I was shopping at Target the other day and I had been there quite a while. I was having trouble finding the items I was looking for and it was late in the day. I was tired and hungry. I went down an aisle where a nice looking young woman was standing, examining something she picked up off the shelf. I could hear a man's voice in the distance, who was in a loud and continuous conversation. The young woman started yelling, loudly, "Joel! Joel!" and she repeated his name every few seconds, like some kind of mantra, until the man's voice got closer and louder and he finally was there, in our aisle.
The man never stopped talking on his cell phone for even a second, just continued on as his wife continued perusing the items on the shelf. He was talking unbelievably loudly on that phone, yelling really, and I was amazed that he felt like it was fine for me to hear every word of his conversation. Well, not only me, but anyone who would have been several aisles away, too. I moved two aisles over and tried to concentrate on my mission but I could still hear that irritating voice. How long could that conversation go on?
As time went by, I continued to hear him in the distance and then I heard that voice coming closer and closer. Crap! There they were, back in my aisle again, him continuing to talk/yell into his cell phone. I know I was not smiling as they slowly worked their way past me in the aisle. This was just as annoying as if a TV or radiio was blaring right next to my ear! I couldn't get over how oblivious he was to people around him or how ignorant he was of how annoying and rude he was being. He had been at it for at least 15 minutes that I know of and there was no sign that he was going to quit anytime soon. As he was standing at the opposite end of the aisle, continuing his conversation, the words finally escaped my lips. "Just shut the f*** up!" I couldn't help myself and, fortunately, he couldn't hear me over his own voice. I wanted to go over there and just smack that phone right out of his hand!
They have now made it illegal in California for people to talk on their cell phones while driving. I sure wish they could do something about the noise pollution, too. I know cell phones can be a blessing at times, especially in an emergency, but they can also be a curse. How do you feel about them?
Morning!
ReplyDeletePhew! Now that's out of the way...
ReplyDelete(P.S. Please note, I'm probably winning. I've been first like three times or maybe four. LOL!)
Just_Lin, I'd have been right there ready to lay a smack-down! I hate cell phones. Refuse to get one.
ReplyDeleteFunny thing happened when Mr. Lane got his. I tried calling him, got voicemail. When he finally called back, I said, "It's hooked to your pants. How could you not answer?"
He said, "I was in the gas station and I had it on manner mode."
"Exactly, how did you not hear it?"
When he said "manner" I thought he said, "manor" as in a loud manor door bell chime. LOL!
After he explained what manner he was talking about, we laughed at how dumb I am. But then I was thinking, does a phone really have to remind you of your manners? That's kind of sad, huh?
Have a great day everyone!
Good Morning Hooters!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to you Lois on #1
As anyone who knows me personally (including JODI) I never have my cell phone on! I use it when I need to, not to chat and certainly not in public or when driving. My family is always yelling at me to turn on your cell, why do you have one? Well I have it for MY convenience!
HAve you heard about the story in the news with the woman who was breast feeding and TEXTING while driving?? OMG
Morning Glories!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on first Lois! I think you might just be winning on this one!
Ok I am a very cranky bitch this morning and reading your story Just Lin I wanted to go pull that losers ear right off his head!
Most of you know my feelings on cell phones and texting is becoming one of my pet peeves to. Call me old fashioned but these devices are just adding to the damned rudeness and incivility in our society. They drive me crazy. I just know someday I will end up in jail because I stomped a cell phone to death!
I have one because Mr. Lynn D insisted. It is on most of the time but I usually miss calls or it needs charged.
It really irritates me that I have to feed the damn thing, monitor it and clean it. If I wanted more kids I would get knocked up again.
Told you I was cranky.
Good morning!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to NN for 1st this morning!
Hi Goldie and Lynn!
JL this is a great blog! I was just telling a co-worker the other day how annoyed I was while at the store recently.
There was a man who was doing the shopping, and apparently had no clue what he should get.
As he went down each aisle, he was asking the person on the other end if he should get this or that one.
