SISTERS

My sister and I
(circa 1966)

by Zona

My sister and I try to get together for lunch at least once a month. Sometimes she's too busy. Sometimes I am. Last weekend, we were finally able to go. We spent the whole time reminiscing about when we were kids. We shared a room until our brother left for college, and we couldn't stop laughing as we remembered the decor: double beds with matching purple crushed velvet bedspreads, striped purple sheets and purple curtains, purple lamps and plastic purple bedside tables. Are you feeling the late 60's love? There were more stuffed animals in that room than you could count, and we had fun trying to recall their names. Mom made most of our clothes back then, which was cool with me, until she made us the same tank tops. No way!! I put my 9 year old foot down. No twinsies!

My sis and I always got along pretty well, even though I was almost four years older. When I wasn't jumping on her bed and launching her out of the window, or coaxing her up onto the roof without a thought as to how to get her down, we spent a lot of time being silly and making each other laugh. There were times when she couldn't fall asleep, and I would make up stories to help her drift off. I was so surprised last week when she brought up the story of "Mannashukioka". It was a kingdom where all the houses were made out of huge mushrooms. The streets were paved with gold and the flowers were actually gumdrops and junior mints. I know how it sounds Bear, but I was only 9!! Mannashukioka also had it's own song, and 40 years after I had made it up, she sang it for me. I couldn't believe she remembered everything so clearly. She couldn't have been more than five years old! It was fun remembering those times, laughing 'til we cried. And guess what? She's still mad that I wouldn't let her wear that tank top!!

  14. Zona - excellent blog - thank you for sharing your childhood memories..

when my sister and I got our separate rooms - I had all the purple stuff and she picked pink. Heck - we had it in every shade that it came in.. carpet, walls, curtains, bedspread - you name it, it was either purple or pink!!

My sister and I have a GREAT relationship now that we are older. Too bad we live on opposite sides of the country....

  16. Zona - my mother also made most of our clothes when we were kids - the only "matchey - matchey" thing was at Easter - but she always changed something up so that it wasn't exactly the same...

we always got to pick out the material and patterns - she did great work.......

I'm off for the day - and will dig deep in the memory bank!!!

  18. Good morning!

Wow Tina got 1st today! What a surprise!! haha!!

What a sweet blog this morning Zona!

I had brothers but always wanted a sister. I always had my own room but would have loved to share girl talk, clothes, etc. with a sister. It didn't happen!

That is so cool that your sis remembered the song!

The necklace should be on it's way to me, will let you know when it arrives.

Goldie, I hope MR. GOLDIE is feeling better. I love that you bought him flowers...

Off to the vet for Paula today, as they say, one step forward, two steps back.

Hope everyone has a nice day today!

  19. Happy Monday Owls.

Zona, Thanks for sharing your childhood memories about you and your sis. I loved reading it and had to chuckle about all the purple. Turquoise was my favorite color, but I didn't get to have any turquoise in my room.

My sister is 13 years older than I am and I shared a room with her until I was 17. (Yes, she lived with my parents until she was well into her 30s.) I got married three weeks after I turned 18, so I only had my own room for about a year.

My sis and I were very close when I was young. My Mom worked and she had a lot of responsibility for me. She didn't mind though, because I was cute and I attracted a lot attention, which in turn brought attention to her. I used to cheer with the cheerleaders at the football games and apparently, everyone loved it.

When I got engaged, we started to have problems and I decided it was because the Mr. was taking me away from her. She thought I was too young to get married and it was the first time I didn't take her advice. We get along today, but we have never been as close as when I was a child.

  21. Tina, your new work hours are going to get you the prize for firsts. Congrats.

Bear, speaking of sisters, how is your sister doing?

Carol, I still don't have audio, but I did see your food videos and I was looking for the Italian cheesecake. It's that time of year.

Waving a wing to LynnD, IBB, Bebbi, MEK, EBJ, NN/LL, and all who fly in later.

My painter should finish up today, then I start putting the rest of the 'stuff' back. UGH!!!

  29. Zona - Your childhood sounds a lot like mine. I shared a room and a double bed with my sister. I guess today that would not be considered correct but I loved it. My sister was 3 1/2 years older than I was. I have written a lot about her.
She used to read all the L.M. Montgomery series to me. That's how I came to love Anne of Green Gables so much. We were always reminiscing about the past. I really miss that and her.

