~ When Did It Become Okay To Scream Obscenities in Public? ~

by Tina~in_ut

Over the holiday weekend, I went to WalMart to get a passport picture taken. I don't know what I was thinking!!! I usually go there late at night to avoid the crowds and here I was in the middle of the day with everyone and their brother! As I was nearing the entrance, there was a big truck with a man driving and a woman in the passenger seat facing the door and another car perpendicular to him with a man in it. I normally wouldn't have noticed them......I don't notice anything.....but one of them honked. I looked up to see the Truck man taking off his seat belt. Car man was kinda leaning out his window looking at the other man. Truck man started yelling and when I actually started paying attention, I realized he was cussing at the top of his lungs. I'm no prude (no laughing!), but there was no reason for it! There were children all around and I live in a very conservative area, so you know there were people around that were offended. Truck man went so far as to open his door and started to get out, all the while cussing like a madman! I thought at first that it was a racial thing. Truck man was white and Car man was either Mexican or Asian (I couldn't get a good look at him, okay?!!). Then I noticed Truck wife. She was Polynesian. Whatever the problem was, I just couldn't believe it was bad enough to warrant what I and many others were hearing.

Two days later, I went to the grocery store after work. I park at the end of the parking lot so my beautiful new car won't get a scratch on it! Sitting under a tree at the end of the next row was a strange man. Well, he wasn't actually strange. I just thought it was strange that he was way out there sitting in a parking lot on such a hot day. I went in and did my shopping and when I came out, I heard some man screaming at the top of his lungs. It was like deja vu! I looked over by the street and there was my strange guy yelling into his phone and cussing just like Truck man. This guy seemed to be furious and was really scary. He hung up his phone and I got the heck outta there.

What I'd like to know is, when did it become okay to scream obscenities in public? I like the occasional cuss word on the blog or with my co-workers or even in the car with a friend in Denver~ What these people were doing was rude and offensive. It's sad really~

  1. Morning Glories!

Holy Crow Whabby got first! I think that is a first, if I am not mistaken. Congrats Whabby!

Tina I will be back in a bit to comment on your blog as I have so many thoughts running through my head. I need coffee to help me focus!

  3. Good morning Whab, Lynn D and Tine! Happy Friday! Whab, now that you're old, will you be going to bed early and waking up early?

I've found that people become agressive and rude when you put them in cars. It's like a complete personality change. My mother did that. Get her in a car and she'd yank that thing around like Mario Andretti, swearing and yelling at everyone on the road. I finally stopped getting in the car with her.

They're deadly weapons, folks. We should use care when handling them.

  7. Tina..

LOL.. on your descriptions.. truck guy, car man..

Unfortunately, ppl do as they please, America had turned into a fowl melting pot, and sorry to say but it will only get worse. Ppl have no cares for their surroundings and who they might offend, it is just one rude person after the next.. as you said..

    "sad really"

    Congrats to Bear this morning!

Tina, I agree with you. I am sometimes shocked at how people speak in public.

Hope you have a good time in Denver!

  15. G'morning All!

TINA: I just love the way you write..I can almost see, and hear what you're describing. OH MY..did he really say THAT? ;)

It seems to me that there are more and more people who have stopped worrying about what they do or say in public. They don't seem to care who they might offend..they're kinda lost in their own world. I don't really think it ever became okay..I just think it's a matter of not thinking or caring about others. Kinda sad really.

    Great blog today TINA_in_Denver..thank you!

  16. Good Morning Hooters!

congrats on being cursed, first Whab!

Tina~ I don't believe it is ok, but that sure doesn't stop people. Like I always say - when people are trying to make a point and use obscenities to do so- they lose credibility.

Mr. Goldie and I were at a stop light and the guy(probably in his later 60's) in the right lane next to us did not turn right on red (allowable in WI). The truck behind him kept honking and honking then yelling. The guy got out of the car, walked back to the truck. Don't know what was said but the guy in the truck reached out and punched the guy!

There is just too much rage in this world!

Carol- first you are thinking of Mo then you are smelling her? LOL
J/k- HI MO wherever you are at the moment.

Hope everyone has a good day. Off to the camper at noon and back on Sunday night!

  22. good morning everyone.....

WalMart is THE place it seems to hear it all. And I am not a racist but it always seems to be black women with children who have the most shocking and disgusting ways with words. And they don't seem to care who hears them. I have told more than my share to shut their filthy mouthes at the risk of a Jerry Springer-esque.. weave snatching rumble right there in ramen noodle aisle!
Seems the word combo of choice is MF this and MF that...

