Just not fair...

I was handed some information yesterday, that I must admit pissed me off. I was told of a women who is a friend of a friend. She is a single mom with two teenage children. This woman, we will call her Jane, works a couple of hours a day in a dry cleaning store, she works off the books, so she can collect Social Security, Welfare, Food Stamps and whatever else the state shells out to her. Jane filed her income tax return back in January, her tax application was held because of some sort of glitch. When I was told this I thought it had to do with her address, because on her tax return application she used the address of where she works, and I thought for sure, she might be in trouble.

Well I guess the state is not as smart as I thought they were because the other day, she got a 6 thousand dollar check in the mail from the IRS, which was her tax return. So whatever the glitch was, it did not seem to matter, because the check is proof.

How does Jane get such a large tax return, but pay nothing into it? The money she lives on comes from the state which enables her to care for her family. Why would Jane be entitled to this large sum of money?

My business pays so many taxes, that I could never keep up, I have a payroll company and an accountant to take care of this for me, which in turn I pay them for there services. I get nothing back for my business, and I usually just get a small amount back for myself.

When my family sold some property that we had since the 70's the sale was mostly profit, so we had to pay the IRS 30 thousand dollars out of the sale of the property. My family's hard earned money, the money that is to be used for my parents retirement. And some of it went right to the IRS.

Does this make sense? I am so baffled by this whole ordeal, that it has me so angered.

Why is the middle class always the one that takes the hit from all ends?

Something is very wrong!

  2. Carol, I think she probably get's Earned Income Credit...even though she doesn't declare income, that's what it's called. Plus It's more for each child you have. If you make less than $30,000.00 a yr. you can apply for it.

  10. It has to warm up enough to leave the dog's outside. I hate to put them in there cage's all day.

I used to fence them in the kitchen, so they had room to stretch out, but Ruby figured out how to open the pocket door and get into the laundry room.

  12. Mornin' Everyone!!

CPGEM: I don't understand how the IRS works at all. Mr. Z earned a bonus this year, but more than 40% went to the gov't. We don't argue, we just pay. I think you're right though, the middle class sure does shoulder most of the burden..they're just too busy working to question it. I think that's just how the IRS wants it too.

    Great blog today CPGEM..thank you!

  14. Morning Glories!

Congrats on first Birdee! Tweet Tweet!

Carol the mysteries of the IRS. I can't even go there as Mr. Lynn D and I are paying through the nose. The rules and laws are so convoluted that it seems even experts can't figure them out. I just wish they would make a clear line for everyone to understand with no freaking loopholes.

I have no problem paying taxes. I just want a fair system. One can dream.

I am off and running again today. So will try to check in when I can.

Mo sending positive thoughts for you today! (((Hugs)))!

    Be back later.

    congrats on 1st "I'm a Hottie"

I can't go there either Lynn. We always end up paying thru the nose. Especially after our kids grew up. I don't even want to go pick up my taxes until the last day so I have less time to to experience chest pains before I right the check!

Hope everyone has a good day.

Congrats on first, Birdee! Giant jelly beans?? Like, how giant? LOL We would never make fun of you for being short--I'll bet you're just adorable--and a hottie!

Carol, taxes are one of the yucky things in life. I choose not to think about them and let Mr. Sandie take care of them. :)

Hi Bonacci, Tina, Zona, Goldie, LynnD and Tinka!

I just posted pics of the cute little puppy on myspace. She's such a good girl--still no word of any owners. Aubree is completely attached to her already but there's no way we can keep her. I think she's going to go live at college with my oldest son.

Too bad, Turtle, about the quarantine laws--you would love her.

  22. This time I am exactly 10 minutes getting back. Some days I promise and then the day flies by. I don't mean to tell fibs.

Good Morning Birdee - You are getting great at being first. It is a distant memory for me.

Good Morning Bonacci, Tina, Zona-My-Baby, Lynn, Carol and Goldie.

My 'fur-babies' need to go out.
    Back in one minute.

  23. Carol - The unfair method of paying taxes has always bugged me. If the really rich paid their share things would be different. I remember watching one of the day time shows that featured multi millionaires who paid no income tax at all. They thought it was great. I thought it was "the pits".
I don't know is we have a guaranteed income here in Canada but I know we have a lot who collect many cheques by putting in false addresses. They tried to change that by making people pick up their cheques but there was such a huge cry by the Human Rights Society they changed it back.

