Funny Girl

Chosen by Zona

Barbra Streisand has been one of my favorite singers for as long as I can remember. In the early 70's my folks bought me the Original Broadway cast album of "Funny Girl" for my birthday. I played it so much I not only wore the record out, I wore my family out as well. I didn't have headphones back then..so when I blasted my music...everyone in the house got to 'enjoy' it with me. Although I loved the entire album, "Don't Rain On My Parade" was my favorite song. It somehow struck a chord with the shy girl that I was, and made me feel like I could do anything...no matter who or what stood in my way. I would turn the volume up as loud as I dared and play it over and over and over...singing along with Barbra at the top of my lungs. My poor sister...she would cover her ears and run to the furthest corner of the house, begging our folks to make me stop. My dad would knock on the bedroom door and tell me to turn off the music..and I would..until the next day. Almost forty years later, my sis still can't stand this song. How do I know? Well, every once in a while, just for fun, I'll sing the first line for her..she immediately clamps her hands down over her ears and yells "NO!!". I love this song as much now as I did back then. It still makes me want to go out and conquer the world...and when I hear it...I almost feel as if I could do just that.

  5. Good morning, Carol! Zona, I didn't like Barbara early on. Then I came to appreciate her. I respect her for standing up to "conventional wisdom" and retaining her identity er, nose. Identity. Yes.

A beautiful Sunday wish going out to all the owls!

  9. Morning Glories!

Congrats on first Carol!!!! Is this your first first? Maybe your second first? I know it is a rare first.

Zona Have always liked and even loved Streisands music. Really like Evergreen. I listen to her music and what gets me the most is the connection she has to the words and meaning of the song she is singing. She tells a story with her voice and emotions and takes the listener along. This is rare, I think in performers and in my opinion what is missing from most music today.

Love your blog today! Waving at everyone!

  11. Guten Morgen whorgens.....

OMGoodness....Streisand....a national treasure....her entire body of work...I love it all....shes like buttah!

And you know I have always heard that a nose job could have affected her sing voice....something about a deviated septum??

But picture this....its 1984....I am flying out to L.A. one evening for the weekend....Thomas picks me up at LAX in a Porsche Targa with the top off....we are rocketing around near century city with that alpine stereo blasting Streisands "SUPERMAN"......Hollywood... Sunset.....the Polo Lounge for drinks.....
I don't know what it was.....we had done the same thing many times before........but what I recall most is Barbra singing SUPERMAN....so I must say.....it was Barbra that made the night special.......

Thank you Zona....the pleasure was all mine......

ZONA...love Babs! And I am glad she never got a nose job. Even if it wouldnt have affected her singing voice, she is beautiful as she is. And her talent is second to none. Thanks for the bloggy!

Good morning to DEE DEE, BEBBI, CHI CHI, GOLDIE and LYNN!

  13. Zona: I do have some gay genes after all... I LOVE LOVE LOVE Babs!!!

But now for something completely different:

I am so psyched this morning over Obama's comments last night! I was particularly happy with what he said about the worth of same-sex couples. It gives me hope that, someday, gay couples will regain the right to marry here in California.

And as you all know, there's a march for equal rights going on today in Washington. In keeping with the march, and this being Sunday, I hope you will follow the link below and read this story from Newsweek:

    Amen!

It gives me hope that even the most virulent of anti-gay evangelicals will someday see the light, and allow all people into their congregations.

And to that, I say, Amen, indeed!

  20. Great pic Zona! I love Barbra's singing. I haven't seen alot of her movies, but her singing voice is awesome! I remember when she came on Rosie's show, and how nice she was to her. Rosie was just a pile of tears. I may even have that on a video tape somewhere.

  21. Carol Congrats on first!

Zona Great song for today! I like the message of this song, too. Barbra is definitely one of a kind and a great singer.

Unfortunately, the Falcons are raining (or worse) on the 49ers right now. During a break, the commentators did take a moment to say how ugly the Denver Bronco uniforms are today. Sorry Dianne. LOL

I went clothes shopping today, I have been putting if off cause I knew I gained weight even tho I am going to the gym, it does not matter if you don't watch what you eat...So yes I gained weight.. I walked away with hardly anything, cause nothing fit right. I knew this going in cause I know my body. I am unhappy with myself right now, a little depressed cause I let myself go.. I have to start really really watching what I eat.. I hope I can, cause I don't like this feeling..

YUM!!!) for dessert. Plus we had pumpkin pie, apple pie and apple crisp.

CAROL...at least take comfort in knowing that your workouts are making you healthier.

  45. I pop in and learn Whabby is gay!

Then went into a panic when I read Sacbarbs post about Happy Thanksgiving and had to pause a moment to realize no not us stupid! Canada. Crap for a moment I had a brain fart and thought shit my memory is really going! (It is but we will keep that a secret).

