Elia Kazan

by Scirish

I have been reading an autobiography of Elia Kazan…..brief history… he was the director of: On the Waterfront, East of Eden, Streetcar Named Desire, to name a few. The man behind these enduring movies was a conflicted soul both in his boyhood life and his professional and married life. He was a boy that his Father deemed worthless, as he had no desire or talent for the family rug business. He was gawky and unattractive in his youth. When he entered his teen years he had all the angst of a boy, but also had to come to terms with being a bit lopsided “down there” because of a case of teenage mumps. He did not come into his own in his career easily. He started on the Theater stage although he wasn’t sure he liked acting. He studied with the “Group Theater Company” which is where he picked up the nickname “Gadget” because of his talent with stage management. It is also when he joined the Communist Party. Now please remember, this was about 1934, the depression was rampant, and the Communist Party was embraced by many, as a solution to the terrible ills that were plaguing the country. About 18 months later, Elias Kazan formally resigned from the party. His resignation was due to a dawning recognition that “The Party” was not about “freedom” or “independent thinking”, He dared to step out of the boundaries and was chastised publicly in a meeting. During and after that meeting, none of his “party” friends would meet his gaze. He felt that he made the right decision to resign.

Fast forward to the 1950’s… From Wikipedia

Kazan remained controversial until his death for testimony he gave before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1952, in which (after previously refusing to do so) he provided the names of associates from his days as a member of the Communist Party of the United States of America in the 1930s.

In his autobiography you can just hear the conflict he still has about this. He originally was not going to name anyone. He was expecting the summons, even talked it over with his studio head and backers (by this time he was a golden boy, with not only movies that were extraordinarily successful, but successful plays on Broadway as well) He says in his book that if he didn’t name names he would never be able to work again, and if he couldn’t work he would have died. He also says that he talked to his closest friends and they already knew they were being investigated, so they were not going to be upset about him naming them.

All that changed when he did actually name names….He became a pariah… people that had curried favor before actually crossed the street to avoid him. Playwrights pulled their plays…Movie backers disappeared. The amount of hate directed at him AND his wife and children was astronomical. In fact in 1999, he was given a lifetime achievement award and people that were not even born when this all happened booed him.

I am not sure if he did what he did out of really feeling that the Communist Party and their teachings were inappropriate and bad for the country or if he just did it to survive, but he certainly did pay for his brief foray into unacceptable politics.

What do you think? Was he really convinced that the Communist Party should be thwarted, or was he saving his butt? Should he have named names or kept quiet and hoped that he could still work? Did he deserve the award?

  2. Morning Glories!

Scrishy I knew some of the history of Mr. Kazan. That time in our history as a country was shameful and divisive. It in my opinion was no more than a witch hunt even the name House UnAmerican Committee tells us that they were even then going with the theme that some people were more American than others. Sound familiar?

There were many people in the country and Hollywood that were at that time registered Communists. It was an active political party at one time. They were definately a minority. Many people were young and just finding their political voice. Lucille Ball was once registered as a communist also.

Personally I would not have named names but he had to do what he felt was best. But did he gain anything? No, he was then an outcast in the very place that he felt his passion for work and life. To many lives were destroyed during this time. Even if it was not true you were drug in and questioned, if there was even a whisper of a rumor about you. This is just wrong!

I am seeing this technique used again today to try and divide our country. Only the words being thrown around are Socialism, Marxism, Facism. We have people even in our congress trying to milk this political scare tactic to gain votes from the fringe elements in our society and it is disgusting and dangerous.

We are a country of freedoms. That also means for religion and political ideas. We are made up of many different parties and come from different walks of life and moved here from all the different countries carrying with us different ideals. It is what makes us strong and sometimes weak. To me there is in the long run only Americans no one is more American than any other because they believe differently. The madness has to stop before we end up with another witch hunt that this time may go to far and cause damage to us all.

    That is my two cents.

  4. Good morning LynnD!
I am making a quick fly-by. I am having an MRI in a couple hours. I may have a pinched nerve in my back. After having a pain free vaca. I am thinking I have a lot of arthritis in many of my joints.

