In fourth grade, the boys and girls at school decide whether or not they want to be altar servers at church. That is the year they are allowed to start. In October of 2000, my family went to 12 o'clock mass like we did every week, and afterward, I noticed that many of my son's friends were there, but I hadn't seen them at mass. I asked my son why they were all there. He said that it was the first day of altar server class. I asked him why he wasn't going. He said that he didn't want to do it. I couldn't believe my ears. I had always planned for all three of my children to become altar servers. My brothers weren't altar boys and when I was young, girls couldn't be and I wanted to. I really couldn't believe what I was hearing. I started crying. I'm not sure why it was so important to me. Maybe I was one of those mother's that wanted to live vicariously through her kids......or maybe I was just PMS'ing~ Either way, the crying worked. He went to class with his friends.
I remember the first mass that he served at. My favorite priest, Fr. Tom, said the mass. My son and his classmate were supposed to be serving with an older boy who would show them what to do if they forgot. The older boy did not show. They were on their own. They did a good job and only made minor mistakes. At the end of the service, before he walked out, Fr. announced to the entire congregation that it was the boys' first time serving and they did it all on their own and congratulated them. Everyone clapped. Proud Mommy moment.
Three years later, my twins became altar servers. My oldest showed them the ropes. In fact, he taught quite a few of the younger kids what to do. He was very patient and kind and always seemed to know what needed to be done. I would watch him closely and notice a look here or a nod there where he would silently tell the others what to do next. I don't think he ever realized what a good example he was for the kids.
Once the kids graduate from 8th grade, they usually stop serving. Since the twins still were, my oldest did as well. By then, we were going to the 8am mass because that's when they needed servers the most. It was very hard sometimes to make it to the early mass, especially as the kids got older and all of our schedules got busier and busier. Even though we tried changing to the 5pm Saturday mass a couple of times, we always went back to where the kids were needed the most......8am on Sunday. There were a couple of years where the Mr and I were Eucharistic Ministers as well. All five of us were on the altar with the priest at the same time. Can you even picture that? (that's a rhetorical question!)
The twins are graduating from 8th grade next month. I finally told the person in charge that the kids will no longer be serving as of the April schedule. My oldest served for 8 years and the twins for 5 years. Easter Sunday was their last mass as altar servers. I cried of course.......and brought my camera. (that's what scrapbooking mother's do!) I watched my older son sitting next to the priest and deacon. He looked so peaceful and reverent. I smiled. I knew he was thinking about what we should have for breakfast and what xbox game he should play when he got home. I was right, too. He grinned when I asked him about it and said, "How did you know?" I laughed...."because I'm your mother!" I'm really going to miss this........

ReplyDeleteGood Morning!!

ReplyDeleteLYNN...you should still be sleeping! Congrats on 1st!

ReplyDeleteMorning Glories!
ReplyDeleteNo rest for the weary Mo!
Zona you have to be fast with this crowd they don't let up for a minute! LOL
Tina as I know nothing about being an altar server I will not comment on that portion. What I do know about is being a Mom and the hardest thing to do as a Mom or Dad is knowing when to press your kids into doing something and when not to. It is a fine line we all tight rope walk.
It sounds like this was a good time to press and make the kids participate and they are better human beings for it! Kudos to you and your family! All of the kids have now learned the fine art of people management and leadership because they did this and that is an excellent lesson to learn.
8!
ReplyDeleteTINA...hun, you're a good mom. You have every right to be so very proud of your kiddos. They have good role models (even if you hide in the bathroom from the in-laws!)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the lovely blog today
SCIRISH...good morning!
ReplyDeleteSCIRISH...good morning!
ReplyDeletelol Mo~
ReplyDeleteThanks LynnD~ and congrats on first~
ReplyDeleteGood morning Zona and Scirish~
G'Morning TINA!
ReplyDeleteI better get ready for work. I have the late shift, so I have to leave in 20 minutes...hair still not dried! Oopsies!
Morning Owls!
ReplyDeleteTina~What a cool family story!! I couldn't be an alter boy either...I think it scarred me for life...jk. I do remember sitting with my friends at Mass and waiting for one of the boys to make a mistake so we could all poke each other and titter.. (quietly, of course)
TINA: What a great blog! I can always picture everything you write...even the five of you standing right next to the priest! I had to grin thinking of you getting up for 8am mass though. I know you are going to miss watching your children as altar servers, but just think...when you're a grandma..you can cry your grandchildren into it too!! ;)
ReplyDeleteWonderful blog TINA..thank you!
TINA: My brother was an altar boy..I can't even imagine how that happened... ;)
ReplyDeleteG'morning SCIRISH! Thank you for the added words in Area 51 about my sister. I appreciate it.
TINA...you're a lot like my mom was. She too cried when I told her I didn't want to be an altar server...then I reminded her we are Jewish! All was ok after that ;)~
ReplyDeleteMO: You goof! Have a good day at work..swak!
ReplyDeleteTINA: btw...GREAT Title..ijs..
ReplyDeleteRONNNNNIEE!!! I see you stopped by during the wee hours of the morning. I'm sorry you were having trouble sleeping..I can relate..lol. I hope you were able to fall asleep and have the sweetest dreams!