  24. I am running late but had to stop and post again as I have been thinking about carols blog since I got up.

Carol as I was showering I really woke up and I have to say I have more issues with people who make millions of dollars and corporations who try to hide money so they don't have to pay taxes.

This really burns me up more than someone who is making $30,000.00 dollars a year or less as they are trying to keep a roof over their heads and put food on the table. In this state that is quite a challenge especially if you are a family of 4.

Our bank was bought out by JP Morgan Chase in all of this economic mess. This deal was done before Obama took office. Our bank was Washington Mutual. They were in trouble with assets from their mortgage services but still had over $300 billion in other assets. JP Morgan bought them out for 1.7 billion. Hmmmm something wrong there. WA mutual is now sueing the Federal Government over this.

Anyway after Chase bought out our bank they promptly laid off 4,000 people. They also received huge amounts in bailout money. They announced two weeks ago that they are now going to lay off 25 percent more on the payroll as they are moving those jobs to India.

Now this chaps my ass raw! It is one example of how Corporations and the rich rip off middle class tax payers and play games. I have also read that several of these corportations have not been paying taxes at all!

The only thing I can do about this is write my Senators, which I have, and Mr. Lynn D and I are moving our bank accounts. We have decided to go with a local credit union.

Anyway I have more on this but won't bore you and realize I may not be totally coherent as I am running late.

    Gotta Go!

  30. Sandie - My daughter has a black lab and I would love to have them play together but my little ones don't behave well around her either. I think they resent how tall she is. My last two dogs before Tango and Tia were a black lab and a Golden Retriever. I adored them and felt so protected by them. My little ones are more like my babies although they can really bark loudly if someone is near my house.

  36. Birdee Congrats on #1!!! Hey, if you are riding on a motorcycle you do NOT want your feet touching the ground! Take my word for it. LOL

Carol Very thought provoking blog today. When I was a young widow with little children, I qualified for Earned Income Credit and really appreciated it. During 2008, I had to send in quarterly taxes. Now I got it all back in my tax return and I don't have to do that any more, thankfully. I totally agree, that the really rich do not pay their fair share.

  42. Hey hooters,

Hi Birdee! Congrats on 1st today!

Carol, this subject really gets me angry. There are soooo many people around here who "scam".

One recent story in the town next to mine made big news. A woman and her kids who qualified for Section 8 housing, got all the goverment money that she could, all the while driving a big Rolls Royce and dressed like she was a high fashion model.

She had foster kids so got money for them, was supposedly disabled so got money for that, on and on, you get the idea.

It seems that it is so easy to defraud the government, all these people get money and spend it on gambling, drugs, cell phones, etc.

When I went to the Social Security office to change my last name, there was a young man sitting behind me. He was waiting for his check and was telling the girl he was with how they were going to go cash the check, then go to the mall to buy a new cell phone and new video games.

Nice to know our tax money is buying this stuff for people who are "needy".

I do not mind at all helping people who really need assistance. I just get really angry when so much of my $$ is taken away to buy someone a new f*cking cell phone!

Anyway, Kgirl good luck with the new baby!

And Sandie, how fortunate that the little girl found you on the road. I hope your poodies will accept her into their family :)

Our Paula is declining, and tomorrow is her 17th birthday. We are not sure how much longer she will be with us. It is very sad, she is not eating good and not our same kitty cat princess.

MR. EBJ has in the past couple days talked about having her put to sleep, so the reality is there and may happen soon. It is heartbreaking.

    ReplyDelete
  52. EBJ, I'm so sorry about Paula. I know how you feel because our little Ippuni (our maltese) is failing, too, and I hope that K-Girl is right and we'll know when it's time. (((hugs)))

    Sandie hugs to you too~

    ReplyDelete
  54. Sandie Yes, (((HUGS))) to you, too. This is the difficult part about having pets.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Bonacci: Fireworks, you want? OK!

I tend to be more concerned about the mindset behind the Reagan revolution and what it did to tax revenues than about people who don't make a lot of money getting government assistance. Starting in the 19080's, it seemed that in a lot of developed countries (not just the US) the general attitude shifted to: I am entitled to all the conveniences and securities and support systems afforded by modern society, but damned if I want to pay for them. All governments do is waste money, so cut my taxes, please.

