MIND YOUR MATTER

by Scirish

I know it’s early, but grab your coffee and a pen and paper. Ready? Go to the link and see what happens.

I’m sure all of us have had those moments when we just “knew” what the person we were talking to was going to say. Or, we have had other people finish our sentences for us. Why does this happen? Are we really reading minds?

According to Psychology Today, we are, in a way. “Every day, whether we're pushing for a raise, wrestling with the kids over homework, or judging whether a friend really likes our latest redecorating spree, we're reading each other's minds. Drawing on our observations, our databank of memories, our powers of reason, and our wellsprings of emotion, we constantly make educated guesses about what another person is thinking and feeling. Throughout the most heated argument or the most lighthearted chat, we're intently collecting clues to what's on the other person's mind at the moment. "It's a perceptual ability I call mindsight," says Daniel Siegel, UCLA psychiatrist and author of The Mindful Brain. "It allows your brain to create a map of another person's internal state."

That got me thinking; (very quietly of course) do we have a defense against this “mindsight”? What if we don’t want another person to know what we’re thinking? I believe we alter our physical clues, such as tone of voice or body language to throw the other person off track. But what if we couldn’t? What if we all could read minds? Would we be kinder, gentler people? Or would there be havoc and mayhem? What do you think Owls? If you had a choice, would you want to be able to read everyone’s mind? Would it make a difference in your choice if you were the only one that could do it? I just “know” there are going to be some interesting responses.

I know for sure I can read Mr. B's mind! Doesn't take much as I think he's like a short fictional storybook!

  4. I think the snow on back will be melting off fairly soon. I heard on the new's last night, that we should start warming up for Valentine's day! Yippee!!

  13. A very early good morning, owls! We're up to watch the Aussie Open final!

Scrishy: To answer your question... what would it be like to be telepathic, and to live with other telepaths... I HIGHLY recommend Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series. Fantastic!

EBJ: Sad about you missing first. I know, it's devastating.

I don't know if I can read any minds, since I am constantly amazed by the things that some people say!! Although, there are many times when I say...OMG, I knew you were going to say that! Then I say I am either psychic...or psycho!!!

Waving to EBJ, ITEACH and CAROL!

Boy, am I tired from all the cheerleading we did last night at practice!

  20. Good Morning Hooters!
    Congrats on 1st Birdee!

Great blog Scrishy. I did the link and was 1/2 amazed. The first part was on the mark, the second part wasn't even close. What does that mean???

I think that more often than not I can tell you what Mr. Goldie is going to say or how he will respond. But most other people no.

Hope everyone has a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  21. IBB...g'morning! OK, what are the plans for tonight? You can't tease us like that!!!

  24. I'm sorry I missed Cheerleading practice last night. Mr. Goldie thinks I would hurt myself (one of his nicknames for me is 'Grace').

Boy won't he be surprised when I show up tomorrow at game time in my tassles and pom poms!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Goldie... It means you didn't do it right... I was only half amazed... but then realized i did it wrong.... i used the wrong letter for the animal... when I did it right iti is was right on!!!!!

  29. Scirish - Great blog today!!

I did the little test and that was somewhat scary!!! RIGHT ON!!

Mr. MEK and I can read each other's "thought bubbles" as we call them..

i don't think that I would want to be able to read people's minds!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Scirish - how is your puppy doing?!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Good morning, Carol, 'weenie, IBB, Goldie, and MEK!

Yep, an early Saturday. The stupid Australian Open now schedules both the mens' and women's finals at night in Melbourne. That means 12:30 AM for us here on the West Coast, and they replay them at 6 AM.

    So I'm up! LOL!

    Have a great day, y'all!

    ReplyDelete
  32. SCIRISH - Interesting blog, but I must say.....I must be thinking outside the box....cuz my answer was TOTALLY different!! I can read MR. HODI'S mind....it's easy, cuz he always has sex on the brain!!! lol!!

Waving a wing @ BIRDEE (congrats on first!!!), EBJ, ITEACH (I visited my Grandma this morning and gave her an extra hug!!), CAROL, WHABBY, MO (I actually had to put my sunglasses on this morning when I drove Sam to WYSO practice!!!), IBB (have a blast tonight!!), and MEK (congrats on only getting up once last night!!)