ReplyDeleteCongrats on first Lynndeeeee!
Mornin' Zona....I hope your sister is hanging in there. (That doesn't sound right, but you know what I mean)
OMG!!!! I just went to check my mail and the little news portion had a story on Susan Boyles' MAKEOVER!!! She dyed her hair and was wearing a leather jacket and a Burberry scarf.
ReplyDeleteIs it Friday yet?
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Owls!!! Hi ya Lynnd, Zonawoman, Maureen, Scirish and Tina! Hope you and the whole gang have a fabulous day!
Tina....I love when you write about your kids. You do it with such respect and love and pride (even when you're hiding from them in the bathroom!) They are lucky kids to have such a loving and caring Mom!
Gotta run to the gym and then to a scary meeting! See ya later!
SCIRISH: I just saw it too!
ReplyDelete"weenie: LOL at "three owlKateers"!
ReplyDeleteTina: Fantastic blog! One aspect in particular caught my eye... the issue of whether girls should be allowed to be alter "boys". The strange reason: As you know, I love the sport of golf, and the Masters is by far my favorite major. Now what could that possibly have to do with the issue of the proper role for women in the Catholic church?
Well, part of what I love about Golf is the history of the Masters, which brings me right to the founder of the tournament, Robert Tyre Jones II, aka Bobby Jones. I love love love Bobby, really respect him, and would love to have met him.
This week, a movie about his life was on the Golf Channel, and while watching it, I idly started researching his descendants on the internet. Turns out, his grandson, Robert Tyre Jones IV, is a climical psychologist AND a minister of a church in Rome, Georgia.
Well, that's an interesting combination, I thought, but I was also confused. He belongs to the "Anglican Catholic" church, which I"d never heard of, even though I was brought up Anglican.
Well, doing a little more research, I found out that the "Anglican Catholic" church is a denomination of Anglicans that split from the larger church back in 1977 over the ordination of women issue (the "Anglican Catholics" don't allow it). In fact, today, this group is to the right of even the mainstream Catholic church when it comes to women, abortion, gays, you name it. You should read what Bobby Jones' grandson says about Barak Obama and gay marriage!
I wonder what Bobby Jones himself would think of all this?
AUNTIE NORT: Yep..I think it's Friday! Why is the meeting going to be scary?
ReplyDelete25 was for TINKA! :)
Ohhhh...Tinka, Happy belated 39th birthday!! Sorry I missed it, I hope it was a wonderful day.

ReplyDeleteTina That was a great blog today. A mother's tears have great power over her children. The experience has obviously been of great value to your children. You have every right to be very proud of them. So, are you going to continue going to 8 a.m. mass?
Dianne Sorry I wasn't around yesterday, but I got a kick out of your blog. Very funny! Not as funny as how I look in a thong, however. ;)

ReplyDeleteTina,I have no doubts you are a fantastic Mother. Their pictures show the pride they took in their duties.I love the pride that comes through in your posts of them.
ReplyDeleteScirish, did someone say Burberry? lol While I was in the Dominican Republic during my cruise I went to a duty free store and bought a 5 Burberry perfume sampler for $39. Love the stuff! The scarf must be expensive! I say good for her. She has waited a long time to feel like Cinderella.Lets just hope she keeps her sweetness intact.
MEK, I hope you are feeling better today.
Tinka, are you wearing your earrings?
Whabbear, just a storehouse of knowledge lol!
Hi!! LynnD,Zona,MO, VIG,IBB,Goldie,JustLynn, & Bebbi!!
Joey!! waving ~~~~
ReplyDeleteCan't remember if I wished Tink HB yesterday. If not, belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AUDREY!
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday Owls.
ReplyDeleteTina, When I was in school, girls didn't even think about being altar servers because they were called altar BOYS. Even when my oldest was in school, girls were not invited to serve Mass. My oldest didn't want to be an altar boy and I didn't think about using tears to persuade him.
I couldn't get my younger two boys in catholic school until high school, so they were never servers either. I can certainly understand your pride in your children serving Mass. I would have loved to see my boys serving Mass, too.
Thanks for your wonderful blog today. I love reading about your family.
I have been at the hospital all morning waiting for my son who was supposed to have knee surgery today. They ended up sending him home without the surgery because his blood pressure was too high. He was very disappointed because he has been waiting for almost two months to have this done. He has also been off work all that time. So now he has to wait until they call him with another surgery date. (sigh) :(
ReplyDeleteLynnD, first again today. congrats on being the early bird.
ReplyDeleteZona, just seconds away!
Scirish, I heard about Susan Boyle's makeover, too. If it makes her happy and feel better about herself, I say 'go for it'
Waving a wing at Mo Ronnie, VIG, IBB, Goldie, Bebbi, J/L, MEK, hope you're all better, Joey, Mary, and all who fly in later.
What a beautiful family story, Tina. Not only are you blessed to have such great children, they are as well to have such good parents.
ReplyDeleteJust remember, they weren't born that way, you took them by the hand and taught them. Happy early Mothers Day, my friend.
I bet your hoping that your Mothers Day gift will be a gift certificate for hair extensions.
ijs...
Congrats to you LynnD on #1.
Just stopping in to say 'Hello' and wishing everyone a super Friday.