He obviously could not make a decision about which type of mustard or what flavor of yougurt to get.
It was sooooooo annoying, I did not want to hear his loud, boring conversation.
I cannot tell you how many times at work I will have a patient in my room, and their cell phone will go off and they will answer it, or will be texting while I'm trying to take their blood pressure or something.
Sometimes I will just stop what I'm doing, and will do something else til they end the call.
I have a cell phone which I seldom use. I have the lowest monthly plan ($20).
I get 60 anytime minutes and 500 weekend minutes. I just checked it and have 49 anytime minutes left, and it will start over on the 8th.
I call mine an old clunker, I've had it about 5 years, and it doesn't take pictures or video.
MR. EBJ is completely opposite, he has his cell phone on all the time. His phone is fancy, has all the bells and whistles, and probably has the capabality of launching the space shuttle. LOL
Neither one of us know how to tet. I'm not even sure if I can do that on my phone or not.
Hope everyone has a nice day today!
Good Morning Lois - Congrats on 1st. I haven't been first since last year. Now that Tia sleeps until 7:00 I guess I never will be again.
ReplyDeleteAre all the owls sleeping in this morning?
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Goldie, Lynn, and East Bay J. I will be back in a few minutes to read the blog.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on first, NN~
ReplyDeleteI love my cell phone, J/L~ I use it all the time....i use it too much~ But ever since LynnD started talking about how rude people are with them, I've been more careful to use it away from people. I do use it once I'm on a plane and seated to let family know I made the flight.....kinda have no choice....and I do use it in the car...only real quiet time I have left....but I no longer use it in the bathroom (at work!) :)~
LynnD~ you just make me laugh! thank you~
Good Morning Goldie, EBJ, and Tinka~
I'm off to the doctor~
Sorry, owls! I'm with Tina... love my cell, and the opportunities it brings, especially in the coordination department.
ReplyDeleteAt Christmas, I flew back into LAX while Mr Whabbear was driving down from San Francisco. Courtesy of our cells, we were able to coordinate him picking me up perfectly, and we were on our way to Palm Springs!
I can't wait for Garmin's Nuviphone to come out; it should be sometime this spring. Imagine: a phone, a personal navigation device, and a portable internet access device all in one!
Bring on the NuviPhone! :)
EBJ Mr. Lynn D has a phone with all the bells and whistles attached. His is assigned through work. He wanted me to find one just like it for his own personal use. Well $300.00 dollars for this damn thing. I told him no way! He can get one like mine, which has more things on it than I know how to use.
ReplyDeleteI keep getting calls for some idiot named Leon Mathers (wondering if he is related to Jerry) I digress. These are obvious bill collectors and I have told them twice he no longer has this number. They keep calling. Mr. Lynn D informed me I can block the calls. However he did not inform me how to do it! I am still looking for the damn book that came with the phone so I can figure this little trick out. For now I just ignore them even tho I realize they are wasting my damn minutes.
Tina glad I made you laugh. You don't want to hear my rant about call waiting. That little feature makes my hair stand on end.
FORETEEN
ReplyDeletehappy monday..
ReplyDeleteLois - congrats on FIRST.
Just Lin - great blog..... as you all know - I just got finished working a MAJOR Golf Tournament and you would be surprised (maybe not) at the people that think cellphones are okay on the course.
Heck - I even told you all about the guy in the port-a-potty next to me..... I found that the GROSSEST thing ever.....
I can never hear my cell ring if it's in my purse -
I try to have "cell phone manners" everywhere that I am......
waving howdy to Lois, Goldie, Lynn, EBJ, Tinka, Tina, Whabby and all who land......
I hope everyone has an excellent day!!
:-)
Yea, Lois! Congrats on first!
ReplyDeleteJ/L, I would have been angry at that guy, too! I am always AMAZED (Bachelor is on tonight--J/L, EBJ, Mo and Carol!!)at people who seem to think you want to hear their converstation!!