    HODI...weekend off? Have fun

Good Morning to all the other owls I haven't spoken to in the last few days. Hope you are all fine. I have been hibernating in my nest for a few days. (I don't think owls hibernate but you know what I mean)

  38. Wow, I made 50. I read your very intellectual blog Scirish. It was great. Now I am going to read the comments.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I haven't clicked on the link yet. I will do that next.

It would be awful if we could really read what each of us is thinking. There would be a lot of hurt feelings. How many times have we carefully worded our responses so as not to offend? "Now that's a baby" is one that comes to mind when we are really thinking other things that are not so nondescript.

I do however think we have a pretty good idea of what our conversation partner is about to say by the look in his/her eyes or how the arms are folding.

It's an interesting topic Scirish. Now I must watch the link and have some breakfast.

    Lol @ Jodi's comment.

    ReplyDelete
  40. VIG - Glad you are feeling better.

Zona-my-baby - Hope you are fine. Call me.

  41. TINKA...it is sooo nice to see you posting and marching! I hope you are well.

  44. Good morning again!

My computer froze after I almost got 1st so I went back to bed. Paula had woken me up and I was laying there at about 5:40 so got up for a few minutes.

Whab, yes I am completely and utterly devastated. Life for me will never be the same.

I have to read the link so will be back!

  45. Doing the Happy Ho dance!

    Aaaahhhhhhhhhhh.

  46. Hi heard from LYNN D and she is ok. Just busy taking care of real life. She did want me to tell you that her house is a CARDS house!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Birdee Good job getting first today but would you please leave that snow outside? I feel so sorry for you. You must be freezing all the time!

EBJ Excellent try from the West Coast!

scirish Great blog today and interesting topic. I hate to be a spoil sport but the site is just a game of probability. I don't want to spoil the trick for anyone so I will leave it at that.

In some ways, I think we "read each other's minds" or at least their body language better before we created language. But we must not have been that good at it or else we would not have had the need to develop language. I think it is accepted knowledge that we only use about 10% of our brain power so maybe we will get much better at nonverbal communication in the future. That would be a cooperative communication, though. I wouldn't want people to read other people's minds without their knowledge and consent. Talk about invasion of privacy!

    ReplyDelete
  48. MO I'm Happy Hodancing for your 69! Thanks for the word on LynnD.

    ReplyDelete
  49. JUST LIN...you totally read my mind!

I was supposed to be at my cousins house about a half an hour ago...oopsies!

See y'all tonight. Maybe my tassicles will be thawed by then ;)

    Have a super Saturday

  50. When I was in grade school, my good friend, Buddy, and I would crank call random numbers and ask the following questions:

    What's 4 plus 5?
    What's 1 plus 8?
    Whats's 6 plus 3?
    What's 2 plus 7?
    What's 5 plus 4?
    What's 8 plus 1?
    What's 3 plus 6?
    What's 7 plus 2?
    Now name a vegetable.

Nine times out of 10 the answer would be the same. What's yours?

  51. Good Morning to BIRRRRRDEE, EBJ, BEAR, HODI, TINK, MO, IBB,CAROL, ITEACH, GOLDIE, MEK & SLIN.

I think we are all at least a little bit intuitive, whether conscious of it or not. Reading exact thoughts would never be right, but sensing something from someone is fair game.

Thank you SCIRISH for your blog. It is a subject that has always fascinated me.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Happy Saturday all !
Hey Birdee congrats on the early worm today!

    EBJ~ congrats on sloppy 2nds!

Scirish~ fun game. I have seen a few of these. Mr Mary always takes the fun out of them by telling me how they work.
He is SO logical lol !

I don't think I would like to read people's thoughts, well maybe Tinaho's , there could be some very interesting things going on in there LOL!!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Mary Ewwwww @ sloppy seconds! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  54. Mary I think I prefer to say I tied for first rather than sloppy seconds !! haha

Congrats to Birrrdee for an impressive edge-out!

Thank you JL, we on the west coast are doomed in the race for first, so I was giving it a shot!

Lynn D is our only hope! Come back Lynn D!!!

Cool blog today Scirish!! My best friend and I have always had a relationship where we say the same things, and many times I would know the phone would ring and it would be her. I remember many times also that I would reach for the phone before it even rang.

I did pick orange kangaroo in Denmark, but a black emu was my other choice soooooo...

