I keep getting stuck. Not in the metaphorical sense, but in the physical, “If-I-move-I-am-going-to-die” sense. It is a shooting pain through my back and down my leg. I have become stuck at the most inopportune times, the most recent being whilst putting dog food in the fridge, directly in the path of the Cold Blast. Great, I thought. I’m going to die of hypothermia, standing here in front of the open refrigerator. The coroner will list the cause of death as idiocy.
This is not supposed to happen to me. I am healthy and active. Injuries are a side effect of the lifestyle I have chosen and I happily accept the price of that lifestyle. I don’t know what I could have done to my back, though. I haven’t lifted anything heavier than Ernie the Chihuahua and Elmo the Poodle in the past week. I am in truth, not dying because dying isn’t supposed to hurt. Plus, when my ass and leg is not on fire, I find it mildly entertaining.
I have not told my husband about this. He just thinks I’ve absolutely lost my mind because of all the cover stories I’ve made up when I become stuck. He has caught me checking the carpet and pondering a refrigerator, empty of anything except the can of Alpo that was caught in my death grip. There have been a lot of complicated mathematical problems I’ve been solving in the midst of some routine movement that has paralyzed me. My eccentric personality is finally an asset, as he wonders if I am just trying to get a reaction out of him with my recent stop-animation movement.
The reality is that my body is simply a machine. Machines require maintenance and care. At some point, you either have to replace original parts or lose functionality. As an engineer I know that once you start swapping out parts, the integrity of any machine will be compromised. I am determined to preserve the integrity of this machine I call, ”Me”.
I am not a high-performance sports car. I am a demolition derby car that always seems to be running, maybe just barely, at the end of the day. I was built well and my design is sound. I have scars and dents that are badges of honor I wear proudly. I may not operate at peak efficiency all the time and I may back-fire, but I will always be there, giving all I’ve got. You can hammer out the dents that impede performance and weld me back together when I need it. Leave the foundation alone though, because that is what makes me, "Me". That's all I was ever meant to be.

ReplyDeleteWow I did it. Now I am going back to bed.
ReplyDeleteIt's a lovely morning here but my 'fur babies' got me up. My bed looks even more lovely.
ReplyDeleteBonacci - I will read your blog when I can see a little better.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Zona-My-Baby and VIG.
ReplyDeleteTo all owls everywhere, "Have a Nice Day".
ReplyDeleteI guess all owls are sleeping in.
ReplyDeleteMy doggies are back in the house.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am back to sleep for at least one more hour.
ReplyDelete10
ReplyDeleteI forgot to tell you. In the middle of the night I heard a noise outside the bedroom window. I looked and there was a beautiful buck with an impressive rack about three feet from the open window. He was enjoying my tall flowers. I talked to him and he didn't move until he was full. I felt like a "Deer Whisperer". I didn't dream this, honest I didn't.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thursday!!
ReplyDeleteGood morning...
Tinka - congrats on FIRST!!!
I am off to our wonderful dog park.
woke up with a massive headache..
will read when i return..
I hope everyone has an excellent day!!
:-)
Tinka - how sweet - the deer whisper!!!
ReplyDeleteFORETEEN
ReplyDeleteMek - Good Morning. Have fun at the dog park. I wish I could join you one day.
ReplyDeleteBonacci- Great blog. Very inventive. If I am a machine I guess I am an old one that still works.
ReplyDeleteIf I were a machine I guess I would be labelled an antique.
ReplyDeleteMek - Have you left?
ReplyDelete20
ReplyDeleteLet's fight for 25.
ReplyDelete22
ReplyDelete23
ReplyDelete24
ReplyDelete25
ReplyDeleteMek - I guess you will be walking while I am sleeping. That what keeps this old machine in running order. Have a great day everyone. Love, Tinka
ReplyDeleteMorning Glories!
ReplyDeleteTinka got first! Wahooo! I can just see you talking to that Buck. You do know he will be back to eat the rest of your flower garden don't you? LOL Tinka Buck Buffet.
Have fun at the dog park MEK!
Bonacci great blog. I believe it is your sciatic nerve kicking up. I have the same problem. The good news is that there are exercises you can do that will strengthen you back and core muscles to aleviate the pain.
I have problems and some times it only takes turning in a chair wrong or twisting to get out of the car to set it off. Sucks and the pain is ridiculous.
Me I am for modern remedies if they make sense. We will fix the car why not our bodies?? That said I would consider it only if the outcome is predicted to garner great results.
Hope everyone has a great and sunny day!
Iteach sending up big positive vibes for Mr. Iteach!!!!
Mary happy to hear your insurance will hold until Aug 1st! Have the works done!
Ok off to get my morning coffee!
That was a great piece of writing Bonacci!!
ReplyDeleteJust wait honey! I was reminded of the things I do to get thru moments of torture myself. But I have never seen it put into words....and so well I might add!
My problem isn't pain....its more of a gastro thing...if you know what I mean! And it never fails....I am always in a store or somewhere public. In the very back of Target for example. I just freeze and squeeze until it passes.....and if people are around I grab the first thing I can get my hand on to examine and read....to look less suspicious you know.....and when I am ok....I can usually make it to the next department.....freeze and squeeze....and check out another product....like that can that will blow up a tire....who knew?? And eventually I can scamper to the next department....repeat....and keep it up until I make it to the door and to my car...then at that point I don't care...but it never fails...at that point....the urge has left and usually doesn't return....unless I have to go somewhere else......and it kindly waits til I get there.
But...I have learned things I would have never known....for example.....I overheard a friends husband talking about wanting to locate and buy a.....
Makita 7.2V Lithium-Ion Cordless Driver-Drill Kit with Auto-Stop Clutch
I automatically blurted out....WALMART...HARDWARE...AISLE 7....wth??
Good Morning, Tink, MEK and Lynn! Carol, thanks for humoring this old fart and publishing the blog. You are a master at titling. Thanks for that!
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone has a perfect day!!
Tink, are sure that what you saw out yoour bedroom window was a buck, or just Goldie modeling the traveling necklace? By the way, where is it now, and at what point is it in its journey/ 1/2, 3/4/?
ReplyDeleteSorry about your headache, MEK. That sounds like a good reason to take it easy. I'm really good at rubbing those pains away, so if you need a virtual neck, forehead massage, let me know.
ReplyDeleteIn truth, I know how I hurt my back. I was run over by 15 Target shopping carts, being pushed by a Target employee. They have graciously offered to settle the natter with a $100 gift card. That would be nice if I hadn't already spent over $5,000 trying to deal with this.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Target is a fine store. Just a very dangerous (and irresponsible) one.
they don't call it "TARGET" for nothing.....
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Hooters!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 1st Tink, and no it was not me and the necklace outside your window. :)
Hey bonacci- great blog. I have to admit that my thought was exactly the same as Lynns. I had the problem when pregnant- now that was something.
My outside is better than my insides. Bad appendix- out
Pancreas- not functioning
arteries- stented
periphianl nerves- shot
But other than that- I am good to go!!! LOL
Hope everyone has a great day. MEK- sorry about your headache (you have mail).
I am up and ready to go. I just don't know where. I guess I will start with breakfast for my 'fur-babies'.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Dee Dee - I will print out your comment and keep it in my purse for when I need the instructions.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Lynn - I had the sciatic nerve act up on me for the first time last winter. The pain was so bad I thought I was going to die.
ReplyDeleteThis buck has been eating my neighbour's roses all summer. Deer love roses the best. I guess he saved mine for the time when he had nothing better. I can't think of their names. They are tall with bunches of bell shaped flowers on top. They last only a couple of weeks in July. Now I am going to spend all morning trying to remember the name. Help anyone?
Good Morning Bonacci - No I am sure it wasn't Goldie wearing a necklace. If I had reached out I could have petted him (if he'd let me). I don't think Goldie has short brown hair all over her body. Does she???
ReplyDeleteGoldie - Good Morning. Sorry I didn't see you this morning. You had already verified the fact that it wasn't you eating my Yucca plant. Oh I just remembered its name. Funny how names will come to you when you aren't trying to remember. The brain works in mysterious ways doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteMek - Sorry I didn't read about your headache. Hope it gets better soon.
ReplyDeleteIteach - I am sending positive energy your way as well. This is going to be a good day.
ReplyDeleteOkay Mek it's time to race. Are you back yet?
ReplyDeleteBreakfast time. Greetings to all owls. Be back this afternoon for more boring trivia.
ReplyDeleteI was referring to my 40 comments not the other 11. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings here.
ReplyDeleteGood Morning!
ReplyDeleteBONACCI: Great blog! I had the same thought as others have mentioned..sciatic nerve. I've had mine act up on a few occasions..omg that hurts. I remember reaching over to open the curtain in the kitchen when a pain that felt strangely like someone had plucked the string of a guitar ran down the back of my leg. That's the last time I stood up straight for a week. It was awful. I used heat to relax the nerve..a lot of people use ice. Just use something..anything..maybe like scotch or bourbon..to relieve the pain. The sciatic nerve is the biggest in the body..and when it's injured you sure as hell know just how big it is..damn. I hope it's a long long time til your next 'freeze'.
I also have bad knees stemming from two car accidents and one 'I wish I could go back in time and change that' act of stupidity. At my last check-up, my doctor showed me three pictures on the wall. The first was a healthy knee "This is what you had.." the second was an MRI of my left knee "This is what you have now.." the third was a knee replacement "This is two years from now.." Oh joy. I am not looking forward to that..gotta lose weight and do more laps, and hope it helps! My doctor gives me kudos for trying, but says the damage is done.
You're blog was excellent BONACCI..thank you!
TINKA: Congrat on FIRST!!!!! YAY!! I'm so glad I'll get to see your little owl first thing all day.
ReplyDeleteI love that Bambi's dad came to visit. He just knew where the nicest lady on the island lived! I'm going to google those flowers and see what kind are so delish! :D
MEK: Headaches suck, especially in this heat. I hope you are feeling better.
DEEDEE: LOL! I believe they call this 'prarie dogging' or some form of it.. ;P
GOLDIE: I just love your attitude!!
LYNND: I hope you enjoyed your cawfee! You really need to be careful when lifting all those boxes at the foodbank, I hate to think of you in pain. Doing so much good for others should never hurt, though sometimes I guess it does.
BONACCI: The necklace is on it's way to the next destination..it should be there by Monday! I don't know about anyone else..but although Nikki is cute..that's enough of my chest..ijs.. ;)
Have a nice day all..
55..cuz it's my lucky number..twice.. ;)
ReplyDeleteZona - I just googled Yucca plant too. It's the state flower of Mexico. I did not know that. As for the deer, they love almost any flower except for daffodils. Their favourite seems to be roses. They come out to the graveyard every night and decimate every flower except for the daffodils (in spring.) When we left my mother's graveside last August it was covered with flowers mainly roses. I went the next morning and there were only stems. I think they had one big party. By the prints on the ground there were a lot of them. I guess they have to eat too. We have two families at the farm with sweet little fawns. We have a family on our street that just seems to make the rounds. I think they are beautiful and can't imagine anyone killing them.
ReplyDeleteBonacci - I have had just one attack of sciatic nerve pain and I thought I was going to die from it. I use ice every day for my arthritis.
ReplyDeleteok now to read the comments....
ReplyDeleteBonacci:
ReplyDeleteCould be the S-nerve, but could also be a herniated or bulging disc. Your spinal column ends at
L1-L2 and then the nervous tissue takes over as "strands" and mimics S-Nerve pain when they are infringed upon by bulging or herniated discs. You don't need to left anything heavy either as your lumbar section is the weight bearing section of your spinal column and also can be injured by something as simple as rotating the wrong way using a muscle or muscle groups that are not "in shape". And yes I am an expert as I have 65K of titanium in my back as a result of osteoarthritis and my lack of brains when I was told by the doctors at age 26 to stop playing pro ball. All but the L1 discs we're removed in 86' and they wanted to fuse my back then......
Have you seen an orthopod or a neuro to be evaluated? I don't ever wish that kind of pain on anyone. If not please consider seeing someone so you don't end up like I did. Hopefully it is just muscle/nerve related and can be treated with rest/exercise etc.
May I suggest Bananas, Avacados, and anything with high levels of potassium as it can help with the pain. Accupuncture works wonders as well.
Hope you stay upright and pain free.
Bonacci, I haven't read the comments yet, but I had to compliment you on you blog. I envy you and others here who wrote with such flowing words. I hope you write more.