Don't get me wrong....I enjoy occasional well placed profanity...but what I hear seems to be their overall vernacular.

All this takes me back to the face of a 12 or 13 year old girl that I was in line behind to checkout one night. What was apparently the childs Mother was at the register when the 13 year old and what I assume were her younger brothers and sisters came up and crowded past me to show their Mother a few articles of clothing they had picked out for school....which was starting the next day...and it was apparent from looking at these kids that the clothes were much needed.....the Mother literally screamed through her snaggled gold teeth...

I told you damn kids they ain't no MF money for no MF clothes....so go put the MF's back!!!

She was...however.... able to pay for a substantial amount of beer in her cart as well as two cartons of cigarettes....

The look on that teenagers face was one I will never forget....she didn't talk back to her Mother...all she did was turn and take the kids to put the clothes back.....I wanted sooo badly to ask her to let me take the kids shopping for what they needed for school and bring them home myself....but I was afraid of setting off the MF again so I remained silent and have regretted it ever since....

  23. Ok gang this is a WARNING long post alert!

These are trends that I am seeing that have had my mind racing and in turmoil for the last few weeks and months.

I am going to scrub names from these posts as it is not meant to be a political statement about one party or another just an observation of a slipping slope of civility in our national discourse.

When did it become okay to say these things???

1 you have come a long way. You have worked very hard you have earned the respect of Ken Starr... and you have said some things that just bug the hell out of me,". Switching to some of her more controversial statements, he asked: "To those who may be bothered by that, what do you say?"

"I regret that I have offended some people," Sotomayor responded. "I believe that my life demonstrates that that was not my intent to leave the impression that some have taken from my words."

This was a questioned asked in the confirmation hearing of Judge Sotomayor. What struck me was, why did this person even have to say "you have said some things that bug the hell out of me"? I felt that this was meant to be a put down and was bad form all the way around IMHO.

2.. nominee for Virginia's 99th District in the House of Delegates, gave a speech at a recent Tea Party event suggesting that Second Amendment rights could be used to defend the anti-tax movement. The strange assertion was picked up by Virginia political blogger.

"We have the chance to fight this battle at the ballot box before we have to resort to the bullet box," "That's the beauty of our Second Amendment rights ... Our Second Amendment rights were to guard against tyranny."

What the heck is this person suggesting???? Very disturbing to me.

3."The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States....only Osama can execute an attack which will force Americans to demand that their government protect them."

STEWART: "What the fuck is that? And by the way, here's the fascinating thing about our culture. My guess is that you didn't hear me say "fuck." Because the Federal government is protecting you and your children's ears from that type of profanity. While, Santa's evil twin gets to, uhh...gets to nonchalantly proposes the needless slaughter of Americans to further his national security plan. But, obviously, in this country, everyone's entitled to their dope-pinion."

I did leave John Stewarts name in as this was his response to this persons quote from an interview on another TV show. I think his response about this was right on. The f word was bleeped on his show.

My response was that what this man said was worse than any profanity uttered by John Stewart. IMHO.

There will be a part II.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Part II

4.. Missouri State Representative is one tough cookie. Last week she opposed subsidizing school lunches for low income children during summer months saying, "Hunger can be a positive motivator."

This is excellent news considering 1 in 5 Missouri kids is living in hunger, so that state is due for a productivity boon.

Seen on another TV show but I had read about this State Representative in the news. Again when did it become ok to basically say let the kids starve. Another obscene statement in my book. Yes I may be biased as I volunteer in a food bank but to me this is just inexcusable and borders on criminal.

There have been a few others in the last week, a pundit on MSNBC trying to make her point by pointedly talking about a blow job in the white house. Can't remember the full quote. I saw it and laughed but when I reflected on it more it really disturbed me that she could not make her point in a more mature manner. Hello you are on TV!

A CNBC Anchor calling out a blogger that commented on his blog page, again on national TV. He called the blogger a dickweed for disagreeing with him.

Tina I think there is an overall degrading of discourse. I agree for them to lose it in public with small children and families around is ridiculous!

That said I will take a fuck you any day over some the crazy sauce that seems to be flowing in our country when you say things in the media suggesting. Insurrection, attacks on fellow Americans, letting children go hungry, Promoting violence against Gays, blacks, latinos, women etc....

When it comes across in the media I feel some people take this as a sign that it is ok to let there inner hate come out. It is just down right scary.

I tried to warn you! LOL

  25. A note about Driver's License pics: You can't beat 'em, so just join them. I dress up, Eunice Style, for mine. The stranger, the better!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Dee Dee your post just broke my heart. Sadly I know some people who are lacking and think the f word is a verb, noun, preposition etc... all in one sentence. How do we break the cycle???

I kept thinking I wanted to buy their clothes as I was reading your post. (sigh).

    ReplyDelete
  27. I have a note about the Drivers license pictures too. My picture is about about 6 years old. We renew in our state every 5 years.

I get to renew mine by mail because I have been at my address for so long. They just use the same picture.

What makes me laugh is that my hair is very short and all gray in the pic and I am wearing contact lenses.

I wear glasses all the time now and my hair is now dyed light brown and is jaw length! Makes me snicker every time I have to show it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh and we won't talk about the weight posted on the license! That is different to.

  29. Maybe I'm having an Ann Coulter moment. One solution I see to end children't hunger is for the parents to stop having them! If you can't feed the one you've got, why produce another you know you can't feed?

No child should go hungry, but I see a lot of parents hiding behind their children to get state and federal aid.

I was recently approached by a woman with three children. She asked me if I could spare a few dollars so she could buy her kids a meal.

I told her I'd be happy to take her kids into the Subway next door any buy them all any sandwich they wanted. That got me a verbal ass-whuppin'. The "mother" wanted money for drugs. Not to feed the kids.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Bonacci, there is no doubt that there are men and women who will always try to play the system. I see them every week. Personally I have little patience for them and do not in any way excuse there behavior. However when there are children involved it is a whole different matter for me. I can't live with myself if I see a child hungry in my community because the adult in the home is irresponsible. That is one of the main reasons I volunteer. There are a few others.

I agree we should be expanding education in birth control and responsibility not cutting back and selling only abstinence only. But in your situation you answered your own question when you said the Mother was drug addicted. I see these people too and am always appalled as to why they still have custody of their children. The system is so broken.

I also have to ask "where are the fathers"?

I just do my part the only way I know how. I also have been known to let people know where their local food banks are and the times of operations. I point blank let them know I will not give them cash but will help with getting them food.

I am just appalled when anyone basically says to bad kid no food for you. Should have picked better parents. Also where do we draw the age line for helping hungry children. 17, 16........5,6,3?

Hungry is hungry to me. I don't care how old they are.

I will tell you the percentage of people I see that are working the system is really in the 5 percent or lower area. Most are there because they really need help and are very grateful. There are days when it is hard to remember that. You know how our minds seem to hold onto the negative and re-run that loop.

I will share this with you. Just before (about a month before) school was out here. The lunch lady at our local Jr. High called she had a young boy who went into a total melt down because he was being suspended from school for getting into a fight. He probably deserved getting suspended but what she witnessed was that he was in a blind panic because if he was suspended he would have absolutely nothing to eat! The only food he was getting daily was at school, breakfast and lunch.

We were called to see if next year could we look into offering a back pack program for these children who may not even be getting fed on the weekends. There are about 10 children in our school district that the teachers themselves have been bringing food to feed. We live in a very small community.

I have to say this made me cry! No wonder this child is getting into fights. The school has reported all of this to child services but like I said it truly is a broken system.

So I get very upset when anyone makes a statement that to me says punish the child because of the idiots that had them.

One last comment, the woman in my post is an elected official and sits on a board that deals with childrens issue. Another side note she owns and operates a "Christian" Book store. That was truly a WTF moment for me.

To me this is an obscenity worse than any curse word uttered.

    Sorry another long post.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Bear Congrats on first today! That was a surprise. :)

Tina I'm no stranger to four letter words but I agree that spouting profanities in public is rude and unacceptable. I had a similar experience in a store recently, where some guy in his mid 20's was yelling into his cell phone, using all sorts of profanity, completely not caring who could hear him. I don't know if it's become easier because we hear all this words on cable TV all the time so it makes it seem more acceptable or what.

LynnD What a horrible statement that was by the female elected official.

DeeDee So many people out there should not be trusted with children. That woman is crushing the spirit of her kids. I feel so bad for them.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I did a double take!! Whabby was first! Congrats on you "cherry" moment !!
I am off to read the comments....