RONNIE GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHEY!!!!!!!!!
we have missed you... so glad to see you....
We had a great time on the photo safari...
it was a picture perfect day...(pun intended)...
I will download some onto myspace...
I have to go to rehearsal tonight for the WOMANLESS BEAUTY PAGENT tomorrow... one of the guys that is representing our team has to work tonight and I told him I would go for him...
that in itself should be funny...
Scirish... I would have rescued you and let you come with us instead of wedding plans...
Tina:
ReplyDeleteHow do they keep their mouths shut for that long of a service?
Nah really those kids are great~
Scrishy: You have myspace mail.
Hope everyone is ready for a great weekend....
TINA: What a nice blog about your children. I remember my brother being an alter boy (what we called them in those days) and that was the time when the bells were rung during mass. You should be very proud of your children..as you are...I can feel your mother pride in your blog. You have such a nice family and this is a great picture. Now, I am trying to picture you up on that alter and I am having some fuzzy visions at this point when I include you. Hmmm, I don't know why...maybe I need to put in some eye drops and re-vision again.
ReplyDeleteMARY: I love the pictures of your husband with the necklace. I think it looks so attractive on him. Maybe you can see if SANDIE will sell it to you for a nice Fathers Day present.
I stayed up very late and slept very late and now I have to be somewhere in less than an hour and I haven't even showered so off I go.
Hope you all have a really good day and I don't know about any of you guys but boy was I glad to get that triple thong I had on yesterday off for the week. Another week of comfort before next Thursday....see ya' all later.
Good afternoon to everyone. I hope this finds everyone well and happy.
ReplyDeleteI got a bit teary eyed reading your blog TINA. I think giving our children a bit of a nudge sometimes is important. Sharing a dream with our children can be a blessing. Yours was a dream your children pursued and will carry with them for a lifetime. They honored their commitment with care and perseverance.
Good Afternoon Everyone. I feel like it is a new day because I just woke from a two hour nap.
ReplyDeleteTina - I loved your story. My son was always too shy to be an altar boy. I could have used your advice to 'encourage' him. Girls never served when my girls were young. You brought back so many memories for me.
Mary - No I am not wearing them. I have them safely in a box. I am so bad at losing earrings, they probably will live most of their life in that box. I did however wear them last evening at dinner. I loved them.
Thanks again for all the good wishes. I will try and send out thanks.
Zona-my-baby - I hope you are sleeping.
TINA - Great blog!! And I love the DeeDeefied pics of the kids!! Blessings to the twins this weekend as they are confirmed!!

Tina,
ReplyDeleteSometimes you do have to push a little, and I think it worked perfect in this case. It seems from the pic, they are proud to be alter servers. I think its great that all three were.
I admire all kids that choose to help the priest during mass. It is also so refreshing to see kids up on the alter..
Kudos to you and your children..
J/L...
ReplyDeleteMe too, whats for dinner????
Dianne...
ReplyDeleteWe still called them alter boys in my church. I think the words alter servers are used now because any gender can serve.
Mo..
ReplyDeleteYou crack me up..
Scirish..
ReplyDeleteI saw the makeover as well.. And so it begins..
Mary..
ReplyDeleteMy SSO bought me a burberry scarf one year for Christmas. I was surprised and did like it. I asked him how much it was, ready for this.. $349.00.. WHAT.. that sucker went right back, I kept the money and bought so much more than just one item..

ReplyDeleteJUST SLIN - Good for you....problem is, I think you gave them to me. :O~
ReplyDeleteHodi If I could mail the pounds away, I'd have lost weight a long time ago.
ReplyDeletecrap J/L~ you mean to tell me that if i just count my calories, i'll lose weight? Why hasn't anyone ever told me that?
ReplyDeleteJustlin, If I used chopsticks I would be a skinny minnie! I would starve to death before I learned to use them!
ReplyDeleteMary Actually, I bet you'd learn to use them pretty quickly.
ReplyDeleteTina The trick is to not just count the calories, but not go over a certain number in a day. Mindless eating is much more fun, I must say.
J/L~ so.....as long as I don't go over....oh....let's say...4000 a day, I'm okay?