I am spring cleaning. I must get back to it before I lose my interest. See you all later.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Good morning to TINA LYNN BEBBI IBB CAROL NN/LL BEAR MEK BARB EBJ TINK & ALL WHO LAND LATER & ALL WHO HAVEN'T BEEN HERE IN A WHILE.

ZONA How nice to hear the story of a happy childhood. My sister and I shared a room until I moved out as an adult. Now she lives in Norway and I miss her.

I have been planting flowers and spring cleaning. The baby is due anytime now. I guess I am the grandmother's version of nesting.

Have a great day everyone. xoxoxo

  31. Tina Congrats on being first in the nest. Is that your Easter bonnet? Very chic!

Zona Love your blog today. It must be really special to have a sister. I have a brother who is 5 yrs younger and we are great friends. As a kid, I used to have a girlfriend who had a sister 1 or 2 years younger and they didn't get along at all. They shared a bedroom and actually had a chalk like drawn down the middle of the room and neither was allowed to cross that line into the other's territory.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That was supposed to be "chalk line" not chalk like! LOL

Hi Slan! I guess we were typing at the same time.

It seems we just had an earthquake in the Bay Area of a 4.6. I didn't feel a thing.

  46. It is just after 3 pm here. It is a beautiful day in Mich!

Zona, your writing left me wanting more. I think you should video yourself singing that song!

There were 7 of us,2 boys and 5 girls. We sort of came in 3s. My 2 oldest Sisters and a Brother, myself,a Sister and Brother. My baby sister Lena came12 yrs later.
I shared a room with my sister. It was fun until we grew into teenagers, then our personalities clashed lol! I think we drew a line on the floor too.I was a neat freak and she was a tornado lol!
When the top 3 siblings left we all had our own rooms. I was in heaven! Up went my fav. movie star pics and had an organized room.
I haven't seen her in a few years, but keep in contact by internet and phone. She lives in the foot hills of Georgia a hates to travel.I don't have many memories of the older siblings being home. Kinda strange eh? I am not one of those people that remember a lot of their childhood, for that matter I can hardly remember my first marriage lol, so that can be a good thing too!:)
Thanks for sharing your memories Zona.
    End of novel....

Sing you the song? No..I don't think I should do that for at least another 13 days. I want you to be able to fully express yourself when you hear it. LOL!

Thanks again for the edit, I really appreciate it. :)

  49. O.K... I was the youngest for 14 years..(I was 14 and a half when little brother was born). The three of us were exactly 3 and half years apart..
so my brother is 7 years older and MEK 3 and a half years older.... soooo....
they always picked on lil ole me!!!!!
My nick name was who-who... just because i couldn't say s's properly.. and when i would ask my brother and sister why my name was who-who... they would say it was because they didn't know who-who I was ... I was found on the doorstep!!!

and they told me I couldn't tell mom....
sooo finally when the 2 older ones moved out ..(I was 14 by then).. I got the nerve to ask mom if I was found on the door step!!!!
Of course she told me NO...

  50. LYNND: Although I thought they were very pretty, I was always afraid of canopy beds. I saw a Vincent Price movie as a kid where the canopy lowered and crushed the people in the bed during the night.

See why I stopped watching scary movies? I also had to cover mirrors!! BEAR..Bloody Mary...EEEK! ;)

BEBBI: Congrats on 69! Not too many days left...lol..

CPGEM: I loved the mittens..so hip and happening! I can't even imagine what the print is on that jacket...yikes! ;)

LL/NN: Ok..which hooter were you waving..the right or the left? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  51. LynnD..I think MEk and I had the same bedroom suit as you..The canopy beds with the matching dresser and desk... they were white with gold trim...
I just gave my niece the desk a couple years ago...

    ReplyDelete
  52. MEK: See...I once knew snow!! Snow was my friend! LOL..

Did you and your sis decorate with those big stick on flowers too? And the furry paw prints? Only in the 60's... :)

That was the first and last time my mom 'matched' us..I need to dig out the picture she took when we tried the tops on..omg..the look on my face!

EBJ: I hope Paula gets a good report!

