~ The Necklace ~

by Tina~in_ut

DeeDee sent me a link about a book that so reminded me of all of us in the Nest. The book is called The Necklace. It's about a woman named Jonell McLain who sees a beautiful diamond necklace in a store window, and, on a whim, decides to go in and try it on. It's a gorgeous 118 diamond, 15.24 carat, $37,000 necklace. It's something she can neither afford nor would ever consider buying for herself. Weeks later, in the mall once again, but with her mother this time, she decides to show her the necklace. This time the price is lower at $22,000 and she notices a sign announcing a sale where the store will take bids on any item of jewelry in the store. An idea is born. If she can find eleven women to pay $1000 each, they can collectively bid $12,000 for the necklace and share it.

On the day of the sale, after some negotiation, the women purchase the necklace for $15,000 and agree to include a thirteenth person, the store owners' wife. What follows is the true story of the The Necklace. Purchasing it was only the beginning. Sharing it, and the friendships that develop and the way it transforms the lives of these thirteen women is the real story.

The Nest is our necklace. We share. We disagree. We comfort. We encourage. We support one another. Unlike the necklace, we get to share the Nest each and every day, not just four weeks a year. I am so grateful to be a part of this wonderful group of women. You are all special in your own way and bring so much to the Nest. You make me laugh every day. You offer different points of view and make me think outside of the box. Some days, you make me cry.....but that's good too. I wouldn't trade the nest for the necklace even if you paid me!! (....but if you want to make me an offer, I'll at least consider it!)

I hope you read this book and enjoy it like I did.

  1. Hey Tina! First on your own blog--I thought that was "cheaqting" but ask Mo for sure. :)

Great blog--you know I'm always up for a good book!! And, what sweet words about the nest and its inhabitants. Thanks to you for keeping us entertained. :)

Thanks, owls, for being my necklace.

  2. Morning Glories!

Tina I was wondering who got first? Congrats! LOL

I saw Rachel Ray had a story about the Necklace yesterday but did not stop long enough to see what it was about. This sounds bad but I was surprised she read books.

I would not trade the owls for a necklace either and if we all pooled our money I would hope it would be for a centrally located meeting vacation party house! Now that I could chip in for.

    Great blog Tina!

  3. Oh sure I stop to type and Sandie takes 3rd away from me. Morning Sandie!

  5. You know I read the blog again and I have to ask myself "Where in the world would I wear a giant diamond necklace?" "The foodbank or to the grossry store?"

    ReplyDelete

  9. LynnD, LOL, I had the same thought when I read the blog! I'm not sure it would fit in at the grocery store, the booster club meetings or the book club meetings--or how it would look with jeans and flip-flops!

  10. Oops, where are my manners? Here you go, LynnD. **passing the Butter Pecan cawfee creamer**

Great story. I have not heard of this, or maybe I did and didn't pay attention (peri-menopausal you know). :)

I love how you feel about the nest, as do I. It is a shining gem in the crown of life. It has much more value than any jewel could ever have.

    Good morning Sandi,Lynn and Carol!

  17. Boy I wish I had a flip at work today! I have been watching one of the Therapists upstairs parking her car know for the better of 5 minutes.

Our office building is at the top of a cul-de-sac. If you park on the street, the curb is not straight, it obviously follows the cirle of the road. Well she has backed up and gone over the curb, forward, to close, to far, back and forth, back over the curb, etc. It has been very entertaining! She finally gave up and left! I am assuming she will make an attempt at the parking next. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  18. Carol if I had It would be yours...

    ReplyDelete
  19. ...it would be yours. Good grief I have to pay attention when I write. Multi-tasking.

Ok, I have to start my day..

    See ya later..

    All have a good day..

    BTW, Goldie,
I told my business partner you take Cymbalta for your diabetic neuropathy (shorten it) he is going to look into it.. thanks for sharing..

  25. Happy Thursday!!!

    Tina - Congrats on FIRST!!!

and GREAT BLOG - I saw this story on one of the morning shows or a magazine and thought - HOW COOL!!! and how sweet that you associate the Necklace with the Nest!!!

I agree - LOVE to come here every day and see what is going on in everyone's life!!!

I hope everyone has an excellent day!!
    :-)

  26. Oh my I leave for a little bit and bam there are 31 comments!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY EBJ!

Sandie thank you for the creamer! Delicious!

