Its a number!

What difference does it matter what the scale reads? Why is the number you weigh so important? When Oprah recently announced that she was "back up to 200 pounds" it made national headlines and it went something like this:

"Oprah has ballooned to 200 pounds"

"Oprah has tipped the scales again"

200 pounds? Since when is that ballooning? And why should it be national news?

I have "tipped the scale" at 200 pounds many times in my life, however I have always been healthy and try my best to make good food choices. I am not uncomfortable and do not feel like a balloon at all. I feel like me. I get physical's every year, and each one I have passed with flying colors.

I know it is a good choice in life to keep your weight down, and move your body as much as possible. However with someone like me who has always had weight issues, being a plus size is just my body type.

So Please, don't give me that crap that 200 pounds is ballooning. There are many issues at hand that should make national headlines, and Oprah's weight should not be one of them.

  2. Re posting from Area 51 for DonnaH and Mo.

    Hey Mo!

Would you mind terribly to post another update on the nest for me today? I won't be around when the new blog is posted.

I know if people keep hearing updates, they won't forget to pray. I am also a firm believer that when people are thinking of you, those are like tiny prayers being sent up to heaven. It's the whole positive energy thing, ya know?

Well, we had a very difficult day yesterday.

Dad is confused and he was angry most of the day yesterday. I think he is just now realizing that he's in a nursing home, even though we're calling it a rehab center. He keeps saying that he's in the wrong place and doesn't belong there. He says the people there are all wrong and the equipment is wrong. I think he's remembering bits and pieces of being in the hospital and he woke up one day and he wasn't there anymore. Things really are different there. We came from a state-of-art, multi-million dollar facility to a place where they have to crank the bed to raise and lower it. I think he's getting good care there, for the most part. It's just outdated and old, compared to the new heart wing at the hospital. The family sure isn't treated as well either, but that's okay. I'm not there to be pampered or to make friends.

In case I didn't tell you, he's at Pleasant Hill Manor in Piketon, Ohio. (They have a website.) They were the closest facility that would take someone with a trach.

He breathed 9 whole hours on his own yesterday! That was our one very encouraging sign. The speech therapist, who also works on swallowing and other things like that, got him to eat a lot of applesauce yesterday and he tolerated it very well. Another good sign!

Healthwise, he's showing very tiny improvements each and every day. I'm just so worried about his mind and his mood now! He has had 3 mini strokes in his later years and I fear he may have had another (or more) while in the hospital. I'm told that memory loss is a side-effect of this surgery though. We'll just have to have patience and see.

When Mom was out of the room yesterday, Dad broke down and cried like a baby. He said, "I didn't even know that I had surgery!" I've never seen that man cry in my entire life!!!

He asked me what had happened to him and I explained it to him the best I could. He acted like he appreciated me telling him the truth but he was simply in shock.

He thinks he's healthy, except for a bed sore that is hurting him, and wonders why we're putting him through all this. It's just so, so sad. Especially for my mom. He thinks everything they're doing there is wrong and everyone is "mixed up". I think someone told him he was "mixed up" and he got mad and snapped. After that, he continually said, "I'm not mixed up. Everyone here is! I'm not lazy. I'm not wrong. Everyone else is wrong! You just don't understand! No one understands me. No one cares! Everyone is against me!" This is coming from a man who NEVER complains.

By the way, he's VERY hard to understand but it's better now that the speech lady put a voice thing on his trach and trained him to start talking again.

He told me he wanted to see the Director of Personal so he could get me a job there and then I could "straighten these people out!" That whole ordeal and conversation is actually sort of funny now, but WHEW!, you wouldn't believe how upset he was -- even at me -- and it took so, so much for me to talk him down from it all. My mom was just at a loss. I'm SOOOOOO glad I was there to handle all this.

I told Dad I'd do all I can to help him but it was never enough for him. He yelled at Mom and at me all day. I KNOW we can't take it personally, but it makes the day long and hard, and STRESSFUL!

This is the hardest thing I've EVER gone through. But I certainly don't mean to put the attention on me here. I just feel so incredibly bad for Dad and equally as bad for Mom. It's really hard to watch.