  46. Hi Everyone!

Mr. Z has been on the computer most of the day putting together a project for work. I was finally able to get him off! The computer I mean..I was able to get him off the computer... ;)

Thanks for all the comments on the blog today. When CAROL suggested to 'write about something you know'..this song came to mind immediately. Boy, do I know this song! Every note, every word..every nuance. I even know the differences between the way she sings it for the movie and on Broadway. I just love it.

CAROL: Congrats on FIRST! I love how your little owl is looking at the comment box..lol..

GOLDIE: They filmed parts of 'A Star Is Born' at ASU in Tempe. I was in high school when the production company for the movie asked for extras to fill the stadium. Half of our school ditched and went to be in the movie!

BONACHI: When she was young..she could be a little abrasive..but I think that may have been shyness. I know..that sounds weird..doesn't it?

LYNND: "Evergreen" is Mr Z's and my song.. :)

DEEDEE: "Superman" is a great song..I can just see you driving through the city..this song filling the night..

MO: I can't imagine Streisand with a different nose either..it's part of what makes her Barbra..that and her nails.. :)

SACBARB: I love them all too..

SCIRISH: The duet with Neil Diamond is a classic..and to think it was pretty much an accident. Cool too that they went to the same school as kids in New York!

BEAR: 'Somewhere' always gives me goosebumps..

J/LIN: I think it was the message that made me like this song so much too. Now..who won the game?

EBJ: I don't think there is a bad Streisand song! :)

SHIRLEY: It was like a dream come true for Rosie when she was on..just magic. btw..am I too late for dinner? ;)

I think this is gonna be one long post..lol..

Mr Z needs the computer back..sigh..

MO: I think you were right about saying no to my sister.. ;)

Have a great night everyone! :D

  47. I'm sure we're all shocked to learn of Whab. Who'da thunk?

  48. I'm sure we're all shocked to learn of Whab. Who'da thunk?

  49. Crap. A double post. Never done that before. I should stop beating the shit out of my computer.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well. Wasn't that special. I settled in to watch a nice movie. Damn thing scared the crap out of me in the first 60 seconds. What did I expect? It's called Drag Me To Hell.

    I'm not watching that movie.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Maybe it is just me, but refering to a movie called Drag Me to Hell as a 'nice' movie is kinda like an oxymoron!

DIANNE...Didja see...the Brown's actually won! We didn't score a touchdown, but it was a win none the less!

    ReplyDelete
  52. For some reason I thought I had already read the blog and posted today! NOT!
I liked Babs in A Star is Born, and a few of the older musicals. Not so much now. My tastes have changed.

Zona, I almost spit out my pizza @ your getting Mr Zona off!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. ZONA: I love your blog today and I love Barbra too. I can sing almost like her when I sing along with her songs. Well, I think I sound just like her..guess you would have to hear to make the judgement BUT I am sure your would agree!!

Happy Thanksgiving to the Canada Owls. Hope you enjoy your long weekend. SHIRLEY: Yum, does your dinner sound good. I am sure there will be plenty of leftovers, right? And TINK, did you make your famous buns?

BEAR is gay? I am so surprised. He didn't seem like it when I met him and he wanted me to dance with him around the cafe/restaurant. Shit, all this time I thought he was hitting on me!!

Now to talk to you J/L...the Broncos won today. Yes, we beat the New England Patriots. We are (are you listening) 5-0!!! We won in OT. Our uniforms are called the "throw-back uniforms" from 50 years ago when we played the Patriots. We will wear them for two games. Hey, we could have played naked for all I care (well, that would have been nice except it was very cold) as long as we won. How did your team do today, Owls?

BTW, my fantasy football team has come up with 20 points. The guy that MR D stole from me....14 points just from him for MRD's team. I think I am not over this yet! :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Whabbear can't be gay! He's married!!
    Good grief!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Dee Dee: Who was Thomas? Inquiring gay minds want to know!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Dianne: LOL! I have to stop meeting bloggers for real!

First Canadian Girl lets slip about our torrid night of sex when we met up in LA, and now Dianne is spilling the beans about what really went on at that restaurant in Denver.

What's next? Zona and MEK and our three-way? Sneaking away with Sharon at the first BABB?

Where is this going to end? With me being "outed" as a straight man?

    Something tells me... not.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Dianne and Zona My 49ers were beaten BADLY. It was embarrassing, really.

    ReplyDelete
  58. J/L: It was really disheartening! I thought the niners were on a roll...

    ReplyDelete
  59. They rolled right off of a cliff...

    ReplyDelete
  60. Well it is 7:00AM here (no I have been in ben since 1AM) and I up to take my kids to the airport. I was hoping a blog was early so I could be first. Soooooo, I am going to declare myself first today, Monday, October 12!! BBL