However, I agree with Tina and Whabbear, I LOVE my cell phone. I have the Blackberry Curve and it keeps track of my appointments and tells me where I'm supposed to be. And, because I have kids, it's great to know I can touch base with them at any time.
I am very aware of when I use it though, and will ignore calls if I'm somewhere where it would be rude to answer, unless it's one of my kids and then I'll just quickly say I'll call them back if it's not an emergency.
Since I have teenagers, I'm quite the text woman, too.
Okay, now that you all hate me ... LOL!
Oh! And when I go to any appointment, volunteer at school, etc. I always put my ringer on quiet or vibrate. I try to be a responsible cell phone addict. :)
ReplyDeleteGood Morning - Tina, Whabbear, and Sandie. I am watching "Regis" but I want to march to 25.
ReplyDeleteSee you in 15 minutes. I am running slowly this morning. I still have to read the blog.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Hooters! I had a feeling there would be very strong feelings about cell phones. I was just using mine this morning to talk to Custard. Both he and my mother require long distance calls, my son and daughter are far enough away to be toll calls. Therefore, I find cell phones are my best option for calling them. Otherwise, my phone is turned off. Once in a while I will use it to coordinate a meeting with someone else. I do like having it in case of an emergency, though. I find it super annoying when people don't have them turned off in movie theaters or during live performances. Some people are just plain rude!
ReplyDeleteLl/NN Congrats on being first today. I'm happy to see you. I've been wondering where you were. :)
Oh, I do use my phone once in a while to send Custard a photo of myself so he won't forget what I look like. LOL The newer phones probably take better pictures.
Just_Lin - Great blog today and oh so true. I think cell phones are great if used with sensitivity to others. I think everyone who is driving alone or going for a walk is safer with a cell phone in his/her purse for emergency purposes.
ReplyDeleteI agree. There are people who don't seem to mind the fact that everyone around them can overhear their conversations.
Last year I was in a Health clinic surrounded by people who obviously were not well. One man who had a toddler with him allowed the child to disturb everyone and everything while he stood in the middle of the floor arguing with his wife over the cell phone. I couldn't believe that he wasn't stopped by someone. By the time he was taken in to see the doctor, the toddler had made a mess of the drapes and had destroyed most of the magazines. He was totally unaware of any of it.
Most doctor's offices have signs up now with a big X over a cell phone. Of course that doesn't stop some.
I am heading out the door shortly. The sun is shining and it's a great day to be outside.
Have a great day everyone.
Hi Just_Lin - We must have been typing at the same time.
ReplyDeleteHi Tinka! Congrats on your marches today. It is raining here. I hope you enjoy your beautiful day. :)
ReplyDeleteTinka That could be a whole other blog; people who do not control or "parent" their children! Super annoying.
ReplyDeleteSorry Just_Lin and everyone, I've been spending so much goof off time playing with my old friends from Chicago on that darn Facebook. I've had little time for other fun online adventures. With the weather on the brink of a break here, I'll be off and running...happily away from the computer and house. I have cabin fever something awful! The garden, the horseback riding, the state parks that are now open, yay!!!
ReplyDeleteSending a big hooter wave to Goldie, Just_Lin, Lynn D, East Bay J, Tink, Tina, Bear, MEK, Sandie, and all who fly by later. xoxo
Just Lin.....That picture is a wedding cake topper!!!! How do I know? Cuz I spent one entire afternoon looking at every single cake topper that was ever made and we STILL have not made a decision!! Is it legal to kill the bride before the wedding????
ReplyDeleteI do know what you mean about rude people on their cell phones!!!! Just the other day, I was in line in Walmart and the guy a couple of people behind me was having a fight with his girlfriend on his cell phone!! He was swearing his head off and their were young children all around him. He finally called her the "C" word and a big burly guy behind him told him "Hey man, peoples don't wanna hear that shit. Take it outside" Several people ( including me) gave him thumbs up!
Tinka, at work we have a picture of a cell phone with a red line through it, but people still use their phones. And below the picture it says to please turn your cell phone off while in the clinic.