Thank you so much for your friendship, support, love and prayers! I don't know what I'd do without my friends!!!!!

  3. Carol, I sooooo agree. It's a shame, but I cannot think of a single person I know that doesn't have weight or body issues. I have one friend who looks absolutely terrific, and she is self conscious because she thinks she is "pear shaped". The media puts too much emphasis on appearance. Even during the election campaign....I can't count the number of times I heard references to how Sarah Palin looks...What does that have to do with anything???

    ReplyDelete
  4. Oh wow....I certainly won't forget to pray!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Donna continued prayers from my end. This so brings back memories for me when Mr. Lynn D's Mom was put in care with Alzheimers. It is so hard on everyone. (((Hugs)))

Carol I so agree that Oprah's or anyones weight gain or loss is not national news. This stuff drives me crazy.

I did watch the show when she addressed the issue and explained about her Thyroid problems and subsequent weight gain. I have to say that it is dismaying to know that even if you have money that you can still get crappy doctors, especially when it comes to a thyroid condition. Health care broke anyone?

Anyway I watched the show and she decided to address her weight gain because she knew everyone was talking about it. My conclusion on the whole issue was that she was being way to hard on herself and really life and shit happens.

Health is the issue weight is not! Period. I also resent that this issues seems to be a much bigger deal when it is a woman and not a man. People need to get a grip. Now if she had gained and weighed 400 lbs it might be news worthy but 40 pounds come on.

When will this country let these obsessions go? It has gotten worse in the last 10 to 15 years in my opinion and we are seeing a plethora of eating disorders because of it. IMHO

Could I loose weight? Yep and know I need to but that is not news worthy as I am a peri menopausal woman with hormones fluctuating at the drop of a hat. Geee isn't it a fact that most women gain weight during this time in their life? Duh!

Ok this is making me crazy so I will stop there. Off for more coffee.

when I heard that my hair guy in Colorado had commited suicide - I thought - How selfish of HIM!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. LynnD,
"Health is the issue weight is not! Period"

Yep, Exactly, of course I could stand to lose a pound or maybe hundred, however I am healthy, well except for my clear snot, otherwise all is good..

  15. Oh and my embedded corn, which as already grew back :(

    ReplyDelete
  16. Mek,
I agree, I would have reacted the same, sad but true..

    ReplyDelete
  17. I must add to the snot conversation of yesterday!!

    Mary mentioned nose bleeds...

I used to get nose bleeds SO badly - and because it is breakfast time - I won't go into the details of them...

anyway - I had to get my nose packed once in the ER - was told to make an appt with my ENT in two days to have it removed - well - it was a holiday weekend - so i wasn't able to get in until Tuesday - (so, from Thursday to Tuesday!!! my nose was packed)....

when the doctor removed the packing - (I will spare that also) - but I have NEVER seen so much snot in ONE place before..

as he was doing the exam - he said - excuse me - and he dumped the trash - (LMAO) - the smell was SO bad and to have my nose CLEAR like that - well, you know..

anyway - he asked me how I was able to keep that packing in my nose for that long - and I said - The ER doctor told me that YOU had to remove it..........

    YUCK!!!!!!!!!

    Enjoy your breakfast!!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Dianne - I have not really jumped into the frenzy of The Cardinals - but we did CHEER them on - and they still own..

I asked Mr. MEK if I should go find some shirts and he said he'd pass......

They got the crap beat out of them last time they played the Eagles -

it would be fun to see them in the Super Bowl - it seems the same teams go over and over again ....

Zona - LOL at Mr. Z should go to work on Friday!! I'm sure the traffic will be unreal..

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm watching The Today Show - they are having a snowball fight.

    HOW FUN!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Good Morning Hooters!

    Congrats again on 1st scrishy.

Carol- you are right, It is all about being Healthy. There is way too much made of a persons weight.

I personally have put on some weight in the last few years. My leg circulation was a big issue, I too am peri menapausal, and I LOVE food. I am trying now to lose a few pounds because for me it is important because of my diabetes as well as keeping the new found circulation in my legs going with excercise. Is it news worth?? OF course not! Nor should Oprahs weight be. Its her business and no one else's.