Carol love the flip blogs. Now I could chip in so we could start a pool to buy flips for everyone and then we could get a peek into the lives of all of our owls. That would be cool!

Ibb I could guarantee you would not get much of a tip if you were wearing a diamond necklace at my house! LMAO!

    From area 51:

Bebbi go for the car! Mr. Lynn D and I are going to break down and do the same thing and I hate that we will have car payments again.

I am glad your daughter quit taking the YAZ. I read comments on WebMD and many of the women were having similar problems. It was not rated to highly. Whatever happened to the regular old pill for birth control?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Tina - I don't find it tacky at all that you are FIRST!!!

Sandie - Good Morning... she's breaking out the flip-flops!! - we are having cool weather here!!!

Lynn D - LOL at where would we wear the necklace!! I guess I could have worn it to the golf tournament!! or a scrapbook crop!!

You would look lovely at the grocery store all dolled up!!!

Sandie - I would have to wear it with shorts and flip-flops - so at least you have "dressed" it up with your jeans!!!
    :-)

cpgem - fine - wave a few high dollar bills in your face and you are GONE!!!
    :-(

cpgem - TRIPLE LOVE your "take my flip anywhere" vids!! keep them coming!!!

Goldie - well said..... shining gem in the crown of life!! You have a great way with words - you need to write MORE blogs!!!

Goldie - don't you LOVE watching others!! and Yes, we would have enjoyed watching that!!! I have enough people watching stories from last week - to last me a VERY long time!!!

    Goldie - congrats on 25!!!

cpgem - you are NOT in our face, cuz you refuse to actually SHOW your face!!!

IBB - LOL at delivering pizza in a diamond necklace!!! I see your point!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. EBJ - Happy Birthday to you - hope all your wishes and dreams come true!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Carol, I love your videos! I would like to see everyone's videos! We should all submit a blog video--wouldn't that be fun?

But, Carol, you have to say "cawfee" at least once in every video, ok?

IBB, yea, warmer weather for you, too!

Happy Birthday, EBJ! Have a great day!

    Hi Goldie!

    Hi MEK!

    ReplyDelete
  30. HAPPY BIRTHDAY EBJ!!!!!!!!!!!

Why am I not getting those birthday updates from myspace anymore???

    Hi MEK and IBB.

Sheeeeeee's back! Another 5 minutes of trying to park the car on a curve! There is a car behind her and a fire hydrant in front, so has to back up and can't just pull in. Well she finally parked it and the right front wheel is fully on the curb. She came around and looked at it- KICKED IT- and then marched into the building. So funny!! I was cracking up,and was on the phone giving a play by play to the client on the other end.

    ReplyDelete
  31. MEK I was thinking I could turn the collar up on my polar fleece to highlight the neckace but I am afraid it would clash with my Romeo boots. (Sigh)

Goldie I am LMAO at your commentary on the parallel parker but have to say I feel sorry for her. I do not do parallel parking ever! If I have to I will park a mile away and walk or just decided I don't need to go park period and drive off!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Lynn- boy do I have a story for you!

Years ago Mr. Goldie had to be admitted to a hospital out of town while on vaca. His sister and her son and my 2 boys were there. She drove and we spent a LONG ASS DAY trying to entertain 3 boys and get Mr. Goldie settled, etc.

We were beyond tired and hungry when we stopped for dinner. She could not find a spot to park. Every spot was parallel and she wouldn't try it. We went around the block several times until I lost it. REALLY lost it. I screeched "STOP THE FUCKING CAR AND GET OUT!!"

She did, I jammed the thing in reverse, swooped into the spot, got out, handed her the keys and said "hope you paid attention". I stormed into the resturaunt, her following with the kids in tow. (I know- bad mother for cussing).

I sat down, I ordered a beer, had a good cry and we have laughed about it ever since.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Goldie you would not have to yell at me I would have gladly given you the keys! LMAO

    ReplyDelete

I love the "necklace" story, what a good idea!

Would love to wear diamonds with my work scrubs, or my sweats!! haha!

Carol, love when you do your filming. I enjoy your perspective of things, your commentary, such as "switching up" the Dunkin Donut locations, and love your accent too!

Goldie, your parallel parking story cracked me up!

Thanx for all the happy b-days, I really appreciate it.

I took today off, not doing a dammed thing! Well I am washing sheets right now.