  33. Tina, I live in a rural area. We have our share of loudmouths, but public profanity is rare. Our VFW post allows no profanity other than a "dam, shit, or hell" Even in bars, patrons are told to zip it especially if there are woman there, but then we still have men open our doors for us, so maybe we are not advanced yet lol! I have to admit when I was working at Gen. Mo. I heard and said more than my share of colorful language lol!
I have seen woman jerk and drag their kids in stores. That just about breaks my heart

    Carol, had your bacon yet?

Goldie, I LMAO @ "Carol smelling MO"

iteach, freckles in the eye?? who knew??

Zona, so sorry you and Mr Zona are not feeling well! :(

  34. I think kids are the innocent victims of "big people". My niece just had a baby at 19. The father is wanted in the state of CO. My niece was taking crysal meth when she got pregnant.

She lived with my sister, but was sent to her dads because my sister and niece are both not very easy to get along with. The baby was born, but my niece caused so many problems that she was kicked out. Her dad/step mom wanted to adopt the baby, but get rid of the mother.

Not my niece lives in my sister's house. My sister travels for work as much as possible to avoid her own daughter. My niece sits on her arse watching TV all day, using the excuse that she has to take care of the baby.

In my opinion, that girl (my niece) should have had her tubes tied when she had that kid. Her irresponsibility has ruined 9 lives, not including the bably's, who may or may not be affected by the drugs the mother took. It's too early to tell.

And yes, the father bears some responsibility (but I think it's best if he's not involved), but he didn't force the little harlot to spread her legs.

I'm done being judgemental now. Sorry for any offense I'm sure I caused.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I realize "harlot" is a harsh word. Unfortunately, since the baby was born in January, this girl's parents have caught her in bed with 6 different men. In THEIR homes! It seems a fitting word.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Bonacci, I have heard that a child's
character is molded before it reaches the age of 5. I wonder where it all went "south"for her? I sure hope she wakes up before the baby follows in her footsteps!

  41. Mary, when my niece was 14, I was surprised that my sister would allow her to go out dressed the way she did. She also seemed "boy crazy" but I thought she'd grow out of it. Sometimes the writing really is on the wall.

My ex-brother-in-law is a good man and his wife is wonderful. I'd love to see them raise this baby. Besides the two girls he has with my sister, he has 4 with his new wife and. My sister raised "Mommy Dearest" - the other child of that marriage is finishing college and a delightful young woman.

    ReplyDelete
  48. BONACCI: See, aren't you glad you have the pool now to clean your dogs. Do you swim with them or are they just in there alone?

TINA: This is a very interesting blog and it was even more interesting to see it acted out in real life with these last couple of days while you were driving!! I have to admit I was scared sometimes when you jumped out of the car, handed me the video and had that bat in your hand....remember, I have to keep living here!

ZONA: I'm sorry you and your husband are under the weather. I guess with those temps you don't mind being chilled! I hope you get better.

Ok...now for the paint story.....My husband had the paint can from when ZONA was here out on the counter when TINA arrived. I decided not to participate as we do the painting every night so it is old hat to me, so to speak. I heard TINA squealing ( I don't know if it was with delight or if the paint was cold) but it was squealing just the same. I finally went out to see what was going on and they were already cleaning up. She wouldn't let me video and there wasn't a drop of paint to be found. The drop cloth was even fairly clean. The can of paint.....empty. So, sorry no pictures but at least you can each imagine from the TRUE story I am telling.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I see TINA was posting and marching while I was too. There is something about her getting the 69 when she is sitting right next to me that kind of grosses me out. MrD will be running in here to see what all the damn noise is about...

    ReplyDelete
  50. TINA...the bottom line is that it isn't ok, but some people didn't get that memo. And it shows a lack of respect for others and even less self respect. I would fucking never swear in public or on blog!!!

LYNN...have I told you are a rock star lately?? You're a rock star!!

ITEACH...I have freckles in both eyes! A couple of little ones in my left eye and a huge one in my right eye...looks like I have 2 pupils...or one mutant one!

CAROL...I had a weird feeling of being sniffed this morning..now I know why!! Bacon's here!!

ZONA...cooling and soothing {{hugs}} heading southwest of here.

DIANNE...yeah, right!! You were so in on it!!!!

    GOLDIE...HI! I'm right here!

DEE DEE...I have had the same reaction as you. I would get so mad when I see people at the gross-ry store with food stamps, but paying out of pocket for booze, plants, 50# bags of big dog dog food, steaks and magazines. Ggrrrrr