Hope everyone has a good day. It is frigging colder than cold here!

RE: SNOT-- I say bull crap to it only being one ounce! Ha.

Mary- I used to get those kinds of bloody noses. I had to have the inside of my nose cauterized. Now there is a smell you will never forget! But it cured it.

Donna- Thanks for the update. I don't know if you know about the site CaringBridge.com, but it is a wonderful way to keep people updated on your dad's progress. They can sign up to get emails everytime you update the journal. I currently recieve one everyday for someone who is hospitalized.
I hope he continues to do well.

  21. Good Morning!!

    CPGEM: You are absolfrickinlutely right!

    SCIRISH: Congrats on FIRST!

DONNA: Continuing to pray for your dad and the rest of your family.

    TINA: Not 100?? 88?? ;)

MEK: My mom had to have her nose packed at the ER..and the packing started going down her throat as soon as she got home. We rushed her back, and they put what looked like a tampon up her nose!! It was a holiday weekend, and she walked around with a string hanging out of her nose for 3 days!! It was funny, but not..ya know??

Good Morning to GOLDIE, LYNND and ITEACH!!

I've got so much stuff to do..but will be back later! Have a wonderful day everyone!

  22. JODI: I hope you are feeling better kiddo. :)

  23. Congrats on first scrirish!!

carol, great blog. i was just thinking about that this morning. My ideal weight is 111.2 - 150.1 according to fitday.com. Now, i have never been to 111 lbs!! 4 years i weighed 135-140 and ppl still commented i was too thin. I think that 111 is ridiculous and just plain dangerous to promote. Definitely not a ´healthy weight´! great blog!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. We did it!

We got rid of our landline phone to save money.

Our personal cell phones are through Verizon. So for an extra ten dollars a month we have a new cell phone that has our landline phone number.

That way in case we have a babysitter we can still call home and check on the kids.

    ReplyDelete
  25. scirish Congrats on first today!

    LynnD Good try!

Donna Thank you for the update. I know this must be so hard and stressful. I'm definitely still PUSHing, too.

Carol Great blog today! I am definitley battling my weight. The fact that I was dipping lobster into butter last night certainly didn't help anything! LOL Anyway, I have let my weight get out of hand and once it does, it is really hard to get it back down again. As for Oprah, it seems everything she does is reported as news worthy. I happen to like her best when she has a little meat on her bones.

  27. Bebbi has inspired me to at least make an effort to move around more. I am no where near doing as much as she does, but I am trying to do a little more each week. Yesterday was not good, though, as I spent too much time in the hairdressers chair and then out to dinner. Oh, well, today is another day.

  28. Goldie I hope you will keep us updated on your experience with Curves. Maybe I will be inspired to exercise too. :)

  29. Happy Thursday Owls.

Carol, I couldn't agree with you more. Why is the media so obsessed with the weight of celebrities? It is assumed that anyone who is overweight is unhealthy. I know several people who are overweight and have normal levels of cholesterol, blood pressure and whatever else they measure. As long as one is healthy, weight shouldn't be THE issue.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Good morning/afternoon everyone.
Thank you for your post today CAROL. I think in general too big an issue is made of how people look.

I have gained weight in the last few years and I have to say I don't feel very comfortable with it. It ends up being around my middle and it is hard on my back and just not as comfortable to move around.

  31. Scirish, congrats on #1.

MEK, congrats on the 1# loss. Are you still working out on the Wii?

  32. Our Governator just gave his State-of-the-State speech and told us all that Kalifornia is in a budget crisis situation because if they don't balance the budget we are going to run out of money very soon (like March). In fact, people will probably be getting IOU's instead of a tax refund. I wonder if I can send an IOU instead of a check for my tax liability? I'm sure NOT!

He also suggested that the Legislators, including him, not be paid their salary or per diem if the next year's budget isn't passed by the deadline. He got no applause for that comment, in fact you could hear a pin drop. What a surprise! We would all love to see that happen, but it never will.

    Maybe it's time to move!

  35. TO DONNA, Even though I don't know you I can almost feel you and your family at the hospital with your dad.

Without going into detail, since this isn't about me, I will say we went through the same thing with my fil, including the stokes. I just deleted a bunch, because I did start in with my story, so I will just say my thoughts and prayers are with you.

