BYE, BYE, BIRDIE

by Just_Lin

Yesterday, there was a little Pine Siskin sitting out on the railing of the deck, all puffed up, with his head turned and beak tucked into his feathers, looking like he was sleeping. All the other birds that congregate at the feeders down in the backyard were gone. After several minutes, I decided to go out and see if he was okay. I got within a couple of feet of him and he was blinking his eyes at me as I spoke quietly to him, then he slowly turned and glided down to the ground. That didn't seem right. He should have flown directly over to one of the branches in the nearby tree. No sooner did he land and take one step, than suddenly a Sharp-shinned Hawk was on top of him and took him away. Sh*t! I was stunned at the quickness of it all. I don't believe the little bird was well (maybe it's the same one that let me pet him the other day) so, in this case, the hawk was culling the heard, so to speak. But still.........

This morning, I saw the hawk return and take up his position in my redwood tree. He sat so straight and still that I probably wouldn't have noticed him if I wasn't looking for him. He is truly a beautiful bird that has every right to live and thrive, yet I found myself out on the deck, waving my arms wildly at him and shouting, "Go away, Evil One!". Not surprisingly, he was completely unfazed. I then grabbed the hose and, with the nozzle set at the highest pressure possible, I was able to spray him with the water and he flew away. Ah, momentary triumph!

There is so much beauty to be found in nature, but sometimes it breaks your heart, too.

  9. G'morning TINA, BEBBI and SCIRISH!

I got scared when I saw the title of the blog...thought our little BIRDEEEEEE was going somewhere away from here. OY!

JUST LIN...I guess you witnessed survival of the fittest. I think I would have done the same thing you did...trying to get the hawk to shoo-fly.

Hope everyone has a HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY! And, don't drink and drive!

  15. I love watching the "Birds of Prey" demonstrations which are given here every year by a raptor rehabilitator to support the medical care and rehabilitation of injured birds so that they maybe released back into the wild. They also care for the birds that cannot be released. I would not be so enthusiastic if I had witnessed the demise of the poor little bird! It's so much better to see them in action in response to a treat that is not alive...Ok, no more rambling...

    ReplyDelete
  16. MEK....WHAT???? Why are you counting road kill???

    ReplyDelete
  17. Tina, first!! LOL

Hi Scirish & Bebbi! Nice try on first but Tina was just too fast today!!

Just/Lin, I feel the same way. You know it has to happen and it's the way of life but I can't stand to see it either!! I can't watch those animal shows that show tigers running down zebras--it upsets me too much. I'm a weenie.

    Hi Mo!

MEK, there you are! I was wondering where you've been!

    Zona, Happy Anniversary!!

Another busy day--this lacrosse booster club work is kicking my arse! (in honor of St. Patrick's day!)

    Happy St. Patrick's Day, everyone!

  20. Morning Glories!

    Congrats on first Tina!!!

I am up but just dragging. My head feels like it weighs 20 pounds!

Just Lin so much in nature is so beautiful but it is sadly wild. You are right it is culling the herd if you will they usually take the weakest and oldest. I think you were just having a reaction to your little friend being taken in front of you.

Shirley I am saying a prayer for your Mum and sending you big (((Hug))) today!

Zona and Mr. Z HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

Don't know where you are going MEK but safe travels.

I better get some coffee and advil. I think I will stay in today so I won't be carried off. It would have to be as big as a Pterodactyl but you never know!

  24. Good Morning Tina, Scirish and Bebbi. Congrats on lst.

Shirley - I think the rule book should say, "Conflicting times equal a tie".

Happy Anniversary Zona and Mr. Zona.

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone. This is the first year that I am not going to the lodge to dress my mom in green and attend their St. Patrick's 'sing-a-long' of Irish songs. That makes me sad. I wonder if they do that in Heaven.

Good Morning Maureen, Mek and Sandie.

Sandie - I love that picture of Luc.

Just_Lin - We have turkey vultures that circle around in the sky looking for prey. They like bigger prey like cats and small dogs. I think they would have a difficult time lifting my 16 pound doggies but I never let Tango and Tia play outside when the big birds are around. I know it's the "circle of life" but it's one part of nature that I strongly dislike. I can't watch the lions 'take down' the baby zebras on the Nature channel. I turn it off as fast as I can.

Breakfast time for me and my babies. They came second today. I don't usually do that. See you all later.

  25. Good Morning Lynn and Ibebold. "Top of the morning to you."

  26. I shut the blog down an hour ago so I guess I might as well march to 50 alone.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Good morning my sweet feathered friends. Remember, owls do a lot of "swooping down" too lol!
A few weeks ago I was watching our bird feeder when a hawk swooshed down and in the blink of an eye snatched one of my feeding birds! :(
Mr Mary said "he has to eat too!"

