" LOL Thankfully you just ripped your pants. Well, not thankfully, geez, you know what I mean. I think Lani's idea of knee pads like people wear when they're gardening is a good idea!

I just got back from taking Mom for her stress test (ordered after her fainting episode at the fair last month!) and she passed with flying colors. Yippee!

I hope everyone has a great day.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Just checking in. My alarm man has gone. He fixed the 'beeping' sound that was driving me nuts. Now I am waiting for my gardener to give him some instructions and then a rest. This has been a busy week for me. I have decided getting older isn't for the weak.

I am looking forward to my grandson's band concert tonight.

  24. Good afternoon fellow nestees!

Birdee congrats on 1st! You only need 18 more firsts to beat Scirish. Lol!

Hi Ibb, Lynn D, No Newz, Zona, VIG, Mek, Goldie, Tinka, Bon'O, Lani and Sandie.

Great blog Jodi! I agree with Lani and Sandie about the knee pads. However the store that Bon'O mentioned has pants on for $29.95...$10.00 off regular price. Free shipping with no minimum purchase.

  25. Hello Everyone....
Just a quick fly by to say hello, super busy day today!!! I'm about to rip the phone out.........

Jodi....Imagine YOU being on your knees a lot....I suppose you could get some of those Iron on patches and put them on the insides of you pants.

Hope everyone is having a terrific day...Now I MUST go lay down my back is dying....

  26. SANDIE, I am so glad your mom passed her test with flying colors.
At first I thought she was wearing a Berka. (hodi, not your mom)

CAROL, I hope you received flying colors also.

TINK, Weak isn't in your vocabulary.

LYNN, I am glad your eye is better, but keep those potato's handy.

GOLDIE, I am keeping my fingers crossed.

MEK, I always think, when it is too late, why did't I get a second pair of pants that I loved. Because, for sure, they won't be there any more when you are ready for a new pair.

IBB, enjoy the spa for all of us.

HI ZONA, NN/LL, BIRDEE, VIG, BON, SHIRLEY

  28. Got this in an email I was just reading from Robin Rose's Wellness site. Was about to share it just with Iteach, as I immediately thought of her today, but then thought maybe it's worth sharing here:

    Steady Steering Through the Holidays

December is here, and it can be full of holiday busyness and year-end deadlines. Many of us feel the pinch with conflicting priorities and multiple distractions, which can easily lead to a sense that there is just too much to do! Needless to say, when this happens the holiday season can turn into something less than joyous.

To navigate the next month with greater ease, remember:

    # Connect with someone you care about.
    # Connect with yourself. Practice daily solitude. Turn inward and listen.
    # Each morning review your upcoming day. See yourself moving through it with happiness, health and success.
    # Focus on achieving your one most important goal for the day, not all ten.
    # Make time for what's important - the people, traditions, and activities you love.
    # Give yourself permission to decline invitations that aren't a match for you.
    # If you are grieving, honor your loss and grief. Reflect on happy memories and share these with others.
    # Maintain your blood sugar. You set the stage for your entire day's thinking and energy level by what you eat in the morning. Choose protein, complex carbs, and good fats.
    # Move your body. You will significantly improve your ability to manage it all if you walk 20 minutes every day, no matter what. Moving improves your attitude, reduces stress, improves sleep, and clarifies your thinking.
    # Sleep. Take seven slow, deep breaths when you get into bed and you'll feel yourself relax as your body prepares for a restful sleep.

With a bit of planning and some extra self-care, you will find yourself moving through the next month with greater ease.

    Here's to a great December!

  29. Lani~~You are SO right about the 'shoulda bought two'. The pants I found at Christopher Banks were $60 on sale for somewhere around $35. Think I could find them again? Nope, even wrote their HQ.

  30. BON, Thanks for your post. I am glad you posted it for all of us. I certainly needed the get moving especially.

SCIRISH, I wish there was something to help your back. I guess I can only send you a HUG.

SLIN is back tomorrow night, but I don't know how she will blog, as her monitor is no longer in her dinning room. I am dying to know what happened. I have refrained from calling her at her mother's.

  31. BIRDEE - Congrats on 1st!!!

IBB - How was your spa day?

LYNN D - lol @ not my hiney!! I'm sure that is a pic most people would NOT want to see. :D

NO NEWZ - Waving a wing @ you from WESconsin!!!

ZONA - Glad you liked the blog!! I know, right.....only me!!