SACBARB: I know you were a doll when you were a child..cuz you still are!! My sis moved into the same apartment building as Mr. Z and I did after we got married. I always had a place of refuge if I needed it! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh and I got stuck with pink cause MEK had picked Purple and mom said I couldn't have the same color!!!

    TINA: LOL @ vibrating...shush..CPGEM might hear! ;)

    GOLDIE: I would love to hear some of your childhood memories. San Francisco isn't THAT far away...{{hugs}}

    ReplyDelete
  56. IBB: LOL @ who-who..my cousins lived with us for a couple years..and my brother and my oldest cousin teased me the entire time. I know exactly what you mean...

MARY: EEEEK..no video! LMAO!! When my brother left for college and my sister and I got our own rooms..we kinda drifted apart. I was in high school and she was still in grade school. I'm sure she was glad to be out of that room before I started singing "Don't Rain On My Parade" at the top of my lungs!! Oh..using a hairbrush for a microphone of course...lol..

One thing about getting older..we can now laugh at all these goofy times..and it has kept us close.

  62. Hi Everyone!
Yes, tis I, the "here, there, and sometimes nowhere" Owl that hopes you all still remember me!LOL

I have been reading and I guess I am one of those "lurkers" now, because I haven't commented in ages.

"This, that and the other thing" have kept me from you all.

I hope that today is bringing to all some sun and joy! It is beautiful here in Northern California, a bit windy, but gorgeous just the same.

Besides checking in and letting you all know that I, Laurie and Olive are still here, I wanted to say how much I enjoy each and every one of you, even if I don't comment all that often. Each of you represents a special person to me. In one way or another you all have touched my family, and I am so grateful for that.

Tomorrow, 3-31-09, is "National Awareness Day to Stop The Use of the R Word".

This is a cause so very close to my heart, as you all know the reasons why.

I remember my oldest daughter Aimee, getting into a fight with a student in middle school because that person called an adult, who was developmentally challenged and waiting at a bus stop, the "R" word. I was never so proud!!!

Anyway, if anyone would like to join the campaign to stop the use of this negative word, the website is www.r-word.org

    Also, if you just Google,
    Stop the R word,
    you get alot more information.

Actor John C. McGinley (from Scrubs) is very involved and you can see his interview with Bonnie Hunt on You Tube.

We are up to almost 21,000 pledges!
Your name and email will NEVER be disclosed, and all it is, is an acknowledgement that you agree that the everyday use of the "R" word, hurts a loving, and innocent segment of our society.

Thank you Carol and everyone so much for allowing me to get out this very important cause and information.

Now, about sisters. ( I enjoyed your Blog so much, Zona)

I do have a sister. She is 6 years older than I, and we were never close until just the past couple of years.

Her life and my life were polar opposites, and we just didn't seem to be able to get those ends to meet.

Finally, in 2006, I called her (for the umpteenth time, with no real response from her) and she actually talked to me!! About REAL things!! Her life with her partner, my life with Laurie, my grandchildren, etc. I was so very happy.

I don't know what changed her mind, (I was never judgemental about her, she just assumed I was, but would never bring it up) but now we are REAL SISTERS again. We email at least 2 times a week, call each other at times, and send pictures back and forth. Oh, she lives in Des Moines, or I would be having lunch with her once a month too!

I am so envious of all of you with Mothers,Fathers, Brothers, Sisters, Aunts, Uncles etc that you are close with, and can visit with.

It is just my Sister and I left. But I cherish the relationship that we were able to reconnect. I love her so much!

I am so glad that my daughters are all very close with their sisters. The older two had a love/hate (mostly hate) relationship as children, but like most, as they became adults, they are now each others Best Friend. And of course Miss Laurie is just the most special sister they have!!

Have a wonderful afternoon all, and I so hope you can just check that website, whether or not you choose to pledge. Thanks so much!

Peace, Love and Happiness to all,
    Donna Jean and Laurie Elizabeth

  63. Zona I loved your blog and the picture!

I just wanted everyone to know that the 2009 Owl Blog stats will be posted either late tomorrow or early Wednesday.

Carol I left you and Tina a comment after watching you dessert video. I also have a couple questions. How many people do you feed? And are there any leftovers when everyone is finished? That was a lot of food! ijs.