And what happened? Our schools are suffering, our police and fire and emergency medical and a host of other essential services are suffering, and governments are running huge deficits.

Mr Whabbear is looking at several days of unpaid leave this year as a measure for the city of Daly City to close the gap on its budget deficit. This is happening at all levels of government.

So, my point: You can't have your cake and eat it too. You can't just always agitate for lower taxes and at the same time support jail time for drug offenders and other criminal system justice policies that mean huge expansions in prison systems and the associated expenses. You can't agitate for lower and lower taxes and expect your children to be educated to the point where they're equipped for tomorrow's job markets. You can't continually agitate for lower taxes and expect fire fighting agencies to come to your rescue and save your house that you've built in a rural forested area when a fire comes through.

And so on and so on!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Take in this number....

    $ 611,706,458,000.00

that is the amount spent on the latest war effort as of 2 minutes ago.

Can you imagine how many people could have been fed, housed, educated, insured, etc.....

it makes me sick to my stomach.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Well, I didn't WANT the fireworks, but I figured they'd be coming...

    ReplyDelete
  58. sorry bonacci but I think there is a direct correlation between the two. just my opinion~

    ReplyDelete
  59. Happy Wednesday Owls.

It is raining here again today and I got caught in a DOWNPOUR coming out of Target. There were no dark clouds when I left the house and I didn't think I was in Target THAT long, but I got soaked.

Now that I am dried off, I'd like to say that I agree with those who are pissed because the rich don't seem to pay their share of taxes. They can offer the lawmakers so much more than the middle class and imo that's why so many loopholes are written into the laws. Working for the Governor's Office, I saw way more than I wanted to see and couldn't do anything about it.

I don't mind paying my share of taxes for the services available to me and I always vote in favor of education bonds even though my kids didn't attend public schools. Children who will grow up to be leaders of our country should be afforded the best education possible, again imo.

Like Lynn, I could go on, but...

    ReplyDelete
  60. So Birdee is the early birdee again. Are you short because you are a chicken owl or are you really vertically challenged? When I sat on Turtle's bike, my feet only touched the ground because it was tipped. Do you think I would feel tall standing next to you? ;)

Waving to Birdee, Bonacci, Tina, Zona, LynnD, Carol, Goldie, Tinka, J/L, Turtle, EBJ (HUGS), Jodi, Bear, and all who fly in later.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think the tax/aid problem might be in defining "rich". Is it a number? If so, what is it? What's a "fair share"? How is it defined? Is it based on how many dollars we pay? What percentage of income we pay? Or how much our salaries are? Do the poor (and again, what's "poor") have any responsibility to contribute a fair share? Is "fair share" the same for everyone?

Is the U.S. a democratic country, or should it be socialist or even communist?

I put a lot of effort into NOT having an opinion on this. I'm not attacking anyone, just posing some questions that screw the tax code up.

  65. Kgrl, my "fireworks" mail was in no way directed at the war effort. I assumed Whab would be weighing in on the tax/aid topic and thought it might be a humdinger (it wasn't, in my opinion).

I personally, don't believe in long conflicts. My friends around the world tell me the war was over oil. In the U.S. I'm told it was because the Hussein regime tried to kill his daddy and W. wanted revenge. I don't know if it's one, both or neither. I'm not smart enough to understand it all, but aware enough to realize that flaw in myself.

We're all friends here. Hugs and kisses to all.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Tina, thanks for the segue. Sorry I screwed it up. I love what you did w/Eunice.

    ReplyDelete
  67. no offense taken Bonacci.

I think alot of people do not realize that we only get 6-10% of our oil reserves from the war region. Most of our oil supply comes from South America. Whatever the initial reason for entering into war we just shouldn't be there. The persons responsible for 9/11 are still on the lamb and we entered into conflicts that in my opinion we shouldn't have put our nose into.

That said, I only meant that because of those decisions we have lost more than we have gained by being there.

We are all entitled to our opinions. I am adult enough as are many others here on the nest to be able to agree to disagree.

    ReplyDelete

  90. TINA: LOL...let's just see what Mr. Z says about that...!!

    CPGEM: I can't start new...I haven't mastered the old! ;)

SACBARB: As long as I get wet..I don't care when it rains.. ;)

  91. Sandie...

    Just saw your comment.. sorry..