VIG - Congrats on getting top ten!! lol @ seeing me smile from outside of North America!! Would that be across the Pacific River?!!?

MEK - Congrats on 10!!! So sorry your hiney was exposed....and of course they don't make them anymore!!

GOLDIE - It's 3:47....hoping that your day continued without any hitches!!!

TINKA - Glad I helped to start your day with a smile!!! :O)

BON*BON - I'll have to check it out.....and I'll have what you're having. How about for dinner?

SANDIE - Never thought about knee pads. Glad your Mom's appt went well today!!!

SCIRISH - Those iron on patches would be ok....but they always seem to wear themselves off!!! So sorry your back isn't any better. Take care of yourself!!!

SHIRLEY - Thanks for the info...I hadn't had a chance to look them up yet!!!

MO - Take whatever time you need. Just know we will be here when you're ready to come back. I'll miss your sweet ass!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. SLANI!!! Thanks....and sorry I missed you in my novel. I just had a customer say today that he loves my "smiling eyes"!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Here's another reason I love where I work:

I have a customer that during the holidays like to pay anonymously for other people's gasoline. He got up to my register and asked it #9 had paid, and I said no, so he tacked her gas to his bill and was off. When that customer came up to my register and said she had gasoline on pump 9, I told her that the Christmas Angel paid hers already. She couldn't believe it....and was almost moved to tears. This is something he has done for at least the last five years. He won't let me tell them who paid....he just does it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. BIRDEE - You'll appreciate this one!!! Today our special was $1.00 Jr. Chicken Sandwiches. Well I don't know what the hell my manager was thinking. She thought it would be fun to have the "Chicken Dance" playing continuously on a cd at the front door today. I think she had found about 5 variations....holy hell!!! I don't care if I ever hear that song again. I will never complain about the Christmas music playing again!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks, Lani and Jodi for the kind comments about Mom.

Jodi, you must have a royal chicken headache! Did your body just naturally do the chicken dance all day, too??

What a nice man to do that every year! Not only does the recipient go home with a happy heart but I'm betting his is even happier.

    ReplyDelete
  36. SANDIE - I literally had to go home and take a nap. I really did have a chicken hangover!! At one point this morning we told our customers if they didn't buy a sandwich, then they would have to do the dance before leaving the store!!! It was fun to start with, but after 7 hours, not so much!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hey you Birdee!

Loved your blog.. I so wish I could wear a uniform to work, what a pain in the ass to stare in my closet daily for something to wear.. It seems its a chore..

And I love that you work 4blocks from your house, I work very close as well, it saves on gas and the commute is a breeze.. :O)

    Thanks for writing todays blog..

    :O)

  39. ATTENTION!! Question for all owls:

Do any of you have a facebook? I have several friends (old friends that I just touch base with now and then and really close friends) who keep asking me to make a facebook. They say it's way more fun than myspace and allows you to hook up with friends easier than on my space. I haven't because I don't really want to have two such things (myspace and facebook) and I fear it's another "too much time on the computer" trap.

My boys have facebook and they say it's way better than myspace. Of course, they don't want me to be on facebook. LOL

Anyone here use facebook? What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Bon:
Great post, at this time of year, life can get pretty crazy, thanks for caring enough to post it...

    Mo:
    The stalking begins.. :O)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi Sandie:
I don't have a facebook, however my nephews do, and they love it. I will not sign up for one, as I spend way to much time on the computer as it is, and another site to maintain will probably drive me over the edge.. :O)

I do know that facebook prefers "real" names, so old friends can type in your name as a search and then contact you to reconnect.

My business allows me to stay in contact with many of my old friends, so I really don't think I I need a facebook.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Happy Wednesday afternoon/evening Owls

Jodi, I can so identify with your blog. As you know, I raised 3 boys (4 if you count my hubby) and and very familiar with torn knees. Mervyn's used to sell boys pants that had double knees and were guaranteed and if the pants got a
hole in the knee, they would replace them for FREE (my favorite word). Well, I was on an intimate basis with the sales people because I was there so often. Sometimes when I would take them to the store to get a replacement, I would get the next size. Finally, they got wise to that and they would only exchange them for the same size. So, when I could no longer get new pants for free, I started putting iron-on knee patches on the inside of the knees before they ever wore them. It did help them wear longer. I guess this was the point to this whole story. Try using iron-on knee patches on the inside of the knees.