ReplyDeleteThere is something about a cell phone that can interfere with the machine while doing an EKG. I am always telling people to make sure it is turned off for their EKG, most of them do. But, I've had them ring right while running the test, even when the patient has told me the phone was off.
It is sooo annoying!
NN...I forgot to say congrats on first!!!
ReplyDeleteSandie... MR. EBJ just called from work and I told him that the Bachelor season finale is on tonight.
ReplyDeleteAs would be expected, his reply was full of bad words LOL. He is sooo funny!
Scirish when is your wedding???
ReplyDeleteJust_Lin - I am home, having a Slim Fast and going down for a nap. First I think I will march to 50. Is anyone in the nest going to march with me?
ReplyDeleteI guess there wasn't. See you all later.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I am with Whabbear and Tina. Here in Hawaii very few people have land lines in their house. Of my closest friends here (a randoom top 12) not ONE has a house phone.
ReplyDeleteI love my Instinct. I can get internet, retrieve my email, GPS/Navigation, Maps, Directions it will even pick out a place to eat dinner based on cost, taste or distance...lol. While eating that lunch or dinner I can watch TV, listen to the radio, take pictures, play on MySpace or Facebook or Youtube. I can play Sudoku, PacMan, Bejeweled, Poker and even Nascar Srint!!! lol It is also an MP3 player.
I have the everything plan so I have unlimited minutes, text, and unlimited access to the internet.
Best yet, work pays for half....
Now the downside... I am on a phone (sometimes two) all day 5 days a week, and because of my job I am on call on the weekends. It really sucks to be awakened at 6am on a weekend or be 4000 miles away on vacation and be tracked down by a device that is 4" long and 3/8" wide...lol. So as much as I love this cell and what it can do alot of the time I just wanna chuck it into the ocean off Diamondhead.
Thinking about this I regress to my childhood and remember watching the Jetsons and thinking....wow how cool would it be to have something to talk on that you carry around with you....who woulda thunk huh?
Just Lin last week someone came into the office on one of our busy days and his cell phone rang. Instead of telling the person he would call them back he excused himself and went over by the door to talk to the person. He was about five minutes which wasn't that long, but in that time I could have had his information in the computer and been writing him a check, There were other people waiting too. It annoyed me but I didn't say anything.
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon everyone.
ReplyDeleteJUST LIN - Great blog!! I work in retail, and I ALWAYS give the customer on their cell phones the BEST possible customer service!!! I go right ahead and ask..."Do you have gasoline today? Would you care for a sandwich with that? And I can't for get the all important come back statement....like, Come back on Wednesday for our $1.00 special!!" They get it ALL!!! Just like all the other jerks I have to put up with I kill 'em with kindness!!!
ReplyDeleteAs most of you know....I am the phonewhore!!! I love my cell phone. I use my landline during the day (because I have unlimited long distance from home), but I have unlimited nights and weekend minutes on my cell!!! It allows me to stay connected with all my favorite HO's!!! Thanks to TINA, I had to add unlimited texting to my plan.
GOLDIE - I'm still available for those lessons!!! And I don't know if you saw it in area 51, but I have off this Friday....where would you like to meet for lunch?
NN/LL!! Congrats on first!!! And I adore your big "hooter wave"....:O)
I best get back to my youngest. He stayed home sick today.
We were visiting a friend of ours, I think it was in August or so.
ReplyDeleteHe had just gotten an Iphone and was looking up the traffic for us since we were going to go home.
We usually go on the 2 lane hiway that goes right past Infineon Raceway (we still call it Sears Point!).
The Iphone showed that there was lots of traffic, as there was an event at the track that day.
We decided to go that way anyway. BIG MISTAKE! The Iphone was right on, the traffic was horrendous. MR. EBJ was able to turn us around, and we went home the other, longer way.
My dad recently got an Iphone, and now, MR. EBJ wants one!
He has dropped so many hints that I told him a couple days ago to just go get one already.