We will celebrate on Saturday, my parents, MR. EBJ's mom and some friends will come over and we'll have a big pasta dinner.

I'll be buzzing around here today!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Pretty EUNICE - I see you are wearing the necklace today for your Paris debut.

TINA - I love your blog today. I love stories about transformation in peoples lives.

The Nest is like the necklace, as I feel we learn new ways to view life, new ideas to enhance our lives, & friends to share laughter and tears.

To those who haven't been on the nest lately, you are also in my thoughts.

It hit 60 degrees- Jodi take off your socks! I am quitting early and going home to take my Pepperoni for a walk!

  58. Goldie It is definitely not fun to watch as assets shrink. It wouldn't seem so bad if I was still in my 30s.

    ReplyDelete
  59. J/L, I hope you feel better!

Hey, I was just thinking--wouldn't it be fun if we really did pass a necklace (or something) around? We could add a little note as we send it to the next person, saying what we did when we wore it (this could be dangerous!)and we could post a picture of us wearing it on the blog! If you don't want your face, just take a chest shot! (Jodi, I think you would like this! You could wear your tassels!)

Wouldn't that be fun??? I have a necklace I wouldn't mind passing around, or maybe we could pass an owl and take it places with us and take pictures!!

I'm kind of excited about this, can you tell?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Heading out to a meeting. Be back later to hear how excited you guys are! lol :)

    Sandie,
I think that is a great idea, I love it..

It has to be organized tho, so if you are up to the task..

Have everyone that is interested, send you a msg (with their address), give it a week or so to compile the list, post the names here in order in which they will receive the necklace, I will then post the list on the main page of the blog. Once the reciever, recieves your necklace, they can post it here, and when they mail it out the next person, they can post that here as well..

Each person, can make a vid, or take a pic and then send to me, I will post the pic on the main page of the blog, if its a vid, I will post it with the daily blog..

I think a week turn around would be good for each person..

    How does all this sound???

    ReplyDelete
  67. TinaHo!
You are driving to Las Vegas? can I come?

    :O)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Carol~ yes we are driving to Vegas~ In answer to your second question, ask ur SSO~ :)~

  70. SLIN - I am sorry your throat is so sore. I kmow you said you don't need anything, but if you change your mind, please call.

SANDIE - Passing something around sounds like it would be fun. And...the tales it could tell.

TINA - I hope you feel better by tomorrow for your trip. I think you better take Eunice with you.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Uh....carol~ RE-READ the question you asked me! :)~

    ReplyDelete
  72. TINA...def NOT cheaqting! And not cheating, either!! Grats on 1st. Sorry you are sick (physically, cause we adore your sick sense of humor!!) SWAK!

Loved the blog. The necklace may have cost 15K but the Owls Nest and the nesters are PRICELESS!

GOLDIE...I was almost peeing in my pants at your color commentary! I was sent a video about women drivers and there was a scene with some lady trying to pull into a parking space! I was ROFLMFAO! Maybe I can find it and send it to Carol to post for a blog.

CAROL...that would be fun! We had a gnome at work and we sent it from store to store and each manager had to take it to some places of interest in their areas, take pics and send them to the main office. At our Manager's meeting, they had the pics on a video playing as we gathered the first day! It was hilarious what that gnome did! The day they handed it out the manager from Wisconsin and I took it to the bar that night! The gnome drank, smoked, puked over the toilet, hid in the plants and had a godd old time! Some things the gnome did had to stay private between us! Like me accompanying Jon and the gnome to the mens room...

    EBJ...HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Hope it was a magical day for you! {{HUGS}}

Hi Mo I always wear fine jewels when I shop at the dollar store.

Tina I am on a waiting list for Lamb through the library. I have been on it forever! Maybe I should just break down and buy it off of Amazon.

Justlin hang in there! My sore throat went away this morning. I just have the stuffy nose and raging headache now.

CAROL, I love your video blogs. It is fun to hear your voice and see some of your day. It makes us know you just a little bit more.

I guess I will wear the necklace laying around. My husband will think I robbed a jewlery store.

TINA, What a great story and blog. I would really like to read this book now. You have sparked my interest. I am sorry you are feeling bad and then have to drive to Vegas. I hope you get better and can sleep on the road. Is your whole group going on the trip and how long will you be gone? Think you will be able to sneak away to one of MARY'S slot machines?