I haven't read the comments and I'm rushing to leave for my photo shop class. I'll be home very late and I'll have to catch up on the comments then. Have a great day everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sorry meant to add...

  47. Thanks, Carol. I agree with the view that I don't want to spend MORE time on the computer. I've cut down a lot and I don't want to start back up again!

I didn't know you use real full names. That makes me a bit uncomfortable. I do remember now that I once did a search on facebook and there were several people with my name.

Hi sacbarb!! Have fun at your class.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Sandie:
Yes I think that is the whole idea with facebook is to reconnect so if you use a pseudo an old friend won't be able to find you, were as your real name will be easy..

    ReplyDelete
  49. SACBARB - You are the second one to suggest patches. Maybe I'll just have to give it a try!!!

CAROL - lol @ stalking MO!!! I already started that today. :D

  60. Sandie I have a Facebook page but I don't use it that much. I keep it mainly to stay connected with my nephew who is out in BC. I think Myspace is way better. It's more private and I can do more things, like send glitter comments. I was told you can do that on Facebook to but I haven't figured it out. So my vote is don't waste your time. JMHO.

  66. Hi folks,
Sorry I'm so late to the party -- it's been a very busy day at work today!

Jodi - when I first read your blog this morning, the first thing I thought of were the iron-on patches but didn't have time to post.

This probably won't help but thinking about patches reminded me of when my dad was in survival training just before he went to VietNam. He wrote my mom and asked her to send Kotex pads. He and the other airmen sewed them into the knees of their flightsuits for crawling over the rough terrain and barbed wire.

Just thought I'd throw that little tidbit in there -- you never know who might need this info...

    Have a great evening all!

    ReplyDelete
  67. OUTATUUNE, I can't stop laughing about the kotex. I can't stop visualizing HODI with them on her knees. Also a handy way to carry around those needed supplies.

SHIRLEY, I will stay tuned for your upcoming avatars.

    ReplyDelete
  68. JODI: You are so darn funny. When I opened the blog this morning my phone was too small for me to even figure out what the picture was and now I am finally looking on the computer! I don't wear pants out....I out grow them!

Suprised to hear so many of you work on your knees! What are you going to do when you get my age? IF I could get down, I sure wouldn't be able to get back up!

I just read the comments and I am still laughing with the visual of JODI and kotex pads on her knees!

MEK: How many days until McDonalds opens? I stopped there today and thought of you. Did you know that a double cheese-burger is different than a McDouble on the $1.00 menu? The difference is one piece of cheese versus two. I had no idea there was anything even called a McDouble! The double cheese was 1.19.

I am at some kine of make up party my daughter talked me into coming to so she would have more people attending. I am not one that goes to any of these home parties but I gave in on this one. Obviously, it hasn't started yet and is also supposed to start snowing any time. I hope it waits until I get home.

ZONA: Did you stay up all day or finally get some sleep? Hi....

    ReplyDelete
  69. Boo Hoo boo hoo...the sunshine avatar is gone.....Maybe we could have some gingerbread pancakes soon SHIRLEY to help me over your avatar already changing! :)

Can you tell I am putting off going into the other room? I just heard the doorbell so I am hoping they forget I am here and start without me. I guess I am not very much fun!

Tonight is the lighting of the Christmas tree and music in New York. Needless to say, I am recording it.

  70. Shirley, I think the avatar is way cool.

I made it thru the day and nothing too terrible happened! Of course I am still up, but I have faith that the next hour and 1/2 will pass by uneventfull. :)

  71. Great blog Jodi!

I remember when I was little and my mom would iron/sew patches over my holey jeans.

That brought back a good memory.

Kids don't sew up patches in their jeans anymore.

  72. Bonnie, I wear the same pants from CJ Banks that you just described.

I watch for sales and I can get them for about $22. I have a pair on right now.

  73. Sandie, I have facebook.

I just like playing the hatchling game.

Plus, I chat with my sister all the time. She refuses to do myspace. It saves on my phone bill.

  74. Evening owls!

I hope everyone is tucked in for the night!

Jodi I think the kotex knee pads are a great idea! Just think they are absorbent so you can mop up any spills that may come your way.

I am home and exhausted. I am thinking about taking the two weeks after Christmas off from the food bank. I think I need a break. I was overwhelmed and cranky when I left.

Mr. Lynn D takes that two weeks off every year as vacation and I am working on him to just take off and go to the beach for a few days.

I think that will be my Christmas present.

    Off to vegitate.

  75. Dianne:
