Passover with my family.....

by Maureen

Some of you may know that on April 8th at sundown marks the beginning of Passover or Pesach. Last year I wrote a blog about the religious aspects of the holiday. I don't have a copy of it, but if anyone wants to read it, I volunteer our nest historian SHIRLEY to research the past blogs and let you know where it is :)

This year I decided to write a personal account of Passover in my "mishuganah" (crazy) family! You probably can tell from so many of my posts that I have a lot of cousins and we gather often. We absolutely love each other but even better is we like each other...a lot! Even the goofballs, loonies, whackos and "fermished" (confused) amongst us! And the "mishpucha" (honorary family) are every bit as special to be with.

This year, like last we will gather at Elaine's. There will be 3 tables set. The main dining table will seat the cousins that are more sedate. The table in the living room will seat the late comers and the cousins that are not as present. The cousins that have the two twin boys that are extremely ADHD and will down can after can of Coke...feeding their frenzy and getting louder with each story they relate to us. I for one will become exhausted after listening to them for even a few minutes! These are the same boys that at a Bar Mitzvah a few years ago drank numerous cups of coffee, slice after slice of cake and pie and then filled their cups with chocolate from the chocolate fountain...then spent the night barfing in the hotel room! And the next day their mom couldn't understand why they were sick! The third table, in between the others will be the "COOL" table! The table I generally sit at ;) This table will be the cousins that are sorta in the same age range. We will discuss Idol, DWTS and how crazy the boys at the other table are! We will repeat over and over how full we are as we are asking each other to pass another platter of something our way! Then a couple of us will prop ourselves up and head out to the patio to "observe the foliage"...code for having a cig!

Among the tables will be the pitter patter of little feet as the youngest of the cousins (5 - 10) will be running back and forth between the back bedroom with the video games and the basement with the pool table and ping pong table. Not a morsel of food will pass between their lips, but a number of sodas will! Just what they need...more sugar! Along the way, one at a time they will stop and ask one of us to play with them. The answer will be the same...in a few minutes! If we play our cards right we will be in the car on the way home before they realize not one of us hit a ping pong ball or racked up the pool balls even once!

Together we will sit and share stories of Passover pasts. Joanne, the matriarch of our family will enlighten us with family stories. Since she is the eldest we will have no idea if they are real or a figment of her very fertile imagination! But, we will listen with open ears and wide eyes. Then, when she leaves the room for something we will all say...no way did that ever happen!! Or did it???? We will spend a good deal of the time "plotzing" (laughing our asses off) until we cry!

Before anyone leaves they will be armed with a shopping bag full of Tupperware, Glad containers, baggies and foil wrapped plates of delicacies. A "nosh" (snack) for the next day...or two...or three!

Speaking of delicacies, there are certain foods that are traditional and some that are taboo. As we have gotten older the religious aspects seem to wane. When I was a kid we said the prayers and followed the traditions, rites and rituals. Now, the youngest generations are the children of Jewish / Catholic marriages and the traditions are not followed. One taboo is anything leavened or made with flour. A couple of years ago, one of the Catholic cousins was doing her Easter baking and brought, as her contribution - - pepperoni bread! We all chowed down on it...at the Seder table! That was after we had matzo ball soup with noodles! Oopsies! The traditional foods were there, just peppered with some things we all just like! One honorary cousin was asked by Elaine to bake and bring an Apple cake, since she makes it so darn good...to hell with the fact it is made of flour!

Finally, after a few hours, one by one we will leave with our doggie bags. Some of us will get on our cell phones and chat as we go to our homes and talk about how much fun we just had, how we can't believe that we "fressed" (ate) like a "faird" (horse), how crazy Joanne was... and how we can't wait until the next night as we do it all over again! Then once home we will plop down on our beds, tummies full and go "shluphin" (to sleep) and dream of giant matzo balls and the attack of the gefilte fish!

So that is a little insight into the holiday with my family! If you were here, you would all be invited...and you could sit at the "cool" table!

  3. Hi Birdee!!

Mo, I loved reading about your family--it sounds so fun!! I'm not a bit surprised that you are at the "cool" table. Hey, can you guys wait until September when I'm there to celebrate? :) Thanks for sharing that with us.

Lots to do today--still missing the puppy and wondering if her family is being good to her. I've gotta stop that.

Have a great Friday! I'm going out for Korean food tonight--YUMMM!

