Incredible Friends

by DeeDee

For my birthday, my "posse" rented a stretch Hummer and took me to Marks for dinner in Houston. It was great and then we went to a karaoke bar. Three of us have a little skit that we have done for years to the song "Who's Sorry Now".....I'd explain it, but you would really have to be there...lol. We had a fantastic evening and it was a good birthday.

My gift came as a total surprise...especially with this bunch.....because they are not the best at keeping secrets and they had been planning for months to take me to see Rufus Wainwright in concert in Austin. I discovered his music a couple of years ago and am a big fan. Only these friends could have pulled this off. It wasn't until on the drive home that Lisa took these tickets out of her bag and I said, "Whatcha got there honey?" She said, "Oh...tickets for some guy named Luther Wetwipe or something..." I snatched the tickets and said "That's RUFUS WAINWRIGHT!!!! HE IS INCREDIBLE!!! You know Elton John has called Rufus the best songwriter in the world.....OMG...I would love to see him."....and Lisa said, "well here..." and the others screamed Happy Birthday! I almost messed my pants....after all that food...and to be shocked that way....

The concert was Tuesday night. We all went. We sat second row center. It was wonderful. On top of everything else, Lisa had arranged for me to meet him backstage. THAT was also a surprise at the end of the show. WHAT A NIGHT!! I am so lucky to have had this group of friends for the last 30 years.

BTW....Lisa....my friend that made the night so special, is 53 years old and was diagnosed with third stage ovarian cancer in 2002. Doctors seem to feel that this may be her last year on earth....and she is so dedicated to making everything we do special........I love you, Lisa.....and thank you.......

  8. Morning Glories!

    Jodi congrats on first!

Deedee what fantasic friends you have! I had never heard of Rufus but I am glad you introduced him. I could just sit and listen to him play the piano. An obvious talent! Loved this song.

Hoping the damn doctors don't know what they are talking about when it comes to your friend Lisa. She sounds like a pistol!

    Shirley Happy Birthday!

  9. Good Morning Hooters!
    JODIHO- congrats on 1st!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHIRLEY!!! I would sing to you but Jodi will vouch that it is not really a good thing...

DeeDee- you do have a special friends indeed. You are right, you are lucky to have then for all these years. Blessings and best wishes to Lisa.

Hope everyone has a great day and weekend. Bittersweet for me, my Mom is coming for the weekend which is the good part- but the bad is that today is the anniversary of the day my dad passed away.

BUT- I only smile when I think of him, he suffered too long and I hope that whatever, wherever (yesterdays question?) his soul rests -he is painfree and at peace.

Going to see the movie "Blindside" today- I just know I will need tissues...

DeeDee What a great birthday celebration you had! I wish I could have seen you and your friends singing "Who's Sorry Now". I'm glad you had such a good time. I loved the words to this song. I used to be very addicted to cigarettes and chocolate milk, btw. I'm so sorry about your friend Lisa. I hope she proves them wrong. (((HUGS)))

  17. Happy Birthday SHIRLEY. I hope you have an nice day and you are still an youngster in my book. You were only two when I graduated from high school.

JODI: Glad you enjoyed the movie. Were there a lot of screaming girls there? I over-head a lady say she would go to the first show again because there was too much screaming and she couldn't hear the movie.
BTW, My phone drops all calls when TINA sings too. She doesn't hold a candle to your beautiful voice.

LYNN: I am sorry you are having a rough time. I think it might be time for you to go on another one of those all inclusive couple of days for one and get some good rest.

DEEDEE: What a great Birthday you had with your friends. I guess that is what is nice about being older (like some of us) as we can have some wonderful friends for so many years. I am blessed with friends like that too and how fun they surprised you. I wish you would have had it taped at the karaoke place..,what a fun blog that would be to watch. I send how prayers and hopes for your friend that she is beating the odds and does well.

SCIRISH: FROM AREA 51: I was so mad at God for a long time after my young 57 year old husband was taken in a matter of days from me. I just couldn't understand it and I still don't. I talked to a priest about it as I was feeling mad but then guilty to be mad at God. They reassured me that I was "normal" and that God had very big shoulders. I have gotten away from those feelings many years ago but it took a long time and much grief counseling.