ReplyDeleteAbout your pain. I come here and spill my guts about it lol! I am uncomfortable whining to my family. My Mother was always complaining (she had a right to) about her ills, so I tend to go the opposite way. I must say I am enjoying the hugs and support in my cyber world lol!! Shameful eh?
I love my night owls, they always know what to say.
Tinka! I can't believe you
made # 1! Hooray for you!
I better get busy, I think my Tylenol has kicked in.I have to run to the big city for supplies. Our VFW Ladies Aux. has lost another lady. She was 90, and the Mother of one of my best friends. I am sad for his loss, but happy that he had so many years with her.
Have a great day everyone!!
That should have read "spinal cord" ends at L1-L2, and "lift" not left....
ReplyDeleteMary, quit whining....bwahahahaha
but glad your tooth is not rocking to a different beat anymore.
Carol:
ReplyDeleteThat shooting wasn't near you was it?
75
ReplyDeleteK-Girl - Congrats on once again getting '69'. You are good at it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for health lesson. I learned a lot. I have osteoarthritis and sometimes I lose patience. I know there are a lot of other people with it but I get so annoyed that I can't do what I used to do.
Mary - Glad you tooth is better. I am glad you liked the picture comment I sent you. I thought the little bear with a toothache was pretty cute too.
I am up from my nap and don't quite know what to do today.
I love AVOCADOS.....so good and so good for you.....
ReplyDeleteZona!! Prairie dogging?? OMG!!
Good afternoon all!
ReplyDeleteBonacci, I really enjoyed your blog, and the conversation it has sparked. And DeeDee, I can soooo relate to the "squeeze and hold", lol!
Austin is finally down for a nap and I think grandma needs one too but I wanted to stop in and say hello. There's a reason my "children" are dogs, who sleep 18 hours a day.
Had to go pick up my new Oklahoma driver's license this morning. In Oklahoma City you go down to the ONE office that services the whole city and wait 2 hours (or at least I had to). When they call your number, you go to a window where they test your eyes, take your picture and fingerprints and you do an electronic signature. You then take that to any tag agency to pick up your license.
Well, I went to the DMV on Tuesday, freshly showered with my face on, hair done, and everything. Today when I went to the tag agency to pick up my license, they compared my picture, fingerprints, and signature with what the DMV had and issued my license. The tag agency is just around the corner so I threw on some clothes and packed Austin into the car with a baggie filled with Lucky Charms so we could get in and out of there before the day got too hot.
Nobody told me the picture on it would be the one they took today! I barely ran a comb through my hair, no makeup, and my face looks like ninety miles of bad road. I've had bad DL pics before but this one is the worst! And I'm stuck with it for the next four years unless I want to "lose" it and sit at the DMV for another 2 hours. Oh well, I pity the fool that asks to see it between now and 2013. And if anyone dares to say, "looks just like you", I hope they have good medical.
Quick note-- Tina and group arrived in Colorado this AM. She is presently sitting in a traffic jam from colo spgs to Denver with the boys. They had a school meeting there this afternoon. Will get back later as I think I'd better get in the shower and dressed
ReplyDeleteHello All...Here is the comment I started this morning...before all hell broke loose with Mom, it might be redundant now, but WTH!
ReplyDeleteTinka...Your "Deer Whisperer" gave me a little chuckle this morning...Hope you got back to sleep.
Bonacci...LOVED the blog! I too, have "pondered the carpet", or I would have if we had any. Not being an engineer, I would be happy to swap out parts. Unfortunately, I think there are damaged parts that aren't swappable (is that a word?).
Psst Sounds like a sciatic nerve….don’t sit on any wallets!
Hi to ALL you Hooter Hotties! ...and at this time of year that should include every one of us, in terms of temps if not visual sizzle, right?
ReplyDeleteBonacci~Ouch!! Always fun to see a new writing style and topic here. Thanks!
Had to chuckle at your post above me, Caryn. Gotta love the DMV. Interestingly enough, no matter how bad a new DMV photo is, I've found by that when it's time to renew it years later, I think "Dang, I looked pretty good way back then!" I'm really in for it this time, as my last renewal, in 2007, was the best DL photo I've ever had, and the first that's for EIGHT years rather than 4.
"I've found by that when it's time to renew..."
ReplyDelete*note to self*~~when revising a sentence, read before posting...erase the 'by' please, thanks!
Bonacci:
ReplyDeleteI just realized that I sounded like I was comparing myself to you and that was not my intent. Nor am I the "know it all" when it comes to backs. I am sure that you are a wise woman and have probably been to a doctor or two. I just don't wish that kind of pain and discomfort on anyone nor the process that is needed sometimes to correct it.

ReplyDeleteCaryn - I sympathize with your experience with pictures for drivers' licenses. I had to do that and a passport picture this year. It is very hard on the ego. I had a slight smile on my DL picture and she made me do it again. It is the ugliest picture. This is something new here. I smiled 5 years ago. Now they want a passport type picture with no smile. It looks like a mug shot.
ReplyDeleteScirish - Are you having a bad day with your mom? Do you want to unload? We are here to listen.

ReplyDeleteDianne - Keep us updated on the whereabouts of our Tina. She should be kept out of trouble.
ReplyDeleteBonnie - You lucked out with your 2007 picture. Mine was just the opposite. I hated to pass the old one in. I guess they have to keep them or else we could give them away.
ReplyDeleteIt is a day from heaven here, warm with a slight breeze. I don't want to do anything but sit on my deck and listen to my audiobooks. I have however done 4 loads of wash so I haven't been completely lazy.

ReplyDeleteI did it. I got # 1, 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100 today. Shirley, what prize for I get? I think that's enough marching for me this summer. I am becoming anorexic. See you all tomorrow. Love, Tinka
ReplyDeleteTinka Congrats on being here first this morning. I loved your Deer Whisperer story! How special!
ReplyDeleteBonacci Great blog! I have recurring sciatica problems, although I know I have some degenerative disk disease so maybe it stems from that. I am so sorry you are going through this pain. I had my back go completely out once and was literally helpless. My husband had to help me get dressed, even with my underwear. I was unable to lift my foot more than and 1/2 inch off the floor. I was set up with an appointment with a physical therapist and I shuffled into the room very slowly and he asked me to climb up onto a table and get on my hands and knees. WTF!!! I just burst out crying. There was no way I could lift my leg high enough to get on a table. If I could have done that, I wouldn't have been there in the first place. I'm more of a grin and bear it kind of person and would have just waited for things to get better.
I am just finally able to check out the nest. Wish I'd been able to participate in my own blog. Will read comments as time allows. I do hope everyone's had a great day!!
ReplyDeleteDon't worry TINK..I am on the way out the door to go and meet TINA and you KNOW what a good influence I am on people...:)
ReplyDeleteDianne:
ReplyDeleteLeave the fingerpaints for later k? The boys might not quite understand.....lol
Diane, I was wondering if Tina got on the plane. I wanted to call so bad but knew she had a lot to deal with driving around Colo. with 3 teenagers! Thanks for the update!
ReplyDeleteTina check in soon please :)
BONACCI...very well written blog. I hope you have been evaluated by a physician. I can surely relate to your pain. A few years ago I was sitting on the toilet and leaned over to get a magazine from the basket next to the toilet. A pain that I wish on NOONE shot down my back, ass and leg. I couldn't stand up. I started popping Aleve and alternating heat and ice to no avail. I couldn't sit or lay down...only stand and walk. I finally went to the Urgent Care and then to a doc where an MRI revealed 2 herniated discs, spinal stenosis and arthritis. Been thru P.T and medication. I had a round of three shots in the spine and thank god I can function. I refuse to have surgery. I still get pain, but usually Advil takes care of it. Sometimes...usually when I am asleep...my leg tenses up and contracts and wakes me up. I ahve to maneuver it back out. But you get used to it.
ReplyDeleteTURTLE...you are amazing!!
CAROL...so sad about the shooting in your state. I hope it was no where near you or your family.
CARYN...so nice to see you back in the nest. Sounds like you made the right decision to move to OK. I loved your license story! My wallet had been stolen and I was actually happy to go get a new license as my photo was AWFUL. I got gussied up and went to DMV only to be told they only grab the pic that was already in the computer...stuck with the nightmare photo!!
finger p-a-i-n-t-s! am I the only one that keeps reading finger p-r-i-n-t-s lol!!