  6. Maureen it sounds like you have as much fun with your family as Carol does with her's. Any chance of a video? The only blog I found where you talk about religion was on Dec.22/08. But at the bottom of today's blog if people want to click on Maureen's name it will bring up all the blogs she has written. I may have missed it if there is another blog that talks about religion.

  7. Today I want to finish 7 tax returns I have here at home and get my laundry done. Tomorrow I have to go grocery shopping and make that pumpkin cheesecake that Joey gave us the recipe to a while back. I forgot to tell you Joey that it is delicious.

Sunday will be mum's day. We have the string of pearls for mum and we are going to wrap the box up with a clue inside. We are going to put the pearls in a plastic easter egg and hide it. She will have to follow a couple clue to find it. Then there will be about 12 of us that will go to church with her in the morning and then come back to the house for a turkey and ham meal. Should be a nice day.

  8. Birdee congrats on 1st! Honey you really need to put some clothes on. You may be a Hottie but you aren't going to attract any guys looking like that. And loosen up the attitude. Your body language says...come near me and I'll flatten you! You won't make any money that way, ijs. ((HUGS))

  9. Good morning Mo, Shirley, Sandie, Zona and Birdee. Happy Passover/Good Friday/yourcelebrationhere! It's heartwarming to see so many getting together with friends and family. Love the idea of multiple tables (who cleans up?) and hiding gifts in plastic eggs! Any celebration would be a hoot with an owl!

Best wishes and good day to all...

  10. Oh... Birdee; I look at your avatar and I just want to give it a hug and tell it everything's going to be okay. The poor thing looks nekkid!

  11. Shirley, that sounds like a great day for your family. I'm sure your mum will love it and she'll be so surprised to find those pearls!! Take pictures, okay??

  12. Morning Glories!

Birdee the little nekkid hottie got first!

Mo it sounds like your family has a great time when you gather. I can just picture it. The caffiene kids are a bit worrisome however. LOL The absolute best part of family gathering is taking home the package of leftovers!

Shirley I love how you are going to give your Mom the pearls. How fun!

    From area 51:

Goldie I hope the detective scares the beejsus out of the phone caller! I agree with everyone else please be careful. There seems to be some insanity floating in the air lately.

I slept in this morning and need to run downstairs and get some coffee will be back in a bit.

    Morning Zona, Sandie and Bonacci!

  13. Good Morning Hooters!
Congrats again on 1st birdee- and I agree with Shirley, perhaps a little modesty, maybe a frilly Easter dress?

Mo- I loved your blog, thanks for sharing. I am so jealous of your big family get togethers. I am jealous of big families period.

I am sure the only reason it is the 'cool' table is because you are sitting at it!!

Shirley, I think the necklace and your day for Mum sounds wonderful! I hope you have a great time and enjoy every minute.

Hope everyone has a great day. My brother coming to town today, so meeting him for lunch. Having Bro, his wife and boys and my Mom for Easter dinner,so have some cleaning to do!

  15. 'weenie: I LOVED your description! Especially the makeup of the different tables, and "plotzing"!

    I'm PMAO and ROFPMAO now!

Good morning, Birdie, Sandie, Bon, Lynn D, and Goldie!

Shirley, your Easter Sunday sounds great, and reminds me of Easters past. My Mom's a strong Anglican, so Easter weekend was a big deal while I was growing up.

Goldie: Sounds like you have, not just some cleanin' to do, but some cookin' too!

  16. Good Morning Owlettes...

It has taken me almost an hour to get here .. my computer is being really wonky today...

Birdee..... CONGRATS on 1st... I agree... you make me cold lookin' at ya... maybe we can talk Carol into getting you that nice Easter dress that Goldie mentioned.....

Mo...I would be nohored to sit at the cool table with you... I envy people with big familes... we have NO cousins... (directly)... we have some distant ones..)
but it is just our little family unit.. and we are spread all over the country.. so the only time we gather is for a wedding or funeral..

God morning to Birdee.. Sandie.. Zona..Shirley.. Bonacci.. LynnD..and GOLDIE!!!!!

Haven't been here in a couple of days... they have been really hard days... it is not easy saying goodbye to such a good friend.. THANK YOU ALL for your continued thoughts and prayers...

  22. Good Morning my beautiful Owls.

    Happy Passover Maureen.

Birdee - You are a hottie.