I am off to the North to visit my brother in the nursing home. It just so happens that the Casino is only a few miles from him ;-)

I have to drive through Hubbardston, an all Irish town. My 2 sons are related to the Dailys there by marriage (my X). They are part Irish and Mex. I know I will skirt the town on my way back. It has the oldest Tavern in Michigan so it is madness on St Patricks Day.
    Have a great all!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Good Morning Hooters!

    Congrats on 1st tina~

Yes J/L nature does have it ways of being both wonderful and sad. Yesterday when walking Pepper there was a dead rabbit on the sidewalk (1/2 a dead rabbit). I said "oh, poor bunny". However, when they are eating my landscaping I am screaming- "kill that f%%#$#$$%^ rabbit!@!

Hope everyone has a great day and HAPPY ST. PATRICK's DAY to all you Irish and Irish followers!!

2 days until the g-kids get here! I am sooooooo excited.

I am also not quite 40 hours yet, but they really like me so far and say that I will be soon!:) yaheee lol

EBJ: I moved back to SC a couple months ago to spend time with my brothers before they moved to California, and just decided to stay here(at least for now lol)

Tinka, I'm so sorry you're missing your Mom today. Thank you for the Luc comments. He's the best dog in the world. Well, besides Tia and Tango. :)

Joey, I'm just going to have to drive over there and go to your restaurant! I'm going to miss Idol tonight, too. Bummer.

    Hi IBB, Mary/mi and Goldie!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Good morning/afternoon, Hooters! Poor bird. I try to be a compassionate eater. No beef, pork or eggs. Pretend chicken & fish isn't. Then I wondered if plants "hurt" when you cut parts of them off. Taking it a step beyond Too Far. I try not to think about it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Tina Congrats on being the first lass in the nest today.

Goldie I LMAO at your conflicted feelings about the rabbits!

MEK Counting roadkill. What a pleasant drive. NOT!

The hawk has returned almost every day (that I see, anyway) and I go out and spray it and it flies away. This morning as I was putting my corned beef on the stove, I looked out and saw that the hawk was enjoying breakfast. It was another small bird. This is not as upsetting to me as when I found a pile of large Eurasian dove feathers. Thank goodness I didn't witness that kill.

    ReplyDelete
  36. BTW, no pigs were skinned during the writing of this blog. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  37. Okay, that 69 was going on for 22 minutes! Time to break it up, already!

    ReplyDelete
  38. J/L: It kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it? Virtually no animal in the wild lives to a ripe old age and dies of "natural" causes. And instead of singling out the weak and helpless for special care and handling, the way we humans try to do for each other, nature knows only the tyranny of the stronger.

From A51: Shirley: Hugs to you on your Mom! Lean on us...

'weenie! I had no idea your best friend's son was the victim of an anti-semitic attack. The whole thing is, at one and the same time, unbelievable, terribly sad, and unforgivable!

Late last night, after reading Mathew Shepard's father's testimonial at the perps' sentencing, I went on the Westboro Baptist Church website (it re-directs you immediately to a site entitled "God Hates Fags"), and perused both their picketing schedule (which is full) and the accompanying blurbs that pass for a rationale.

OMG! If these rationales weren't so pathetic, and if I wasn't aware of the connection between them and real-life horrors like the one perpetuated on 'weenie's friend's son, they would be hysterically funny: They verge on absolute farce and parody! Check them out to get a feel for what I mean...

  39. Hey Whabby...
Does the Lone Star have specials on this day!!????

  40. Hey Just Lin... Hey Mo..

  41. SHIRLEY- Lean on us when you need to. Sorry to hear the news about your Mom, and (((hugs)) to you and good thoughts for her.

It is so nice out that I am going to leave work early and get my butt outside and walking the dog. Hopefully no more dead animals in my path!

  42. Irish blessings to all of you Hooters! Get ur green on, but please do it safely.

    Happy Anniversary to the Zona's.

Shirley: Continued wishes to your Mom.

j/lin: Nature is both amazing and sad. Maybe this is a reminder to stop and take notice of all the beauty that surrounds us.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Awwww Lin! I'm sorry. I honestly know how you feel. Same thing here. Baby bunny hopping along, me all happy to see baby. Hawk swoops in takes him right out of my yard. I was crushed but knew, that's the way the cookie crumbles. :(

Shirley, I'm so sorry to hear the news about your mom. I will keep praying for her and your strength as well.

    Big hugs to all!!!

  44. Happy, happy 25th anniversary to Zonababy and Mr. Zonababy! May the day be filled with love and laughter!

Shirley...good healing thoughts and prayers for your Mom! Big Vancouver Island sized hugs for you!

    Happy St.Patty's Day, Owls!