I don't know a lot about today's subject so don't feel I can make a comment. I have read a little about the House Un-American Comm.
Times have "changed" and I don't feel we should compare those times with today's opinions.Sure there is fear out there, that is normal in these hard times There are radicals in every era. We should try to keep things in prospective imho. :)

  8. Happy Belated Birthday Lynndeeeee! I hadn't thought of the parallels in society today...That was very well said! What really amazed me was the "damned if you do and damned if you don't" aspect of the situation and how long the condemnation affected him. I believe as you stated that he was young and trying to find his political voice. At times what he was describing as the beliefs of the Communist Party reminded me of the actions and beliefs of the "hippies" of the late 60's. So much so, that I could totally see why young people especially were taken in by it.

  11. I am having a blissful day at home!

MEK don't tell me you have the creeping crud. Get lots of rest and fluids. This is a tricky bug and it sneaks up on you just when you think you are feeling better.

Mary I hope it is not a pinched nerve. That sucks! I was down somewhat on Tuesday with the Sciatic acting up!

IBB I cracked up at your ransom sign! Give the necklace back and no one will be hurt! LMAO

Scrishy I was just musing on the theme, we seem to never learn from our mistakes and we need to take a look at history to understand the present. I cannot stop my brain sometimes. Next week I will have a hard time remembering my kids names however.

Good Morning to all that fly in!

  18. Good Morning Hooters and congrats on 1st Lynn!!

Very thought provoking issue scrishy. I don't think I would name names. But one never knows.
This reminds me of something that bothered me for years. I finally asked my Mother about it.

When you see pictures of Hitler leading Germany you see the throngs hailing him. I asked my mother how this could be, and she told me that you have to remember this. Before he became such and evil man, he did a lot of good for Germany. So people wanted to believe. Secondly, she said- what you don't see in those pictures is the armed men who stood behind you to make sure you waved and saluted and carried on.

That shook me to the core. Fear will cause you to do things that you never would have otherwise.

She lived it, so I will defer to her on issues of what you will do when faced with the reality of the time. For Elia Kazan, his fear was reflected in his decision to name names.

Hope you feel better soon MEK!!

Hey- I made quote of the day!!!

Hope everyone has a great day and weekend.

  20. LynnD, congrats on first and I hope you had a wonderful day yesterday! As everyone said, you are the perfect person to head up the food bank!

I didn't get to stop in last night and I see today that Lani is a grandma! Congrats, Lani and welcome little Georgina!

    MEK, feel better!

Mary, pinched nerve--yuck. I hope you get some relief fast. Mary, I'll send you the info with who you send the necklace to, okay?

    Shirley, fabulous marching yesterday!

IBB, what's this??? My necklace is being held for ransom??? Chocolate ransom??? Well, I never! :) I'm so glad you've enjoyed it. I sent you Mary's address via myspace--let me know if you didn't get it.

Scirish, I am running out the door and can't really absorb your blog right now but I'll read it again later. Thanks for the blog--looks like you put a lot of thought into it.

I'm leaving for Atlanta to watch Tyler (who will be 18 tomorrow!!) play his last away lacrosse game as a high school student. **wipes away tear** I'll be back tomorrow so ya'll have fun, ya hear?

    ReplyDelete
  21. LynnD Congrats on #1. Also, congrats on that new position at the food bank. I know you will be absolutely terrific!

Scirish What a thought-provoking blog today. Several years ago I saw the play Trumbo starring Brian Dennehy. Trumbo was a screenwriter who refused to name names. After he was blacklisted, others such as Kazan felt scared enough to give names. Besides being blacklisted, Trumbo spent 11 months in jail. He eventually was able to work again under a pseudonym of Robert Rich. He won an Oscar under that fake name. He did not judge others harshly that did give names because he felt they were just victims, too.

  22. Goldie...I remember reading about several prominent Americans and Britons that could not believe Hitler was evil because he had done so much good initially...Scary isn't it?

    Mary...Good luck with the MRI!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Mary I hope the MRI goes well.

IBB LOL @ holding the necklace hostage! I'm sorry to hear about your fridge. I'm probably going to have to break down and get a new TV pretty soon.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Just Lin....That was part of Kazan's fear...going to jail and the effect on his family...It seems based on what happened to Trumbo, that there was no "good" choice.