I am busy making my famous buns for Easter Dinner. I will be back as soon as I can.

  23. Look at me, up and on the blog early (for me) today!

((((((((Ibebold)))))))) I'm sorry you're having a tough week.

Mo, those big family gatherings are something I missed growing up with my dad in the Air Force. When I married my first husband, his family had huge gatherings -- loved them! I encourage my boys to continue to attend whenever possible.

Our Easter weekend looks like this: tonight & tomorrow I'm scrapbooking and celebrating the birthday of one of my dear bay area friends. Tonight we're having sushi - probably one of my last chances to have really good sushi after we leave here.

Tomorrow while I'm cropping, Paul will be driving up to Davis to pick up our youngest son (and recent college graduate!). The three of us will join two other families on Sunday for Easter brunch at a local restaurant.

When we lived in the Dallas area, our church there hosted a seder, which I found to be quite interesting. If I recall correctly, it was also potluck. Since we're talking about a christian church, I'm sure there were plenty of taboo foods on the table that night. It was fun doing the readings and talking about the history of the seder.

Paul has a phone interview this afternoon for a job he says he's marginally qualified for but you never know. He's been submitting to at least two job openings every night. Thank goodness there are a few openings in and around OKC. He has another phone interview on Monday with a company he feels is a perfect fit.

Okay, off to pay some bills! Good morning/afternoon everyone!

  24. Whab- Mr. Goldie is making the ham and the (his fabulous) scalloped cheesy potatoes, my Mom is bring the deviled eggs, my SIL is bringing 2 desserts. I am in charge of the veggies and salad. Not much cooking at all!!

IBB- ((Hugs)) glad you are back.

Tink- send some of those buns my way!!

Still no word from the wacko or the detective. I told him that I only work until noon today, and he doesn't start until 2:00 so I guess it will be Monday when he calls me.

  25. Whabby...Caryn... Goldie

  26. Yea, it's Tinka and her famous buns! LOL Tinka, I'm just going to have to have one of those buns one of these days!!

Caryn, so nice to see you! I know moving is a big deal--so much to coordinate! I wish you the very best and hope that Paul gets the job of his dreams.

Another beautiful Masters day in Augusta!

  27. Happy Good Friday!!

    Good Morning/Afternoon to all...

Birdee - congrats on first - you would be FREEZING in my house today - Mr. MEK turned the AC on last night and I just about froze to death...... it might be getting hot, but it's not THAT hot..

    right, Zona??!!!

Whabby, Goldie and Sandie, - I'm watching the Golf Channel (these guys are just rambling about nothing right now) and keeping up with the scores on the internet......

Caryn - good luck to YH...

  28. MO - excellent blog - thank you for sharing your family with us.

Yeah, we get to sit at the cool table - I agree with Goldie - it's the cool table cuz you are sitting at it.......

and - as IBB said - we don't have that massive extended family so holiday's are kinda quiet......

we'll be going to church on Sunday and then mom, Mr. MEK and I will have dinner - this year, instead of getting a ham (you can never find a small one and it goes bad before we can eat it all) - I just got those ham steak things, we'll have all the normal fixings and we'll watch the final round of the masters!!!

Gotta love it - when you come from such a sports oriented family!!
    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Waving to all and wishing you a great day.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Lani, both my son and I swear we have seen her on the road before and that's what worries me. Today I heard a dog whining and ran out into my front yard but didn't see anything. I think I'm just being hyper-sensitive. I have to stop worrying about her. :[

We also have coyotes in the woods and they've been killing small animals. But I'm not going to think about that either!

    ReplyDelete
  34. YEAH - Shirley - write that down..

  43. LynnD, Richie has gotten so big! What a cutie!

    J/L, I know. If I do see her again, she's mine. :)

MEK, our paper this morning had a big picture of Tiger throwing his golf club when he hit a bad shot. He makes it harder and harder to like him, IMO. The other day it showed him eating something and just throwing the wrapper behind him for someone else to pick up. Boo.

Headed out to dinner with hubby and friends to a Korean restaurant. Have a good night.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Shirley!~ It's Good Friday!!! I can't take that!!!! I've been waiting for someone to get that over with so I could go back to being my obnoxious self~ congrats mek~

    ReplyDelete
  45. k'girl - hugs to you...

sandie - don't know what to say about tiger - i can't imagine him throwing his trash - clubs, yes, trash - oh well......

but - I must say - after working tournaments that he is in - I really don't like dealing with the gallery that follow him - which ends up being EVERYONE that has a ticket....... it's massive and unsafe behind the scenes..... so - for that - I don't look forward to him playing my hole - if that makes sense...... I would not like to be him....... everybody wants a piece of him......

but - he oozes confident .......