  37. BARB, I just glanced at the rest of the comments on my way out and saw your post. Usually I have the news on in the morning. I am ashamed to say I forgot all about Arnold's news conference today.

ferry boats are all around it -

    Sure hope everyone is okay!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. MEK, I am watching the same thing. It is remarkable that the plane didn't come apart upon landing in the water. They are saying it was caused by a flock of geese.

    ReplyDelete
  43. MEK I have been watching the news about the plane that went down in the Hudson. Amazing!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. SacBarb and Just Lin -

    you guys are correct..

    AMAZING.......

It appears that everyone is okay!!

    How scary for those people.....

The pilot did an EXCELLENT job..
used the water like a runway!!

Dumb question, but is Carol near the Hudson River?

    ReplyDelete
  58. iteach~ her agency isn't too far from the Hudson.....but not real close either~

    ReplyDelete
  59. Tina, The first thing I thought , too, was 'which airline is it?' The passengers are standing on the wings of the plane and it looks like they are walking on water. So far it looks like no injuries and all are out safe.

The water taxis really came to the rescue quickly as did the NYFD

OMG water temp 35, air temp 20

  62. MEK, I heard that interview and I got all teary too. He said his 'sticks' are gone, but that is OK if everyone is safe.

Goldie, what airline does your son work for?

    ReplyDelete
  63. doesn't goldie's son work for United?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Tina and SacBarb I think I recall that Goldie's son works for United. I'm pretty sure.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Howdy!!

My son works for Virgin America. He used to work for United. His planes are the same as the one that crashed. Thank god for the training of the crew. The pilot and crew did an amazing job of getting everyone off after the pilot safely 'crash landed' it.

My heart stopped for a second when I heard. I immediately called my son and he answered. He was at his volunteer job (Aids crisis hotline) when it happened in CA. He does have some friends who work for US Airways.

A little favor to my Canadian friends?? KEEP YOUR DAMN GEESE at home!!!!! LOL- I know, I know, its not your fault.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Goldie I'm so glad your son is safe in S.F. The pilot and crew did do an exceptional job getting the plane down and getting people out safely. It is so nice to have some inspirational news for a change.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Mary I'm having ravioli and salad tonight, too, but no garlic bread. :(

    ReplyDelete
  69. Congrats on first, Scirish! Hope your back is better.

Carol, you are so right! The number on the scale isn't as important as your overall health. As for Oprah, I think she sort of asked for all the attention this time. We do seem to watch every move she makes, though.

As you all know, I took a drastic step to stop my weight issues and NOTHING about it has been easy. I mostly did it because I just never felt good, though I had no real health issues (yet). I think now though, that I wasn't feeling good because of the anemia!!

But, I'm also very hard on myself. I see other overweight people and think they look good--but could never see that in myself. So, I needed to do this for me.

Donna, I'm still PUSHing, too. Big hugs to you as you go through this very difficult time.

Tinka, I really hope you feel better soon! I feel awful for you!

I was watching the plane crash, too. Thank God everyone seems to be okay.

Stay warm, owls!! Tomorrow morning is supposed to be colder than it's been in 24 years here! Yikes!

I could not believe ppl were standing on the wings, and when I saw some of them walking alot of them were dry..

I knew your son was based on the west coast, I just could not remember which airline, however I did know it was not US Air..

I guess thats the travel agent in me..

Oh what a day.. and now I am saying goodbye to President Bush.. I will miss him..

This lil HO is gonna stop at the market, make some homemade sauce (with zucchini, onion, roasted garlic and olives) throw it over some mini penne, is gonna toast a baguette rubbed with garlic and sprinkled with EVOO, sit at the dining room table and watch the coconuts go flying by....lol.

And then watch Grey's....anyone wanna join me?

    ReplyDelete
  89. Turtle It sounds great! I'd love to join you! :)

  90. How about a Prosecco to go with the Tomoto, Basil, Mozzarella salad and then a nice Cabernet to go with the pasta?

Not much on dessert myself but could take ya over to Bubbies afterwards~ yeah TinaHO?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Well then, I will be there..