Speaking of family....I am leaving now for Conn. seems we are to have a Grandbaby by this evening....She is being induced because her water broke this morning at 6 and they do not want to go past 12 hours.

Thank you all for your comments on the blog...

Scirish, Very interesting blog, but like some others, I know very little about the subject and if I were put in that position, I can't say what I would do. Like you said, it was a no win situation...jail or blacklisted. Thanks for writing this thought provoking blog today.

I hope all goes well with the birth of your new grandbaby and a big congratulations.

  28. LynnD got first! Yay for you. I forgot to congratulate you on becoming director of the Food Bank. You are taking on an enormous task, but I know you will do a great job because you are so passionate about the cause.

  35. I too don't know much about Elia Kazan, I remember bits and pieces of it, I am not sure what I would have done in his shoes, but I guess it was easier for him to name names, than take all in himself..

This era, just reminds me of the hippie era (someone said it, forgot who sorry), Were is was all about going against the government and such...

I also think when one is growing up, for some reason they are drawn in to certain things, and become passionate about them, so much so that it can have terrible repercussions.

    Lynn: Gratz on the promotion.

  42. Carol LOL @ new TV smell! I tend to keep things well passed their best years.

IBB Congrats on the new fridge. Nothing wrong with being a little spoiled. As they say, you can't take it with you.

Back to the blog topic: That Committee was truly un-American. People were brought before that committee just because they attended one meeting out of curiosity or because someone they knew sent them a brochure. Those who refused to name names were very brave as they did not jeopardize anyone else's lives and careers. That is jmho, of course.

  43. Scirish~ cool blog~ I had heard of Elia Kazan and always thought...why in the world are they still mad?!! It seems that he was damned if did and damned if he didn't. He was just trying to protect his family. I really don't know what i would have done in his situation~ Congrats on the new grandbaby~ Hope everything goes well!

    LynnD~ congrats on first~

Mary~ I hope you pinch that nerve right back for pinching you first~ :D

Goldie~ that is so interesting. I've never noticed that in pictures or video that i have seen.

Hi to Tink, J/L, Kgrl, Jodi, Carol~

  44. Hi all! I had my MRI, but won't know the results for a few days. I had the attendant cover my face with a wash cloth so I wouldn't be tempted to open my eyes. The last time I did that I panicked. All went smooth. I made sure not to move or they would have to do it over.

Sandi, ok on the necklace info. I'll be waiting for it.(if someone pays the ransom) lol!

Scirish,a baby! how exciting! Be sure and let us know how everything goes.

    IBB,hooray on the new frig!

Goldie, you reminded me of something. This coming week the Antique Roadshow will be in Grand Rapids MI. A friend of mines Aunt took a big box of things her Grandparents had saved. There were many objects taken from Hitler's last home. They were astounded and said they were priceless, but could not put them on the show as it would look like they were glorifying him. I understand their view, but would have loved to have seen them. They have been sent to a dealer in California for pricing to sell.

  49. Afternoon all or Evening!

Goldie: it is very interesting reading about your Mom. I am glad you asked her about that time.

I am becoming the Director of the the food bank because two of our volunteers who do so much and have been involved from the begining are have health issues that are very daunting. There is also a much younger gal that has done alot too. She is also on the injured list. They asked me to take over to help coordinate and facilitate with other agencies as we have never had anyone to do that and to answer to the board. So I am the buffer if you will.

After much thinking I decided to do it for this year period. We are growing so much I can see that in the future we may have to go after some operation grants to have a full time paid Director. Right now is not a good time as grant money like every thing else is getting tighter and tighter.

I said Oy yesterday because I will have to walk a fine line so that this does not take over like a full time job. I appreciate everyones confidence in my ability but am really hoping I can live up to that.

Jodi lets see Birthday week. Today was cleaning the kitchen and watching Ritchie and then cleaning the livingroom and scrubbing a tub. Well I guess it is great if I were Cinderella! LOL

Oh I did get to catch up on some of my stories. I have to say I wish they would put Kendall back into a coma on All My Children. She bugs the hooey out of me.

Carol: I sent you a gmail today! Yes I sqooze in a blog while Ritchie was sleeping.