Ok....out the door to meet my brother. HE IS BUYING ME LUNCH. He lost a bet to me.

    See ya' all later

    ReplyDelete
  18. Tina Sure! Mary already took a big bite out of one breast but LynnD can help herself to the other. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  19. I need to get away from the computer and get something accomplished. I should probably start with a shower. LOL bbl

    ReplyDelete
  20. DEEDEE: You have a wonderful group of friends..and it sounds like you had a really unforgettable night! I'd never heard of Rufus Wainwright until you told me about the album "Rufus Does Judy at Carnagie Hall" I just loved it. Your friend Lisa sounds like a fighter..I bet she will prove them all wrong. I'll be praying for her.

Loved your blog today DEEDEE..thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  21. SHIRLEY: Happy Happy Birthday to you! :)

JODI: Congrats on FIRST! We now know that the movie was awesome..but how was the popcorn? ;)

    GOLDIE: Big {{Hugs}} to you..

DIANNE: Enjoy your lunch..it's about time! ;)

    LYNN: I hope the fog lifts soon and you feel better. {{hugs}}

CAROL: But did you enjoy your ice cream? :D

TINA: Oh, I don't know that your singing is that bad..Nikki loved it! ;)

J/LIN: Maybe LYNN would rather have a thigh..her avatar's legs look mighty skinny.. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  22. DIANNE - Thank you....*she says blushing*!!! And yes, watching with all those young girls does take patience, but it was totally worth it!!!

    TINA - I didn't say that I didn't like you singing.....just my phone!!! Luv u 4!!!

ZONA - The popcorn was everything I could've hoped for.....hot, BUTTERY, totally yummo!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. ZONA: So Nikki loves TINA'S singing. I think they may have met at singing school. I just don't think that TINA graduated from it like Nikki did. Nothing personal TINA...but as the saying goes, "it is what it is".

GOLDIE; I know an anniversary of a loved one is always hard each year. I am excited for you that your mom is coming to visit. It always seems like that is a fun time for all of you (including JODI).

I am already home from lunch with my brother. It sure is different going with a guy instead of a girlfriend. Bruce and I just talked and ate and then it was time to go...what happened to the other fours hours I am used to spending when I go to lunch? He is leaving for Texas tomorrow for the Thanksgiving week so he had things to do but I doubt that would have changed it. Men...they are so different!

MO; You were trying to decide what kind of wine went with PB last night....I think this is the time for box wine in your all time favorite flavor j/s

J/L; When do you leave for your holiday? Hope you have a lot of fun.

TINA AND ZONA...REGARDING SNOW: TINA, I would like you to pass Denver by this time with your storm and send it on to MARY and that direction as MrD needs to get out of town on Tuesday to his moms.

ZONA; We all know by now why you want snow. Just think if you lived in a snow area...you would never get out of bed, swimming pool, off couch, off kitchen table, out of back seat of car, etc. You get my drift everyone, right?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Where is everyone? Two hours since the last post (mine) and no one around.

I am off to meet some old co-workers for a little happy hour. MrD will be so surprised when he comes home and sees all the work I have done...I have surprised myself and think I might even do more when he is gone next week. I will probably throw a movie or two in with grandkids too.

The mess from last night is still all over the place but like I said last night, "I'm not cleaning it up since I didn't get to play with all of you." I don't think the maid service was here either today

    ReplyDelete
  25. Evening all.....

I have literally spent the day working on my farms and island.....crazy I know....lol

Thanks for the encouragement for Lisa.....in 2002 when she was diagnosed the doctors said 3 years.....so next April she will have been defying the odds for 5 years...she looks better than she did when she was 25 and she has always been one of those women that cause people to put down their silverware and stare when she walks in a restaurant....she is very beautiful....inside and out......she had 6 months of chemo at first but she said "no more"....and has had several surgery's... when the cancer shows up somewhere......but she is the same as she has always been.....always laughing...wonderful Lisa....

She has accepted her year from the doctors and reminded me that we always said we wanted to die before we got old and funky(her words)..lol....and I tell her.."but I didn't know my old age was going to be so much fun!!"

I haven't accepted the "year" and I won't.....she is going to be the first to survive late stage ovarian cancer as far as I am concerned..

And the birthday she pulled off was not typical of things she does all the time....but it is typical of the many many joys and laughter we have shared.....