ReplyDeleteHey hooters!
ReplyDeleteAwesome blog today Bonaci! I've had an episode of sciatica once, on an Easter Sunday. Owieee!
There are so many great comments and I am too tired to address them all. Had a super busy day at work, then got out late.
Kgirl we must be tied for 69 by now or you have passed me up!
I will check back later, or tomorrow. I hope everyone had a great day!
DeeDee, it's always those sneaky farts that get us! In theory, it's an activity reserved only for men and the dog, yes?
ReplyDeleteLynnD; I don't think I have a problem with my sciatic nerve. Just my sarcastic one.
ReplyDeleteTink, I read your comment about boring trivia... The nest is full of a lot of things, but boring trivia isn't one of them. It's fascinating, hilarious, fun, educational and above all, full of love.
ReplyDeleteZona, I'm not too concerned with diagnosing whatever is happening with my body... I'm still walking, talking and being my usual smart-ass self, so all can't be lost.
ReplyDeleteI just found it amusing that one minute everything's normal, and the next minute, we can do some impressive imitations of statues. Well, that and the lengths some of us are willing to go to to keep others from finding out.
Hi Everyone!!!
ReplyDeleteMo and Turtle..
Jersey City is about 20min from me, so I am well as my surrounding family and friends are.. I read the story in our local online paper today, just really glad all the JCP officers are ok, I heard two were critical but I have lots of hope..
Tinka..
You did it.. you got first.. Congrats.. and I see many others as well. it was just your day.. sooo double Congrats
Bonacci..
It is so true, how our bodies are somewhat like machines, which often break down, sometimes it is our way of life that brings it on, and sometimes the machine was just not built so well.. I hope you find relief from your back pain
Thanks for writing the blog and sending it off to me, I appreciate it..
Tina..
Glad you made it to Denver.. now let the kids loose and have a martini with Dianne
Dee..
Your comment had me laughing, I so know the squeeze apply as well, LOL
Goldie..
Welcome back, glad you enjoyed your vaca..
Mo..
Very good to see ya.. did it get muggy by you all of a sudden, our weather here changed so much in one day.. YUCK..
Mek...
So, how is that beautiful hole of yours.. I see its getting its plumbing..
Zona..
Thanks for saying what you did in Area 51.. I appreciate it.
Mary..
Hope your tooth is better.. these damn teeth of ours are nothing but problems.. If I was rich.. I would pull them all out and put in veeners (sp)
I have breaking news.. and its all about me.. lol
ReplyDeleteI have been doing 45 to 50 min on the treadmill each nite.. and I am no longer sore the next day.. I am coming up on 2 months.. and finally I can say, by body is starting to fall into place with the treadmill..
I am so very happy....
Bon'O..
ReplyDeleteI agree, new blogs from bloggers, always seem to freshin things up a bit..
Caryn..
ReplyDeleteI know our DL pics are more like Mug Shots.. Yikes....
Scirish..
Hope your day turned out better, and mom is ok..
Dee..
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention.. "Aisle 7" lmao.
The power when out in my office today and my surrounding area for about 1/2 hour.. There as still been not explained reason way.. Tried calling our utility company.. but we were on hold just as long as it took for the power to come up.. but what a pain.. Our computers were all out of sorts, I had to reprogram the phones etc, etc. It also put me behind on my work.. I was of course freakin out, cause that is just what I do.. While this is all happening, my time of the month decided to appear, along with a client of ours who lives in Tehran.. so while I am freaking out, running to the bathroom, throwing things to whoever is willing to take the hit. Dr Hooshman (client from Tehran) decides he wants to chat about the unrest in his country in the dark, sweating our arse's off..
ReplyDeleteOy vey!

ReplyDeleteHi Tinka.. it seems you got 120 as well.. :O)
ReplyDeleteDianne - I am very reassured that you will take the best of care of Tina. I think you are great.
ReplyDeleteBonacci - Thanks for the reassurance that my trivia wasn't too boring. When I counted up the number of times the little brown own showed up today I was embarrassed. It seemed to close the blog down for a long time.

ReplyDeleteBonacci: in an intro to Philosophy course I took way back in college, the teaching assistant would give us little philosophical issues to ponder. Our assignment was to try to make sense of the puzzles by writing short essays about them.
