Chances Are.....

Me @ 13

"Chances Are"

and
"Its Not For Me To Say"

by Johnny Mathis

chosen by Just_Lin

Her bedroom is dark and the window is wide open. The night air is finally cooling off after another hot summer day in Southern California. Lying there in the dark, the young girl feels the breeze come in through the window and slowly move over her skin like cool water, bringing refreshment and relief to her sunburned skin. She reaches over and lifts the arm of her portable record player and gently sets the needle down on the spinning LP. First there is the hiss of the needle against the vinyl as it whispers into the darkened room, then the first note fills the air. The girl recognizes the song immediately by just that one note and she will just as readily know every other song that follows just by hearing the very first note of each. She has played this record so many times, on so many similar nights, that she knows all the notes and all the words by heart. It is her favorite record for romantic dreaming.

She is thirteen years old in 1960 and Johnny Mathis sings in sweet and velvety tones of a love and romance that she has yet to experience but is anxiously awaiting. Her heart rides the waves of Johnny's beautiful voice and she imagines that love will be as wonderful as his songs promise it will be. She sways slightly, dreaming that she is dancing in the arms of a lover that she hasn't yet met........but there's always tomorrow. At thirteen, all things are possible.

  14. We have not decided what we are doing for Thanksgiving here. One Daughter has invited us over but Mr. Lynn D is making the decision because I think he would like to stay home and eat turkey all day and yell at the football games.

Me I think I would love for someone else to cook. LOL But a day at home with no worries except for food and TV or reading sounds kind of wonderful too. Oh yeah and staying sweat pants and no bra is a great enticement.

J/L You are so Beautiful! I think that song was sung by someone else tho.

  17. Mornin' Hooters.

Thank you for the kind words about the blog. It is part of my childhood memories.

I am here in the house I grew up in and am sleeping in that same bedroom that used to be mine. It will just be me, my mom and brother. It will be a nice relaxing day.

LynnD -- these songs are part of Johnny's Greatest Hits album that I listened to endlessly.

  20. Good Morning!

J/LIN: Swoooon...Johnny Mathis...I have always loved his voice. I played 'Misty' over..with the same hopes and dreams as you had. I love your writing J/LIN..you captured a moment from the past and made it seem like it was happening right before our eyes. And your picture..absolutely beautiful!

    Great blog today J/LIN..thank you!

  21. ITEACH: Congrats on FIRST! Our Thanksgiving is going to be simple..my sister and Mr Z and I. My cousins sometimes come visit for dessert...which will be apple crisp from JODI's recipe..and my mom's strawberry cheesecake. In fact..it seems friends and neighbors always appear to say HI for dessert too..hmmmmm. ;)

MO: I hope you are feeling better this afternoon!

    LYNND: Sweatpants and no bra..YAY! I just hope you're wearing a sweatshirt too..ijs.. ;)

CAROL: I hope you have a nice day with your aunt!

    HI BEBBI!

Mr Z wants to go shopping today..so off I go! Have a great day everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  22. LOL..I just re-read my comment..I meant to write "I played 'Misty' over and over again.." One 'over' doesn't seem to convey how much I liked that song..or make much sense.. ;)

J/LIN: My brother once asked if he could borrow my Johnny Mathis Greatest Hits album..I was so surprised. I thought maybe he'd finally found his heart. When I got it back, there were circles on it from where he had set his soda down. I guess he just wanted to use it as a coaster..sigh..Oh well, his loss..right? :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. 25! And I'm out the door..Mr Z is pacing! :D

    ReplyDelete
  24. J/L: Whoa! That was a powerful blog... not just because you wrote it so well, but in light of what happened to you later on in life.

You are a remarkable person! :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Zona -- how dare your brother mistreat Johnny that way. :( So sorry that he didn't respect your property. I would have bee highly upset.

Bear -- Thank you. It is probably best that we don't know what the future holds, don't you think?

    ReplyDelete
  26. My 81 year old mother seems to come across a lot of people that she refers to as "dumb ass". LOL. I can't disagree.

    Zona -- Congrats on 25.

Jennifer -- Congrats on #1 today.

  27. Good Afternoon everyone.

    Congrats on first Jennifer.

I have been busy making my Christmas mince-meat for tarts later in the season.

Just-Lin - I loved your blog. You write so well. I love Johnny's music.

I will be thinking of all of you on your Thanksgiving Day. Love to all. Tinka

  28. Young Lin was quite the romantic! Nice post! Took me back to better days when I didn't know how dumb boys are. LOL j/k

    Congratulations #1 Hooter Jennifer!

Tink, Bear, Zona, Carol, Bebbi, Lynn, Maureen and all who fly in later.