So thanks again and those of you who pray...keep her in your prayers.....and those of you like me who certainly wish her health and many years to come....keep it up.....there is power in numbers!!

Good health and love to all.....D

    ReplyDelete
  61. i think this birthday was much better than last year....last year they gave DeeDee bullets and a GC to a shooting range~ lol~

    ReplyDelete
  62. Tina and Carol I don't think directions or a GPS will help ME find a place I don't believe exists.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Tina..

I think that is better than a GC to a paintball party.. Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Is that why DeeDee is always talking about her gun?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Carol that's what we should have here at the Manor sometime, a paintball party!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Bebbi <------ did not give in and did not eat that damn thing.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Your welcome Shirley..sounds like the sweating might be because you are closer to menopause..have fun with that. I know I have.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I had a top ten of my life embarrassing moment the other day..Monday, actually..anyone want to hear it?

    ReplyDelete
  74. shut up Shirley~ my farts don't scare anyone~ :D

    yay bebbi~

    ReplyDelete
  75. Um, Shirley that was me. I farted..and it stinks! I had "Taste of Sams" tonight..and ate and ate and ate..haha..free samples rock my world!

    ReplyDelete
  76. But heavy creams and cheesecake are not too good on my poor belly.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Okay..so, first thing Monday I was leaving for work and had on this lighter weight skirt because it was going to be in the 60's. Right before I left for work I thought maybe I should put a slip under it because it was a little see through. I went upstairs and grabbed a slip real quick and put it on and ran out the door.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I got to work and it was about an hour into work and we got a call from downstairs that someone was here for my boss. He went to another department into a conference room so I ran over to tell him that someone was here.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I walked up to the door and I felt something..to my horror when I looked down my SKIRT WAS AROUND MY ANKLES!!... My boss was the only one in the conference room because someone else was going down to get the visitor! He looked at me and I tried to kick it off and got tangled in it. His face turned red and he tried to hide behind his notebook while I got myself under control. I almost fell trying to get it off and I was so EMBARRASSED!!!...

He says, "Well, I guess that is what happens when you lose a lot of weight". I just couldn't say anything..! omg,!

    ReplyDelete
  80. omg...i can't stop laughing....but i have to go....got to drop off the boys at the movies~ bbiab~

    ReplyDelete
  81. oh good....i thought you meant ur slip~

    ReplyDelete
  82. thank God it wasn't my skirt but I felt like it was..oh, I am SO THANKFUL no other people saw it. But, anyway, everyone in my office knows about it and we have all been laughing about it all week. Thank goodness the embarrassment turned into laughter. :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. I guess it's time to buy a smaller slip! Lol!!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Do you have security cameras? If so I would check out youtube. ijs!!

    ReplyDelete
  85. yes, I would say it is..lol. I had to pin it and it was 6" too big! I was so surprised. I had no idea it would do that..oh! All week, I have been telling my bosses that I will try not to "slip"..whenever I go to run make copies or something. IT was crazy. Why do things like that happen to me? I feel like "I love Lucy" in the office some days.

    ReplyDelete
  86. OMG, I never thought of that Shirley..lol! I hope not!!

    ReplyDelete
  87. I am such a Klutz. Thanks for listening to one of my top ten embarrassing moments. Maybe even top 5!

    ReplyDelete
  88. I am OFF work for 9 days and I am so happy!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Shirley, what did you do today? Anything fun?

    ReplyDelete
  90. I have a surprise!!!!!

Shirley!!! In honor of your birthday I have baked you a cake....shut up Tina.......

When it stops smoking everyone get a fragment.....a piece I mean....

    ReplyDelete
  91. What kind of cake, DeeDee? A volcano cake?

    ReplyDelete
  92. OMG..

    Bebbi.. LMAO.. Oh my God!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  93. DeeDee, even if it's smoking or not, it's the thought that count! Thank you! Will we be able to tell the flavor of the cake from the fragments...I mean pieces?

    ReplyDelete
  94. EXCELLENT BEBBI!! Thats right! Its a volcanic cake.....I tried some and I erupted....I'm just not much good in the kitchen area....

    ReplyDelete
  95. Bebbi..

That was priceless. thanks for sharing..

    Dee..