Mo, Congrats on 69 today!! I don't watch Idol, but always thought that guy's name was Bob Ice, LMAO!!!

Is he still around? All I remember about him was the mullet.

    ReplyDelete
  55. EBJ, Mine was Emu also. Maybe from watching so much Steve Irwin.

    ReplyDelete
  56. EBJ, LOL. OK~ Congrats on tied to 1st! :+)

Are we done with the cheer-leading
practices? I have to know so I don't forget to put on my special panties!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hello or Good Morning from my corner of life!

BIRDEE: You will be a great mascot but you have to be red..can you make that happen? Your snow will melt off in Florida tomorrow. Start flying now to get there on time!

J/L: We used to do prank calls in the old days before caller ID. One time someone called and said they were the operator and they would be contacting my parents to have their phone taken out. It scared the hell out of me and I never did it again.

IBB; Have a fun evening tonight and don't get into any trouble BUT if you do...tell us all about it. I would think your tips would be pretty good during Super Bowl. One more thing...don't worry, the squad of cheerleaders and twirlers will represent the nest proudly. Heck, we have been swinging tassels for years now.

I sure hope ZONA joins in because she can swing them in two different directions at the same time!! Maybe we should give her a red Cards one and a yellow Steelers one..she would probably be on Leno or at least UTube.

MEK: At least you got a pretty good night sleep. I think that idea of ringing the bell would be fun.

MO: At first I thought you said "thaw your testicles" and it was giving me a hmmmmm moment and then I re-read it. Thanks for the update on LYNND and I am glad to hear she has a CARDS house.

LYNND: Miss your posts. Are you having a Super Bowl party with a Cards house and green M&M's?

JODI: I will be anxious to hear how you liked that movie. I think it looks funny too. Our paper gave it a rating of an "F". I have never seen a rating that low here, so let me know. I love Renee in most everything.

GOLDIE: You won't get hurt tomorrow. We are standing in place for the cheers. The only issue would be if someone throws their baton (with fire) in the air and it hits you in the head---that might hurt!

BEAR: I wanted to tell you about a "new fangled invention" called Tivo or DVR and then you can see your Aussie show on your own time. You are watching it taped anyway at 6AM!

ZONA: You promised to be around today.

TINA: Hope you get everything done today that you have planned. I am resting from your schedule. Don't forget to eat...and not just cottage cheese!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. MARY: One more practice at Happy Hour tonight and then rest for tomorrow's performance.

SCIRISH: Very interesting blog. I don't think I would like to read someone's mind. I do think I am like most of the other owls that I know what Mr D is thinking. My daughter and I think so many things alike and say them at the same time. It freaks my son in law out.

I need to go find something around here to eat. See you all at practice. You do not have to wear your "outfits" to it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. IBB- I did do it right. But my animal that I thought of was a Koala Bear- not a Kangaroo- so it was didn't work. So that made my fruit an apple instead of an orange.... See???? LOL - proof positive my brain works a little short of kilter.

A flaming baton on the head Dianne? Sounds interesting. Ok, I'll trust you all but if I see flames coming at me- I am running for the hills!

    ReplyDelete
  60. TINA: Thanks for my new MS page with all those floating hearts. Also, thanks for my "temporary" avatar of the Cards. Now you realize this is ONLY for this weekend and then I am right back to not cheering for them next season?

You always do such a nice job on my page and I really do appreciate it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. GOLDIE: If you see flames coming at you, instead of running for the hills---run out on the field and make a darn touchdown for our team!

    ReplyDelete
  62. DIANNE - The movie was great!!! I enjoy Renee Zellweger. And the location.....sounded just like MR. JODI'S family in Minnesota!!! Of course, TINA said they probably sound just like me!!

    LANI - Lookin' good!!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. My daughter and I have always been telepathic with each other. 9 times out of ten whatever I cook for dinner when she is coming over is what she had been thinking about earlier. When she was a baby I could be sitting in the living room and all of a sudden I would think of her teddy bear, and then she would call out to me, because she dropped it out of her crib.

    ReplyDelete
  64. JODI, NOTHING surpasses your tassels . I think you will have to register them as lethal weapons! LOL

I thought that movie (can't remember the name) looked like it would be very good.