Ok, I watched Ellen today and Melissa was on and now on don't like Jason. She said she was not blind-sided until he told about Molly. She had asked him and he only told her as they were going live. Too bad Jason, I was hanging in there for you but no fibbing! Tomorrow Molly and Jason will be on but I won't be changing my mind. He cheated and that is not nice even if it is TV!

Off to meet a couple of friends for dinner. I can't wait to watch Idol tonight and MEK, I agree with you...am not happy about one of the return wild cards...we shall see....

  80. LYNN AND JUST/LIN: I am so sorry you are feeling bad too. LYNN: Would there be any chance a Whopper would cheer you up? I could send one to you.

JUST/LIN; Kahula and milk will make that throat feel better too.

    Take care both of you....

  81. Yes, I want to do that necklace thingy.

However, will the necklace fit my not so petite neck?

  82. One more comment on the blog yesterday. I so agree with aLl of you regarding the meds and not being monitored very well. BUT, I always think when I watch those commercials about "if you erections lasts longer than 4 hours or whatever to call your doctor", too bad they didn't have that medicine out in my younger days..like when I was about 21!! Just thinkin'

  83. ITEACH: I was thinking the same thing about the necklace. We will have to use necklace extenders unless it is really long...I just didn't want to say it but now that you did...I will too.

  84. Hey hooters!

Thank you again for all the happy birthdays!

MR. EBJ is out getting some food from one of our fave Mexican restaurants.

Tomorrow he is taking me out for breakfast.

JL I hope you feel better soon! Be sure to gargle with warm salt water and take pain reliever! :)

Sandie, I LOVE the necklace idea. I will send you my address via Myspace, if I can stay on there long enough.

Lani, Paula seems to be doing great! The "magical antibiotic shot" seemed to do it's job, it's been over 2 weeks since she was sick.

She has been very clingy today, she wanted to be inside my zipped up sweatshirt. It was hard to get anything done. When I took her out to go to the bathroom or something, she wanted back in as soon as I sat down.

Tina have a safe drive to LV tomorrow.

Does Eunice have her wardrobe ready for the trip?

She does look kind of like a showgirl today, with her fancy hat, and boa. She needs to show a little more cleavage, like she does in her Prince costume.

  85. Dianne, love the bling bling owl!

My dad is cooking this weekend, he makes awesome spaghetti sauce/gravy.

MR. EBJ is addicted to it, and it was HIS request that my dad make it for MY birthday! haha!!

  86. Oh, I forgot to say that I wanna be in on the necklace thingy!

  87. EBJ: Happy Birthday!

Sandie: I want in, I will send you my address via myspace.

All, thanks for your encouragement. Thanks for letting spout all my worries about the car and all. I will get it tomorrow and I am really excited.

  88. Thanks, everyone, for the well wishes. My throat is killing me and there's some sinus congestion but at least it's not in my chest. I'm sure I'll live. :)

Dianne I have Bailey's Irish Cream. Think that'll do? I love that you remembered about the Whopper!!!

    ReplyDelete
  89. umm....but now that I am officially really "obligated"..I don't think I do the 15K necklace..haha.

  91. Tina: I loved your blog. I wish I read more but I just don't anymore. Between time on the computer, working and everything, I just don't find any time. I need to commit to it. I used to read so MUCH!

I had an interesting thing that happened to me today. Has anyone ever felt like they have been touched by an angel?

  94. Mo~ thanks....i didn't think it was cheating.....lol...sorta~

    Iteach~ it's a fun book....hope you enjoy it~

    Di~ i don't like to gamble....so I won't be looking for mary's slot~

EBJ~ Eunice is staying home to watch the cat and dog~ :(

    Bebbi~ it's an easy read...you'll enjoy it~

    ReplyDelete
  95. Tina, I'll go get that book and read it!

Yes, Lamb was our first book club book--has everyone read it? I'll ask the discussion questions once everyone reads it. LOL ;)

Carol, I'd be happy to be the coordinator. The necklace is high fashion jewelry (it's not costume but it's not worth a lot either! LOL) And, it's longer (hangs on your chest). It's silver and quite pretty, I think!

Should I do it first or last? I'm thinking Tina should be next (or first) since she wrote about the book. That's if you want to, Tina!