Area 51: Barb, thanks! I didn’t know you read Home Fires. Makes me happy to offer a friendly reminder.

  29. SPORTS UPDATE:

JODI beat J/L (Green Bay beat 40ers); MARY beat MO (Detroit beat Cleveland); Raiders beat Bengels in last 23 seconds (their 3rd win of the season) and last....sniff sniff growl growl---San Diego beat Denver badly in our 4th loss in a row.

Glad to update you and congratulations to you winners. MARY, you must be pretty darn excited and SAC BARB AND ZONA...what can I say other than , "good job". MARY: Detroit and Denver both play on Thanksgiving, wonder what that will be like but at least not against each other.

Ok, I have to go and sulk for a few.....stupid Broncos!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Dianne -- gee, thanks for the updates on the games. I probably would have been happier to stay ignorant of the results. I'll sulk with you.

    ReplyDelete
  31. DIANNE...ummm, thanks...I think! I am not surprised. So we're 1 - 9! Maybe we can get a trophy for being the worst team in history!

JUST LIN...living in Cleveland, we are used to this. No sulking!

I don't think anyone would even care anymore if the Brown's left again. We will never be in a Super Bowl and we can never even host one, since the morons didn't build a stadium with a dome or retractible roof.

Right now, only the Cav's offer us any hope of having champions

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh yeah...didn't Ohio State beat Michigan yesterday?

  34. Is anyone (or everyone!) watching the American Music Awards? Some great performances...and a couple not so great!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Happy Sunday Owls

J/L, I love Johnny Mathis too and I also played that record over and over. In fact I had all his records. I was taken back to my early teen years as I read your blog. So descriptive and beautifully written. I also had the same thought as Bear about what happened in your life. You were a beauty as a teen and are now inside and out, as well. Thanks for this SMV.

Have a wonderful time spending the holiday with your family.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Jennifer, Congrats on #1. You have a busy day on Turkey Day. I am going to my son and DIL's house. I have to make my dressing for the boy. He said it isn't Thanksgiving without Mom's dressing.

Mo, I saw Blind Side on Friday and I loved it. Everyone in the movie did a fantastic job, imo. Take Kleenex!

Mo2, The Music awards Awards don't come on here for another 20 minutes. I plan to watch. Is it worth it?

Zona, LOL @ your comment to Lynn.

Lynn, You can still go to your daughter's braless. Just wear a big heavy sweatshirt. No one will know!

Dianne, Thanks for the update and the text. Don't sulk too long.

NN, I do read your Homefires and enjoy it very much. You are a very talented writer.

Waving to all the other Owls. I hope you all had a good Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  37. SACBARB...yes, def worth watching. I had stopped watching award shows, but this was very entertaining. There were a TON of performances and the end...all I can say is OMG!! Not sure if it is a good OMG or a bad OMG!!! Watch and tell me what you think!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Mo: I was watching it for a while. Carrie Underwood was awesome. Lady Gaga..wow, so full of costume and imagery..unbelievable, in a weird way!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I didn't see the end! ack, what did I miss?

    ReplyDelete
  40. BEBBI...You missed something...not sure what!! I'm sure by tomorrow it will be on YouTube. I don't want spoil it for the West Coasters

    ReplyDelete
  41. Maureen- Blind Side is so on our list of movies to see this week.

Lynn- A day in sweat pants and no bra sounds good to me.

J/L does your mom still have your bedroom looking the same from when you were young? My MIL still has her son's bedrooms looking the same.

Zona- I absolutely love strawberry cheesecake, you had me drooling!!

I didn't watch the music award show, but what happened at the end? I have to go google!

    Tink- have fun cooking!

The Bears have also sucked this year. :(

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh, I thought it was live. Does that mean the west coasters get it taped?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hi everyone!
    Congrats on 1st Jennifer!
We are having a quiet turkey day here. I didn't want to invite anyone because my cupboards will be bare! Really, I have to pack everything away to get ready for the carpenters on Monday. Did I mention that we are leaving for Vegas on Sat.? My poor son will be here to witness the mess lol!

Donna, Your quote of the day cracked me up! I fully expect to find all kinds of unused, hidden crap. I am sure Mr Mary will confiscate all alcoholic goodies :)

JL, I had a mad crush on Johnny & Sal Mineo when I was a teenager. I was lucky enough to hear him sing this year at out local Casino. He looks just as good as ever. and his voice just as sweet! Your writing took me back to my teen bedroom where I listened to my 45s for hrs. I did a lot of day dreaming and dying of a broken heart, you know, from all the boy crushes lol! I was very shy then, so I am sure none of the boys even knew I existed! Fats Domino was one of my faves. My fave. song Johnny Mathis sang was "What Will My Mary Say" (of course lol)

Tinka, I haven't had mince meat pie since I was married to Huz #1. His Mother made a great pie!