  64. Zona - I forgot to mention how great the picture was. I loved it.

Shirley - I am looking forward to the new stats.

  65. IBB - I can't believe you just told the WHOLE WORLD your nickname.

and - just for the record - I do NOT remember ever telling her that we found her on the doorstep..

AND - YES - i got the PURPLE!!

  66. ZONA...such a fun blog! I love the snow attire! I had a purple room, too when I was little.
I don't have any sisters, just one brother who is 8 years older. I was pretty much his own indentured servent! But I did it gladly to be able to hang out with the older kids! We get along fine now...he lives in Wisconsin!
Why don't you invite your sister to the nest?

    Waving @ who-who!! LOL!!

So nice to see SHIRLEY, DONNA JEAN, JUST LIN and SLANI back to posting!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hi Everyone....

ZONA: I would have known that was you in the picture even if you hadn't told us. You look just the same!! The picture is adorable!

I have a brother that is 3 years younger than I am and he lives here in Denver. We are not as close as I would like to be but I continue to try (he calls it annoy). I have always wished for a sister and even more so as I get older.

CAROL: I loved you food blogs yesterday. I was just watching them and I am starving. Your mom's "gravy" looks delish!

MEK: Thanks for looking for me yesterday. We were only snowed in for about a day and a half and then typical Colorado, the sun was shining and melting everything. We did have a couple of inches of snow this morning (THANKS TO TINA) but it has melted. It is cold and windy today though.

Did any of you watch Celebrity Apprentice last night? Boy, that was quite a show this week.

    ReplyDelete
  68. My two granddaughters and a pink and purple. They are kind of growing out of it now but it was always so easy to buy them things and to know what color.

SACBARB: At what age did you start decorating your house with Raider decor? I am surprised you didn't have your kitchen painted black and silver! :)

JODI: I have loved you singing voice messages. I let a message with Sam yesterday telling her to tell you that I was missing them. You really do sing very nice.

MO; Are you all well now?

    ReplyDelete
  69. DONNAJEAN: Good to see you posting again. I'm glad you have reconnected with your sister..family bonds are so important.

SHIRLEY!! Bring on the list! :)

MO: I did everything for my brother too..it just didn't work out. My sister is sooo shy...I don't know if she would be able to post on a blog.

DIANNE: This is one pic where my hairstyle is different! ;) You, TINA and I sure seemed like sisters when you were here, dontcha think? :D

    ReplyDelete
  70. Dianne: Wow, I watched celebrity apprentice. I felt bad for Dennis Rodman, I hope he gets help for his alcohol problem. I was really impressed with Joan Rivers. She is amazing! Also, I have a new respect for Jesse James. Is he still married to Sandra Bullock?

    ReplyDelete
  71. DIANNE: Now I am missing you guys again... :(

Off to make dinner..hope everyone has a nice evening!

    ReplyDelete
  72. BEBBI: I don't watch the show..but Joan Rivers said in an interview that Dennis Rodman was one of the people on the show she was closest to..

    bbl...

    ReplyDelete
  73. Zona: Yes, you could tell that they had a good relationship. It is a fun and interesting show to watch! They genuinely liked each other. On the show she said she didn't expect that they would like each other like they did. It was really quite deep for a Celebrity Apprentice show. I really felt like Jesse James would not just skim over the fact that Dennis had a drinking problem. That was really good, the way it was handled. I felt bad for the D.R. I think Joan Rivers said it, but not sure..that it was like an intervention.

    ReplyDelete
  74. 120..i couldn't stand it anymore

  75. BEBBI: Did you notie even at the end of the CA show it showed a phone number for AA to call? I said the same thing to my husband about Jesse james. I could never figure out why Sandra Bullock married him and now I know why. Yes, they are still married. I felt sorry for Dennis too in a different kind of way. It was like an intervention.

ZONA: Yes, I did feel like we were all sisters when we were there. I would love to have the two of you be my sisters! I would love to have all of you be my sisters (except Joey and Bear).