ReplyDeleteYour blog forcefully reminded me of one puzzle in particular, as captured in the following simple statement:
"My body is aching and my mind is confused".
Discuss.
When you say "my body" or "my mind", what exactly is the thing that's claiming ownership, and what exactly is "it" assuming ownership of? Is it correct to refer to "my" body if you reject dualism, and mind and body are the same thing? Or, if you are a dualist, and believe the mind is at least somewhat independent of the body, how can there be true ownership?
Does it really make sense for the conscious part of the mind to refer to "my" mind? Doesn't that imply that one part of the mind is separable from another part, and one part is taking ownership over the other? What part of our mind constitutes this "owner", and what part constitutes the "owned"?
It's nothing short of... mind boggling!
Carol - I got 125 today as well. It was my lucky day. Tomorrow my son and his wife celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary so I will be out of town. See you all on Sunday. Be good. Love,Tinka
ReplyDeleteI am hoping my buck will visit me again tonight. (That somehow doesn't look right but you all know what I mean).
signed "The Deer Whisperer
Tinka.. enjoy your time with the family..
ReplyDeleteWhabby..
ReplyDeleteMy mind is always confused, even when its not aching.. :O)
I am off to bed..
ReplyDeletec u all tomorrow..
Nite!
Deer Whiperer,
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of a buck, a sexy, young, muscular image comes to mind (the kind with 2 legs) LOL
Maybe 3 legs, and definitely has "horns"
ReplyDeletehee hee
Nitey nite Carol, queen of the treadmill!
ReplyDeleteTinka, you had me in tears (laughing), you kinda-sorta snuck in a little porn lol!
ReplyDeleteBona, I hope you are feeling better, quit being so dam brave :)
Carol, bummer about he power going out and your Aunti Flo showing up..figures eh? Good night.
Whabby, now I have a headache to go with my toothache! Isn't anything just "simple" for you lol!! You remind me of my Hubby who is an engineer, he has to over explain and dissect everything!
I want to thank all of you for your encouraging compliments. As many of you know, writing is akin to that "deer in the headlights" feeling.
ReplyDeleteAdd the self-imposed humiliation of sharing my life, and you have the metaphorical equivalent of blowing up the chemistry lab.
Sarah Lee posted this on facebook
ReplyDeleteSarah Lee Fellow friends of LOIS LANE - I talked to her tonight, and she asked me to let you all know that her mother is having quadruple bypass surgery on Tuesday morning. Please keep her mom and her family in your prayers. Her computer is only letting her on for 10-15 minutes at a time, which is why she hasn't been online much. I am going to call her again next week to see how her mom is and will update on here again.
Bonacci, I just noticed I shortened you name on my last comment to you sorry.
ReplyDeleteGood night sweet owls and happy lurkers!
ReplyDeleteMary Thank you for forwarding Sarah Lee's message concering Lois Lane's mother. I will certainly be keeping her in my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteBonacci Thanks again for your great blog today.
ReplyDeleteGood night, HOoters!
Whab, You yourself are mind boggling. I have "smart" days when I understand some of what you say. During rare instances of clarity (on my part) you make so much sense to me.
ReplyDeleteA doc once told me I should take care of my body because its what I live in. I see the machine of my dad's body showing signs of wear and tear. It's going to happen to all of us.
He and I are lucky in that we both are of sound design, but our bodies weren't designed to last forever. Our minds though, I believe are seperate. Take dementia, for instance. Maybe the body outlasts the mind?
Mary, call me anything you want... doesn't bother me a bit!
ReplyDeleteI'm back from spending some time with TINA and the boys. We dropped them off at their game and then we went on a driving trip to find a place for dinner. TINA took that camera everywhere with her but to my luck never took it out of the case!! The boys seemed to have a good time and now I am home.
ReplyDeleteBONACCI: Interesting blog and lots of good advice from everyone.
TINK: I doubt you will even see this but I am laughing wondering if the buck is visiting you yet---sounds exciting to me.l
MARY: You should have called or text me to see if TINA was "in flight".
JUST/LIN: Thanks for giving me QOTD
Better get to bed....painting is tomorrow :)
Good Morning Everyone!!!!