I would love to see one of the "old guys" win this..... just because.......

    ReplyDelete
  46. Tina - glad i could help you out!!!

  52. I am back! Had to play with Ritchie for awhile.

My daughter said he was kind of confused at to what in the heck was holding him. He kept touching the fur on the rabbit and looking at it like what in the heck are you? LOL I think he was trying to make a connection between the bunny and our dogs. He did not scream but was not to sure about the whole situation.

    IBB sending you (((Hugs))).

Kgirl not sure what is going on but wish you the best!

MEK you are so going to get a reputation with talk like that!

  54. Good evening feathered friends!

Thank you so much for all of your comments on my blog today! I hope you all felt like you were there. If you were, you'd def be at the "cool" table!

In case you were wondering, the "words" that I threw in were Yiddish. It is based on German.

Dinner on Wednesday began with my cousin Sharon knocking over my diet coke all over the table followed by my cousin Ed spilling his wine all over the other side of the table...and so it began!

Last night was rather sedate...and SMALL. Only 8 of us. We all sat at the same table! There were only 4 kiddos there. Two stayed in the computer room, one left with one her other Aunts and the littlest one(5) fell asleep on the couch!

LYNN...are you feeling better? Hoping so. Goodness, Ritchie is getting so big. And even cuter!

LANI...your avatar is funny! In your dreams you'll be very last! Where is the baby now????

TINA...you are an honorary Jew in my book!! Maybe you can celebrate PassTer or EastOver!!

BIRDEEEEEE...hate to say it, but chicken is always a part of our dinners!!! Don't worry...I ate your serving of fish, and Jax's too.

SHIRLEY...your celebration sounds awesome, too! I don't have a vid camera, so no vids. Maybe next year!

K-GIRL...whatever it is, you know you have my best wishes for you that it is all good.

SANDIE...if you were in town on Sept. 18th you could join us at our Rosh Hashana gathering!

    Thanks again everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  55. LynnD Ritchie is so cute! I'm not too sure about the rabbit, though....

MEK You and your hole! ROFLMAO!!!!!

  56. Thanks everybody. Wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Mo: One day we will share a bowl of Matza Ball soup.
    ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  57. OMG- LYNN!! if I can find the pic I will scan it.

When Matthew was about 4 he wanted to see the bunny. In the worst way he begged and pleaded and begged again. We were in the big city (Madison- LOL) at the time. I stood in line and paid my 5 bucks for the pic. (remember this was 26 years ago) and we were broke as shit. I stood in line FOREVER. It is finally our turn- he then decides that he doesn't want to sit on the Bunny's lap.

Well, I gently whispered to him that I would rip his arm off and beat him with it if he didn't get on the damn bunny's lap and take a picture! ( I know- very bad Mommy)

So, he climbs aboard, holds the carrot in his arms and the look of disgust on his face is priceless!!!!!

I did not win Mother of the year. :)

MEK- THANK YOU!! I lioved it!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. K-GIRL...I would gladly share a table with you, but not my mb soup!! ijs!!!

    ReplyDelete
  117. Well that didn't work because now that comment is now last instead of the other comment being last. Lets try this again.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Ok now that comment is last and it was suppose to stop the other comment from being last and that comment was suppose to make the other one not last. Now the last one is last and if I post this one it will be last too. Well not really cause you can't have two comments as last only one. Either way I work this I am still going to be last. Sorry Tina. I tried.

  126. HEYYYYYY,

It's my blog. I believe the by-laws state that the writer of the blog in question is the party of the first and therefore is also the part of the last.

When I was in Blog State University Law School, we studied the writ of habeus blogger. The blogger that wrote the blog is rightfully the owner of the place of LAST.

Don't make me file a BRO...Blogger Restraining Order!

    LAST LAST LAST LAST LAST

    ReplyDelete
  127. Mo I think you are wrong about the bylaws, but feel free to file a BRO. Keep in mind though that if you do I will have to file a habeas, double jeopardy objection order which will keep you in paper work for weeks maybe even months! In the meantime...