I kinda like burnt cake.. well not really.. but like Shirley said it was the thought that counted..

    ReplyDelete
  96. Bebbi I watched the new Star Trek movie that my sister bought me and went for coffee with a friend. It was a nice day.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Of course my daughter thought it was hilarious! She said, "Mom, that is like your underwear falling off"...*shaking head* what a week! My boss was really sweet about it though, he even told me a story about an embarrassing moment that he had once. I ended up telling the others because I asked him if he please wouldn't tell one of my bosses because he always ribs me..and he said, "well, I might tell him but he won't say anything"..so I just told him myself..you know, better out of the horses mouth..they say. It was still a crazy week. I think I blushed half way through it.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Shirley..

LOL "was his wee wee hanging out"

    LOL LOL LOL

    ReplyDelete
  99. Shirley, that is nice. I am glad to hear you have a nice birthday. :)

    ReplyDelete
  100. Here's a piece of cake Carol. Careful cause it keeps flaring up.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Shirley..

You got to see the new Star Trek movie.. wasn't it fab? Its on DVD already?

    ReplyDelete
  102. Another embarrassing moment at work was brought up when this happened...I was making arrangements for one of my bosses to go to China. We were on a conference call and I said, "The republic of Vagina"..well, I actually said the Republic of China but I stuttered just at the right moment that it sounded like VAGINA! You would not believe the laughter from the men on the other end of the conference call. So, of course, one of my bosses said it wasn't as funny as the Republic of Vagina.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Shirley..

I got so excited that you got to see the movie.. I forgot to say.. I am glad you had a nice day.. ♥♥

    ReplyDelete
  104. Tina knew and I knew but you didn't! Neener neener neener!!!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Shirley, my oldest son loves Star Trek..! He is always trying to get me interested.

He is actually in Chicago this weekend with his girlfriend. :) I got to meet her for the first time on Thursday at lunch and she's really nice.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Shirley..

I am totally passing on the flared up cake.. thanks tho..

    Bebbi..

I don't blame your daughter for thinking it was hilarious.. cause as embarrassing as it might be, the laughter makes it all ok..

    :O)

    ReplyDelete
  107. Thanks Carol. Yes the movie just came out on DVD this week. There was one part I didn't quite understand why it was put in, but I did enjoy it.

    ReplyDelete
  108. bbiab=be back in a bit~

DeeDee~! omg....leave you for 15 minutes....honey....you don't even know where the kitchen is....the first time you had to ask directions!!!~

    ReplyDelete
  109. You didn't know that bbiab meant Be Back In A Bit? Wow, that amazes me. How about this one:

    IANADBIPOOTV

That one has been around a long time, do you know what it means?

    ReplyDelete
  110. I know other things that erupt that are much better ..hehe..omg, gutter time.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Bebbi...

    I have no idea..

    ANADBIPOOTV??????

    ReplyDelete
  112. Bebbi..

My belly erupts when I have to poop

    :O)

    ReplyDelete
  113. Carol: True, the laughter does make it okay. I am glad for that. :)

    ReplyDelete
  114. Bebbi ask you son (I assume he has seem this movie) what he thought of Spock's love interest and if he thought it was a neccesary part of the movie. I would be interested in hearing what he thought. I didn't like it

    ReplyDelete
  115. IANADBIPOOTV = I am not a doctor but I play one on tv. It's been around forever..that acronym.

Ew, I was not talking about your exploding behind. ...lol, although, I understand and have experienced that as well.

I was talking about pornish things.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Shirley..

I think they put that in there to show that Spock does have feelings even tho he is not suppose to..

Don't you think they did a good job with casting..

    ReplyDelete
  117. I Am Not A Doctor But I Play One On TV

    ReplyDelete
  118. Geez.. this comments are speeding thru.. I can't keep up..

    ReplyDelete
  119. shirley~ i was going to rent that movie tonight....but i've been running the kids around all night and won't have time to sit down and watch it~

    ReplyDelete
  121. I am def going to buy the movie..I love star trek, and this last movie had to be my fav...

    ReplyDelete

  123. Carol they did do a good job with casting. I don't like the actor who played spock, but he did a great job in this role.

Tina you should rent the movie sometime. If I was closer I'd come over and we could have a PJ party and watch Star Trek!! Wouldn't that be fun?