Diane, I didn't see the game as I was having lunch and spending the day with my Niece Jaimie. Mr Mary called and told me I would have won the football pool if they hadn't made that last winning TD!

    Waving at Whabbear,Bebbi,MO, Carol,

  44. I'm watching a repeat of CSI:New York and Chris Daughtry is acting! And he is good! Two Daughtrys in one night...pretty damn good!

    ReplyDelete
  45. MARY...last year I emptied my pantry to re-organize it and I found a can of tuna in the back of it. I had no idea how old it was, so I wrote to Star Kist with the code from the can. They wrote back and the tuna was 8 years old!! It went straight into the garbage!

    ReplyDelete
  46. what the hell...50!

    SHIRLEY...mark that down!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Mary, That was my QOTD and booze. LOL Thanks Shirley.

Mo, I'm watching and I don't know what to think about some of the acts...Lady GaGa being one. I thought it was a little violent with her breaking all that "glass" even tho I know it was movie glass.

Someone on Facebook already posted who got Entertainer of the year, but I'm gonna still watch it all.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Donna, that's weird! I was thinking YOU & wrote Barb lol!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Jennifer -- it was 42 yrs since I moved out. The room isn't the same.

Mary -- I was lucky enough to see him when I was about 18 in soCal and again decades later in SF. He was awesome both times.

  50. SACBARB...Did you love the Idol's...Carrie, Daughtry and Kelly? One more Idol to come!

  51. Good grief SacBarb I must be on crack tonight lol! I hope you know what I meant!

    ReplyDelete
  52. There! No doubt about it! I got 69!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Geez, Mary. I hope you're finally satsfied! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  54. Mo, Yesssss I loved Carrie, Kelly and Daughtry...not so much Adam. That was just too weird. He has a great voice, but I didn't care for the screaming and I just didn't GET the whole song!

    Mary, LOL go to bed!

    ReplyDelete
  55. SACBARB...I have been waiting to hear what you had to say! that was the strangest thing I think I ever saw! It was not fit for mainstream tv...maybe ok on cable! And that kiss??? And the guy he had subbing his face in his crotchal area????

He could have left the screaming out...wayyyy out!

    MARY...go to bed!

    ReplyDelete
  56. subbing????? Oy,I meant rubbing.

    MAUREEN...go to bed!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Good night and sweet dreams everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes Mo I agree about the subbing er I mean rubbing. I wasn't sure I saw it right, I mean I thought I was seeing things, oh you know what I mean. Yes, I was surprised to see that on network TV too.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Night Mary. I'm really going to bed now too.

    ReplyDelete
  60. MO & BARB: This is the first time I've watched the AMA's in a long time..I thought it was really good. I was pulling for Whitney..I wanted her to do well so badly.

Mr Z and I didn't know what to think of Adam Lambert..he mixed pop and hard rock..and not too successfully..imho..

DIANNE: I'm sorry about your Broncos..thanks for the congrats on the Raiders win..

    BARB: THE RAIDERS WON!! :D

G'night MO, BARB, J/LIN, MARY and everyone else headed to bed..Sweet dreams!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Good night, Hooters! Thanks for listening to Johnny with me today.

    ReplyDelete
  62. J/L: I love your music video today. I did the same as you and Mary with Johnny. I was very shy and dreamed of my "boyfriends' that had no idea I existed either. We did have parties sometimes and we would always play Johnny and then sometimes make it a ladies pick dance. The boys didn't like those so much.

JENNIFER; I can't be too sad about your Bears. You took Cutler and we are mad at him so Denver cheers for him not to win....sorry....we are not very forgiving fans here.

Ok, guess I will go to bed now. My husband was very irritating to me tonight and I think it was mutual. It was just one of those night...grr.

    Night.

    ReplyDelete
  63. To whom it may concern, my love may be wishy washy and I may be fickle. Right now I am head-over-heels for Barb and all of her ego stroking goodness. *SWOON!*

Sorry Jodi, you were so last week...and then you HAD to go BRAGGING about an apple crisp you had no intention of sharing with me. (please note my avatar) Love, Angry Girl

    ReplyDelete
  64. Adam Lambert has such a great voice and so much talent, I don't think hehad to resort to such raunch and dramtatics. I think the whole thing negated his natural talents.

SACBARB...I read they cut out the crotch rubbing/kissing part of the performance on the west coast.

    Good morning No NEWZ!