    Everything sounds delish..

    Thanks

    :O)

  92. Kgrl, Love your banter with Tina lol!
Can you hold the meal while I find a non-geese airline?

    ReplyDelete
  93. LYNN...thanks for copying DONNA's post for me ;) I hope that wasn't the reason you missed 1st~

GOLDIE...glad to hear your son is safe. I would imagine anytime you hear anyhting like that your heart skips more then a few beats. Are you adding hearts of palms and ass of rhino to your salad? LOL!

CAROL...I thought of you as soon as I heard of the crash. I hope you didn't have any clients on that plane. And you are beautiful just the way you are.

ITEACH...another day off? Woo Hoo! Or are you going stir crazy with the kids? LOL!

SACBARB...our states unemployment fund ran out of money this month. They had to borrow from the feds to keep making payments. And it is going to get worse as the fate of the auto industry looms over our heads...it is a huge employer here. And one of our banks was sold and may cut 4000 jobs...most from Cleveland. Scary times. Gee, none of our legislators or gov offered to defer their salaries. Another thing we are dealing with are the budget cuts municipalities are facing and they are not salting the streets or plowing as much as they used to. No salt on icy roads and you know what that means.

JUST LIN...thanks for the update on Donna Jean. Glad thye are all well.

ZONA...next time you talk to TINKA, give her my love.

    TINA...u r a crackwhore!!

K-GIRL...aloha! In case you can't see, I am standing here with my plate waiting...

Speaking of food, better go have some dinner.

    BBL

  95. I know how bad the damage can be to a plane. :( You wouldn't believe the damage they can do.

  96. Donna and Tink: I miss the both of you so much.

Tink, I sure hope you get well really soon. It is just not the same around here without you!! (no offense, guys).

  97. J/L: Thanks for the kudos and I am glad that I inspire you! I have lost 56 pounds so far and walked 12,026 steps today! I got a membership to the Y, so I go there. There treadmills have personal TELEVISIONS...lol. I am in heaven!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Bebbi, good job with the steps today!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Bebbi I have a bad back and sciatica so I doubt I will ever walk the number of steps that you do, however, I am making sure I walk more than I used to so that is a good thing. Treadmills with TVs! Cool!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Thanks iteach!

J/L, I think it helps just to walk more. I started last June..walked 2000 - 3000 steps on a GOOD DAY! It took me a few months to even have ONE 7000 day. I never thought I would ever have a 12,000 day! That didn't happen until September or so. So, never say never...just watching makes a huge difference.

    ReplyDelete
  101. J/L: My sister has sciatica. It is very painful. It acts up really bad when she takes long car trips. I am sorry to hear that you have that.

    ReplyDelete
  102. J/L: I said "it is very painful"..like you didn't know that already...shesh. I am so silly. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  103. Bebbi Thanks for the encouragement! My pedometer resets itself at midnight. One night at 11:30 pm I saw that I had only 2,300 steps so I started walking circles around the house until I was up to at least 3,000! I NEVER would have thought to do that before! LOL My cats thought I was nuts!

    ReplyDelete
  104. J/L: Well, only your cats think your nuts. In my cul-de-sac, in warmer weather, I go out and walk around and around in it..until I make my steps..LOL. So the all the neighbors think I am nuts!

    ReplyDelete
  105. For a few hundred more I would probably walk around inside the house..but 500+ requires me to go outside..hehe ;)

    ReplyDelete
  106. Bebbi I may never be able to do as many steps as you do but we all have to start somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  107. J/L: True. We do. and I am so proud of you for doing a little extra. All of it helps..any extra will help for sure.

Take care!! Good night all, sweet dreams, Sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite!

  119. Cause I am particular..... I don't wanna be in a relationship just to have someone beside me. I am ok with being alone, just because I am alone does not mean I am lonely.

If it is meant to be it will happen, until then I will flirt, have fun, and keep open to it....

hmmmm that came off defensive sounding huh? I just had that conversation with my Mom over the holiday....lol

    ReplyDelete
  120. It's good that you are waiting for the right one. It will be worth it when she comes into your life.