I went to Olive Garden for lunch today and there were some young mothers there with the kids. One mother had a child about 4 and he was a brat! He was screaming/playing, throwing breadsticks across the room and the mom just kept sitting there talking to her friend. Everyone in that room was giving her mean looks and I think wanting to take that child to the car and paddle his bottom. The server kept telling us how sorry she was and when the mother FINALLY left with her kid the other mother went to each table saying how sorry she was about all the noise. She said she was going to babysit that kid later. I told her I would give him benedryl the moment he came in (jk-sorta). I told her next time they went to eat maybe they should go to McDonalds so this kid could get his energy out. We noticed the mothers were having wine but if that was my kid I would be having mimosas for breakfast!!! My friend and I could even hear each other talk. I just don't understand some of these parents. Ok...there is my rant for the day!!

  76. Dianne: LOL! Related story: I was out running on Steven's Creek trail yesterday afternoon. The trail is where I always run, but the time was highly unusual: typically, I'm up in the city on Sunday afternoons.

But yesterday was disrupted by having to work, so there I was, trotting along as usual, but with many more families sharing the trail with me, especially families on bikes, than after work on weekdays.

One family in particular, a father, mother, and a young brother and sister, totally caught my attention (and since they were biking slowely, I was able to eavesdrop on the family goings-on for quite a while.

Well, the kids were just being the biggest brats imaginable... both of them were clearly totally pissed off at their parents for some reason, and so just pestering them and questioning them and whining at them constantly!

Thinking about those poor parents was what made me chuckle. This is supposed to be totally bucolic family outing... all biking together down a beautiful trail on a bright, sunny, warm California afternoon... and instead the parents were having just about the worst time you could imagine!

  77. Shirley,
Loved your comment on the vid..LOL

Yesterday we were about 11 ppl, and yes there are leftovers, however my mom sends everyone home with food, cause we like to share, and it works good for them as they don't have to cook today, they are eating the leftovers.. I had some leftovers 2nite for dinner to.. And now I am going to have a St Joseph Pastry also know as a special Zeppole pastry made on St Joseph's feast day

Click here for more info on St Joseph

  78. DIANNE...thanks for asking. I still feel yucky.

Nothing can ruin a lovely day out then some bratty loud misbehaving kids. The mother isn't doing the kid any favor letting that behavior go on. End of my rant!!

  83. Sacbarb,
I enjoyed your novel, I think your sister was going to miss you, or perhaps was a tad bit jealous that you were getting married before her.

Why don't you have audio on your computer?

  85. IBB...

Oh my I loved your story.. "who who" I think its endearing. When someone as a nickname, that just means they are loved..

    And

    Mek...
Telling poor little "who who" she was left on the doorstep.. but you know you left out the best part, you should have told her she was left on the doorstep cause she was special, cause that would have been ture..

  86. Dianne..
I agree with Mo's rant, totally annoying.. I don't understand why parents, can't just parent..

    Baffles me..

  87. Carol, Yes, I think she was a little jealous that I was getting married before her. She even told me that Italian tradition dictates that the younger sister never marries before the older one. I would still be waiting if I waited for her. She is 78 and has never been married...or anything, I think! :0) I think she is the oldest living virgin...really!!!

There is somethiing wrong with mny speakers or the audio on my computer and I have no sound. I haven't had time to take it back to the guys that fixed it, but I hope to do that tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Sacbarb, that has got to be a record on being a virgin! Good thing you didn't wait lol!

Donna, I forwarded your email on the "R" to my contacts. It's a little word, but can cut deep!

Carol, I loved the info. on Italy's
"Fiesta di San Giuseppe." I love that they have kept the tradition.

  89. Sacbarb,
Well then, more power to her, I guess she would have no problem giving up porn for lent..
    and
Hope the audio gets fixed on your computer..

  90. Mary,
Yes, it is good that the tradition has been kept. Every March 19, we all have to have a St Joseph Pastry.. however these pastry are available all year, so I eat them often..

  93. IBB - Luv your nickname, although I think the one I have for my brother trumps that. Evidentally I couldn't pronounce Eric when I was a wee lass, so I called him BOOBY!!! I know...wtf!!! Anyway it has stuck. I took great pride when after I was out of school and he was still in marching band to yell "GO BOOBY" at the top of my lungs before their show started!!!

The characters are all rabbits that have to move their warren because the area is being developed and there are bulldozers, plus warring with another warren, and other dangers and tragedies ensue. It's a classic and quite heartbreaking, really.