You will def know when its time..

    Here is how I knew..

In my Shiki's last year, she stopped giving kisses, on the night that we put her down, I was standing in my living room (I was barefooted) watching her pace and trying to calm her down, when she approached me, she licked my foot, I knew then, it was time, we took her that night. She was 17yrs old.

    We still miss her..

    Trust me, you will know..

  92. Zona - Early to bed and early to rise will make Zona a good girl. Now do as your mother says.

Sandie and EBJ - I share in your worry. Tango turns 12 this year and is not in the best of health. I got Tia thinking I would have an heir and a spare but the heart doesn't work that way. I can't stand the thought of losing either one of them. Let's just keep hoping and enjoying them.

Our sunshine is gone until after Easter. I don't think Mother Nature was fair about that. Easter is so beautiful when the sun shines on the daffodils. At least the Easter Bunny comes with all the chocolate whether it rains, snows or the sun shines. I have been 35 days without chocolate and I am beginning to dream about it. Next year I am going to give up something different for Lent. Any suggestions?

  93. EBJ..

Sorry Paula is failing, I know how hard it is.. My thoughts are with ya.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Tinka...

I know how hard it is to give up something for lent.. I don't think anything would be easy, especially something we enjoy so much..

    ReplyDelete
  95. Shirley..

I am with you, I would get caught as well.. Glad we are both trustworthy..

    ReplyDelete
  96. Ok, I need to close up..

see ya when I get home..

    ReplyDelete
  97. I was out running errands and had to catch up on the comments.

TinaHo LMAO @ chocolate and scrapbooking supplies. Really, LMAO!!!!!!

Tinka Maybe next time you could give up pickles. :)

    ReplyDelete
  98. BARB - Not yet, but she has resorted to sitting on her spine(Jennifer that is)or lying down and going for walks in between.

So Barb, are you ripping doors off of your cupboards so you can call the hunk out to the house?

    ReplyDelete
  99. Just-Lin - Right. Pickles, that's a good thing to give up, especially the ones I don't like. Thanks for the idea.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Eunice was making me feel underdressed, so I had to go put my Easter bonnet back on.

    Speaking of underdressed, um, Birdee??????

    ReplyDelete
  101. Carol, why did I have it in my head that you were of Italian descent?

There are some things in this world that I am not meant to do, and art is one of them. It's a right brain activity, which I never used much. You know what they say... Use it or lose it.

I'll be the snack and beverage getter at the scrap-booking parties.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Ill take cashews and a DiSaronno and OJ after I have shuttles everyone to the show on the back of my bike....bwahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  103. Kgrl; Plain or salted? Will you have the DiSaronno on the rocks?

    Do I get the job?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Lani, Not ripping doors off yet. I have open shelves over the water cooler and I decided that the space would be better utilized for storage rather than decoration because the shelves are very deep, hence, the door. However, if some future mishap occurs, I will HAVE to call the hunky cabinet guy.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Crap. I screwed up the order. You want the OJ WITH the DiSaronno? Do people drink that?

What about rigging a trovois to your bike and doing a group transport?

My existence is boiling down to at best, stealing oxygen.

    ReplyDelete
  106. 1. Big table
    2. Tons of DP
    3. Lots of room for each person
    4. Tons of Chocolate
    5. Lots of nuts (the kind you eat!)
    6. Plenty of TV's
    7. and I guess Alcohol~

okay you two....that's your list...go get it all~ :D (we'll take care of the scrapbooking supplies!)

    ReplyDelete
  107. oh....and you two can't get drunk until the list is taken care of~ :)~

    ReplyDelete
  108. Tina, we're gonna need a cargo plane. We'll hang the trovois off the back and you can hold on. You'll have lots of room. The whole sky. We could probably fit the crafting supplies in the plane. K? :D

    ReplyDelete
  109. uh.....yeah....that....sounds great~ ?

    ReplyDelete
  110. You don't seem to like the idea, Tina... We could use a C-130 or an Anatov plane. The ones that are used to train astronauts. We'll do a parabolic flight and have fun with zero and multiple Gs. Bring your own barf bags and helmets.