EBJ:
ReplyDeleteIf you are already with Sprint or another carrier, Look at the Samsung Instinct or similiar name at the other carriers. It does almost everything the iphone does
and doesn't cost nearly as much as the iphone and the plans are cheaper as well.
Scirish- Here is a cake topper story for you.
ReplyDeleteWhen I got married I never really gave much thought to the cake topper. I went to Wal-Mart and looked at one for about one minute. I thought that is cute and bought it.
Then at the wedding everyone noticed that I picked a cake topper that was a hispanic couple. So I took a closer look and noticed they were right. lol
It didn't bother me, because I still thought it was cute.
At my grandma's church service an elderly lady's cell phone went off during the funeral. The poor lady startred to cry, because she had no idea how to turn it off.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Goldie. Half the time I have no idea where it is or I don't have it turned on.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is during family reading night at school when all the parents are texting instead of listening to their child read.
ReplyDeleteKgirl thanx for the info! I will tell him to check into a different phone.
ReplyDeleteHe has AT&T, I have T-Mobile. I found out that there are a couple services that give discounts for employees where I work, so we may be changing.

ReplyDeleteHey gang!
ReplyDeleteIteach that last post just about sent me over the edge! Texting while your child is reading or at any time your attention is required is just so wrong. It is part of being a parent, whether you are bored out of gourd or not. Put down the phone and pay attention.
I watched the President address congress and was stunned by how many people were texting and twitter tweeting. There is something so wrong about this. It is like we are losing any civility or manners we need to keep a sane society. IMHO
Yikes I think my blood pressure just jumped sky high. LOL
EBJ:
ReplyDeleteAnother thing to consider is AT&T has the exclusive with iPhone right now but I beleive their two year exclusive contract expires later this year (unless they renew it) so you should see other carriers handling the iPhone in the near future and the prices normally go down when that happens.
Sorry EBJ: I should have looked this up first....apparently AT&T paid off Apple and got an extension into 2010 but the prices of the phones will be reduced, but all my friends that have iphones say that the monthly data plan runs them about $150 a month....that's kinda pricey if you ask me....
ReplyDelete"In exchange for its payout, AT&T got a year extension, into 2010, on its exclusive distribution deal with Apple, people familiar with the matter say. Sources asked to not be named because the terms are confidential," Cauley reports.
J/LIN: Mr. Z and I just got our cell phones last June. I still don't know half of the things it does..but I love it! We have free calling to each other and free nights and weekends so we seldom use up the anytime minutes. Now texting..that's a whole different story. I usually get down to 3 or 4 texts by the end of the month. I love to text.
ReplyDeleteI've learned so much about this phone from others..TINA taught me all about sending and forwarding pics, and how to three way call..DIANNE showed me how to send puzzle texts..and JODI just taught me how to set the phone so a different picture comes up for each person that calls. Kewl! Thanks guys!! :D
The only problem I have with people talking on their cells is at the movies. I don't really mind in stores..unless they are talking really loud. It is kinda embarrassing when you hear someone next to you talking and you turn to answer..and find that they are on the phone. Oooops. ;)
Great blog today J/LIN..thank you!!

ReplyDeleteLois Lane,
ReplyDeleteHi! Congrats on first.. "manner mode" .. LOL.. :O)
J/L,
I love my cell phone I would be lost without it, I use mine for business and pleasure. However I am a not a rude cell phone user. I do not talk loud in stores, and really try to keep it on silent. When I answer I usually whisper, or take myself outside the store to chat. I do not have a headset as those things drive me nuts. I also keep my cellphone on at the office, as some clients call me on it, however its on silent and at times I do miss the call.
I do enjoy txting, but I am not good at it, it takes me forever to write a few words, so I do don't it that much, however I love receiving txts..
I also agree, as rude cell phone usage is quite annoying. Many times clients are at my desk and their phones will ring, and they will take the call. Rude!!!!
Your story reminds me of my dad, he talks loud in stores on his cell, and does not care who is listening, I tend to forgive him a bit because of his age.. but I am sure others think its rude..
Great Blog...