Leaving my perch from just off to the left of the manor to swoop in to wish you all a Happy St. Patrick's day and leave you some Irish blessings:

    May you always have
    Walls for the winds,
    A roof for the rain,
    Tea beside the fire,
    Laughter to cheer you,
    Those you love near you,
And all your heart might desire!

    May you be in
Heaven a half hour before the
    Devil knows you're dead!

    May your blessings outnumber
    The shamrocks that grow,
    And may trouble avoid you
    Wherever you go.

There are many good reasons for drinking,
One has just entered my head.
If a man doesn't drink when he's living,
How in the hell can he drink when he's dead?

May the best day of your past
Be the worst day of your future.

    ReplyDelete
  45. VIG - Thank you for the Irish Blessing. It made me smile and cry. I have so many happy memories of St. Patrick's day. This is a sad one for me. I have so many pictures of Tango and Tia with mom, all wearing green leis. Come home soon. Love, Tinka

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thank you lynn D, Mary, Sandie, Whabbear, Goldie, Kahonugrl, No Newz and Vig for all you well wishes and hugs for me and mum. I appreciate it. I may need more of those hugs in the future.

The results of the biopsy has come back and it is the thyroids cancer which has spread. So she now has cancer in her eye socket. The dr. wants to talk to mum tomorrow and wants the family there so I am going down with my sister Robin. Not something I am looking forward to.

    Thanks again everyone. ((HUGS))

  47. Happy St. Pat's Day Owls.

J/L, Nature is both beautiful and sometimes harsh. Every year I have a dove couple of doves that nest in my carport. This year they had two babies and for a couple of weeks I have seen the babies hopping around on the ground near the azalea bush by my front door. One of the parents was always on the peak of the roof, watching. One day last week I went out in the afternoon and one of the babies was dead on the walkway. The parents and the other baby were no where to be seen. I was very sad.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Shirley - So sorry to hear about your mom. I will pray for her.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Tina, congrats on beating out scirish bythatmuch.

Shirley, I am so sorry to heard that the news about your Mum is not good. You and your family are in my thoughts.

MEK, Road kill stew for dinner, hmmmm?? Safe travels.

LynnD, I hope you feel better soon.

Mary, Good luck if you stop at the casino.

Waving a wing also to Bebbi, scirish, Mo, Sandie, Tinka, Goldie, Joey, Bonacci, IBB, NN, BIG, Bear, K-girl, Carol and all who land later.

Thanks to everyone who welcomed me back. I missed you all. I still haven't caught up on all the blogs and comments, but I'm working on it.

Have a great day and don't drink too much green beer.

  50. Hey hooters!

I've been out house-hunting with my mother in law today. We found an adorable place, it just went on the market this morning.

Sooo she put in an offer and hopefully will get it.

Thank you to those who sent me messages and comments on MS! I wish everyone a happy St. Patricks day too!

JL I love animals and hate seeing any of them getting eaten or killed. We watch Animal Planet quite a lot, and MR. EBJ is worse than me, he will immediately turn the channel if it shows a lion or snake or something eating another animal.

Nature can be cruel and violent, that is true.

Congrats on 1st today Tina and Irish Lass Eunice!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Happy St. Pat's day!!!

I have LOTS of blogs and comments to catch up on - (since March 10th)

I was able to check myspace and email while away - but since I was using another's computer - I did NOT want to leave a "trail" to the nest - if you know what I mean - (did happen to find a neighbor that had NOT secured their internet - so could leave that quick comment the other night!!)
    :-)

    Tina - congrats on FIRST!!

Just Lin - when I saw the title of the blog - i thought Birdee was leaving us...... poor little birdie!!

natures food chain is an amazing thing - and not always fair.. on our trip - there are HUGE birds feeding on the "current" roadkill and they have to fly away with each car - and I laugh and say out loud that they are probably cussing me out cuz I am "interupting their dinner!!"..

anyway - speaking of dinner - Mr. MEK has arrived with mine - so I better go eat...... I will try very hard to get caught up..

OH - and what are we going to do tonight -

Idol, Biggest Loser and DWTS results!! my goodness!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hi Everyone!

J/LIN: Nature is beautiful, yet often cruel. I don't like survival of the fittest...I think it should be survival of the kindest. Unfortunately, it doesn't work out that way very often..does it?

I am often saddened watching out my window at birds with broken wings..knowing that they will be gone by morning, and I can't do anything to help them escape their fate.

I remember once, when I was a teenager, finding a dove floating in the pool. With tears running down my face, I scooped it out of the water and set it on the decking. I put the net back..and when I turned around, I was stunned to see the dove walking unsteadily around the pool! Within a few minutes, it was drying it's wings and appeared fine. Sometimes...there is a happy ending. :)

Thanks for the great blog today J/LIN!

    ReplyDelete
  53. TINA: Congrats on FIRST...and thank you...