    ReplyDelete
  111. although your plan is solid....it really is....fabulous even~ I'm just scratching my head trying to figure out how I'm gonna scrapbook and eat my chocolate. I don't mean to sound selfish or anything....but hey....it's all about the scrapbooking and chocolate. I mean...sacbarb even agreed! :)~

    ReplyDelete
  112. I have to get some sleep, ladies. Tina, I think you're wonderful and I would definitely let you ride inside the plane. If we really had one.

Psst, Kgrl; I don't drink, so you go ahead. Don't tell Tina!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Tina, if you were on a C-130 that was flying straight up, then straight down repeatedly, you definitely wouldn't want to be eating chocolate. Or anything else. You would definitely need booze when it was over.

    ReplyDelete
  114. hey goofball..i know that...that's what i meant....and I CAN'T drink~ bummer that~ goodnight~

    ReplyDelete
  115. Bonacci:

That would be DiSaronna mixed with OJ on the rocks. It tastes like a creamsicle.

And the cashews roasted and salted please.

I don't drink often, but I do enjoy a D&OJ every now and then.

Tina..... Ill pilot the plane FORWARD. ijs!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Who needs sleep? Tina, I didn't think it all the way through. As much as I would love to share the weightless experience with everyone, it isn't practical.

Scrapbooking and chocolate. In a nice van going to a nice hotel. I don't know what scrapbooking is. I know what a scrapbook is (sort of) but what kind of scraps do you use? If you run out of scraps, what do you do?

    ReplyDelete
  117. Kgrl, I'm an ignoramus about alcohol. If something tastes like a creamsicle, I'd probably just eat the creamsicle. I've tried grappa (vile stuff!), raki (no better) and something they drink in Brazil that starts with a "C" (it felt like something sucked the breath right out of me).

    ReplyDelete
  118. Bonacci~ If I run out, I use Zona's~

Kgrl!~ You drive....but try driving straight for once! lol~

    ReplyDelete
  119. I'm telling you....just open a nice DP over tons of ice~ all you need~

    ReplyDelete

  124. i have no idea....we'll see how long I last....i really hope it sticks this year~

    ReplyDelete
  125. I thought Carol gave up porn. Tina too? Was it good for you, Kgrl?

    ReplyDelete
  126. Hello, Owls! I have scrapbooking supplies I can contribute. I'll have to think about sharing the chocolate, though. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  127. D & OJ????? Bring it on! My favorite libation! I was just looking at the bottle of D I brought back from Italy and thinking of actually opening it!

CAROL...is this friend of a friend related to the Octomom? Living off school loans, settlements and hand outs.

The review went well, however they won't decide until the end of May if there will be any increases given or bonuses. I mentioned that there is a problem with our Home Care Aids regarding billing, frequencies and insurances. I offered up an idea for a solution, so I have been assigned the task of creating an initiative for the agency as my goal for 2009. That will be a great achievement if I can make it work. I am also to be designated the "go to person" in the absence of our boss. Whoopie!!
My problem area is I am an enabler...if someone isn't doing their job correctly, I accommodate them instead of forcing them to do their fair share!
Overall, I got the highest rating someone employed there at my length of service could possibly achieve. Now show me the damn money!!

Who got booted from Idol tonight?

    ReplyDelete
  128. ZONA...change your sleeping partner, just not your "swimming" partner!!!

    ReplyDelete
  129. MO Woo Hoo!!!! That's great news! If you're going to be the go-to person, I would think they'd bump up the pay. I sure hope so. You deserve it. Way to go!

  145. I just finished grading the last of the papers! Can't wait for spring break!!!!

oh....EBJ! I just thought of a song that I got the lyrics wrong at first:

Pussycat Dolls ~ When I Grow Up:
"When I grow up, I wanna be famous, I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies!
When I grow up, I wanna see the world, drive nice cars, I wanna have boobies!"

Apparently I was wrong....the last part is "I wanna have groupies!" Who knew~ :)~

    goodnight all~

    ReplyDelete
  146. LMBO!!! I just read the QOTD!!! Dang I'm funny~ (looking!) Shirley....i hope you wrote that down!!!! ijs~

When you all are getting that booze for the party, don't forget the daiquiris for ZONA.

EBJ: Sorry about Poe's health. Sending hugs to you.

TINK: My brother used to always say he gave up vegtables (I think he still does).

TINA: I went to see The Reader tonight. I really liked the story and you were right..not much clothing involved. Whatching all those hot scenes made me almost remember my younger days...ah...

    ReplyDelete