I figure if I want to see gruesome I can turn on the news.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Dianne Okay, I'm ready for practice. Thank you for sending me the special panties, otherwise I wouldn't be able to let go of this sash and twirl my baton while I twirl my tassles. Good thing we're going to Tampa. Hope it's warm there. BTW, I was born in Tampa.

    ReplyDelete
  66. check out my avatar- its Ms. Pepper and her 'baby Scooby" having doggie ice cream.

Kinda the same glazed look I get when I eat Chocolae Haagen Daaz- :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Goldie Very cute pic of Ms. Pepper eating her ice cream. I know that glazed look well.

  81. Happy Saturday Owls.

Interesting blog Scirish. The game didn't turn out for either. My animal was a Koala too.

Sometimes it might be nice to now what people are thinking, but I don't think I'd want to always know. I definitely wouldn't want people to know what I am thinking.

Birdee and EBJ, congrats on the tie for first :)

  87. I have been doing laundry in my new washer and dryer most of the day. I am so happy to have a working washer.

Carol, I haven't read all the comments, but I did LOL at Birdee dropping poop bombs.

Dianne, I am not going to be able to cheer with the squad tomorrow. I am going out of town for the day to attend a mandatory sorority function. Who the hell would schedule a function on Superbowl Sunday, you ask?? Well, that's what I asked, too. I got no answer.

I hope you all have a great Superbowl Sunday. I will check in when I get home.

  97. scirish~ VERY interesting blog~ I have an easy time reading some people....and get so frustrated when I can't read someone. I have this little talent: when the phone rings, I look at the person who is going to answer it and tell them to say, "Hi (insert name)" They freak out when I'm right. I usually am! Also, my cousin and I can have a full conversation by her guessing on her end of the phone what i'm not saying cuz the Mr is in the room. I also know certain things. I knew I was going to have the twins. I know I'm dying before the Mr. and there is one other thing that recently changed and I no longer have to worry about. I'm a freak....i know~

  99. Tina You may be a freak but not 'cause of that. ;) There have been times I have known things I had no logical way to know, even about people I have never heard of or met. It is weird, the things we can tune into. Makes you wonder how much we could do if we were able to utilize all of our brain and intuitive powers.

  100. Hello everyone!

I'm fixing to head to bed but wanted to stop and say hello. It's been a week of decision-making in our home and hubby and I finally came up with a date for our move to Oklahoma -- May 18th. There will be lots to do with regards to downsizing and making ready for this move, especially since most of our stuff will go into storage for an unspecified amount of time.

Fun blog today, thanks scirish. I kept trying to think of something besides a kangaroo but nothing came to mind ... duh, koala, of course!

Shirley, love those stats. Who knew EBJ would be so "busy" this month, lol!

Really sorry to read Donna/Hartido's status on MS...what a tough time for everyone. I was lucky to have my hubby to lean on when each of my parents passed. Who do you turn to when you both lose a parent in such a short timeframe? My heart and prayers go out to the family.

I'll try to check back in some time in the next few days. Would love to take a whole day just to sit around in my PJ's and veg but I've got walls to paint, carpets to clean, stuff to pack, stuff to sell, other stuff to give away or get rid of. And, I need to find a good placement for my foster dog. He's too anxious to get through a 4-day road trip from here to Oklahoma without serious trama, IMHO.

    Happy new month everyone!
    Hugs,
    Caryn

  101. SSSSSLIN, are you spanking yourself?

TINA.."I'm always thinking about one thing...and I bet you can't guess what it is".... 69?

    ReplyDelete
  102. SLIN, How do you know something about someone if you have never heard of them?

    ReplyDelete
  103. lol Lani~ nooooooooooo~

J/L~ i find that if you really look in someone's eyes....you can see so much~

caryn~ ur going to be so busy~ happy moving~

    ReplyDelete
  104. SSSSSSLAN No, I am not spanking myself! LMAO!!!

I did know the persons name and city they were in. I got a very vivid mental picture of them, that they were an artist, that they were surrounded by a lot of small children (he volunteered at a preschool), that he was having trouble in his marriage and the nature of the trouble. The person who did know him got totally freaked out that I knew that stuff.

  105. Oh, I see SLIN.

I agree about the eyes TINA. I think that is part of the reason I forget names. When I meet someone I am studying their eyes.