    Please advise. :)

  96. And, if not everyone wants to give me their address, they could just give it to the person who has it to pass on. Whatever is fine.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  112. Jodi: I am so sorry for your loss. :(

Lani: Do you mean by how I got touched by an Angel? It is so odd. I don't know if you read Rosie's blog, but I had serious spingles today..SERIOUS ones. I don't know how to explain it very well.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Okay, I am going to try. You all know I am buying a car. Well, today the oddest thing happened. First, the car is from someone who passed away. The owner (his son) called and said he had some good news. I called him back and he said his mom had found a warranty in his dad's stuff. He emailed me the information and I was looking it over and noticed that his Mom said, "Vic" a couple of times in the correspondence to her son. Well, I asked him if his father's name was Vic. He emailed back and said yes. His father's name was G. Victor and my dad's name is Victor G. ...ALSO, his name is B... and my dad has a son named B... Now, tell me, how many Victor G's do you know? Victor is not that common of a name!

The interesting thing is, when I first started talking to the person, he said his mother really insisted that the lift/scooter should go to someone who needs it. Well, you all know I couldn't go to see my dad because I didn't have a reliable vehicle. But, also, when he comes here, we can't do a lot because he can't walk for very long without his scooter.

It just really touched me. I think that person's father was reaching out to him and his mom, in some way.

The weirdest thing is, I never even thought about something like that until I read his Mom calling him Vic. It really touched me. It was so unexpected. The person passed away January 16, 2009. I really believe he was reaching out to his son and his wife.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Okay.....now you all think I am weird!..oh wait, you thought that before I told my story! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  115. BEBBI - Yes, that is what I meant. I believe you are exactly right about being touched by an angel. How perfect for you and your dad.

Years ago a friend's husband had a drinking problem. He went to rehab and when he came out I was thinking about whether there was anything I could do to help. I was siting in my living room one night and I looked over at my father's pipe rack and thought, I should give him one of his pipes, as my father also had a bit of a problem with drinking before he died. I kept thinking how hard it would be to give up one of his pipes and all of a sudden one of them fell off of the rack onto the floor. I said okay, my father must have knocked it off and I am meant to give my friend his pipe.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Wow, that is really a spiritual moment. Did the pipe help your friend?

I just woke up one day and realized I should take another look at that car. I had seen it about a week before and sent the link to my dad saying something like what did he think..not even thinking that I could buy it. It just came to me that I should take another look.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I wonder how many times we have had those "signs"..and overlooked them. It just makes me really wonder. I hope I haven't missed too many, they are very special when they happen.

    ReplyDelete
  118. BEBBI - I am sure you were guided. I thought of the pipe because he already smoked and I figured he could kind of have the pipe to suck on instead of a drink. I told him it belonged to my dad and told him what had happened with it falling. I told him I had asked my dad to be with him in his recovery and that was my dad's answer.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I think when our minds are not cluttered with so many thoughts we are open to feeling those nudges or those little voices.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Lani: I sure hope it was helpful to your friend. I bet it was.

I am thankful everyday that I am sensitive to things like that and can pick up on those feelings. In my opinion, not everyone can or they choose not to unless it is "in their face".

    ReplyDelete
  121. I think you are right. It sure is an incredible world. I always believed in magic when I was a kid. I was fascinated by that. I still think some day I will pick up a coin and it will be magic or find a genie in a bottle. I guess this is the genie in the bottle. A little magic to remind me and others of life's fragility.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I am glad everything turned out so well for you BEBBI.

    Everyone have a pleasant evening.

    ReplyDelete
  123. and, more importantly, remind us of those who have gone before us, but still are with us in some ways.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Night Lani, I have got to get to bed too..take care. It was nice talking to you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  125. Many events in my life have pointed to those who have passed still being with us.

I enjoyed talking with you also BEBBI.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Bebbi: Sadly, I've never had anything like that happen to me!

Tina: Loved the blog! Love the owls!

Happy Birthday, Judy! Your Dad and I should do "dueling spaghetti sauces" some day... I do up a sauce chock full of veggies... and if I do say so myself... I love it! LOL!

OK, over and out... except... if I do the necklace thing, should it be in total drag? :)

    ReplyDelete
  127. Tina I liked your blog. Your comparison of the Nest to the Necklace made me think that Carol must be the clasp that holds us all together. Have a nice Friday everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Wanda! When last we'd heard, you'd found a safe haven from the hurricane on an offshore oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico!

Good to see you're none the worse for wear! :)