I want to thank everyone for their kind Happy Anniversary wishes, both here on the blog and on MS today. We had a really nice day. Mr. Z took Thursday off, so we will be celebrating with dinner and a movie then.

I almost can't believe I've been married more than half my life. Sheesh. ;)

I hope everyone had a great St. Patrick's Day. I have to feed Nikki (running late..yikes) but will be back to read all comments in a bit!

  62. OH - and I REALLY thought about SEVERAL of my owl friends today..

during a Border Patrol check point today - which is usually a quick - "are you a USA citizen?" you say, yes and off you go

WELL - today,,,,,,,,,,, they had the drug sniffing dogs out (hence, the thinking of several of you)
;-) - we were asked if we were US citizens, if we were the only people in the car, if I didn't mind if he looked in the back of the car, where were we going, how long would we be staying there -

no wonder the traffic was backed up FOREVER.............
BUT - i am just grateful that the border patrol is doing a great job!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. EBJ,
I hope Paula is doing better..

    J/L,
Gosh that poor birdee, it is after all nature, but I don't like it. I can't even watch those Discovery channel shows when all lions are chasing zebras, totally freaks me out. My mom loves those shows, I sometimes think she is secretly thinking my dad is the zebra.. :O)

    ReplyDelete
  64. OH - and FYI -

owls like to swoop down and "take" people's kitty cats for their meal!!!

  78. Mek,
HA! we think alike, so fun.. now we can route for her together..

This is not a spoiler.. did you see her parents were at the show last nite routing her on.. I think they did not want to be involved in the bachelor show, cause of the reputation of the show, they probably did not approve of her doing that show. But DWTS, the were front and center.. However without the bachelor show she would have never gotten DWTS..

    ReplyDelete
  79. Hi Bebbi...

How is the new car, do you love it?

  89. Hello Owls.

I have just met with my painter and I am having a devil of a time picking out a color for my kitchen. So she (yes, the painter is a woman) is going to get small amounts a three different colors and paint a patch of each. I will live with them for a few days and hopefully, then I will be able to decide.

MEK, Welcome back. Glad you are home safely.

Lani & J/L, Sending up healing prayers for your friend.

EBJ, Sorry to hear that Paula isn't well again. Also, you have an email from me.

I hope you all had a good St. Pat's day.

  90. SacBarb I know how difficult it is to pick out the right paint color. It will be helpful to be able to see a patch on your wall and how it goes with your cabinets, counters, and floor.

  91. SHIRLEY...I am sooooo sorry about the results of your mum's tests. We are here for you...always. {{hugs}}

SACBARB...welcome back! What are three colors you are debating about?

TINA...congrats to #1 son and his Lacrosse win!

    SANDIE..no to the flip flops!

    IBB...nice to see you!

LANI and JUST LIN...{{hugs}} to you and or your friend to get thru her chemo.

TINKA...I am sorry that this day was so sad for you. Cherish the memories, as they were so special to you.

I missed most of Idol and DWTS, but I did catch the vote off. I was not surprised or disappointed in the results!

  92. MEK...weclome back! I hope Mr. Mek didn't serve up any roadkill for din-din!!

  93. Welcome back MEK!

I can't believe anyone would bitch about Melissa being on DWTS. She didn't ask to be on the show. I thought it was a great move by ABC, after the way she was treated by "jerkoff".

Like she said last week, cheerleading, and taking ballet as a child, are completely different than ballroom dancing.

Mel B. from the Spice Girls had more of an advantage than Melissa.

Too bad of no one likes it!

We are watching a show about the volcanos of Krakatoa. As Arte Johnson would say, VEDDY INTERESTING.

Did you know that one who studies volcanos is a VOLCANOLOGIST? Sounds more like what Spoke from Star Trek would call himself LOL.

We just gave Paula her fluid and blood pressure pill. Poor little thing is all I can say. I hope she can adjust to her blindness.

So far she is eating good, and knows where her litter box is.

Lani, hugs and good thoughts for your friend.

    {{{Tinka}}} for you too.

  96. Mary in MI... there is a road we take when we go to see my parents, it is near the Benicia Bridge, and is always littered with furniture!

We always laugh, as there are couches,tv's, desks, always.

Don't know why people do it there, but probably because it is somewhat remote.

It gets picked up, then more will come along. It looks awful, but kind of funny, like an outdoor furniture store.

  97. Hi IBB! I think Steve Woz.. will be going home tonight. It starts here in about 10 min, but we tune in at the end to see who gets sent home.

  100. Mo, She is getting two greens and a taupe, all in very light shades. My kitchen is small, so I am sticking with light colors. I was originally going to go with a light yellow, but none of them looked good with the new light cabinets. The ceiling will be a white linen color.

  101. That sounds nice Barb...

J/L I had to laugh when I read your blog today. I sent Carol a blog two days ago about birds. :0 We must have birds on the brain.
